Despite some less than great voice acting, you really can't go wrong with a Giant Nazi Robot!!
10082  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Desktop Tower Defense - go Gaming Trend team! on: April 23, 2007, 10:10:18 PM
Yeah, the flying waves is a great time to send the next ones early (especially since they are always two Normal waves after the flyers) as long as you have some decent anti-air towers up.

I've found I can usually only get the flying bosses down if I have at least one flying tower (preferably 2 or 3) up to max upgrade.  That really increases the range, damage and speed of firing for them.  It just really hard for me to sit there and do nothing while building up that 310 gold to do that final upgrade.

Well, F. What are the other AAA titles that come out before September? Seems like a big drought is about to hit.  icon_cry

Rumors say Quake Wars.  smile

Yeah, but that's PC only and some of us (not naming names) don't have top of the line PCs anymore.

As for 360 games for this summer, they may not all be AAA, but some scheduled games I'm looking forward to checking out: Forza 2, Shadowrun, Tenchu Z, The Darkness, Dirt: Colin McRae Off-Road, Overlord, Two Worlds, Stranglehold, Stuntman: Ignition, and Sega Rally Revo.  I'm sure some of those will get delayed, too.
10084  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Albums that blew your mind on: April 23, 2007, 08:58:38 PM
I would put Tool's Aenima as one of mine, ahead of Lateralus.

And the same old Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon and to a lesser extent The Wall.

I'd also say White Zombie - Astro Creep 2000.  It is just such a perfect mix of heavy music with a real groove to it.  Nothing can quite get my adrenaline pumping like this album.  Add in things like organ grinder music, middle-eastern drum beats, funky wa guitar and it all adds up to awesome.
10085  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Desktop Tower Defense - go Gaming Trend team! on: April 23, 2007, 08:36:50 PM
Yep, every second earlier you send the next wave gives you bonus points.  I usually end up with around 500 bonus points by doing this.  I think you might also get bonus points for how much gold you have left at the end of the game.

My big problem is that sometimes I forget to look at home much time is left before the next wave and by the time I click on the Send Next Wave button the timer has run out so I basically get two waves at the exact same time.  That usually doesn't go so well with the later waves.
10086  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360BC] Mercenaries. on: April 23, 2007, 08:15:33 PM
I was playing Mercs the other day and didn't run into any crashes or minimap problems, but I only played for a couple hours.

I noticed at my local GameStop that the sign for 2-for-1 was only for the XBox section and not elsewhere.  I wanted to pick up a couple older Cube games to play on my Wii but decided to take a pass since the signs weren't up for those (and the counter-jockies were busy).

10088  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: XBLA Double Shot this Week - EETS and Pinball FX [56k] on: April 23, 2007, 08:01:48 PM
Instead of doing double-shots like this why don't they release one game a week so they can guarantee releases for later in the year.  I would prefer that to having so many weeks with nothing coming out, and it would give each game a better shot at the spotlight as well as just looking better in their PR not to have gaps like that.

As for these two games, they both look interesting but I'll try out the demos and debate the pricepoint.
10089  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 4-23-07 Weekend Recap Club Edition on: April 23, 2007, 06:23:21 AM
I rented Lost Planet and played the first couple levels in that.  I also took advantage of the recent backwards compatibility update and played a bit of Mercenaries.

I took the Wii over to my friend's house and played a little bit of Wii Sports, SSX Blur and Excite Truck.

I think my most time spent on a game this weekend must go to Desktop Tower Defense.  Waaay too fun and addictive for a little game.

I think I am one of the few that has been able to avoid seeing those images.  I feel like some sort of internet virgin, and I don't mind staying that way.

Although I used to have a friend who would occasionally browse and I would catch pictures of horrible accidents and the like.  Not a fan of that.  At all.
10091  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Bourne Ultimatum trailer online.... on: April 22, 2007, 09:50:30 PM
Based on that trailer I would definitely see this one.  I might have to re-watch the first two to get back into the mood.  I had read the first book just before the first movie came out and I was a bit too hung up on how different the story was to enjoy that one.

Now I just need to decide if I should start on the next one right away or maybe take a break.  I'd hate to forget any of the characters, since there's so many.

Don't worry, half of those characters will die and you will get new ones in their place anyway.  slywink   Heheh, of course most of the same characters continue to show up but with the changes in each book he starts to follow different people in the different areas of conflict.

But if you're anything like me you will soon be jonesing for more and will go right back for the next one.  And they don't disappoint.

Yeah, I think it might be best if they went the route of Ground Control and World in Conflict with no real resources, or something like Dawn of War with control points to capture.
10097  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Desktop Tower Defense - go Gaming Trend team! on: April 22, 2007, 09:23:40 AM
I guess the secret is to use just a few fully upgraded towers like you say.  When I started I was doing one or two upgrades on every one of my towers and towards the end it just wasn't cutting it.  I thought with all the back and forth it would help for each of those guys to be doing better damage but a couple maxed out ones were better.

I did kind of like the Bash Tower, since when it is fully upgraded it has a 20% chance of stunning ground enemies and does decent damage.  That works great if you can funnel those big groups all around it, but they end up to be so expensive it may not be worth it.
10098  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Desktop Tower Defense - go Gaming Trend team! on: April 22, 2007, 05:32:55 AM
I can't stop playing this game either, but I can't quite understand how you are getting such high scores.  You're doubling my best scores and by the time I die I am getting overrun by two groups at once.  Usually those damnable flying guys on top of another group and they all get by.

Of course, I've only played four games so far, but I just feel like a tool when I'm doing my best and just getting worked over.

It's also worth noting that a lot of the speed tests you can do will give you reports in Kb (kilobits) per second, while that screenshot Eco-Logic is showing, and likely the speeds you are seeing in your downloads, are reported in KB (kilobytes) per second which will be 1/8 of the speed by definition.

And like KD said, most downloads are throttled by the server you are downloading from so it's not really your connection limiting it.

I haven't played many traditional adventure games other than Sam & Max lately, but I agree that one is highly recommended and it should be available in complete form soon.

I remember Indigo Prophecy getting some good response, though I haven't played it myself.

Checking out the lists of Adventure game reviews at places like IGN or GameSpot shows that there were quite a few released last year, some of which got decent marks.  It might be worth scanning those lists for ones that appeal to you.

I have to say that I've been extremely impressed with the upload speeds I've been getting reported through my Comcast cable connection lately.  I used to get pretty crappy upload speeds around 300Kb/s but the last few times I've tested my line I get upwards of 1500Kb/s.  That's well over what it is rated at.
10106  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Westboro Baptist Church at it Again on: April 21, 2007, 07:12:26 PM
I think the thing that sticks out with religious zealots like this lady and other outspoken Christian bigots or whatever is the hypocrisy of their views.  It seems to run directly counter to what most of us think of as the over-arching virtues of Christianity, such as living by the Golden Rule and loving your neighbor and all that.

If you heard a Destructive Anarchic Satanist (I just made that religion up, so hopefully it doesn't offend anybody) saying things like this you might think "Well, I certainly don't agree with him, but that's pretty much what you expect from their belief system".  Hearing somebody who proclaims to be a Christian be thankful for death, destruction, war, disease, etc just seems absurd and wrong.
10107  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Car porn (Forza 2) on: April 21, 2007, 06:59:50 PM
I see that there is a new video and screenshots over at the Forza Motorsport site in their Weekly Pitpass report.  They have a whole write-up about stuff, and at the bottom you can download a high-res video of some GT class cars racing on Mugello (or watch the smaller streaming version, but who wants to do that).

Unfortunately nobody loses it into a wall, but it certainly looks good.  Reports are that it is still on for a May release but has been pushed back to the 29th, so just a little over a month to wait.

The 360 doesn't upconvert natively over VGA though right? I mean, the regular dvd drive? Because it sure as heck looks like crap when I watch it on my 22' LCD-and I was always wondering about that.

As long as you select a resolution from the System menu I think that it plays the movie at that size.  The movies I've watched on my 21" CRT monitor seem to look really good, and certainly better than on my SD TV.
10112  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Looking for X-box games for 360.. on: April 21, 2007, 03:32:27 PM
Fable is a pretty good action RPG type thing, but it's more about doing stuff and developing your character than story.  You can get the Lost Chapters version (extra content) for less than $10 used.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey might be a good bet if you never played it on the PC.  More traditional PC type adventure game instead of RPG, though.  Same goes for Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit in Europe).

I finally got a chance to try this demo out and I have to agree with you guys.  I might be willing to give it a try if it was from the Arcade or a very cheap budget release, but no way would I buy this.

Part of the problem is that the game just starts out a little hectic and you have no clue what's going on.  For me on my monitor (only 21") I couldn't tell where the weapons were, when I picked one up, how much ammo I had or where to get more and all sorts of other vital information that should be second nature in a game like this.  Bleah.

The games are vastly different in feel and function. I don't mean they've changed what it is; they just executed it WAY BETTER. It's not a "same engine - different story" release at all.

*shrug* It was to me.

Most all of the reviews I've read have said the exact same thing, so you're not alone.

If you just do a search for "Jonathan Coulton in LA" you can see pretty good live renditions of some of his songs.  And Baby Got Back, too.  Of course you don't get the WoW graphics videos along with it, but that's secondary anyway.

But, if you like the WoW videos with the songs, check out Spiffworld where the creator of those videos has some more for you.  smile
