9921  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: ATB MIA? Weekend Recap 5/Feb/2007 on: February 06, 2007, 02:12:42 AM
I finally played Sam & Max: Episode 2 and that has me excited for the third one which is just coming out now.

I also played a number of hours in Sly Cooper and the Theivious Raccoonus, which is great fun.

On the PC I checked out the demos for Infernal and Silverfall.  Infernal is a third person shooter where your character has some special powers.  It ran really fast and looked surprisingly good and could be really fun once you get to the higher level powers.  Silverfall could be a decent budget pickup, also.

I have already purchased the full season of Sam & Max, so whenever Episode 3 is available for download I will grab that fella.  Nothing else interests me this week.

They are still in a pretty limited beta right now, I think.  Even those of us who got into the stress test weekend weren't allowed to continue.  They said they will be adding more players here in February and there will probably be another phase or two before it is released in April.

In other news, they have a tiny new dwarf video over at the Europe site.  What's goofy is that none of those videos have made it onto the offical US site yet, even the ones released last year.

hmm...should be interesting to see how it compares to the next Burnout game...

Yeah, it's unfortunate that Burnout 5 is currently aimed at an early summer release also.  I'm curious to see where this next Burnout goes, though, since they are supposed to be making it an open city environment and that doesn't seem like a direction I want to see for that game.  Or it might be super awesome and the best idea ever.

The thing I love about the FlatOut game (besides stuff like demolition derbies smile) is that they also have older, heavier cars and trucks and off-road dirt tracks.  I wish they would not go too far into the tuner cars on city streets direction, but I can see their need to broaden the appeal to that crowd.
9927  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Crackdown Demo Impressions on: February 03, 2007, 11:08:01 PM
Ok, I am late with impressions on this one but I finally got it to download after bypassing my router...even though I have the correct ports opened up and haven't had other problems with downloads or Live.

Anyway, after playing one full session of the demo I have to say that I love the look and feel of this one.  I wasn't too sure how the graphics would appeal to me even after seeing videos, but now I really dig the style.  The huge view distance is really coo, too.

The targetting system works well and lock-on is nice.  Unfortunately I always try to use the right analog stick to change targets and that just makes me shoot the dude's arm, but I'm sure I will get used to it.  I would like to see some more variety in the melee department.  I only developed strength up to 2 stars, but all I ever saw was the same spin-kick move over and over.

I love having the cops on my side, especially when I start shooting back at the gang memebers!

The first time I jumped in one of the muscle cars, hit the gas and saw the weight transfer and heard the throaty roar I got a huge grin on my face.  And it drives just like a severely overpowered, heavy older car.  I do hope that increasing driving skill helps you make tighter turns, because right off the bat you have to always hit the brake or e-brake to do that in all the cars I drove.

All in all I think this will be a day one purchase for me.  Woohoo!  Cheers to something living up to expectations.

9929  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage [360] on: February 03, 2007, 09:08:05 PM
As was rumored a few months ago, Bugbear is working on an all-new version of FlatOut for the 360 due out this June (or so).  I am a pretty big fan of the previous games (and I know a couple other people around here were, too) so this is good news for me.  Here are some of the details on what they are cranking up for this release:

The game will be able to handle 12 cars on screen (up from eight in FlatOut 2), over 8,000 dynamic objects per track (compared to 5,000 in FlatOut 2), and 20,000 polygons per car (FlatOut 2 cars used 7,500 polygons). Ultimate Carnage will include five new single-player modes, and two new multiplayer modes will be available over Xbox Live. Widescreen and 720p support are also included.

So far it is only being announced for the 360, but considering the previous games were multiplatform (PC, XBox and PS2) I think it might be safe to assume that this one will be, too.  At least at some point.

Not to mention that there are people with lowly 128 or 256 MB video cards that would appreciate being able to play the game, too.  I know when this game came out I certainly wasn't hearing too many people saying that the game was not taxing their systems.

Now that the latest firmware patch has fixed the problems the PS3 was having rendering PS2 games, I'm starting to consider purchasing one more closely.  Rogue Galaxy is a fantastic looking PS2 game, but I can't help but think of how much nicer it would look upscaled to 1080i.  To say nothing of God of War II....

I may be mistaken, but I don't think the PS3 will upscale PS2 games to a resolution that was not supported when it was played on the PS2, so if you coudln't play Rogue Galaxy at 1080i on your PS2 you won't be able to on the PS3 either.

And I also do not see this price drop in the near future.  I would expect towards the end of their next fiscal year as the earliest, and that would be more than a year from now.
9937  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Postal: The Trailer on: February 01, 2007, 03:47:28 PM
Honestly, I'd rather not have a movie based on a game than to have a shitty one that nobody likes and brings down the name of the franchise.

As for Dungeon Siege, I don't really care who directed it, as soon as I saw the preview all I could think was "Wow, that looks like crap.  A terrible rip off of the LOTR movies that will probably be only as good as Dungeons & Dragons" (which is another movie that should never have been made).
9938  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Saints Row to the PS3 on: February 01, 2007, 03:34:46 PM
I enjoyed Saints Row way more than I first imagined and I think it could find a good home on the PS3 provided it arrives well before GTA 4.
9939  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bullet Witch (X360) on: February 01, 2007, 03:32:50 PM
I think it could be a decent action game, especially with her special powers that do major destruction, but I don't think it will start any major fires with people.  My one beef is that from all the screenshots and movies I've seen it always looks to have a real washed-out color palette, which detracts from it in my opinion.

I've generally been a fan of Uwe's movies, but assuming that trailer is real (yeah it was that bad) then this would be the first Boll movie that I'm not interested in.
Definitely looking forward to the Dungeon Siege movie (which has been done for a while now) though.

Oh, I sure hope you have low expectations for your movies.  What little I've seen of Dungeon Siege looked quite bad.

Here's my top 10.  Even though I had never heard of Secular Humanism I guess it sounds like it lines up with most of my beliefs.  I have no idea how Quaker, Protestant or anything else can come above Nontheist, but whatever.

1.  Secular Humanism (100%)
2.  Unitarian Universalism (99%)
3.  Liberal Quakers (87%)
4.  Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (82%)
5.  Nontheist (72%)
6.  Theravada Buddhism (69%)
7.  Neo-Pagan (66%)
8.  Bahá'í Faith (52%)
9.  New Age (51%)
10.  Taoism (47%)
Mine worked fine from IE, but I had to hit the final Submit button twice before it would give my results.

I've been listening to The Black Keys lately too.  Good stuff.

I really like The Black Keys, also, but I think I am liking each new album a little less than the last.  They are going from a really raw sound to leaning towards a more refined blues that I'm not as big a fan of.

Seriously, I kind of enjoyed those as brainless off-road games back then.  Or the demos, at least.  Now that you have titles like MX vs ATV Unleashed that have monster trucks and so much more it just makes them seem that much more anitquated.

9948  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Ten New Titles Approach the Xbox Live Arcade Horizon on: January 31, 2007, 02:09:25 AM
My only problem is that of these 10 games that we are expected to be excited about, and likely won't see for months, only one of them is a new title: Battle of the Bugs.  I'm sure I will get Worms and maybe Alien Hominid if it itsn't obscenely priced, but if this is the big guns they are bringing out then it seems weak to me.

As for Nintendo's releases every week, it is impressive that they can keep that rate up, but those games are straight emulations (first-party for the most part) and they do not have any added functionality (multiplayer, Live Awareness, etc) nor do they feature enhanced graphics or sound.

Somewhat related, no "clean installs" for the Upgrade Editions either (vista upgrades needs to go down over an existing qualifying (XP or 2000) install, not just do qualifying media check like as before).  This one is the particular bother for me, I like clean installs.

Apparently this is not true.  From this thread

This is exactly right.  If you start an upgrade from a running copy of Windows 2000 or later, you'll have a couple of options.  You'll be able to do an in-place upgrade maintaining your apps/settings, do a clean install while wiping the partition, or do a clean install to a new partition.

The way the upgrade and retail SKUs differ is if you boot setup from the DVD - in the upgrade SKU, it'll check for a qualifying version of Windows before proceeding.  In the retail version, it doesn't care.  However, if you boot setup from the DVD, you can't do an in-place upgrade (in either case).

If there were an MMO coming out in the next few months, one of the features that would be pretty cool would be Accomplishments that gave you new titles (useless, but kinda neat) and unlocked traits and such depending on what you do.  It's almost like the MMO equivalent of Achievements, except with a purpose.  You know, hypothetically.  slywink
