9201  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Public transportation too expensive? on: April 18, 2007, 02:36:05 AM
I never had a problem with the price of the metro bus system around Seattle (the east-side, actually), but the few times I used it the time it took compared to driving was ridiculous.  If something triples my commute time or more in addition to making me walk several blocks in the rain, I'm sure as hell not going to use it if I have a choice.
9202  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Favorite band time! on: April 18, 2007, 02:30:51 AM
I'm not very good at making these lists because I always forget something important, and I like a lot of bands, but here's some from whom I will buy a new album sight unseen (or sound unheard...whatever).

Rage Against the Machine
Tom Waits
Modest Mouse
A Perfect Circle
The Black Keys

Niiiice!  thumbsup

I am also curious to hear what you have to say about the experience on a PC.  Graphics look like crap?  Is the multiplayer well implemented?  Does it even work without the Windows Live crap?

Um, Venture Bros is on Cartoon Network, not Comedy Central.

I will probably add Last King of Scotland to my queue.
9205  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Armed Assault demo on: April 17, 2007, 03:55:05 AM
I seem to remember somebody around here was interested in Armed Assault and I see that a demo just came out.  It comes with three single player and three multiplayer maps, and the improvements/optimizations that were made to the UK version of the game apparently.

I'm too lazy to copy a bunch of URLs, but you can see all the ones listed in this Blue's News post

I added three more to my list: Counter-Clock World by Philip K. Dick, White Noise by Don DeLillo, and Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler.  I'm about to start The Road, and kind of wish I had done so before it became Oprah's new bookclub thing, but I guess I will have to live with looking like a bandwagon jumper.  Or hangeron-er.  Or whatever.

9211  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: How to clear the 360 HD cache? on: April 17, 2007, 02:11:44 AM
I think the cache it is talking about clearing is the system area where it keeps the pagefile and updated executables for games.  That would mean the next time you insert any game that had an update (or an original XBox game) it would have to download the update for that game (or BC) again, but that's about it.  As far as I know it shouldn't affect the user portion of the hard drive at all, so your save files, profiles, downloads and everything should be fine.

I think it's funny that Sierra has resurrected their "3D Ultra" brand name.  I was sure that had died years ago.  The game looks like it might be good fun, though.
9213  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (4/16) on: April 16, 2007, 02:50:50 PM

9216  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Recap 4-16-2007: The Quick and Dirty Edition on: April 16, 2007, 04:38:33 AM
I bought and played a couple cheap, used original XBox games on my 360: Super Monkey Ball Deluxe and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

It took me a while to get back into the MK fighting mode (I mostly only play Soul Calibur) but I'm getting the hang of it and I actually really like the Konquest mode for fighting mobs of enemies.  Motor Kombat isn't as fun as I was hoping it would be, though.

Um, you know not all 360 games released at the $60 price point right?

Well if you check EB's site or IGN or whatever they all report a price of $59.99 for the 360/PS3 versions and $49.99 for the PC.  It could be that they are wrong, but considering the game is supposed to ship next month I think chances are that they might be right.

So back to the topic at hand: did anybody try out the demo, and is it any fun?
9218  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Monster Madness demo on Live on: April 16, 2007, 03:37:54 AM
So I see a demo for Monster Madnesswas put up on Live this last week.  Has anybody given it a try?  My Gold subscription ran out and it won't be available for us of the unwashed masses until Thursday this week.

For the uninformed, Monster Madness is a top-down shooter for up to 4 players (16 online) with a bunch of weapons and some vehicles and such.  It uses the Unreal engine for nifty this and that.

When I first read about this game, I thought it would have been an excellent showcase title for what Live Arcade could (and should) be, but I guess they are going the retail route.  And sadly full-price, at that.  I'd like to see an old-school style game like this succeed, but I don't think it can really find an audience at $60.

I don't get it either. Personally, I prefer the PS2/PS3's controller (short of that horrid d-pad). I especially hate the 360's d-pad, and never liked how the analog sticks are positioned.

I on the other hand prefer the 360 over the PS2/3 controller in every way.

Me too.
9220  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: WARNING - 360 Bricking Update for GHII on: April 15, 2007, 08:23:47 PM
The problem is that from all the reports I've seen it isn't an acutal "bricking" of the system (like a bad BIOS overwrite or something) but they get lockups and red rings some period after they update the game and then play for a little bit.  It's hard to prove direct causality for something like that, and I doubt we will hear official word about it.

9223  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: WARNING - 360 Bricking Update for GHII on: April 15, 2007, 06:06:59 PM
How in the why frick... a single game patch should not brick a system.  I can understand it causing that game to lock up (although that shouldn't happen, either), but it shouldn't affect the system itself.  Sweet jebus.

Yeah, I saw that on IGN the other day.  It looks like it might be a neat combination of traditional point-n-click adventure gaming with some Japanese platform/adventure/rpg type game.  I like the art style, dislike the lack of voice acting, and think I will have to see some more gameplay to make a real judgement.

It's just been a bit of a disaster in development.

Is disaster the right word here? Silicon Knights is known for their delays, I figured the game was on a normal cycle rather than a disastrous one.

As Metallicorphan's screens demonstrate there are delays then there are delays.  Too Human was originally in development for PS1, then moved to Gamecube, then moved to 360.

It's not as if this is the exact same game they were developing back then, this is obviously new technology (Unreal Engine 3) and assets even though it uses similar gameplay concepts and story/background.

I think a lot of the delays were because the game was nearing completion for the PS1 when Silicon Knights became a second party developer for Nintendo, which lead them to try and rework the game for them.  Who knows what sort of complications/arrangements went on there to make them move to Microsoft's 360.

9230  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Too Human Footage on: April 14, 2007, 09:09:00 PM
I think the footage looks really good and the game has a lot of promise.  I didn't realize his had seperate classes and so many RPG-lite qualities similar to Diablo, but that's cool.

My big concern is their "cinematic camera" that takes all camera control away from the player.  I have never been happy with games that do this and would much rather at least have the option to play from behind my character at all times.  There's nothing I hate more than running down a hallway and then having the camera turn and make me run into a wall or off a cliff of some such crap.

Where did you hear this!?  I'd love that as long as it's 2nd edition rules.  I paid way too much for the 2nd edition and all but the dragon expansion a few years back off ebay.

IGN has some details that were revealed during Capcom's spring gamer's day conference (where they also revealed Super Puzzle Fighter 2 HD, Rocketmen, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for the console networks).

I only tried the one song a couple times (which only had hard available).  I didn't realize the other song had the Easy and Medium difficulties.
9233  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA]Boom,boom rocket on: April 13, 2007, 02:52:05 PM
I played this for a couple minutes and then deleted it.  I don't think giving people only the Hard difficulty to try out was really a smart choice, as it certainly turned me off the game.

I hit the face buttons with my thumb, and making me hit two of them at the exact same time after only 10 seconds of playing made me say that "this just isn't for me".  But I guess I'm not really into that sort of game anyway, which is one of the reasons I haven't bothered to try Guitar Hero.
9234  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bethesda buys the Fallout IP on: April 13, 2007, 04:28:23 AM
They have been licensing the IP and developing a Fallout game, but now they officially own and control it for current and future products.
9235  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bethesda buys the Fallout IP on: April 13, 2007, 02:56:22 AM
You can see the news item over at No Mutants Allowed, which they gleamed from some SEC filing.

Basically Bethesda paid Interplay $5.75 million for the IP and Interplay retains the rights to develop an MMO based on the license over the next few years with a percentage going back to Bethesda.

This could probably go in Console or PC Gaming, but since Console seems to get higher traffic/responses, it sits here.

9238  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gamefly question on: April 12, 2007, 03:02:55 PM
I don't have any personal experience with them, but I know when I looked for somebody else that GamezNFlix has some East Coast distribution centers.  Here's from their About Us page: "At present, GameZnFlix ships from nine distribution facilities, located near Boston, Washington D.C., Orlando, Franklin, KY, Dallas, Denver, Seattle, Sacremento and Los Angeles. A distribution center in the mid-west is slated to open in the coming months."

I don't know about their game avaiablity compared to Gamefly, but it might be worth trying for a month to find out.

I heard attacks are with the stylus, and movement with the d-pad.

If you make a downward slash, it swings the sword.  If you make an upward movement, it throws a shuriken.

Is this sort of nonsense really any better or easier than just pushing buttons?  Not only are you requiring players to learn and adapt to a new, arbitrary control scheme but there is the inherant inconsistency with that sort of input.
