9481  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]Gears of War-Impressions on: November 13, 2006, 06:47:57 PM
One move I would like to see in a future game is a roll-over move, where if I am hunkered against a concrete barrier or whatever I can hit this move and quickly hop/roll over the top and take cover on the other side now facing the opposite direction.  It's frustrating to hop over it and then get turned around and holding 'A' trying to take cover again.  Plus, there were times I would be running around to flank and accidentally ran into a barrier so took cover but my back was to the enemy and they wasted me before I could get out of there or return fire.

Also, I really dislike the delay between hitting 'A' and starting your run or taking cover.  It should be nearly instantaneous.
9482  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gears of War MP server disconnections: this seems to work on: November 13, 2006, 06:37:39 PM
Well I know I have certainly been having trouble trying to connect to Quick Match games.  I tried that 'X' thing a bit last night but never saw the server list in the background.  Maybe I just didn't hit it enough times or something.

Anyway, thanks for the tips!
9483  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Recap 13/Nov/06 on: November 13, 2006, 06:24:45 PM
I played Gears of War and surprisingly only that.  I beat it on Casual and then tried out a few online games on Sunday.  Unfortunately, I was struck with constant problems trying to connect to open games.

This is the first time I've tried playing on Live for a couple years so I don't know if it's a problem with my connection, crappy matchmaking or just overloaded games on this busy weekend.  It would do the searching thing for a while (a little too long) and then it would bring up a server for me to connect to and nearly every time I tried to join it would say it couldn't connect to the server or some crap.  Pretty frustrating.  I did get through on a couple of them and later on I played a couple games with some GT cats and that was fun.

They may not have had any problems, but it is a known issue and is in Sony's database as reported.  Some of the problems have been fixed with the initial system update and hopefully they can iron out the rest or most of them in future updates.

If I had known I had a PS-3 I probably would have gotten Tony Hawk 8 for it but that is in the mail for the 360 atm.  Sheesh what a backorder of games.

Well, that one is sort of a no-win situation, since the PS3 has the tilt available for grinds and tricks, but the 360 is the one with the online portion.

As for me, I'm not picking up anything this week other than Christmas gifts for my family.

Thanks for the tips, papa!  Thankfully, I did finally beat that mofo!  I don't think I would even attempt that on a harder difficulty.  One of my problems was that sometimes even if I was in the light (like behind that first barricade) the damn bats would still attack me and obviously end me.  It may have been because I was standing up or something, but I was still in the damn light!

It also helped when I just gave up on trying to keep Dom alive.  That guy is a tard sometimes.

Am I the only one who is sick and tired of the Tony Hawk games? I tried the demo, but it felt like more of the same.

I had a pretty similar reaction to the demo.  For some reason I was expecting a reinvention of the series when it was more like one step further with a new trick.  That's great if that's what you're looking for, I just burned out on the game and it's mechanics a while ago.  Not to mention my skills just aren't up to linking a billion tricks together without bailing.

If you are into that sort of thing, the Game With Fame thing with Dave Mustaine of Megadeth starts in less than a half hour and the Epic guys start at 4pm Pacific.  Details in that first link of the original post.

I haven't even tried the multiplayer yet (although I did finally get Live Gold), so no way in hell I'd attempt to hold my own against the Epic guys.

I really don't like how they are going the route of throwing more and more villians in each movie.  It gets to the point where what little story they have becomes a joke.  I mean, these characters have years of storylines they can mine for backstory and filler and stuff, why cram them in to use as throwaway enemies?

To me the GamerPic is a bit too dark to see well on the console, but it looks decent when seen on xbox.com so that may be my VGA connection or something.  The theme looks nice but I'm not too big on having backgrounds on the console.

9499  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: October Hardware Sales on: November 12, 2006, 04:31:40 PM
Yeah, I think between the second wave of bigger 360 games hitting and the holidays coming up their sales should improve quite a bit for a couple months at least.  It will be interesting to see if they can catch a broader audience this season.

I have no doubt that Sony will be able to sell every one of the consoles that they ship.  I just really hope they don't have serious first-run problems like the PS2, XBox and 360 have had.  For some reason I have a sense of impending doom (or maybe this is Operation Impending Doom II icon_wink) that we will be seeing large quantities of failing hardware in six or eight months.  Those sorts of problems are not good for consumers or the gaming industry as a whole.

9501  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Savage 2 going persistant. on: November 12, 2006, 04:16:58 PM
Yes, I did preorder and no I didn't get a gift.  Bummer.  I checked the forum and at least a couple other people had the same problem so I PM'd the S2 rep about it.  I'm not too worried since beta hasn't launched yet.

The spelling error is right below the Karma Points icon on the right side, it says "Unpsent Points".  As I meant to say, I checked the site and the truncated "P" in "Points" was just an artifact of the compression in the image you posted.

Here is a little info about the Karma points posted in their forums today:

Quote
Karma is automatically earned in the game by doing "good" deeds. We don't have a complete listing yet, but things like healing, following orders, spending time near your squads officer, etc...

Karma is also automatically removed for doing other things. These include cussing multiple times in a match as well as other factors, some of which we're still trying to define.

Finally, for every x hours of game time you receive a KP (Karma Point) to spend. This KP can be used to give a very pleasant, team oriented player a point or it can be used to take away a KP from someone who is being a total jerk. Also realize that Karma will extend onto the forums as well. We are going to tie all Savage 2 accounts with the forum accounts (an update coming in a couple of weeks). However, realize that taking away Karma from another player will result in a 1/2 point being removed from your Karma. We've chosen to do this to stop people from just punishing the bad and not rewarding the good.

Lastly all Karma history for each player will be logged and viewable on any players profile  icon_smile This includes Karma given and taken by that player and TO that player.
9502  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Savage 2 going persistant. on: November 12, 2006, 06:03:26 AM
Heh, I just checked the site for myself and saw the truncation of the "P".

On their front page it says "If you have pre ordered, you can log-in at the top of the page for a small reward of our appreciation."  I logged in and saw the screen you are showing, but I didn't get any reward.  Unless they are talking about being able to check that screen out.
9503  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Got a 360...now i need 1 game recommendation!! on: November 12, 2006, 05:55:24 AM
Yeah, if you are into racing games you would get plenty of playtime out of Project Gotham Racing 3 or NFS: Most Wanted for half the price of a new game.  I enjoyed Kameo quite a bit and there is a good amount of playtime in that one.  One of my favorite games so far, and certainly my most played, would have to be Just Cause.

I think it is sort of hard to give advice without knowing what sort of games you like.  What have you really liked on previous systems?
9504  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Savage 2 going persistant. on: November 12, 2006, 05:46:29 AM
This should be interesting to see more about the Karma and Item Vault stuff.  I have to admit that the second thing I saw on that first screen was the spelling of "Unpsent Points".  Minor quibble.

I like the idea of the refer a friend scratch-off tickets.  Hopefully they are well balanced within the game.

I'm really interested in seeing this one.  I think I may go see it Monday since I took the day off work and the theater should be a bit less crowded then (I hate loud, crowded theaters).

If you like a different side of Will Ferrell, try renting Winter Passing.  He is different but equally funny in a quirky way in that one.

Sorry if this is a bit off, I don't actually own the game yet.  I see a bit of complaining about the party AI and controls and such, I thought this was mostly a single character game.  Am I wrong?  I've never been big on trying to control a bunch of characters and I think that would kill the game for me, especially if the AI is bad and you have to manually control everybody.

I'm not positive about that one, but I would think that as long as they haven't registered the serial number online with their gamertag, name and address it would be fine.  I can't find any specific information about this on the xbox.com site and they are very vague even about what the "limited time offer" is when you can sign up for it.  I think your best bet may be to call MS yourself (1-800-4MY-XBOX) and see if it would be a problem.

Apologies if this was mentioned earlier, but has anyone run GoW using the VGA connector to a monitor? Any problems? I'd love to get it, but until they release a demo I'm leery of any VGA problems.

Evidently there is an aspect ratio problem if you are using the VGA adapter and a 4:3 monitor.  I expect it will be patched but no ETA as far as I know.

I mentioned this above a ways, but like Kevin said, at resolutions above 640x480 it squishes the screen into a double widescreen thing just like Lego Star Wars 2 does.  And, like that game (and PGR3) don't expect to see this officially acknowledged, let alone patched any time soon.  I am seriously frustrated at the lack of support on these issues.

I have three days with nearly nothing to do so I will be slogging my way through Gears of War and undoubtedly playing more BF2142.  It is ironic that the game I didn't want to buy in the first place (BF) is getting more time and giving me more fun than Gears which I have been anticipating for quite a while.  C'est la vie.
9518  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]Gears of War-Impressions on: November 10, 2006, 03:59:45 PM
So far I have to say that I'm not all that impressed with what I have played of the single player.  Don't get me wrong, it's is very beautiful and seems pretty polished and such, but it just seems like another shooter.  Maybe it's because I've just been playing other ones like Black and F.E.A.R., but the one thing I notice is that hardly anything can be shot-up or destroyed.

I also don't like how there is the delay between when you hit the 'A' button and when your guy actually does something.  You have to hold it down just to start running, or just to take cover.  Something tells me that if they had just had seperate buttons for a couple actions it would have worked out a bit better.  I also dislike how the "roadie run" makes you pretty much go in a straight line.  Are you telling me that just because he is moving forward a little faster he can't turn?  Is he a fucking tank?

I guess it comes down to the fact that I was really excited to play the game and now that I have it I don't find myself drawn back to it.  That is the halmark of a great game to me, and this just isn't doing it.  I'm sure I will keep playing a bit this weekend, but I can't say I'm too happy with my $60 purchase so far.

January 30th for home users, this month for businesses.

Since they abandoned the new file system and such I can't see any real reason to upgrade.  I was hoping for increases in performance and efficiency and for the most part all it seems like is an interface overhaul.  I honestly don't give a shit about a useless 3D GUI if all it is going to do is take up more resources and slow my system down.
