Yeah, it was announced quite a while ago that ShadowRun will be their first game to support the cross-platform Live Anywhere multiplayer.  I still don't personally think that you can have an FPS played with a controller be directly competitive with mouse and keyboard, but they consistently say it won't be a problem.  We will see once the game launches.
9922  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FlatOut 2 demo on: January 06, 2007, 03:05:09 AM
I can't say I've had that problem, Eduardo, but when you start up the game try to select something other than 60 Hz as your refresh rate.  I usually go with 75 Hz if it is supported for the resolution I am playing the game in.

The Windows Media Player doesn't just rip to WMA, it will rip your discs to standard WMA, WMA Pro, adaptive WMA, lossless WMA, MP3 or WAV with several bitrates available for the non-lossless formats.
9924  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Crackdown to include access to Halo 3 multiplayer beta on: January 06, 2007, 02:34:19 AM
Considering you can make preorders up until the week before the game is released I doubt the beta is only on the preorder discs.  They may put it on the first chunk of copies or something, but to know exactly how many preorders they needed to fill before the manufacturing phase is just not realistic.  EB clerks are not exactly a great fount of accurate information when it comes to...most anything.  (no offense, Misguided)

I would also just make sure that you don't play better with the y-axis inverted (or normal if it is inverted).  I've had some friends for which that seemingly simple change made things work a lot better for them.

Also worth mentioning, in the 360 dashbard you can actually set your profile preferences for three different kinds of games (General, Action, Racing) so it defaults to your preferred control and view method when you start up one of those games.

I'm not sure how "soon" we'll see this.  Didn't they alreaedy say that the 65nm core has been pushed back a while?
9927  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: GTA4: why no PC love? on: January 05, 2007, 05:32:20 AM
There is also the fact that just because PC games aren't huge money makers for retail companies like EB/GameStop (who have their large profit margins made by used console games) doesn't mean that the game companies aren't making money.  It is true that their profits may not be as large as a huge console release, but they also don't have to pay licensing fees to any console makers.  With the rising costs and time of development many games are released cross-platform (including on the PC) to ease some of that expense.

It comes down to the fact that if it wasn't profitable they wouldn't be made, and there are plenty of PC games released and in the pipeline.

I don't want to cause waves, but what is wrong with just using Windows Media Player?  What features are you looking for that aren't available there?  It's all I really use, but I have pretty archaic needs.

I did a quick search and saw there is a free version of 3DSMax, although it is 30 day limited.  I also see that on the Autodesk site they offer free versions of software to students if you sign into their student page thingy, but didn't check out other details.  They also used to have the free gMax modeling and animation tool, but it hasn't been updated or officially supported for a year or more.

Well, if Calvin really wants Guitar Hero I'd be willing to take the sytem off your hands for a reasonable price.  I'll pay $40 and Calvin can pay $100 for GH.  That sounds fair, right Cal?  icon_wink

Seriously, though, I'm willing to work out a deal that benefits all parties.

Well, it sounds like they will be sending in about 15,000 more troops so things are obviously going to improve very soon!  Or something.  The problems are deep seated cultural and religious issues and it isn't going to be fixed by "securing" one city, if they can even accomplish that (which I doubt).

Yeah, that might be enough for me to finally pick up Fight Night.  Especially since I'm about due to start a new game after squeezing Saints Row for all it's worth.  With any luck the used price will drop to $20 since it's currently way below the standard price of $5 less than new.

9939  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: 40% of all rebates not fullfilled, 10%+ of all gift cards never get redeemed. on: January 04, 2007, 04:31:21 AM
I don't have a problem with stores not giving cash back for what is left of a gift card.  The card was money designated to be spent at that store, so you spend it there.  That's why the store has gift cards.  After all, if the person giving the card intended for you to buy a candy bar and get the rest back as cash they could have just given you cash, a check or a preloaded cash card.

And who is to be the one to determine at what level they give you cash back?  Less than $1?  If that, why not less than $5, or $10.  Policies are put in place so that they can be enforced and standard wage workers don't have to put up with assholes arguing about them.  It's people using and abusing systems that causes policies to become more and more strict over time.

My browser still loads as fast as it always has, it has nothing to do with me not noticing technical glitches.  I've been at work and not sitting around all day asking for something to be banned because there was a temporary glitch.

As for reading the PS3 threads...that's a joke.  It's all re-treads of the same goddamn arguments with Hetz baiting and the other dorks biting and then going around and around over who was in the wrong.
9941  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: New Indy on: January 04, 2007, 03:24:58 AM
I haven't read that comic series, but I will say that there is a difference between a real person in a movie and a comic which can make anybody, despite their age or whatever, appear agile, virile and strong.  Seeing Harrison Ford's wrinkley face grimace as he pretends to throw a punch that wouldn't hurt a squirrel just doesn't work as well.  OK, so he might not be all that bad yet, but even seeing the previews for Firewall was enough to convince me he is getting too old for this.
9942  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Re: Can we ban gamer tags? on: January 04, 2007, 03:13:46 AM
I've never had the problem nor seen anyone else complain about it.  Not sure why you would assume it is a problem for everyone else.   It may have just been a temporary problem with the server that hosts the tags.  For the record I use IE7.

9944  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FlatOut 2 demo on: January 04, 2007, 03:07:29 AM
I've never had any problem loading the gamertag avatars nor heard of anybody else having that problem, and they have been used on the site by various people for a few months now.

I pretty much gave up on the ragdoll stunts since I sucked so bad at them.  Something about the timing and controls just never really clicked for me and I saw no point in forcing myself to do something I didn't enjoy when I loved the rest of the game.
9945  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Post your backlog!!! on: January 04, 2007, 02:25:41 AM
I only consider games to be "backlog" if I haven't played them at all or not to my idea of completion (not necessarily to 100%, just until I have gotten my fun out of it).  With that in mind, almost all I have are some PS2 titles I bought on the cheap but don't have a PS2 to play them on:

Lego Star Wars 2 (played about 1/4 of it so far)
    Ratchet & Clank 1,2,3
    Sly Cooper
    God of War

I no longer have an ATI, but you may want to make sure you are selecting the Mobility Radeon in their driver selection screen and not just the regular Radeon.  As stated above they are not the exact same and do use different drivers.  My guess is they previously bundled the drivers for the Mobility line in with the full Radeon pack and have recently switched them to be two separate downloads.
9947  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: No Live Arcade game this week... on: January 03, 2007, 04:48:39 AM
I agree that the Live Arcade has been a pretty big disappointment so far.  I hope they can expand the catalog with some quality, original games soon, and classics like Worms would be a great addition, too.

Roping would be somewhat impossible with a 360 controller, so I would probably pass it up (unless it features online multiplayer then it's a PURCHASE PURCHASE PURCHASE), but the DS version didn't...nor the PSP...soooooooo I'm not really crossing my fingers.

Why would roping be impossible with a controller?  It's not exactly a complex procedure, all you do is hit back and forth to swing and up and down to shorten or length the rope.  Hell, you could put movement on one stick and the rope length controls on the other to minimize conflicts.

I tend to be a procrastinator so I have given up on ever being enticed by a mail-in rebate since I inevitably forget about it until the date has passed me by.  It doesn't really surprise me that quite a few people forget, don't bother or just send the things in too late, what surprises me is that they continue to deceive themselves about what they will be saving.
9950  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: New Indy on: January 03, 2007, 03:27:59 AM
Yeah, Harrison Ford hasn't aged as well as some people (like Sylvester Stallone) and I think putting him in an action movie at this point is just a little sad.  I wonder if he will still be fighting the Nazis?

I finished up the story in Saints Row and have 89% done for all activities and such.  I likely won't finish the Hitman activities, but the others I might.  What's funny is that even with that much finished I have less than half of the Achievement points you can get.  I suppose a bunch of them are multiplayer, though.  Bastards.

Yeah, the retail price on the PC version is only $20 these days (PS2 and XBox are about the same or $10 more).  Good to hear that it's on Steam, hopefully it will broaden the audience even more.  It's a great game and definitely worth that much.

I really wish they could find some better system than just random numbers for their naming conventions.  How do they go from 800s up to 1900s and now back to 600?  Then you have the MX, GT, GTS, GTX, etc.  How the hell is anyone but a dedicated enthusiast supposed to know which ones are actually better than older models?  The best is when they re-release an older, slower chipset using new naming conventions which basically implies it is faster than the fast chips of the older named chipset.

You get water in your ear every time you shower or go swimming or anything like that.  As long as you aren't shooting a high velocity stream directly in there, natural protections will keep you from damage.  Doctor's often shoot a warm water and hydrogen peroxide solution into ears to clear out wax plugs, and it's often recommended to let warm water flow into your ears during a shower to keep your ears from excessive wax buildup.
