You guys do realize you're already on a forum, in a Bioshock thread, talking about the game, right?
9282  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (8/20) on: August 21, 2007, 12:47:27 AM
Since my 360 is currently dead...nothing.  Although I did just preorder a new PSP, if that counts.
9283  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: new 360 names? on: August 20, 2007, 12:08:11 PM
I think it's funny that they call the core the Arcade, since you won't really be able to download any more Live Arcade games on it with your memory card full.

What the heck is Star Wars Battlefront:Renegade Squadronsaywhat

Also, Daxter and Family Guy in the same bundle? Are they insane?

It's a new SW:Battlefront game designed just for the PSP where you play as a scoundrel in Han Solo's "Renegade Squadron" in single player, and of course the same Battlefield inspired multiplayer stuff as the other SW:Battlefront games.  I hate to link to IGN, but they have a bunch of previews, screenshots, videos, etc

I'm assuming the thinking on the Daxter + Family Guy combo is for their target teen-twenties market.  Daxter may seem kiddie, but I've been playing it the last couple days and it is excellent in oh so many ways.  Of course you can get it for $15 at Best Buy these days.

In case you can't tell, I'm kind of excited about the new PSP.  I just preordered a piano black one.

I'm in the same boat as you, Blackadar.  I bought my 360 last summer and haven't looked back since.  Sure, there are a few games I would like to be able to run on my PC, but there are a lot more on the 360 that run perfectly and look great and will continue to do so for the next few years.

I also saw somewhere or other that sometime in the fall/winter MS will start including two games with any new 360. I believe Marvel Ultimate Alliance (or whatever it's called) is one of the games. I can't remember the other.

The other was Forza 2.  I think it was Kotaku that had pictures of those Holiday packs.

I think it's a little too late for the HD-DVD drive to be part of the 360.  Not that the format war is over, but it's just not a great idea at this point.
9289  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PSP 2000 available for preorder on Amazon on: August 20, 2007, 01:25:45 AM
Yup, like wonderpug said, you can hook it up to your TV with (sold seperately) composite or component cables.  UMDs will display on both at full screen 640x480, games only via composite cables and at the native resolution of 480x272p.

It also has double the internal memory (64 MB) and caching functionality to potentially speed up load times.  I'm curious to see if this works well for older games or mostly only for games designed with it in mind.

You can also charge the PSP via a regular USB cable now, instead of having to buy a special USB-power splitter cable.

I'm just trying to decide between the ice-silver on that comes in the Daxter pack or the piano black one.

why does the site have a 'Time Left on Archlord' countdown on the right-hand side?

I'm assuming that has something to do with the actual Archlord, the top tier player in the game.
9292  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Archlord now for free on: August 19, 2007, 02:34:30 AM
To be fair, I think they just launched their second expansion (also downloaded for free), so there could be some good new additions to the game.  Or not.  Who knows.  If I had the free drive space I'd try it and see, but I'm not going to uninstall real games for that.

I just saw that Codemasters is now letting you download and play Archlord for free.  As far as I can tell there is no catch or time limit, although like lots of these games you can use real money to buy in-game credits to buy gear and such.  Not sure how much that affects others, but it's supposed to be fully playable without buying anything.

(and yes, Archlord did previously take out the monthly fee, but now you don't even have to buy a box copy you can just download it all for free)

I think the reason you don't see much voice acting on the DS isn't necessarily the lack of production values, but more because it is still a cartridge-based medium so space is pretty limited compared to most disc-based stuff and is more expensive to make.  Although now I believe they can support up to 256 MB carts, usually if they can fit the game on a smaller one then it saves them money in manufacturing.  I also read that the larger carts have slower transfer speeds than the more normal sized 64MB ones, but I'm sure it still has to be miles better than UMD's transfer speeds.

Well, I guess it was my turn to eat shit and die.  My 360 locked up after a couple minutes of the Katamari Damacy demo.  I figured not a big deal, that can happen with a demo, right?  Upon reboot it locked up at the 360 logo a couple times and then the last time it gave me the Red Rings of Death.  I haven't even gotten to try out the Bioshock demo!

The kicker is that when I try to use their new Service website it doesn't show my console as being registered, even though I did that when I bought it.  So of course I should just be able to add the serial number as a new device, right?  Wrong.  It gives me an error and says I have to call their Customer Support line.  The whole reason I went online was so I could avoid talking to those useless, unintelligible bastards.  Curses!   disgust

9307  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: HDTV recommendations for console gaming on: August 15, 2007, 09:54:38 AM
I don't keep up with things too much, but aren't regular DVDs at 480p?  Wouldn't it have been a better test to just put in HD-DVDs and check results at 720p vs 1080p?  I'm not saying there is a huge difference, but having the same source could easily change the results.

I'm curious, if you're only putting on deodorant, why not just use cologne or something that is bound to smell better than Speed Stick?

Okay, you don't understand what deodorant does.

It doesn't just cover up the smell, it prevents the smell.  Cologne doesn't do that.  You can still have bad BO w/ cologne.  With deodorant you might be sweaty, but still not stinky.

Kratz knows of what he speaks.

One time (and only one time), I ran out of deodorant. I used cologne to try to mask the lack of deodorant.

I made an early lunch-time run to the store for a stick of deodorant that day. icon_wink

Well, I have to admit that the last time I used regular deodorant without antipersperant was back in the awkward teenage years of overflowing hormones and uncontrollable sweating (as well as other things).  I may have to give it a try again next time I buy a stick.  Maybe even some of wonderpug's Tom's of Maine stuff.  smile

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames - Mitch demands I buy this title.  *shrug*  Looks like an improved Just Cause.

Bite your tongue,  heathen.  I loved Mercenaries, and couldn't stand Just Cause at all.  I hope it's more an improved mercenaries than an improved Just Cause....because anything would be an improvement over that steaming pile...

Educate me.  Looks like free-form, hijack anything, go anywhere, blow anything up, help the factions gameplay.  Am I missing something?

Since Just Cause was an imitation of Mercenaries 1, I don't think so.

Nope, you got the basic elements right, but as you well know, the devil is in the details.  I mean crap...that list there could almost describe GTA or Saints Row, or any free-form game.

Mercenaries got those details right...Just Cause didn't.  It was just a pale imitation, a lost cause.

besides, in Mercs 2 you get to whack Venezuelans and help prepare for our eventual invasion!!!!

I enjoyed both Mercs 1 and Just cause for what they were, and I think Mercenaries 2 will probably be damn well awesome.

My GOTY so far:
Crackdown or DiRT

GOTY played but not released in 2007:
hmm, I'll have to think about that

Anticipated GOTY material (or what I'm excited about):
Mercenaries 2
Halo 3
some others that may or may not work out (Aassassin's Creed, Army of Two, etc)

I did some looking around and a quote from Sony says for the new versions: "The Daxter PSP Pack will be available September 10th, the Star Wars PSP pack will be available on October 9.  The core PSP will be available in September, I don't have a hard date yet."

Amazon is showing preorders for the PSP 2000 available on September 10th for the $169 core price and the Daxter or Star Wars packs at $199, so that is good news.  Toys R Us shows the Daxter pack coming with Daxter (obviously), a 1GB memory stick, and Family Guy: The Freakin' Sweet Collection video with the ice silver PSP.

In other news I picked up my first PSP game today (MX vs ATV On the Edge for $11 at CC) so I think I will have to actually buy a PSP now.  slywink

I tried the demo out for a few minutes, and what I saw wasn't too bad.  Some of the interface elements were a bit different than the standards, so that would take a little while to get used to.  I had to turn the textures down to medium but it ran pretty decent on my aging rig.
