I could be wrong, but I really think that if they don't relaunch the 20GB skew (or some other lower price alternative to the 60) that they are making a terrible mistake caused by misreading the buying patterns of the early adopters...anyone agree/disagree?

I don't think they ever intended the 20GB model to be produced or sold in large volumes, but created it as a marketing tactic so that they could say they also have a $500 model and were giving consumers a choice.  Even after it has supposedly been discontinued, most people will continue to think that there is always the chance at a cheaper option.

Maybe they are intending to relaunch an additional model later this year before the holidays or something, but if not then I agree that it will be a mistake to not appeal to what a large number of consumers want.
9364  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 360 wireless accessory adapter - thoughts on: April 08, 2007, 06:06:32 PM
Ouch, sorry to hear you had such a crappy experience with the adapter.  Did you update the driver software?  For info, I also have a Logitech mouse (MX510) and didn't see any sort of problems with that, but I run a Microsoft keyboard through the PS/2 port.

As for Marvel:UA not detecting the controls right, that sounds more like a problem with the game than the controller.  The triggers are the Z-Axis (right is positive, left is negative) so as long as it supports correct detection/use of that axis it should be fine.  If they game doesn't correctly detect/use those, it's not exactly the controller or adapter's fault.  On Activision's support page they list some stuff for solving gamepad problems with M:UA:

Download and install the latest software for the game controller from the manufacturer's website.

If multiple controllers are present it is advised to remove all but the one intended for use in the game.

Make sure the controller/joystick is setup properly in Windows.

If you are using a USB game controller under Windows XP disable some power management features.
1) Right-click My Computer and select properties.
2) Click Hardware, then Device Manager.
3) Expand the USB Controllers Branch.
4) Double-click on the USB Root Hub.
5) Under settings, click Power Management.
6) Uncheck the option which says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

Considering the game doesn't even support more than two mouse buttons or adjusting mouse sensitivity, that is a signal to me that it was a bit of a shoddy port.  Of course that doesn't make things any better for you and your gamepad, but it seems like rushed judgement to blame the hardware for something that may be the application's fault.

Plus, I got the slim version to boot.

The slim PS2 was so sexy- I wonder if it would even be possible to slim down the PS3 like that.

To a certain extent perhaps, but no where near that size. It has multiple CPU cores, an internal power supply, a blu ray drive (the standalone players are huge right now too), cooling fans, and right now PS2 and PS1 hardware. I'm sure it could be a tad smaller, but I doubt it could be slimmed that much.

Not to mention the hard drive, which takes up some room.

Reading the entire article it looks like it is only the 95055 Guitar, but they have seen it in boxes with 95065

They are saying to look on the back of the guitar only, if it says 95055 then it is most likely defective

Not exactly: "Over at sister site Xbox 360 Fanboy, where they received a broken controller, they had a 95067 (that is not a typo) box with a 95065 guitar inside. At this point Red Octane acknowledges "defective" models as 95065 and 95055."
9369  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Defective Guitar Hero II [360] guitars on: April 07, 2007, 04:57:39 PM
Apparently Red Octane has acknowledged that two models (95065 and 95055) of the XBox 360 guitar are defective and users are told to exchange them for a different model.

I don't even have the game, but I know quite a few here do and some were mentioning trouble with their guitars.

I want to see this.  It looks like a fun flick.

Anyone know if they throw an intermission in there?  I really love a lot of the longer films (like Return of the King), but around that last 30-60 min my butt or legs really start hurting from being in the seat for so long.  I'm pretty fidgety anyway, but that really pushes my limits.

The whole project gives a nod to the cinema experience of the period, including an intermission between the two "features", but the "trailers" during the intermission are collaborations with other filmmakers in or near the genre to keep the flavor of the whole experience moving. Rob Zombie was one creator that I heard mentioned, i think there are at least two other trailers.

You can see the one from Eli Roth (warning: NSFW due to blood, nudity, and disturbing stuff) who directed Hostel.  Shaun of the Dead's Edgar Wright also directed one, as well as one by Rodriguez and then Zombie as already mentioned.

You might want to also try a program such as HijackThis.  Yes, the site looks dated and ghetto, but it's real enough.  There is a guide/tutorial on the site to show you what the codes in the scan are and how to use them (you would probably look for the 04 Autoloading programs).

Just be aware that most of what you see will be valid programs and registry entries, so delete at your own risk but it does make automatic backups and you can restore those in the Config section.

You can also save log files and upload them to a tech forum for help if you don't feel comfortable making deletes with the information given in the program.

I had to go to Circuit City to pick mine up (it was in their ad circular last week) but when I checked GameStop/EB's website it showed the three near me all had 1-3 in stock (with no more on order...) but I've never seen them in there.  I'm almost positive Best Buy near me used to have them back in the PC Games section, but they don't anymore and I can't even find it on their website.

It just means that with the new text chat feature you can chat with up to six friends while you are playing games or watching movies.

Ouch.  Make sure you have adequate air-flow around the console and power supply brick, and don't set the brick right near the console.  And of course make sure all the connections are tight and such.
9376  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 360 wireless accessory adapter - thoughts on: April 07, 2007, 04:34:49 AM
Last weekend I picked up one of these USB adapters to allow me to use XBox 360 accessories on my PC, mostly for analog controls in driving games.  Here are my thoughts on the experience so far:

Install - This was about as easy and painless as can be expected.  Put in the CD, install drivers/program, then plug in USB adapter.  You should use the built in Update function to update the drivers before you start since the most recent don't ship with it.  I think I had to restart the computer after that update.

Controller Setup - I didn't have to calibrate my 360 gamepad at all, I just hit the sync button on the adapter and the sync on my controller and it worked right off the bat.  If things seem a bit off, you can test and calibrate it in the Game Controllers utility from the Control Panel.

Games - So far I have only tried the 360 gamepad on racing games, but it has worked great in each one.  I've played the FlatOut 2 demo and full game, the XPand Rally Xtreme demo and TrackMania Nations.  The only real problem is that TrackMania Nations didn't allow me to configure my controller so I was stuck using the A and B buttons to accelerate/brake.  Boo.  The other two allow for assigning of buttons/axes to actions so you can play as you wish and adjust deadzones, sensitivity and such.  It all comes down to the individual game's support and controller customization, and as long as it has the options things are good.

Problems - First off, you have to power on the controller before you start a game or it may not detect that controller.  Not a big deal, but I've had to restart games a few times because I forgot that detail.  Also, you can hit the guide button to get a readout of the controller battery life from the desktop, but if you're in a fullscreen game you're out of luck because that little display won't show.  In addition, you can't hold the guide button to shut down the controller, you have to let it sit for 10 minutes or pop the battery pack out to turn it off.  Again, not really big deals but it illustrates little differences between playing on a console and PC.  Oh, and the first time you power on the controller to sync it with the PC you will probably turn on your 360, too.  Mildly annoying.

Overall - Basically it just worked, and that's what I wanted.  If you already have a wireless XBox 360 controller, you know it's one of the best gamepads out there so being able to use in with PC games (and not having to buy a separate wired controller) is really nice.  I give the adapter a big thumbs up, with the caveat that I've only tried the wireless XBox 360 gamepad and not the wireless headset, racing wheel or anything else.  So long, arrow-key carpal tunnel!   thumbsup

Jeez, Starshifter, I don't know what to say.  I've only been trying to mention the game in every thread I contributed to for the last couple weeks.  slywink

I finished all 53 missions on both Easy and Normal this weekend by playing each level twice as I went through.  That allowed me to get some extra health built up and unlock the weapons as I moved my way along.  About half-way through I went back and did some of the Hard ones and unlocked some cool weapons that were quite helpful.  I think I have about 90 of the 170 unlocked right now.

Despite the fact that some of the later grenades do insane amounts of damage (like 2500) I never found them too useful.  I would much rather use a grenade launcher that allows me to aim better and faster, and shoot ten shots in a row even if they are much weaker.  Some of the heat-seeking swarm missles are pretty helpful, too.  The special ricochet rifles are really nice in the tunnels.  Buf of course it all depends on how you play and what you like, and there's a plethora of choices in that regard.

Silent Hill Origins
God of War PSP
Gran Turismo 4 Mobile

It has more promise than the DS this upcoming year, to be honest.  And even though Final Fantasy Tactics looks hawt on the DS, you've got Jeanne d'Arc and Disgaea Portable which could easily trump FFT as the best SRPG on a handheld this year.

Well, to be honest there isn't anything in that list that would make it a must-buy for me.  Obviously the JRPGs have a crowd, but I am not among them.

I kind of enjoyed God of War, but not enough to finish it or buy the second one yet.  I like driving games, but the Gran Tourismo series has always seemed so...sterile and anemic to me.  I'd rather be tweaking the dirt roads in a rally game or balls-out in Burnout or something.

The Bigs conjured up some ideas that might have promise...until I saw that it was a baseball game.

I guess there's a reason I don't own one already.  I am no longer their target market.

Then I picked up one of these wireless 360 accessory receiver thingies and saw how well it worked for playing the FlatOut 2 demo, so I proceeded to download Flatout 2 via Steam.  And then run into constant problems and not even be able to get the game running.  That may be the last non-Valve thing I purchase from Steam.

Hey, welcome to the club!

If you are interested in picking up a Charge and Play kit and a second controller, Circuit City currently has a bundle for the Premium console, a second MS wireless controller, Gears of War and the Charge and Play thing for $490.  Not a bad deal if you would buy that stuff anyway.

I've enjoyed every game I have on the 360 so far, stuff like Crackdown, Saints Row, Just Cause, PGR3, Fight Night 3, Kameo, and Earth Defense Force.  I would suggest you try out the demo downloads on the Marketplace so you can try out some of them firsthand.
