41  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Island on: March 28, 2012, 01:21:31 AM
I just finished the game single player with Purna (the guns chick).  I had heard that guns weren't used much in the beginning and that turned out to be dead on.  For the first 3/4 of the game ammo was hard to come by and most of the shooting was done during her Fury attack.  At the end of the game, there was plenty of ammo and I was able to switch to pretty much guns only.  I had heard that the game was difficult to play solo (there is no difficulty choice) and there were times when I died a bunch.  But the penalty for death is small and I persevered.  I think if I had chosen a different character I would have had less deaths in the beginning.  At the end of the game there were a couple of areas where it seemed like I was constantly overwhelmed and didn't have much of a chance solo.  It took multiple deaths to get through.

I thought the game was great fun.  I probably had about 40 hours into it by the end and I had completed many of the side quests.  I really enjoyed it and may actually restart with the swords specialist just to see how that is.  The only thing is, it left me wanting for more single player RPG zombie goodness.  If this game had been made as a single player survival RPG it would have had the potential to be an A+ title.  Imagine if they threw away the multiplayer stuff and made the world persistent and fully explorable from the beginning.  Get rid of the respawning zombies and replace with wandering ones...Put in real choices for you to make that effect the world....remove the soda can health model and instead you scrounge around looking for food, weapons, ammo, batteries..a way off the island.  They could add a day/night cycle.  It would actually be scary and dark at night in the game.  Do you go out at night to fetch something and use up precious batteries...risk the unseen zombies?  Do you wait for daylight where you can be easily seen?  Crafting new weapons and discovering combinations to create crazy new weapons?  You set up a safe house and risk zombie hordes attacking at night?

Holy would be epic.

Sweet, I just picked up the bundle for $5.  Probably will only play this one though.

Modern Combat 3 (universal) is 99 cents today.
45  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: IOS Deals on: February 14, 2012, 03:45:33 PM
Quarrel Deluxe is .99 today, down from 2.99.  It's a combination of scrabble and risk type gameplay.  Well reviewed.
46  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur demo on: February 08, 2012, 11:12:12 PM
I don't know what to think about these reviews.  The demo didn't impress me much but many of the reviewers love it.  Personally I'm having a hard time thinking that an RPG can get 90+ review scores when comments are made by the reviewer such as: "Quests aren’t much more than FedEx or “kill X number of enemies”".  I understand it has other good qualities but for an RPG it seems like quests quality is essential to be considered a great RPG.

Ticket to Ride Pocket Edition is FREE today.  Great game on the Ipad, we play it quite often with the kids.
48  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Warlock: Master of the Arcane on: January 26, 2012, 10:09:42 PM
Looks promising.  The developer didn't reveal too much exciting about the game other than it's inspiration is MoM, Civ games and Majesty.  I'll be watching this one and Fallen Enchantress.

Why is it so hard to just redo MoM and get it right?  I mean how many years has it been and what good fantasy world builders do we have?
49  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur demo on: January 26, 2012, 09:00:18 PM
I went back and played as a mage.  Still didn't grab me.  I'm going to wait on reviews, but for now it's a bargain bin purchase on this one.  Don't get me wrong, it looks very nice, has great production values, good art direction, nice voice acting, seems like a decent plot.  It just didn't make me want to play more.  I suggest everyone try the demo before you buy it... you may love it, but maybe not.
50  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Kingdoms of Amalur demo on: January 26, 2012, 07:56:51 PM
I played the demo up to where is said "you now have 45 minutes to play."  but unfortunately they had already lost my interest and I didn't continue.  I guess I might try it again now that I know the rest of the game is more "open world".  The tower part was a snooze fest for me.  Looked pretty, ran smooth, boring as all get out.  And what's with the archery system?  How do you aim?
51  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: January 24, 2012, 08:30:35 PM
Greed Corp HD is .99 today.  Looks good but haven't tried it yet.
52  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallen Enchantress on: January 23, 2012, 03:36:56 PM
I am trying not to get excited about this one.  I really was disappointed with EWOM and lost interest in it after they tried in vain to fix it.  But from feedback like this, it's hard not to think this one might be great.
53  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DCS: P-51D Mustang on: January 22, 2012, 03:04:05 PM

Great Little War Game is free today.  Also, Flick Soccer.

Puzzle Agent 1 & 2 are 99Cents.
55  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: What kind of gaming mouse are you using now? on: January 19, 2012, 10:24:08 PM
Logitech G700.  Takes a couple of days to get used to the form factor, but then it's terrific.  Wireless works great. Lots of buttons, adjustable DPI.  Smooth scrolling if you want it.  Really nice.
56  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: THQ wipes 2014 slate, getting ready for sale on: January 16, 2012, 04:45:48 AM
[Update] THQ's chief spokesperson has issued a statement denying the rumor that it has canceled its 2014 projects.

"THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO. As part of the ongoing review of our business, we have made decisions to ensure that the company is strategically addressing the most attractive markets. As we have previously announced, we have dramatically reduced our commitment to the kids' boxed games sector which leads to a significantly more focused release schedule moving forward. Our slate for calendar 2012 and beyond is focused on high-quality core games and continues to build our digital platform and business. We are excited for our pipeline of original and high-quality content along with our relationships with some of the best talent in the industry."

I can't imagine that cancelling upcoming projects would help you attract buyers.  Seems like this is just a rumor.  THQ has made some great games....they better stay in business!
57  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Driver : San Francisco on: January 13, 2012, 06:55:03 PM

60  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games Finished 2012 -Console and PC Games on: January 02, 2012, 03:44:29 AM
Ok, here we go.  I have a tremendous backlog thanks to steam and other digital deals.  Last year was pretty good for me.  Played Fallout NV a ton but didn't quite finish. Skyrim arrived and I've been lost in that.  Plan to go back to Fallout NV this year and finish up....

Orcs Must Die & DLC  - fun game! [January]
Civ 5 (if it can ever be finished - numerous playthroughs of this)
Swords & Soldiers HD - casual game, pretty fun
Dead Island Single Player (fun game, if they had made it as a single player RPG it had potential to be epic)
Homefront -very short but fun
Dawn of Discovery Campaign (really fun but not the most intuitive to figure out)
Rage (pretty fun, B)
Skyrim (main campaign 100+ hours)
Borderlands 1 (went back and finished to prep for 2)
Orcs Must Die 2 & DLC
Diablo 3
Crusader Kings II (can never really finish but played through multiple dynasties)

Needs to finish Up:
Fallout NV
Deus Ex
Skyrim (finished main quest, played about 100 hours so far)
Jagged Alliance BIA
Crusader Kings 2

Put aside, not going back:
Dungeon Defenders (after Orcs must die, this was a let down)

Apple IOS games:
Quarrel Deluxe - endless daily fun here, can be challenging
Kingdom Rush (excellent game...waiting for sequel)
Space Miner (great game)
Tiny Tower (done with this)
Dragonvale (done with this)
10000000 - addicting
Puzzle Craft - ok
61  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: GT Community: Pick your favorite PC game of 2011 on: December 26, 2011, 02:57:57 PM
Skyrim!  I think I could play this for the next year.

Terraria was a real surprise...but doesn't have the staying power that Skyrim has.  For what it is, I think Terraria is excellent.
62  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: IPad "builder" game for 5.5 year old on: December 23, 2011, 07:00:54 PM
Has anyone tried Tiny Tower?  I'm thinking that or Dragonvale.

Looking into the minecraft, eden, the montessori ones too.
63  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: IPad "builder" game for 5.5 year old on: December 22, 2011, 02:22:33 AM

Ok, I bought Casey's Contraptions and he was only able to do the first 6 levels by himself.  This will have to be one we do sitting down together.  So it's good, but he can't do it alone.

I'll look into minecraft.  Thanks for that rec.  Dragonvale looked good to me also in Itunes store, looks more interesting than farm story.  Does it have any educational benefit?  Does it make you solve puzzles or just a "time waster" type thing?  I kind of want something educational/make him problem solve and think.  Not just a time waster for him.  The idea is that he will sit on the couch and do it in the afternoon while I do p90x for an hour.  I also finally figured out how to turn off In App Purchases so he can't make a mistake and buy anything on the Ipad.  So that is good.  Makes these freemium games more bearable.

As an aside, I got Ticket to Ride on the Ipad and it's a really fun family game that we are enjoying (even the 4 yr old can play)!
64  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / IPad "builder" game for 5.5 year old on: December 21, 2011, 04:18:12 PM
My son wants a builder type game on Ipad where he can build farm, or toy shop, or something like that.  He was playing farm story and likes it, BUT it is a freemium game and they ask for real money every 10 seconds in the game and we also don't want him connected to any social media.  Are there any suitable (non-violent, etc..) games for a 5 yr old where he can build, create, manage? (we have Ipad2)

I was looking at Casey's Contraptions, which looks good but is not a builder.

The ones I've found so that might be ok are:
Roads of Rome
Jack of all Tribes

I already have settlers HD and Sim City Deluxe but I think they may be too advanced for him?

I don't mind paying for an app as long as it doesn't ask him for money to buy more in game.
65  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is Anyone Else Here Unable to Enjoy the Assassin's Creed Games? on: December 15, 2011, 08:23:42 PM
I had the first one on PC and didn't last 30 minutes (exaggeration for effect) with it.  It seemed lame to me, albeit with nice production and graphics.  The 2nd one I got on PS3 and played to the end, which for me is really saying something.  I thought it was great.  I have Brotherhood PS3 in my backlog now and could see getting Revelations when it drops below $15 which is my new buy price.
66  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / Re: iPhone/iTouch app and game thread on: December 15, 2011, 08:20:47 PM
Fara is an action RPG that I had my eye's free right now.  Looks good.

Spy Mouse for Iphone is free right now.  Supposed to be good.  haven't tried it yet.
68  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Biggest surprise hit/disapointment of the year 2011 on: December 13, 2011, 02:45:28 PM
1.  Terraria.... took me by total surprise.  Got it for $2.50 on the steam sale and played it for 40 hours pretty much non-stop.
2.  Skyrim....   Leaps and bounds better than Oblivion.  A pleasant surprise.
3.  Bulletstorm... Much more fun than I imagined.  Well done.
69  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DS games for a 3 1/2 year old on: October 14, 2011, 02:41:59 PM
The first Kirby game on the DS game is really great and fun - even for adults.  Kirby: Canvas Curse.  Should be really cheap now if you can find it.  Now that I think about it, it may actually be hard to find.  I'm sure there are tons of DS games good for kids.  My Spanish Coach!  Mario Kart DS

That's a shame. I loved Red Faction Guerrilla.
71  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Just reformatted the wrong drive... recovery options? on: March 12, 2011, 03:41:02 PM
A similiar thing happened to me.  I took it to geeksquad and they estimated as much as $1000 to recover the data, up to 4 weeks to do it and didn't guarantee anything.  Instead I used a program from getdata called recovermyfiles and over a two day period I got 98% of it back.  The program cost about $80 but it was worth it.

I'm sure I finished some TRS-80 Model III games, but I can't recall them right now (getting old) but the one that stands out was the Apple II game, Captain Goodnight....played through that one a few times at least and also Pirates!
78  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Printer/scanner? on: December 26, 2010, 10:30:19 PM
I have a canon PIXMA MP560 and it works very well.  Scanning is very easy and the scans look great.  The ink is a bit pricey even though you have separate ink tanks you will use all of them up fairly quick.  Replacing all the tanks costs about $60 (almost as much as buying a new printer).  You can save some ink by using grayscale and Fast printing quality on regular stuff.

Homard, do you still have one left on the Just Cause deal?  If yes, sign me up.  I tried to send you a PM on steam but "Elbino\Homard" did not work on the friend add page.
