9121  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gears of War Patch This Week on: January 09, 2007, 03:27:21 AM
I'm just glad to see somebody address (and fix) the damn 4:3 VGA problem!  This issue is in multiple games now and Epic are the first people I've seen actually acknowledge it.
9122  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Live Arcade Game This Week Is..... on: January 09, 2007, 03:24:02 AM
While Ms Pac-Man is certainly better than Pac-Man, this is still a disappointing showing for the Arcade.  Somebody needs to kick this fucker into overdrive.

Quote from: Lee on January 09, 2007, 02:51:11 AM

What exactly is the difference between Pacman and the Miss version? Besides the bow of course.

- Ms Pac-Man moves faster than the old man
- There are 4 different mazes instead of the same one over and over
- Three of those mazes have two sets of warp tunnels instead of one
- Pseudo random ghost movement instead of patterned
- Two pieces of fruit pop out and float around
- Clyde got a sex change and is now Sue

I agree that any time something that expensive and fragile is sent in the mail you should get tracking and insurance on it.

And I'm not sure why everyone just assumes that the guy didn't mail it.  Things do get misrouted, lost, damaged, etc in the mail.  Having worked security in a DHL sorting hub I have seen quite a fewpackages whose labels were ripped off (although obviously the vast minority) and with no other form of information inside to indicate sender or receiver so it just sits there until it gets sent back to the corporate hub.
9126  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Newsflash: US Military attacked on Mexican border. on: January 07, 2007, 06:22:03 PM
This wasn't even immigrant related, it is a drug traffic problem.  With the crackdown on meth production facilities on the west coast and the regulation of pseudoephedrine products in the US, it has pushed a lot of the manufacturing south of the border which means it needs to get across for distribution.

9129  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Anyone interested in Vanguard? on: January 06, 2007, 11:30:41 PM
One thing I haven't seen much mention of yet is whether you can do well soloing or if you pretty much need a group.  I know it sounds contrary to the genre, but I often prefer to go out and do quests on my own (or with one or two people) and it would be nice to have that option for the majority of the game.  I thought WoW had a pretty good amount of solo-able and small group stuff, although late in the game you are pretty much SOL since it's all huge raid instances.  That was the main reason I quit playing the game.
9130  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Non-mainstream music recommendations on: January 06, 2007, 10:03:46 PM
I'm a huge fan of Eels (also on myspace, but the actual homepage has lots of videos).  I would also recommend the ever awesome Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits and I have a weak spot for Deftones.

Some other bands that my friends dig (not that I don't like them, they are just more passionate fans than I) that might be in your vein are M. Ward, Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, My Morning Jacket, Devotchka, The Flaming Lips, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Califone, Kid Dakota and Sparklehorse

Cripes, I can't believe there were MySpace pages for all of those bands/people.  I guess it's a sign of the times.  The end is near.
9131  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Crackdown! on: January 06, 2007, 09:39:19 PM
Yeah, I've never been a huge fan of sandbox-only type play, but for this one I'm willing to give it a try.  Hopefully there is at least some sort of story/information conveyed to the player so you know what your options are and don't feel lost and directionless.
9132  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Crackdown! on: January 06, 2007, 07:23:22 PM
There's a pretty lengthy interview with the lead designer of Crackdown over at FiringSquad where they cover all sorts of things about the game.

The one thing that has me a little concerned, though, is the total openness of the world with seemingly no real story or missions to propel the player along.  I love screwing around and doing all sorts of crazy things in these games as much as the next guy (if not more), but I also like to be able to do a mission or two now and then to feel like I'm making progress.  I guess it might not be bad as long as they clearly show the player where the gang bosses and kingpins are and the details of their relationship like he explained in the interview.

I also had to go back to IGN to check out those awesome videos...they get me excited every damn time!  Less than two weeks until we can check out the demo.
9133  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Anyone interested in Vanguard? on: January 06, 2007, 04:58:39 PM
Heh, not to rip on your wolfguy, but I think it looks silly to have a perfect wolf head on top of a normal, fully erect human body.  Maybe make it more like werewolf where the head and body are shaped half like an animal and half like a human or something, but to just jam on a totally discordant head looks like someone was playing with Barbies and glued on a farm animal's head or something.

9135  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vanguard beta now open on: January 06, 2007, 03:45:25 AM
Well, it's open to FilePlanet and 3D Gamers subscribers, apparently.  I'm not a subscriber to either of those sites, nor have I preordered the game, so I probably won't be checking it out unless it goes into actual open beta.

Has anyone gotten a chance to try this upcoming MMORPG out yet?
9136  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: GTA4: why no PC love? on: January 06, 2007, 03:09:05 AM
Yeah, it was announced quite a while ago that ShadowRun will be their first game to support the cross-platform Live Anywhere multiplayer.  I still don't personally think that you can have an FPS played with a controller be directly competitive with mouse and keyboard, but they consistently say it won't be a problem.  We will see once the game launches.
9137  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FlatOut 2 demo on: January 06, 2007, 03:05:09 AM
I can't say I've had that problem, Eduardo, but when you start up the game try to select something other than 60 Hz as your refresh rate.  I usually go with 75 Hz if it is supported for the resolution I am playing the game in.
9138  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Please recommend a good freeware MP3 ripper/encoder on: January 06, 2007, 03:02:22 AM
The Windows Media Player doesn't just rip to WMA, it will rip your discs to standard WMA, WMA Pro, adaptive WMA, lossless WMA, MP3 or WAV with several bitrates available for the non-lossless formats.
9139  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Crackdown to include access to Halo 3 multiplayer beta on: January 06, 2007, 02:34:19 AM
Considering you can make preorders up until the week before the game is released I doubt the beta is only on the preorder discs.  They may put it on the first chunk of copies or something, but to know exactly how many preorders they needed to fill before the manufacturing phase is just not realistic.  EB clerks are not exactly a great fount of accurate information when it comes to...most anything.  (no offense, Misguided)
9140  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Aiming tips for console shooters on: January 06, 2007, 02:25:42 AM
I would also just make sure that you don't play better with the y-axis inverted (or normal if it is inverted).  I've had some friends for which that seemingly simple change made things work a lot better for them.

Also worth mentioning, in the 360 dashbard you can actually set your profile preferences for three different kinds of games (General, Action, Racing) so it defaults to your preferred control and view method when you start up one of those games.
9141  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox 360 version 2 on: January 05, 2007, 03:32:39 PM
I'm not sure how "soon" we'll see this.  Didn't they alreaedy say that the 65nm core has been pushed back a while?
9142  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: GTA4: why no PC love? on: January 05, 2007, 05:32:20 AM
There is also the fact that just because PC games aren't huge money makers for retail companies like EB/GameStop (who have their large profit margins made by used console games) doesn't mean that the game companies aren't making money.  It is true that their profits may not be as large as a huge console release, but they also don't have to pay licensing fees to any console makers.  With the rising costs and time of development many games are released cross-platform (including on the PC) to ease some of that expense.

It comes down to the fact that if it wasn't profitable they wouldn't be made, and there are plenty of PC games released and in the pipeline.

I don't want to cause waves, but what is wrong with just using Windows Media Player?  What features are you looking for that aren't available there?  It's all I really use, but I have pretty archaic needs.

I did a quick search and saw there is a free version of 3DSMax, although it is 30 day limited.  I also see that on the Autodesk site they offer free versions of software to students if you sign into their student page thingy, but didn't check out other details.  They also used to have the free gMax modeling and animation tool, but it hasn't been updated or officially supported for a year or more.

Well, if Calvin really wants Guitar Hero I'd be willing to take the sytem off your hands for a reasonable price.  I'll pay $40 and Calvin can pay $100 for GH.  That sounds fair, right Cal?  icon_wink

Seriously, though, I'm willing to work out a deal that benefits all parties.
9149  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Iraqis Say They Were Better Off Under Hussein on: January 05, 2007, 03:55:43 AM
Well, it sounds like they will be sending in about 15,000 more troops so things are obviously going to improve very soon!  Or something.  The problems are deep seated cultural and religious issues and it isn't going to be fixed by "securing" one city, if they can even accomplish that (which I doubt).

9151  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Big EA games price cut starting tomorrow on: January 05, 2007, 02:14:36 AM
Yeah, that might be enough for me to finally pick up Fight Night.  Especially since I'm about due to start a new game after squeezing Saints Row for all it's worth.  With any luck the used price will drop to $20 since it's currently way below the standard price of $5 less than new.

9154  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: 40% of all rebates not fullfilled, 10%+ of all gift cards never get redeemed. on: January 04, 2007, 04:31:21 AM
I don't have a problem with stores not giving cash back for what is left of a gift card.  The card was money designated to be spent at that store, so you spend it there.  That's why the store has gift cards.  After all, if the person giving the card intended for you to buy a candy bar and get the rest back as cash they could have just given you cash, a check or a preloaded cash card.

And who is to be the one to determine at what level they give you cash back?  Less than $1?  If that, why not less than $5, or $10.  Policies are put in place so that they can be enforced and standard wage workers don't have to put up with assholes arguing about them.  It's people using and abusing systems that causes policies to become more and more strict over time.

My browser still loads as fast as it always has, it has nothing to do with me not noticing technical glitches.  I've been at work and not sitting around all day asking for something to be banned because there was a temporary glitch.

As for reading the PS3 threads...that's a joke.  It's all re-treads of the same goddamn arguments with Hetz baiting and the other dorks biting and then going around and around over who was in the wrong.
9156  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: New Indy on: January 04, 2007, 03:24:58 AM
I haven't read that comic series, but I will say that there is a difference between a real person in a movie and a comic which can make anybody, despite their age or whatever, appear agile, virile and strong.  Seeing Harrison Ford's wrinkley face grimace as he pretends to throw a punch that wouldn't hurt a squirrel just doesn't work as well.  OK, so he might not be all that bad yet, but even seeing the previews for Firewall was enough to convince me he is getting too old for this.
9157  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Re: Can we ban gamer tags? on: January 04, 2007, 03:13:46 AM
I've never had the problem nor seen anyone else complain about it.  Not sure why you would assume it is a problem for everyone else.   It may have just been a temporary problem with the server that hosts the tags.  For the record I use IE7.

9159  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FlatOut 2 demo on: January 04, 2007, 03:07:29 AM
I've never had any problem loading the gamertag avatars nor heard of anybody else having that problem, and they have been used on the site by various people for a few months now.

I pretty much gave up on the ragdoll stunts since I sucked so bad at them.  Something about the timing and controls just never really clicked for me and I saw no point in forcing myself to do something I didn't enjoy when I loved the rest of the game.
9160  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Post your backlog!!! on: January 04, 2007, 02:25:41 AM
I only consider games to be "backlog" if I haven't played them at all or not to my idea of completion (not necessarily to 100%, just until I have gotten my fun out of it).  With that in mind, almost all I have are some PS2 titles I bought on the cheap but don't have a PS2 to play them on:

Lego Star Wars 2 (played about 1/4 of it so far)
    Ratchet & Clank 1,2,3
    Sly Cooper
    God of War
