Quote from: Ironrod on May 11, 2008, 05:15:27 PM

Phillips screw heads were designed to slip more easily than a straight screwdriver. Early machines often overtightened straight-head screws. Ah, here we go -- from Wiki:

"The Phillips screw drive has slightly rounded corners in the tool recess, and was designed so the driver will slip out, or cam out, under high torque to prevent over-tightening. The Phillips Screw Company was founded in Oregon in 1933 by Henry F. Phillips, who bought the design from J. P. Thompson. Phillips was unable to manufacture the design, so he passed the patent to the American Screw Company, who was the first to manufacture it."

And yet, in the same breath, Wiki also says:

"Slot head has a single slot, and is driven by a flat-bladed screwdriver. The slotted screw is common in woodworking applications, but is not often seen in applications where a power driver would be used, due to the tendency of a power driver to slip out of the head and potentially damage the surrounding material."

So which one is it, Wiki? Which screw slips more easily?

They both slip, just in different ways.  The phillips head slips under high-torque situations but doesn't displace the screwdriver to the side, and with a slot head the screwdriver often slips out the side, potentially damaging the material.  Easy enough.

The "Forever Stamps" -of which I have a few books - have no price and are supposed to be valid regardless of price increases so I've no immediate concern about postal increases.

Although I enjoy the Internet as much or more as anyone else, I avoid online bill paying simply because I don't like allowing too much automatic withdrawals to anyone. Yeah, I know, many people are patting themselves on the back about not using snail mail, yawnnn, congratulating themselves on their cleverness about not having to write a check, but I prefer being actively aware of where, when, why, etc. my money is going. Otherwise, I'd be just puzzled about my expenses at the end of the year.

You can still do online bill pay without it being automatic, and in fact that is what I do.  I simply get an email reminder when my bill is ready (Comcast. T-Mobile, credit cards, power) and then go to the appropriate website and pay it from my checking account.  But you can keep patting yourself on the back if you feel like.

Have you seen how ugly those locust are? im sure a couple of bullets arnt going to faze them, maybe having to shoot them 50+ times before they die is a cheap way of making the game last longer?

I would say it's because of a mix of design and technical reasons.  It's a way to have each firefight last longer, make the player use the cover system to exchange fire and to allow for less enemies to be present at any time allowing for increased quality in each character.

I'm in the middle of downloading Planetside (yes, it's still active!) just a little curious how many people are still playing it.

I guess I didn't even realize it was still active.  It looks like the last data has for it was from 2006 or something so no idea where to find that info.

My only gripe is with the colors. Like in GoW, GoW2 appears to be using 3-4 colors total for everything.

GoW is certainly on the far end of the monocrhomatic scale, but a lot of games have been going more towards that "realistic" look (Skate, Burnout, GTA4) and it bugs me.  I spents lots of money on this console and HDTV, I want to see some fucking colors, damnit!  Real life is not that washed out.

The big thing with me not liking WW2 shooters is the crappy iron sights.  I just can't use that to aim and much prefer a scope, dot, reticule or something along those lines.

Of course I think the general quality will likely be a bit lower in the Treyarch developed CoD5 anyway, so that doesn't help.

You have always wanted one but you didn't even know what they were? Just the idea of a frozen product with the word steak in it's name got you excited?

I thought they were a pre made philly cheese steak mini sandwich that you just needed to microwave or toast..seems I was mistaken. Maybe Ill stick to the Stouffers panini bread frozen microwave sandwiches instead.

If you find the Healthy Choice panini sandwiches on sale (usually for about $2 around here) they are the tastiest in my opinion.  Cheese steak, smoked chicken, chicken basil...yumm.

one more little thing worth mentioning...they really improved the replay system from DiRT.  while you could do replays in DiRT, it always bothered me that you couldn't use different buttons on the controller to carry out the various had to actually move between the buttons on-screen and hit the A button to select them.  now you can smoothly go back and forth through a race at various speeds (both fast and slow), pause the action instantly, and watch the carnage of a big wreck in all its splendor.  they are still missing a photo option though...

You can also rewind to the point before you spun out/crashed/whatever so that if you have one tragic accident you don't have to start the whole race over.  I haven't really messed with that aspect much, but it seems like it could be a very good thing to avoid re-running a whole race when you crash on the last lap (you can also select Pro mode to turn it off and get better scores if you are hardcore).

They took a lot of the Advanced options out in this last patch, it seems.  They may have reverted to forcing shader 2.0 for now.  I do know that the patch fixed my crazy-long load times and frequent hitching when playing.  I haven't had it crash yet, either, but I haven't played for that long since the new patch.

I have mixed feelings about the success of GTA. Sure it's fun and in some ways artful, but it's also incredibly sexist and juvenile and exploitative and base. And you know tons of kids are playing it, M rating or no. This is not exactly gaming's best foot forward when this thing breaks all sales records.

And yet it's had half a billion dollars worth of sales.  I think the fact that this game sells so well says that this is what the people want.  You can't blame the game for what it says about us.  If the game was truly offensive, it wouldn't sell so well.

Precisely.  Look at Postal, for instance.

Well, there's a difference between a good game with offensive material and a shit game made only to be offensive.

That's pretty close to the system I use at work (although I have 7950 w/ 512 of RAM) and I think you will get decent performance at medium settings.  Hopefully the patch they release will put an end to the hitching and that will make the performance seem much better overall.

It depends on the team but they are pretty good and I think they can deliver.  They've done Mercenaries, Star Wars Battlefront 1&2, Destroy All Humans! 1&2, and the Full Spectrum Warrior games.  They're working on Mercenaries 2 and Sabateur, which both look very cool.

I hope they don't turn this into a game where every punch I throw I have to watch an animation of what just happened.  IE.  I throw a punch and miss and have to watch the animation of me throwing a punch and missing........

Yeah, this sounds kind of cool but if it results in slower, unresponsive gameplay I am not going to be happy with that.

Those free-month (or 2-week) things are only for new customers.  You may be able to trick their system by signing up with a different email address (I did that for the free trial of GameFly a couple times) or it may use your actual address in the check in which case you just need to move and change your name.  slywink

I would argue that Stuntman is a poor indicator of how much you'll like Stuntman Ignition.  From what I remember, there were some fairly hefty loading times for retries in the first one, and the stunts were very unforgiving.  Ignition removes the loading times, and the stunts are more forgiving.  I didn't like Stuntman, but loved Ignition.

OK, well, if I think that I would like it with easier stunts and shorter loading times, I will get Stuntman 2 smile

He's talking about Stuntman: Ignition on the Xbox 360, not Stuntman 2.

I think we're talking about the same thing.

Yeah, I guess so.  For some reason I was thinking that there was actually a Stuntman 2 released like a year after the first, but I can find no record of it.  Weird.
