Back up on the backup from the 21st.  Will be a bit bumpy for a few days I'm sure.

Well the assholes at VolumeDrive can't find my server, so that's that.  I'm already recovering the database from the 21st (then have to apply the incrementals that I had after that).  The DB recovery is going to take a long time to insert the rows; but I am pretty sure that the root partition has enough space to do it now.

*sigh* Sorry folks, wished we could have got the data back right up to near the outage.

ETA for recovery will be sometime this coming week, Monday/Tuesday ideally with my schedule.

Just a thought, now that the madness has died down a bit, have you double-checked with Burstnet to see if they did retain the server after all?  A long shot, but maybe worth it if it would save you some effort on the restoration.  I cannot imagine VD will stay in business much longer, if they even still are and not just trying to milk the last drops of cash from their customers.  What rubbish.

Thanks for all your efforts, FP.  Hope you are still enjoying the long weekend -- please don't ruin yours for our sake.  An extra few days won't kill anybody.

Yup I PMed the guys at Burst again asking if there's anything they could do/find, and that I would pay a months worth of fees to get at the data. Nothing back yet, so for now I'm going with the worst case (who knows, VD might be pissed off with how vocal I've been since Page 1 of the WHT thread and just telling me to beat it) scenario and recovering with what I have.  It takes a LONG time to insert all these posts back into the DB (I'm guessing it will be around 10+ hours, but the process is running in the background w/ Screen so I'm not concerned).

FYI I broke the RAID mirror on the new server to adjust some partition sizes so the notice is offline.. I'm about to go have some fun tonight with my wife, so tomorrow our regularly scheduled program of no information should resume.

5  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: OO off line for a short time on: August 29, 2013, 09:52:09 PM
Ok my bender err business meetings in Boston are complete (and I gotta say, if I lived near Fenway Park I might actually become a baseball fan.. That place was awesome!!) and the new server is online.  I'm doing some test recoveries and feeling out the new digs so that I am prepared for if/when the server comes up at VD.

I really want that data, but if we need to rollback to July 24th we can.. So worst case is the 24th, but I want to give VD a few more days to get their shit together.  I'm opening up tickets daily, haven't had anything back from them yet -- but the overall /21 is showing slow signs of progress and our /24 is also now alive (just not our server in that /24).

If there's anyone that has had experience with Virtualmin I'd welcome the input.. Should I be recovering our environment into a Virtualmin world for ease of portability and management?  I'm thinking with it I could farm out some of the administrative tasks without handing over the keys to the kingdom (root).

Full disclosure this weekend is pretty slammed for me.  Tomorrow night I'm at a concert with my wife (something about being married for 10 years or something.. I dunno), Saturday is a friends 40th w/ keg of beer, Sunday is our annual neighborhood deck crawl starting at 4pm.  Monday will be recovery day w/ some admin work.  Unless the old OO server comes online this weekend, I probably won't much around much until Monday is what I'm getting at aside from letting these jobs run in the background and checking results after the fact.

I'm off to Boston (baaastan) for a couple of days, back Thursday afternoon. I'll check in when I can, but its a full schedule (including a ball game at Fenway tomorrow night in what looks to be thunderstorms.. Yay?).

Thanks for the offer on the help guys, that's really appreciated.  I had already pulled the trigger on an OVH server, however should that prove a huge pain in the ass (it's month to month, not a year commitment or anything), I may take you up on that.

The server order page says up to 72 hours for deployment, we shall see (Some folks on WHT had theirs in hours).  Hopefully by the time we do get the new platform, the old one is available again for a quick backup.

8  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: OO off line for a short time on: August 26, 2013, 05:31:15 PM
Ok looks like speeds are good from a number of locations.. I will place the order once I'm out of my afternoon meetings.  I ate a Roti the size of my head for lunch, so if you don't hear from me by 6pm eastern please send someone over with a cup of coffee and some Charmin.

Sorry I should have added that if you could post the theoretical limit of your connection to, just want to make sure the throughput is reasonable for your connection.. Talked with Rip about this company, and he knew of them without having to look them up -- reasonably priced, been around a long time and seems reliable.  I will probably put the order in later today after some people have the opportunity to post any crappy speeds.
10  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: OO off line for a short time on: August 26, 2013, 03:51:15 PM
If the folks that actively use OO (and know about us harboring here for the nearterm) could please go to:

http://ipv4.bhs.proof.ovh.net/

I'd like you to post your speedtest results on your home connection (while it is idle please, if you are uploading/downloading, using VOIP phones etc it may not be representative).  These guys have been in the business for awhile and have some attractive pricing for servers -- I just want to ensure the Quebec DC peering is fast enough for everyone.
11  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: OO off line for a short time on: August 26, 2013, 12:28:44 PM
Ya not looking good. Will give it another day or two, then move ahead with recovering to the end of July somewhere else.
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: OO off line for a short time on: August 26, 2013, 12:34:04 AM
Thanks gang, I would rather avoid having to deal with that monthly if we can avoid it.  Let's see where we end up, servers are coming up now on other subnets (and I'm constantly nmapping ours, and there's some minor progress over the hours).  I think it's going to be a day or two though before we see it online; but I am cautiously optimistic we will see it again.

Looks like we may be in luck today or tomorrow, vd is announcing their bgp routes to a new facility and their twitter has had some minor updates.

The second I see oo back online I will throw it in maintenance mode to grab the database... Ater that I'm not sure where we go from there but I will care a lot less once I've got a recent backup.

It's not up to me of course but it seems to me it would be foolish to stick with VolumeDrive after this fiasco...

Agreed but the problem is pricepoint to dedicated server ratio.  VD was one of the cheapest options out there (now I see why); while I love OO I'm not going to dig into my own pocket for a few hundred a month for top tier server hosting.  I'll start poking around looking at alternatives as it looks like the environment at VD is indeed (slowly) coming online.  I don't anticipate seeing our environment available for a few more days (likely while I'm in Boston on business I am sure) based on the current pace, but I am hopeful I can at least get a fresh DB backup and /var/html backup (usually that wouldn't matter, but I've been making changes and updates in the last month that I'd rather not have to do again).

Just got back from work (golf course with some business associates that I had to be at) and dinner, pissed there isn't any progress on vd recovery. Rip and I watching for any sign of life on the site, the minute (if) it's online I'm grabbing the database and HTML directory (rip please do the same, vsftpd needs to be manually started). The minute I've got a known "good" backup, I'm reversing the last months charges via my credit card and going elsewhere. It's a fucking gongshow at burst and vd.

I've got a busy weekend, but should be around tomorrow evening. Rip has my cellphone too, so if it comes up we can be in contact. I'm still really pissed off that spider oak shit the bed 30 days ago after running for 2 years error free. Murphy is a dick.

Lots of drama between hoster and wholesaler. Waiting to see if our server is sitting in bursts facility or if volumedrive ran off with it.

This isn't going to be a fast recovery.

Burstnet admin says they aren't bankrupt and pointing them to the thread on wht. Not impressed with the lack of comms, but hey at least that's something. I'm going to rack out soon (I'm old kids), hopefully back up any minute now.

Its a gongshow, don't know what is going on yet. Clowns at Burstnet "Retract their previous statement, and they are not sure what's doing on. Should get interesting in the next 24 hours" to paraphrase them.

I'm going to think positive while I sleep.

More odd, all of my hosting providers site is unavailable. Either it's a huge oops on their part, or some bad news incoming on their viability.

I would check the webhostingtalk.com forums if there is any doubt. they seem to always know when a provider goes tits up.

Yeah they aren't much help other than everyone saying "wtf". Burstnet admin getting snippy but hasn't said if volumedrive is kaput or not.

Probably a bad time to realize spider oak hasn't worked right since July 24th either for backup (yet it emails me daily to say its successful!). Hoping for the best here.

Server was to be migrated to a new burst net facility a week ago.. Checking some industry forums, burstnet has had major issues with that migration. I'm guessing that now those issues are fixed, we are just now being migrated.

Giving it a few hours before I start getting more concerned.

Outage yesterday (scheduled) fixed the random crashing issues.  Ended up being a few things; including a corrupted innodb table.  Fixed that, ran 24 hours without error and all good.

I'm now converting the database to a different format (still innodb but barracuda format), and the import is taking awhile.  Just stumbled on a weird release note that shows an option required that isn't in the conversion guides, so whenever this is done -- if it needs it, not sure if I'm going to start over with the right option or just bring it back online.  Depends on tired level.

DBAs deserve gold medals... and parades.. such boring work.

We need to hire, hopefully short term, a database migration expert.  We have to move a large amount of data (all of the old data like reviews, etc. from the old site) from our old platform to the new.  You need to be a PHP / SQL pro.   This is a paying gig, but it's entirely out of my pocket so it has to be reasonable.  I want this done immediately so be ready to hit the ground running.

Thanks.

Depending on the complexity I may be able to lend a hand gratis -- but don't know enough about what you are doing.. If just migrating data, it can't be all that hard (unless you are jumping from MySQL to Oracle, backend DB changes can be a bit more tricky but not impossible).

If you're looking for someone to migrate the data and make code level changes in existing PHP pages to query/retrieve, then ya I'm outski slywink

I've been stuck on this one particular assassination mission (not a story mission). It's the one in Florence where you have to kill about 8-10 guards on a bridge before a 1 minute countdown timer runs out. I just can't seem to take them all out! Any tips for that particular mission?

I was planning to do most of the side missions before really digging into the story missions but it's becoming pretty repetitive and I worry about losing interest in the game, I think I should just get back to the story and worry about the side stuff later if I'm still interested in the game.

BTW I had asked earlier in this (getting massive) thread.. The best advice I was offered was to use your poison blade, the counter won't start until someone dies.  So send in your thugs to beat em up, walk around posioning and then use the hidden blade and do a "low profile" assassination on each person (The cut scene seems to be shorter and lets you kill in quicker fashion).
34  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: OO off line for a short time on: December 02, 2009, 01:09:22 PM
Yep it's down again, the VM keeps crashing randomly (and I have no way to remote set it, so need to wait for Rip to take notice when he gets in).

Anyhow this Sunday if all goes to plan I will be moving the system to a non-VMed external host, on a dedicated server.  This should virtually eliminate unplanned downtime.  So bear with us until Sunday evening, and we should be going again.

36  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: OO off line for a short time on: November 26, 2009, 09:01:14 PM
Rip has been randomly shutting it down trying to get the new server to work.. I apologize for the lack of warning; but I think it's along the lines of as he has time to troubleshoot the new config -- he does.  While I'd like to see more communication to the users prior to downtime, I'd more like to see us on the damn dedicated server ASAP.

Unfortunately (or fortunately? I don't want it to sound dergetory to Rip); he's the only guy that can work on this portion of the setup -- I don't know his network segments nor have access to the different VM Switches etc. So uhhh.. I'm going to go play Assassin's Creed 2 and pretend I'm an American on Thanksgiving!  ninja

So I "purchased" the u-play tomb, but I've got a few questions (and yes, this one so far was by far the worst for camera angle controls once you hit the timer)..  Also you guys know that if you fall, you can usually reset the switch without waiting for it to complete right? I've only had a few where I couldn't press B again to restart it.

Spoiler for Hiden:
So I go through serious asspain to get to the tomb.. and there was 1500f in chests.. That's it? Seriously? Did I miss something good, or is that really it? The story was interesting, but I expected something better than that

I also realized last night in the villa you have a weapons and armor room... where you can change to other items... that explains why I had pieces of leather, metal and so on equipped -- oh and I was still using a dagger instead of all the fancier knives I had bought  icon_mad Here I thought it was just automatically equipping the "best" items -- not so.

Ok explain.. To get all of the assassin tombs I need to do something with ubi play? I'm hit and miss on the tombs, some I enjoy -- the ones where you have to do it in a certain amount of time before doors close etc is starting to piss me off.  It'd be fine if I was still 12 years old with catlike reflexes, however I am far from that point!

Ok I need help with one of the assassination side missions...

Spoiler for Hiden:
I'm on the Kill 10 brutes in 60 seconds mission, and I am getting pretty pissed off with it.  I've hired the gang of mercenaries and send them in.. I'm then jumping in behind each of the brutes and killing them with the hidden blade; but the damn cutscenes while killing them chew up a lot of time.

The closest I've come yet is 9 dead in the minute, but the fact that you have to start over with the run every time just to get there is driving me a little batshit crazy.. Why can't it save right before the fight?

Anyways I've read online about people using smokebombs (Don't have those yet..).. So what am I missing? Is there a faster way to one-hit kill them when behind them other than using your hidden blade?

I've been loving this game so far, but this is really starting to irk me.
