Eff eff eff. Shit. I am THIS close to buying this game now. Goshdamnit.

Me too.  You bastards are really making me want to go pick this up.  After all, it's still three weeks before DiRT comes out.

BTW, is there any way to get that Best Buy $10 gift card without printing that thing out?  I don't have a printer at home and my work computer is only hooked into a specialty printer.
9242  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Have you ever regretted taking a new job? Career Advice on: May 31, 2007, 12:26:44 PM
I just took a new job about a month ago and so far I am mostly regretting it.  The pay and benefits are better, but the job is not what I was expecting and I don't really see the potential for advancement that they said it would have.  On the other hand, my old job was also a dead end so I'm not much worse off, but I wish I had continued looking for something else.  I'm not one to jump from job to job, but I'm wondering how long I should stick this one out before searching for something else.

So my wonderful advice is that I don't know because I'm in a similar situation.  smile

That said - now the game looks a whole lot better. Hope to see more impressions along that very positive line soon.

Well, I don't think they were even his impressions, they were just quotes of other people's impressions from other forums.  Which doesn't really do anything for me.

Check out the footage that's available on the Live Marketplace.  It looks quite good on there (to me, at least).

Also realize that when your view is following the Creeping Darkness thing there are filters applied to the screen.

Rally racing typically has people start at staggered intervals so that you're not near other cars.  You race for time.

I really really don't understand why the sport isn't more popular in America, it's so much more fun to watch than NASCAR.  Better crashes, too.

I think you answered that in your own post.  Americans like to see the defeat.  Just beating a number isn't as exciting as watching one car win while the others lose.  Though how racing in a circle for hours on end is interesting to anyone, I'll never know.

They did invent Rallycross like 40 years ago as a TV event, and yet that hasn't hopped across the pond either.  Something like that would be a million times more exciting for me to watch than NASCAR or Indy type stuff.  DiRT does include rallycross events, also.

I tried the demo and it played decently with the controller so I decided to just purchase it.

The thing to remember about this one is that you are controlling a little spring-driven car, so you can't just hold down the accelerator the whole time.  You have to strategically release it so it can recharge, like when you are going downhill or are in the air.  Otherwise you will really start to slow down and will get your butt kicked.

ugh. MT looks neat but I'll wait to see if they decide to charge for those before I buy it.

Well, from the press release:

For about half the price of the full game, players will be able to add additional races and mini-games to "Mad Tracks" by downloading the Bravo and/or Encore expansion packs. Each expansion pack includes an additional 15 nail-biting races and action-filled mini games for 350 Microsoft Points each, extending the fun and offering a great value.

Team Xbox review is out.  I'm pretty sure they liked it, but I was only able to read two paragraphs before the terrible writing gave me a headache.

That was a pretty worthless review.  It read more like a preview than anything.  You could have written that after playing the demo, and I wouldn't doubt if that's basically what happened..

Even though this is a cheaper and totally different type of racing game, I can't help but think that it was poor planning to release it concurrent with Forza 2.

You can get this on Midway Arcade Classics #1.  With all the games on there, it's well worth it.  The controls take a little getting used to, but they aren't too bad.

And you can pick that up for $8 used and get 22 other games for free!  smile

My favorite part of this demo is the pulled-back in-car POV.  The FoV feels "right" from this view and if I can get my projector room up and running, I can see the fun factor of this view projected on a 8-foot screen n front of me being absolutely off the scale.

Normally I dislike in-car views since I don't get a real feel for how the car is moving, but that pulled-back one is actually pretty nice.  I still prefer a behind-the-car view, but I could play like that.

I can tell you that the reason I never bought the original CoH was threefold: WWII again, burnout on RTS games, and perhaps most importantly the fact that everything I read made it seem like it needed a high-end PC to run it (even though I just tried the demo out and it ran fine with medium settings on my crappy old rig).

9259  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Recap 5-28-3007: YARGH!!!!! on: May 28, 2007, 11:57:39 PM
I picked up the XBox version of Star Wars: Republic Commando and played a few levels in that.  It's OK, but not even as good as much fun as I remember the demo being.  Stupid squadmates just stand there when those flying bug guys land right next to them and start attacking.  (obviously I didn't pick "uber fan" in the SW thread, since I don't even know what those guys are called).

I downloaded a 14-day trial of City of Heroes/Villians and gave that a try again.  I only played CoH for a couple months when it came out, and I'm not sure there is enough there to get me to go back to it.

Also played the Colin McRae: DiRT demo again a few times and some Arcade demos that have been sitting around for a while (Feeding Frenzy, Eets, Pinball).
9260  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (5/28) on: May 28, 2007, 11:20:18 PM
If I lived closer to my niece and nephew I would pick up Mario Party 8, but as it is I would just end up playing it mostly solo so I don't think I will.

If Forza 2 was the only racing game coming out this summer I would probably pick it up, but since DiRT is coming in a few weeks and then FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage after that, I will have to pass.

So that's a long way to say: nothing for me this week.
9261  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Ultimate Xbox 360 Racing Setup on: May 28, 2007, 03:43:09 AM
Hmm, if it's Forza 2 running on multiple monitors, they must have hidden the extra 360's because you need one running the game for each video output.  I'm not sure I would like being on the ground like that, but maybe the chair lifts up or something.

The demo is ok, nothing special. I guess what I've really liked about the Colin McRae series is having to make sure I don't mess up my car too bad between stages, and that's what's missing in this demo. I guess I've rent the game when it's released.

Obviously the demo is just three unconnected races with different vehicles.  I'm hoping that the career mode in this one is really in-depth.  I can see that there will be a ton of different races to compete in, so hopefully they are linked together well.

For those of you interested in the Microsoft wheel, they did just reduce the price to $129.99 in time for the Forza 2 release.  I'm not sure that I would play a game like this with a wheel, but some people like to.

Which are illegal, no?

I never thought they were illegal. Or is it considered a concealed weapon for some reason or another?

It appears that the wiki hivemind says they are illegal in one way or another (possession, selling, buying) for civilians in many states/jurisdictions, but legal for government and military personnel.  I had long ago heard they were illegal, although I thought that was more applicable to the out-the-front kind.

Given your genre preferences, I can't really see why you would have picked up a 360 in the first place, but now that you have one I'm not sure why you would get rid of it before the RPGs and such start hitting this year.  Plus, have you seen screenshots from the new Ace Combat?  That looks freaking amazing, and I don't even play flight sim games.

Any word on what the actual release date is supposed to be?   drool

Considering the 27th is a Sunday and the 29th a Tuesday, I would say the 29th is the date you can probably expect it in stores.

I agree with TML  on most everything he said.  I doubt the sim crowd will be all that satisfied, but I enjoyed the demo a lot and this will definitely be a day one purchase for me (even though FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is supposed to come out the week after).

The only slight disappointment is that it seems like Travis Pastrana is the featured voice/personality for the US instead of Colin McRae.  Not to slight Pastrana, but he's just so cheery and un-accented.  Tongue

Yeah, the Colin McRae series isn't punishingly realistic at all, and I'm guessing with all the different types of vehicles this time it will be smack in the middle of the range as they try to appeal to both rally fans and off-road ragers.  Thankfully I am both!  smile

And of course you will be able to try out the demo tomorrow morning on your 360 or PC, so you can judge for yourself.

The demo is coming to Live and the PC internets near you Thursday morning!  To quote:
Quote
We think the demo is really going to wow a lot of people. It'll have a Super Stage crossover rally with Colin as your opponent, it's got buggy racing against 9 opponents which is absolute carnage and really shows off the car models, and then we have a hill climb with fantastic scenery and a Travis Pastrana time to beat. It's a great little package and it's out on May 24.

If you don't know what the game is, Colin McRae: DiRT (or just DiRT for us Americans, because we're dumb like that) is an off-road racing game with events like traditional timed rally, rally cross and hill climb, and vehicles ranging classic RWD rally cars to trophy trucks (and even Dakar-style Russian dump trucks).  You can check out some in-game footage over here (pardon the IGN link, but they're the only place I've seen with the videos).  Definitely check out the recent Crash one if you lust after vehicular carnage like me.  There is also a needlessly complicated official site, which has the trailer, screenshots and lots of other info.

The game is coming out on 360 and PC in June and to the PS3 in another few months.  To say I'm psyched about it is putting it mildly.  smile
9278  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Ubidays '07 Videos on: May 23, 2007, 12:39:00 PM
I've been reading about Splinter Cell: Conviction and saw the video, and to me it looks and sounds like they are just piggybacking on the controls and technology developed for Assassin's Creed and basing their gameplay around that.  Hell, some of their quotes are nearly the exact same:  "We use an active stealth system where you need to blend in with the crowd to disappear", etc.

Sure, it's great to see innovation in a series, but with each Splinter Cell game it seems they are just getting further away from what they started out as.  Maybe instead of running a theme into the ground with yearly releases and then changing directions, they should start two different series' with opposing two year release cycles to keep them fresh.

Apparently Stallone wasn't finished with his midlife crisis project of trying to reconcile characters that were run into the ground.  After hearing about the suicide scene that they filmed for First Blood, I can't help but think it would have been a much better way to end it.

Check out this lenghty trailer, but beware that it shows some graphic violence.  I don't remember the other Rambo movies being quite so gorey, though I suppose that is the flavor of the day.

9280  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: What exactly does dual core mean? on: May 23, 2007, 02:21:50 AM
Multiple cores are not only good for multitasking in Windows, they are great for applications that are created to run on multiple threads.  Most games of the last couple years have been written with multi-threading in mind, which on a modern operating system should be able to take advantage of the multiple cores on these chips.  Offloading the processing of some of those threads to a second core will help speed up the application as a whole.  For example, in a recent game they may have simultaneous threads running for their sound, physics, AI, player input and another for the main game.

So yes, you should see plenty of speed in your current crop of games and even better prospects for the future.
