for the 1000 base jump...there is a safe house up in the mountains called the eagles nest...........it took me a while but if you find the right place to jump, thats where you can get your 1000 base jump achievements....as soon as you jump(if in the right place)pull back on the analogue stick, otherwise you just go face first into the side of the mountain...i got to a plave falling where i continue to fall through a canyon/valley...and thats how i got the achievement...but it did take me a while to find the right spot

I unlocked The Eagle's Nest late last night and did try diving off it a couple times but couldn't get far enough away from the mountain without hitting the parachute for a couple seconds.  I will have to try again a few more times.

Kobra, I think with the more negative reviews it's a case of being annoyed by the shortcomings of the game or what it isn't rather than being entertained by what it is, a light-hearted action game in a wide-open world.  To each their own, but it's certainly been eating up my weekend.

10323  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Who do you trust? on: October 01, 2006, 04:03:15 PM
Other than getting my own hands on the game or demo I tend not to trust any one source too much.  If I am interested in a game I tend to do the shotgun approach and read as many reviews and impressions as I can to get a feel for what problems people are seeing and how I percieve myself dealing with those issues.

Magazines can be could for addressing overall systemic problems with a game and reading their text can be worthwhile, but you will rarely see them address the issue of bugginess because they are often running pre-release code due to the two month run-up to printing and they can't keep up with the release of patches even if they are running production code.

Forum users can be great for getting a real-world view from somebody who has shelled out the cash for a game, but they can also tend to be a bit more extreme in their views.  The great thing is that you can get a much broader view on the game, see back-and-forth discussions on interesting/problem areas and keep up with a game as it gets patched.

Online sites fall somewhere in-between those two, depending on the site.  I tend to read them en masse to contribute to the aggregate review in my head.

So I've been doing a lot of the Liberation side missions and I'm curious about something.  When you start these missions there are Bonus objectives to destroy along the way (crates of coca, weapons caches or police stations) marked by black dots on the minimap.  What is th actual bonus is for destroying those things?  Maybe I'm just not paying attention and it's giving me faction prestige as I destroy them but I haven't noticed any bonuses after completing the Liberation.

I've also had a few times where I was unable to destroy one of those bonus crates no matter what I throw at it and that is annoying since once you liberate the settlement you don't get the chance to reset it or try again.

metallicorphan, for the 1000m base jump did you go off one of the mountains for that or what?  So far I haven't really found one that is adequately high and has a steep enough drop so I can angle out before hitting the parachute.

Actually, I was just in Target this morning and noticed the price reductions, too.  D&D Online and the Sony Online pack (Everquest 1&2, Matrix Online, Planetside and one other) were both only $7.98.  Auto Assualt was $4.98.

Has anyone had this crash constantly?

I dont know whats going on, but the same Mission (Kill the Police Chief/Escape by Boat) has locked up the Xbox 4 times in a row, and when it finally did work, the mission to liberate the city of Los Victorlaes locked up my system when I captured the flag. I Really want to like the game, but I won't even bother if its going to keep acting like it was programmed by a 5 year old with downs.

ANy suggestions or is this a common problem?

no offense to your friend Kobra, but he is so contradictory that I have a hard time even believing what I am reading.

How can you hate the controller but think the machine is impressive? I need more information, is it just the games he's playing? What else is wrong, is not finding it easy to adjust to the new style, are the controllers unresponsive? You should get him to sign up on here and punch out a few more detailed impressions.

Good point, I am directing him here.  Apparently the games look great, but the controller is unresponsive, and difficult to use.  Thats what I gathered from him. Anyway, hopefully he will register and chime in.

Yeah, that's what I got from his impressions.  He thought it looked better than expected but had problems with the controls.

Honestly, it's those problems with the implementation of controls are what I have been fearing all along.  Hopefully it becomes useable and useful and not just a novelty for it's own sake.

10333  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Just Cause on: September 30, 2006, 03:58:15 PM
Yeah, the pickup trucks can be a bit crappy to drive too, which may be where I got the impression in the demo.  And when you start helping the rebels take over safe houses, some of the vehicles you unlock are quite fast but harder to control (like the import-tunerish one, whatever it's called).
10334  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just Cause on: September 30, 2006, 07:20:57 AM
I finally tracked down a copy of Just Cause for the 360 after work tonight and I've played it for a few hours.  So far I have to say that it doesn't disappoint at all, although it should be noted that I did enjoy the demo once I got used to it.

I have to say that the game is just gorgeous on a huge scale.  From swimming under water to stealing a chopper and witnessing the massive island vistas it is very beautiful.  Everything is super colorful, the draw distance is way far and I haven't noticed any real pop-in even when going from the ground straight up in a helicopter and back down.

Beyond doing a lot of exploring and checking everything out (you can go anywhere from the start it looks like) I have done a few of the main quests and helped the revolutionaries free some townships and did some side quests to gain respect with them and gained access to another safe house.

There are also a number of package collection side quests you can do at any time (similar to GTAIII, except there are a number of quests with 10 packages spread either near or wide) andI've completed a couple of these.  The nice thing is that they show up as dots on your minimap when you are near them, the annoying thing is that on my relatively tiny 20" screen it can be hard to spot them on the ground sometimes since the "glow" around them is small.

I really like the fact that you can use your PDA thingy to jump to a safe house or call down a vehicle via Heavy Drop any time you want.  It certainly helps when you've just trashed your vehicle and aren't near another one or don't want to steal one.  To start with you can only call in a dirt bike, but later you can call for cars, boats, etc.

Also, it may just be my imagination, but it seems as if the vehicles are a bit less touchy and don't slide around as much as in the demo.  The game is also much more forgiving than the GTA games when it comes to driving up high-grade terrain and if you can't get a car up it chances are you can run up it.  This is nearly necessary considering how hilly the game is, and it eliminates a lot of frustration and wasted time trying to find a path.

I do still have trouble figuring out which button to press to do a certain action since they become context sensitive and even though it pops up on the screen to "Hit 'Y' to Exit Vehicle" etc I can never seem to remember the right button.  Maybe with time I will become less of a spaz, but it just seems like they aren't quite intuitive enough.

Viva la revolucion!  icon_biggrin  Seriously, I can't be the only one that's enjoying this game, right?

Surprisingly, Microsoft has announced that Cryptic Studios (makers of City of Heroes/Villians) will be developing the MMO based on the Marvel Comics universe for cross-platform play on PC and 360.  Marvel had previously sued NCSoft and Cryptic because the hero recreation utility supposedly infringed on Marvel's copyrights, but they lost in court.  Not much information available on the game, but it will apparently take place in the modern Marvel universe and use an updated version of Cryptic's previous game technology.

I saw the announcement at TeamXBox and IGN

It's looking like they are really packing this one to the brim with all the goods.  Every character from all of the MK's is playable (62, I think) as well as a create-your-own-fighter option, Motor Kombat and the Konquest adventure mode.  Plus the new elements to the fighting system like the mid-air combat and the create-a-fatality combo thing.

If you or your kids are into platformer/action games the PS2 is home to some classic series in that genre: Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, and Sly Cooper.  Each takes that gameplay in it's own direction.

I've been looking around and I see alot of people saying Q1 2007 for Crackdown.

I would be a little disappointed if this is the case, but I would be much more disappointed if it got released during the holiday rush without being polished and no hype just to get it out the door.  Hopefully they will give official word on it soon.

Since Mytocles mentioned Carl Hiaasen, I have to throw in Tim Dorsey.  He has been likened to "Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard on crack".  He weaves many threads through a book filled with dark, satiric humor and over-the-top violence.  The protagonist of most of his (loosely tied together) books is a sociopathic mass-murdering Florida history buff named Serge, usually accompanied by his drug-addled idiot of a best friend Coleman.  Dorsey isn't for everybody, but if you're in the mood for some dark lunacy definitely give him a try.

I also really enjoyed the Just Cause demo once I got past the first initial hatred of how they just dumped you into the middle of sky-diving and trying to land on a freaking car right away.  The reviews have been pretty lukewarm as mentioned, but from the ones I read (IGN and IGN-UK) the problems they mentioned didn't seem to be things that would affect my view on the game too negatively.  Plus,  I was just kind of happy to see an open-world action game that didn't involve ganstas and bitches.

I admit that trying to play the PC demo was an exercise in frustration, though, since the vehicle controls were so damn touchy using the keyboard and the cars slid all over hell.  I can understand anyone who played that version being pretty negative on it.

Plus, I forsee a delay in Crackdown since official word has been so quiet about it lately.  Unless Microsoft has just really dropped the hype ball and is plan on rolling it out and letting it die quietly before Gears of War hits (which would make me sad).

I like my 360.  I like it a lot.  It has some good games on it right now and more coming out this holiday season but most of those are action/shooters or are multi-platform.  The new JRPGs won't be released in the US until next year at the earliest.

To be honest, for the type of games you are looking for and the things you've mentioned I would seriously consider the PS2 option.  For half the price of the 360 you can pick up the console and 4 awesome, classic games from a huge library.  I already have a 360 and I'm really thinking about picking up a PS2 to catch up on all the games I've missed.

I also know that the infamous horse armor for Oblivion was planned and modelled well before release, since it was actually shown in a magazine that came out well before the game did.  The least they could have done is offer it as a free introductory incentive thing (but I don't think we need to beat that dead horse anymore).

Then look at the Lumines Live debacle, where you can't even play all of the standard levels in the game without downlading additional content packs.  Hopefully the release delay has something to do with a retooling of this crap, although I highly doubt it.

And of course the hypothetical Gran Tourismo HD coming seriously stripped down and charging for all those hundreds of cars and tracks which used to be part of the standard package is causing understandable outrage.  If they do end up going with that sytsem I would almost bet money that the majority of content would come on the disc anyway and just have to be unlocked since it would take gigs of space (and lots of time) to download it onto a relatively limited hard drive.

As long as there are hardcore fans or completists around to download the content for these games this is going to continue and there isn't a damn thing I can personally do about it since my $4 won't be missed from the greater mass of income.
