Mostly lots of killing and getting covered in buckets of blood in Tenchu Z and maybe a bit of Forza 2.

30 is plenty, if consistent.
60 dropping to 45 isn't that bad. 30 dropping to 15 is a big problem.

How does one tell what the framerate is?

I hear guys on podcasts say it was running at a smooth 60 fps. How do you check that?

For most console games they don't, they're just talking out their asses.  If the developers tell them it's a smooth 60 fps and they don't see any major hitches they will believe it and spew it back out for the masses.

I enjoyed Dungeon Siege, but mostly because we played it at a couple all-night LAN parties with friends at the time.  As a single player game it certainly had it's sore points.

DS sales are surprising too. Who knew?

You never hear about this. Makes me wonder why it's never mentioned in here?

We really need to talk up Nintendo's success more.

Ooh, Devil is making snarky comments about Nintendo and our supposedly ravenous fanboys.  How unexpected.

I see that IGN has posted a surprisingly thorough Forza 2 guide which you can actually read for free, no subscription necessary.  It has some good Racing 101 general info and then goes into tuning and upgrades with a career walkthrough to come later I guess.
9206  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage [360] on: June 15, 2007, 12:44:34 AM
Reports are that this one has just gone gold, and will be released on June 22nd in an attempt to royally screw with me.  That is the same week as Dirt, only three weeks after Forza.  Why is it that three awesome racing games all get released within a month?  In the middle of what is supposed to be the dead time!

Unless they release a demo I don't know if this will get the audience it deserves.  Which is a shame, because the actual racing in these games is quite enjoyable, and the derbies and minigames add a lot on top of that.

The newest screenshots (like these at VE) look better than ever.  There is also a new homepage with the usual stuff.

I just saw that this demo is now available in the Live Marketplace as well as a video trailer.  All I really know about the game is that it is a 3D space shooter remake of the old side scroller (even though this isn't side scrolling).  Like an action-y Wing Commander type thing maybe.

I don't usually upgrade to the slicks, I usually go with the first or second upgraded tire and I still get that problem.  That kind of makes it a worthless upgrade if they degrade that fast.

I like Catan quite a bit, but I would be more willing to play it if the text wasn't so small.  On the monitor I play my 360 on I have to move my chair a few feet forward just so I can read the text.

Geometry Wars is cool, but I'm just not very good at it.

I also like Mad Tracks, but I'm miffed at the limited number of tracks they included.  I know some people like the minigames, but I would rather have more races.
9214  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Car porn (Forza 2) on: June 14, 2007, 12:58:31 AM
My problem with the single player career is that I will often enter a race and see that there is one S class car and then others all the way down to C or D.  If I pick a middle of the pack car there is no way I can keep up with the super fast one, but if I choose one competitive with him I just blow away all the rest of the cars.

I'm really surprised more of the races aren't limited by class or PI.

Thanks for the reply, ericb.  I've found that the problem doesn't happen if I change from HTML to Plain Text or Rich Text, or if I change it to use Word as my email editor.

It looks like that site you linked to may have found the culprit as being SpyBot's immunization having added so many entries to the restricted sites in the registry.  I'm assuming that one of the security updates from Microsoft in the last few weeks must have changed how it was checking the restricted sites in HTML and that was just hammering my system when I was typing in an HTML email.

So I guess the solution is to undo the immunization from SpyBot and go back to zero restricted sites.  Boo.

I tend to get that same sort of problem, juniordan.  About 2/3 of the way through a race my tires just start to get all slippery even though they are still green.  It's like they are stickier before they get warmed up and then it all goes to hell.  It really annoys me when I've been running really well in first and then fall back several places just before the end of a race because my handling is shot.
9218  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Outlook problem on: June 13, 2007, 01:08:46 PM
Yes, I use MS Outlook and no I'm not looking for another program (well, not yet anyway).

With that out of the way, for the last couple weeks I've been having a very odd, suspicious thing happening in Outlook.  When I am typing in a message my response time is extremely slow.  I can type a whole paragraph before any of it shows up on the screen.  I basically have to type out a sentence and then wait 10-15 seconds before it appears.  This only happens in Outlook, not in IE or Word or anywhere else I have seen.

I do run several anti-spam/adware programs (Adaware, SpyBlaster, a-squared Free and occasionally SpyBot) and none of them are picking anything up other than a couple cookie after browsing online.  I also have Nod32 anti-virus running and that hasn't found anything either.  All are updated daily.

I am the only user on this computer and I can't think of anything I have installed that would have caused this, although I have done regular updates on stuff (AV, Windows/IE, etc) and installed a couple things.  I've tried closing out processes until I can find the culprit but that hasn't lead to anything yet.  I even temporarily tried uninstalling my anti-virus thinking it may have been it's email monitoring thing causing it.

This is a really annoying problem and I am afraid it may be a key logging program (although why it would only affect Outlook baffles me).  Any suggestions or solutions?
9219  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]Tenchu Z on: June 13, 2007, 12:45:17 PM
I wanted this game to be so cool and redeem the series.  I still want to play it and like it...maybe if I can find it for rent I will go that route instead of a purchase.  I had gotten myself all warmed up for buying it, though.

Honestly, most of the things they knock the game for, like the graphics and disjointed story, don't mean much to me anyway for Tenchu.  I just want to be a stealthy ninja and execute some evil mofos.

Also, it's suspicious that the one thing that the reviews fail to address is the multiplayer options.  GameSpot totally glosses over it and the other site said they are having internet issues and couldn't try it out (but obviously not enough issues to stop them from posting the review, eh?).

It looks like it would take a lot to make that into an actual fun game.  Plus, they are running it on the Source engine and I doubt any publisher would want to spend the money to license that for a niche indie game.

It is annoying, to me, that cars that are built with traction control or ABS don't have these features automatically toggled in the game. I know my '69 Charger didn't have ABS, so I feel like I shouldn't have to turn it off in the game to model the car. I also know the newer cars DO ahve traction control, but I'd have to turn it on to use it in game. I think they should patch a "default" setting into the game to let us use the cars as they were (plus some insane upgrades).

I think it's usually more of a case where if a player uses driving aids like TCS and ABS they will likely use them for every car they drive, rather than only on those for which is was an option.

There is a new trailer up over at the official site in the downloads section, but it unfortunately doesn't show any real game footage.  There are some screenshots at the top of the News and Game Info pages, though.

By the way, am I the only one for whom playing high def Quicktime movies totally sucks?  Their player gives me like 1 frame a second on something like this and I find it a joke that I can run full screen real-time rendered games 60 times faster than their shitty video playback.  (which is why I use the VLC media player for them, but still)

Interstate '82.  In so many ways they messed this up.  The game play was no where near as fun.  The dialog wasn't cute or clever.  The story was lame rather then cheeky.  I so wanted more after I'76 that this was a huge disappointment to me.

Absolutely!  Interstate '76 is one of my all-time favorite PC games, and '82 really dropped the ball in so many ways.
9234  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360]Tenchu Z on: June 11, 2007, 04:22:52 AM
I tried the demo and enjoyed it.  While it isn't great it is about what I expected since I had played the Japanese demo (though I liked that level better than this new one).  They really didn't do a good job of explaining the gameplay and mechanics, like how to read the Ki "stealth" Meter or do certain moves.  The lack of save points and the deadly boss battle really anger me, too.

The graphics are serviceable but not nearly as good as one would hope on the 360.  That's been the same story with every Tenchu ever made, though.  I agree that some of those faces in the customization part are laughably terrible.

If you do play the demo, don't forget about your items.  The one on the far right is your grappling hook and you can shoot it by clicking the right stick, aiming at a ledge/roof above you and then hitting Left Button to shoot it.  The other items are pretty cool and useful, too.  Shuriken, poisoned rice balls, grenades, health, smoke balls that make you invisible for a short time, etc.

When you grab a guard from behind, you can also drag them into a dark alley before you execute them, or you can grab dead bodies and take them into the shadows.  According to the website there are other attacks like a choke hold, spin kick and spinning slash, although I have no idea how to pull those off (if they are in the demo).

Given my weakness for stealthy ninjas, I may end up buying this one.  I can understand wanting to wait for a good price drop, though.

First off, which game are you talking about?

Secondly, there are different types of clans.  Some are just a loose gathering of friends who play together when they see each other online, and some do it competitively with practice times and their own servers and such.

If you're just getting random invites I'm guessing it can't be too hardcore.  And if you join and don't like it, it's not like la Cosa Nostra where you can't leave, ya know?  slywink  Plus, you can always just talk to the person who is inviting you and see what they have to say about it.

My real life settings for an STi... not sure if these work in game:

My car has the imported Japanese suspension, which should be identical to the stock ones in the game (in theory).  However, they are also not adjustable, so I don't have any ride height/spring settings.  Same with struts.

Camber: Rear -2 degrees. Front -3.25 degrees
Toe: Rear 0mm. Front 2mm.
Sways: Rear 3/3.  Front 1/3. (I think my sway bars have 3 settings on them... not sure how this correlates to in game)
Track Tire Pressure: Front 28 psi, Rear 25 psi.

What this *should* do:
In it's default form, the STi likes to understeer a lot.  You have to be pretty aggressive with it to induce any sort of oversteer.  This setup should push it *slightly* to the oversteer side of neutral.  Turn in should be greatly improved, and mild oversteer should be easily induced with either a mash of the throttle or a violent lift of the throttle during the turn.  Whether this setting actually translates to the game... I dunno.

Simply judging by my limited experience in Forza2, if you are trying to correct for understeer, shouldn't your front tire pressure be lower than your rear?  That will give those front tires more traction and allow the rear ones to slip more readily.  That has been my experience and it helped my STi slaughter the cars in some exhibition races last night.
9239  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Forza 2 tips and tricks on: June 11, 2007, 01:05:47 AM
Gellar, the one thing I notice is that your little tip sheet there says to increase/decrease your tire pressure by 2.5 PSI each time.  Forza only goes by single PSI increments from what I've seen, and even then changing just one or two PSI can be a pretty big increase or decrease in handling.
