Don't forget that it also has double the on-board memory to enable sped up cached loading of games.

For anyone that is getting or interested in the new PSP "Slim", IGN has a fairly decent hands-on write up, including some good close-up pictures of the ice-silver model.
9923  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Why can't they... on: August 30, 2007, 01:31:46 PM
That "giant robot-hucking-cars game" was Slave Zero, and there was also an MMO under development of the name Citizen Zero which never came out.  So you really had three games rolled into one.  slywink
9924  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PSP]Dead Head Fred? on: August 30, 2007, 08:24:27 AM
Heh, absolutely not.

This is sort of an action/beat 'em up/platformer game where your character is/was a detective who had his head taken off by the mob.  Some crazy doctor put your brain in a jar on your shoulders and reanimated you...or something.  As you play the game you can change your abilities by slapping on different heads.

The main character's voice is done by John C McGinley, who is probably best known as Dr Cox on Scrubs.

Just note that OXM gave the game a 7.5 and nocked the single player portion pretty bad, and I see that the EGM reviews average to 6.67 (probably a 6 and two 7's).

As for the Vietnam games, can you imagine how much cooler they could be now with something like Crysis' jungle vegetation?
What was the reasoning for the knock on the SP?

They mostly said that is was just an average campaign with some AI issues and such.  Here's some quote text:

...While this setup lends a bit of replayability and removes the tight scripting and forced linearity that the series (and WWII games in general) has been guilty of, it's underused: you parachute in only at the beginning, and --sometimes -- when you die and respawn.  Once you're on the ground, Airborne plays very solidly but unspectacularly.  Gunplay is ho-hum, except for the sadistic location-based death system that causes foes to fall over dead in different ways depending on where the fatal bullet penetrated their flesh.  Bonus points for the effort to the weapon upgrades, which offer (for example) recoild and greater zoom bonuses with frequent weapon use, but don't really enhance the game.

And though the levels are all visually unique, we've fought in too many of these places before.  Both Normandy at D-Day and Market Garden are WWII battles we've survived more than once.  Worse, the AI foes are frustrating.  In short, they're crack shots from any distance, choosing to focus on you even when an AI ally is a nearer, greater threat.  Their precision becomes most painful on the penultimate mission, "Varsity," where you're dropped into a railyard surrounded by snipers.  And though the actual final mission is an engaging sniper-free gauntlet, the finale offers little payoff beyond a short cutscene.  ...

They go on to say that they enjoy the multiplayer quite a bit.

Hooray for Purge!  At least I went up in rank this time.  I'm sure by the next update I will have fallen back since my 360 is in for repairs and everyone else is playing Bioshock and Blue Dragon and Stuntman and everything else that just came out.

I have some very fond memories of playing Streets of Rage on my sega genesis with my bestfriend til the wee hours of the morning

As do I, but I fear that nostalgia might have me primed for another let down. I only regret ONE Live arcade purchase (Street Fighter 2 - because of the poor controls) but there have been a couple of XBLA games turned out to be nostalgia only buys and I've since wished I hadn't picked them up at all. I'm looking at you, Defender.

Considering they all have free demos, there should be no excuse for buying games with poor controls or just aren't fun.  Try before you buy, man!  Tongue

I was looking forward to this one until I read the Game Informer review, and then I put the brakes on.  I was hoping somebody else around here would try it out and give a man-on-the-streets opinion, or at least a couple more reviews to come in.

It doesn't have to be perfect for me to enjoy it, but I don't want to get stuck with a stinker.

9937  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Halo Wars on: August 29, 2007, 02:47:56 PM
Well, to be fair from what they showed there are no more resources than something like Dawn of War.  It could be all "command points" from capturing strategic locations or something.  I don't really expect them to have marines mining for ore.

I like the graphics and the interface looks pretty workable.  However I was kind of hoping that the game would be more tactical and less focused on resources so I was kind of disheartened when they start out showing you all of the different structures you can build at your base.  I would have preferred something closer to Myth.  Hope that's temporary voice acting though- that female voiceover is awful.

Yeah, I was expecting something a little more like Ground Control with no base building, but it looks like it's probably more along the lines of Dawn of War.

To me, booth babes are a unnecessary negative at trade shows.  Obviously I like looking attractive women, but they have nothing to do with the products you are there to see.  They surely don't give a shit about the what they are showing/representing and most people are decidedly uncomfortable with their presence anyway.  Leave them out and show me what I'm there for.
9946  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Gods and Heroes Beta codes on: August 28, 2007, 06:38:56 AM
No, the servers were up when I was trying to play.  The errors came when it was trying to load some particle crap, and I got about 30 error boxes, one after another.  I did get far enough to create a characer, but I couldn't see him and it crashed when I tried to play the game.  Too bad there are no settings to mess with before it loads.
9947  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Gods and Heroes Beta codes on: August 28, 2007, 12:15:48 AM
The game insists on crashing when I try to run it so I haven't actually gotten to play.  What a bummer.

Stuntman: Ignition [360] eventually.

I wanted to pick up Dead Head Fred [PSP] but I read the review in Game Informer (6 and 6) and that basically made it sound like mediocre crap.

Would that post moderation center thing allow you to require that the first 10 or so posts of any new account have to be approved, and therefore allow you to spot and kill spammers before their posts actually get to the board?  Not that we get many of those anymore, but it may be useful.

Hmm... not particularly interested in daxter, but I do like the rest of the items in that bundle.  I'll let it simmer in the back of my mind for a while and decide later.

I have to say that Daxter is a great platformer and really shows what the system can do with great graphics in large worlds with very limited load times (mostly all streamed except for a few warps or at cutscenes).  Lots of fun platforming action, some vehicle levels, minigame dream sequences and extra collection stuff if you want to do that.

Of course if you don't like platformers at all it probably won't convince you otherwise.

I'm surprised at the amount of advertising I've seen for this game, I kind of expected it to be a cult hit at best.  It's in all of the Sunday circulars, I saw a commercial on TV and a poster when I walked into Walmart last night.

The PC and 360 versions were just recently bumped a couple weeks to the 5th, for some reason.  The PS3 is still on for the 17th I think.

9955  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Best Recent Handheld Games on: August 26, 2007, 07:30:35 AM
I've just recently gotten into the PSP, but the best games I've tried so far are Daxter and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror.  I'm also digging MX vs ATV even though it has some long load times.  I'm hoping the new PSP model's caching helps with that.

PSP games that I don't have yet but have gotten good reviews and are on my list: Ratchet & Clank, Crush, Race Driver 2006 (aka Toca 3 or something), Pursuit Force, Burnout: Legends (and Dominator) and Dungeon Siege.  Also considering LocoRoco, Katamari, Hot Shots Golf, SSX on Tour and Mega Man: Powered Up.
9956  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PSP 2000 available for preorder on Amazon on: August 26, 2007, 07:21:02 AM
I'm guessing most gaming stores and such don't want to advertise it and allow preorders since it may canabalize what sales they would be getting in the meantime.

I did notice in Target today that a lot of the regular PSP accessories are on clearance, and I'm assuming that is because of the redesigned stuff that will be hitting with the new model in a few weeks.  Unfortunately, most of them likely won't work on the 2000 because of the changed size (for holders and such) and redesigned ports for things like the headphones/remote.
9957  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Why does the PSP have so many mediocre/bad RPG's? on: August 26, 2007, 07:17:07 AM
It could be the fact that for the most part companies haven't been willing to dedicate the development time and money for lengthy RPGs on a portable system when they could target the larger, more well established market of consoles.  If they have a smaller or second-tier team with less time you end up with mediocre results.

It seems that a lot of games for PSP that had great potential end up falling a bit short.  Hopefully that will start to change soon.

There are standards, but I don't think the people that designed that motherboard had ever bothered to look at them.  Looking at the link I see it is from Dell, so it's probably one of those custom jobbies.
