Which are illegal, no?

I never thought they were illegal. Or is it considered a concealed weapon for some reason or another?

It appears that the wiki hivemind says they are illegal in one way or another (possession, selling, buying) for civilians in many states/jurisdictions, but legal for government and military personnel.  I had long ago heard they were illegal, although I thought that was more applicable to the out-the-front kind.

A bit more of a stretch...but, Rampart!  Woo, that's one I'd be willing to pay for if it showed up on the Wii's VC.

It's available on the PS3 Network, so I doubt we'll see it on either of the other systems.  It got pretty bad reviews on the PS3 for bad control, though.

Doesn't look like it according to the details they provide.  PCIe is not the same as regular PCI slots.

Given your genre preferences, I can't really see why you would have picked up a 360 in the first place, but now that you have one I'm not sure why you would get rid of it before the RPGs and such start hitting this year.  Plus, have you seen screenshots from the new Ace Combat?  That looks freaking amazing, and I don't even play flight sim games.

I'm not sure when exactly I expected this title to be released, but recently on Xbox.com I noticed a release date of May 29th.   icon_eek  Does anyone know if this date still stands?  If so, I had no idea its release was so soon.  A friend of mine just mentioned a date of the 27th, but to me that sounds like a ship date if release date is the 29th, but if the 27th is in fact correct then I could have the game in my hands even sooner

Any word on what the actual release date is supposed to be?   drool

Considering the 27th is a Sunday and the 29th a Tuesday, I would say the 29th is the date you can probably expect it in stores.

I agree with TML  on most everything he said.  I doubt the sim crowd will be all that satisfied, but I enjoyed the demo a lot and this will definitely be a day one purchase for me (even though FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is supposed to come out the week after).

The only slight disappointment is that it seems like Travis Pastrana is the featured voice/personality for the US instead of Colin McRae.  Not to slight Pastrana, but he's just so cheery and un-accented.  Tongue

Yes, this is true.  My original point, however, was that I didn't think the scene fit in very well for me and felt like a forced showcase of free running.  Obviously you guys liked it, and that's cool.

I was curious...if I buy that new copy for $10 from Circuit City this week would I be able to apply that code to my old, lapsed account or would I have to start a new one?  I had a couple 60's and other mid-level characters on that old account.
9289  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Colin McRae: DiRT [360/PS3/PC] on: May 23, 2007, 11:35:44 PM
Yeah, the Colin McRae series isn't punishingly realistic at all, and I'm guessing with all the different types of vehicles this time it will be smack in the middle of the range as they try to appeal to both rally fans and off-road ragers.  Thankfully I am both!  smile

And of course you will be able to try out the demo tomorrow morning on your 360 or PC, so you can judge for yourself.

9291  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DiRT [360/PS3/PC] Impressions on: May 23, 2007, 01:19:59 PM
The demo is coming to Live and the PC internets near you Thursday morning!  To quote:
Quote
We think the demo is really going to wow a lot of people. It'll have a Super Stage crossover rally with Colin as your opponent, it's got buggy racing against 9 opponents which is absolute carnage and really shows off the car models, and then we have a hill climb with fantastic scenery and a Travis Pastrana time to beat. It's a great little package and it's out on May 24.

If you don't know what the game is, Colin McRae: DiRT (or just DiRT for us Americans, because we're dumb like that) is an off-road racing game with events like traditional timed rally, rally cross and hill climb, and vehicles ranging classic RWD rally cars to trophy trucks (and even Dakar-style Russian dump trucks).  You can check out some in-game footage over here (pardon the IGN link, but they're the only place I've seen with the videos).  Definitely check out the recent Crash one if you lust after vehicular carnage like me.  There is also a needlessly complicated official site, which has the trailer, screenshots and lots of other info.

The game is coming out on 360 and PC in June and to the PS3 in another few months.  To say I'm psyched about it is putting it mildly.  smile
9292  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ubidays '07 Videos on: May 23, 2007, 12:39:00 PM
I've been reading about Splinter Cell: Conviction and saw the video, and to me it looks and sounds like they are just piggybacking on the controls and technology developed for Assassin's Creed and basing their gameplay around that.  Hell, some of their quotes are nearly the exact same:  "We use an active stealth system where you need to blend in with the crowd to disappear", etc.

Sure, it's great to see innovation in a series, but with each Splinter Cell game it seems they are just getting further away from what they started out as.  Maybe instead of running a theme into the ground with yearly releases and then changing directions, they should start two different series' with opposing two year release cycles to keep them fresh.

Apparently Stallone wasn't finished with his midlife crisis project of trying to reconcile characters that were run into the ground.  After hearing about the suicide scene that they filmed for First Blood, I can't help but think it would have been a much better way to end it.

Check out this lenghty trailer, but beware that it shows some graphic violence.  I don't remember the other Rambo movies being quite so gorey, though I suppose that is the flavor of the day.

9294  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: What exactly does dual core mean? on: May 23, 2007, 02:21:50 AM
Multiple cores are not only good for multitasking in Windows, they are great for applications that are created to run on multiple threads.  Most games of the last couple years have been written with multi-threading in mind, which on a modern operating system should be able to take advantage of the multiple cores on these chips.  Offloading the processing of some of those threads to a second core will help speed up the application as a whole.  For example, in a recent game they may have simultaneous threads running for their sound, physics, AI, player input and another for the main game.

So yes, you should see plenty of speed in your current crop of games and even better prospects for the future.

The guy he chases isn't a stuntman - his name is Sebastien Foucan, and he's one of the original practitioners of Parkour.

You have to admit though, even so that was one cool scene.  That guy he was chasing had some Super Mario moves.

Man, did I get the kiddie version?  icon_wink  Both Starcraft and Brood War sitting on my shelf have Teen ratings on them.

Yeah, those two, as well as StarCraft 64, all show up as Teen on the ESRB website.  Have no fear.

I was speaking of the previously announced pricing scheme when they had two packages.  Now they split the difference but only give you one option.  Good for some, bad for most.

Yep, it only affects the boxed version.  The reason being was that stores were seriously undercutting the price of the boxed versions of digitally distributed games, both in a way of undercutting online distribution, and simple because they could use these games as loss leaders to draw in people to buy other things.

Also, episode 2 was slated to sell around $20-$30 right?  For most store execs, when they see that price point on a game, they immediately think bargain bin trash and they'll treat it as such unless the press is huge.

One good thing to note about this is that they're giving you three seperate CD/Steam keys.  One for HL2, one for Episode 1, and One for episode 2.  Thus, even though you are forced to buy all three, you can at least give away or sell the ones you don't want.  Not much consolation, but there's a lot of companies that wouldn't have done the same.

I would like to see it in print where they have said that this won't affect the Steam release.  I have a feeling that they won't be able to release a different version through Steam because it would risk seriously cutting into the retail product sales.

And the Black Box edition was previously targetted at $40 (with the full Orange at $60), which is pretty standard for many PC games these days.

9313  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Half-Life 2...buy it again! (because you have to) on: May 20, 2007, 06:19:31 AM
Sure, if you didn't buy the last two products that's great for you to be able to get it all in one package, and it was going to be an option all along.  For those of us who have already paid full price for two of these things in the past it would be nice to be able to just buy the new stuff.  Especially with something like Half-Life 2, where they already sold a bajillion copies of the original game and episode one.

And unbreakable, this has nothing to do with Vavle's digital distribution methods.  In fact, I'd argue that buying games from Steam is almost always costlier than a retail product, with the added problems of mandatory online authentication.

There's a moment during the second YouTube video where the presenter makes a big deal about how the Colossus' ability to step up and down a steep cliff makes StarCraft II "look more dynamic." (2:40) It's a nice effect, but compared to a game like Company of Heroes where things actually *are* dynamic -- artillery strikes leave craters where infantry can take cover, crumpled bodies are sent flying by grenade explosions, and destroyed tanks become roadway obstacles -- it's hard to get very excited about Blizzards "Eye Kay" technology.
-Autistic Angel

The "eye kay" technology he spoke of is an inverse kinematics system they use to dynamically animate the colossus on uneven terrain.  It has nothing to do with gameplay dynamics like you are talking about.
