Visually I thought it looked pretty badass from all the screenshots they have released.  Sad to hear that it didn't turn out that good in the end.  They would have had to make it pretty spectacular to get noticed in the RTS world this year, I think.

Whichever adds games rentals will have my money.  Right now we use Netflix.  The Blockbuster plan sounds interesting, but I'm happy with Netflix now, and would rather not change.  If Blockbuster added game rentals as part of their package though, I'd switch that day.

I've never used it, but what about something like Gameznflix that does both games and movies from the same service?  Looking on their site it appears they also have books and audio-books as well as movies in Blu-Ray, HD-DVD and UMD formats.

It's from Weeds on Showtime.  I haven't seen it yet (have it in the Netflix queue) but it's about a suburban mom who sells weed throughout the neighborhood and such.  Supposed to be pretty funny and from that clip I think it looks quite entertaining.

If you have the last issue of OXM there is a coupon in there to get 15% off the game at Circuit City (about $9 on the regular, or $10.50 for the collector's).  They are also giving away a free Gears of War faceplate with a preorder, although some sites say that's only for preordering the collector's version.

CGW's Matt Peckham only gives NWN2 5 out of 10 stars in the Jan issue. Is his review pretty un standard for NWN2?
The review is utter crap.  Read it, you will see he is more focused on criticizing the D&D Ruleset then he is the actual game.

And the review is such utter crap, 1UP has actually pulled the review:

The 1UP Network review of Neverwinter Nights 2, authored by Matt Peckham, has been officially retracted from and will not appear in the January issue of Games For Windows: The Official Magazine.

Upon further review of the author's text, listening to the feedback from our community and others, and after internal discussion between the 1UP and GFW editors, we have determined that the text of the review did not live up to our editorial standards. We respect the opinions of Mr. Peckham and all of our writers, but we felt that this particular review of Neverwinter Nights 2 did a disservice to fans of the RPG genre.

We have commissioned a new review by a different author to be published next week on, and in the January issue of Games For Windows.

So they are actually putting reviews back in the magazine?  Hopefully they significantly changed or got rid of that mess of quotes system they have been doing.

I think some of you are taking this too far, it's not THAT horrible of a retail environment. Sure, they can pressure you with suggestive selling, but is it that difficult to interrupt them and say "Sorry, I'm not interested, please don't offer me anything else"? That would shut them up right there, and if they make some snide remark, ask to talk to that person's manager (even if it's the store manager).

Oh, and I have a tip for people who wish to make their complaints heard. There is actually an 800 number that you can call, I forget what the heck the number is though, and the number of calls is actually tallied in each district. If a district gets a lot of these calls, they go on some sort of list and the DM is given hell from the Regional Manager. I remember my DM telling me about that. So if you wan't to beat them, beat them at their own game by hurting their productivity.

Or just kick them in the jimmy and run like hell!  icon_biggrin

And I will undoubtedly continue wasting away the hours playing Battlefield 2142, trying to earn some new weapons for my two soldiers.

Too bad this version isn't available on Netflix.  I already had the original in my queue and would definitely replace it with this one since it seems to be the superior version.

That's really weird since they have director's cuts of many other movies.  You should put in a request for them to carry it.

Can you do that?  Man, I didn't even know they had that feature.  Huzzah!
10332  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Blockbuster Online - Total Access. on: November 03, 2006, 03:44:28 AM
The big feature of Netflix that I like is the Friends system, which allows me to check out my friends' queues, what they have watched, their ratings and written reviews, give each other personal recommendations and compare their tastes with my own.  That system and having my friends as a part of it is the single reason why I signed up for Netflix instead of Blockbuster.

Another problem I had is that Blockbuster's "one free in-store movie rental per month" thing would requrie me to actually print out a fucking coupon and I don't have a printer.  The least they could do is just send it in the mail (you know, like all the movies that are coming to me?) or better yet just credit it to my BB account so it is in their computer next time I go.

Cheap bastards. disgust Just put what you have into the game for, you know, the people paying $60.00 fucking dollars for your stuff. finger to EA.

for what it's worth, all of the 'cheat' content that EA is selling on Marketplace for Carbon can be unlocked inside the game if you're willing to play it enough...buying it separately on Marketplace just allows people who are too lazy to play the whole game to get some of the best upgrades/vehicles easily.  if you read the descriptions for the content online, they very clearly inform you that the 'cheats' can be earned by completing certain parts of the game.  while i don't like the direction EA seems to be headed, i can't completely hate them for this one.  everyone who buys the game gets the same content, but buying the stuff off Marketplace keeps you from actually having to earn it all.

Actually, if you read what they say in their descriptions you will see that they say "Many of the items in this bundle can be achieved without purchase by progressing through Career, Challenge Series and Reward Card." (emphasis mine)  So that is a bit misleading, making people think they are possibly missing out on some elements by not purchasing these things.

You will probably want to hook it up to your network and monitor to power it up at least once and download the updates that have been made available.  I personally just run CAT5 cable to my 360, but I live alone so there's nobody to tell me it's in the way or looks bad.  icon_smile

Huh, I guess I had never even noticed the battery meter before.  I just waited until the lights on my controller started doing the going-dead dance.

So far I do like some of the ways they have changed the arrangement of the menus, although it still seems goofy for some things like the XBox Live Marketplace tab to have a selection for "Games" and one for "Demos and Game Videos".  And having the Arcade downloads in two places doesn't seem quite right.  I think they could almost just get rid of that first XBox Live tab with the Marketplace selection since everything in that part is available elsewhere.  It all seems like poorly thought out interface design to me.

Now where's my dang backwards compatibility update?  You would think they'd be able to do those more often than every 6 months or whatever.
10344  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii Launch titles announced, VC titles included on: November 01, 2006, 02:48:51 AM
That is certainly a lot of games and I agree that hopefully they aren't blowing their load only to see the next set of games not come out for months afterwards.  Not that Nintendo would ever do something like that, right?  I mean...

I know Rapala is a brand of fishing gear, so if that turns your crank maybe you'd be into a fishing game.  Happy Feet is a CG animated movie about penguins that is coming out pretty soon.  Not sure how they will turn that into a game, but that hasn't stopped companies before.

The one thing that really interests me about the CCG is that if you're lucky you can get a turtle mount for the actual game.  I played WoW for a year and a half and from the beginning all I ever wanted was a turtle mount; now after I've finally given up the crack they make one avaiable through this method.  Bastards!  Maybe after Burning Crusade comes out...

10352  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Top 5 games of the past 3 years? on: October 28, 2006, 03:01:58 AM
For those of you who are playing the full version of BF2142, I've played the demo and have a question about the unlocks.  For what it's worth, I never played the full version of BF2 either, so I'm pretty clueless.

Basically, how many points does it take to unlock each next weapon?  All I can see in the demo is a bar that says X/10000, and when I'm only getting like 15 points per game it will take for freaking ever to hit that many points and I don't want to wait a year before I get goddamn grenades!  Also, I'm not sure if the demo is even correctly recording my points or if it is rarely updated or what, because I can play many rounds and not see an actual increase in that number.

I agree that 2X is the place to start if you have an XBox.  It has all the goodness of Pro Skater 1 and 2 (plus a few new levels) rolled into one.

After trying out that Project 8 demo I realized that I had no need for another of those games, as it was so reminiscent of what I had played the hell out of in the first few of the series.  I was really hoping that the "Nail the Trick" thing would be awesome, but it just didn't click for me.
10357  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Console Noise Levels on: October 24, 2006, 02:52:19 PM
Maybe you shouldn't put the console in your cabinet and close the doors, considering that will restrict airflow, raising the heat and likely causing the fans to spin at full RPMs as well as possible damage in the long run if it is running too hot.

Mine doesn't make much sound at all, and certainly much quieter than my computer.
10358  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 24 things you should know about the PS3... on: October 24, 2006, 02:28:10 AM
I think the whole "more than $60 games" thing mostly has to do with Japan, where they will likely be priced higher according to popularity similar to how that is done now with big titles.  I would assume this is one of the reasons they have been able to lower the price of the hardware there, also.
