401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Civ 4 demo on: December 01, 2005, 06:44:23 PM
The full game runs fine on my aging 1.6 Ghz PIV with 512 MB of PC-133 RAM once I turned graphics down to "medium".   I can't see a difference in quality, but it went from bogging down in the end-game to running nice and smoothly.

EDIT - you might also turn off the in-game music and see if that helps speed things up.

Two separate excerpts from the article on CNN:

But DeLay countered that assessment later in a news conference by saying that the onus for responding to emergencies fell to local officials.

"It's the local officials trying to handle the problem. When they can't handle the problem, they go to the state, and the state does what they can to, and if they need assistance from FEMA and the federal government they ask for it and it's delivered," DeLay said.

Apparently DeLay has never perused the DHS website

In the event of a terrorist attack, natural disaster or other large-scale emergency, the Department of Homeland Security will assume primary responsibility on March 1st for ensuring that emergency response professionals are prepared for any situation. This will entail providing a coordinated, comprehensive federal response to any large-scale crisis and mounting a swift and effective recovery effort.

405  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Could San Andreas' AO rating become a good thing? on: July 31, 2005, 04:12:57 PM

The real obstacle is distribution.  Most stores won't stock games rated AO.  You could circumvent this through direct distribution (which I believe VU did with the AO version of the latest Leisure Suit Larry game) but it cuts out a sizable market.

Good point.  I was in Target today and they had a sign taped to the glass display booth saying that GTA:SA was no longer available because Target policy is to not stock AO rated games.

Which is doubly embarrassing for Target, since the sign implied they had put GTA:SA in their weekly ad.

I'm hoping to pick up BF2 this month so i'll be looking for servers around the third week of August as well.

What is the long-term outlook for this server?  Do you guys hope to keep it up for the next few months?
407  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Longhorn becomes Windows Vista on: July 22, 2005, 07:01:55 PM
What exactly does "Vista" bring to the table?

From the few articles I've read, it seems the main differences are in the GUI.  They take advantage of 3D cards to introduce animation and transparent windows.

Last I heard they yanked WinFS from the O/S and plan to introduce it as a "Free Addition" after release.

Without WinFS, what is the motivation to upgrade?

Totally agree.

For the past few years I've assumed that EA was saving the next Madden engine for the next generation of consoles.

I am curious about eveyone's opinion on this type of practice in general... I personally don't mind people selling cash, items, characters, whatever, from whatever game for cash. how does it hurt anything? The people who want to buy it will just be more motivated to stay playing longer (I know I did) and the people who don't want to buy it don't have to.

Next time you want to buy a blue item at the AH and the buyout is 900G - then you'll understand how it hurts the game.

All of which is only a problem if you have some intense, overwhelming need to be the best on the server.

I'll be perfectly happy playing my hunter on the Battlegrounds as a rank 3 or 4 or whatever PvPer.  If the Battleground gameplay is as fun as it sounds, I really won't care about my "rank".

Let the powergamers have the top ranks - doesn't concernn me, and it gives the no-life types something to work for.

That did the trick!

And, to bring this back on-topic, I did a portion of SM and came away with about 4 gold worth of stuff.  Not bad for an hour and half worth of work!

I could solo the elites outside the instance, but the instance itself required help as a level 42 hunter.

Quote from: "Butterknife"

I know all this.  You miss my main point -- reducing downtime is not fun.  Here's the thing -- first aid was "fun" because you could use it as a way to heal, even if you weren't a healer.  Even in a battle, assuming you could keep from getting hit.  Fishing was "fun" because you could catch random stuff, you never knew what you might get.  And, you could make money off of that stuff.

I'm with you on fishing - I know that fishing macros were a problem, but eliminating all catches except fish is not a good solution.  I hope they up the "drop rate" on other items a bit.

I think you're already shown why first aid is meant to be for downtime - because allowing in-combat heals steps all over the toes of the healing classes, which should be the only way other than potions to heal during combat.  Potions either have to be purchased or produced with alchemy, and taking alchemy means you can't take other professions.  First Aid is available to everyone, as is fishing, which is why I think they shouldn't be as valuable as the actual trade skills.

Quote from: "Butterknife"

First aid from what I understand has been reduced to what cooking was all along, just a way to decrease downtime between battles.  But unless I'm missing something, it has lost it's usefulness as well from what I understand.

As far as I can tell, first-aid was always meant to be used out of combat.  That's how the early bandages worked - why would the higher-level items work differently?

Quote
Why not just remove fishing from the game altogether?  At this point, I see no more purpose to it.  It used to be fun, but now it isn't.  You used to be able to make money off of it, and there was a fun element to not knowing what you would catch.  As of right now, I know what I will catch -- just fish.  And one of two kinds, depending on where I am.  So there is no "Look, a locked chest!  I wonder what's in it?" any more, just "gee, another bristle whisker catfish, 1 copper piece ..."

Hunters use fishing to get food for their pets.  Everyone else can cook that cook to reduce downtime.

Interesting - I feel the same way about CG.  I check the MMORPG forum a few times a week, but I feel much more welcome at OO than here at CG.  The "off-topic" forums at OO are much more active than here, while there seems to be more gaming discussion on this site.  However, when I visit CG, I feel like an outsider who has joined a party full of close friends that seem more intent on discussing things among themselves than welcoming new points of view.

I think the whole bittorrent thing is stupid.  I have a limit on my outbound traffic/day.  If I go over my download rate gets reduced.  I'm playing to play their game, I shouldn't have to pay to distribute their patches too.

There is a program out there called NetLimiter (find here).  Granted you have to pay in order to use it after 28 days, but you can limit the amount of upload for each program, so you could cap the upload while the download goes.  May be something to look at.

From a blue-text post on the official boards:

Quote
In the downloader, if you check the box next to "Disable peer to peer..." it will disable the P2P aspect of the downloader.

I would imagine that would stop the uploads...
