I don't see the Bluray 2.0 spec as being any big deal.  All it brings to the table is web interactivity features which I could care less about.  I'm hard pressed to think of that as anything but gimmicky.  Any 1.1 compatible player will do a great job at playing back movies and can also do the cool picture in picture stuff like Warner used on the 300 HD-DVD.

I don't get it, how can they update players that are already sold to consumers?  Are people spending $400 for players that won't be able to work with discs in 6 mos?

Firmware updates. The software on the Blu-Ray player I have was an old version when I got it. I downloaded the update off the Sony website, burned it to a disk, and updated the player to a newer version (went from 2.5 to 3.7). I believe the newest players can be hooked up directly to the internet for those downloads.

I may be wrong but I think the PS3 is the only current player that can be updated via firmware to 2.0.  As I understand it, the 2.0 spec requires 1 Gig of onboard RAM while the current players only have the 300+ megs that are required by 1.1.

Well the PS3 has only a total of 512MB RAM (including video memory) so it doesn't seem to even fit that standard unless they use some sort of virtual memory for whatever that feature is.

There are a few I would like to play on both platforms.  Probably more on the 360, which is good since that is what I have, but neither is overwhelmingly loaded from my perspective.

So Illusion Softworks, makers of the awesome Mafia, Vietcong, H&D and working on Mafia II, have now been acquired by Take-Two and renamed 2K Czech.  (pun intended?)  Anyway, I saw the press release over here

(I put this in Console Games because Mafia II is being developed for consoles, and more people just plain read and comment here)

Well I didn't buy the 360 because I had interest in Japanese RPG's.  That's like buying a Mini Cooper because you're interested in offroading.  Not that having them there hurts the platform, but if that's your major thing you should look into a PlayStation, you know?  How many RPG's are on the freaking Wii?  How many good shooters?  Or driving games?

So, is this a DoS, or is it the massive influx of gamers from Christmas? If its the latter, while it sucks for our playing games, it must mean rather staggering sales for MS.

As was said by someone earlier, it's hard to believe that there are really that many more people trying to play on Live right now than there were when Halo 3 was released.  However, I thought the DoS attack thing was also debunked.

Personally, I think no matter what the problem is, they would be better off being a bit more transparent and communicate exactly what they are doing.

I thought it was a great game so I lean towards "keep it, open it, and play the shite out of it"!  Plus, I tend to have a problem being dishonest, even if it's towards a large corporation I don't necessarily like.  But mostly because that game kicks ass.

For those of you playing Guild Wars, do you feel like you can solo PVE stuff enough to make it worthwhile?  I don't really do any PVP and I tend to play solo for the most part; my impression from the demos and that of people who played it before was that GW wasn't really focused on that.

I'm curious, what aspect of the controls did you find clunky?  The only thing I don't like about it is clicking the left stick to run/slow-walk, but you do that rarely enough that I don't mind too much.  It seemed like a very adequate and responsive control scheme for a 3rd person shooter.

Now there's no reason a PSP owner should pass Patapon up.

That's awesome.  VERY cool.

That is great, because I probably would have waited until it hit that price anyway.  I'm much more willing to take a chance on a $20 game than a $40 one.

Can someone explain how unlocking works (with no cheats)?  Are unlocks for local band/solo tour not shared?  Do you have to play at higher difficulties to unlock some songs?

I got to a point in local band play where I wasn't getting anything new.  It appeared that I have played everything at least once.

I think on the easiest difficulty in a solo tour you only get access to 37 of the 58 songs, but Medium or higher difficulties you can unlock all of the songs.

The next OXM (January 15) will have three exclusive Rock Band songs:

* Freezepop — "Sprøde"

* Bang Camaro — "Rock Rebellion"

* Count Zero — "Shake"

Also, I missed Conan, anyone see him play Rock Band last night?

I have heard of none of those...

This is one of the major reasons I mostly avoid playing games on Live.  I much prefer to play something like Team Fortress 2 on the PC where not everybody has or uses a microphone.  It's usually much more civil, or at least quieter.

I also got sick of people getting all pissed off when I was new to a game and didn't know the map or exactly what to do.  Not very newbie friendly environment at all.

9557  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Anyone try the Kane and Lynch Demo on Live on: January 01, 2008, 05:17:58 PM
Well, after seeing the game on sale this week and Knightshade playing it on Live (mostly likely for review, but I can pretend it was for fun) I went out and picked it up with a BB gift card I had.

So far I have to say that I like it quite a bit.  The gameplay mechanics are the same as the demo, although there are some things I didn't realize I could do before.  For example, if you get next to a teammate and pull up your inventory (click right stick) it will also bring up theirs so you can give/take/swap weapons with them.  You can also do silent hand-to-hand take-downs by walking up to a guy and hitting 'A', which is useful when trying to not alert other enemies.  Your AI teammates are actually not total retards for once, but you can give them quick orders if you'd like to have them defend, follow or attack your target.  If you stick close to them they can revive you with an adrenaline shot if you go down, and you can do the same for them (although they rarely get killed).

The graphics are not "next gen" by any means, but they are serviceable and pretty good considering all the bullet holes and destructibility in the levels.  It's a more understated "soft" style than something like Stranglehold, but I don't think it looks any worse as a whole and the levels are less cluttered.  The effects while in tear gas and such are kind of cool.  Also, the nightclub level is quite cool in a disorienting, claustrophobic way.  With the crazy lights and all those people in there you get paranoid that one of the guards got behind you (and they probably did if you weren't careful).

The story has turned out to be a little better than I was expecting, other than some mediocre dialog and stuff (especially involving Lynch's blackouts).  There is still an abundance of swearing, but only really in those scenes so not while acutally playing the game for the most part.

The only big downside so far is that there seem to be points where things just get a bit difficult for me and I die about 10 times and have to restart the 'scene' (there are frequent save checkpoints).  That can usually be overcome by switching up your tactics a little, but it can be frustrating.  Unlike COD4, if you want to take your time and kill the enemies one at a time instead of rushing at them, it is a valid way to play and the cover mechanic supports that.

I'm guessing KD will be writing a review for the site soon enough, but if you enjoyed the demo you should give the game a rent because I think it's better than the hype/hate made it seem.  A bit of a spiritual successor to the gameplay of Freedom Fighters mixed with a heist movie like Heat.  These are good things.

Wall-E looks like it could be pretty good, even if he looks way too much like Johnny-5.
