Outage yesterday (scheduled) fixed the random crashing issues. Ended up being a few things; including a corrupted innodb table. Fixed that, ran 24 hours without error and all good.
I'm now converting the database to a different format (still innodb but barracuda format), and the import is taking awhile. Just stumbled on a weird release note that shows an option required that isn't in the conversion guides, so whenever this is done -- if it needs it, not sure if I'm going to start over with the right option or just bring it back online. Depends on tired level.
DBAs deserve gold medals... and parades.. such boring work.

We need to hire, hopefully short term, a database migration expert. We have to move a large amount of data (all of the old data like reviews, etc. from the old site) from our old platform to the new. You need to be a PHP / SQL pro. This is a paying gig, but it's entirely out of my pocket so it has to be reasonable. I want this done immediately so be ready to hit the ground running.
Thanks.
Depending on the complexity I may be able to lend a hand gratis -- but don't know enough about what you are doing.. If just migrating data, it can't be all that hard (unless you are jumping from MySQL to Oracle, backend DB changes can be a bit more tricky but not impossible). If you're looking for someone to migrate the data and make code level changes in existing PHP pages to query/retrieve, then ya I'm outski

The whosi-wazee was borked. Still trying to figure out why the server was fine and eth0 wasn't coming online.. Hosting provider swears that a reboot was all they did. Grr.

Sorry guys I am on the road, and just found this had crashed.. Got a corrupt page in the database; process won't start. Rebooting server, if that doesn't work to clear out a corrupted cache then I need to look at database repair. F'ing murphy and his laws.

I've been stuck on this one particular assassination mission (not a story mission). It's the one in Florence where you have to kill about 8-10 guards on a bridge before a 1 minute countdown timer runs out. I just can't seem to take them all out! Any tips for that particular mission?
I was planning to do most of the side missions before really digging into the story missions but it's becoming pretty repetitive and I worry about losing interest in the game, I think I should just get back to the story and worry about the side stuff later if I'm still interested in the game.
BTW I had asked earlier in this (getting massive) thread.. The best advice I was offered was to use your poison blade, the counter won't start until someone dies. So send in your thugs to beat em up, walk around posioning and then use the hidden blade and do a "low profile" assassination on each person (The cut scene seems to be shorter and lets you kill in quicker fashion).

Yep it's down again, the VM keeps crashing randomly (and I have no way to remote set it, so need to wait for Rip to take notice when he gets in).
Anyhow this Sunday if all goes to plan I will be moving the system to a non-VMed external host, on a dedicated server. This should virtually eliminate unplanned downtime. So bear with us until Sunday evening, and we should be going again.

according to Steam Rip is currently playing Left 4 Dead 2 Well that's good to know! Anyways it's still down, I have no idea what's going on (I can't SSH in) and Rip's email hasn't work in a month or so. I'll see if I can get a hold of Arcanis.

Rip has been randomly shutting it down trying to get the new server to work.. I apologize for the lack of warning; but I think it's along the lines of as he has time to troubleshoot the new config -- he does. While I'd like to see more communication to the users prior to downtime, I'd more like to see us on the damn dedicated server ASAP. Unfortunately (or fortunately? I don't want it to sound dergetory to Rip); he's the only guy that can work on this portion of the setup -- I don't know his network segments nor have access to the different VM Switches etc. So uhhh.. I'm going to go play Assassin's Creed 2 and pretend I'm an American on Thanksgiving!

So I "purchased" the u-play tomb, but I've got a few questions (and yes, this one so far was by far the worst for camera angle controls once you hit the timer).. Also you guys know that if you fall, you can usually reset the switch without waiting for it to complete right? I've only had a few where I couldn't press B again to restart it. I also realized last night in the villa you have a weapons and armor room... where you can change to other items... that explains why I had pieces of leather, metal and so on equipped -- oh and I was still using a dagger instead of all the fancier knives I had bought Here I thought it was just automatically equipping the "best" items -- not so.

cleared tuscany, receiving some pretty good steady income, & am still having a great time (tho that tomb you unlock via ubi play (or whatever it is) was a bit of a pita )... Ok explain.. To get all of the assassin tombs I need to do something with ubi play? I'm hit and miss on the tombs, some I enjoy -- the ones where you have to do it in a certain amount of time before doors close etc is starting to piss me off. It'd be fine if I was still 12 years old with catlike reflexes, however I am far from that point!

Sorry kids just couldn't figure out the destination unreachable error messages.

Nope resolution is fine.. Was the introduction of the iscsi network that has since borked my external access and I'm not sure why.. default gateway is where it should be to the external world..

Well I've asked the guys to disconnect the NICs from the old VM in the setup, then fire it off and shoot me the ifcfg-eth* scripts. I must have missed something in the configuration when I've been mucking around.
I'm able to SSH into OO from the host OS; it's just the return path that seems mucky from the Internet. *sigh*

Ok here's something weird.. Any VMWare / Linux geeks feel free to chime in: 1. Figured out the iscsi network, it's online and the OO area is mapped in. 2. Another network had to be added where the internal name server is, no problem, done, get DNS resolution. 3. Third nic is the external IP/intartubez. So before I figured out #1, I had the other two nics online.. I could even "ping www.google.com" and it would give me the nice reply. I added the third nic in, hit the jackpot for iscsi connection and now? I can resolve names but I can't ping anywhere (destination unreachable). I am stumped.. SELinux is off, iptables is off.. Nothing is filtering at the moment, yet I can't seem to get out to the Internet at all. The only thing I do know is that Arcanis was helping me out and was bringing the old VM online when I had this one up; wondering if there isn't a cluttered arp cache somewhere on the network now. Anyone know how to force an arp update without having access to the routers/switches? I figured by now it would have expired (30 mins), especially after a cycle of the system which should have resulted in a re-announcement of the IP/MAC location. Or... Hrmm.. perhaps the old VM and this one have the same MAC address for the same IP; that could really fuck up CAM tables.. but again I'd expect that to have released by now. Bueller?

Yeah I am using vSphere here at work; but I've been doing this blind, remotely with Arcanis' hands occasionally to assist.. Safe to say I'm a little frustrated at the moment. Basically what's happened is the new server/host has a different connection to the SAN, different subnet on said SAN network and the credentials for the OO VM don't work/it can't find the target.. even after setting that NIC to get an address automatically from DHCP (which it did).. Still can't find the iscsi target -- which means it still can't find the OO directory. Anyways I've been screwing around blind/without local help for about 4 hours -- I've told Arcanis when he gets a chance to boot up the old VM image and I will look at this another day.

Using VMWare Server 2.0 right now, wish we had ESXi as the bare metal hypervisor but I don't really want to go through a reinstall at the moment..
Anyways so far I've got the external network up, just trying to guess my way through RIP's iscsi network.. It won't login (different subnet) so waiting on that information at the moment. Once I have that we should be ok.

We are in the process of migrating the VM over. Wish me some luck here doing this remotely, but we've got the VM ported just a matter of making sure we don't run into conflicts between systems and get the iSCSI configured correctly.

Ok some background updates running and it goes faster if I don't have the DB and Webserver online; even then it's not going fast. I'll post more details when I can figure out what the hell the bottle neck is (All health indicators on the server actually show it isn't taxed at all.. so something weird is definitely up).
Arcanis, please email me when you get a chance; want to ask a few questions about the ESX setup.

Server is 'up' but I still have yet to get a web page to open with it. Seems it is having processing issues, page isn't timing out and every other ping is almost a second and I'm only about 30 feet from the box. If any of the admins want to try and get it and see what they can do feel free it should be available via your normal connection methods. I have more fires popping up here at work so i can't devote my day to working on just OO right now.
I'll log in and see what's up yo.

Hm, FishPants not being able to get hold of Rip is more worrying to me than OO being down, and him not posting here is also. Just hope all is well, and if it is, I'm sure OO will be back up soon.
I'm not going to disagree with this. Unfortunately the few avenues of contact I have for him aren't going through, hope all is well (but I would assume that he's had some form of catastrophic failure well beyond OO..).. any hurricanes or major storms slapping Louisiana these days?

Only reason I would be against it is that some people wouldn't want to move and we would lose some of my fav. posters. It doesn't make sense to me but I know that will happen. I just can't understand why a message board would totally crap out so much.
Beat a dead horse much? It's been a long time since there's been issues; and unfortunately I haven't been able to get a hold of Rip to figure out what's going on but I'm sure he's on it. For what it's worth I have a relatively recent (late October) offsite backup of the site; and we haven't had any issues since the server had been migrated to the new platform. Instead of bitching about OO, it may be worth considering that if the problem is widespread it's actually affecting Rip's livelihood. Anyhow I've got to get to more meetings afterwards if it isn't up I will drop him a line and find out what's going on.

It's Monday morning.. and I'm getting a nasty Mysql error. Lovely! So who wants to bet how many weeks the site will be down?
I'm gonna start with a bet of 3.. 3 weeks.
I was working on the search index on Monday that required me to bump the MySQL server a few times. Anyhow sorry to disappoint, but it was back up and running in no time (with a new search engine no less!)

OO's Friday maintenance is done well ahead of schedule.. Search indexes are rebuilding under the new format, but the conversions are completed and so on. Performance will be slower due to the reindexing, but its working and everything else is completed.

It's still cranking away on the indexes.. Unfortunately Myiasmchk doesn't give you a whole lot of details other than increasing index counters as it goes.
What are you doing to your as??? Something about a munchkin, or munching? He can't help it. Canadian tradition and all! Shouldn't you be preparing for a hurricane or something?

It does. At least it does here, I've disabled PHPBB3 with that kind of a message. The only time it wouldn't respond is if I had the httpd process offline (which I have once or twice for short periods).
EDIT: Nope it doesn't.. Thanks for the suggestion Wonderpug.. I threw up a message to that effect now.

You just doing a compress? or are you reindexing too?
Scanning the tables (and repairing); I found a cache table for another database on the same daemon that was a little funky, so I am going through each table within PHPBB3 to make sure we don't end up in a sad state of affairs.
