You can also buy a composite cable set if all you want to play on your TV is movies, music, pictures, etc.  Games won't run on the composite cables, but they are available for those without component input on their TV.

And why do you say this?

Several things.  First off, these guys are not Blizzard no matter how much they want you to believe it, and I don't think their individual names will carry as much weight with the casual and overseas fans.

But perhaps more importantly, the environment has changed.  Other than a few distinct titles, PC Gaming is not doing nearly as well as it was back then.  Hellgate is launching at the peak of three new console systems, whereas Diablo 2 hit the market at the end of a console cycle before the PS2 had even been released here.  Diablo 2 launched in June with basically no competition, these guys are coming right in the middle of a 3-way console shitstorm with some hugely anticipated games like Halo 3, Mass Effect, Ratchet & Clank, Mario Galaxy, etc.

Personally I don't think the game has the more universal visual appeal of Diablo, and it requires a higher end system to run it looking decent.

Then there is the fact that you can look at the general feeling towards this game and even hardcore gamers are not that excited for it.  Their pricing structure has obviously not gone over well and is leaving some gamers feeling like they won't be getting the full game unless they pony up an extra $10 a month.

I will be happy to eat my hat if this game is as successful as Diablo, but I just don't see it happening.

One of this fall's big notches in the PS3 belt now gone until 2008.

Oh, boy, I totally didn't see that coming.  What with all the hype and concrete details they've been giving us.  slywink

And I think you guys are discounting the fact that the whole reason they launched when they did was to get Blu-Ray to the market.  Had the PS3 been delayed a year the HD movie market would probably be drastically different, Blu-Ray parts would not be as cheap as they have become because there would have been a lot less of them made, and Sony would have screwed themselves on two fronts.

It's easy to defend.

It's their game.  You don't have to buy it.  You don't have a right to own it.  Once owning it, you don't have a right to any service they deem fit to offer.

Easy, isn't it?

Now, with all that being said?  If it proves too unpopular, who knows?  They might change that later down the line.  Personally, I don't see it being an issue.  I mean, c'mon.  Hellgate is basically a small-scale MMO.  They're going to give us upgraded content (they say), and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.  Besides, i plan on paying $150 up front and the never have to worry about it agaiin.

Of course, it probably means I won't get Guitar Hero 3 or Rock Band until 2008, but hey.  That's a choice I have to make.

That means you're pretty sure its worth the cost right? I still wont say its a MMO in the traditional sense at all. They have encorporated "some" aspects of that, enough to warrant them asking for a monthly fee? I don't think so.

Gate...Open...Flood.....End of PC gaming as we know it........Potentially.

Right.  To me, it's worth the cost.  My basis for this is the performance of Diablo 2, given that the majority of the people involved in D2 are at Flagship.  Take a look at the Xfire stats for Diablo 2.  Last month, it was the #1 most-played non-MMO.

If you think Hellgate is going to do even 1/10th of what Diablo 2 did, I think you are delusional.

For any one that's interested, it's on sale at Target this week for regular price but you get a $10 gift card with it.  It's certainly tempting me, but I think I will try to hold off since there are so many other games coming out in the next month or two.

One, it doesn't look like a MMO (they talk about it being a FPS all over the place); two, I don't have a PhysX card (nor will I EVER be buying one); and three, has anybody even heard of this game until now? And it launches in a month?

One, it isn't an MMO, it's just an online shooter.  Two, you don't need a PhysX card to play the game.  Three, I have heard of it before.  And four, it's free!  Quitcher bitchin!  slywink

This one has been in development for a while and has always been targetted at either being a free release or a special PhysX pack in.  I don't think they expect it to knock Unreal Tournament 3 around or anything, it's just putting something out there for people to play and enjoy.   (what has the world come to when I'm not the voice of negativity?)

Played a bit of DiRT on the 360, and tried out the FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage, Skate and Tony Hawk Proving Grounds demos as well.

Even though I installed the Quake Wars demo when it first came out I just tried it for the first time last night and had a good time.  It actually ran on my system.  It seemed pretty much along the lines of Battlefield, but I didn't try the Strogg yet so maybe they change it up a bit.

10342  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sega Rally Revo on: September 17, 2007, 01:58:31 PM
The demo for this one just went up on the XBox Live Marketplace so I downloaded it and gave it a whirl.  My first impressions are pretty mixed.  On the one hand it looks great with colorful and detailed tracks and cars that look good clean or with the mud packed on.  The tracks have a nice deforming groove feature that alters your handling and makes for an ever-changing fastest line on the track.

On the other hand, the game doesn't feel like much of an improvement over the old Sega Rally arcade games.  The cars whip around at the barest touch of the analog stick, there are invisible walls the keep you on the track no matter what, and there is no damage modeling at all.

IGN UK reviewed it and gave it an 8.8, mostly knocking it for a lack of tracks, cutomization and damage modeling.  They said it takes half a dozen races to really get a handle on the controls, but I only ran a couple races before I was done with it.  I think my October racing dollars will be going for PGR4 and FlatOut: UC.

Oh, there is also a PSP version coming out, and curiously enough it's being developed by Bugbear, the guys that behind FlatOut and Rally Trophy.

Congrats on purchasing what may be the most overlooked gaming system out there right now smile  There's a ton of great stuff in almost every genre on the PSP - glad to see folks are still giving it a chance...

Really liking the PSP so far, but I still think the DS is the better system. Looking through what I have may missed in the puzzle/strategy/RPG area, it doesn't seem like there is a lot out there. Now if you like action games, it does seem the PSP is superior (I don't though).

Really? I thought there were a ton of RPG games for PSP, although they are almost exclusively Japanese or tactical (with Dungeon Siege being the one exception I can think of).

For puzzlers I've heard great things about Crush and want to pick it up soon (though likely not until it hits $20), and of course there are Lumines, Puzzle Quest, Mercury Meltdown, Luxor, Exit, Sudoku, Crossword, etc.

You're right that there are quite a few action and racing games on the PSP, though.  Thankfully those are a couple of my favorite genres.

Really hope Reality Pump makes more RPGs as this isn't bad for what I assume is their first RPG as I mainly know of them doing RTS.

They also did the quietly released KnightShift from a few years ago.  It was sort of an isometric action-RPG with some RTS elements in the campaign or straight action-RPG in another mode.  It was well received in eastern Europe, I think.

Yeah, but you have to engage it by clicking down on both sticks, and that is just freaking retarded, especially in a game where you are otherwise keeping your thumb on the buttons.  If it was easier or did it automatically when your "awesome guage" was filled, then I might like it.

Haha, that is nice.  He even tweaked it right into her face.

Since you just resurrected this thread I might as well give my impressions  of the demo now that I've been able to try it.

Overall I was impressed and enjoyed it.  It took a little bit to get the hang of the FlickIt controls, but not too long.  I did find myself having a bit of wiggle-fever trying to do some moves.  I wish these games had an optional slo-mo bullet time that would engage as soon as you ollie.  My brain just doesn't handle trying to do all those goofy movements in such a short amount of time.

I would prefer to have the push-off buttons be RB and LB so that I could keep my thumbs on the sticks, but I guess that doesn't go with their theme of one finger for each are of the body type thing.  Maybe you can remap them in the full game, but I doubt it.  Stupid EA, it would be easier to change it to that way (Tony Hawk does it).

I can't do manuals for shit, and after trying for a while I don't think I would want to have to rely on those to pass challenges.  Not fun.  Fail.

I kind of liked the low camera, but if they don't have an option for another one, then they are dumb.  I think the overall theme here is that you should let the players play the game how they want and not force all of your ideas on them.

What a tragedy.

Burns died quite some time ago. IIRC it was sometime in the mid or late 90's.

Actually, from wiki:

Late on Friday, November 25, 2005, four years to the day after winning the World Rally Championship, Burns died at the age of 34, after having been in a coma for some days as a result of a brain tumour.

I thought it would have been odd had his rally game been developed well after his death.

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror is definitely a great game, and you can get it for $15 new at places like Best Buy.  The sequel is coming out in just a few weeks and hopefully it lives up to Dark Mirror.

I think as far as standard civ/sim type games it might be pretty slim pickin's.  Not exactly my genre so don't follow them to much.  Warhammer 40k: Squad Commander looks like a cool turn-based strategy game, and it comes out in November I think.  Maybe also check out Field Commander.

I bought one tonight, the 2000 (I refuse to say slim, since it's not any slimmer) and had a bitch of a time getting it online. Took me an hour. It turned out to be because of the silly text entry system. It uses a phone pad style keyboard to enter text and I was inserting a space after every letter in the WPA key. Took me that long to figure it out. I was getting pissed. So far I love the thing (graphics are 1000x better than the DS, but the DS is by far my most used system), but I am still shocked that they used such a horrible text entry system. Why don't they give you a normal keyboard display to type stuff in?

And Jeane D'Arc is amazing!

Well, it is slimmer.  Something like 20% slimmer and 33% lighter.

I had trouble with that stupid text entry the first few times too, but I kind of got used to it.  I still prefer a regular looking keyboard entry system.  I also believe that there is an alternative key entry system that you can choose, but I'll have to wait until I get home to check on that.
10360  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: How ya use a PSP online? on: September 15, 2007, 05:40:55 AM
The PSP has built-in WiFi and a web browser, so as long as you have access to a wireless network it's all free.  If you don't, then you can either go someplace that has free wifi (like a coffe shop, bookstore, etc) , or get a wireless router for your house I guess.

For demos, music and stuff you can download those on your computer and use a USB cable to dump them to your PSP's memory card, as well as get some stuff from the PSP Spot download stations in certain stores.
