9921  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Lumines = $23.75 and not $15? on: August 25, 2006, 01:39:37 AM
I am not a fan of this practice of holding certain content back (especially content that allows you to actually "complete" the game) and then releasing it later for extra transactions.

As an aside, if you buy your Marketplace points at Best Buy using one of the Gamer Gift Card $5 off coupons you can get them for $1 per 100 points.  A better deal and makes things much easier for the head math.   icon_wink

1600 points = ($19.99 - $5) * 1.08 = $16.19

Preemptive explanation of Gamer Gift Cards - These are just a gift card that you buy and put money on like any other, but they come with a coupon for $5 off a game/accessory of $19.99 or more.  Just get the card and put a few dollars on it in one transaction, and then use the card and coupon to purchase your game/accessory.  Just be sure in that second transaction they scan the coupon before the gift card or the register jockey will get confused and then have to get the manager over there to void it and start over.

I enjoyed Riddick a lot.  I played the Developer's Cut version on the PC and ended up playing it through a second time (a very rare thing for me) to listen to all the developer commentary.  A total blast.  One of the best games I've bought for less than $20.

Having said that, I am obviously interested in this one.  I'm not familiar with the comic story, but from what I've read it should allow for some pretty crazy and gruesome gameplay.

Downloading this one on my 360 right now.  The last trailer they released was mediocre at best, but I've read some things and seen other movies which make it seem like it could be a good kind of super-Bond doing GTA tyep game.  Crossing my fingers that it's good.

Not a thing. I'm a huge football fan, but the Madden series is the biggest ripoff of all time. It's essentially a roster update every year.

And (not surprisingly) the game is buggy. Again. At least the 360 version is.

And yet they will all buy it again next year.   Roll Eyes
9931  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Random Assorted 360 Questions on: August 23, 2006, 01:55:28 AM
I have my 360 hooked up to a 20" monitor and I sit in my recliner which I would estimate is about 7 feet back from head to screen.  If there is a game with a lot of smaller text to read I might scoot forward a foot or so.  But I also need new glasses, so that could be part of the problem.   icon_wink
9932  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Why the EA hatred? on: August 22, 2006, 03:01:35 PM
For all the reasons above (easpouse, buying the NFL license to avoid competition from better products) and more.

Over the years they have also bought a number of very good development houses and then proceeded to gut and destroy them (Origin, Bullfrog, et al).

Also, their whole mindset is based around the yearly sports releases, even for non-sports titles.  They continue to release new Battlefield games and expansions and yet never properly fix the old versions before dumping a new one on the market (with it's own problems).  In general, they release a lot of games that are small iterations on previous releases without fixing some of the most glaring problems.

Part of their contract with Microsoft also allows them to control what XBox Live games get support, forcing people to buy the newer versions if they want to continue to play multiplayer games.  It has also been noted that compared to other XBox Live games the EA ones tend to have spotty lag problems.

And despite all this shit there are still people who go out every year and put money in their pocket for half-baked games.

9934  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Savage 2: Whos stoked? on: August 22, 2006, 01:59:05 AM
I'm pretty psyched for Savage 2.  I'm not as big a fan of some of the character designs as I was in the first one, but hopefully the gameplay is there and it kicks all sorts of ass.  I also hope they have done something to help the problem of the commander having so much influence in the direction a map goes.  In the first one if you didn't have a good commander in the seat right away it was an uphill struggle with very little hope of success.

Project Offset doesn't really have enough information for me to form an opinion about yet.  I'll give it another look when they start releasing in-game shots and movies.

Jiminy jillickers ... to change the subject to something more pleasant: 5/5 for Dead Rising, Tom?   icon_wink  I understand you use the rating to convey "the reviewer's enthusiasm for a game", but shouldn't that enthusiasm be tempered with the pitfalls that are also present in a game?  Considering you are writing your reviews for gamers, doesn't the fact that many people have serious problems with certain aspects of the game (saves, dumb AI, enless escorts, controls, timed, forced restarts, etc) lead you to think that perhaps you were a bit over enthusiastic?  If not, can you explain why?  (that's not an attack, I would honestly like to know your feelings on the subject)

I agree with you, wonderpug.  I think this style of overly detailed and jaggy edges looks more like something from Armored Core than Transformers.  I saw that CG test footage of the old-school Optimus Prime and it looked both realistic/believeable as well as true to the Transformers canon.

9944  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] Not yet in production? on: August 19, 2006, 11:44:31 PM
The thing that the Wii has going for it is that it is largely based on technology that they have been mass-producing for five years, although at higher clock speeds.  This should allow them to create the chipsets cheaply, in large quantities with fairly high yields, unlike new technology like those in the 360 and PS3.  Nintendo plays their cards notoriously close to their chest, but my guess is that they will be shipping numbers that put the 360 and PS3 launches to shame.  It probably still won't be enough for the worldwide holiday demand, but a little extra demand is always good for business.

Midway just shipped Rise & Fall with Starforce protection.  Considering they are also publishing Lord of the Rings Online as well as Unreal Tournament 2007 that is probably not good news.

There are also numerous games shipped in Europe/Asia that still include Starforce, although usually the publishers for the North American version usually changes to a different copy protection scheme.  Ubisoft and JoWood dropped it for their NA releases, but still use it elsewhere.  Codemasters still uses it everywhere as far as I know.

EDIT: I speelll goood!

I'd say E-Bay is iffy.  Chances are good you'll end up making less money than a 360 auction since the pricepoint is already high to start off with.

But the console itself will be unavailable on store shelves for who knows how long. And the rabid PS3 fans are well...rabid. They'll get their cosole at any cost. No matter how stupidly priced it is.

Hey, you sound like a Sony quotebot...are you their new PR rep?   icon_wink

One question that this raises with me, though, is what they mean by "in production".  I know they had been talking about the low yield of CPUs with the adequate number of cores intact, so I'm guessing what they're talking about here is final assembly.  Assuming they have an adequate supply of the parts and the production of those stabilized, then it does all come down to how fast they can be assembled and shipped overseas.  I guess we won't know the actual results for a few months, given that we can actually distill the truth from the Sony PR machine.

Bzzt! There's definitely an epsiode of the Transformers where Soundwave transforms into a Walkman sized player right outside Autobot headquarters and Spike picks him up and takes him in not realizing of course that he's a decepticon...despite the icon right on the front of it.

So proportion was never really an issue.  Also (was it Blaster?) also transformed into a boombox who could be carried on the shoulder.

Yes, but as they said, for this Transformer's universe (in the movie) there will not be any crazy mass/size changes like there were in the cartoons.

I think EA/Dice is going to have to prove themselves with this one before I make the plunge.  The fact that they still haven't fully patched BF2 while they intend to release this one in a couple months is just pathetic.  They need to drop their yearly release bullshit and build solid games from the ground up.

Things like the menus/interface that people have been complaining about since the first game should have been fixed years ago and not just trotted out again and again in every new version, expansion and community-splintering booster pack.

I'm only seeing a couple must-buys so far:

-Lego Star Wars II
-Gears of War
-Savage 2 (almost forgot this one!)
-Sam & Max (oops...I did forget this one)

and then maybe a few others if I get a good deal on them (although likely waiting until after Christmas):
-Crackdown (waiting for reviews)
-Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
-Battlefield 2142 (likely waiting to see reviews and for first patch at least)
-NFS: Carbon (the forum effect may make me grab it if it's that good)
-Half-Life Episode 2 (I doubt this will make it this year)
-Splinter Cell: Double Agent

I'm not sure how you guys can say you are going to be buying 20-30 games within a few months.  That's over $1000 and innumerable hours that you won't have to dedicate to every game.
