Yep, it only affects the boxed version.  The reason being was that stores were seriously undercutting the price of the boxed versions of digitally distributed games, both in a way of undercutting online distribution, and simple because they could use these games as loss leaders to draw in people to buy other things.

Also, episode 2 was slated to sell around $20-$30 right?  For most store execs, when they see that price point on a game, they immediately think bargain bin trash and they'll treat it as such unless the press is huge.

One good thing to note about this is that they're giving you three seperate CD/Steam keys.  One for HL2, one for Episode 1, and One for episode 2.  Thus, even though you are forced to buy all three, you can at least give away or sell the ones you don't want.  Not much consolation, but there's a lot of companies that wouldn't have done the same.

I would like to see it in print where they have said that this won't affect the Steam release.  I have a feeling that they won't be able to release a different version through Steam because it would risk seriously cutting into the retail product sales.

And the Black Box edition was previously targetted at $40 (with the full Orange at $60), which is pretty standard for many PC games these days.

My car is little, cheap and not sexy at all.  But I usually get around 40-42 mpg, so that makes up for it.  smile
9923  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Half-Life it again! (because you have to) on: May 20, 2007, 06:19:31 AM
Sure, if you didn't buy the last two products that's great for you to be able to get it all in one package, and it was going to be an option all along.  For those of us who have already paid full price for two of these things in the past it would be nice to be able to just buy the new stuff.  Especially with something like Half-Life 2, where they already sold a bajillion copies of the original game and episode one.

And unbreakable, this has nothing to do with Vavle's digital distribution methods.  In fact, I'd argue that buying games from Steam is almost always costlier than a retail product, with the added problems of mandatory online authentication.

Worthplaying has a preview up of Carcassonne with a number of screenshots.  Looks like it is still set for release sometime in June and will include one expansion set and you get the privilege of paying for two more right away.
9925  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Good news for Manhunt 2 (wii) on: May 20, 2007, 02:09:05 AM
I'm glad they're taking the time to make it look and play great, but it's not a game I'm really interested in.  Maybe if it gets rave reviews and I can see some appeal other than the horror/gore thing.
9926  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half-Life it again! (because you have to) on: May 20, 2007, 12:25:20 AM
In a wonderful show of support to all of us that already bought Half-Life 2 and Episode One, Valve has annouced a big "Up yours" by cancelling the Black Box version and only selling the more expensive Orange Box package that includes those two games.  I saw this over at the site that shall not be named

By the way, EA is their publisher these days.  Not a big surprise.

There's a moment during the second YouTube video where the presenter makes a big deal about how the Colossus' ability to step up and down a steep cliff makes StarCraft II "look more dynamic." (2:40) It's a nice effect, but compared to a game like Company of Heroes where things actually *are* dynamic -- artillery strikes leave craters where infantry can take cover, crumpled bodies are sent flying by grenade explosions, and destroyed tanks become roadway obstacles -- it's hard to get very excited about Blizzards "Eye Kay" technology.
-Autistic Angel

The "eye kay" technology he spoke of is an inverse kinematics system they use to dynamically animate the colossus on uneven terrain.  It has nothing to do with gameplay dynamics like you are talking about.

Well, it certainly looks a LOT like StarCraft.  I will be interested to see the gameplay video when it releases on Sunday, even though I no longer really play RTS games.

Haha, my parents had one of these (in fact, still do) and it was the first car I got to drive when I got my license and that is a very accurate description of it's speed and acceleration.

Aegis Wing is a passable sidescrolling space shooter, but man sometimes it's hard to tell which parts of the environments will destroy you and which ones won't.

From my experience (2 levels and change), none of the environment can kill you. Only the moving baddies, their bullets, and the giant ass mines of doom.

Well I guess what I meant is that sometimes it appears that the backgrounds are in the foreground and are capable of being flown into. Maybe it's the Zaxxon in me coming back..

It's a little thing called three-dee.  Those objects are closer to the camera and fly "over" your ship.  Tongue

I haven't tried out multiplayer but I'd be interested to see what happens when you join together with the X button.  I'm not sure who would control moving or shooting when you do that.

Eh, I played a match of the weird king whatever and then went back to playing Crackdown.  I might be interested in the single player of Halo 3 but I just don't think I can play that type of multiplayer anymore.  Not that I was ever big into Halo 2, either.

The little four wheeler wasn't as fun to drive as I was hoping.  The weapons seemed pretty satisfying.

The graphics are a good step up from Halo 2, obviously, but they aren't mind blowing.

9936  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: VC Shooter Shootout on: May 17, 2007, 03:34:43 AM
Well, if you're looking for a shooter you can just grab Aegis Wing for free on XBLA.  And if you're looking for Bomberman action, you can always wait for the updated one that's coming to....XBLA.

This is all assuming you have an XBox 360, of course.  slywink

Yeah, I don't think you ever collide with the environment.

I am sort of disappointed that it doesn't appear that your main weapon ever gets upgraded, but at least the secondary ones are plentiful so I don't feel like I have to save them forever and ever like i normally do in these sorts of games.

We're happy to announce that starting immediately, a new title update for Crackdown is available on Xbox Live that will enable downloading of the Halo 3 Beta. Also, as a consolation for lost time and inconvenience, we are extending the Halo 3 Beta end date to Sunday, 6/10, at 11:59 PM PDT.

Enjoy the extra day betaing multiplayer.

Extra 3 days, actually.

When we get together, my family really enjoys playing the Sequence board game.  It's fairly simple to get a grasp on but then allows for strategies, and it's playable for 2 to 12 people.

It doesn't have anything to do with comic books or anything, though.

By the way, I read something today that said the DLC coming out for Crackdown would include a town reset option so you can repopulate the world.

Geez, there's a thought. And something that should've been included with the game when it launched.

As far as I know you can.  There's an option when you start to turn crime back on that will put gang members back in.  I thought the DLC put all the leaders back.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, that first reset option was always there once you beat the game, but it was not obvious to many people that it became available.  I think if I hadn't read about it I probably wouldn't have known to look for it.

Hooray for free games!  So far I have to say that it isn't too bad.  At least it isn't a one-hit kill system, which always frustrated me.  I could really use a faster and more spread out weapon, though.  Hopefully the upgrade system is decent.

The new solitaire XBLA game is out now, too, and of course has a demo available.

At least they are coming out a few weeks before the GTA4 juggernaut.  Probably a good thing to drive some system sales early and then sell more gift games as the other big releases hit.

This is going to be one expensive holiday season, I think.

I'd have to say Crackdown and Earth Defense Force 2017 for the 360, and since I didn't finish Saint's Row until January I will add that one there, too.

For the PC I think the only game I bought was FlatOut 2, but it was easily a favorite.  I also put several hours into the freebie Desktop Tower Defense, which is unusual for me.

The Blizzard person who made that decision.  They'll have trouble though with my boot on their neck.

The only good news is that they didn't list the first WoW expansion on that list, so that pretty much throws out the chance of it being a second addon.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.  No expansions were listed on there at all, so it's likely a new game/sequel.

Well, there is this thing supposedly coming out in June:

And I've seen some other shots of what were likely prototype gun attachments.
