9081  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Thinking about learning Python on: May 15, 2008, 02:52:03 AM
I would guess that the majority of Civ4 was written in C++ with Python used for scripting and such.  Actually I just looked on Wikipedia and is says that "Major parts of the interface, map generation, and scripted events are written entirely in Python and can be customized."  We use Lua for similar functions.

I'm sure there are people who write games in Python, but I would be surprised to see any commercial products that do (perhaps excepting some puzzle games or something).

Mabye I should just shut my mouth, though, since I really don't have worthwhile experience with Python.
9082  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii Fit - I am so weak on: May 15, 2008, 01:30:55 AM
I've read all of the reviews and I'm still getting it.  There are some aspects that it sounds like it could have done better (specifically linking different activities into an actual workout), but that's not the only reason I'm looking forward to it.  I think the combination of the guided exercises (the yoga stuff seems cool), the weight tracking, the minigames and the potential for future games is what excites me.

Personally my big hope for this thing is that they release a sweet snowboarding game that takes advantage of it.  They already have We Ski that uses is and Skate It is supposed to also, so I'm hopeful.

Plus, my copy was already paid for as a Christmas gift so I'm getting it either way.  slywink

I just meant that you can not use the mouse for attacks, aiming, etc as I am used to...from every other game on the planet.  I don't have a 360 adapter here at work to try that out, or I probably would have.
9084  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Thinking about learning Python on: May 15, 2008, 01:16:44 AM
We use it for generating some real code here at work.  slywink  It just does the grunt work of generating our basic message header and cpp files from an xml that it parses.

I've messed with our python scripts a bit and as someone who has used C/C++ extensively it seems a bit goofy and not as powerful.  Those that have used it a lot seem to think that it is pretty swell.  I'm sure given enough time and experience I could get used to it.

What sort of stuff were you looking to use it for?

Yeah, it still amazes me when I am getting tutorials for things that I have been doing for many hours.  I guess they expected people to follow the storyline instead of messing about so much or something.

Well I've already paid for early access and it's credited on my account, I just haven't gotten an email about it and don't see anything on my Funcom account page.

I avoided using that link because I'm wary of non-official sources.

I did notice that my account Status says "Open: Log in and play the game" on my account page, so maybe they just extend my closed beta straight into retail.  I dont' know...
9087  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Age of Conan (It's Golden!) on: May 14, 2008, 10:39:10 PM
Has anybody gotten an official email for the download of the early-start client?  I thought today was the day that they said downloads would begin?

I'm assuming that my closed beta client won't be able to work with retail updates and servers.
9088  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Wii] Boom Blox Impressions on: May 14, 2008, 06:03:53 AM
I played for another 3+ hours tonight and had a great time (other than a sore wrist).  Like you say, it's easy to waste 20 minutes just retrying a level to try and get the gold.

I finished the sheep and gorilla parts of Adventure and then tried out some of the regular Explore stuff.  I think the Explore stuff might be a more gradual build-up with easier levels.  The adventure mode can be frustrating at times, but I only gave up with a silver on one level (one of the gorilla ones).

I really like the fact that there are several different play modes and tools/toys to use.

If any of you guys start building your own levels, we will have to share friend codes and trade!  (could you imagine how awesome it would be if there were just a repository you could download from?)

I finally got my copy and tried it out a little bit today.  So far I think I can see this one being tons of fun and very addictive.  It has simple mechanics but uses them in complex, fun ways.  Of course now I have to go home and start my own profile from scratch, but I got a couple other guys at work interested in it.

Hooray, a reason to hook my Wii back up!!

It took me several jumps to finally be able to grab the vine after that room.  It was kind of retarded.  I didn't try to blow up that other door, but I do remember a tip popping up about it.

I have to say that I still hate the camera in these games, and I can't believe the controls are keyboard only.  Still fun, though.

Cool, I'm interested in hearing how it turned out.  I'm sure it won't be stellar, but if it's something fun I can play with my niece and nephew I might pick it up.
9095  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Banjo Kazooie 3 shots, Viva Pinata 2 coming on: May 13, 2008, 08:23:32 PM
I'm just curious what exactly this Banjo Kazooie is going to be in regards to gameplay.  It sounds like there is a much bigger component of vehicle building/customization and I guess the inherant racing/battles that come with those.  I really want a good platformer on the 360, not some sort of fancy Donkey Kong Racing (or Banjo Kartzooie, if you must).

I'll certainly give the new Viva Pinata a chance.  Had there been some slightly better controls and adjustable game time in the last one I would have jumped on it.  I spent hours just with the demo alone.

9102  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Any interest in GRID? on: May 12, 2008, 02:52:04 PM
I agree with disarm that GRID seems to have a bit more forgiving race style than DiRT's rally races (which I love), and when I played there was just something that felt really good about tapping the brakes into a corner, diving low and passing three cars as I gave it some gas.

Having said that, I also can't wait for Baja this summer!  Off-road is definitley my preferred racing environment.

9106  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Flathead Screws are for Morons on: May 11, 2008, 05:22:25 PM

Quote from: Ironrod on May 11, 2008, 05:15:27 PM

Phillips screw heads were designed to slip more easily than a straight screwdriver. Early machines often overtightened straight-head screws. Ah, here we go -- from Wiki:

"The Phillips screw drive has slightly rounded corners in the tool recess, and was designed so the driver will slip out, or cam out, under high torque to prevent over-tightening. The Phillips Screw Company was founded in Oregon in 1933 by Henry F. Phillips, who bought the design from J. P. Thompson. Phillips was unable to manufacture the design, so he passed the patent to the American Screw Company, who was the first to manufacture it."

And yet, in the same breath, Wiki also says:

"Slot head has a single slot, and is driven by a flat-bladed screwdriver. The slotted screw is common in woodworking applications, but is not often seen in applications where a power driver would be used, due to the tendency of a power driver to slip out of the head and potentially damage the surrounding material."

So which one is it, Wiki? Which screw slips more easily?

They both slip, just in different ways.  The phillips head slips under high-torque situations but doesn't displace the screwdriver to the side, and with a slot head the screwdriver often slips out the side, potentially damaging the material.  Easy enough.

The "Forever Stamps" -of which I have a few books - have no price and are supposed to be valid regardless of price increases so I've no immediate concern about postal increases.

Although I enjoy the Internet as much or more as anyone else, I avoid online bill paying simply because I don't like allowing too much automatic withdrawals to anyone. Yeah, I know, many people are patting themselves on the back about not using snail mail, yawnnn, congratulating themselves on their cleverness about not having to write a check, but I prefer being actively aware of where, when, why, etc. my money is going. Otherwise, I'd be just puzzled about my expenses at the end of the year.

You can still do online bill pay without it being automatic, and in fact that is what I do.  I simply get an email reminder when my bill is ready (Comcast. T-Mobile, credit cards, power) and then go to the appropriate website and pay it from my checking account.  But you can keep patting yourself on the back if you feel like.

Have you seen how ugly those locust are? im sure a couple of bullets arnt going to faze them, maybe having to shoot them 50+ times before they die is a cheap way of making the game last longer?

I would say it's because of a mix of design and technical reasons.  It's a way to have each firefight last longer, make the player use the cover system to exchange fire and to allow for less enemies to be present at any time allowing for increased quality in each character.

My only gripe is with the colors. Like in GoW, GoW2 appears to be using 3-4 colors total for everything.

GoW is certainly on the far end of the monocrhomatic scale, but a lot of games have been going more towards that "realistic" look (Skate, Burnout, GTA4) and it bugs me.  I spents lots of money on this console and HDTV, I want to see some fucking colors, damnit!  Real life is not that washed out.

The big thing with me not liking WW2 shooters is the crappy iron sights.  I just can't use that to aim and much prefer a scope, dot, reticule or something along those lines.

Of course I think the general quality will likely be a bit lower in the Treyarch developed CoD5 anyway, so that doesn't help.

You have always wanted one but you didn't even know what they were? Just the idea of a frozen product with the word steak in it's name got you excited?

I thought they were a pre made philly cheese steak mini sandwich that you just needed to microwave or toast..seems I was mistaken. Maybe Ill stick to the Stouffers panini bread frozen microwave sandwiches instead.

If you find the Healthy Choice panini sandwiches on sale (usually for about $2 around here) they are the tastiest in my opinion.  Cheese steak, smoked chicken, chicken basil...yumm.
