For anybody interested, this is definitely popular enough to find constant matches.  It is up in the Steam top 10 played with over 46k concurrent today, and who knows how many playing not on Steam.

3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Tiny Metal [PC] - Advance Wars spiritual successor on: September 23, 2016, 10:20:36 PM
I saw that some Japanese developers have launched a Kickstarter for Tiny Metal as a PC-based successor to the Advance Wars turn-based tactical games that came out on Nintendo platforms.

They say they have enough funding to finish the basic game, and this is additional funds to add more content to the game.

There is gameplay video and also a 3 level prototype that you can download from the Kickstarter page.

Earlier this week I decided to reinstall Skyrim and start from scratch. Yeah, my life is already draining away. But I will say the second time is already much more fun because I don't have an overwhelming obligation to my ever-expanding quest log. If I want to do something, cool. If I want to explore somewhere and see what's there, fine. It's a relief to just sit back and find myself enveloped by the game world and as a result I'm enjoying it so much more. As an added bonus, the more time I sink into Skyrim, the less chance there is of me spending money on other games. smile

You couldn't have waited a few more weeks for the free update?  Haha.

Forza Horizon 3!!!  (once UPS gets here late this afternoon, bleh)

And more matches in Paladins, I'm sure.  And possibly a bit more Zombie Night Terror when I have time.

Everything I’ve read and seen about this game makes me think it would be right up my alley, unfortunately, everything I see also says that it is only half baked right now.  I really hope patches or a game of the year edition managed to fix everything.

There was a huge (like 5.6GB) day 1 patch, and now this one, so they're slowly improving things.  I'm really curious to know if they add back in the clearly cut end-game content via some free DLC or something.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XB1] Recore on: September 23, 2016, 12:07:01 AM
Apparently there is a new patch out for the Xbox One version that halves the loading times, so the worst ones that were 2 minutes are now "only" one minute.

Oh, somehow I completely forgot about Gas Guzzlers Extreme...it's available on Steam or consoles now as well I think.  And it's actually a really decent racing game with weapons, has single player and multiplayer.  Best of all, it's on sale on Steam this weekend!  Only $7 for the game and 2 DLC packs!

And Motorgun is another arena-type car combat game that just hit Early Access.  I'm watching it but waiting until they've done a few updates to see how often it's supported.

Here is an introduction trailer.

The console version came out a couple of months ago.  With a thud of bad reviews and not great performance, as I understand it.

Oh, yup.  Damn.  I had hoped that the console release would bring some major updates and changes to the game, but I guess that was too much to hope for.

Why, by the love of all that's holy, has no one remade I76?  I would take some "spiritual successor" nonsense, even.

Yeah, that is one of my all-time favorite games and I have been waiting for someone to take up the mantle for ages!

I'm in the alpha for Auto Age: Standoff and it is a really fun and promising car combat game.  But while it is strongly influenced by I'76 it only focuses on Twisted Metal-style arena combat.  No races or story or anything.

Of course there are games like Robocraft and Crossout and all of the build-your-vehicle combat games these days, which are fun as well.  But nothing that captures the feeling of Interstate '76.

And with their test server finally coming next week after a delay, they are talking more in depth about the changes to come:

http://tomclancy-thedivision.ubi.com/game/en-GB/news/detail.aspx?c=tcm:154-268296-16&ct=tcm:148-76770-32

To me the big problem here is that they are focusing largely on the end game.  They keep referencing "similar to the level 1-30 experience" as if that was perfect.  I thought this was going to be a larger reworking from the ground up.

I mean, I guess that's fine if they just want to keep the players who were already mostly happy with the game and just doing end-game raiding, but if they want to get back people like me who burned out early I think they need to address a lot more than just end-game stats.

They have released the minimum and recommended specs.  Which are kind of surprising, since the Minimum is below what I have and the beta still ran like absolute garbage on my machine with everything turned to Low.

Quote
Minimum:
OS: 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10
Processor: AMD FX-6350 or Intel Core i5 6600K
Memory: 8GB RAM
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB or Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 2GB
DirectX: 11.0 Compatible video card or equivalent

Recommended:
OS: 64-bit Windows 10 or later
Processor: AMD FX 8350 Wraith or Intel Core i7 4790 or equivalent
Memory: 16GB RAM
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
DirectX: 11.1 Compatible video card or equivalent

Both minimum and recommended configurations will require 50GB of hard drive space and a 512 KBPS or faster Internet connection.

Oh, and in case you're curious what they learned from the beta that is a short write-up.  Shockingly, they learned that Conquest would be better with the way it always has been.   Roll Eyes

Rock, Paper, Shotgun did a review of the Early Access version currently available and came to the conclusion that it's a great game marred by grindy leveling and microtransactions.

Quote
Put this editor together with the rampant combat and you’re left with a rough and tumble action game with tons of potential. It’s wonderful. It’s creative and brainless. It’s Besiege meets World of Tanks.

It’s also one of the grubbiest grindfests I have ever had to play. And this is where Crossout starts to fall apart.

Quote
I cannot emphasise enough how much of a shame this is, because the actual game buried underneath all this nightmarish grind-goop is excellent. Build a weird apocalypse car and go to war in it? Yes, please! If only you could make things like those shown in the exhibition tab without jumping through all these disgusting hoops. Some hoops? Fine. But not these hoops. These hoops are rotten.

Although, after reading several of the comments on the article, it seems like the author is a bit off, since the game doesn't actually have any way to buy currency right now so there are no microtransactions.  It's all in-game currency.  And the in-game market is a player-driven economy, meaning players are setting the prices and you can buy low, sell high and make money that way if you are smart.

That means the grind may still be bad right now, but it's not [currently] there to bleed you of money.  Probably will be once it goes free to play, but there will hopefully be more balancing before then.

I figured it might be worth starting this into it's own thread rather than keep hijacking the "What are you buying" one.  I have played for about 6 hours and I really like the game.

I'll repost my general thoughts and comparisons to Overwatch with some additions:

So far I'm not able to put my finger on what makes this so much more enjoyable or sticky for me than Overwatch was, but Paladins clicked right away (despite how much I don't like the name, hah).  I played like 2 games and then wanted to pay to get access to more heroes so I got the Founder's pack.  Overwatch wasn't bad by any means, but I felt very underwhelmed and got kind of bored.  Maybe it's a hype vs expectations thing?  Or pacing?

Overall this is another character-based 5v5 objective FPS with multi-match games.  Each match has 2 phases, a capture phase and a push/defend phase (push by whomever won the capture).  Winning the capture round gets you 1 point and if the pushing team wins the second phase they get a second point.  The neat thing is that if the defending team holds the push to less than half way (I think), then they get a point for defending successfully.  The time for each round is fairly limited, but there is a great Overtime mechanic so the round keeps going as long as the objective is still being contested.  First team to 4 points wins the game, so it may be over in 2 rounds or up to 4 if things are very well balanced.

Characters are slotted into 1 of 4 categories: Front Line, Attack, Flank and Support.  Each character can only be chosen by a team once, and that selection screen is clear to show you a checkbox that your team has (or doesn't have) at least one of each type.  There is a "rip off" feel to a few of the characters, like a they have similar visuals or powers to Overwatch characters, or at least that's what people have been saying.  Obviously a lot of the Overwatch characters were in turn influenced by DOTA, Heroes, etc, so that's arguable.

It doesn't bother me that much, to be honest, since this is clearly not just a cheap also-ran being shoved out the door by a fly-by-night company.  These are the same guys that made Tribes: Ascend and Smite, so they know what they're doing and I have no doubt that they'll be supporting it for a long time and defining their own look and feel.

Like Overwatch, this is definitely a shooter first, MOBA-influence second (unlike say Battleborn, which was a poor shooter in my opinion).  The action is fast and often frantic, the shooting feels good and the powers are frequent enough that I use them all the time.  The rounds go relatively quick, and even if there is a bit of a stalemate in a capture or push it never feels like there is too much time spent at any one thing, and that you have a chance to break through.

There is also a loadout card system, that basically allows you to pre-configure which of your powers you want to be better.  I was skeptical of it at first (I hate collectable card type things), but it seems fine and you have a default loadout that is good for every character.  This loadout is balanced on a points-based system, so you can have 3 great cards, or 2 decent with 3 mediocre ones, etc.

It also has in-match upgrades to buy with disposable currency you gain from normal objective stuff.  Importantly, unlike MOBAs there are relatively few and you have like 40 seconds between every round to buy them, so you aren't doing it during the match while feeling like you are wasting time that should be spent on the battlefield.

It's free to play, so you can try it out with a few characters with no overheat.  And to get the Founder's pack that gets you all characters now and in the future (plus 20 chests), it's only $13.

Oh, one down-side so far is that since it's still new and still in Early Access, a lot of the extra visual customization is a bit underwhelming.  Some characters only have color swap skins, some don't have extra heads yet, etc.  But I'm sure that's all coming.

So, the way I see it, Steam already shows if you've bought the game, but it only does this via the forums. I would include that in the reviews next to a user's name. I think getting that information at a glance could help a lot. Sort of like Amazon's "Verified Purchase" tag.  At the same time, I don't think completely disregarding off-site buying is the way to go. Instead, what they could do is include an option for some of the more popular off-site location, giving users a similar tag, like say, "Bought via Humblebundle". I think that could be a far more attractive option.

Steam doesn't allow you to leave a review for a game that isn't in your library, does it?  I just went to check this and now it looks like you may not be able to leave reviews at all unless you've put some time into it? Hmm.

Also, next to every review it shows how many hours you have put into the game (or at least number of hours you have had it running...).  That's why you often see people say "It may only show I have a couple hours into this game but I've been playing the early release for 50+ hours" or such.

I do have a question. For those familiar with the recent Forza and Forza Horizon games on Xbox One, how bad (or not bad?) would it be running on a 720p 26-inch TV? Would I hate myself? Would I eventually be coughing up more bucks for a better TV?

I don't think you would hate yourself.  I'm sure it would look fine on there, and still have all the fun.  It may not be the absolute most impressive at that size and resolution, but it's not like a step back into SD.  Plus it's a driving game, not a text-heavy adventure game.

Digital to be playable on the PC as well? I'm having a hard time spending $100 and having no trade-in option vs $48 on amazon and being able to trade in for $20 when I am done with it.

Either way I will definitely be playing.

Well if you are getting it from Amazon anyway, you can get the Ultimate Edition in disc form for only $80.

It would only work if you could buy it on the Windows 10 store, not on Steam, and it isn't on there yet either (probably not until it's approved for Xbox One).
And you don't want to buy anything on the Win10 store due to crazy DRM shenanigans and other things.

Unless you want two copies of the game on two different platforms for the price of one and think that the DRM is not much different than Steam's DRM shenanigans...

does that work both ways?  can you buy it now on pc and have it on xb1 when it hits there?

It would only work if you could buy it on the Windows 10 store, not on Steam, and it isn't on there yet either (probably not until it's approved for Xbox One).

My tastes may not run the same as yours, and I don't play many choose your own adventure type text games, so take these with a grain of salt.

The Kairosoft games are all amazing if you like sim/management type games at all.  Game Dev Story was the first one on mobile and was really excellent, but Dungeon Village, Grand Prix Story, Kairobotica, Mega Mall Story, etc were all good from what I tried.  I think most of them even have free Lite versions to try, but they were well worth a few dollars to me.

Have you tried any of the Rayman games?  Jungle Run and Fiesta Run are quite great runners and look really nice.   I imagine they are similar to what the new Mario mobile game will be, transitioning a typical platformer game into a single button input.  I don't remember how much they were to purchase at the time.

Triple Town was fun and I think has a free version.  AlphaBear by the same developer got a lot of acclaim.

Some others to look into and see if they interest you: Super Stickman Golf, 10 More Bullets, Crossy Road, Desert Golfing, Plague Inc, Prune.  That's what I can think of off the top of my head.

I might play more ReCore, but I also might wait to hear more about a patch.

For what it's worth, when this comes to the Xbox Preview program (their version of Early Access) it will also be a Play Anywhere title, so you get it on both XB1 and PC.

I guess I don't have all that much of a problem with people who got press keys not showing up in the score, as they should theoretically be represented in the Metacritic score if they are actual press giving reviews.

If they are just YouTubers or Twitch streamers who are playing the game for free promotion and entertainment (and their own financial benefit), that is very different from a critic who is playing the game with a critical eye the whole time.
