I can't believe that the PS2 sold almost 300,000 units whereas the Xbox only sold 500

Not a big surprise since the XBox is no longer in production, hasn't been for quite a while and isn't widely available anywhere, really.  Plus, the PS2 still has some great games that that just came out (Guitar Hero 2, God of War 2, etc) whereas Microsoft long ago turned all focus to the 360.

I will give SSX Blur a little more time and see how much it can frustrate me.  On Sunday I'll be hanging out and introducing a buddy of mine to the Wii, so I'll probably play some Wii Sports with him and his wife.

Of course, there's always Crackdown with the new Hidden Orb map...
9243  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Tiger Woods - Wii on: March 16, 2007, 04:53:30 AM
I haven't played the game so I can't give true advice, but one thing that occurred to me is that if you are in a stance where on a full backswing the Wiimote is facing back over your neck and towards the TV (and sensor bar) perhaps when it "see"s the sensor bar it is recalibrating the wiimote position for pointing which then screws up how it interprets the swing?

It should be easy enough to test if that is the case, you could just take swings that don't go quite back that far so the Wiimote's pointer end doesn't face the sensor bar, or you could turn your stance so that your body is facing the TV and the Wiimote shouldn't ever "look" in that direction.
9244  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: MP3 Blogs - Question on: March 16, 2007, 04:33:32 AM
I don't have much to contribute as far as MP3 blogs (mostly because I have never read one in my life), but if you want to try something kind of neat that might suggest some new music based on analyzed styles of the music you already like, check out Pandora created with the "Music Genome Project".  It will tell you why it has suggested something and of course you can give your feedback of if you like it or never want to hear that again.

Ahh, a clean desktop. I've forgotten what those are like. I'd post mine but my machine imploded this week and I'm not interested in trying to fix it until I can do so without screaming at it in rage.

Frankly, I don't understand why people don't have clean desktops (or at most like 5 icons on it). I hate when a desktop becomes a clutter of icons with a picture buried underneath. I mean, that's why you have the Program Launcher for cripes sake. biggrin

No, that is what a desktop is for.  You put things on it.  My Programs list is three pages wide and since they aren't in any logical freaking order or are hidden in some bizarre publisher/developer folder it is actually more difficult to find things on there than to have program/game icons directly on my desktop.  I am a very visual person and can usually remember right where the icon was that I wanted and the icons are distinct rather than just more folders.

And how many times do you just sit and look at your desktop picture anyway?  Either I have some program(s) running or I'm not sitting at my computer.  I see my desktop between closing out one program and starting something else, and that's about it.

I scored well in Survival, Geek, Sports(?), Military(?).  I don't think I even got any questions on Film or Vocabulary (or some other things) so I don't think they can accurately judge me on that.

What about playing standard DVDs, though?  Won't those still be region coded to not work on a Japanese PS3?
9248  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii Friend Codes To Be Title Specific on: March 15, 2007, 02:50:01 PM
No kidding, the only reason I went to the trouble to input all of those damn numbers by hand was because I figured I would never have to do it again, so I might as well do them all right away.  So much for that plan.
9249  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Crysis: Screenshots vs. Real world (56K warning) on: March 15, 2007, 04:26:19 AM
The one thing that I really hated about FarCry was that as soon as you shot or made noise the AI could immediately detect and shoot at you very accurately through a long distance even with foliage and whatnot all over the place.  Often in heavy jungle they could get off many shots or even kill me before I figured out where they were, and that's just not fun gameplay.
9250  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: CPU Temperature Chart on: March 15, 2007, 04:22:22 AM
Most (if not all, perhaps) modern motherboards allow you to monitor the CPU temp in the BIOS and you can also usually download a system utility from the manufacturer to do the same thing from within Windows.

Subway doesn't do the 'V' cut anymore?  I never did like that.  I guess I never really liked their sandwiches that much anyway which is why I didn't know they changed their cutting style.

Most of the time I average about $25-30 for electricity, but since I have electric heat it goes to about $50 for a few winter months.  Last year's average calculated out to just about $33 per month.

My daughter loves DDR for our PS2 so I was naturally interested in hearing more about the 360 version. But I'm deathly afraid of her dancing around and pounding on the ground in the same room as my 360 when it's running (burning the discs). Isn't this just asking for trouble?

I'm on a single story on a concrete slab... I doubt my jumping around is going to disturb the 360 much.... YMMV.

I've only played through the intro beginner part and then the very start of the "career mode", I forget what it's called. The career mode looks like it could br pretty cool with dance-offs to earn monmey and I guess get background dancers and apparently new clothes based on what Ron hinted at above, though I haven't seen that part yet. The music is mostly typical DDR pop crap that I would never listen to if I weren't dancing to it. I'm not very good at the game and don't care about creating my own sets of steps or anything like that. I hear that stuff is available, but I don't care. In summary, I am probably the worst person to get DDR impressions from. slywink

The only other home DDR game I've had is Extreme for the original xbox and it was ok, though I think I was disappointed by the lack of training options, which apparently this one has but I don't really need them now. The pad that comes with the bundle appears to be identical to what came with the xbox version except for the connector. It is servicable, but slides around a bit on my rug, but not so bad I can't get through a song before fixing it.

I'll try the up/down arrows tonight ron, I swear I tried every button on the pad, but I may have missed something.

I think my review will be aimed pretty squarely at you and folks like you - this is my first DDR title.  All the reviews I've seen for DDR games are done by veterans of the series, mine will be from a newb perspective. smile

Excellent!  I've kind of become interested in this game if for no other reason than to give me an excuse to get some more exercise so I'd like to hear an opinion that doesn't only say "If you've played the 20 other versions you know what to expect here, but more".

I have looked for a used copy a few times but haven't seen any around.  Which is ironic, because there are about a million used copies of the first and second ones whereever I go.

Funny; after hearing this morning that she's Katie Holmes replacement in the new Batman movie, I was wishing she'd go away before they can start filming...  (Not that Katie Holmes was good, but I have problems with female 'love interests' who are unattractive.)

Some of us happen to think Maggie is attractive, so maybe you should be the one on the shuttle to the sun.  I said good day sir!  slywink

9264  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Recap 3-12-07 (under new management, try the veal!) on: March 12, 2007, 02:31:54 PM
I played a bit of Wii Sports and then picked up SSX Blur which is both very cool (with the tilt carving controls) and frustratingly inconsistent (with the tricks and my lack of coordination).  I kind of wish I hadn't bought it, but maybe given more time it will become decent overall.
9265  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Trackmania United on: March 11, 2007, 08:50:11 PM
After reading this thread I ended up downloading the free TrackMania Nations thing to check it out and was pleasantly surprised.  I'm not really into competitive online play, but it comes with something like 80 or 90 single player "training" tracks so I've been playing those and it has reminded me how much I liked the first game.

I have to say that it also looks really good and runs incredibly well on my lil machine, so that was a nice bonus.  With details on cars and backgrounds set to high it benchmarked at about 50fps.

I might just have to try and track down a copy of TM United.  Kobra, do you know if it supports gamepads?  Playing with the keyboard just inflames my wrist/hand so I would like to pick up one of these and use my 360 gamepad.

9268  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Silverfall Impressions on: March 11, 2007, 07:03:13 AM
For those that are into such things, you can now pre-purchase Silverfall via Steam and get ready to play it on the 20th.  As usual, it's the same $39.95 as retail stores.

If they ever get to the point where they have enough clout to discount the downloaded versions I might consider buying something that way.  Otherwise I prefer to have the physical media and it's usually easy enough to wait a week or two to save a few bucks.

You end up having to do that "Hit 'O'" minigame thing a few times (I seem to remember about 4) to smack that hydra head into the mast and break it off.  What really annoyed me about that was that his health kept regenerating and you don't get any real indication that you are making progress.  I think the time that I actually finished him off he was back up to 3/4 health.  A very poor system of player feedback.

To resurrect this thread a bit, if you want to check out Peter Molyneux demonstrating some gameplay elements from Fable 2 (especially the dog "sidekick"), check out this video over at IGN.  Even though it just shows a little test level Peter is long winded so the video is pretty lengthy (25 minutes of demonstration + 5 of Q&A), but it does give me some hope for this one to be innovative and worthwhile when it finally comes out.  I wouldn't be expecting this one to ship anytime soon (like this year anytime).

Looks really good.  I hope that the control scheme is smooth.  I had a lot of problems with the golf game on Wii Sports as it didn't seem to recognize my actions very well...if at all sometimes.

Yeah, I had some of the same problems and when my mom was playing it often registered her backswing as a real swing.  My biggest problem though was probably getting a soft putt to register without going over a full bar of strength.

9275  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Silverfall Impressions on: March 10, 2007, 05:55:21 PM
I kind of enjoyed the demo but I had to turn the graphics down a lot to get it to run smooth and that takes away some of the charm for me.  (to be fair, I have a pretty old system: 2600+, 6600GT, 1GB)

It also felt maybe just a little too open as I felt that the map was wide open and I didn't have much direction.  I think for this type of game I'd like something in between Titan Quest's mostly linear levels and this more open world.
