OK.  Educate the not-so-technically-minded:

An HD-DVD will not run in my ps3... correct?

I would need the movie to be made in blu-ray format - which it is not... correct?

Thanks for all the advice, guys.  I think I will grab one of those Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS models since they are on sale at Best Buy this week and I can always return it there if it doesn't work out for me.  I'm not sure I'd feel too comfortable running a third party firmware in it since my main concern is Live compatibility, so I may just get the GS even though it's $20 more.

D-Link's DGL-4300 looks pretty cool, AtomicKid, but I just can't see spending over $100 on it when my main connections will still be wired.

I'm not a big Street Fighter fan (I think they've basically run it into the ground several times over), but if they could get the new game to look like that video that would be super freaking awesome.

I think they would have been better off going for something of a Metallica vibe.  I'm not a bit Metallica fan, but I would consider their early stuff much better than Dio anyday.
9366  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: So my Samsung 5 yr old HDTV died on me last night on: October 17, 2007, 04:22:04 PM
I bought a 32" Insignia at Best Buy about a month ago when it was on sale for $499 and I have been very pleased with it.  Regular price is $599, but I'd bet that it might go on sale again by black Friday.  This is the second model of the 32" Insignia NS-LCD32 and I've read nothing but good impressions about it (I think the first silver version was a bit flaky).  It may not be as super as some of the higher end ones, but for $500 it's less than half the price my parents paid for their Samsung and I don't have a single complaint.

If you are a Rewards memeber, the $500 pricetag will also get you $10 back in coupons, and if you have one of the 10 or 12% off coupons that can save you money up front.

I don't give a crap how good it is when you're playing with a developer as the second character, I'm going to be playing it by myself in my house and it played like shit.  If this is EA's idea of good AI and single player handling of a coop situation, god help us with Army of Two!

I will probably still end up getting this just because I'm a huge Simpsons fan, but I'm going to hate myself for it.

Finally got mine from FedEx today.  The package and Zune say Refurbished on them, but the unit is in near mint condition and comes in the standard package with all the goodies like a regular retail product.  Now I just need to figure out this silly Zune software and such.

I'm assuming the topic is supposed to read "Perfect Dark Zero 2" rather than "Project".

I know in an interview with Rare they said that they might not have been all that pleased with PDZ, but it was an absolute deadline for them to ship on 360 launch.  And looking at their history you can see that they don't necessarily do deadlines.

9377  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Zune 30GB for $99 on: October 15, 2007, 09:17:55 AM
That is the current deal over at Woot.com.  You can choose between black, white or brown.

Worth noting is the fact that Microsoft has said that when the new Zune is released they will fully support these older models upgrading to the new firmware to get all the new functionality (minus the new zippy touchpad thing, of course).

I ordered one when they had the deal last weekend with only the black models and it should be arriving tomorrow.  Reports from people that have already received theirs are that the units are still in sealed retail packaging even though it says factory refurbished.  Possible they are clearing them out before the new models hit in November.  Either way you get the full 1 year warranty.

MechAssault2 : better story than MechAssault 1, and because you can "get out" of your mech suits and work with powersuits and vehicles, it made for a much more diverse gameplay. I MUCH preferred MA2 to MA; MA seemed more like Rock-Paper-LaserCannon.

I'm no scientician, but I reckon that Rock-Paper-LaserCannon is a bit unbalanced.  Paper is always going to win, man.
9379  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Wireless router advice on: October 14, 2007, 05:27:40 PM
With the recent acquisition of a PSP and a Zune coming in the mail (I couldn't pass up Woot's $99 deal) I would like to replace my router with one that has wireless access.  I'm pretty clueless about wireless networking, though.  I would like to have 4 regular ports to keep my 360 and PC wired, and likely only need 802.11g/b wireless unless 'n' isn't much more expensive.

My current router seems to have problems playing games on XBox Live even though I have the ports opened and everything reports as good in the Live test utility, so my real concern with the new one is compatibility with Live.  I know they have this list of supported routers, but I have no idea when that was last updated and I'm guessing most of those models have seen new versions released.  I also haven't seen the XBox Live Compatible logo on any routers in stores, but I haven't looked too far and wide.

Anyone have any suggestions for models that work well or ones to avoid?

I've never heard of any recent EB/GameStop doing price matching.  It would really surprise me if they did.
9381  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Circuit City sucks on: October 14, 2007, 10:17:00 AM
The fact is that Circuit City never showed having copies of The Orange Box in stock this week at any stores within 50 miles of me.  Not on day of release or since, until the deal was over.  That's what pisses me off.  Putting something on sale and deliberately not stocking it.  That sort of thing is not common practice at all stores.

And I didn't call all retail employees clueless idiots, although a lot of them are.  I know what it's like, I worked at Target for three years.  It doesn't take much at all to at least look at your weekly sales circular to know what is on sale, especially in your department.  Fuck, I stocked shelves at night and I could have told you 10 times more about our products than most Circuit City workers could tell me about a store that is 1/10th the size.  That's why I called them clueless idiots.  Working at a retail job, part time or not, does not automatically give you the right to have no idea what's going on.  It's part of the job.  You yourself just called most of your fellow coworkers idiots.

9383  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Circuit City sucks on: October 14, 2007, 06:21:19 AM
As you may or may not know, Circuit City had The Orange Box [PC] on sale for $38 this last week.  Fantastic price on a new game, let alone 5 games.  They didn't have any in stock earlier this week, but since I wanted to pick up a copy locally if possible I entered my email address online to inform me when they got them in stock.  And surprise, surprise, they didn't get any in stock until 11pm tonight, the day that the sale ended.

This is the same shit they pulled when they had the "Buy one Xbox Live accessory for $19.99+, get $20 off a second one" and they pulled all of their 1600 Marketplace point cards off the shelves.

Then there is the fact that things on sale aren't even in the computer at the sale price the few times I've been able to pick them up, and you have to show the clueless idiots that work there (because they fired anyone experienced that may have had a clue) their own ad to get that price.

So my message to Circuit City: quit putting out deals if you don't intend to actually sell those things, dickheads!

(and yes, I just pricematched at Best Buy rather than waiting for these jerkbags...which was probably their plan all along, if they are capable of thinking that far ahead)

Black is a great shooter and absolutely worth the price you can get it for these days.  It truely is gun-porn, and I loved just shooting the crap out of everything.  My only complaint is the unskippable, boring breifings between missions.  I really hope Criterion is working on a new game in the series.

I like platformers in general, but Conker didn't hold my interest that long.  Some of it's humor is good fun, but a lot of it is immature crap (both figuratively and literally).

Yeah, I was happy with the performance of UT3 on my crappy old system, but I was less than impressed with the gameplay.  Overall it felt pretty much exactly like the game we were playing 4 years ago.  It went from a really exciting upcoming release to a wait-and-see until some mods and things come out.

Oh, well.  I've got plenty of other gaming goodness to keep me busy for a few months.

Some games do it to me and some don't.  Played the entire Halo 3 campaign and never a flutter, but this one tears me up for some reason.

Quite a sweet package deal nonetheless.

Have you tried general motion-sickness cures like Dramamine or ginger root?

FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage
Half-Life 2: Episode 2

Halo 3 (which I still haven't touched...)
Stuntman: Ignition
Fear Gold

And then all the new demos for CoD4, UT3, PGR4, etc.  Sheesh!

While I agree with you that it sounds like they will be pushing for faster and bigger development, I think the numbers might be misleading.  I think when they say "4-5 games" what they mean is "4-5 SKUs" which means that Mass Effect and a theoretical Mass Effect PC would be two games, not one.

Yeah, I believe their other quote was "10 properties over the next 5 or 6 years", which is only one actual game per studio per year, but they could end up on multiple platforms (like Mercenaries 2, which will be on 360, PS3, PS2 and PC).

There's an interview with a couple of the heads of Pandemic over at Gamasutra, but of course it's full of a lot of company-building BS and rhetoric.  The real outcome of this won't really be known for a couple years, I would think.  I'm certainly not seeing it as a positive thing, though.

Myto, basically all you have to do is click your mouse where you want him to shoot-out one of the wires.  You want to aim at a piece of the "ceiling" that is in front of him, and then maintain your momentum and keep swinging like Spider-Man.

This guy has done some other games that entertained me a while back, like Cat with bow golf, Egg Way, and War of the Hell (I didn't make up the names...).  I can't read a damn thing on the site, but just click on the pictures and try them out.
