9081  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Suggessions on a new PC build on: August 23, 2008, 08:19:28 PM
Yes, another one of these threads.  Sorry.

I think it's time to finally upgrade my computer and have been looking around a bit.  I've read some parts reviews and such, but I'm not as up on all the hardware as I used to be.  I think this is a pretty decent system for $1400 custom built from CyberPower, and not much more than it would cost me to build it myself.  I'm looking for this to last me a while and be upgradable for a bit as well, but can't really afford to go more expensive right now (or else I would have gotten more RAM out of the gate).

Any feedback/suggestions for me?

Oh, and quick-time events?  WTF?  I wish those things would die.

i was surprised to come across that as well...would much rather just see a cutscene to end the battle than do that synchronized button-press stuff out of nowhere.  hopefully, the game isn't too full of those sequences...

The bad QTEs are one of the big problems OXM had with the game.  Apparently they show up for killing every boss and mini-boss, so it's a bit anticlimactic and you never quite feel like you beat them with your own skills.

Your other point of one-and-done is another gripe they had.  With no multiplayer and no branching story/powers it is a pretty straight-forward game.

One that I am watching right now would be Lake Placid.  It's such a terrible B movie, but I like it for some reason and always seem to watch it when it's on TV.

In case anyone cares this one got a 7.5 in the most recent OXM.  They aren't usually the harshest critics, so I would say if you're on the fence you may want to proceed cautiosly.

So...it looks like the screen on the new PSP will have double the refresh rate of the old ones (in addition to higher contrast and color values).  I know at least one person around here that has been waiting for that.
9089  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] Alone in the Dark vastly improved on: August 22, 2008, 05:13:23 AM
I'd be willing to give this one a chance if they actually fix the problems it had.  Probably not until after the coming fall/winter onslaught of new games, but eventually when it's cheap.

Love it.  Tyranids are far from my favorite race but they look to be quite interesting.  I think it’s the scale of the units that I like the most, makes them far more imposing then the other races.

How is their scale any different than any other race?  There were lots of regular soldier-sized units running around and that large one is no different than a Dreadnought as far as I can tell.

Disappointing to hear. I've been watching via Netflix and thought Season 3 took a serious turn to suck after a stellar and very good Season 1 and 2. Was hoping Season 4 would help 'em find their way back to good.  icon_cry

Same here.  I guess no reason to put Season 4 in the queue when it comes time.

I agree that it's ugly, but it doesn't look like Sharpie.  I saw what looked like trailing off brush strokes in some of the close-ups, so I'd have guessed it was painted.
9094  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: If you really like a game, HOW do you play it? on: August 20, 2008, 01:43:09 AM
It depends on the game, but if I really like it I will tend to try and find/do everything there is.  Sometimes that becomes a bit overwhelming which causes me to run out of steam and move on to something else, so I would probably be better off just doing the main stuff and finishing the game.

and people have already found exploits.  I guess some feel the need to start off with lots of gold.

I think it would be a great move if this was an intentional "bug" that was put in the game, and if you had used it more than a handful of times it would add more and more evil to the character that you tie the gold to.  That way it reflects your actual actions when you don't know that it will directly affect your in-game character, unlike the concious decision of killing a virtual kitten or something.
9097  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: LEGO Batman: 360 or Wii? on: August 19, 2008, 10:22:46 PM

Canadian Broadcasting Corp.  We used to get that in northern North Dakota where I grew up, but I'm guessing not many other places get it down here.  smile
9103  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Gears of War 2 : Family Edition on: August 17, 2008, 09:37:13 PM
Well then how about the violence of a PG-13 rated movie where people are shot but no blood/gore shown, and an R-rated movie with bloody bullet impacts and swearing?

Since I just saw it on TV, the thing that comes to mind is Alien vs Predator compared to AvP:Requiem.  The first is rated PG-13 and the second is R for gore, violence and language.

Hell, if you think about it, this is similar to any R-rated movie that is edited for TV.  It still may be a war movie (or whatever), it just doesn't have the language and blood of the original.

I was just at my local Target and saw the following:

Kane & Lynch (PS3 and 360) - $20
Bioshock (360) - $20
MX vs ATV Untamed (360) - $25
Bully (Wii) - $20
some sports games (didn't pay much attention)
some DS games (ditto)

This isn't based on the movies, though, it's all from the comic license.  I'm guessing going too similar to the Dark Knight's Joker would be a bit no-no.
9110  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NSFW Round Robin on: August 16, 2008, 06:58:55 AM

Now I know why I don't go to real casinos...I can't win shit.  I did have fun with Fortune's Tower, but ven if I bank 4 or 5 sets I seem to lose all of that and more in the next hand.

Not a fan of the dice game and the payouts are mostly crap.  I guess I still have one more game type to try out before I give up on winning money.  I'm very glad I got this/these as a free perk for preordering and didn't pay for them.

This is one of those games that I wish I did like the gameplay, but the whole auto-sliding into each enemy seemed silly to me and I felt like I actually had little control over who I was hitting and how.   But man, I like the whole techno fantasy thingie.

Yeah, the sliding thing didn't really bother me at all, for some reason.  I just read the article and my only concern is poor targeting at range, though, I guess I actually did shoot some guns in the demo and didn't feel it was horrible or anything.

I really enjoyed the sliding mechanic when i became acclimated to it. It started to have a strange zen-like quality to it once you had a large numbers of enemies a moderate distance from your character. With each flick of the right analog stick I was gliding around the screen effortlessly and destroying enemies at an amazing speed. The effect couldn't be recreated easily if I had to control the camera, and if my character was just running around.

Yeah, and then it got to the point where I realized I could just wiggle the stick without even looking at the screen and destroy 20 enemies.  That kind of lost me.

It's been a while since I've played it, but I think the angle of your fists determines where you punch.  Tilt 'em forward to body punch.  Tilt 'em to the same side to dodge.  Smack people.  Don't get smacked.  smile

So, I played this during lunch here at work and it seems pretty damn cool so far.  I think it all boils down to the fact that if you like the characters from homestarrunner.com you will have fun.  It almost seems like one long, interactive episode from the website.

The only downside so far is that it doesn't seem like there are quite as many random things to click on as I would expect.  I love clicking on random things in Sam & Max and hearing what goofy thing they will say or do, and it just doesn't seem to be as much of an element here.

Not sure how long the episode will end up being, but I'd guess it's something you could finish in one sitting if you had a few hours.
