I'm not a huge video game football fan (in fact I haven't bought a football game since the Dreamcast...), but I'm actually considering picking this one up now.  Looks like you can get it for $30 at Best Buy.

Same here.  I used to play a lot more with friends.  I was never much into Madden but I played a lot of NFL Gameday on the PSX.  I'm grabbed the android game and like it.  I think I'll stop at best buy tonight and see how much it is running there.

Are you guys interested in a GWJ vs GT team match?  I figure now is the best time while Harkonis and USMC Kato are distracted by Red Dead Redemption.

From iplaywinner, here's the first attempt I've seen at a tier list for the characters:

A: Rufus, Akuma, Abel, Dictator, Boxer, Ryu, Chun Li, Ibuki

B+: Zangief, E. Honda, Blanka, Sagat, Guile, T Hawk, Juri

B: El Fuerte, Fei Long, Dhalsim, Cammy, Ken, Seth, C. Viper, DeeJay

C: Adon, Dudley, Cody, Gouken, Claw

D: Rose, Gen, Hakan, Guy, Makoto, Sakura, Dan

Seems a little screwy, but I'm blocked from seeing the accompanying matchup chart that might justify things better.

I think Abel's new ultra has really helped him.  Blanka didn't change much so I'm not surprised he's still in about the same position.  I'm a bit surprised at Sagat's nerf.  I thought it was going to be a smaller nerf.  I'm a bit surprised that Ryu is behind anyone.  I still feel he's the strongest character and didn't really lose anything in Super.  At least he's got one "bad" matchup now even if it is just a 4.5 vs Abel.  I'm not sure what was added to Rufus so no idea why he's at the top now.  I'm also surprised at how far Ken fell.  Not disappointed but surprised.

Fun matches last night, guys.  Nice Abel, Kato.  proner you've got some annoying Oicho throws. Wonderpug your Fuerte is fun.  I've never seen it before.

The big question is will Tekken 6 and Soul Calibur have online play like the console versions?  If they do I think that will be a big selling point.  T6 online vs mode in my pocket?  Yes, please.

Archon was nice but I preferred Mail Order Monsters.  Way of the Exploding Fist was pretty cool, too.

10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Street Fighter IV Impressions on: April 16, 2009, 03:48:55 PM
Don't use Sakura.  She's one of the weaker characters.  Sagat is a good choice due to his high health.  Getting hit with him means less than getting hit with Sakura.  Sagat has some very good basic moves.  His FK is a good anti air hit and his dragon punch motion has been simplified (d/f, d/f, punch) and is also a very good anti-air.  Sagat's tiger shots (fireballs) are very good with short recovery.  His tiger knee is a great move to get close and does good damage. Sagat is fairly simple to learn as he only has a couple of different motions for special moves (f,d,d/f or d/f,d/f for dragon punches/tiger knee and d,d/f,f for tiger shots/fireballs).  Sagat is also someone that can become really good as you learn to do cancels into ultras.

I would practice the moves until you can do them 9 times out of 10 (if not 10 out of 10).  Don't worry too much about combos, yet.  You want to be able to do some basic ones but at your level getting good with anti-airs and spacing is the most important. jFK, cFK (jumping fierce kick, crouching fierce kick) is a decently damaging combo that is super easy to do.

Learn to punish mistakes.  You'll probably face a lot of Ken/Ryu players who do endless dragon punches (shoryukens).  Hit them on the way down or throw them when they land. If you have trouble with jump ins, practice them in training mode.  Record yourself jumping in and hitting FK, sweep.  Then play that back and the computer will do it over and over.  Practice anti-airs, back-dashing, and Focus Attacks.

Don't forget about light punches and kicks.  They have a lot of priority and can interrupt a lot of moves.

Once you have the basics down choose a character you like.  It is much easier to learn the basics of the game with someone like Sagat since he has high health (your matches will last longer).  Once you have the basics down a lot of things transfer from character to character.

Finally, get used to playing online in ranked matches.  The ranking system is quite lenient to new people as you never go below 0 battle points.  You also might hit up someone else online and play some casual games with them.  I'm sure they'll be willing to help you out.

I haven't had any problems within the game with the fightpad.  I don't think the buttons (start, select, turbo) are well marked and the pad is annoying to use for typing (seems to double hit letters regardless of the turbo setting).  I still prefer my namco arcade stick, though.  It's just what I'm used to.  I could probably get used the the pad if I had to.

I also wanted to see what the pros around here think of the Street Fighter IV FightStick from MadCatz?  I was thinking of picking one up, but have heard horror stories about a washer on the inside of the stick rubbing against some contacts on the board, which will eventually cause it to fail.  Has anyone bought one of these, or heard about this issue?

Since TiLT and I haven't played yet, why don't you guys get your game in?

I'm okay with it if everyone else is.

Thirteenth and I haven't played officially, so I'm okay with this.

Most of the Balrog's I've faced just seem to spam the b-f-FP/SP/LP move and then low or throw over and over.  It's like playing a shoto fireball spammer.

Anyone have trouble with the throw cancels?  Even when I know they're going to throw it seems to either not register anything or register LP.  I don't think I've cancelled a single throw yet.

Blanka's got a dash that is different than most (he has the regular one too).  He seems to be able to cover a lot of ground on the dash and do it repeatedly.  It works well to confuse several people last night.  I'll have to try back dashing and then blocking/jumping.

Blind selection for ranked is a no brainer, tbh.

I actually got the 5 online wins in a row achievement well as my first hatemail for using Sagat  calling ME a noob after beating a dude icon_lol

He is so goddamn powerful.

I switch to Rose and get my arse whooped.  And speaking of not-so-used fighters, Abel sucks.  I don't see anything redeeming or dangerous in his game.

I played an Abel who was really really good.  Ranked match, too.  The guy destroyed me.

Does anyone have any tips for getting past good akuma players?  Not your typical fireball spamming scrub but someone who uses the air fireball and standard fireball well?  The guy would do a slow fireball and follow it.  Akuma seems to be able to get close enough to do a low/overhead/throw if you block the fireball.  I beat this guy last night as Blanka while he played Zangief.  He switched to shoto fighters and I lost 8 in a row.  Some were close but I missed things at key times (some simple throws and some ultras).  Just enough to lose.  Anyway, I had a lot of trouble with Akuma.  I could get by most of the fireballs with Cammy or duck under them with Blanka but most of the time it just lead to another fireball.

That's a nice read and I think it's pretty accurate.  I'm not fighting game newbie.  Quite the contrary.  I spent the bulk of my gaming time playing one fighting game or another.  I think what is meant by newbie friendly is that the basics are fairly easy to do.  I think the gripes he has with the game are entirely accurate regarding the number of button presses and the tiny window for combos.  Being able to do many of them requires lots of practice.  Missing a throw or move because you missed a button is annoying.  Casual players aren't going to be able to do low short, strong, dragon punch, Focus attack dash cancel, Ultra. Certainly not with such precise timing and dexterous button pressing.
18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Street Fighter IV Impressions on: February 25, 2009, 04:49:02 PM
Playing Ken doesn't make you a scrub. There just seems to be a tendency for scrubs to pick Ken so he gets a bad rap.
19  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Street Fighter IV Impressions on: February 25, 2009, 03:35:20 PM
I have had good luck with quick matches for the most part.  It was tough last night but normally it only takes one or two tries.  I try to be really quick when finding a good connection, though.  I had a tough time in ranked matches last night.  I only won 2 out of probably 10 matches.  My win/loss rate is about 50% in unranked but last night I got matched up with people in the 1500-2500 point range (I started at 0). I played a couple of Zangiefs that seemed to throw constantly.  Most of the matches were pretty close but generally came down to missing a special move at the wrong time.  That and I could not remember Cammy's Ultra.

I like Cammy for Ken scrubs a lot.  Her spinning fist avoids fireballs quite nicely. You can cancel the second hit and throw (I need to get much much better at this) if they block it. She's pretty fast, too.  I also had some success with Chun Li.  Ryu is my best character and I didn't win a match with him. Most were close but just missed a few opportunities and moves. It's frustrating to be able to get things consistently for most of the match but miss it just enough times to lose.

22  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Street Fighter IV Impressions on: February 24, 2009, 02:38:45 PM
That has always been what is so annoying about Street Fighter.  On higher difficulties you almost always have to resort to tricks.  If you try to play like you would against a person you lose quickly. Zangief it was usually just jumping medium kicks.  Jump straight up and hit him with MK or FK as you are coming down.  Over and over.
23  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Street Fighter IV Impressions on: February 23, 2009, 06:19:15 PM
Since you know most people will pick Ken, Ryu, Akuma, or Sagat (Sagat seems least likely) just pick someone who you'd pick if they picked Ryu and were going to do an endless number of fireballs.  That's probably what will happen anyway.
24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PSP] Call of Duty: Roads to Victory Impressions on: March 29, 2007, 04:05:22 AM
I've finished the game on hardened.  Time to trade it for something else.  Unfortunately, the games dissappointments include the ending as well. Overall, it wasn't a bad game but there were some frustrating things about it.  One of the biggest was the mazelike path you are forced to take coupled with just about any object stopping your progress (men, walls, sticks).  It was fun, though, and I'm not sorry I bought it.  Don't think it's worth the full asking price of $40, though.

No bots.  I only had a few minutes to get the game (wife gave me 5 minutes to get in and out) so I didn't check.  Plus, I had read that there would be online play so I didn't even bother.  While I like the game, I might have been happier with SOCOM or SOCOM 2.
27  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: MOH: Vanguard Review IGN on: March 27, 2007, 03:44:19 AM
I agree.  Call of Duty:Roads to Victory comes to mind.  It misses a lot of potential because it doesn't support infrastructure multiplayer.  It could support it (MOH and SOCOM on PSP do) but doesn't.  When you look at that game by itself it doesn't matter if it suports infrastructure or not.  However, the game is not using all of the potential of the PSP and because of that, the game isn't all it could be.
28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PSP] Call of Duty: Roads to Victory Impressions on: March 26, 2007, 02:32:40 PM
I'm getting further into it (been alternating with STALKER) and there are some dissappointments.  First, the AI is not very good.  Your squadmates are virtually worthless.  Germans slip past your squadmates regularly and you get shot from behind or the side while your squadmate stands there shooting forward.  It's like they aren't even there sometimes.  Actually, they aren't even there quite often.  You see them on the map but they simply don't advance all the time.

One of the nice things about COD is that you aren't hampered by small things like walls, windows, etcetera.  You can jump most walls and jump out of windows.  On the PSP you have trouble getting over sticks.  Many times I've been frustrated trying to find the right path to get someplace.  In COD2 I would simply step over the blown out hole in the wall.  In RTV I can't.  I have to find my way around the door and out.  This game is on rails and you aren't getting off of those rails. Dissappointing, to say the least.

Ammo can be tough to come by.  Only certain enemies drop ammo/weapons.  During the last part of the American campaign I had some trouble finishing because I ran out of ammo.  I had to restart the level so I could switch ot a german machine gun to have enough ammo.  It was frustrating to kill someone who had just been shooting at me to find they had no ammo and apparently were using their finger to shoot.

There is a plane sequence where you are a gunner in an airplane.  It was fun and a nice diversion.  It is still an enjoyable game, though.  I would put MOH:Heroes above it.  I'd put Brothers in Arms below it.  It has some of the same flaws (weak ai, rails, poor multiplayer) and lacks the same presentation.
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PSP] Call of Duty: Roads to Victory Impressions on: March 16, 2007, 05:17:55 AM
I've been waiting for this game for a while now.  Read a few things that said it would be out Tuesday but no one got it here until today. Best Buy still doesn't have it. I got it at gamestop and for $3 more I could have gotten a warranty on the umd.  WTF? It's encased in plastic.  How am I going to break/scratch it? I declined the offer of the extra unsurance.

The manual is very sparse and, unless you're new to the series, isn't much more than a listing of controlls and a screen legend. While I love single player COD I was really hoping this would have infrastructure multiplayer.  Unfortunately, it only has ad-hoc and only up to 6 players at that. Not much point if you ask me.  6 player COD in ad-hoc in comparison to Medal of Honor and SOCOM.  Pretty pathetic effort.

The introductory movie is pretty standard COD fare.  The videos and voice are top notch.  You have the introductory letters to read during loads.  The game loads several small bits of the level as you go through it.  There is a load at the beginning which isn't bad and then smaller loads in level.  The main load is probably 30 seconds and the later ones are about 5 seconds.  They aren't (so far) overly frequesnt and are generally just at check points.

Music and sound is fantastic.  It is good through the psp but significantly better played loudly through headphones at high volume.  You can hear so much more and the ambient sounds have more impact.  Just as in the pc version there is a lot going on around you.  Machine gun fire, explosions, planes fly overhead, etcetera.  It's nice and immersive.  That said it feels lacking compared to the pc version.  The ambient sounds overpower the sounds of enemies walking/running (very useful in multiplayer) and they lack the same punch you would get with a dedicated speaker setup (especially a 5.1 system with EAX). The voice acting is good and the sounds of your squadmates is good as well. When you die the sounds is too loud through headphones.

Graphics are good by psp standards.  They aren't up to par with Tekken but are a small notch above MOH and Brothers in Arms.  Plenty of jaggies on static objects (tables, vehicles) but character models look good.  The explosions and gunfire are pretty good, too.  Overall pretty good, though.

Gameplay/control is good by PSP standards.  The default control sceme works well.  Aim assist works very well (maybe too much so).  If you toggle aim down the sight you'll zero in on people pretty good.  You use the analog stick for movement (f,b,sl, sr) and the buttons to turn left/right and aim up/down.  Not ideal but passable and very similar to MOH.  On the default scheme it is difficult to zoom in with a sniper rifle, steady your weapon, and change your aim.  It takes the left shoulder button, right on the dpad, the right buttons, and hitting the right shoulder button.  Pretty convoluted.  Running stationary machine guns gives you no assistive aim, has touchy movement, and you have to be dead on to hit people.  Additionally, you can't spray fire and hit people.  In fact, given all those restrictions, it can ovten be easier to just use a rifle rather than the stationary machine gun.  That's too bad because running them is always lots of fun. Movement is kind of slow as well.  You can't run and you move slowly compared to your squadmates.  It can be difficult finding them once they get too far ahead of you.  When you are trying to get to the next objective the slow movement can get annoying.

Multiplayer is ad-hoc only.  If you know 5 other people with a psp it might be fun.  Otherwise not so much.

Overall it's a fun game.  It can, at times, be frustrating.  I'm glad I bought it but it will be getting traded as soon as i'm finished.  The lack of infrastructure is really a big negative for this game and it really reduces the replay value for me.  It's really too bad, too, because I think the multiplayer would be great if they had something like MOH's 32 player battles.

At a God of War launch event last night God of War director Cory Barlog said "It is its own story that connects to the overall story. God of War, God of War 2, and then if all the stars align God of War 3 will be the telling of a trilogy. This PSP story will be a further fleshing out."

I won't be pissed. I don't see it any different than the DS/DS Lite or the numerous versions of the GBA.  Now if they started making games that only worked on the 1.5 I would be unhappy. They may also fix things like the ability to load custom firmware.

What Sega gets by not coding it is that the die-hard VF fans won't complain about lag.  Less hardcore fans won't be affected by lag because they don't play the game enough to know that Lau's crounching punch takes62 frames to perform and 28 frames to recover.  So they won't care that Pei's kick, which only takes 27 frames to perform is a sure hit.

It's really only the hard-core who know or care about things like that.  Additionally, DOA is just as reliant on precise timing.  It just doen'st have the same ultra-hard-core players as Tekken or VF.

I do agree that fighting games are harder to do than FPS games.  There is a lot more movement going on and the movements are faster.  That said, if DOA and Dalkstalkers (PSP) can do it well why not VF, Tekken, and Street Fighter. I think it has as much (if not more) to do with development time running out as it does with the experience.
38  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So I got a PSP, what do I need (update) on: February 12, 2007, 01:59:28 AM
Dungeion Siege: Throne of Agony is excellent.
If you like fighting games, Tekken: Dark Ressurection is fantastic
Medal of Honor: Heroes is a lot of fun and has 32 player online play.

I have the logitech case and it is a good case  but it's huge. If you don't get the nylone slip case I'd get one of those in addition to the logitech case.

I want online play.  I've been looking at buying a 360 just because DOA offers online play.  Why can DOA have online play but Tekken and VF can't?  Put it in and let ME be the judge of it "ruining the experience."
