361  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Warning: Lower Level Players Don't Go Here! on: December 15, 2004, 10:15:38 PM
Quote from: "Eco-Logic"
Exodor, that is a great map.  With those two maps combined I should never get lost again!

This weekend, I plan to play with that map and thottbot up on my laptop and WoW on my desktop PC.

Which kind of scares me - I fear before long I'll be living in my parent's basement, wearing nothing but my underwear and a soiled white T-shirt playing WoW 23 hours a day while the empty pizza boxes and 12-packs of Mountain Dew pile up around me.    Tongue
362  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Warning: Lower Level Players Don't Go Here! on: December 15, 2004, 10:07:52 PM
I tried to get to Red Ridge mountains that way, but when I saw the level ???? guys I hightailed it back the way I came.

There's a great map here that gives level ranges for various sections of the map.  Quite useful for staying out of high-level areas.
363  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW Question: Hats/Helmets on: December 15, 2004, 09:16:00 PM
I know shoulder armor doesn't apear until around 16-20 or so.

I would imagine helmets and hats are another item that doesnt' appear until higher level.

The lowest level headgear I found on thottbot was level 24.  There are some level-1 required helmets, but they drop from level 30-40 critters and are bind on pickup

365  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW servers down! on: December 14, 2004, 05:43:20 PM
I play every morning before I go to work, from 6:15 -7:30 AM Pacific.

Which, of course, is right in their maintenance window.   :x

Why don't they do this sort of thing at 4 AM?  What, their server guys want to sleep or something?

Selfish jerks.
366  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW: Many nice players amongst some idiots on: December 13, 2004, 10:42:44 PM
I've only done pick-up groups so far (since I still haven't joined AH - partly out of laziness and partly because I solo almost exlusively).  So far I've only run into one bad group, and it wasn't that the group was bad but more the leader was a complete asshat.

I've found adding such people to my /ignore list both keeps me from grouping with them AND saves me from seeing their inane /1 ramblings...   biggrin

Other than that, every group I've joined has been effective, if quiet.  People may play well and help the group, but the folks in WoW that I've gropued with are not very chatty.

I've been giving Hunter a good long look.  In all liklihood I'll spend my talents emphasizing melee combat though, which would be poor.  On the other hand having a pet is really fun.
.

A hunter with a melee emphasis would be different from the 90% of us Hunters who are just pouring all their talent points into Marksmanship.   Tongue

I love ranged classes, and the hunter is a blast.  Useful in groups because you can plug away with your gun OR fight melee (as long as you don't get too much aggro).  Very powerful solo, particularly with a good pet to hold aggro.

You can train guns at Ironforge for 10s.  You can train swords probably at the Elves capital city, and definitely at Stormwind.  I trained 2H swords with my hunter and love the animation.  Duel wielding is probably the way to go eventually though, more stat bonuses for the two weapons.

I dunno about the dual-wield thing.

My hunter got dual-wield at 20, but the increased miss rates were driving me crazy.  I had a total of +4 AGI from the two weapons.

Last night my level 21 hunter found a sweet 2-H axe at the Auction House with a +8 AGI bonus.  I dont' miss nearly as much anymore AND I doubled my AGI bonus!

Dual-Wield looks very cool, and if I find two weapons with good stat bonuses I'll switch back, but it appears 2-H weapons have at least twice the stat bonuses of common 1-H weapons, without the DMG and hit rate penalties of dual-wielding.

Also, correct me if I am wrong, but if you want a cat for a pet as a hunter, you need to keep him fed with fish. So another reason to consider fishing.

My kitty eats meat or fish - so fishing isn't necessary as long as you save the meat from boars and other critters you kill.

I have no skill in fishing and I've never come close to running out of food (level 20 Dwarf hunter)

Hunter is my favorite class - but the Night Elf starting area is by far my least favorite area in the game.

Here in Portland they're playing what i hope will be her new single, "24".

I think it's the best song on the album, which is saying quite a bit.

Perhaps our intelligence was flawed. At the end of the day, however, at least we didn't simply postpone the inevitable. And at least we exposed the UN for the ineffective and corrupt organization it is.

So let me understand...

The UN Sanctions were effectively stopping Saddam fromm acquiring WMD and cranking up his weapons prorams.

But the UN is ineffective?

I just dont appreciate the immediate devisiveness that was created by having the other forum pop up. I mean, after all, its very hard to argue that this site and this forum aren't going to be far better supported and far more resources for a large community. Did the people that started that other board give this place a chance? Was a stricter limitation on talking politics SO important that people just up and left like that? The same people that cry out against the loss of Gone Gold wont even give this place a chance because there is no religion and politics forum? Cut off your nose to spite your face? Seems...petty...yet in a curious twist someone suggested in a prior thread that those that chose to remain without a R&P board were somehow not as "mature" or grown up as those that wanted one-all because this site started as a Console game site. Dear god, help us all from people that incredibly myopic.

Why are you assuming Console Gold is the obvious choice to replace GG?  It's not like we had a chance to decide where we were going to move - the forums just weren't there one day.  Just because many made the choice to migrate to CG doesn't make CG the "Official Replacement Site for GG" (tm).

Personally, I find the proposition that those who don't just follow the herd to CG are "petty" or "egotistical" rather insulting.

The internet is big enough for both boards.

Personally I'd like to see it as an OPTIONAL feature established when you create the group. That way if you're just making a pickup group, you can invite anyone you want and if they die that's their problem and they inherit the full penalty. But if you're playing with friends you can turn group sharing on and everyone benefits from splitting xp debt.

To piggyback on that idea - what if they had group XP debt optional, but if you opt for it the group gets an XP BONUS?

Kind of a risk vs. reward thing - you can get more XP, but you risk getting group XP debt as well.

 :?:
381  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Poll: EQ2 or WOW on: October 15, 2004, 06:02:47 PM
I"m a casual player who doesn't play often enough to have "regular" groups, so I rely on pick-up groups.

EQ2 I think has eliminated the incentive for pick-up groups - who wants to risk having one moron in the group rack up XP debt?  At best, pick up groups will disband after the first death - and as most people know, death in pick-up groups is kind of a given.

Oh - another thought I had.  For books/music/movies/games, I find that half.com is a much better option as long as you don't need to sell the items and/or get the cash immediately.  The whole issue with feedback and deadbeat buyers is largely non-existent.

I was just going to post the same thing.  If you have the time to wait, half.com is the shiznit:

-All you have to do is enter the UPC, and the product information is already in the system

-You can set the price you want

-You can leave the item on half.com FOREVER, at no charge.  Ever had an eBay auction that didn't seem to get much action?  With half.com, you set your price and just wait for the fish to bite (er... the buyer to click the link)

-Most important to me - half.com acts as the middle man.  You ALWAYS get paid

The only downside is half.com takes more out of each sale than eBay - but I'm more than willing to pay a little more for the comfort of avoiding crap like the OP talks about...

Wife and I got married last August and spent a week in Puerta Vallerta, Mexico.

We had a great time, although I got real sick of getting hassled to buy into a condo.  I saw one guy with a T-Shirt that said "I'm sorry, I already have a time-share".  I'm definately getting one of those before I go back to any Mexican resort towns.

Why would I want it in an online game that's already so graphically overdone that it would bring my PC to its knees?

Console Gold was here before us GG refugees migrated here.  While I want a P&R forum, this is their baby and they can do with it as they wish.

I loved GG because I could discuss virtually any subject I wished with a group of intelligent, articulate people, some of whom I came to know as friends.

Console Gold is not GG.  It's a great place, and the mods have been very welcoming - but this is THEIR community that we are chosing to join.  If they wish to ban P&R, that's their decision.  I will likely migrate elsewhere in that case, but I respect their right to police their forums as they wish.

I got a similar reaction yesterday when I was playing Civ3.

I was in the midst of crushing the villainous Zulus with my mighty Sioux army while my wife watched TV (a movie on "Lifetime", if you must know).  During a commercial, she turned and started asking about my game.

Her:  What are you playing?
Me:  It's called Civilization.
Her:  What are you doing?
Me:  Well, right now I'm using workers to irrigate the land around my cities - it makes them grow faster.

Her:  bewildered silence

I swear she thought I was playing a farming simulator.  It's probably for the best that I didn't try to explain why it was imperative that I crush the Zulus, nor why I was so anxious to crush the double-crossing Germans who had just declared war on me.

Because, from where she was sitting, I was spending three hours moving little colored icons around a map.  And that doesn't sound nearly as fun, does it?

My job is fairly secure (knock on wood) because they'll always need someone to do front-line tech support here, but I think my dreams of being a big network admin are over. I'm nothing but a glorified custodian for a network that is truly controlled by people hundreds of miles away.

Interesting - I'm in almost the same boat.

Our Citrix server is managed by Region Tech Support.

All WAN provisioning and configuring is handled by our corporate IT team.

Hell, I didn't even have logon privs to the local DC for the last few weeks, until I yelled about it today!

It says "Network Admin" next to my name, but  I'm really little more than local PC support and a helpdesk.

On the plus side, our internet access is unfiltered - but that also is managed by region staff, so that could change at any moment...   thumbsdown

As I've grown more used to the game, I've had to keep tweaking the sliders to keep things competitive.  When I started with Madden2005, it seemed every run was stopped in the backfield, but now I get 100+ most games (I play as KC, so that's pretty much what I expect!)
