I think we should keep 8 planets and no more.  If we include stuff like Pluto, then whatever classification system we use will make 100's or 1000's or other astronomical bodies in our solar system into planets.  That's just ridiculous.  Pluto is extremely small and has a wacky orbit.  It shouldn't be a planet.  One of the physics professors here on campus who is in charge of the observatory could make some real compelling arguments as to why Pluto (and others) shouldn't be planets.

I think you are arguing against nothing considering they aren't classified as planets anymore.  They have the new classification of dwarf planet

Their are no games that have a requirement of PCI/AGP or PCI Express. Their are some fairly high spec cards for the AGP. The main reason to go for PCI-E is it is the current standard so most cards are produced for it.

I understood - but  could be wrong that AGP is still a fast enough standard to handle the current crop of cards.

Tals

I am not quite sure about BF2, but when I bought BF:Vietnam It did not support PCI cards. straight up AGP. There were a few games after that that followed with the same requirements.
This is how I ended up with my new rig.
For some reason my old one did not have a AGP slot (Referb).
So I went out looking for a comp with the  AGP slot and PCI if needed and by some Faith ended up with an express slot and won the xpress card 2 days after.

Not to nitpick, but Battlefield: Vietnam didn't "not support PCI Cards.  straight up AGP".  It required a level of graphics card that was beyond what was available for PCI slots, specifically: 3D accelerated GeForce3 64 MB or equivalent DirectX9 compatible videocard.  Perhaps if there had been a PCI card that met those specifications it could run the game, but graphics card companies did not make them because of the limited bandwidth and the proliferation of AGP slots, similar to how there is a limited selection of higher-end AGP cards being made right now.  Even the original GeForce 256 was AGP (and even back to the Riva TNT's in 1998).

You guys are getting bad pings, whats up with that?  I used to get shit pings with Comcrap, then I switched to Wide Open West, and average 17ms-22ms almost anywhere.  I pay only $29 a month for 6MB Down, 500K up, but WOW routinely provides me with between 6500-6800 down, and 550-650 upstream.  FANTASTIC company.

Yeah, my pings aren't testing extremely well from that site, but I have to say that overall my results there have been all across the board.  I have gotten download results as high as 11000kbps and as low as ~6000 and ping times from 20-60 on the same server.  While I realize that net congestion fluctuates form minute to minute I think they need to do more thorough testing and averaging to get more accurate values.

I think Rolling Stone votes with tradition rather than purpose.  Seriously?  Bob Dylan is #1?  I can't find 10 people that listen to Bob Dylan. (or did in the past) He sounds like he's mildly retarded and sings through his nose.

If we are going by market impact and sales, the baseball "Hey" song would be up there, as would the Macarena.  Both songs suck, but people sure bought the hell out of them.

I suspect that has more to do with the title of the song.

And the fact that Bob Dylan is widely regarded as one of the greatest song writers around.  He may not be on the radio these days but he has made huge contributions to music.  Having said that, my Dad played his records all the time when I was a kid and I don't mind his music, but it isn't something that I listen to often (although I have friends that do).

It looks better than the tools I used used to use at DSLreports, but I think they are a bit more robust over there and allow you to compare to lots of other people's results with the same or different broadband provider.  And obviously it's not just DSL anymore, it's now BroadbandReports.

I think what he was asking is that outside of the special mode, do you still use the other buttons for ollies, grabs, spins, flips-tricks, etc. or is it solely double-sticks for everything?

If you still use those other buttons, how smooth does it feel to switch control to the analog sticks when changing into Nail the Trick mode?  It seems as if this would be a bit incongruous and possibly confusing as well as a challenge for those of us who were already spazzing out trying to hit buttons quickly enough.

I'll put in recommendations for The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon and pretty much anything by Haruki Murakami.  Black Swan Green by David Mitchell was excellent.  Richard Russo writes some great drama mixed with tragic comedy and I think that Straight Man may be my favorite of his.  I also just read Replay by Ken Grimwood and it was very interesting.

Most of the time, I'd agree with you.  However, I saw this the other night and it looks absolutely brilliant.

Ferrell was also quite good in the movie Winter Passing.  Not exactly his usual self, and it was refreshing.

I would also hold back Maggie Ghyllenhall, mostly because I think she's cute.

Redford hasn't done much of note lately, but he was in some absolute classics (as mentioned above) and should probably get a pass from those.  Of course, it's not like he's Newman or anything.

I've got this one preordered, so I'm hoping it turns out to be a good game. The early reviews are varying wildly, with a 40 point difference in some cases. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this title turns out to be like Enhanted Arms- a great title that was misrepresented in the scoring.

I just read my free copy of EGM (thank you Internets!) and saw that this one got pretty horrible reviews.  The scores were 4.5, 5, and 4 and the text made it seem like the game had some pretty serious control and camera issues.

From my experience most game stores get the new games in by Tuesdays.  It would be my guess that for the TV commercial that reaches a broad audience they just wanted to play it safe and date it as the 14th so that it is availabe in the widest array of stores possible.

I really wish games had advanced to the point where they were avaiable everywhere on a specific date like movies and music.

I agree that Doom should absolutely be high on the list if not number one.  As Big Jake said it brought gaming to a huge audience and had a level of immersion that surpassed everything before and after for years.  It also introduced elements that would mold the industry such as it's multiplayer options and open architecture that allowed player-made maps and mods.

The oddest bit to me is that you read it from bottom to top.

Well, it's similar to how they did the PS1, except they quickly changed to the relatively square jewel case design where it made more sense.  Doing it vertically on a vertical package just seems like a goofy idea to me, all the more so because of established standards for the last 6 years or so.

And it's great that now that there has become a pretty understood standard of putting the format on the top of the packaging (even for new PC titles) they have decided to fuck that up and go along the side again.  Way to be original, Sony!

My problem with ordering online is that I live in an apartment complex so any packages from UPS/Fed Ex are delivered to the front office, but my front office is a bunch of lazy tards and they are only open from 9 to 5 on weekdays (the hours I am working) so I have to wait until Saturday to pick up packages and hope to hell that they didn't decide to close the office for no goddamn good reason.

The same goes for the Post Office for the most part since they close at 6 and I can rarely get there in time, except that with some Saturday deliveries my postal carrier will actually bring the box to my door.  He did that with my Xbox 360 when that came in the mail and I wanted to hug the silly bastard.  icon_biggrin

Lame or not that has been how MS has done it since the original Xbox. With the 360 at least you can get patches and demos without the subscription, so it has gotten better. I find it well worth the $4 a month... of course it doesn't take much to be worth $4/month. slywink The game does come with a code good for 48 hours of Live Gold.

i second that.  xbox live gold is an incredibly value.  each month, for less than the price of a pack of cigarettes, i get the convenience of demos, patches, arcade, MP, etc., all available whenever i want.  i'm a huge fan of the way microsoft implements and maintains it.

Not to totally derail the thread but you can get demos, patches and download and play arcade games with the free Xbox Live Silver service.  All the Gold service gets you is the ability to play multiplayer.

true, i forgot about that.  however, the MP is so darn good that i still feel it's worth it.  voice communication is so well done that i don't think i've ever NOT used it.

Voice communication is great if you're playing with friends, but for in general I have grown to hate it because I don't really care to hear random people talking shit, bragging, swearing and calling other people fags.  I play games to relax and have fun and I don't find rude, derisive, overly-competitive gaming fun.  I guess tha'ts why I've let my Live drop back to Silver and haven't missed it.  Cripes, I feel like an old fogey and I'm not even 30 yet!
