9721  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyon heard anything good about Earth Defense Force (360)? on: March 22, 2007, 01:21:07 AM
As ATB mentioned, GameSpy gave it a 4/5 and said it would be rated higher but it was a bit of a step back from Earth Defense Force 2 (Japanese PS2).

I'm a fan of the cheesey old school sci-fi setting and it sounds like it might be a good bet for $40.

Haha, those 150 sales are really going to put them over the top.  slywink  Or maybe these games are more popular than I give them credit for, but I don't know a single person that plays them.
9723  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What the heck is Nintendo thinking? A cook-off Wii game! on: March 21, 2007, 04:40:11 AM
My biggest problem with the Wii (beyond the lack of games) is the true inconsistency and frustration with trying to get the wii-mote to give reliable input.  Every time I have played a game, whether by myself, with gamer friends or with total non-gamers like my parents, there have been instances of the controller giving inconsistent, confusing input and that only leads to people questioning whether it was an error on their part, or the game, or the controller, or who knows what.

If you want something like this to appeal to the casual non-gamers, it had better be easy to use, idiot-proof and give some useful fucking user feedback.  My mom shouldn't have to wonder why the system is detecting her backswing as a half-assed full swing or why you can't get the damn game to detect a normal soft putt, it should just work.  Lord knows that if it doesn't work as expected or makes them feel stupid it is going to get set aside like a broken appliance. Even for someone like me who has a software background it is frustrating.  It comes off as extremely shoddy work and from everything I read it seems to be omnipresent in nearly the whole library.
9724  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Devil May Cry 4 on 360! on: March 20, 2007, 04:17:04 AM
They have previously put Devil May Cry 3 and the Onimusha games onto the PC (although usually late) so no big surprise there.  I hope this one turns out to be really good, and I'm glad that I'll get the option to try it on my 360 (because I'm sure I won't be able to afford another system this year).
9725  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii yellow light question on: March 20, 2007, 02:34:49 AM
Yeah, had I actually purchased the Wii instead of receiving it as a gift I would be pretty pissed about the state of releases, too.

Even in the most recent issue of EGM they had a special Wii preview section and most of the write-ups made almost all of the forthcoming games sound very mediocre (except something like Paper Mario).  And there just weren't that many original games there to begin with.
9726  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (3/19) on: March 20, 2007, 01:44:52 AM
No must-buys for me this week, but I'm waiting to see on Earth Defense Force 2017, Stalker and Godfather: Blackhand.
9727  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weeken Recap 3-19-2007: The Hangover Edition on: March 20, 2007, 01:34:54 AM
I played some SSX  Blur and after much frustration passed the damnable slalom part of the tournament to unlock the second peak (yes, I suck).  I also introduced my friend and his wife to Wii Sports and had a ball.  Auto Assault is having a free 10-day account reactivation so I tried that out again to see everything they've changed and updated, but the core game still isn't as fun as it should be.

For movies I watched Casino Royale and Season 1 of The Tick.  Good stuff.

It is going to be multiplatform on the PS3 as well, just for general info.

Didn't they say the 360 version was going to have a better AI for the crowd? or did they figure out how to translate that to the PS3?  Plus I think there's supposed to be a PC version as well.

I wouldn't take anything a producer says more than a year before release too seriously, especially if it was being showcased on one platform at the time.

9734  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: SSX Blur Review(s) on: March 18, 2007, 02:39:28 AM
So is anybody still playing this one?  I picked it up last weekend and I have to say that I have a very strong love/hate relationship with it.  I love the feel of just carving down the mountain (to the point where I wish you could just do a true freeride) but other things like the Slalom and inconsistent tricks are extremely frustrating.

I honestly can't believe that slalom course you are required to beat just to open Peak 2.  Once you go too fast or lose control at the halfway point with those moguls you are just screwed and might as well restart.  I was inventing new swear words like I was blowing bubbles.

I don't have too much trouble performing Uber Tricks when in the half-pipe, but they work only 1/4 of the time (if that) when I'm actually going down the slopes.  I wish there was just a simple on-screen indicator after I push 'A' so that I knew it was taking my input for an Uber.  User feedback = good.  I guess I will have to try releasing 'A' right after I input it like you suggested, wonderpug.

The regular tricks tend to be a bit more of a toss up for me.  Many times it doesn't seem to do what I want so I end up just flailing my arms like a spaz.  Button mashing for the new generation, I guess.   icon_frown  Also, what is with not being able to start a spin if you are in a grab?

I've noticed that when I do some Challenges (slopestyle, type I think) it ports me to another part of the mountain that is more wide open, very long and no signs or rails or anything.  Is there a way to just go to those areas when I want to?

Yeah, I agree that the UT2004 CE was an awesome package and one of the very few I've bought.

I also thought that the World of Warcraf CE was quite comprehensive, including the huge hardcover art book, behind the scenes DVD with cinematics, cloth map, soundtrack CD, game on CD and DVD as well as the in-game pets.  And that was $50 less than this Halo Legendary edition.

I'm glad to see that they did some graphical improvements.  I have a hard time going back to some of these 2D games when the main characters seem to have 3 frames of animation.  Hopefully that is one of the things they upgraded.

Castlevania: SoTN always had lots of animation for its attacks, and movement in general. Take a real close look at his cloak when you move around, and you'll see what I mean.

I'll ditto this; SotN had some of the best 2d animation I've ever seen in a video game. Very slick, very detailed. And the soundtrack is still one of the best ever too. icon_biggrin

Well, the only recent footage I've seen of the game (over here) still looks pretty stilted and non-fluid to me.  That standing jump and swing of the whip is just painful.

I'm not sure what exactly your problems are with XBox Live since you said everything tests out fine.  Have you done any port forwarding?  For help, just find your router on the list at PortForward.com (they have most manufacturers and models) and they should have step-by-step instructions you can follow.

If you just want the port info they also have a list of common ports, including those needed for XBox Live (3074 TCP and UDP, 88 UDP).  They also have general info on what port forwarding is and such if you haven't done that before.

It is also worth checking on your router manufacturer's website to see if there is a firmware upgrade for your model, I know mine had an update from a couple years ago that supposedly helped XBox Live compatibility.

I agree that I probably wouldn't pick it up at full price, but considering it will be launching for only $39.99 (normal 360 games are $59.99 here) I think that's a pretty good deal if it turns out decent.
9749  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: (360) Earth Defense Force 2017 on: March 17, 2007, 02:03:39 AM
Yeah, I think this could be a really fun, mindless shooter.  I mean robots, aliens, giants bugs...how can that not be awesome?  OK, the main character looks quite generic but who gives a crap about that?  (besides Starshifter, of course slywink)

Also, I think they could safely cut the first 30 seconds of that trailer and just give us more shit blowing up.  Am I right?

Not a big surprise since the XBox is no longer in production, hasn't been for quite a while and isn't widely available anywhere, really.  Plus, the PS2 still has some great games that that just came out (Guitar Hero 2, God of War 2, etc) whereas Microsoft long ago turned all focus to the 360.

9752  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Tiger Woods - Wii on: March 16, 2007, 04:53:30 AM
I haven't played the game so I can't give true advice, but one thing that occurred to me is that if you are in a stance where on a full backswing the Wiimote is facing back over your neck and towards the TV (and sensor bar) perhaps when it "see"s the sensor bar it is recalibrating the wiimote position for pointing which then screws up how it interprets the swing?

It should be easy enough to test if that is the case, you could just take swings that don't go quite back that far so the Wiimote's pointer end doesn't face the sensor bar, or you could turn your stance so that your body is facing the TV and the Wiimote shouldn't ever "look" in that direction.

I don't have much to contribute as far as MP3 blogs (mostly because I have never read one in my life), but if you want to try something kind of neat that might suggest some new music based on analyzed styles of the music you already like, check out Pandora created with the "Music Genome Project".  It will tell you why it has suggested something and of course you can give your feedback of if you like it or never want to hear that again.

Ahh, a clean desktop. I've forgotten what those are like. I'd post mine but my machine imploded this week and I'm not interested in trying to fix it until I can do so without screaming at it in rage.

Frankly, I don't understand why people don't have clean desktops (or at most like 5 icons on it). I hate when a desktop becomes a clutter of icons with a picture buried underneath. I mean, that's why you have the Program Launcher for cripes sake. biggrin

No, that is what a desktop is for.  You put things on it.  My Programs list is three pages wide and since they aren't in any logical freaking order or are hidden in some bizarre publisher/developer folder it is actually more difficult to find things on there than to have program/game icons directly on my desktop.  I am a very visual person and can usually remember right where the icon was that I wanted and the icons are distinct rather than just more folders.

And how many times do you just sit and look at your desktop picture anyway?  Either I have some program(s) running or I'm not sitting at my computer.  I see my desktop between closing out one program and starting something else, and that's about it.

The one thing that I really hated about FarCry was that as soon as you shot or made noise the AI could immediately detect and shoot at you very accurately through a long distance even with foliage and whatnot all over the place.  Often in heavy jungle they could get off many shots or even kill me before I figured out where they were, and that's just not fun gameplay.
