really. What's the basis for such a law?

It's insane.  I never would have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself.  Just one more reason to never live there...

Same law in Oregon.  Every time I've driven through there the attendants had to remind me about it.
9362  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (5/19) on: May 19, 2008, 05:17:09 PM
Age of Conan!  (even though I also said that last week with the early access).

I've also got a copy of Wii Fit coming, and hopefully I can get some fun out of that.  I also bought Mega Man Powered Up [PSP] on clearance yesterday.

I much prefer to take flax seed oil pills instead of fish oil.  I've had cases where later on in the day I was belching up a horrid dead fish gas from fish oil pills, and after that I just swore them off.

I need to find some of those mescaline grapes, though...
9364  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: mp3 players on: May 19, 2008, 04:39:30 PM
Yeah, I also have a Zune and really like it.  Some friends that only had IPods checked it out when they visited a couple months ago and they even commented that they really liked the interface.

The PC software leaves some things to be desired (a few options I would like are not there), but the most recent update has helped.  The fact that they still support the older ones with new firmware updates/features is a huge plus in my book.
9365  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: AoC - Pvp servers, how are they? on: May 19, 2008, 02:39:31 PM
I've been on a non-RP PVP server and only got ganked once.  I some others in a group who were doing a fairly good job of policing against random gankers.

I still think the time wasted by getting randomly ganked by someone you have no chance against may just be better served on a non-PVP server.  But at least there's no fighting allowed around Tortage, and your Destiny quests are instanced for only you, so you can avoid it there.

I actually got the game to run on my crap computer.  The settings are all low and some textures are blurry, but for the most part it looks decent and runs at 15-20 fps.  Considering the specs, I'm surprised it ran at all:

Athlon XP 2600+
1Gig RAM
6600 GT 128 MB

As for the guild stronghold sieges, I thought that when a guild tries to attack the "owners" get to set a day/time for the attack that will work best for their members.
9368  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Target clearance watch - April update! on: May 19, 2008, 02:26:36 AM
I went to a different Target today and they had a ton of stuff on clearance, although most of it was the same things mentioned before.

I did pick up a copy of Mega Man Powered Up for the PSP for $7.48, and there were a few more copies.  I was never able to find this game when it was $19.99, so for less than 8 bucks I'm more than happy!

The only problem is that in certain states/counties you are required to do emissions checks for vehicle licensing, and they won't even check it if your light is on.

In CA this is an automatic fail. Many places will charge you for the full smog check anyway.

Well have you ever tried my method?  When I was in Washington and showed up for one with the light on they told me to take it to the shop up the road.  All that shop did was charge me $80 to reset it and send me right back to the emissions test.  The next time I just reset it myself by disconnecting the power and saved the money. They already have the manual checking equipment for cars that don't have the on-board emissions diagnostic.

And as far as paying for Early Access goes - technically your $5 went towards playing the game 3 days early, as well as playing for 10 extra days beyond your 30 day trial. Or at least that's what I thought it was.

Well, it's 10 days total.  3 days early access and 7 onto the end of your first month.

I guess I just wish if they were taking the servers down that they would do it at 6am or something, not in the middle of the day.
9372  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Age of Conan - Early access is open! on: May 18, 2008, 06:51:35 PM
Crap, so they apparently took the servers down again today?  I just drove to work so I could play on a good computer and find out that it will be down for another hour at least.

I understand they are "constantly upgrading and tweaking our servers to get everything ready for the big launch" and I didn't mind it so much yesterday for the first launch but now I'm getting a bit annoyed.  I paid for these early days of playing so I could get some hours in on the weekend when I have free time, not so I could sit here in the middle of the day playing the waiting game.  Hopefully they compensate with some free time at least.

I've found the Dark Templar pretty good to solo with.  You start to get some life-leech skills and feats after a while, which can help for self-healing when fighting.  I usually have no trouble taking on 2 same-level mobs, but more than that or higher level can get deadly pretty quick.

I would like to point out that Boom Blox is the perfect type of game for this.  It's something that you can play for ten or twenty minutes before getting back to your obsession.  While it's very addictive, it hasn't taken me away from GTA IV.

I've put over an hour into some puzzles on Boom Blox. I think this has to do with my obsessive compulsive nature, but my point is that it is not a 10 to 20 minute quick fix for me.

I don't necessarily spend an hour on one puzzle, but I agree that it is not a game I can only play for 10 or 20 minutes.

chances are they're killing the torrent as soon as they get the download complete so it doesn't eat up any of of their bandwidth as they play.

Yup.  I also found that I got better speeds by following their tips (from the 'about' page) to limit the upload to the minimum and turn the number of peers down (even though that second seems weird to me).  It more than tripled my speeds from around 110KB/s to 366 right now.

I played for a few hours with no crashes, so that's all I have to say about the servers but I do have a question for others.  The new PvP ruleset, Culture PvP, that sounds like it is realm vs. realm which is what I think DAoC had and more or less what WoW's PvP is Horde vs. Alliance, so my question is the regular PvP servers in AoC are they everyman/guild for themselves regardless of race/realm?

Yup, outside of a city area you can stab anybody, regardless of race.

I did get booted from the server once and had to wait in a queue for a couple minutes, but that's the extent of my problems.  Just hit level 12, but I need to get some food.

I may even try installing it on my home computer tonight and see how it runs.  I want to keep playing!
9385  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Age of Conan - Early access is open! on: May 17, 2008, 11:26:43 PM
Just played for about 3 hours and had no problems at all.  Ran at least as well as the closed beta had been and no client or server crashes or anything else.

I ended up on a PvP server that one of my co-workers is on (Deathwhisper or something), but I'm not sure if I'll stay there.  Haven't had ganking problems (everyone is around the same level, of course), but even going to help somebody when they pull extra mobs, you end up swinging and hitting them usually.

My check engine light has been on for a couple years.  I know it's related to the emissions system, but I have had the O2 sensors and catalytic converter replaced and it still just comes back on.  I've decided that I don't give a shit and will let it stay on until the car dies.

The only problem is that in certain states/counties you are required to do emissions checks for vehicle licensing, and they won't even check it if your light is on.  The trick there is to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to reset the sensor before you go in.  They won't be able to get useful data from the onboard diagnostics (have to go like 200 miles), so when they ask just tell them it was recently in the shop and they will do a manual test at the exhaust.  My car passes with flying colors that way.

Yeah, when I went a checked last night the Explore mode had pushed me from 43% up to a whole 49%.  Weird.

I really wish this game had more medium difficulty knock-down levels, ones that take like 4 or 5 tries to figure out.  It seems that a lot of levels I can figure out immediately (some taking a couple tries to get right), and then there are the others that are incredibly hard because they are throw some different mechanic and time limit on them or something.  I unlocked the expert levels, but those seem nigh impossible so far.

Not quite what you mean, but if I recall correctly Eve Online's entire networking code is written in Python.

That's right, I was actually just talking with a colleague who said Eve uses some form of stackless Python, which I have even less knowledge about.  Might be worth your time to check into that, Lee.

I spend the majority of my time with my 360 and the rest take a back seat.

I use my PC for some MMOs and such, but I haven't upgraded it in years.  My Wii get some use when family or friends visit (or when I'm playing the rare game like Boom Blox!), but most of the time it sits neglected.  My PSP only gets dug out when there is the occasional new game that I really want to play on it, and my PS2 and XBox are basically retired.

And I still have too many games to play right now.

That "golfing" firehose one is a beast!  I finally just gave up on it last night.  It's so difficult to aim those side shots because you're hitting the chemical block at a weird angle to get it to go to the side and it never quite goes where I want.  If only I could turn that brick!

I also can't get those last two laser ones.  I'm just not as fast and accurate as I wish I was.
