I'd love any info on Diablo3...

I think I'm glad I never joined a guild in WoW.   I get enough drama from my internet forums.  Tongue

If it's a blizzard announcement and it's not Starcraft 2  I'll be the guy on the news getting arrested after their headquarters explodes in a fiery burst of hate and anger combined with napalm and c4.

See, I feel the same way about Diablo 3.

How many hundreds of RTS games have appeared since Starcraft?

How many Diablo clones?

You RTS people have a wealth of crappy games to choose from.  We Diablo fans have to chose among Dungeon Seige, Sacred and freakin Harbinger.

At least Fate threw us a bone last year.   Tongue

As for Diablo 2, I cannot go back to it since I have never played it.  Maybe if I can get it real real cheap I might do so.  Sounds like Guild Wars might not be for me.  I just didn't want to pay for the WoW service, so that is out.  Thanks for the info guys.

If you don't want to get Diablo 2, you can always download FATE for $20.

It has no mutliplayer, but it sounds like you're a solo player so that's no loss.

407  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ultima V reborn! on: December 23, 2005, 06:25:24 PM
Played with it briefly last night.   Looks like they did a good job with the conversion, although I still struggle with making my character go up and down stairs, which I think is a big limitation of the DS engine.  Hopefully there aren't too many multi-story structures, although one of the first places you visit has at least two floors.

It certainly could be done legally. The agent in your example would setup the tap and within 72 hours some lawyer from the NSA would step in front of the FISA court, inform them of the tap and the reasons and get the retro-active warrant.

Yes, the agent that intercepts an Outlook email invite for the next day has plenty of time.  The agent that finds an ongoing call, or one immediately to happen, has no time.

No time to do what?

The warrants can be acquired up to 72 hours after the wiretap.

The agent can tap an outgoing call without delay and still apply for a FISA warrant.

The full game runs fine on my aging 1.6 Ghz PIV with 512 MB of PC-133 RAM once I turned graphics down to "medium".   I can't see a difference in quality, but it went from bogging down in the end-game to running nice and smoothly.

EDIT - you might also turn off the in-game music and see if that helps speed things up.

Quote from: "Autistic Angel"
Two separate excerpts from the article on CNN:

But DeLay countered that assessment later in a news conference by saying that the onus for responding to emergencies fell to local officials.

"It's the local officials trying to handle the problem. When they can't handle the problem, they go to the state, and the state does what they can to, and if they need assistance from FEMA and the federal government they ask for it and it's delivered," DeLay said.

Apparently DeLay has never perused the DHS website

In the event of a terrorist attack, natural disaster or other large-scale emergency, the Department of Homeland Security will assume primary responsibility on March 1st for ensuring that emergency response professionals are prepared for any situation. This will entail providing a coordinated, comprehensive federal response to any large-scale crisis and mounting a swift and effective recovery effort.

415  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Could San Andreas' AO rating become a good thing? on: July 31, 2005, 04:12:57 PM

The real obstacle is distribution.  Most stores won't stock games rated AO.  You could circumvent this through direct distribution (which I believe VU did with the AO version of the latest Leisure Suit Larry game) but it cuts out a sizable market.

Good point.  I was in Target today and they had a sign taped to the glass display booth saying that GTA:SA was no longer available because Target policy is to not stock AO rated games.

Which is doubly embarrassing for Target, since the sign implied they had put GTA:SA in their weekly ad.

I'm hoping to pick up BF2 this month so i'll be looking for servers around the third week of August as well.

What is the long-term outlook for this server?  Do you guys hope to keep it up for the next few months?
417  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Longhorn becomes Windows Vista on: July 22, 2005, 07:01:55 PM
What exactly does "Vista" bring to the table?

From the few articles I've read, it seems the main differences are in the GUI.  They take advantage of 3D cards to introduce animation and transparent windows.

Last I heard they yanked WinFS from the O/S and plan to introduce it as a "Free Addition" after release.

Without WinFS, what is the motivation to upgrade?

Not entirely

Several of the military guards identified in the first batch of Abu Ghraib photos made public in the spring of 2004 have been convicted and punished for their roles in the abuse, which included intimidation with guard dogs, mock torture, public humiliation, and forced nudity, a Muslim taboo. Specialist Charles A. Graner Jr., whom military authorities identified as the ringleader, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, demoted and dishonorably discharged from the Army.

Totally agree.

For the past few years I've assumed that EA was saving the next Madden engine for the next generation of consoles.

Instead, it appears EA simply bought out the competition and will put higher-res textures on the same crappy engine we've been playing for years.   :x

I am curious about eveyone's opinion on this type of practice in general... I personally don't mind people selling cash, items, characters, whatever, from whatever game for cash. how does it hurt anything? The people who want to buy it will just be more motivated to stay playing longer (I know I did) and the people who don't want to buy it don't have to.

Next time you want to buy a blue item at the AH and the buyout is 900G - then you'll understand how it hurts the game.
424  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Gold Farmers on: March 14, 2005, 05:30:40 PM
I would hope the bannings are for selling gold for cash, rather than farming.

As long as you're not using a bot, how does farming (whether gold, or Turtle Scales, or Elemental drops, or whatever) violate the TOS?
425  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / PVP Reward System on: March 11, 2005, 05:13:17 PM
All of which is only a problem if you have some intense, overwhelming need to be the best on the server.

I'll be perfectly happy playing my hunter on the Battlegrounds as a rank 3 or 4 or whatever PvPer.  If the Battleground gameplay is as fun as it sounds, I really won't care about my "rank".

Let the powergamers have the top ranks - doesn't concernn me, and it gives the no-life types something to work for.

The easiest way is to go up into alterac mountains, then run down the valley on the back side, staying far left of the house at the bottom. Hit the lake and swim around the big rock wall which is the undercity and come out in tristifal glades. Then head north to the monestary.

That did the trick!

And, to bring this back on-topic, I did a portion of SM and came away with about 4 gold worth of stuff.  Not bad for an hour and half worth of work!

I could solo the elites outside the instance, but the instance itself required help as a level 42 hunter.

Sure, but unscheduled downtime is an entirely different matter - although 6 hours is a long time.  Glad I don't work there.

This is scheduled downtime - that should take place when populations are at the lowest, and i have a hard time believe 9 AM Eastern is the low point.

Wouldn't 1 AM pacific/ 4 AM Eastern make much more sense?  The middle of the night is the time for updates - not early morning.

If I took our network down from 6 - 10 AM, I wouldn't have a job for very long...
440  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: (WoW) Secondary Skills on: December 30, 2004, 07:26:38 PM
Quote from: "Butterknife"

I know all this.  You miss my main point -- reducing downtime is not fun.  Here's the thing -- first aid was "fun" because you could use it as a way to heal, even if you weren't a healer.  Even in a battle, assuming you could keep from getting hit.  Fishing was "fun" because you could catch random stuff, you never knew what you might get.  And, you could make money off of that stuff.

I'm with you on fishing - I know that fishing macros were a problem, but eliminating all catches except fish is not a good solution.  I hope they up the "drop rate" on other items a bit.

I think you're already shown why first aid is meant to be for downtime - because allowing in-combat heals steps all over the toes of the healing classes, which should be the only way other than potions to heal during combat.  Potions either have to be purchased or produced with alchemy, and taking alchemy means you can't take other professions.  First Aid is available to everyone, as is fishing, which is why I think they shouldn't be as valuable as the actual trade skills.
