The previews I've seen haven't made it seem too attractive to me, but knowing it is Brad Bird and Pixar (as well as all of the positive praise) I will likely see it.

Almost, but not quite.  slywink

I've decided to hold off until I see the movie to avoid spoiling it.  I bought the Star Wars Episode 3 game the day it came out for the X-Box but nearly drove myself crazy because I wouldn't allow myself to play it until I saw the movie.

Here's a spoiler for you: robots come to earth and transform into vehicles and stuff.  They fight, things blow up, the good guys win.  slywink

The cars themselves handle much better than the demo indicated. I am not sure if they use 4 point physics as some claim or central pivot as others say, but either way they are great. No, they do not feel as hardcore as the supposed realism in Forza 2, but for the most part the actual cars and trucks perform pretty much exactly as you would expect them to, and the different cars in each class absolutely drive differently and have their own tendancies and idiosyncracies.

I don't just make shit up.  Check out this FAQ at the official forums if you like.

Does Dirt use a “Pivot Point”?
No, it doesn’t. DiRT uses a full four-point physics model (in fact each wheel is calculated as a contact patch of multiple points that can change shape depending on tyre deformation and camber).

Cripes, the way this is going I might just have to join up.  They have really been rolling out the big titles the last few months.  A huge improvement over when this was mostly old Genesis games and such.

My copy of Forza 2 did come with a manual, but apparently there were quite a few that didn't.  Here is a direct link to a PDF of the manual.

Some places say that it is shipping or in-store for 6/26 (Target, Toys R Us, etc), but I think for the ads from BB and CC they want to play it on the safe side, especially CC with their in-store guarantee.  Hell, Best Buy advertised both Forza 2 and DiRT as "In store by 2pm Wednesday" and they had shipping problems with both of them.  Needless to say I told them to shove it and bought them elsewhere.

As an aside, I see that Target has an exclusive on the PC version of the game, and it's only $20!  If you have a 360 controller hooked up to your computer that might be the way to go.

Since I've been purchase happy the last month I don't think I'll be buying anything this week.  I may end up renting (if I can find them) Overlord, The Darkness and Transformers.

BTW-has anyone purchased a car? I think I have just shy of one million bucks but I am trying to see if any particular category of car gets raced more often before I pull the trigger on my first buy.

In the second tier you will have to purchase a car or two to run some races (like the classics and RWD), so I bought a couple of those.  And then I bought a couple other ones to try out, too.  And some Liveries just for shits and giggles.  I still have about a million dollars left and I'm only running at the Amateur rank.

What I thought was funny is that like 6 months ago I had Nick on and they were having those little ad spots where they talk to somebody that works there and a couple of them mentioned Invader Zim as their favorite Nick cartoon, and all of the ad spots featured Zim in them.  And now they play it all the time at later hours.  Even though they prematurely killed the show.  Genius!

Color me ignorant but I have no idea what a vent server is other than what it sounds like - a place to bitch and moan. Anyone care to 'splain?

It refers to Ventrilo, which is a server based VOIP that is used by players in games like WOW, LOTRO, etc.  Sort of like Team-speak but generally better in quality.  The servers are generally hosted or rented by the players or guilds and they can create their own rooms and restrict access to them or the server as a whole.

That's funny, I would've said it feels easier than the demo (I'm using the next to easiest setting, but should probably move up one).

I've just unlocked Tier 3 and really enjoying this. Lots of different event styles, and the vehicle classes handle quite differently.

Yeah, I'm using the amateur setting and am thinking about dropping down to the next lowest, even though Captain You're-Awesome keeps telling me to go for Pro-Am.

Haha, "Captain You're-Awesome"!  I like it.  I've been running the Amateur level and winning most races on my first try and sometimes second.  Ok, there was that one time I had to do it like four times.  Stupid rock.  Stupid terminal damage.  I can still drive with only two wheels!

Misguided, regarding the code, I entered it with the dashes and everything worked fine in the online part, but the code it gives me there doesn't have any dashes and putting that code into my game (both uppercase and lowercase) just tells me it is invalid.  Also, if the codes are all uppercase, don't make me freaking retype it because I used lowercase.  That's a little function called "toupper()", jerkwads.  Get with the user friendliness!

What's to prevent them from releasing the game anyway without the seal of approval?

In the US I would say distributors and retailers who won't take take the game, meaning it doesn't get into stores and to the customers.  I'm not sure how some of the other markets work, but it may be illegal to distribute it in places like Germany and the UK.

I think you guys are underestimating the amount of time and money it would cost to create the game with the content and systems intact and then to remove it.  It isn't as simple as an extra couple days in the editing bay for a movie which already has lots of extra footage and alternate takes and is already being edited for time, pacing, content, etc.
9743  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: DiRT [360/PS3/PC] Impressions on: June 21, 2007, 02:18:15 PM
Just for general information, they use four point independent physics at the tires similar to Forza (although undoubtedly less detailed), not center of mass pivoting.

I agree with you guys that the CORR truck race as the first option in the Career tree may have been a poor choice, given how differently those heavy, overpowered trucks compare to the rally cars in most of the other events.  Not the easiest first race to jump into, but certainly a fun one!  I almost wish there were more of the non-rally types of races (although not at the expense of those).

About the only use for the Internet channel on the Wii is so that you can watch the preview videos of the VC games.  That sort of functionality should be built into their store, but they are retarded like that.

With the crappy distribution and questionable queue system, it sounds like they could really learn a thing or ten from Netflix.  Although I'm sure Netflix has a much higher stock of titles, it's a lot cheaper for them to buy movies than games, and games depreciate in value and desirability in just a couple months.

So if you're always aiming with the nunchuck stick, how do you strafe?  Normally in a shooter the left stick is used for sidesteps and the right for aiming, so that seems like it would be a weird thing to get used to.
9748  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Pranking a vent server on: June 21, 2007, 12:35:52 AM
It shouldn't be that hard to find who is on the server and kick them off.  Or just go into a passworded room.

How good is the navigator in the rally mode?  Helpful and not annoying?

I've only done one rally race so far, but he wasn't annoying to me.  He's American and I think it must be Travis Pastranna's co-driver, Christian, or something.  If you don't like his voice, though, you can turn that volume down independently of the normal volume.

I would also like to say that the little menu examples and help menu stuff that Travis and Christian walk you through are a nice touch, too.  It explains things well and would likely add to a new player's comfort levels.  You can skip it if you like, though.

EDIT: Further impressions:  This game freaking rules!
9750  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Colin McRae: DiRT [360/PS3/PC] demo on: June 20, 2007, 11:47:13 PM
After heading to Best Buy ("Sorry, we're having distribution problems") and Circuit City ("Uhhh, what game?  Is that new?") I finally tracked a copy of DiRT down at GameStop.  They even threw in a card that is supposed to let me unlock 10 extra cars, but unfortunately you have to use that code and your game's unique code to get a third one, and that code doesn't work in the game for me.

Early impressions are that if you liked the demo you should love the game.  Which I think we already knew.  It's nice that they have a more traditional Rally Championship as well as the Career mode with all of the racing types.

If you look at the Boycott Starforce games list, you can see that for North America it is not listed as using any version of Starforce.  That it not the definitive answer, but I would certainly expect them to have it on there if it was a known factor since that is what they do.
9752  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Codemasters' Colin McRae: Dirt on: June 20, 2007, 01:26:38 PM

Welcome to the forums, BiggerBoat!  (or at least for coming out of the shadows and joining in the madness smile )

I have also noticed that after I upgraded my car in a few areas most of the AI drivers couldn't compete, and I'm not all that good.  On later races some of them have very nicely upgraded cars and are quite competitive, but then others in the same race will have crappy stock cars that are two or three classes lower.  It's really kind of weird.

PAL is short for Phased Alternating Line and refers to the method of decoding color information and drawing scanlines on televisions.  It is mainly used in Europe and parts of Asia while North America and Japan use the NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) standard.  That link (and the partner link to NTSC) will tell you more about it all than you would care to know, but basically PAL is 625 scanlines at 50 Hz and NTSC is 525 at 60 Hz.

EDIT: beaten to the punch, but posting anyway

Actually, these days games are likely to cost a lot more than that, up to 75 mil, maybe hundreds? eek

I wonder how much Oblivion cost, that game is about the right scale and complexity.

No games have reached the hundreds of millions to produce yet have they? That would really be outrageous...

didnt Shenmue 2 cost 100mill?...and it didnt make back its money, and thats why SEGA have been edgey on making the third

well thats what i heard anyway

According to Wikipedia, the first Shenmue is their record for most expensive videogame at an estimated $70 million.  Who knows how accurate or up to date that is, though, since a lot of development costs are not fully disclosed.

I agree that there are a lot of good points in that link, but I also think some of what he is seeing is, as he puts it, just seeing 10 gunmen on the grassyknoll.  I know David Chase is very particular about details and I'm sure especially with this being the last episode, but sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, you know?
