10082  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Chromehounds at Target - free $10 GC on: July 16, 2006, 11:50:51 PM
I was just perusing the Sunday ads in the paper and saw that if you pick up Chromehouds at Target (for the full $59.99, unfortunately) you get a free $10 Target Gift Card.  Not quite as good as $10 off, but who can't find something to buy at Target sometime, right?

That's what I was saying, it used to be real, but that was a long, long time ago.

Hehe, pardon me.  I think I skipped over that first part of your post.

10086  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sony Kills Off UMD Movies on: July 16, 2006, 02:06:53 AM
Can you find any source that says what resolution the UMD movies actually are?  Everything I run across only references the resolution of the PSP itself but not the movie or the fact that they are sampled down for that screen.

Supposedly EB is going to give this out when you preorder.  I might do that.  $5 and I can always get it back if I dont want the game.  I just wish it was on Live instead.

Yeah, if I had to guess I would assume that's what the deal is: preorder the game with a down payment and get a demo disc.
10088  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sony Kills Off UMD Movies on: July 15, 2006, 11:23:51 PM
I guess it was more of an assumption that I made about the resolution given the size of the PSP screen and that the UMD can only hold a max of 1.8 GB (dual layered) vs a standard DVD of 4.7GB or 9 for double layer.  I would like to know how they can put a full resolution movie and goodies on a format that is at best 1/3 of the size of a DVD.  I suppose they just cut out the extra features and things like audio channels and options.
10089  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sony Kills Off UMD Movies on: July 15, 2006, 07:09:54 PM
I'm not sure how they really ever expected this proprietary format to survive anyway.  From the beginning it was obvious that an expensive, lower-resolution format that is only viewable on their expensive hand-held game system was a terrible idea.  I was surprised they sold any of the goddamn things to begin with.
10090  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Amazing Screw-On Head! Watch now and vote for more! on: July 15, 2006, 07:05:28 PM
That was pretty good and definitely has some potential.  I can't say that I liked the first couple minutes, though.  You were really just thrown in there and had no idea who anybody was or what was going on.  I really figured that something was screwed up and I had started watching in the middle.  That style of action before the intro may work well after the show is established, but not for a pilot episode.  The Mr Dog thing is also going to get old if they keep running it into the ground.  Speaking of, was that some sort of sand-filled rubber zombie-dog or what?

Overall, it seems like with the irreverant humor it would be a better fit for the crowd that watches Adult Swim or something other than Sci-Fi (which pretty much only shows shitty movies like "Python vs Your Mom 2").

Did you know that James Buchanan was the only president who was never married?

I just got informed of a slightly better deal to save 12% off your order if you, like me, are a new customer to Overstock.  At this rate, I'm getting the premium 360, a Play and Charge kit, and a Microsoft VGA connector for $20 less than it would cost me to pick up just the system in store with tax.  Cha-ching!
10093  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / I want to see The Prestige very, very badly on: July 15, 2006, 02:27:06 AM

Please don't ban me, but I'm a bit sick of seeing Scarlett Johansson everywhere.  I enjoyed her in Lost in Translation but she just strikes me as a bad actress.
10094  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / classic comic books remembered on: July 15, 2006, 02:17:49 AM
If you like reading about comics, you should definitely check out The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon.  While it is fiction and not solely about comics (following two creators during the golden age), it is definitely a good read.  You know, Pulitzer and all that.
10095  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / TEAM FORTRESS 2 LIVES! on: July 15, 2006, 02:01:20 AM
I think it looks pretty snazzy.  Like a much better looking version of Evil Genius.  I applaud them for going in a new direction with the game and I think not looking like every other multiplayer military FPS on the market will be beneficial.  The extremely unique silhouette of each character class is also intriguing.
10096  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Titan Quest Character Screens on: July 15, 2006, 01:57:10 AM
Here's my guy:

They really tout the "Highly Customizable Characters", and while that may be true of the class selection system they need some serious help in the visual customization field.  Starting out with only 1 male and 1 female body is bad enough, but the armor is pretty blah (albeit realisticly so).  The only interesting piece I did see was an Obsidian Helm, which was black with electric blue lines in it.

I also question having large sets of armor for low to mid level characters since by the time you even find two pieces of the same set they are worse than other non-set pieces which abound.

That was from the original post. The extra $20 off is no longer working. Still, a 360 for $360 (hmmm.....) is a pretty good deal.

Ah, I see.  Thanks.  And you are right that $360 is a heck of a price for an XBox 360.  Plus saving the 10% on any peripherals and games you buy along with it.   smile

I rented that one a couple weeks ago when it came out and it was pretty good.

The movie "The River's Edge" being released this week is actually a 1957 western.  "River's Edge" from 1986 has been on DVD for a few years I think.  I haven't seen either of them, though.

A very good point.

I am still resolutely skeptical on Techland, though.  I would love to see an awesome new western shooter, but from what I've seen this will not be it.

I've found that the green vendor items actually get cheaper the further I went in the game!  As I mentioned in an early post, I bought some early green items from a vendor for over 200k gold, but for the last half of the game I hardly see any that go for over 100k even though they are obviously superior to the lower level items.

I'm going to switch it up a little and ask what you guys would like to see in the inevitable expansion/sequel?

Personally, I think it would fit fairly well to explore into Norse lands and mythology.  And then allow 2-handed weapons so I can use a big ol' broadsword to chop of some wendel heads!

Neversoft is located in Woodland Hills, California, actually.

As far as I know there has been no confirmation of complete hardware-based backwards compatibility.  This would certainly be a plus for the legion of PS2 owners if it does happen.

From what I've read elsewhere, the initial run of PS3's will basically have PS2 hardware inside to ensure backwards compatibility.  The software emulation isn't coming along as quickly as they hoped and won't be done in time.  They hope to eventually do it all in software, but not right away.  Obviously this adds to of the cost of the system.

Found a link.

Speculation from a Japanese magazine is not exactly firm data.  As I said, it hasn't been confirmed.
10120  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3's good points? on: July 04, 2006, 11:28:52 PM
I hate to turn this into another "what's wrong with the PS3" thread, but I see a couple points of contention with what you said.

As far as I know there has been no confirmation of complete hardware-based backwards compatibility.  This would certainly be a plus for the legion of PS2 owners if it does happen.

Free online play does sound good, but it is another feature which has very few details and is unproven beyond individual games such as Socom.  While I am not a big fan of paying for XBox Live, they provide many features and a system-wide integration which argueably can not be implemented in Sony's proposed open architectural plans.

The one thing that it does potentially have going for it is the larger storage capacity of the Blu-Ray discs, which will come in handy in the future with the continually increasing size of art assets in games.
