9441  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Company of Heroes - $20 on: November 19, 2006, 09:56:51 PM
I just saw this on the back page of this week's Best Buy ad.  An incredible deal for what has been hailed as one of the best PC games released this year (although I haven't actually bought it yet...).

In the same ad for $19.99 they have Civ 4 and some 360 Platinum hits: PGR3, NFS: Most Wanted, Kameo and Perfect Dark: Zero.  They also have a 60-day subscription to WoW for $19.99 and The Sims 2 Pets for $12.99.

EDIT: A note to mention that these prices are only good up through Wednesday because of Thanksgiving and the following 2-day sales.
9442  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PS3 - totally missing from ads - Wii everywhere on: November 19, 2006, 09:34:21 PM
I think the reason the PS3 isn't in most ads (or any, from what was with my Sunday Paper) is because it was on the cover for most of last week's, and the Wii is just launching today so it gets the cover.

That isn't to say that they shouldn't at least have games and accessories inside with the other console stuff, but maybe they just figured that if they sold out of PS3s as planned it is better not to advertise for something they won't have in stock.
9443  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I am playing with my Wii now :) who else has it? on: November 19, 2006, 09:02:58 PM
I think the thing with the numeric code is that it allows each console to set up it's account while still letting all the little Johnnies and Sallies out there to still use their real name (or chosen name) for their Mii without having to do something like "J0hnnY3GT" so that it can be unique.  They are going after a broader market set than XBox Live and PS3 and kids and parents might not understand why they should have to do that.
9444  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Prestige movie looks awesome on: November 19, 2006, 08:37:33 PM
So I finally got around to seeing this one last night and while I did really enjoy it, I couldn't believe the major deviations from the book.  It was like they took five main ideas from the book and then rewrote everything around them.  I liked how the movie played out and I think the dramatic tension and payoff was perfect for a movie, but they stripped out and/or changed so much that it was hard to discuss it with my friend who hasn't read the book yet.
9445  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Finally after weeks of waiting I finally have it!!!!!!!! on: November 19, 2006, 07:54:54 PM
So are all of these available now or are they only selling one title at a time like I remember used to happen with toys in Happy Meal type things?
9446  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: pgr3 on: November 19, 2006, 06:35:01 AM
I was thinking of pulling out PGR3 again, but I would never be competitive in a tournament.  I'd get knocked out before the starting flag.  I probably wouldn't even be competitive if the only other contestants were the people in this thread.  icon_wink

If they had options for a decent save system and killing the timed thing I would have been all over this.  Unfortunately that was a no go.

Still waiting for them to refund my MS points so I can rebuy all my Arcade titles.  It's been a few weeks, three I think, and last night they added 490 to my new silver account.  I can only guess they do them in some odd increment because I'm pretty sure 490 points won't cover the dozen Live Arcade games I bought.

I understand why they did this, to avoid just copying your games for you friends, but I don't have to like it.

Those games should be tied to your account...can't you just re-download them?

Ouch, Wii isn't faring well outside of Zelda, and rumors are, the GameCube version controls better anyway.

Once again, I honestly believe the Wii is different enough from the GameCube to ever be a giant success.

I beg to differ

I also think the poor scores for Excite Truck may be unwarranted. An Opposing viewpoint from Tom Chick on Yahoo
Chick only likes Excite Truck since it's from the same developers as the abysmal Test Drive: Eve of Destruction, which was reviled for the shoddy piece of crap it was by everyone but Tom.

He has his brain farts -- this obsession with shitty racers being the most recent in the long decline which began with him panning Deus Ex.

I enjoyed Test Drive: EoD, and I know a couple other people around these parts did, too.

Excite Truck looks like a very different kind of game and not my style at all.  I haven't played it, but from the videos it looks very arcadey, with the truck pivoting on a central axis and just sliding all over hell with no real friction.  It seems to also have been roundly knocked for being pretty shallow with not many tracks or other options.

I must be gettin old.... I used to be on top of things in the gaming world, but I have to say, I have no clue what the Wii is?? retard  I saw a commercial this afternoon about it being Nintendo related, but I still haven't checked it out.  And something else, these damn systems are getting too pricey for my taste...   icon_frown

The Wii is only $249.

Heh, only $250.  That's still $50 more than the Cube launched for. Remember last gen when everybody was waiting until the PS2/Xbox prices dropped down from launch prices of $300?  Now that is considered a sweet deal for a 360 and the PS3 probably won't hit that price for a couple years.

9453  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: XBOX 360 HD-DVD Add-On Impressions on: November 18, 2006, 04:22:09 PM
Taken from some Wikipedia articles:

In terms of major studios, HD DVD is currently exclusively backed by Universal Studios and The Weinstein Company (through Genius Products) and is non-exclusively backed by Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., New Line, HBO, DreamWorks, Image Entertainment, Magnolia Pictures, Brentwood Home Video, Warner Music Group, Ryko, Goldhil Entertainment, and Studio Canal.

There are some important studios there, but only two are exclusive and you will also notice a lack of others that support only Blu-Ray so far (such as Sony's labels, obviously, and Disney/Pixar)

The good news for those of us who like to use our powers for awesome (destruction)...the full game apparently has a mode that allows you to play the Bizzaro version so you can go nuts on Metropolis.  Not that I will ever buy this game, it seems like it would have been mediocre at best a few years ago.
9455  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Prediction - the sixaxis will be redesigned within six months on: November 18, 2006, 05:44:23 AM
The funny thing is that their original "boomerang" style was kind of similar to Microsoft's Sidewinder Freestyle Pro that they released for the PC a number of years back.  And that one actually contained the tilt-sensing stuff (but didn't have dual analog sticks, since that wasn't the norm back then).  The world is a weird, backwards place.

I can't believe they didn't at least move the left analog stick into it's proper spot since we are no longer in the days of PS1 and it is the main control used.  Dillholes.

Yeah, I really can't believe how awful GT Pro looks.  It almost looks like an N64 game that got ported (badly) to GameCube or something. And it's coming from Ubisoft, which usually doesn't put out pure shit.

I was just by my local Best Buy and sitting outside were about 15 lawn chairs with numbers on them and nobody sitting in them.  I'm thinking either the store set them up and nobody is waiting yet, or maybe people just decided that it was too cold, rainy and windy to sit outside for another two days and left their chairs there.  A little odd, either way.

There's also the double-disc SE of The Green Mile which shall find itself upon my Christmas list tootsweet. For those of you into giant monkeys, the LOTR-style EE of King Kong hits as well. If anyone can explain to my as to why a giant ape story deserves a four hour film then kudos to you. The original version clocked in at a lean 100 minutes and it remains one of the best films ever. Peter Jackson's love-fest to the big guy? Not so much.

I agree.  I thought the new version was too long and full of unnecessary special effects and crap as it was, I can't imagine why they need to add 38 minutes more of that.   saywhat

I think I'll be adding Who Killed The Electric Car to my queue and that's about it.

9476  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]Gears of War-Impressions on: November 13, 2006, 06:47:57 PM
One move I would like to see in a future game is a roll-over move, where if I am hunkered against a concrete barrier or whatever I can hit this move and quickly hop/roll over the top and take cover on the other side now facing the opposite direction.  It's frustrating to hop over it and then get turned around and holding 'A' trying to take cover again.  Plus, there were times I would be running around to flank and accidentally ran into a barrier so took cover but my back was to the enemy and they wasted me before I could get out of there or return fire.

Also, I really dislike the delay between hitting 'A' and starting your run or taking cover.  It should be nearly instantaneous.
9477  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gears of War MP server disconnections: this seems to work on: November 13, 2006, 06:37:39 PM
Well I know I have certainly been having trouble trying to connect to Quick Match games.  I tried that 'X' thing a bit last night but never saw the server list in the background.  Maybe I just didn't hit it enough times or something.

Anyway, thanks for the tips!

I played Gears of War and surprisingly only that.  I beat it on Casual and then tried out a few online games on Sunday.  Unfortunately, I was struck with constant problems trying to connect to open games.

This is the first time I've tried playing on Live for a couple years so I don't know if it's a problem with my connection, crappy matchmaking or just overloaded games on this busy weekend.  It would do the searching thing for a while (a little too long) and then it would bring up a server for me to connect to and nearly every time I tried to join it would say it couldn't connect to the server or some crap.  Pretty frustrating.  I did get through on a couple of them and later on I played a couple games with some GT cats and that was fun.

They may not have had any problems, but it is a known issue and is in Sony's database as reported.  Some of the problems have been fixed with the initial system update and hopefully they can iron out the rest or most of them in future updates.

If I had known I had a PS-3 I probably would have gotten Tony Hawk 8 for it but that is in the mail for the 360 atm.  Sheesh what a backorder of games.

Well, that one is sort of a no-win situation, since the PS3 has the tilt available for grinds and tricks, but the 360 is the one with the online portion.

As for me, I'm not picking up anything this week other than Christmas gifts for my family.
