I threw my hat in the ring, although with pre-orders getting beta accounts I'm not holding my breath for too many to be available.

Congrats on purchasing what may be the most overlooked gaming system out there right now smile  There's a ton of great stuff in almost every genre on the PSP - glad to see folks are still giving it a chance...

Really liking the PSP so far, but I still think the DS is the better system. Looking through what I have may missed in the puzzle/strategy/RPG area, it doesn't seem like there is a lot out there. Now if you like action games, it does seem the PSP is superior (I don't though).

Really? I thought there were a ton of RPG games for PSP, although they are almost exclusively Japanese or tactical (with Dungeon Siege being the one exception I can think of).

For puzzlers I've heard great things about Crush and want to pick it up soon (though likely not until it hits $20), and of course there are Lumines, Puzzle Quest, Mercury Meltdown, Luxor, Exit, Sudoku, Crossword, etc.

You're right that there are quite a few action and racing games on the PSP, though.  Thankfully those are a couple of my favorite genres.

Really hope Reality Pump makes more RPGs as this isn't bad for what I assume is their first RPG as I mainly know of them doing RTS.

They also did the quietly released KnightShift from a few years ago.  It was sort of an isometric action-RPG with some RTS elements in the campaign or straight action-RPG in another mode.  It was well received in eastern Europe, I think.
9564  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: skate. on: September 17, 2007, 03:13:22 AM
Yeah, but you have to engage it by clicking down on both sticks, and that is just freaking retarded, especially in a game where you are otherwise keeping your thumb on the buttons.  If it was easier or did it automatically when your "awesome guage" was filled, then I might like it.

Hmmm, not much really interests me.  Looks like a lot of crap and some more of the same.  I would bet that 90% of that will get cancelled.  I'll keep watching the few shows that I already like and that's probably it.

Haha, that is nice.  He even tweaked it right into her face.

Since you just resurrected this thread I might as well give my impressions  of the demo now that I've been able to try it.

Overall I was impressed and enjoyed it.  It took a little bit to get the hang of the FlickIt controls, but not too long.  I did find myself having a bit of wiggle-fever trying to do some moves.  I wish these games had an optional slo-mo bullet time that would engage as soon as you ollie.  My brain just doesn't handle trying to do all those goofy movements in such a short amount of time.

I would prefer to have the push-off buttons be RB and LB so that I could keep my thumbs on the sticks, but I guess that doesn't go with their theme of one finger for each are of the body type thing.  Maybe you can remap them in the full game, but I doubt it.  Stupid EA, it would be easier to change it to that way (Tony Hawk does it).

I can't do manuals for shit, and after trying for a while I don't think I would want to have to rely on those to pass challenges.  Not fun.  Fail.

I kind of liked the low camera, but if they don't have an option for another one, then they are dumb.  I think the overall theme here is that you should let the players play the game how they want and not force all of your ideas on them.

What a tragedy.

Burns died quite some time ago. IIRC it was sometime in the mid or late 90's.

Actually, from wiki:

Quote
Late on Friday, November 25, 2005, four years to the day after winning the World Rally Championship, Burns died at the age of 34, after having been in a coma for some days as a result of a brain tumour.

I thought it would have been odd had his rally game been developed well after his death.

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror is definitely a great game, and you can get it for $15 new at places like Best Buy.  The sequel is coming out in just a few weeks and hopefully it lives up to Dark Mirror.

I think as far as standard civ/sim type games it might be pretty slim pickin's.  Not exactly my genre so don't follow them to much.  Warhammer 40k: Squad Commander looks like a cool turn-based strategy game, and it comes out in November I think.  Maybe also check out Field Commander.

I bought one tonight, the 2000 (I refuse to say slim, since it's not any slimmer) and had a bitch of a time getting it online. Took me an hour. It turned out to be because of the silly text entry system. It uses a phone pad style keyboard to enter text and I was inserting a space after every letter in the WPA key. Took me that long to figure it out. I was getting pissed. So far I love the thing (graphics are 1000x better than the DS, but the DS is by far my most used system), but I am still shocked that they used such a horrible text entry system. Why don't they give you a normal keyboard display to type stuff in?

And Jeane D'Arc is amazing!

Well, it is slimmer.  Something like 20% slimmer and 33% lighter.

I had trouble with that stupid text entry the first few times too, but I kind of got used to it.  I still prefer a regular looking keyboard entry system.  I also believe that there is an alternative key entry system that you can choose, but I'll have to wait until I get home to check on that.
9575  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: How ya use a PSP online? on: September 15, 2007, 05:40:55 AM
The PSP has built-in WiFi and a web browser, so as long as you have access to a wireless network it's all free.  If you don't, then you can either go someplace that has free wifi (like a coffe shop, bookstore, etc) , or get a wireless router for your house I guess.

For demos, music and stuff you can download those on your computer and use a USB cable to dump them to your PSP's memory card, as well as get some stuff from the PSP Spot download stations in certain stores.

Woohoo!  I just got my package back from the repair center and it looks like a brand new 360 for me.  Manufacture date of 8-1-07 and little plastic strip still over the DVD drive.  Unfortunately it doesn't have the HDMI, but even hooked up with component to my new HDTV it looks freaking sweet!  I had to throw in DiRT first thing this morning and it's just spectacular.  The TV was totally worth it.  biggrin  Now to download all of the demos that I've missed over the past month.

Oh, it also came with a 1-month Live card in the box to replace the time I missed.

I'm not sure exactly who the market for Scene It! is.  I can't imagine that any casual or non-gamers would pick up a 360 in order to play a game that they could already play from a regular DVD player, and I'm willing to bet that the majority of the existing 360 audience doesn't have much interest in such a thing and if they do have the casual family/friends that would play something like that they likely already have a Wii and it's plethora of party games.

Fusion Frenzy was a terrible game with a horrible "extreme" design.  They both flopped because they were no good.

I was in GameStop the other day to pick up a pair of used PS2 component cables and stood in line for about 15 minutes waiting for the one clerk to check everybody out as another employee just stood back there behind the counter fiddling with crap and staring into space.  Some kid came up and said "Can I just ask a quick question?" and his response was "Nope, I'm off right now."  This kid just wanted to know if they had Bioshock in stock and he couldn't be bothered to say "yes" or "no".  What a dick.   finger

I returned my original PSP and picked up one of the silver Daxter-pack ones a couple days ago.  So far here are my impressions:

Positives:
+ Surprisingly quite a bit lighter than the old model, more-so than I thought it would be.
+ Less screen ghosting, at least in my initial tests (for example: spinning an ATV around as fast as possible and watching the dark spots that used to really show it).
+ Some load times are improved, especially things like the in-menu vehicle selection in MX vs ATV where it previously had to load each model every time you changed, now it stores them in the new RAM for quicker access.
+ The speakers are in a better place higher up, so my thumbs don't cover them half the time like on the older PSP.
+ The new flatter back plate seems pretty comfortable.
+ The d-pad and buttons seem to have been raised a small amount.
+ The new firmware allows for XMB themes and more varied color schemes.

Not-so-positives
- I'm not a fan of the new smooth backplate, I much prefer the textured one they had before.
- The new UMD loading slot is a bit cheesy and not as nice as the old one.
- Loading times aren't as dramatically improved as you would hope.
- The pack-in game and movie come in crappy little cardboard sleeves.
- Um, I'm not a big fan of Family Guy?

Some people also say the the new screen is brighter, but I don't have my other one to directly compare it to so I can't comment on that.  Chances are, if they were comparing it to a launch PSP screen it may have lost some brilliance over time anyway.

Can't comment on battery life yet, as I haven't done that extensive of testing.

I also don't have the component cables yet so I haven't been able to check it out hooked up to my TV.

One thing though, what about memory leakage? I remember a while back needing to restart the computer every so often because games would become noticeable choppy from memory leakage.

The NT core (Windows NT, 2000, XP...) is pretty good about having segregated memory blocks for each program and they are freed up when that process terminates.  So unless you have a lot of other things running all the time (which you probably shouldn't when trying to play games anyway) you don't have much to worry about since Windows will clean up most of the garbage even if a certain program did have memory leaks.

On the weekend I'll keep it on all day long, but I turn it off when I go to bed.  During the week it's only on when I'm home and/or using it.  Whether it is slightly damaging or more-so than leaving it on for the extra 16 hours, I couldn't say.  I'd like to see some proof one way or another.

Either way, though, it's a hell of a waste of energy to leave it on all day and it warms up my apartment something fierce.

Even something like WoW, which was a huge, open MMO world couldn't hold my interest for much longer than that, and I doubt an action-RPG like this could.  Heck, I'd probably just play this for the single player portion anyway.
9596  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gamefly on: September 12, 2007, 12:34:59 AM
I just tried it again for a couple months and my turn around times were always about a week, which means that if you want to use it to play two games a month, you get each for a week, and then have a week (and weekend) without anything in between.  Wasn't worth it to me since I could just as easily go rent something up the road at Blockbuster and keep it for a couple weeks, even if their selection isn't quite as good.

Also, unlike Netflix, you can't really predict what order your games will come to you so that kind of sucks.
