9361  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Stimulus Rebates! on: May 09, 2008, 10:44:51 PM
I just got my $600 deposited today, and as much as I would love to pick up a new PC or a PS3, I decided it was better spent going directly to credit card debt.  One of them is paid off now but I still have quite a bit on the other so I need to behave a bit (if buying 5 games this month is considered behaving...).

Im IN closed beta..its what wont run. Heck the game was final a week ago and is at the shippers now ready to go out I bet. It wont be any better than what Im not getting to play now.

Considering they just released a 540 meg patch (that I'm guessing you never downloaded) I think it will be quite improved from the version on the disc.  I'll eat my hat if they don't release at least another patch before live.
9363  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Age of Conan (It's Golden!) on: May 09, 2008, 08:09:58 PM
They took a lot of the Advanced options out in this last patch, it seems.  They may have reverted to forcing shader 2.0 for now.  I do know that the patch fixed my crazy-long load times and frequent hitching when playing.  I haven't had it crash yet, either, but I haven't played for that long since the new patch.
9364  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Zune Software 2.5 on: May 09, 2008, 06:07:18 AM
It's funny (and frustrating) that they still haven't gotten version 2.5 to have the features that the first version did.  I wish there was an option to just use that software with the new firmware on my Zune.
9365  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Any interest in GRID? on: May 09, 2008, 01:37:35 AM
I tried this out on my lunch break and was impressed.  As others have said the graphics are great and I felt that the driving was great, except that I totally suck at the drift racing.

I'm sure I will pick this up when it comes out, even though I have too many other games to play as it is.  It's gotten me even more excited to see what they bring with Dirt 2!

I have mixed feelings about the success of GTA. Sure it's fun and in some ways artful, but it's also incredibly sexist and juvenile and exploitative and base. And you know tons of kids are playing it, M rating or no. This is not exactly gaming's best foot forward when this thing breaks all sales records.

And yet it's had half a billion dollars worth of sales.  I think the fact that this game sells so well says that this is what the people want.  You can't blame the game for what it says about us.  If the game was truly offensive, it wouldn't sell so well.

Precisely.  Look at Postal, for instance.

Well, there's a difference between a good game with offensive material and a shit game made only to be offensive.

That's pretty close to the system I use at work (although I have 7950 w/ 512 of RAM) and I think you will get decent performance at medium settings.  Hopefully the patch they release will put an end to the hitching and that will make the performance seem much better overall.

It depends on the team but they are pretty good and I think they can deliver.  They've done Mercenaries, Star Wars Battlefront 1&2, Destroy All Humans! 1&2, and the Full Spectrum Warrior games.  They're working on Mercenaries 2 and Sabateur, which both look very cool.

Yeah, this sounds kind of cool but if it results in slower, unresponsive gameplay I am not going to be happy with that.

I hopped out before the race started and started throwing molotovs at the other cars.  Of course they didn't let me complete the mission but his reaction was worth it.

You do realize that if you equip molotovs before you enter the car you can throw them out the window, right?

Does the one month free thing only work for new customers? I'm not new to Netflix, but I haven't subbed since around January. Godzilla Blitz sent me an invite for the 1 free month, but Netflix seemed to recognize that I was a previous customer and said no go.

Those free-month (or 2-week) things are only for new customers.  You may be able to trick their system by signing up with a different email address (I did that for the free trial of GameFly a couple times) or it may use your actual address in the check in which case you just need to move and change your name.  slywink

Also, what is with these companies releasing demos right after GTA4?  If it were me I would wait at least a couple weeks.

I would argue that Stuntman is a poor indicator of how much you'll like Stuntman Ignition.  From what I remember, there were some fairly hefty loading times for retries in the first one, and the stunts were very unforgiving.  Ignition removes the loading times, and the stunts are more forgiving.  I didn't like Stuntman, but loved Ignition.

OK, well, if I think that I would like it with easier stunts and shorter loading times, I will get Stuntman 2 smile

He's talking about Stuntman: Ignition on the Xbox 360, not Stuntman 2.

I think we're talking about the same thing.

Yeah, I guess so.  For some reason I was thinking that there was actually a Stuntman 2 released like a year after the first, but I can find no record of it.  Weird.

I had to laugh tonight when after I went drinking with Roman I tried to hail a cab and instead of doing the whistle and wave thing Niko yelled out in a slurred accent: "Taxi caaaab!"  "Yellow car!" as he stumbled around and fell down.  That just struck me as really funny, for some reason.

I've finally gotten the second safehouse unlocked and a few missions beyond, but the game is still not really grabbing me.  Here I am, a huge fan of open-world games and I have to talk myself into playing the biggest release of the year.  What the hell?

Stuntman Ignition on the 360 was one of my favorite games of the past year.  It's still "repeat until you get it" driving, but when you fail and retry, there's virtually no loading time at all, which takes a lot of the sting out of retries.  Plus, the levels are so over the top and awesome, it's still fun even going back and retrying many times to max your score.  Highly, highly recommended if you have a 360.
Agreed.
A tremendous game. And tremendously underappreciated.

Absolutely.  I know the topic was asking about the last-gen games, but it's worth repeating that Stuntman on the 360 freaking rocks.

I played Chase on the original XBox and I enjoyed it.  Certainly not the best game ever, but it entertained me for the cheap used price.

I think the 3-day early program is for any preorder to help offset launch-day madness.  You have to pay $5 to start early, but you get a total of 10 days out of it (3 early, 7 added onto the end of your subscription) so I see no reason not to do it.
9389  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Official GTA4 impressions thread on: May 05, 2008, 09:36:52 PM
So for all of you guys that are absolutely in love with GTA4 have you played the other open-world games of this generation to any extent?  I'm talking about Saints Row, Crackdown, Just Cause, etc.  To me, and I've played them all for many hours, I don't see GTA4 as doing anything that is really revolutionary.  I played all the previous GTA games on PC so I was used to a decent aiming system, and I don't think the cover system is implemented all that well here.

Don't get me wrong, I think the game is good and has many nice touches, but I don't see where the extreme excitement comes from.

Yeah, I guess it wouldn't surprise me that the Open Beta is a slightly older version since things in the closed beta seem pretty good to me.  Certainly not perfect but not doom and gloom.  There are some looong load times between areas and hitching when first caching things, but it seemed to perform pretty well with everything cranked up at 1680x1050 on my work system (Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, dual GeForce 7950 GX2).

The worries I have relate more to overall content design than to performance and stability.  I'm wondering how many times you would really want to go through the low-end content.  For a game like WoW, the many different starting areas means that you can play every race up to 20 and hardly do any of the same quests or see the same areas.  Here it seems like the early levels may be the grind to get to the later stuff, and who really wants to do the same thing when they start an alt of a new race/class?  I haven't played enough to know that for a fact, I'm just guessing from what I've seen.

Having said that, from my experience so far I have no qualms about keeping my preorder.  Despite any problems and crashes, I was just plain having fun in the game.  Combat seems like a refreshing change without being crazy-different (for melee, at least), the graphics are great, there are lots of quality voice-overs and it seems like a well-made world.  So what I'm saying is, don't completely give up hope.

The ironic thing is that in the last couple weeks I've actually been pulled back into Lord of the Rings Online.  My subscription for that continues into June, so I may keep playing it and save the rest of Conan until launch.

OK, I'm debating whether or not it's worth cancelling my Gamestop pre-order for the regular edition to get the CE from somewhere else.  as far as I can tell the only benefits will be the in-game ring and cape as I'll still get the mammoth mount.

Yeah, the ring and cape in-game as well as the making-of DVD material (which is what I go for, really), the leather map (meh), soundtrack CD (meh), and art book (look through it once) as well as the five free guest passes which are normally in both editions but seem to be exclusive.  Oh, and the "Hand-finished, metal-embossed oversized collector's box with inlay page and individually numbered holographic sticker"...that's what really sold me on it. slywink
