9121  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Got my DS Lite on: May 05, 2007, 05:39:03 AM
The original wide-style GBAs had absolutely horrible screen brightness since they had no backlight or anything.  The GBA SPs fixed that but I'm not sure it's better than the original DS, although I don't have them to compare.

There are a bunch of new screenshots and a teaser trailer for the game up over at TeamXBox.  I think the game is looking quite nice and it's going to be a must buy for me come June.

Here are a few choice shots (click for larger version):

9123  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA]double dragon next wednesday on: May 05, 2007, 04:35:28 AM
I'd say that the barrels in the unenhanced version look much better than the generic gradient-filled ones of the "enhanced" stuff.  The rest looks barely changed at all, really.  Boooo-urns.
9124  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii Rumour]the first star wars game for the system? on: May 05, 2007, 04:32:44 AM
I would be that if it does hit the Wii the lightsaber combat will just be wiggling the wii-mote to swing like in Zelda.  The game isn't designed and set up for any sort of one to one saber swinging.

Another port of a game I played a year ago.  Hooray for innovation!
9125  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Spiderman III- This Friday! on: May 05, 2007, 04:19:20 AM
So it sounds like everything I was afraid of is basically true.  Poor story, too many villians, lots of questionable CG and of course some weak acting the same actors you either like or really don't.

Why couldn't they just make a story mainly about Venom?  Sure, start out with a Bond-esque entrance of action against Sandman or something, but let the main movie be about a single villian and really develop it well.

9129  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Thinking of selling my Wii on: May 05, 2007, 03:12:54 AM
If mine wasn't a gift I would have sold it a couple weeks after I got it.  Part of the problem is that most of my gaming is solo gaming and the other is that the wii-mote controls are so gimmicky and inconsistently implemented that I never feel safe getting a game for the system.  And of course there just aren't many games on the horizon that interest me.

I will keep it around for those rare new games and for fun when visiting family and friends, but that's about it.
9130  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA]double dragon next wednesday on: May 04, 2007, 07:47:58 PM
It would be nice if it came with enhanced graphics, but I see no mention of that or Live multiplayer.

I'm away from home this week, but for those of you who have been playing this version of Catan, is it worthwhile for the singleplayer only?  I've never played the boardgame but mostly just because it's hard to get people together to play those sorts of games and I would like to check it out.

Word is that the new White Stripes album is great.  Anybody heard it?

That one won't be out until the middle of June, so I haven't heard it yet but I will certainly buy it.  Jack is also working on a new Raconteurs album due out early next year I think.

That's the first I've heard of a new Raconteurs album (YAY!).  Where'd you hear it from?

I think I read it in the most recent Rolling Stone.  I don't remember exactly what it said but they are going for a bit of a different vibe (country-ish?) with the next album I guess.
9136  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/pc] Shadowrun Achievements.... on: May 03, 2007, 12:17:26 AM
The IGN write-up of the comparison between the PC and 360 version made it sound like the PC version probably won't be the choice to play.  When you're aiming with a mouse you want fast and accurate aiming, not some widespread handicap BS.

- shaggy

While it's not an actual race, if you check out the "GDC 2007: Forza 2 Demo" over at IGN you can see that guy do a test drive for his modified car.  If you want to skip all the modifying and painting and crap the test drive starts at about 8:30 (other than a couple seconds at the beginning of the video).  He also slams into walls to show some of the damage that you can do to the car, although he really seems to suck at it and can't even get the bumper off.
9144  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Car porn (Forza 2) on: April 28, 2007, 07:00:35 AM
Well, the Forza guys have released this week's Pitpass Report a bit early.  The first part talks about running tournaments in the game, which sounds well implemented.  They also have a new HD video up of a new race showcasing an American muscle car ('69 Camaro SS) running against a more nimble Japanese racer ('95 Toyota MR2), which is something I've been curious to see.

9146  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Need help for system for in-laws on: April 28, 2007, 03:23:30 AM
That certainly looks like a good system that should do them well for a number of years.

Honestly I don't think that small of a CPU ugrade would be noticeable at all, but I'm of the opinion that if it is a reasonable price to get a faster one, and $15 is pretty negligible, go for it.  Saving the money would be fine, too.  Either way it won't be a make or break decision.

Clicking on the Product Details (below either of the green "Continue & Select Services" buttons) and then clicking on the Technical Specs tab it shows these:
Expansion Slots:
PCI: 2 Slots
PCIe x1: 1 Slot
PCIe x16 (Graphics): 1 Slots

So it should be good to go for future video card upgrades.  At least until manufacturers decide they need a newer and better interface to get the masses to upgrade once again.  slywink  EDIT: I did see it is only a 305 Watt power supply, so if you do end up putting in a much more powerful video card you may also need to replace that.  Just something to remember for the future.

The only other thing is that they are probably going to want some sort of speakers, even if they are just the cheapest you can get.

As long as you don't want/need top of the line gaming gear, which they don't, you should be able to get something decent for pretty cheap.  With a $1000 budget you really have a ton of choices since basic PC prices have come down so much.

Obviously the more RAM the better, and I would say 1Gig would be bare minimum (especially since casual users often have many background programs/processes running and do not do anything to help performance).

If possible, I would try to find something other than Intel on-board graphics, but that may be the only choice for lower-end PCs so consider one with an expansion slot for a few years down the line.  Also consider that an on-board graphics chipset is going to share the system RAM for the video cache and will leave less RAM available for other programs and may slow the system down a bit in general, so more RAM would help with that.

My recent obsession has been the 4k Challenge, which is kind of nice because it gives you the chance to lay down your design right away and see how well it will work.  Plus it's just good fun to send multiple groups to the slaughter right away.

Any manufacturer, software developer, etc... has to pay MS in some way to put out something on the windows OS.  Hardware makers have weird licensing and driving signing fees, along with OEM fees.  It's all fees, and more fees.  Sales of the actual OS matter only to make sure they keep the market primarily windows based so they can keep charging those fees.  All those fees add up.

Incorrect.  Unlike on a console, Windows development does not require any sort of fees be paid to Microsoft to publish a game or any other sort of software on the platform.  That is one of the big reasons PC's have been the haven of indie developers.  I could create and distribute my own Windows program using open source tools and not have to pay fees to anybody.

It didn't take me long to hit the 10 mill limit on the demo.  It was actually disappointingly quick considering I was just jamming the ball around and not really aiming or anything.

I tried out the demo of Pinball FX (only get the Speed Machine table) and I thought it was pretty good but to me it seemed as if the ball was playing just a little bit too fast or something.  Nobody else mentioned that, am I the only one who thought this?  I also like the old school spring loaded ball launchers, not the "hit a button and blast at full speed" kind.

Did they get any ninja moves to work?  I don't get the channel and I'd love to know what ninja feats I can try at home.

I'll spoiler tag for those that want to watch later in the week.

Spoiler for Hiden:
It was a bit disappointing for those of us looking for sweet ninja action.  As tested they didn't really get any of their moves to work but they used pretty narrow ideas for their tests.

For instance, with the catching a sword myth they went with bare hands trying to catch a sword coming straight down over their head by clapping their hands together, whereas the ninjitsu master had wraps on his hands that had plates in the palm so he could stop the blade more flat palmed.

As Ralph mentioned, the bow and arrow thing was at a very close range which was obviously done so they could have a predictable arrow path for the mechanical arm to grab, but it's not very realistic to demonstrate the reaction time a ninja would have at much longer distances.

Their walking on water tricks were pretty weak because not only were they only doing it on pool water (not salt water or rice-paddy mud, etc) but they had uncoordinated Adam basically just jumping in and flailing as he fell over.  A ninja would likely be much lighter than him, and far more coordinated and much better balance.  I've seen the ninjitsu masters competing against some other martial arts walking up balance poles and the ninja's balance put the others to shame.  And Adam is no martial artist.  I would doubt he could even get up by skiiing behind a boat.  slywink

And finally, a lot of the ninja mystique was the tricks they used for misdirection and misinformation, which Mythbusters did mention but of course didn't (and couldn't) take into account.
