Even though I like using MS Word (now that I figured out how to use it), I kind of miss the old-school look of Word Perfect, which had white letters on a blue background.

You realize there is a simple option to get that type of display in Word, also, right?  I just went to look and it took me all of 20 seconds to find it.

The reason that the Wii is able to have such perfect backwards compatibility is because it basically has all of the same hardware on the inside as the GameCube, albeit at higher clockspeeds.  The PS3 and XBox 360 have drastically different core CPU, GPU and memory than their predecessors.

You kind of contradict yourself here since, as you note later, Sony does indeed have all of the PS2/PS1 hardware in the PS3 so BC really should be every bit as good as Cube/Wii BC.  There is really no excuse for Sony's BC screwup.

I was just addressing the fact that metallicorphan said "microsft took a half assed look at BC though, while sony,as said just wants to make a dollar".

My point is that the whole of the Wii is basically an overclocked Gamecube with additional memory, while Sony had to actually put in a secondary chipset to support their older games.  The Wii doesn't even have an internal hard drive to which saved games could be transferred, so it makes sense to have them just inserted when needed.

I'm sure Sony is already taking a bath on the inclusion of the PS2 chipsets in the PS3 and I don't think charging an additional $15 is going to kill anybody who wants to transfer over their save games.  It was probably also a solution to their two-platform approach where the cheaper PS3 takes out the extras like memory card support and wifi.

9525  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Microsoft buying Capcom? on: January 14, 2007, 06:20:04 PM
Part of this rumor may have to do with some sort of exclusivity deal between Microsoft and Capcom. The "Rumors" section of the most recent EGM says that Dead Rising 2 has been moved to a 360 exclusive, and if that is the case it likely came with some substantial monetary compensation even if it is only for 6 months or something.

All it takes is for one clueless employee to see that some bigwigs at Capcom and Microsoft have been hammering out some deal and talks of money changing hands to start a rumor of buyouts and crap.

and yet again nintendos wii has no problems.....none with backwards compatible games, and no problems sticking gamecube card slots onto the machine.......MS and sony could of done it as well...we all know this...microsft took a half assed look at BC though, while sony,as said just wants to make a dollar

For the 360, Microsoft would have had to re-license the original XBox chips from nVidia and Intel if they wanted to put that in the 360 and that would have added a further financial burden on a system that was already released at a higher price than consumers were comfortable with.  They decided to go with a software emulation method instead, which allows for higher supported resolutions and anti-aliasing but has been harder to implement for many games and has been far from perfect.

In Sony's case, they own the rights to the previous hardware so, perhaps learning from Microsoft's problems, they have put PS2 chips inside each PS3 until they can get software emulation up to speed and cut out the extra cost per unit (if that ever becomes possible).  Backwards compatibility was also perhaps a larger priority for them because they have a much larger audience to please worldwide and two previous generations of games that those people want to play.

No.  They said Sony could go out of business if it DOES succeed.  They are losing too much money per unit, and they have unexpectedly lost too much money in 2006.

With as huge a company as Sony is, can you imagine what it means unexpectedly to make NO profit in a year?  At least if you know about it in advance, and can plan for it...

So...ok..well, obviously sony knows this, their executives know this, and their financial analysts know this. If this is so, why are they even bothering with the unit? It makes absolutely zero sense for them to release a product thinking that if it succeeds it could bankrupt them. What is the point?

Because of the future potential of both the game console/software as well as getting their proprietary Blu-Ray format to be the default for high definition video discs.  The console itself, judging by the PS1 and PS2, will probably have a life-span of at least seven years in one form or another.  As the costs of producing a PS3 come down they will be able to break even and eventually make money on the hardware sales, while they are still getting licensing payments for game software and Blu-Ray dvd and hardware sales.

They aren't rolling dice to see the big payoff on one product this year, they are betting big on their technology paying dividends in the long run.

I'm not a fan of the first person view for a game like this.  Is Oblivion playable and actually look decent to play in third person?  I think I would mostly be doing melee as that is my general modus operadi for RPGs, and I was seriously disappointed in the character animations I saw in Morrowind.

Yeah, the Players tab is just a list of the most recent players you have played with.  It allows you to see and play with somebody that you just played with but don't want to add to your Friends list yet, or to leave feedback (positive or negative) after you have finished a match/race/etc without having to remember their gamertag exactly.

You can't remove games from the Played Games list.  It is a permanent record of all the games you have played and achievements gained.  The only annoyance I've found is that Arcade demos are listed there even though you can't earn achievements with them.

If wireless 360 controllers weren't so expensive there have been a few times I would have hucked that thing into the wall (General RAAM, looking in your direction).  Thankfully good sense won out, but it would have felt great to do so.

I will continue my run for the title belt in Fight Night 3 on the 360 and playing Ratchet & Clank on on PS2, which I just started.  I usually only play one story-based game at a time, but I will also probably give in and at least try out God of War, Sly Cooper and Okami but I don't want to get too far so that I have forgotten everything when I finally go back to it.

I don't have the Steam version so I'm not really sure what they do it differently with that.  If you tried the demo you would see that as soon as you hit the Flatout2.exe it brings up a window with video and sound options and hitting OK from there launches the game.

I was reading a story in the LA Times yesterday, and it was saying Bush's troop increase would mean changing Pentagon policy and having some soldiers go back for a second tour of duty.  IIRC, the current Pentagon policy is 24 months before a 2nd tour.
I despise the fact that he's sacrificing American soldiers just so he can save some face for his failing plan.

I thought it was 12 months before a second tour, but I'm certainly no expert.

I'm not sure about regular military, but I'm pretty sure the policy he mentioned is regarding the National Guard and Reserves (at least that was the policy I read about).  Here in some info from the Wikipedia:

Quote
Prior to the attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, the National Guard's general policy regarding deployment was that Guardsmen would be required to serve no more than six months overseas at any time. Due to strains placed on active duty units following the attacks, the possible deployment time was increased to 18 months. Additional strains placed on military units as a result of the invasion of Iraq further increased the amount of time a Guardsman could be deployed to 24 months. Current Department of Defense policy is that no Guardsman will be involuntarily activated for a total of more than 24 months (cumulative) in one six year enlistment period (this policy is due to change 1 August 2007, the new policy states that soldiers will be given 24 months between deployments of no more than 24 months, individual states have differing policies).

Yeah, going ahead with this plan means that they will have to extend the tours for some troops that are already there and changing the policy to send Reserves/Guards back for a second tour which they currently can't do.  Even the Generals have said that without changing that policy there aren't enough troops/brigades to send there.

My favorite part is that they created a bipartisan commision whose job was to decide what the best plans of action were, and then completely ignored their recommendations.  That pretty much spells out the Bush administration's mindset.

Congress (and therefore the Democratic majority) are really in a hard place because if they cut the funding it will affect troops that are already there, which they obviously don't want to do.  One thing I've seen mentioned a couple times is that they could cut spending for non-goverment contractors like Halliburton, which could be a partial solution.

The terrible irony of all those "Calving pissing on something" stickers is that Waterson never licensed his characters' likeness for any use (T-shirts, coffee mugs, stickers, etc) because he didn't want to cash in and dilute and undermine his artistic property.  And then it gets stolen over and over and used by retarded rednecks on their pick-up trucks.
