Is there a way to check out and compare somebody elses ratings and such before befriending them?  I don't really want to add somebody and then see that we don't have the same tastes and then delete them.

Surprisingly, that does look like it has potential.

So far I am having a pretty good time with this one.  I've played a couple melee classes up to level 9 and 5.  Considering it will be another three months before this is released I am impressed with it.

I had some more comments in there, but I don't know what details of the NDA are.  I can't find those details online and they didn't even tell me where the beta forums are so I'm wondering if it has been lifted or they just aren't applying it to Stress Test people or what.  Daehawk, do you know where I can find those details?
9724  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What will you buy from XBLA with out thinking twice on: January 27, 2007, 06:33:39 PM
Probably the Worms translation because those were awesome games.  Maybe Super Off-Road if it ever makes it there in good form.  Honestly I'd be more interested in original or new updated games than old ports, so it's hard to say for any of those "without thinking twice".  Thank goodness for mandatory demos.

15% + sales tax rates?  eek  and people complain about the 6.75% we have here.  Does that mean you guys pay less income taxes (or whatever the equivalent of those would be up there/over the pond)?

Well, they have other benefits like socialized medicine and such that are probably payed for by taxes like that.

I'll be giving the Lord of the Rings Online stress test a try or two, as well as trying to make some more progress in Ratchet & Clank and possibly a bit more of God of War if it doesn't keep annoying me.  I would most certainly be playing the Crackdown demo if I could ever get it to download, but it continues to defy me.  Curses!
9728  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: LOTRO on: January 26, 2007, 03:48:32 PM
I'm sure part of the night will be spent in queues or lagged in game, but I'm still excited to get a chance to see this one.  They have put out surprisingly little media (video, screenshots) or details of gameplay and I want to see the different races and characters and everything.  I noticed on their preorder site it says "Play as a monster", which would be pretty cool.  Uruk-hai ftw!  slywink
9729  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Unreal Tournament 2007 now UT3 [PC, PS3 and 360!] on: January 26, 2007, 06:01:35 AM
Yeah, I know it's been rumored for 360 for quite a while but this is finally confirmation.  What I think is silly is calling it Unreal Tournament 3 when it is the fourth in the series.  Of course, the fact that it is getting constantly delayed probably plays a part in that.  Plus, I don't know anybody who was a fan of naming them 200X and dreaded the yearly Madden-esque releases when they first started that.

This is one that would be a no-brainer for me to get on the PC given the mouse/keyboard control scheme and mod-ability, but I'm sure my computer won't be able to play it when it finally comes out so it will probably have to be a 360 purchase.   icon_confused
9730  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Unreal Tournament 2007 now UT3 [PC, PS3 and 360!] on: January 26, 2007, 03:55:29 AM
Well, I jammed most of the details into the title, so I'll just reiterate.  Apparently Unreal Tournament 2007 is now being called Unreal Tournament 3 (did they disown 2003?).  The reason I put it in Console Games is that it has also been announced to be coming for the XBox 360 as well as the previously announced PC and PS3.  You can see a new trailer at that IGN link (and hopefully a local copy here at GT soon).

No word on whether the 360 version will do any sort of multiplatforming or only on XBox Live.  Or maybe some sort of Windows/XBox Live and a separate Windows/PS3 open-format?

9733  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Tag - what's yours mean? on: January 25, 2007, 03:54:07 AM
Well, I guess it came from multiple things.  There's an old Roger Miller song called "Engine Engine #9" that I used to hear from my Dad's record player when I was a young'un.  Deftones also have an awesome song called "Engine #9" on their first album, and of course there are numerous children's rhymes using that line (Engine, engine number nine, coming down the railroad line...).  Then there is the Beatles' famous Revolution 9, from which I loved to quote "Number nine?  Number nine?"

Anyway, about the time of playing Half-Life online I started using that name because it was just a sort of faceless/nameless tag and I have continued to use it (although I wouldn't mind a change).

I just got my invite to the beta for the stress test starting this weekend, and I'm about 15% downloaded.  I'm surprised that it's only 2.77 GB, but I'm sure the install will bulk that up a bit.

have you gone to the setup blade, checked the memory option and made sure it's not still on your HD?  It may show up as 'unknown game' or something like that.

Yeah, it shows it there with the exclamation sign instead of the game logo and calls it "unfinished game download cache" or something.  Of course it has it at 1.2 GB, but it sets that much aside as soon as you start downloading.  I've deleted that and retried a few times and still can't get beyond 1% (which it usually starts at, although a couple times it has started at 0%).  I even went and downloaded the Battles of Midway demo just to make sure something hadn't gone totally wonky.  This was a game I was seriously looking forward to and now I'm just frustrated and pissed off.  frown

9738  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW: Burning Crusade sells 2.4 million in ONE day on: January 24, 2007, 06:00:09 AM
Pardon me if this was posted in one of the other WoW:BC threads, but I thought it was worth noting.  Apparently Blizzard has shipped over 4 million copies of the expansion and sold 2.4 million of those in the first freaking day!  These are world-wide totals (almost 1.2 million in North America and more than 1.1 million in Europe), but still that is an incredible amount of sales for one day.  That kind of success calls for one thing... A big minus, IMO, with that design is that the discussions then acquire a time-limit on them.

Now having the article link to a corresponding forum discussion would be better, but I don't check the news unless a headline grabs my eye.

I thought about that, too, but the problem then becomes a lot of extra forum posts that are just press releases and junk.  Unless it only created the auto-post in the forum if somebody clicked on "Comment on this story" or something.  Well, we will see what is coming in the redesign.

Perhaps if the news post automatically made a corresponding post in the forums, allowing for continual discussion past the headline disappearing off the front page?

Dang, I tried to start my download here before heading to work and after sitting for about 10 minutes it gave me a popup that said "The download could not be completed.  Please try again later.  Blah blah"  Man, I thought we were done with that kind of crap.  Maybe their servers are just overwhelmed right now, but it would be nice if it at least put me in some sort of automatic queue or something.

And thanks for the impressions, metallicorphan.  Silly Brits getting up all early.  slywink

I played some more Ratchet & Clank until I got stuck on one level, and then I popped in God of War for a while on Sunday.  So far I am hot and cold on that one.  I dislike not having camera control, especially when you have me trying to tightrope walk across some skinny beam.  Who's the genius that came up with that retarded shit?  I also dislike how the health bars for bosses aren't actually indicative of how much fighting you have left.  Like I saw with the three headed hydra his health recharged each time after doing the mini game to bash his head against the post but then the final time he still had like half health and I killed him with one "hit" by yanking his head onto the pole.  Why have a fucking health bar if it just goes up and down and doesn't mean anything for the player?
9750  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Does Memory Foam... stink? on: January 23, 2007, 03:15:23 AM
For those of you with the full mattresses, I'm curious if there are any problems with it getting permanently "dented" or lose it's springiness after a couple years?  I've seen that happen with some cheaper regular mattresses and that always seemed like it could be a problem with a foam matress.  I mean, even a foam pillow that gets relatively little weight starts to flatten out after a while.

I wish they would have an open beta so I could at least check it out.  Maybe they will have a 7-day trial or something once it launches.  One of my favorite things to do in WoW was just exploring all of the areas and doing crazy things even if I got killed, and it sounds like this has a huge, interesting world that is just ripe for adventure.

Yeah, but more people have played GTA than Hulk.  Plus, it has the whole on-foot, weapons and vehicles aspects of GTA.  So basically it is like jamming Hulk: Ultimate Destruction into GTAIII.  Or something.  smile

Black?  Seriously?

Well, to be fair I think he picked the most voted game from each platform.  Obviously Gears is graphically superior and totally awesome, but for an orignal XBox game Black looked great with tons of explosions and damage and all sorts of visceral fun.  It did "stop and pop" without any special (and frustratingly "special") button for it, also.  I suppose the mutli-player and co-op of Gears gives it a good edge, but I don't really play online.
9758  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Crackdown Demo Delayed on: January 20, 2007, 05:41:14 PM
Free-roaming action game in a GTA-like world where you play an super-human "agent" that is trying to take down three gangs in the city.  Your character develops five specialties/powers over the course of the game depending on what you do (Strength, Agility, Firearms, Explosives, and Driving I think), eventually allowing you to scale and leap from buildings, throw cars and blow shit up with extreme prejudice.  Morphing cars, light-pole bats, car-door shields and other craziness in solo or drop-in co-op modes.

Here's a trailer, or the same thing in high-def

On second thought, this trailer (also in HD) is maybe a better showcase of gameplay.

Glad to see a concrete date for the demo.  I'm really excited about this one, hopefully it is as awesome as it seems.

One thing I saw that is kind of goofy is that the demo is a modified version of the game.  From their website: "note that Agent leveling is enhanced in the demo to provide a better understanding of the advanced abilities of these physically augmented peacekeepers.".  It also doesn't support drop-in co-op like the full game will, so hopefully that doesn't turn some people off.
