I'm surprised at the reviews so far.  Not that they are bad, but I was expecting all 9+ based on how improved it looks over PGR3, the large number of diverse cars and everything.

I'd like to try it out, but I don't know if I could go back to the unforgiving cone runs in PGR after playing Stuntman: Ignition where you can knock over a can or run into something and it won't break your combo.  There's still plenty of challenge to be had with the number of "close" multipliers you can get and the points you get more points the closer you are to something.

Actually, it's only $35 and if you buy it at Circuit City you get a free Zelda pack of headphones and stylus pen.

But PC is generic...personal computer.

Wow, I know MS is all about the "We refuse to comment on rumors or speculation" but that's a pretty wimpy denial.  For the sake of their investors I would expect a much firmer "NO!".

A wimpy denial to a wimpy rumor, if they made any more out of it people might actually suspect some truth to the matter.

I can't agree with that- they could shut the whole thing down instantly with "There is absolutely no truth to this rumor whatsover."
I think that this is the most important point here. The lack of an official denial does not necessarily bode well.

The thing about commenting on rumors is that if your corporate policy is to never comment on them, then you never comment on them.  As soon as you begin denying some rumors but not others, you begin walking on shaky ground and I think they would prefer to be able to always be consistent.

Maybe it was because I was so young, but I never did figure out how in the hell you were supposed to play ET.  It was such a confusing mess.

I think my favorite games were Adventure, Combat, and Air-Sea Battle.

Character creation video looks really good, though I wish there were more stances (like Rock/Punk/Goth) to choose from.

When someone commented that it was sad there was no facial hair shown as an option, my favorite Harmonix rep replied, "I won't go into details, but there's more than what that video shows."

Holy crap!  That is a TON of options for speccing out your character.  I was expecting 4-5 hair options and some outfits, but that is pretty awesome, even if I'll never see it as I'm busy playing.  smile

From what it looks like you can't make like a fatter dude, it's either skinny or muscular and the females look even more indistinct.  Not all rock stars are shaped like that.

Yeah, I've noticed even on games where it has a configuration tool that says "turn down the gamma/brightness until you can't see the dark grey thing" is usually way too dark if I turn it down that far.  I figured it was just me being goofy wanting it brighter.

Are we still talking about the same "shirt with some lights on it?"

So please point out where the bomb is in that pic.

If I put a PC motherboard on my shirt, are you going to call that a bomb, too?

Please point out where it looks like children's backpacks or shoes that light up.

And if you wore a motherboard to an airport, you're damn straight I would want security to check you out.

Returning to the Boston Logan incident, I'm not in favor of calling it a "hoax device" or a "fake bomb," as I personally don't think there was any intentional deception that went on.  I do think it easily fits the bill for a "suspicious device" or "suspicious activity," and I would also give that classification to a shirt with a motherboard glued on.

It doesn't have to look like a bomb in an airport for me to want the authorities to check out the situation.  If someone carries in a big cardboard box that says "NOT A BOMB!" on the side in magic marker, I would want them detained for questioning.

Man, I guess I need to get some new luggage.  slywink

9736  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (10/1) on: October 01, 2007, 01:56:15 PM
I want to buy FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage and PGR4, but since I sill have Stuntman to finish and haven't started Halo 3, I think I will be waiting for a sale before buying them.  Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow [PSP] is also another future buy when I'm less swamped.

So: nothing for now.

What I experienced of the Quake Wars demo wasn't bad, but it seemed very close to the Battlefield series.  Something that has been done before for the most part.  Some things seemed improved or tweaked to help you out, but not as much as I was expecting I think.

I did play the Humans more than the Strogg because didn't like the Strogg weapons all that much, so that may make a difference.

When I grew up it was "pop", so my friends and I started calling it "soda" ironically because it was only older people who would say that, or the even better "soda pop".  Then it stuck and I've called it "soda" ever since.

Regarding the videos from GT's preview, what can be used to play the mp4 files?  I have the newest version of Windows Media Player, and it won't play them, Windows Media Player Classic won't play them, and the mp4 player I downloaded wouldn't play them.

I use the VideoLAN VLC Media Player and it works great.  I actually use that to play all Quicktime movies, too, since it is much more efficient than Apple's Quicktime player.
9740  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: AWESOME Hellgate co-op video on: September 30, 2007, 04:29:30 PM
As I commented in the other thread where I posted this video, I thought it looked pretty boring.  I didn't think the weapons had very good visual or sound effects to give you a feeling of actually shooting them, and it seemed very repetitive.  Hopefully the melee looks a bit more interesting.

I would really love for this game to be cool, but every time I see it it just doesn't do much for me.

Well, while they're working out the kinks on our local video, there is a lenghty one over at VE

Maybe that was a poor point to take a video or not the best classes to show, but I thought that looked terribly boring.  Not to mention the repetitive gun fire sounds.  I'm sure the game is deeper than that, but it looked a bit like a poor version of Serious Sam with loot or something.  I'd like to see some melee combat and see if that looks any more appealing.

Maybe I'll try just going in there without a receipt and see what they say.  I can live with mildly scratched discs that still work fine (and I can get them replaced free from MS when I'm done playing), but as kathode said, having my brand new case all dented up on both sides was the icing the broke the camels cake.
9745  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Halo 3 discs come pre scratched on: September 29, 2007, 05:41:59 PM
Well my experience with Best Buy was not quite as pleasant.  Since I ordered it online with the deal to buy Halo 3 and get 1600 marketplace points for $4.99 I am unable to return or exchange my game without them also charging me full price for the points.  That was the only reason I ordered this damn thing online and I wouldn't have bought the points if they weren't $15 cheaper than normal.  The service desk guy in the store was not helpful, and the non-English speaker on their hotline was even less so.  All I want is a copy of the game without a metal case that's all dented and discs all scratched, but that is apparently too freaking difficult.  Fuck Best Buy.
9746  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Oh, cruel fate! on: September 28, 2007, 10:54:22 PM
So I've been patiently (and sometimes not-so-patiently) awaiting my copy of Halo 3 to arrive in the mail all week.  I preordered from Best Buy online to get in a couple deals they had going and I've put off buying a local copy because I was sure mine would arrive by the weekend.  Well, it finally arrived in the mail today.

However, fate played a cruel trick on me and I also got a phone call saying that I will have my second interview for a programming job first thing Monday morning.  This is an awesome opportunity to get back into my field of programming, and at a game company on a great project no less, but I am in dire need of scraping some rust from my skillset so I can impress.

So here I am with the hot new game everybody is playing and talking about, just urging me to play it all weekend and be able to take part in the discussions, and yet I really need to spend my time studying.  Argh!  What a cruel mistress.  Wish me luck!
9747  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 09/28/07 on: September 28, 2007, 10:42:50 PM
Most of my weekend will be spent convincing myself to crack the books and brush up for a technical interview on Monday morning.  Having failed at that I will likely play Stuntman: Ignition!  And maybe a bit of Halo 3 if it actually arrives in the mail today.  Booo, shipping!

You can now see a video of the PSP version over here at VE, and check out some screenshots at the official THQ site.  I think it looks pretty sweet if you're a fan of the genre or Warhammer 40k.  Of course the PSP version looks better graphically, but the DS one looks pretty cool, too.

I'm almost willing to bet that Kane and Lynch gets delayed just because things have been so quiet about it.  But yeah, there are waaaay too many games coming out in the next two months.  Thankfully the only must-buy's for me on there are PGR4, HL2: Orange Box.  Of course then there's  FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage and The Simpsons game.

Don't forget Rock Band.  I'm sure a lot of you will be buying that the same day as Mass Effect.

And also the PC with Quake Wars, Tabula Rasa, Hellgate, The Witcher, Crysis, Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3, etc.

Our government has asked us to help and do our part to be vigilant so are you saying our government is now based on Communism?
Anotherwords be part of the solution not the problem.
It's easy to put blame on things and criticize. The real deal is contributing to the solution even if it is in small ways.
Last time I checked that had nothing to do with Communism.
This country was founded on all citizens contributing to the defense of the country.

Really?  I think it was founded with white males defending the country.

But we really all do need to be vigilant and do our part to stop thoughtcrime.  Big Brother is counting on us.  War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength!

Why is a silent, passively cooled board a Pro for the Intel but a Con for the AMD?

I used to always buy top of the line motherboards because I wanted that ability to upgrade the CPU a couple steps sometime in the future.  What I found is that I never did that because the price for performance boost never seemed all that great and I might as well just go all new when it was time to upgrade.  No matter what path you go they always make it obsolete within a year.  One of the reasons I haven't upgraded my PC in a long time.
