I cant stand playing FPS on the PS2 I feel like the dual shock sticks are way too close together and it is very uncomfortable for me.  Part of the reason I am not that excited for the PS3 is the same controller design.  I wish Sony would take a lesson from MS and place the left thumbstick higher and more to the left considering most games these days used a stick rather than the dpad.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

I think I have them from nearly every 360 game I have.  If you need one just speak up!

I no longer play games.  Stealing thunder is my new hobby. :slywink:

Really?  The first one I've seen from a 360 game was in Gears of War.  Maybe I just don't buy the right games or something.

9725  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Battlefield 2142 patch 1.05 released on: November 22, 2006, 02:44:49 AM
I don't know if too many other people around here play this one, but EA has just released the 1.05 patch and you can grab it at FileFront and pretty much everywhere else.  Most of the fixes are pretty minor and deal with stats tracking and such.  Good to see some early support for this one, though.

- Ground Defence kills now count towards Ground Base Defence Ribbon
- Using the Medic Hub now counts towards Silver Medic Excellence Badge
- Silver Titan Destruction - Badge awarded when core is destroyed
- Debriefing End of Round screen displays player stats
- Enemy Squad Leader Spawn beacon is no longer visible on the 3dMap
- Can now bind same key to crouch for common and land vehicles
- User now unable to repeatedly spam a squad leader to join a locked squad
- Spinning tank turret no longer pushes player inside clipped geometry
- Users can play single-player (offline) mode when EA servers are unavailable
- Fixed issue that caused Battlerecorder Playback And Camera Control Interface function
- Corrected missile silo numbers in Titan Mode
- Squad Leader Spawn Beacon can now be used after a round or map change in online games
- Missing game information in Swedish and Danish when a mutiny occurs against your commander added
- Inconsistent game references removed
- BF2142 showing up as Battlefield 2 in Windows firewall exception list fixed
- Patching update message will shut the game down instead of minimize if EA Link is installed on users machine
- Stats tracking optimizations
- Revised AR's deviation per bullet
- Titan no longer moveable by the Commander once Titan shields are down
- Installer checks for BF2142 running in the background before installing patch
- Improved player collision protocol
- Optimized EA Master Server connection calls

Since you read the book, there is a matter me and my friend disagree with from the movie:

Spoiler for Hiden:
He thinks Batman had a twin the entire time.  But I was telling him that Batman acquired his 'twin' when he visitted Tesla.

Either way, it's pretty damn creepy that Wolverine was essentially comitting suicide every night just so he could get revenge.

According to the book
Spoiler for Hiden:
he had the twin the whole time.  The name Alfred Borden was actually a concatenation of the two brothers' names, Albert and Frederick if I remember correctly (lent the book to my friend).  They/he had even gone so far as to change birth records and it takes nearly the whole book before it is found out by Angier.  The whole point is that they/he has been willing to basically sacrifice half of his life for the sake of his magic.  In fact, in the book the brother who is not currently being Alfred basically hides out and does not dress up as the engineer/helper...just one of the many, many differences between the book and the movie.

Also, Tesla never built a machine like that for Borden, that name was given as a way to sidetrack and trick Angier (although it was given in a different manner, again a difference between the book and movie).  Also, in the book the "prestige" result of Tesla's machine is already dead, so Angier is not exactly commiting murder each night.  I could go on and on about the ways the movie differed from the book...

Funnily enough I was just thinking of starting this very topic last night because I've been trying to make a list for my family and such but have trouble as always.  It doesn't help that even though I always list games I want in all price ranges I have gotten only one game in the last 10 years (Giants), so this year I'm not even bothering to add those to the list.  So far I can only come up with a few books and DVDs:

Dr Katz, Professional Therapist Season 2 DVD
Little Miss Sunshine DVD
Mr Show - The Complete 4th Season DVD
Invader Zim - Doom Doom Doom (Vol 1)
Broken Angels - Richard K. Morgan
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer
Sputnik Sweetheart - Haruki Murakami
South of the Border, West of the Sun - Haruki Murakami
A Wild Sheep Chase - Haruki Murakami
A Storm of Swords - George R.R. Martin
any book by Raymond Chandler

When he starts with "First I'd get some gloves that don't fit...." I'd suspect something was up...

Does it actually start like that???!?

And also, I thought just the tv deal was cancelled, not the book?

Nope, read the article and it says the book was cancelled also.  It was "was due to be published by ReganBooks, an imprint of News Corp's HarperCollins publishing division", and News Corp is the partent company of Fox.

I'm glad to hear that the public response has actually helped to stop this crap.
9734  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: finished gears of war...was it cut? on: November 20, 2006, 03:49:25 PM
As far as the storyline goes, CliffyB did mention that they didn't want to throw lots of story exposition down the player's throat and that more details about the world and stuff are in the supplemental materials (manual, art book, online, etc).  Not that it stopped them during that long-ass helicopter ride and setup in the beginning.

But do I think things got cut?  Sure.  It's hard to feel any different when some elements didn't quite fit together and things that could have been awesome (like fighting that Brumak) just didn't show up.  That is the price you have to pay for trying to be the first-party system hit for the holidays.  Hopefully all the other goodies will show up in downloads, an expansion or the inevitable sequel.

I just saw this on the back page of this week's Best Buy ad.  An incredible deal for what has been hailed as one of the best PC games released this year (although I haven't actually bought it yet...).

In the same ad for $19.99 they have Civ 4 and some 360 Platinum hits: PGR3, NFS: Most Wanted, Kameo and Perfect Dark: Zero.  They also have a 60-day subscription to WoW for $19.99 and The Sims 2 Pets for $12.99.

EDIT: A note to mention that these prices are only good up through Wednesday because of Thanksgiving and the following 2-day sales.
9742  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 - totally missing from ads - Wii everywhere on: November 19, 2006, 09:34:21 PM
I think the reason the PS3 isn't in most ads (or any, from what was with my Sunday Paper) is because it was on the cover for most of last week's, and the Wii is just launching today so it gets the cover.

That isn't to say that they shouldn't at least have games and accessories inside with the other console stuff, but maybe they just figured that if they sold out of PS3s as planned it is better not to advertise for something they won't have in stock.
9743  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I am playing with my Wii now :) who else has it? on: November 19, 2006, 09:02:58 PM
I think the thing with the numeric code is that it allows each console to set up it's account while still letting all the little Johnnies and Sallies out there to still use their real name (or chosen name) for their Mii without having to do something like "J0hnnY3GT" so that it can be unique.  They are going after a broader market set than XBox Live and PS3 and kids and parents might not understand why they should have to do that.
9744  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Prestige movie looks awesome on: November 19, 2006, 08:37:33 PM
So I finally got around to seeing this one last night and while I did really enjoy it, I couldn't believe the major deviations from the book.  It was like they took five main ideas from the book and then rewrote everything around them.  I liked how the movie played out and I think the dramatic tension and payoff was perfect for a movie, but they stripped out and/or changed so much that it was hard to discuss it with my friend who hasn't read the book yet.

Still waiting for them to refund my MS points so I can rebuy all my Arcade titles.  It's been a few weeks, three I think, and last night they added 490 to my new silver account.  I can only guess they do them in some odd increment because I'm pretty sure 490 points won't cover the dozen Live Arcade games I bought.

I understand why they did this, to avoid just copying your games for you friends, but I don't have to like it.

Those games should be tied to your account...can't you just re-download them?

Ouch, Wii isn't faring well outside of Zelda, and rumors are, the GameCube version controls better anyway.

Once again, I honestly believe the Wii is different enough from the GameCube to ever be a giant success.

I beg to differ

I also think the poor scores for Excite Truck may be unwarranted. An Opposing viewpoint from Tom Chick on Yahoo
Chick only likes Excite Truck since it's from the same developers as the abysmal Test Drive: Eve of Destruction, which was reviled for the shoddy piece of crap it was by everyone but Tom.

He has his brain farts -- this obsession with shitty racers being the most recent in the long decline which began with him panning Deus Ex.

I enjoyed Test Drive: EoD, and I know a couple other people around these parts did, too.

Excite Truck looks like a very different kind of game and not my style at all.  I haven't played it, but from the videos it looks very arcadey, with the truck pivoting on a central axis and just sliding all over hell with no real friction.  It seems to also have been roundly knocked for being pretty shallow with not many tracks or other options.

The Wii is only $249.

Heh, only $250.  That's still $50 more than the Cube launched for. Remember last gen when everybody was waiting until the PS2/Xbox prices dropped down from launch prices of $300?  Now that is considered a sweet deal for a 360 and the PS3 probably won't hit that price for a couple years.

Taken from some Wikipedia articles:

In terms of major studios, HD DVD is currently exclusively backed by Universal Studios and The Weinstein Company (through Genius Products) and is non-exclusively backed by Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., New Line, HBO, DreamWorks, Image Entertainment, Magnolia Pictures, Brentwood Home Video, Warner Music Group, Ryko, Goldhil Entertainment, and Studio Canal.

There are some important studios there, but only two are exclusive and you will also notice a lack of others that support only Blu-Ray so far (such as Sony's labels, obviously, and Disney/Pixar)

The funny thing is that their original "boomerang" style was kind of similar to Microsoft's Sidewinder Freestyle Pro that they released for the PC a number of years back.  And that one actually contained the tilt-sensing stuff (but didn't have dual analog sticks, since that wasn't the norm back then).  The world is a weird, backwards place.
