I have gotten three emails to my hotmail account from two different people to some lady who is apparently living in France and her friends/relatives were talking about dividing some crap after somebody died.  They kept the tea set for her.  Or something.  They wrote such cryptic emails that upon receiving the first one I assumed it was spam.  After the second I wrote back to the original mailer, and then received the third from something else.

The funny thing is that my hotmail address (seraas@) is just my first intial and last name, and not exactly a popular one.  And the lady's name they were writing to did not start with or contain any of those letters.  I really wanted to inquire as to how she came up with that combination.

9684  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Demos questions on: October 06, 2006, 02:00:16 AM
As for why we aren't seeing more demos out on Live right now, I would say it is two-fold.  First off is that the games are coming out for the holiday season and 80% of games purchased then (a made up percentage) won't be purchased by the player themselves but as a gift.  With huge AAA type games like those you mentioned most gamers who are interested in them are willing to purchase them without a demo, and if the demo comes out a few weeks (or months) later it likely won't hurt those initial sales too much.

Also demos often require an extra bit of work from the development and testing teams before they can be sent to Microsoft for certification testing and release.  With all of those teams crunching just to get the games out before the holidays they are probably more concerned about that.

GoW shouldn't spend too much time in your backlog - it's supposed to be only ~10 hours long.

No, no, no!  Epic's Mark Rein took great pains to express that the rumors of it only being 10 hours is completely untrue.  It's actually 12 hours!  This 10 hours stuff is a complete misrepresentation!  [/sarcasm off].

10-12 hours is almost a perfect length for me.  15-20 is perfect.

Ditto with me.  For most games that go up to 40+ hours of gameplay I end up either getting bored with it or side-tracked with something else and never going back to it.  I am much happier when I play a 15-20 hour game to completion and am still excited enough to replay it a bit.

Pricing of Sam and Max. I think i'm going for the whole season pricing

Without further ado, here is the pricing for Sam & Max: Season 1:

Individual episodes: $8.95
The entire season: $34.95

Buying the entire season gets you access to each episode as soon as it comes out on Telltale's site (we'll send you an email to let you know it's available), and next spring you can get a CD version of Season 1 for the price of shipping. Remember, there will be six episodes in Season 1, which means buying the whole season up front will save you almost $20. We'll start taking preorders for Season 1 in a couple of weeks.

Ditto.  This is one game where I am willing to support them up front to help ensure the success of future episodes.

Has anyone figured out how to shoot down the helicopters? I've only liberated the first two provinces and done a few of the main missions and collection missions so I'm not that far in. But I can't for the life of me take down those choppers and I grow annoyed.

There's a couple ways to handle those annoying helicopters, but mostly they are a pain in the ass I avoid.  You can actually damage them with your regular machine guns, but vehicle mounted guns or cannons are more powerful if you can get them aimed that far up.  Later on you also get access to rpgs and rocket launchers, so they make quick work of most everything.

Of course, the easiest way is to have a heavily armed chopper of your own.  You get access to a lot of these later on, as well, and can steal them from areas around the map.

Once you get the grappling gun (after the second or third mission, I think) you can also shoot that at the copter, try to zip up the line (right trigger) and then hijack it.  The only problem with this is that often after you have started to zip up the line the chopper will fly forward over your head and your line will automatically drop.  The only thing you can try to do is zip up the line as quickly as possible and hit the Use Vehicle button right away, or else try to turn in the correct direction to follow it as it passes overhead.  It takes practice and can still be difficult and frustrating since you are getting shot up at the same time.  Which is why I usually hide under the jungle canopy as much as possible and just keep moving forward.

Yup Mortal Kombat was running on the 360!  It looked ok, I mean all I could really tell was that it had a lot of characters to choose from (more than I remember there being.)  But yeah everything they had was running on 360.

Oh and on NFS Carbon, the race that I ran was a night race and yes there was a lot of neon and a lot of those stupid neon roadblock turn signs.

MK: Armageddon actually contains all of the charcters from all of the previous MK's (including bosses) as playable characters and I think it adds up to 62 total.  That is one of the big reasons this one interests me.  I can't say I expected it to look too spectacular considering it's a "prev-gen" game, but the backwards compatibility is good news.

One question: was Mortal Kombat playing on a 360?  I'd be happy to hear if it was because that would probably mean backwards compatibility near shipping.

I like racing games a lot but I think I would be more interested in NFS: Carbon if it didn't look like it was all or mostly night driving.  After playing Tokyo Extreme Racing I don't think I ever want to drive at night again.  Ever.  Black night with reflections and bright neon signs gives me convusions.

One nice feature that neither Saints Row nor GTA had (at least often) was how the NPCs are often fighting eachother in here. Sometimes you'll see the military and police fighting some type of street gang(s), running behind cars and lobbing grenades at the other guys, and then if you get in the middle of it you're fair game too. I ended up getting in the middle of it and taking out a couple of cops and next thing I know I've got tons of them coming after me. Jumped on a motorcycle and sped down a never-ending road past tiny villages on the ocean doing my best do dodge all the police and military vehicles trying to stop me.

Heh, that is a neat thing.  I don't know how many times I've heard a sirent or seen bullets fly by and thought "Ah shit, the cops!" and then looked up to see that my wanted level is zero and it's somebody else getting shot at.  icon_smile

I'll agree that some of the Achievements are pretty easy, but also notice that some are only worth 5 or 10 points.  You can check them all out here.  I have yet to be able to get the damnable 1000m base jump.  I can't even break 400.  I either end up face-planting half-way down the mountain or using my parachute.  I can't find a place that is steep enough so that I can get further away from the mountain and still have a long-enough run to get me the 1000 meters.

Yeah, it's an old-school, budget chase movie.  The plot is weak and the acting poor, but the chase scene makes up nearly half of the movie, measuring something like 38 minutes.  The director/producer/writer/actor/stuntman basically built a full internal roll-cage into the main Mustang and proceeded to totally fuck it up hardcore during the chase scene.  They only used one for the whole scene, and at one point he lost control on the highway and actually takes out a light pole at over 100mph!  During that chase scene they wreck over 90 cars (many of which the DVD explains were "borrowed' from a friend of the director who had a car lot).

9712  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: How to draw Female Comic Characters! on: October 01, 2006, 05:22:21 PM
Actually, GGMark, body builder men do generally look like comic book guys.  They can be taken way over the top, but it is usually within the realm of the plausible.  Obviously comic women take on a generalized skinny, athletic shape instead of body builders to be more attractive, but how many athletic women do you see that look like that?  I mean, do the women's super powers take all the fat from thier waists and inject it in their breats for artificial support or what?

I'm not saying that every comic woman has to have smaller, realistic breasts, but it would be nice if not every single one of them had huge fake spherical globes on her chest.  I don't find that attractive in the real-world and it doesn't appeal to me in comics either.  There is no reason that they can't reflect a broader range of body shapes and still keep them sexy and strong.

This is also something I wish certain game developers would learn.  I'm looking in your direction, Dead or Alive guys.

I remember reading somewhere a ways back that it is'nt the game we were expecting. It started out as you playing a school bully and terroizing the schoolyard. Then the last stuff I read they had completely changed it to something else. It appears they caved into the whiners out there and made you some type of anti bully or tattletale.

That may be partially true, but I think it may be more a case of what people were expecting from the name of the game than what it ever actually was.  When it was first announced over a year ago I don't remember Rockstar ever saying that it had you playing as a bully.  In fact, going back to an announcement in May of last year:

This is the first game being developed by Rockstar Vancouver and it follows the story of a troublesome schoolboy in reform school as he tries to stand up to bullies, gets picked on by teachers, plays pranks, and even tries to get the girl. All of this takes place in the fictional Bullworth Academy.

I unlocked The Eagle's Nest late last night and did try diving off it a couple times but couldn't get far enough away from the mountain without hitting the parachute for a couple seconds.  I will have to try again a few more times.

Kobra, I think with the more negative reviews it's a case of being annoyed by the shortcomings of the game or what it isn't rather than being entertained by what it is, a light-hearted action game in a wide-open world.  To each their own, but it's certainly been eating up my weekend.

9716  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Who do you trust? on: October 01, 2006, 04:03:15 PM
Other than getting my own hands on the game or demo I tend not to trust any one source too much.  If I am interested in a game I tend to do the shotgun approach and read as many reviews and impressions as I can to get a feel for what problems people are seeing and how I percieve myself dealing with those issues.

Magazines can be could for addressing overall systemic problems with a game and reading their text can be worthwhile, but you will rarely see them address the issue of bugginess because they are often running pre-release code due to the two month run-up to printing and they can't keep up with the release of patches even if they are running production code.

Forum users can be great for getting a real-world view from somebody who has shelled out the cash for a game, but they can also tend to be a bit more extreme in their views.  The great thing is that you can get a much broader view on the game, see back-and-forth discussions on interesting/problem areas and keep up with a game as it gets patched.

Online sites fall somewhere in-between those two, depending on the site.  I tend to read them en masse to contribute to the aggregate review in my head.

So I've been doing a lot of the Liberation side missions and I'm curious about something.  When you start these missions there are Bonus objectives to destroy along the way (crates of coca, weapons caches or police stations) marked by black dots on the minimap.  What is th actual bonus is for destroying those things?  Maybe I'm just not paying attention and it's giving me faction prestige as I destroy them but I haven't noticed any bonuses after completing the Liberation.

I've also had a few times where I was unable to destroy one of those bonus crates no matter what I throw at it and that is annoying since once you liberate the settlement you don't get the chance to reset it or try again.

metallicorphan, for the 1000m base jump did you go off one of the mountains for that or what?  So far I haven't really found one that is adequately high and has a steep enough drop so I can angle out before hitting the parachute.
