9281  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Need help for system for in-laws on: April 27, 2007, 09:00:11 PM
As long as you don't want/need top of the line gaming gear, which they don't, you should be able to get something decent for pretty cheap.  With a $1000 budget you really have a ton of choices since basic PC prices have come down so much.

Obviously the more RAM the better, and I would say 1Gig would be bare minimum (especially since casual users often have many background programs/processes running and do not do anything to help performance).

If possible, I would try to find something other than Intel on-board graphics, but that may be the only choice for lower-end PCs so consider one with an expansion slot for a few years down the line.  Also consider that an on-board graphics chipset is going to share the system RAM for the video cache and will leave less RAM available for other programs and may slow the system down a bit in general, so more RAM would help with that.

No, I don't have a PS3 yet but I saw this info and thought I'd pass it along for those of you who do.

According to this post on the PlayStation forums, the Motorstorm 1.2 update will be coming mid-May and will fix various things including a boost exploit, online play and SD TV text problems as well as resetting players' FAME rankings.

I was happy to see that we had 25 members on the GT scoreboard.  Go team!

My recent obsession has been the 4k Challenge, which is kind of nice because it gives you the chance to lay down your design right away and see how well it will work.  Plus it's just good fun to send multiple groups to the slaughter right away.

Any manufacturer, software developer, etc... has to pay MS in some way to put out something on the windows OS.  Hardware makers have weird licensing and driving signing fees, along with OEM fees.  It's all fees, and more fees.  Sales of the actual OS matter only to make sure they keep the market primarily windows based so they can keep charging those fees.  All those fees add up.

Incorrect.  Unlike on a console, Windows development does not require any sort of fees be paid to Microsoft to publish a game or any other sort of software on the platform.  That is one of the big reasons PC's have been the haven of indie developers.  I could create and distribute my own Windows program using open source tools and not have to pay fees to anybody.

I tried out the demo of Pinball FX (only get the Speed Machine table) and I thought it was pretty good but to me it seemed as if the ball was playing just a little bit too fast or something.  Nobody else mentioned that, am I the only one who thought this?  I also like the old school spring loaded ball launchers, not the "hit a button and blast at full speed" kind.

Did they get any ninja moves to work?  I don't get the channel and I'd love to know what ninja feats I can try at home.

I'll spoiler tag for those that want to watch later in the week.

Spoiler for Hiden:
It was a bit disappointing for those of us looking for sweet ninja action.  As tested they didn't really get any of their moves to work but they used pretty narrow ideas for their tests.

For instance, with the catching a sword myth they went with bare hands trying to catch a sword coming straight down over their head by clapping their hands together, whereas the ninjitsu master had wraps on his hands that had plates in the palm so he could stop the blade more flat palmed.

As Ralph mentioned, the bow and arrow thing was at a very close range which was obviously done so they could have a predictable arrow path for the mechanical arm to grab, but it's not very realistic to demonstrate the reaction time a ninja would have at much longer distances.

Their walking on water tricks were pretty weak because not only were they only doing it on pool water (not salt water or rice-paddy mud, etc) but they had uncoordinated Adam basically just jumping in and flailing as he fell over.  A ninja would likely be much lighter than him, and far more coordinated and much better balance.  I've seen the ninjitsu masters competing against some other martial arts walking up balance poles and the ninja's balance put the others to shame.  And Adam is no martial artist.  I would doubt he could even get up by skiiing behind a boat.  slywink

And finally, a lot of the ninja mystique was the tricks they used for misdirection and misinformation, which Mythbusters did mention but of course didn't (and couldn't) take into account.

No, it's not out yet but one of the staff posters over at the Crackdown forums posted some info about the new content they should have coming.

Hello All - Hopefully the PR snipers won't take me down or this image, but here's a quick look at a piece of content coming to you "soon".  I'll let the pic do the talking, but essentially you are going to see a new game type and a new type of vehicle when you click the below link.

That's all I can tell you or show you for now.

It appears as if they have a dune buggy vehicle coming as well as a new 4 player game mode for racing or something.

Thanks Ron.  Bummer about any mid-mission saves.  Some of the gigantic missions of the previous games were fantastic, right up until either the insta-death or boss fight you couldn't quite figure out.   Side note:  This is something else I've never been able to figure out about the Tenchu series.  Why is it that you sneak around the entire level, avoiding any and all detection, then they always throw you into a giant melee battle against the level boss?  That always seemed silly to me.

Yeah, that part was always a bit of a frustrating mess that didn't make sense to me.  I would love to see some other sort of end-level scheme implemented, but I'm having a hard time coming up with one that wouldn't seem a little anticlimactic since you would just assassinate the last target like you did for 50 other guys on that level.

At the very least, if you're going to have a boss fight, make a save point right before you walk into his door.  Nothing sucks more than having to go through a half hour of level to get back to the same frustratingly difficult boss battle.

Quote from: Gratch on April 26, 2007, 04:30:39 AM

The smell thing sounds pretty gimmicky to me.  Is it implemented well?

To add on to this question, is there some sort of visual cue for this system?  Little smell clouds coming off you?  Or just a general stink-ometer?  I would kind of like to see little clouds or waves that get pushed by the wind so you would have to get around upwind of dogs and such.

In perfect time to coincide with the preview of Tenchu, Mythbusters' episode tonight is covering Ninja myths.  The specific myths they are covering are: walking on water (or the illusion of), catching a samurai's sword with your hands, and catching an arrow.  It looks like they've also got a ninjitsu master on hand to help demonstrate some moves.

If you are on the west coast it's on right now (9pm), but as with all things Discovery it will be replayed later in the night (1am) and again on the weekend.  Or just check out their website for showtimes and special web episodes of Ask a Ninja with Adam and Jamie.

This doesn't exactly "blow my mind", but it certainly looks like it has the potential to be an impressive Battlefield type game on the PS3.  I don't see it being a killer app, but I bet it will find a good, dedicated audience like the SOCOM series did.

Of course they seem to have abandoned the point of the Warhawk name by eliminating the single player and making it infantry and ground vehicle based.
9303  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]Tenchu Z on: April 26, 2007, 01:14:09 AM
Yeah, the screenshots don't look great and the Japanese demo they released last year (which I tried on my 360) was pretty dang low tech.  Didn't look much better than some original XBox games, although it did look better than the Tenchu game on the XBox.

Honestly, the graphics have always been pretty bad for the Tenchu series, way back to the terrible texture problems of the first one.  I wish it looked as good as something like Ninja Gaiden, but it has the gameplay I want so I put up with it.

Nice to see a local preview of this one and I'm looking forward to the next part of it.  I enjoyed the previous Tenchu games despite their obvious problems, so I think this one will be a no-brainer purchase for me.

Also, if you want to be a stealthy ninja sneaking around rooftops, zipping around on your line and executing evil bastards in brutal ways, you really don't have any other choice.

I don't think Halo 2 will be the breakaway title which kick-starts Live for Windows, but it's definitely the wave of the future.  My vote for Live's killer app is Shadowrun.  Even if it isn't, you have to admit that the Live Silver membership is still a thousand times better than any other game matchmaking service out there on the PC.

I'm not so sure that Shadowrun is going to be a hit with the PC kids as much as the consolers.  Check out IGN's hands-on preview comparison.

Instead of doing double-shots like this why don't they release one game a week so they can guarantee releases for later in the year.  I would prefer that to having so many weeks with nothing coming out, and it would give each game a better shot at the spotlight as well as just looking better in their PR not to have gaps like that.

As for these two games, they both look interesting but I'll try out the demos and debate the pricepoint.

Wouldn't having two games come out every week without missing a week be better?  Could be they finally have enough in the pipeline to do that.  Perhaps not, though.

Maybe, if they can reliably release two games every week for the rest of the year and beyond, that would be fabulous.  Not going to happen.  I'd be very surprised if they can do that into Fall.

I guess I would just be a little bit more conservative with releases after so many missteps in the past.  Fans are much less forgiving about missing weeks than they are with "only" getting one title every week, as we have seen around here.  Unless that only new game is something like New Rally-X...

The thing that always bugged me about the Harry Potter series (and don't get me wrong, I enjoy the books) is that after the first few times you would think that people would be a little more accepting of the fact that Voldemort is back and bad shit is afoot.

Or you'd think that after the 4th or so time Harry would just learn that things would be much easier if he just told Dumbledore his suspicions/worries right off rather than try to solve everything himself.

Exactly.  That same scene plays out in nearly every book and Harry is always a dumbass and doesn't say anything.
