I guarantee that I will love FlatOut UC once it finally comes in stock locally, but if I had to choose only one I'd probably have to go with Stuntman simply becaue I already have the past two FlatOut games.  The Stuntman demo was OK but didn't really hook me.  The full game, on the other hand, is just loaded full of awesome fun.

PGR3 kind of died an early death for me, so my interest in PGR4 is lower than I expected.  I may pick it up cheap later on.

They can sell as many copies as they can make. It doesn't change the fact that I think the Halo series is overhyped and overblown suckage. But then again I hated "Titanic" when I saw it opening night, so what do I know?

Yeah, Titanic was a load of crap.

I've played all the maps. Pretty fun, I really like some of the map design. Very cool stuff. It's a fairly demanding game, though, so you need a fairly good computer to play and enjoy it.

In-game name: Mattc0m

More demanding than the demo?  I was able to run that on my older PC with some lower/medium settings.

I've never waited 20 minutes in a line at a store if it wasn't insane Christmas rush time.  The longest I have waited in a line in the last year was at GameStop about a month ago trying to buy some used cables, and that left a very bad taste in my mouth.  I know for a fact that Target's policy is that if there are more than two people at a register they are supposed to open another one to help more people.  Plus, you can just buy it right at the electronics counter and skip the front of the store altogether.  Circuit City and Best Buy very rarely have more than one person waiting at the registers and the transactions are usually quite quick.

You guys might want to take a look at everything releasing on or before November 20th.  That's when a lot of games come out for the PS3.  That's also likely the release time for the system.

The key is, if it doesn't appeal to you now, when the games do come out this year, and early next year, would you buy it then?

The PS3 is my lead console for multiplatform games, I dislike the way my 360 handles things, not to mention its unreliability.  I can understand when people don't want to pay more just to play multiplatform games on a new system, but there's a lot of exclusives in the works for 2008, and even a few left to release this 2007.

The only exclusives I can see on or before November 20 are Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Haze and Time Crisis 4.  I'm pretty sure Ratchet & Clank will be a quality game, but the others are all a toss-up.

And maybe it will be worthwhile next year when other games are released and there is a cheaper system on the market, but that doesn't do much for making me want to buy one now or to justify the price for so few exclusives.  I have no doubt that there will be some quality games for the PS3 in the future, but for now I'm more than happy with all the awesome games on my 360.

Picked up FUC (huh?) as well as PGR4 today. FUC is a lot of fun. Irritatingly it displays a bit crunched on my widescreen monitor with my VGA cable (and yes, I've tried about a billion fixes, none work; oddly Halo 3 looks just fine). Anyway, FUC is it's usual insanely fun self. I had the original on the PC and this seems just as much fun.

I used to have that problem when I ran games through the VGA connection to a monitor (I use component since I got my new TV).  Specifically, Gears of War and Lego Star Wars 2 were bad at not working correctly above 640x480.  I think Epic eventually released a patch to fix it in Gears.

I pre-order all the time.  I do it out of convenience.  I like paying for a game (in full) well before its release.  This way on release day I just walk in and walk out with my game.  It's all about convenience.

This makes zero sense to me.  The time taken is the same amount, just shifted.  Plus it actually takes longer to preorder since you have to give them your personal information.

Not to mention that even though you preordered you still have to do twice as many transactions and wait in line the second time to pick up your game.

I saw the backwards compat nixing rumor too.  I...I don't get it.  How do you save costs by cutting software emulation?

I'm not buying a system without the backwards compatibility.  I just want my entertainment system to play all my games, not become a console history museum display.

If it's $400 with B.C., I'm in eventually.  Hopefully it'll drop to $300 by the time I'm ready to buy one.

Current PS3s have the emotion engine built into a chip inside the PS3. Essentially there's a PS2 inside a PS3. Upcoming versions will be relying on software emulation, which the PS3 is no doubt powerful enough to do.

At least this is what I think is happening.

I believe that's already happened with the 80GB version as well as the 60GB PAL version.  What wonderpug was saying is that it obviously doesn't save them any money to not use the software emulation that they already have in those versions, so it's not like they will have no backwards compatibility.

Well, since I finished up the major scenes in Stuntman I think I'm going to pick this up today.  So far the reviews are coming in very well (8.5-IGN, 8.8-Team XBox, 9-1Up) and I've been a fan of the series so I just can't resist.  I'm glad to hear that they also have the more traditional career mode (now called Flatout) in addition to the mode that was in the demo (Carnage).

I noticed that they're selling it for $50, which is a nice change.  So anybody else grabbing this one?

I'm surprised at the reviews so far.  Not that they are bad, but I was expecting all 9+ based on how improved it looks over PGR3, the large number of diverse cars and everything.

I'd like to try it out, but I don't know if I could go back to the unforgiving cone runs in PGR after playing Stuntman: Ignition where you can knock over a can or run into something and it won't break your combo.  There's still plenty of challenge to be had with the number of "close" multipliers you can get and the points you get more points the closer you are to something.

Wow, I know MS is all about the "We refuse to comment on rumors or speculation" but that's a pretty wimpy denial.  For the sake of their investors I would expect a much firmer "NO!".

A wimpy denial to a wimpy rumor, if they made any more out of it people might actually suspect some truth to the matter.

I can't agree with that- they could shut the whole thing down instantly with "There is absolutely no truth to this rumor whatsover."
I think that this is the most important point here. The lack of an official denial does not necessarily bode well.

The thing about commenting on rumors is that if your corporate policy is to never comment on them, then you never comment on them.  As soon as you begin denying some rumors but not others, you begin walking on shaky ground and I think they would prefer to be able to always be consistent.

Character creation video looks really good, though I wish there were more stances (like Rock/Punk/Goth) to choose from.

When someone commented that it was sad there was no facial hair shown as an option, my favorite Harmonix rep replied, "I won't go into details, but there's more than what that video shows."

Holy crap!  That is a TON of options for speccing out your character.  I was expecting 4-5 hair options and some outfits, but that is pretty awesome, even if I'll never see it as I'm busy playing.  smile

From what it looks like you can't make like a fatter dude, it's either skinny or muscular and the females look even more indistinct.  Not all rock stars are shaped like that.

Are we still talking about the same "shirt with some lights on it?"

So please point out where the bomb is in that pic.

If I put a PC motherboard on my shirt, are you going to call that a bomb, too?

Please point out where it looks like children's backpacks or shoes that light up.

And if you wore a motherboard to an airport, you're damn straight I would want security to check you out.

Returning to the Boston Logan incident, I'm not in favor of calling it a "hoax device" or a "fake bomb," as I personally don't think there was any intentional deception that went on.  I do think it easily fits the bill for a "suspicious device" or "suspicious activity," and I would also give that classification to a shirt with a motherboard glued on.

It doesn't have to look like a bomb in an airport for me to want the authorities to check out the situation.  If someone carries in a big cardboard box that says "NOT A BOMB!" on the side in magic marker, I would want them detained for questioning.

Man, I guess I need to get some new luggage.  slywink

What I experienced of the Quake Wars demo wasn't bad, but it seemed very close to the Battlefield series.  Something that has been done before for the most part.  Some things seemed improved or tweaked to help you out, but not as much as I was expecting I think.

I did play the Humans more than the Strogg because didn't like the Strogg weapons all that much, so that may make a difference.

As I commented in the other thread where I posted this video, I thought it looked pretty boring.  I didn't think the weapons had very good visual or sound effects to give you a feeling of actually shooting them, and it seemed very repetitive.  Hopefully the melee looks a bit more interesting.

Maybe that was a poor point to take a video or not the best classes to show, but I thought that looked terribly boring.  Not to mention the repetitive gun fire sounds.  I'm sure the game is deeper than that, but it looked a bit like a poor version of Serious Sam with loot or something.  I'd like to see some melee combat and see if that looks any more appealing.

10357  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Halo 3 discs come pre scratched on: September 29, 2007, 05:41:59 PM
Well my experience with Best Buy was not quite as pleasant.  Since I ordered it online with the deal to buy Halo 3 and get 1600 marketplace points for $4.99 I am unable to return or exchange my game without them also charging me full price for the points.  That was the only reason I ordered this damn thing online and I wouldn't have bought the points if they weren't $15 cheaper than normal.  The service desk guy in the store was not helpful, and the non-English speaker on their hotline was even less so.  All I want is a copy of the game without a metal case that's all dented and discs all scratched, but that is apparently too freaking difficult.  Fuck Best Buy.

So I've been patiently (and sometimes not-so-patiently) awaiting my copy of Halo 3 to arrive in the mail all week.  I preordered from Best Buy online to get in a couple deals they had going and I've put off buying a local copy because I was sure mine would arrive by the weekend.  Well, it finally arrived in the mail today.

However, fate played a cruel trick on me and I also got a phone call saying that I will have my second interview for a programming job first thing Monday morning.  This is an awesome opportunity to get back into my field of programming, and at a game company on a great project no less, but I am in dire need of scraping some rust from my skillset so I can impress.

So here I am with the hot new game everybody is playing and talking about, just urging me to play it all weekend and be able to take part in the discussions, and yet I really need to spend my time studying.  Argh!  What a cruel mistress.  Wish me luck!
