I played all of the geneforge demos and just recently bought them all biggrin

I really liked the demos and have been playing geneforge 1 for a while now. The games are pretty retro, but i enjoy the focus on depth and content that comes from not having ultra realistic graphics. I also really enjoy being a shaper heh.

I would download the geneforge 3 demo as it is very long and in my opinion, very good. If you just want to get one of them, i would get geneforge 3 as it has some nice improvements over #1 (MANY more creations, better ui, npc companions). I got all of them because i really liked all of the demos and because that since i know i will eventually play them all, i wanted to play them in order.

Yeah, looks great, but forgive me if i don't hold my breath after all of this time.

The native american lore elements seem interesting as i can't say i have ever seen them done in a game. No idea how fun those wall walk things will be. I guess this will really be a 3d game.

Yeah, thanks for the help. I think i selected computers or something as the category to search under (wasn't in the mood to see the 100,00 pairs of gothic clothing at the moment   ) and so that is likely why i didn't see those two copies.

Well, wish me luck i guess.

well, i just lost an ebay auction for both the gothics literally at the last few seconds (damn people) so i need some other source to get Gothic. Gothic 2 is on sale at a few places new still, but i can't even find gothic 1 used. Well, that isn't exactly true as i saw it on amazon used for around $50...

So anyone know a place i can get gothic 1 (hopefully with gothic 2) for a price that isn't insane?

Man, this better be some major screw up you are referring to.  Anything less and I'm going to be disappointed.   I'm half expecting a black screen with the words "You Win, Thankyou for playing Knights 2" in the middle of the screen and then I'm dropped to DOS.

Lets say you are playing half life 2 and towards the end of the game, the game is replaced by black & white...

While the game does sound like it has every feature i would ever have wanted in an rpg (well, i would have preferred a post-apocalypse setting, but nothing is perfect), the reports of the game being majorly bugged are most troubling.

I think I, like others, will be waiting for patches to come out, and if not, I can always go back to kotor2 or something heh

They are about the only company who could do it. Them and Bioware. Thats about it. Or do you secertly want Spiderweb software to take up Fallout?

Well, personally i do believe bioware woud be better for this job, but only time will tell.
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FALLOUT 3 on: May 23, 2005, 10:39:42 PM
To the people attacking the righteous (ok, maybe i am a little biased  Tongue ) fallout fans out there: Do you really know so little about life in general that you're surprised that a group of people is against possible changes that radically change the very nature of an object they love? In this day and age of dumbing down games for console kiddies, we must remain eternally vigilant lest we find ourselves playing halflife 3 in some moronic overhead fps view.

A fallout mmorpg... where to begin. I am mostly sided towards the nay side here. On one hand, the main reason i loved the fallouts (other than that they were great rpgs with a lot of depth, something you don't see anymore other than the rare gem) was the post apocalyptic setting so in some ways, i would like to live it in a mmorpg. The problem with mmorpgs is that they are grinds with impersonal quests (lets be honest here, every mmorpg claims to be different and yet i am still waiting for that one...) that paint the player as just another person who has NO effect on the world and that is everything that fallout is not!

i would agree that Bethesda is probably not the best company to make a new fallout. While i do believe they make good games, i believe their version of the mmorpg is radically different from what fallout was. They make HUGE rpgs with impersonal npcs and large generic areas, while fallout had smaller areas with greatly detailed features and npcs. Of course they both focus a lot on side quests and give the power of deciding when to do the main quest to the user (sort of for fallout1).

Of course i would still buy kotor 3 in the hopes they actually finish it... I also had a huge amount of fun with kotor 2 (before the end part).

You are right.  I'm not done yet.  Just headed to Korriban after finishing Dxun/Onderon (sp?).  I believe this to be my last planet, but there is some mention of going back to Onderon.  I don't expect to be disappointed.  KOTOR 1 had a very, very short cut scene ending (for the Light Side).  It's funny because I read your post very slowly, word by word, ready to avert my eyes quickly in case there was spoiler in there.

I'm confused.  So there is a KOTOR 3 in development???  I really don't care if they ever change anything in these games.  Just give me more stories to enjoy and more planets to visit and more beautiful computer generated Jedi women (like Bastilla & Visus) to fall in love with!

I would think it would be kind of hard to comment on something you haven't experienced yet, but i would be very interested in your opinions on the ending after you have finished the game.

oh and I liked the ending in kotor 1 and I saw both of them. Bah this thread is making me want to install the game again. I never finished it as light side and even though i hear the ending doesn't change based on alignment, i would like to experience the game up to there.

Also, dark side jedi masters are gods able to destroy whole armies in seconds

As I said before, the problem with this isn't that they have created a system to reward PVP, the problem is that they have created a system to reward killing quest givers for lower level characters.

Oh and what reward is that? please do answer because i was under the impression that non faction boss npcs gave NO honor.

well, now that i think of it, there might actually be a reward to killing SOME civilians, they stop summoning guards and attacking you when they are dead. You want to stop quest givers from dying? make them totally non combat, immune to ae abilities and put in SEVERE dishonor penalties. Now there is no reason to attack them other than to piss people off and you can't say you mistakenly cast an ae on them, so if someone is killing these actual civilians often, they are going to feel it and rightfully so.
21  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW -- Level 60 kills level 10 -- No dishonor. Huh????? on: May 01, 2005, 03:03:12 AM
Cleric7, the reason why people generally try to start pvp in the low level zones is because if you try to pvp in the high level zones, you will end up fighting guards more than players.

This is why i generally attack crossroads (in small guild raids, NOT the huge 40 man newbie alliance zergs that camp tm 70% of the day). I pvp to fight other players, NOT guards.

Ebonstone, why should i get dishonor from defending a friend? I would think i would gain honor for defending the weak? If a crack addict attacks your mother with a knife and you shoot him, is that dishonorable? Should you have let the fight finish before stepping in?

Now nothing happens if you get a dk, but some people want them really to hurt you. So much so that you may not even be able to help your lower level friend. I have the perfect solution to this though, delete the pvp servers. Problem solved since now only people who seek out pvp will be killed.

If you are hostile to my faction or myself either directly (attacking) or indirectly (healing/helping other people who are attacking), I should be able to attack you without being penalized like i am doing something wrong. If you are non combat and much lower level, well, maybe that is another thing, but that is only a problem on the pvp servers as the non pvp servers already have a system in place to stop that from happening. My greatest fear is that they will ruin the pvp on the normal servers to appease a few whiners on the pvp server who couldn't figure out what they were signing up for.
22  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW -- Level 60 kills level 10 -- No dishonor. Huh????? on: April 30, 2005, 09:04:33 PM
The whole idea of dishonor is stupid and it cannot be done fairly unless you could make some "has done hostile actions against my faction" tag to tell the difference between lowbies that are minding thier own business and lowbies that are killing our healers.

Imagine this: you are helping your level 30 priest friend level as a lvl 60. A lvl 45 ud (lets say you are alliance) comes up and starts emoting you. He then kills your friend and there is NOTHING you can do to help him without getting a dk. He then emotes you again before walking away, knowing that you can't touch him.

Then there is always the ae example. pvp lowbies following mages around, hoping the mage will use an ae spell.

The civilian dishonor thing is also stupid. It seems some idiot at blizzard thought it would be fun to have civilian npcs that you get dishonor for killing, summon MASSIVE amounts of guards and sometimes even attack you. This is why even civilians get killed often. IF blizzard made them actual civilians (ie totally non combat), they wouldn't get killed nearly so much.
23  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Flagship Studios finally announces project...Hellgate:London on: April 29, 2005, 03:53:28 PM
I will be watching it in the hopes that they learn from their mistakes in diablow 2.

1) lack of content (no, you can't fool players into thinking the same levels repeated 3 times is 3 times the content).

2) lack of depth in rpg elements (come on man, at least give us a quest deeper than Go here, kill this, and some dialogue would be nice too. just because you are an action rpg, doesn't mean you have to forsake everything that makes an rpg an rpg other than the items/leveling).

3) class balance problems (ww barbs early on, fw sorcs later on. the person who didn't see a problem with a fw that could nearly instantly kill any non boss should be tazored, in the testicles).

Diablo 2 was a pretty fun game, until you completed the game on normal. hell, maybe it was even fun for a little while past that, but it does get boring rather quickly. Which is sad since the classes were pretty interesting.

oh and as a pvp loving ex barb, i would have liked hellgate to have some more pvp elements. Diablo 2's pvp wasn't entirely balanced (you would be instantly killed if you walked through a fw unless you had fire damage reduction gear, gear which they later nerfed, and they could spam them enough to cover a LARGE area) but it was fun.
24  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW patch today on: April 19, 2005, 10:08:07 PM
I agree olaf.

Anyway though, anyone who played on test for more than a minute knows that the test server had massive problems. There was so much pvp around the southshore/tm area that you can nearly walk to tm along a paved path of dead bodies from southshore. This caused MASSIVE lag as every step you took you were loading about 50 bodies.

If they haven't fixed that, battlegrounds will not work AT ALL. it will also mean that it will be impossible to level in either of those two cities.

oh and for a fun note, a while back, 2-3 RAID groups of horde attacked ironforge on bronzebeard. The alliance quickly mounted a defence of which the guild i am in played a large part since we had a raid group coming back from a try at onxyia. The battle was ended nearly without a blow. The lag was so bad that single hordes would run to the if king, attack him and then for like 40 seconds nobody would be able to attack him until he instantly died as the server caught up. The server crashed shortly after that.

so in conclusion, WOW CANNOT handle large pvp raids.

26  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW 1.4.0 patch notes on: April 16, 2005, 07:21:40 PM
Skeld: You can't be stunlocking and using ambush/backstab at the same time.

Something priests like yourself don't realize is if you aren't stunned for 1 second, we are dead. trying to "stunlock" you is the only chance we have against the god of battle, the shadow priest.

Being horde, you have NO room at all to complain about fear counters. How do you think alliance feel having to deal with 50% of horde being undead? It could be worse though, you could be alliance going up against both that trinket and wotf instead of just some half assed fear break.

oh and props to you for not jumping on the ud bandwagon Tongue

They also nerfed ambush on test so that should make you happy...
27  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW 1.4.0 patch notes on: April 14, 2005, 07:31:10 PM
It isn't overpowered because it has no immunity timer, it just breaks it much the same as the gnome racial does. This also means it is nothing compared to wotf since warlocks at least (i admit that it is better against priests) can cast fear more than once in a short while.

I have also heard that the cd on the item is 5 minutes which is quite a bit longer than wotf. not to mention that an ud rogue can get both wotf and that item i believe :?

Personally, i think that ud shadow priests could use an effective counter such as alliance rogues with that trinket, but ud rogues with it are going to make the poor alliance warlocks cry.
28  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW 1.4.0 patch notes on: April 13, 2005, 10:26:08 PM
Fuzzballx: well, fuzzball, i agree with nearly his whole post except that wow is rock/paper/scissors. Yes, some classes are better against some other classes than others, but the idea that most people have that rogues counter magic users is laughable.

People have a lot of misinformation about the rogue class (things like a mage can be killed in 2 hits by a rogue, rogues kill priests and that rogues are the best 1vs1 class) and i like to at least try to help set them straight.

Yes, you are probably right that the large alliance vs horde battles that happen whenever one side attacks a town are probably not real pvp. I must have forgoten that that can only happen when blizzard labels the area "battleground." This also means that the honor system can't be tested on the test server. Someone needs to log on to test and tell them it isn't real pvp so the players there can stop paving a path of dead bodies between southshore and tauren mill  Do you think people aren't going to be expecting to be attacked in battlegrounds? Do you honestly believe the mage won't have his finger on that blink button when running around so that he can get away if attacked bya  rogue? I don't know about you, but my warrior WILL be in defence stance when running around the battlegrounds and he WILL be prepared for an ambush.

All I have said have been based on my experiences with a pure dagger bs/ambush build and a sword using subt/ass build (i did use other builds before 60 though), if that seems like flailing to you, then so be it.

Note: I have alot of high end equipment, but this is just a counterpoint to guys saying rogues > all.

As an Arms/Fury warrior (standard 31/20) with a Reaper, and all the +crit gear plate I can find, I absolutely destroy rogues. Overpower crits for 1k+, MS crits for 1.2k. They can't vanish (deep wounds bleeding), they can't run (hamstring/piercing howl > sprint), and they can't damage you faster than you damage them. You're always enraged, +40% melee damage, since their crit rate is so high.

Deep wounds, rend, hamstring, improved overpower, piercing howl (spam this to knock them out of stealth), disarm, and the always amazing mortal strike are all rogue killing tools.

I've taken full Shadowcraft rogues, with a Felstriker offhand Rend mainhand with 60% or more hps left.

The old rock paper scissors mentality is definately here: warriors > rogues > casters > warriors. Casters have so many tools available to keep warriors at range, while rogues can stealth in and stunlock/kill them before they can use these tools. Its fairly balanced, but you have to look at the whole picture. Group PvP is where the balance lies, not in dueling or 1 on 1 fights. A holy priest is laughed at in a 1on1 fight, but pair him with a 31/20 warrior in a group, and I guarantee you people will think twice about jumping him.

rock paper scissors my ass.

A rogue only stands a CHANCE against a decent mage if they have sprint up, otherwise forget it. shadow Priests just hands down destroy rogues unless you are fotm undead. Good druids are also VERY hard to kill (although this may change with the root changes). Warlocks aren't too bad, unless they have a succubus and then you will be hard pressed to kill them (unless you are fotm undead of course).

So really, what magic using class do rogues cancel out like a warrior does a rogue? I am not complaining about warriors since i am also making a war alt myself and think they should have the advantage against rogues, i just find people saying rogues destroy casters funny. Yeah, we kill the newbie mages who don't even blink (this annoys me to no end as it breaks my cheap shot, sprint schedule) and warlocks who decide not to have succubus up (why warlocks, why?), but that is about all.

Outside of dueling situations, which I already stated are pointless, rogues do and will tear it up.

Their main function is to cause chaos behind enemy lines. Nothing quite like seeing a groups priest drop in 5 seconds to two rogues. Unfortunately, ambush/bs builds are key for stuff like this, none of that combat crap I've been seeing from most rogues lately.

I still hold that rogues > casters in a real world situation. Having the element of suprise on a class you can kill in under 10 seconds is an amazing bonus.

The priest's group would have to be full of morons for that to happen. Priest can just ae fear the rogues (Unless you are ud again) and then the rogues are dead since there are a ton of ways to disable the ability to stealth once revealed (rightly so of course).

Everything i have said has been talking about real pvp (ie not duels) though. Maybe it is different on pvp servers, but on my normal server, if i see Bob the undead mage pvp enabled, i know for a fact that he is either A) ready and looking for pvp, or B) a newbie. A is almost as common as B now and growing. So since Bob is ready for pvp and since he knows that rogues are common as hell (pisses me off that so many people picked rogue after i did and makes me wish i had started with a warrior instead), he will be just waiting for some poor fool to read a comment like "rogues > mages" and attack him so that he can blink out of the cheap shot and then start killed the rogue.

Yes, rogues are better in real pvp than duels, but magic users are not a walk over. If you are paying attention, you can generally kill a warlock, unless they are using a succubus, but the others ones... you better hope they stink (and a lot of the mages seem to, thank god. maybe they were diablow 2 fire wall sorcs?) or you will be lucky to run for your life.

oh and just until recently i was a a pure dagger bs/ambush rogue using barman shanker. I had been wanting to switch to ass/subt with a non dagger as i believe that char does nearly as good damage, with MUCH more utility and no positionals. My experience with my now subt/ass sword rogue show me that i was right (in my opinion at least). I use Sword of zeal with crusader on it (if you are on bronzebeard, have 2 righteous orbs and want crusader, tell Talok and i will hook you up for some token fee) and plan to switch to dal'rend set whenever i get it.

I won't say i die in pvp a lot to other classes, as i don't, but this is because of stealth. I simply don't attack warriors or priests alone and generally unless there is great need. Generally the warriors like to charge our plds/wars and that is when i strike

oh and Koz: you are wrong. wotf is HUGE. in 20 seconds, a warlock will die from a ud rogue, no question about it. in 20 seconds, a priest will likely die from a ud rogue, something that every other rogue dreams about doing against a half decent shadow priest.

oh and fuzzballx: that group of 56 priest, 59 mage, and 60 warrior must have been afk to lose to a single rogue (or they were just terrible players).

yeah, the end game content is well... not there.

My activities as a 60:

1) farm
2) instance
3) pvp
4) play warrior alt who has totally twinked out gear, including near top of the line armor enchants (sometimes being an enchanter is actually good).

I agree unbreakable. I would love to see the core features of shadowbane (a focus on guild warfare, cities and sieges) better implemented. Personally, i am getting tired of mmorpgs focusing on small scale pvp. If i wanted to have a 5 vs 5 battle, i wouldn't pay for a mmorpg.

mmorpgs are supposed to be massive. More mmorpgs should try to incorperate the city based pvp features of shadowbane.

"Work is still being done on the character name affected realms, as well as the extended maintenance realms. We apologize for the downtime, and are trying to provide more information in a fuller text within the next few hours."

Screw you blizzard!

can anyone explain the magic system? at first glance it looks like you can only use each spell X amount of times, but then how would a pure magic user get through the game if he couldn't cast any spells after one or two fights?

the idea of slowing time and stuff like that strikes my interest, but after using all of my spells, i just messed around with a warrior.

Unbreakable, your logic is flawed. This game is not just some free service they are providing out of the goodness of their hearts, we pay money for it. Yes, i agree they want the servers up even more than us because they are smart enough to realize that people are getting pissed off with their incompetence.

One time i can understand, hell even a few times is ok i guess, but to constantly have these problems is NOT acceptable. If bronzebeard becomes similar to the doomed 20, i don't know that i will be staying with wow.

If you buy a computer only to find out it has 56mb of memory instead of the 1k you payed for, would you complain? Why would you complain? would it be  because if you didn't complain, the company would think there is nothing wrong going on? The same is true in this case.

Some day, i hope that mmorpgs will stop treating their customers like shit, but i doubt that will be today, or any other day in wow's life.

oh and bronzebeard was down 2 extra hours after mantainence was supposed to be done (with no remarks that i saw). Then after a little while, we got the 15 minute "we screwed up and have to take server down in 15 minutes" message. They said it would take 45 minutes. then 2 hours later they said it should be done in an hour. in 20 minutes, it will be hours from the "it will be done in an hour" message.

Totally agree olaf. Bronzebeard has been down pretty much all day. I am tired of this. They have problems EVERY server mantainence. If i had made my character on one of the big 20 i would have quit the game much earlier since those select servers are down more often than not. I thought i was immune to that being on bronzebeard, but it seems i was wrong.

Knightshade, the whole focus of shadowbane was pvp so if that wasn't your thing, any further shadowbane games won't be interesting to you either.

I did like shadowbane myself and they had some damn nice ideas, but they failed in some implementation of those ideas. After i had left shadowbane, i kept an eye on it. The game was self destructing. The realms would be controlled by two opposing alliances and one would lose. The loser would be kos to pretty much the entire realm and have to quit the game since they could never rebuild their city (and thus their power). The winner would eventually get bored having nobody to fight and either quit, or break up and start the process again.
