10081  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Are you the destroyer of threads? on: July 20, 2006, 02:58:42 PM
It seems as is nearly everybody (or at least those prone to checking this thread) believe themselves to be a thread destroyer to some extent.  Possibly because those threads which never got a reply or further activity stick out in our minds more than ones that died on someone else's watch.

The downside is that's about all I think it has going for it. I expect more from an OS than an overhaul of the GUI.

Not to worry!  It will also require at least double the power to run!

Now I'm curious, did Liberty City Stories have the recruitment thing also like San Andreas?
I haven't played through the story just go on my usual killing sprees without really following any story line, and best (worst?) of all, the law enforcement AI doesn't do a damn thing no matter what I do in the PSP version. WTF?

No offense, but if all you do is go on killing sprees and do none of the missions or story stuff why would you buy each of the new games?
10085  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Interesting Article for those that insist PC Gaming is dying on: July 20, 2006, 12:59:43 AM
My big problem with this whole new Microsoft push for gaming on Vista is that the new OS doesn't seem to be designed for the actual important part of gaming, ie performance.

For all I care their special gaming folders and embedded ESRB ratings can go fuck themselves.  What I really want is a system designed with a feature that lets me either do a stripped-down performance-based gaming boot of the system or a one button option to shutdown all the superfluous Windows processes and threads that are hogging valueable system resources.  When they finally do that, then I might consider that they give a shit about gaming on Windows and are doing something useful about it.

I loved GTA and Saints Row has exactly what I've always wanted in GTA, Homies!
You can recruit homies (as they call them) to fight along side you and help you out, which is something I would have loved to see in San Andreas while going on my free roam killing sprees.

They did have that in San Andreas.  Depending on your "rep" or whatever it was you could grab up to six(?) of your gang members that would follow you around.  If you jumped into a four-door vehicle three of them would jump in with you and shoot at rival gangs, cops or whatever you started shooting at.

Disarm, with those sorts of serious problems cropping up only when you put higher stress on the video settings, you may be looking at overheating issues or some sort of memory corruption.

Anyone else miss the 'old TF2? The one they previewed years ago as being a military realistic shooter?

You are looking for Frontlines: Fuel of War.

Which is being developed by those who left Trauma Studios (makers of the Desert Combat mod for BF1942) when that was basically killed post BF2 release.  DiCE decided they wanted to close the New York based studio and instead of moving to Sweden to become part of Digital Illusions they formed a new studio.

While the game might be fun, I've had my fill of pimps and ho's and ganstas and fronting and all that retarded crap.  San Andreas really annoyed me with some of it's dialog.

I finally pulled the trigger on ordering a 360 (along with PGR3, VGA cables and a Play and Charge kit) via the 12% off deal.  I just picked up a used copy of Kameo because I like platformers and it was only $25.  Now I just hope the big bundle gets here before the weekend!

I was just perusing the Sunday ads in the paper and saw that if you pick up Chromehouds at Target (for the full $59.99, unfortunately) you get a free $10 Target Gift Card.  Not quite as good as $10 off, but who can't find something to buy at Target sometime, right?

10100  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sony Kills Off UMD Movies on: July 16, 2006, 02:06:53 AM
Can you find any source that says what resolution the UMD movies actually are?  Everything I run across only references the resolution of the PSP itself but not the movie or the fact that they are sampled down for that screen.

Supposedly EB is going to give this out when you preorder.  I might do that.  $5 and I can always get it back if I dont want the game.  I just wish it was on Live instead.

Yeah, if I had to guess I would assume that's what the deal is: preorder the game with a down payment and get a demo disc.
10102  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sony Kills Off UMD Movies on: July 15, 2006, 11:23:51 PM
I guess it was more of an assumption that I made about the resolution given the size of the PSP screen and that the UMD can only hold a max of 1.8 GB (dual layered) vs a standard DVD of 4.7GB or 9 for double layer.  I would like to know how they can put a full resolution movie and goodies on a format that is at best 1/3 of the size of a DVD.  I suppose they just cut out the extra features and things like audio channels and options.
10103  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Sony Kills Off UMD Movies on: July 15, 2006, 07:09:54 PM
I'm not sure how they really ever expected this proprietary format to survive anyway.  From the beginning it was obvious that an expensive, lower-resolution format that is only viewable on their expensive hand-held game system was a terrible idea.  I was surprised they sold any of the goddamn things to begin with.
10104  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Amazing Screw-On Head! Watch now and vote for more! on: July 15, 2006, 07:05:28 PM
That was pretty good and definitely has some potential.  I can't say that I liked the first couple minutes, though.  You were really just thrown in there and had no idea who anybody was or what was going on.  I really figured that something was screwed up and I had started watching in the middle.  That style of action before the intro may work well after the show is established, but not for a pilot episode.  The Mr Dog thing is also going to get old if they keep running it into the ground.  Speaking of, was that some sort of sand-filled rubber zombie-dog or what?

Overall, it seems like with the irreverant humor it would be a better fit for the crowd that watches Adult Swim or something other than Sci-Fi (which pretty much only shows shitty movies like "Python vs Your Mom 2").

Did you know that James Buchanan was the only president who was never married?

I just got informed of a slightly better deal to save 12% off your order if you, like me, are a new customer to Overstock.  At this rate, I'm getting the premium 360, a Play and Charge kit, and a Microsoft VGA connector for $20 less than it would cost me to pick up just the system in store with tax.  Cha-ching!

If you like reading about comics, you should definitely check out The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon.  While it is fiction and not solely about comics (following two creators during the golden age), it is definitely a good read.  You know, Pulitzer and all that.

I think it looks pretty snazzy.  Like a much better looking version of Evil Genius.  I applaud them for going in a new direction with the game and I think not looking like every other multiplayer military FPS on the market will be beneficial.  The extremely unique silhouette of each character class is also intriguing.
10110  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Titan Quest Character Screens on: July 15, 2006, 01:57:10 AM
Here's my guy:

They really tout the "Highly Customizable Characters", and while that may be true of the class selection system they need some serious help in the visual customization field.  Starting out with only 1 male and 1 female body is bad enough, but the armor is pretty blah (albeit realisticly so).  The only interesting piece I did see was an Obsidian Helm, which was black with electric blue lines in it.

I also question having large sets of armor for low to mid level characters since by the time you even find two pieces of the same set they are worse than other non-set pieces which abound.

That was from the original post. The extra $20 off is no longer working. Still, a 360 for $360 (hmmm.....) is a pretty good deal.

Ah, I see.  Thanks.  And you are right that $360 is a heck of a price for an XBox 360.  Plus saving the 10% on any peripherals and games you buy along with it.   smile

Actually my biggest recommendation would be Kiss Kiss Bang Bang which just recently hit disc. Everyone must go pick this up pronto.

I rented that one a couple weeks ago when it came out and it was pretty good.

The movie "The River's Edge" being released this week is actually a 1957 western.  "River's Edge" from 1986 has been on DVD for a few years I think.  I haven't seen either of them, though.
