1  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Recommend good games/data HDD or SSHD on: November 06, 2016, 04:32:33 PM
What is a good HDD lately?  I have my OS on an SSD and my games and data on an old school HDD that is about 5 years old now.  It is getting full (only 1 TB) and I fear it will fail in the near future.  I'm ready to replace it with a new 2 TB HDD but have no idea what is good these days.

some I've been looking at...........
WD Black - $125
Seagate 2.5" barracuda 128 mb cache $100
HGST - I hear is good....
Toshiba - models DT01ACA200 and HDKPC09 I've heard good things about
Seagate firecuda SSHD - $105

The new seagate Firecuda SSHD seems pretty cool....faster than HDD and since I will store games on it....I like the idea of that.

Any recommendations?  I'm out of touch with the HDD market lately.

3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Typing program for 10 yr old....not Typing of the Dead on: February 13, 2016, 04:05:30 PM
Hi GTers....

My 10 year old is getting into coding and I'd like him to learn to type vice henpick...   I'm looking for an appropriate typing program for him.  I understand that typing of the dead is very popular, but I've watched some videos of it and it really isn't appropriate for a 10 yr old (swearing and lots of gore, violence).  Any recommendations?

I've been watching some videos on youtube....not sure if my kids would like it.

Wow, thanks for the great info.  I guess PC is the way to go for us.

That being said, my youngest son has the weakest computer.  Here are the specs.  Do you think the single thread CPU will matter?

CPU: Intel Pentium K G3258 OC to 4.4GHz (i've seen some youtube video with this cpu running good)
GPU: GTX 275 (can this handle the game?)
Monitor res:  1680x1050 so that will help, right?

If he needs a new video card, I would either give him my GTX 770 and get a 970 for myself (which doesn't seem like much of an upgrade) or just get him at GTX 750 Ti 2gb for ~ $130... any suggestions?
6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Buying advice for Kids on: December 09, 2015, 05:00:24 AM
I have 2 boys, age 7 & 9, that are asking for this game for christmas.  We are looking for something that we can all play together.  My boys have "star wars fever" right now with the movie days from release.  I trust you guys and need some guidance:

- Is this game age appropriate?  I realize the CHAT is where the worst stuff will come from, but I trust it can be disabled
- It doesn't seem like there is much CO-OP hard is it to play together???
- Console or PC for best coop experience?  We only have PS3 and WiU, so we would have to buy a PS4.  On the other hand, my youngest sons PC would probably need a new video card to be able to play it, so a GTX 970 is ~$300 anyway.

7  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mad Max - open world game from Avalanche on: September 12, 2015, 08:24:57 PM
I'm playing it on PC for about 20 hours now.  I've only cleared about 1/4 of the map.  It's a really fun action game set in Mad Max type world.  The combat is pretty easy.  The most fun parts are the car driving and battles.  I recommend it for sure if you watch a video or two on youtube and think you would be interested.  Silky smooth, no bugs yet.

Im up to 90 dwellers and have unlocked all but one room.  It has great presentation and is fun for a little while, but once you figure out how to grow your vault without running out of a resource, there doesn't seem to be any reason to continue.  I can't find a reason to continue.

This app has been broken for me for about the last 3 weeks.  When i open the app, it immediately goes to minimized and it won't open.  It does appear in my list of open apps though.  Too bad.

I agree 100% about the speed up/slow down on riff repeater.  It's such a drag to have to exit each time and restart riff repeater.  I think rocksmith is great overall.  It's really a fun way to learn guitar.  I'm not saying it's the only thing you need, but it has kept me interested and I have supplemented it with  My only other complaint is in some of the takes a long time to restart each mission AND I wish you could control the progression/speed a little more.  It goes from easy to insane in such a short amount of time....and then you have to wait through the restart sequence.  Some wasted time there.

12  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Gamecube games ? on: November 16, 2013, 05:30:44 PM
My boys are getting old enough to play video games so I have dug out the old gamecube recently.  They love Mario Kart Double Dash and I would like to get some other Mario or Coop games for them.  I can't find the games anywhere though and on amazon or ebay they are really outrageous.  The local gamestop doesn't have any either.  Do you guys have any ideas or any old games you don't want anymore?

I guess I'm looking for Mario Bros type games, Pikmin 2, Zelda etc... the classics for gamecube.

If your Mom uses an Iphone or more than one computer, I highly recommend Roboform.  It syncs all your data across platforms so I am never without my passwords.  In addition, it autofills your logins, generates passwords, etc... Can't recommend it enough.  There is a demo and the first year is only $9.99.  I love it.
19  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games finished in 2013 ALL GAMING PLATFORMS (including Mobile Games) on: December 30, 2012, 05:28:42 AM

Hotline Miami (PC Jan 3) - fun game, great soundtrack, lots of deaths (mostly mine)
BF3 campaign (PC Jan 18) - some ok firefights, played on hard and autosaves sucked
Spec Ops The Line (PC Feb 3) - meh, ok if you get it cheap, spare me the idiotic morality lesson
Crusader Kings II - lots and lots of play time.
Civ V - hundreds of hours here
Hitman Absolution (PC May) - really good, but I've decided I'm not so much into sneaking games anymore. I snuck around till I got noticed and then played FPS Shooter
Far Cry 3 (Aug) - great game, story got pretty whack.  Wish the exploration was better and islands felt more alive.
Sniper Elite V2 (PC) - action-y sniping.  Fun but not perfect.  Generous with the checkpoints  thumbsup
Fairway Solitaire (IOS)-
swordigo (IOS)
Tomb Raider 2013 PC - really good game, combat more fun that I expected, great production values and action
How to Survive (PC) - Solid B.  I enjoyed it.  With more depth and polish could have been an big hit.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - nice concept, artwork, story.  Fun control ideas.
Driftmoon RPG (PC) - nice indie game from Husband/Wife team.  Lots of story, not combat oriented at all.
bioshock infinite (PC) - good game, maybe not quite as good as hyped.  Pure action FPS unlike First game.
Dead Island Riptide (PC) - like the first one, no big changes.  Fun but dragged a bit at the end.
State of Decay (PC) - great game!
Rocksmith 2014 - have played about 50 hours in the last three weeks of december since I got it.  Really fun.

In Progress
always playing minecraft, terraria and swordigo (IOS) with the kids
Walking Dead PS3/ipad
Anno 2070 PC (almost done)
Van Helsing Adventures of

Played and put aside
Chivalry - Jan blah
Rock of Ages - Sep   boring
Little Inferno - amusing for an hour then seemed kind of pointless

Don't Starve - more work than fun

Really Sony?  Talk about milking the cow.  I mean slimmer is nice and all, but to offer it at full price with no added features?  I guess if I had upgraded to a slimmer house recently, I might be convinced to buy this slimmer PS3.

I'd also note this is a less ambitious type of project... it's another game in the vein they made like 5 of already... so a lower risk factor.

I agree and I think you and TiLT make good points.  The support from gamers thus far is really astounding.  Hopefully publishers will see that they don't always know best and this and other fan funded projects can bring about a gaming renaissance.

$1,455,482 with 29 days to go.  Wow.

You only need to know a bit about what goes on in the business and who these people are. Punishing them for Stardock's mistakes is blatant ignorance, in my opinion, and I don't say that to offend.

Sure sounds like a personal attack to me.  I don't know why you choose to go there, but I won't.

All I'm saying is that I choose to purchase a game after release.  Much like I make most other purchases in life.  That way you know what you are getting.  Makes sense to me.

I'm not punishing anyone or trying to thwart any game designers efforts.  I've been playing computer games for more than 35 years and have seen all kinds of things in the gaming/computer/publishing industry.  I don't think I am being ignorant in my choice not to pre-pay for an unmade game.  Just my 2 cents.

Obsidian is a company with numerous well-known and respected developers and designers who've been behind some of gaming's most cherished franchises and who have a track record of producing outstanding games in record time, despite bugs. They've been around for ages and are much loved, for good reason.

Ok, first off, Gal Civ 1 & 2 were pretty successful games and they are still played today by lots of people.

Second, if Obisidian is so terrifically wonderful, it seems odd that they need to raise $1 million upfront to go forward with this.  They are saying 2014 release...that's a long way in advance.

Quote from: TiLT on September 15, 2012, 06:30:35 PM

This isn't a Stardock game. Your experiences with Elemental are irrelevant.

Irrelevant?  Pay money up-front for a game to be released far in the future from a group of people who made previously successful titles.  Hmm, seems like the same situation to me.
All I'm saying is that too many games with lots of hype and big promises end up falling short.  I'll gladly pay $50 for a well reviewed and good game, but don't really want to pay $20 for the "promise" of a good game. That's just me....but like I said, I have yet to get $50 worth of playtime from Elemental or it's sequel and I paid my money YEARS ago.
30  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Obsidian Countdown on: September 15, 2012, 05:04:51 PM
As great as this looks and sounds, I really learned my lesson with Elemental.  I paid for it some 18 months before release...waited months for the supposed patches to make it playable (but not fun or worth my pre-order) and now the promised "free" sequel has the potential to be vaporware.  I think I will just wait for release and read some reviews..maybe play the demo then hop on the bandwagon.

After doing some research, it looks like I am going to try the WD My Book Live in 2 tb or 3tb flavor. Does anyone here have any experiences with this drive? Is there something else I should consider?
32  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / recommend wireless backup/nas solution on: July 23, 2012, 10:52:35 PM
I need to upgrade to a larger external drive (current one is only 640gb). I would like it to be USB 3.0 and 2tb or larger in size because I would like to backup images of my 1tb data drive and 256gb C: drive onto it.

Are there any good network type devices out now that could also serve as a server for movies and Itunes to my PS3, ipads, laptop and Iphone as well?

Any advice on either of these?

I also got in on the $10 deal for this and I played the first mission.  I have to say that it left a much better impression than the demo and was pretty fun.  Looks like the patching was good.  (I'm playing with the LOS turned on so I can't see enemies unless my mercs have's nice).

Have you played Just Cause 2?  It's not an exclusive but it sure is good!  I really enjoyed Assasins Creed 2, Demons Souls and have heard great things about Dragons Dogma.

I second the recommendation for playstation plus.  $49.99 buys you a year, plus gobs of free and top notch games right the promise of more free and discounted games in the future.

How does the PSN subscription work?  Is it $60 for a year?  Do you get to keep the games if you don't renew?

I have a PS3, but never did the subscription because I didn't know anything about it.
