So how long are you expecting this "challenge" to go on?
9682  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone try the Kane and Lynch Demo on Live on: January 01, 2008, 05:17:58 PM
Well, after seeing the game on sale this week and Knightshade playing it on Live (mostly likely for review, but I can pretend it was for fun) I went out and picked it up with a BB gift card I had.

So far I have to say that I like it quite a bit.  The gameplay mechanics are the same as the demo, although there are some things I didn't realize I could do before.  For example, if you get next to a teammate and pull up your inventory (click right stick) it will also bring up theirs so you can give/take/swap weapons with them.  You can also do silent hand-to-hand take-downs by walking up to a guy and hitting 'A', which is useful when trying to not alert other enemies.  Your AI teammates are actually not total retards for once, but you can give them quick orders if you'd like to have them defend, follow or attack your target.  If you stick close to them they can revive you with an adrenaline shot if you go down, and you can do the same for them (although they rarely get killed).

The graphics are not "next gen" by any means, but they are serviceable and pretty good considering all the bullet holes and destructibility in the levels.  It's a more understated "soft" style than something like Stranglehold, but I don't think it looks any worse as a whole and the levels are less cluttered.  The effects while in tear gas and such are kind of cool.  Also, the nightclub level is quite cool in a disorienting, claustrophobic way.  With the crazy lights and all those people in there you get paranoid that one of the guards got behind you (and they probably did if you weren't careful).

The story has turned out to be a little better than I was expecting, other than some mediocre dialog and stuff (especially involving Lynch's blackouts).  There is still an abundance of swearing, but only really in those scenes so not while acutally playing the game for the most part.

The only big downside so far is that there seem to be points where things just get a bit difficult for me and I die about 10 times and have to restart the 'scene' (there are frequent save checkpoints).  That can usually be overcome by switching up your tactics a little, but it can be frustrating.  Unlike COD4, if you want to take your time and kill the enemies one at a time instead of rushing at them, it is a valid way to play and the cover mechanic supports that.

I'm guessing KD will be writing a review for the site soon enough, but if you enjoyed the demo you should give the game a rent because I think it's better than the hype/hate made it seem.  A bit of a spiritual successor to the gameplay of Freedom Fighters mixed with a heist movie like Heat.  These are good things.

I screwed up and thought that I had to work today so I just got some Chinese food, watched a movie and went to bed about midnight so I could get to work on time this morning.  And then I turn up and nobody else is here.  That will teach me not to look at the next month/year on the HR calendar!

I didn't think Ratatouille was nearly as good as some people say, but it was loads better than Cars.  That was easily the worst of the Pixar movies.

Wall-E looks like it could be pretty good, even if he looks way too much like Johnny-5.

9688  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox Originals for next year? on: December 31, 2007, 04:51:59 AM
Over at the Surfer Girl Reviews Star Wars rumor blog she lists some original XBox games that are supposedly coming out this next year.  If she's right, there may be a few happier people around here (mostly because that should mean they also get straight backwards compatibility).  I've bolded some interesting ones:

Some of the 2008 additions to the Xbox Originals lineup: Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding, Amped 2, Armed and Dangerous, Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Blinx 2: Masters of Time & Space, Blood Wake, Brute Force, Conker: Live & Reloaded, Dead or Alive 3, Deathrow, Dino Crisis 3, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Fable bonus content, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, GunValkyrie, Halo 2, Jade Empire, Jet Set Radio Future, Mechassault, MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, Midtown Madness 3, Ninja Gaiden, Quantum Redshift, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Phantom Dust Rent-A-Hero No. 1, Shenmue II, Sneakers, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Stubbs the Zombie in "Rebel Without a Pulse", Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus, ToeJam & Earl III: Mission to Earth, Tork: Prehistoric Punk, Voodoo Vince, Whacked!. Service expected to have over one hundred titles end of next year.

Nice to see ones such as Armed and Dangerous, Deathrow, Voodoo Vince, Metal Arms and the Mech Assaults.  I know at least one person around here will be happy to see her mention Midtown Madness 3, too!  Of course it's just rumor, but she has been right about other things before.

Oh, and she also mentions that Cryptic is no longer working on the Marvel MMO and some other things.

I was in Target tonight and saw about 10 copies of Tony Hawk's Proving Ground Limited Edition [360] on clearance for $29.50.  I think it includes a second DVD with some Tony Hawk skateboarding video tips/tricks and some Guitar Hero 3 content (demo and character unlock for Proving Ground) and such.

Too bad it wasn't Skate, because I would have bought that one.

I use a car sharing service (, and they have a few Prius available.  One is parked right near my house, so I've used it a bit.

I've always been pretty impressed with it, no issues with accelleration or anything.  Since I don't pay for gas (gas and insurance is included in the rental fee), I cant really judge how good it does on that front, but from a strict performance viewpoint, it's a pretty nice car.

That thing seems pretty cool.  Too bad nothing here in our area but could see that being handy.  Would be great when a pickup is needed to move something.

For a lot cheaper you can just rent a U-haul pickup for a day if you need to.  I think it's only $20 a day for local use (same price as a van or 10' truck).

There are about 8 times as many players in COD4 than usual.  I wonder if H3 is seeing such an increase.

Bottom line, XBL needs about 100 times more servers/capacity than it already has.

Time for a class action!

I can imagine that the $37-40 sales on COD4 has seriously increased those numbers.  I know I wouldn't have bought it without that sale last week.

It's actually kind of nice to see big name games actually giving people a break in price for once, instead of having to wait 6+ months (same goes for Assassin's Creed).
9692  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Video downloads wave of the future? Yeah right on: December 30, 2007, 08:55:58 PM
The problem with the used games/DVD business is that none of the money in that industry actually goes to the people that produced the product.  You may be paying 90% of retail price, but 0% of that goes to support the creators.  It's all profit for shitty businesses like GameStop and Blockbuster.

Was anybody able to figure out the "Sythesize" mechanic?  I joined a couple weapons and items but all it seemed to do was average their qualities rather than add them up or create something new and unique.  Why would I pay to create something that seems worse than one of the original items?

I'm not a fan of buying only digital media, but one alternative is that if things like On Demand keep expanding there will be less need for me to rent movies.

Just because Walmart won't be continuing their service doesn't mean that the whole field of downloaded movies is a bust.

Yeah, "Up and running" for 10 minutes at a time, maybe.  I can't believe they've been having these problems for several days in a row.  Unacceptable for a paid service as far as I'm concerned.
9697  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kingdom Under Fire: Cirlce of Doom demo on: December 29, 2007, 10:59:13 PM
I saw this demo on the XBox Live Marketplace and figured I'd give it a try.  I have to say that I had fun with it.  Not enough to make me buy the full game, but certainly entertained for a while (and it was a lengthy demo, at that).

Basically this is a hack-n-slash game kind of like Dynasty Warriors or Ninety Nine Nights, but I enjoyed this one more than I have those others when I tried them.  The enemies are mostly sword fodder, especially the smaller ones right away.  There are a ton of weapons of different styles, many with special abilities added on to them.  I think the depth of the game will come from selecting your best weapons, but you can also learn skills/spell type stuff.  The 'price' for learning new skills is that you have to kill a set number of certain enemies.  Kind of a unique mechanic to me.

The graphics look really nice and your character moves quite fluidly all over the screen when you're attacking.  The levels are very narrow and corridor-ish (even though they're in the forest, sort of like Fable) so there isn't too much exploration to do other than alternate paths.

It says that the levels are randomly generated and has drop-in coop for 2 to 4 players over Live and 6 different characters to play.  That seems like it would really lengthen the playtime you could get out of this.

Anyone else give the demo a try?

I haven't gotten to play it yet (no PS3), but it seems to me that console controls mixed with fast-as-you-can accurate shooting are not a good mix.  I can see it working much better with a mouse for aiming.  Obviously some people are very good at aiming with a controller, but I don't think you could ever be as good as a mouse just by the nature of the device.

9701  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone try the Kane and Lynch Demo on Live on: December 29, 2007, 06:18:22 AM
I just tried out this demo tonight and I have to say that I actually enjoyed it.  It may not be the prettiest or best game ever, but based on that demo I would definitely buy it for $30, if only for the chance to finish that escape shootout where the demo ended.  It was reminding me of Heat, and that is a very good thing.

I like the auto-cover mechanic and think that unlike some games it actually worked quite well.  The destrucibility was also kind of fun; not as crazy as Stranglehold but lots of chunks falling off pillars and such.

I didn't like the dialog and I think that and the "story" would be the only big downsides for me.  I don't need to hear "fuck" every fourth word to realize I'm playing a mature game.

It's not just that the encounters are scripted, it's that they are made to keep throwing enemies at you until you pass a certain line.  If I want to stay in the doorway and pick off enemies as they come at me I should not face more of them than if I go in gunning like Rambo.  It's counter-intuitive to how a squad like that would approach the situation in my mind.  There should always be a certain number enemies in a given room/building/whatever no matter how I approach it.

I got a 30gb Zune for $100 a couple months back and I have been very happy with it, especially since the November update.  Of course if you plan on purchasing things from iTunes it won't work, but pretty much any other source will do the job.  As a bonus it also has a nice screen for video, FM radio and such.

The downside is that it is larger in size than something like the Shuffle or Nano, if you are planning on listening while running or something.

I have to say that the ever-spawning enemies (especially in something like that TV Station mission) really piss me off.  I can sit there and keep killing enemies for 10 minutes straight and make no progress, but if I run in like freaking Rambo and get past some invisible trigger all of the sudden there aren't any more guys coming from that direction.  Retarded.

That's why I think CoD's campaign is best played through 1 time.  When you play through again and start to notice the triggers you lose the illusion.  Playing on Veteran kind of forces you to take advantage of the triggers which sucks out the fun IMHO.

Well this is my first time playing through the campaign (on normal difficulty), and truth be told the first time I'm playing through more than a demo of a COD game.  I really noticed it while I was hanging back at the TV station and trying to kill all of the enemies but they just kept coming.  After several futile attempts at that I just ran in like a maniac and cleared it.  Stoopid.

It also seems inconsistent on when it registers killing your AI teammates.  I've killed some with a shot to the head with no repurcussions but throwing back an enemy grenade kills one and I have to start over.  Fuck that.

Yeah, I'm watching it right now and I have to agree.  Pretty generic cast and despite being all about blowing stuff up there are very few interesting elements to the show.  It's a very poor attempt to make a whole show out of that one small element of Mythbusters.

Maybe they can develop it into something decent, but I don't know if it will have the lifespan to do that.  I'd also like to see them use more fully though out scientific methods, but that won't ever happen I'm afraid.
