9281  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Delayed on: September 23, 2007, 06:34:35 AM
So far it really looks like this fall/winter isn't going to be as crowded as once thought.  I can't say that this is much of a surprise since it happens every year, but it's still a bit of a bummer that some of the games I was really looking forward too have been pushed back to next year.

So far I have seen announcements for delays or later releases for the following games:
  • Grand Theft Auto IV (all)
  • Mercenaries 2 (all)
  • Assassin's Creed (PC delayed until next year, 360/PS3 in November)
  • Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway (all)
  • Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising (PC)

Out of those titles, I think the one that bums me out the most is probably Mercenaries 2.  I have high hopes for that one, and who can resist blowing everything up in an open-world game?  Certainly not me.

The good news is that there are still great games coming for any platform you may have.

the latest video has been released, and it's arguably the best yet...

'Enemy Weapon'

it's generic link that should go straight to the most recent video...just choose 'Enemy Weapon' from the list if it doesn't.
there's also a higher resolution version here icon_cool

Great, so I have to install their fancy new Silverlight thing so that I can get a video that syncs up worse than shitty YouTube stuff?  Progress is sweet.   retard

Where are you getting that information, unbreakable?  Look at the stitching on the sweatshirt and it appears as if that is the outside.  You can see the front middle pocket at the bottom of the picture and the stitching around the neck part.  You can see some of the visible painted design above the device.  It's also the smooth exterior surface and not the soft pill-y interior of most sweatshirts.

Sort of. They got rid of the cheap model and sold the old premium model for $500 and then came out with a new premium model for $600. I am waiting for an actual price drop where I can get one for $400 or less.

Let's please not start that again.  It's just arguing semantics.  True, they still have the same entry price point, but you get more for your money.

Wearing something like this is about the equivalent to joking about having a bomb in your suitcase.  Did she not know that they make you take off your jackets when going through the metal detectors?

She was just there to pick up a friend, for which I'm pretty sure you normally don't go through any sort of security screening or metal detectors because you aren't allowed beyond those points without a boarding pass.  It was certainly a stupid thing to wear, regardless.
9288  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Any suckers buy Juiced 2? on: September 21, 2007, 06:18:46 PM
I did try the single player demo out a while ago (a new multiplayer demo just came out too, but haven't tried it), and there were actually some interesting elements in it.  As you race you "upgrade" your racer DNA, so if you are an aggressive driver who powerslides your turns then your DNA will reflect that.  I believe you can exchange DNA with people you meet online and race against their AI counterparts and such.  It's been a while so I can't remember all of the specifics, but I do remember enjoying it and thinking that I should comment on it here and see what others thought.

I must say that I do detest the Hot Import Nights scantily-clad females and rice rocket culture they have jammed in there, and that's the one reason I'm not seriously considering buying it.  I think if you can get past that shallow exterior, there may be a pretty neat arcade racer underneath.
9289  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Warmonger...new post apoc MMO..its free too on: September 21, 2007, 06:03:32 PM
There is the first video of the game in action up at the official site.  Also available in downloadable sizes.

It's not breathtaking and if this were a full-priced game there would be several things I could nitpick about, but since it's going to be free I think it looks like something fun to at least try out.  Kind of reminds me of playing certain maps in Red Faction online, which was always a freaking blast (literatly) when you could use the rocket launcher to knock out walls and floors and whatever the hell you wanted.  I always wished they had built on that for the sequel.

The one thing I will say, is that it doesn't really appear as if the PhysX is there for much of anything at all other than some superfluous cloth physics.  Perhaps that is a byproduct of being released for non-hardware accelerated physics, but I was expecting more, more, more.

9292  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Is there any point in buying a game at release anymore? on: September 21, 2007, 04:23:44 PM
There are some games that I am willing to wait for $30 or less, but there are also quite a few for which my desire to play them overrules my wanting to save that money.  I know that logically I've already waited months (or sometimes years) for that game to get released so what does another 6 months matter, but sometimes I just really want to play it when it comes out.

Part of it may also be that I like to experience a game with the additional community interaction and reactions around here.

And why do you say this?

Several things.  First off, these guys are not Blizzard no matter how much they want you to believe it, and I don't think their individual names will carry as much weight with the casual and overseas fans.

But perhaps more importantly, the environment has changed.  Other than a few distinct titles, PC Gaming is not doing nearly as well as it was back then.  Hellgate is launching at the peak of three new console systems, whereas Diablo 2 hit the market at the end of a console cycle before the PS2 had even been released here.  Diablo 2 launched in June with basically no competition, these guys are coming right in the middle of a 3-way console shitstorm with some hugely anticipated games like Halo 3, Mass Effect, Ratchet & Clank, Mario Galaxy, etc.

Personally I don't think the game has the more universal visual appeal of Diablo, and it requires a higher end system to run it looking decent.

Then there is the fact that you can look at the general feeling towards this game and even hardcore gamers are not that excited for it.  Their pricing structure has obviously not gone over well and is leaving some gamers feeling like they won't be getting the full game unless they pony up an extra $10 a month.

I will be happy to eat my hat if this game is as successful as Diablo, but I just don't see it happening.

One of this fall's big notches in the PS3 belt now gone until 2008.

Oh, boy, I totally didn't see that coming.  What with all the hype and concrete details they've been giving us.  slywink

And I think you guys are discounting the fact that the whole reason they launched when they did was to get Blu-Ray to the market.  Had the PS3 been delayed a year the HD movie market would probably be drastically different, Blu-Ray parts would not be as cheap as they have become because there would have been a lot less of them made, and Sony would have screwed themselves on two fronts.

It's easy to defend.

It's their game.  You don't have to buy it.  You don't have a right to own it.  Once owning it, you don't have a right to any service they deem fit to offer.

Easy, isn't it?

Now, with all that being said?  If it proves too unpopular, who knows?  They might change that later down the line.  Personally, I don't see it being an issue.  I mean, c'mon.  Hellgate is basically a small-scale MMO.  They're going to give us upgraded content (they say), and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.  Besides, i plan on paying $150 up front and the never have to worry about it agaiin.

Of course, it probably means I won't get Guitar Hero 3 or Rock Band until 2008, but hey.  That's a choice I have to make.

That means you're pretty sure its worth the cost right? I still wont say its a MMO in the traditional sense at all. They have encorporated "some" aspects of that, enough to warrant them asking for a monthly fee? I don't think so.

Gate...Open...Flood.....End of PC gaming as we know it........Potentially.

Right.  To me, it's worth the cost.  My basis for this is the performance of Diablo 2, given that the majority of the people involved in D2 are at Flagship.  Take a look at the Xfire stats for Diablo 2.  Last month, it was the #1 most-played non-MMO.

If you think Hellgate is going to do even 1/10th of what Diablo 2 did, I think you are delusional.

For any one that's interested, it's on sale at Target this week for regular price but you get a $10 gift card with it.  It's certainly tempting me, but I think I will try to hold off since there are so many other games coming out in the next month or two.

One, it doesn't look like a MMO (they talk about it being a FPS all over the place); two, I don't have a PhysX card (nor will I EVER be buying one); and three, has anybody even heard of this game until now? And it launches in a month?

One, it isn't an MMO, it's just an online shooter.  Two, you don't need a PhysX card to play the game.  Three, I have heard of it before.  And four, it's free!  Quitcher bitchin!  slywink

This one has been in development for a while and has always been targetted at either being a free release or a special PhysX pack in.  I don't think they expect it to knock Unreal Tournament 3 around or anything, it's just putting something out there for people to play and enjoy.   (what has the world come to when I'm not the voice of negativity?)

Played a bit of DiRT on the 360, and tried out the FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage, Skate and Tony Hawk Proving Grounds demos as well.

Even though I installed the Quake Wars demo when it first came out I just tried it for the first time last night and had a good time.  It actually ran on my system.  It seemed pretty much along the lines of Battlefield, but I didn't try the Strogg yet so maybe they change it up a bit.

9315  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sega Rally Revo on: September 17, 2007, 01:58:31 PM
The demo for this one just went up on the XBox Live Marketplace so I downloaded it and gave it a whirl.  My first impressions are pretty mixed.  On the one hand it looks great with colorful and detailed tracks and cars that look good clean or with the mud packed on.  The tracks have a nice deforming groove feature that alters your handling and makes for an ever-changing fastest line on the track.

On the other hand, the game doesn't feel like much of an improvement over the old Sega Rally arcade games.  The cars whip around at the barest touch of the analog stick, there are invisible walls the keep you on the track no matter what, and there is no damage modeling at all.

IGN UK reviewed it and gave it an 8.8, mostly knocking it for a lack of tracks, cutomization and damage modeling.  They said it takes half a dozen races to really get a handle on the controls, but I only ran a couple races before I was done with it.  I think my October racing dollars will be going for PGR4 and FlatOut: UC.

Oh, there is also a PSP version coming out, and curiously enough it's being developed by Bugbear, the guys that behind FlatOut and Rally Trophy.

Congrats on purchasing what may be the most overlooked gaming system out there right now smile  There's a ton of great stuff in almost every genre on the PSP - glad to see folks are still giving it a chance...

Really liking the PSP so far, but I still think the DS is the better system. Looking through what I have may missed in the puzzle/strategy/RPG area, it doesn't seem like there is a lot out there. Now if you like action games, it does seem the PSP is superior (I don't though).

Really? I thought there were a ton of RPG games for PSP, although they are almost exclusively Japanese or tactical (with Dungeon Siege being the one exception I can think of).

For puzzlers I've heard great things about Crush and want to pick it up soon (though likely not until it hits $20), and of course there are Lumines, Puzzle Quest, Mercury Meltdown, Luxor, Exit, Sudoku, Crossword, etc.

You're right that there are quite a few action and racing games on the PSP, though.  Thankfully those are a couple of my favorite genres.
