I keep being tempted to pick up this game, but I know that I suck at RTS type games so I'm not sure why.  I guess the idea of the big battles with orcs and Chaos and everything just looks and seems cool.

Are you waiting for the partner boards? You can get nvidia's board now but it is vanilla. I think the other boards will be a tad better.

I think all of the first shipment boards sold out everywhere.  I wasn't able to find one earlier today.

As for the build, looks like you're going to have some fun!  I like the fact that you got the droids in on the project.   icon_wink

So is anybody else playing this?

As I've said in other threads, I've played for a few hours so far and it seems pretty good, but hasn't really grabbed me so far.  It feels very polished but also shallow for some reason.  It's like one part of TF2 taken aside or something.  So far I regret my purchase.

I know people seem to be loving the characters and all that stuff that has been marketed to death, but they don't really do a lot for me at this point.  They look cool, but functionally it's a lot of the same things as TF2 and whatever.

They are supposed to be adding in some "competitive" mode soon, but I'm not really sure what that entails other than some season crap I don't care about.

I don't know if anybody else ended up playing this at all, but they have continued to keep putting out updates, patches and balance tweaks pretty consistently.  They just launched their big 1.4 update.

They also just launched their Heart of Gold expansion today that has a new campaign, new tile set, and more crap as usual.

Here's a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qS7VcDmOQ4

I might diddle a bit more with Overwatch, but so far it hasn't really grabbed a hold of me.

I'm actually having more fun with the TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan game, so will probably play more of that.  So far I've only been playing the multiplayer and it's a fun distraction, if not amazing.

From the time this was announced at last year's E3 I have been torn between feeling like this is another game that pulls further away from the classic Tom Clancy brand of authentic combat, and being excited for an open world game that mixes a bit of Ghost Recon, Just Cause and Far Cry.

They've just released this new trailer that doesn't do much to change that conflicted feeling, but I think I'm choosing to just be excited about it rather than continue saying "things just aren't the way they used to be".  It looks fun!

I thought the first episode was fairly entertaining, to the point where I'll tune in again. Although I have the comics, I never got around to reading them so I'm not impacted by any preconceived notions about how the series should play out.

OK, that's what I was wondering, if it held enough interest for somebody like me that has never read the comics.

I just found out that I lost a good friend the other night.  Apparently he died of a heart attack over night.  He was only 36.   icon_cry

Besides being a friend I had worked very closely with him on 3 different projects over the last several years and he was one of the best people I've worked with.  Really smart and always just the most happy-go-lucky, cheery, and fun to be around guy even in the worst of crunches.  He kept me sane on more than one occasion.

I don't really know what the purpose of this post is, but I guess I'm just trying to process things.  Kind of surreal to lose a friend like that who is a year younger than me.

So this launched today.  Anybody picking it up?

They released this really cool 360 degree launch trailer gameplay footage video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSBWwnOHvM8
I love these sort of interactive trailers for games, as it really gives you a much better idea of what the game looks like in real time.  Be sure to pick a resolution larger than you normally would, otherwise it seems to end up looking like crap (and still never looks greatly detailed).

On the fence about Overwatch. On the one hand, I don't play MP games because they bore me. On the other hand, those animated shorts have been so amazing that I want to buy the game just to show my support even if I never actually play it. What to do.

Bummer you missed the beta.

So far my impressions of Overwatch are that it is cool, but it doesn't feel drastically different from TF2 despite all the characters.  The game is still just team-based grinding in small maps.  It's very polished, and maybe I'll grow to enjoy more depth as I play more characters, but right now I don't really feel like it tempts me to play any more than TF2 which I burned out on years ago.
18  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC/XB1/PS4] Technomancer - action-based RPG on: May 24, 2016, 03:31:37 AM
I've seen a few trailers for The Technomancer recently and it looks like it might be kind of interesting.

It's coming next at the end of June from Focus Home Interactive and developed by Spiders.  Spiders has never had a real hit, but they seem constantly on the verge of doing something cool if they can get enough time to polish a game.  They made Bound By Flame, Mars: War Logs and Of Orcs And Men.

I think The Technomancer is some sort of pseudo sequel to Mars: War Logs since it also takes place on Mars and has a similar style, so hopefully that means they can take a concept they had before and perfect it.  Visually I think it looks quite good for a game from a small non-AAA studio.

I'm playing a lot of Dying Light: The Following and still really enjoying it. It is a very meaty expansion, feels like a full game in it's own right.

I finished up The Following today and it was great.  Almost the perfect length of content for me an open world games so I didn't get totally overwhelmed but could still spend plenty of time playing.  Highly recommended if you enjoyed Dying Light at all (and if you didn't play that, it's also highly recommended).

It was slightly better than the first trailer, but still shows that they have a very different sense and level of humor going here than the original.

Those women can all be funny, but they are not of the dryer humor of Ramis, Murray and Ackroyd.  It's too much of a low brow, broad comedy style to work for me.

Does this have the same awful texture pop that Rage had on PS4?

My friend playing it last night said it was exactly like Rage with those problems.  He's still enjoying it, but said it was quit blurry at times (on PC playing on Ultra).

Didn't see this on the xbone.

For what it's worth, my friend said it was much better after he updated to the latest "game ready" Nvidia drivers which had optimizations for Doom specifically.

Cool, glad to hear you guys are both enjoying it.  I don't need anything amazing if it has fun open world gameplay mixed with good gunplay and stealth.

I often find that I enjoy "mediocre" games more than big budget ones because they just fit my playstyle more.

In response to a question posted yesterday, you are restricted to two weapons, a pistol and a primary gun (or crossbow). But the modular weapon system allows that pistol to be an SMG or a silenced pneumatic gun, and that rifle can be a sniper gun or an assault rifle or even a grenade launcher. Obviously the crossbow isn't going to fulfill the same needs as the rifle, but I've found the crossbow is an excellent choice for the Yellow (stealthy) Zone while the rifle works best in the Red Zone, where no civilians are allowed and it's open combat.

From what I saw in the Giant Bomb Quicklook you can change up your weapons on the run at any time, so you effectively have all the weapons from a sniper rifle to assault rifle to shotgun and grenade launcher all in one at the press of a button/menu.  You just seem to have the two categories of small arms (pistol, smg, etc) and medium (rifles, etc).

There was never a Homefront movie.  You're probably thinking of Red Dawn, which the original Homefront took inspiration from.  Well, there was a recent movie called Homefront, but it was completely unrelated to the games.

Awesome, thanks for the impressions and answers, JZ!

This sounds like it might be right up my alley.  I can spend a ton of time in open world games like Far Cry or Dying Light, so if the mechanics and map are all cool as you say that this might be one I need to pick up when it's on sale.

I have Far Harbor coming via the Fallout 4 Season Pass.

I'm curious to see reviews of Homefront but not willing to jump in sight unseen since it had a rough development and seems to be coming out with little real impressions or marketing (that I have seen).

This is another one like Doom where I'm hoping the single player really comes through as great after not hearing much about it, but I'm not holding out hope.  There were lots of good ideas that fall into the genres I like, but I'll wait for reviews to see how it turns out in the end.

Because warfare sucked back then.  The guns sucked, the variety sucked...everything was primitive trench warfare.
the aviation was amazing

This is true.  Dogfights galore.  But the flying has always been the absolute worst aspect of the Battlefield games in my opinion, so hopefully they rework it entirely.

This is coming out in a couple weeks so they released new trailers for each of the heroes: Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael.

I think I'll probably end up getting this one, as I could go for a good action brawler and I tend to like the Turtles for some reason.  Childhood memories are strong, I guess.
36  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Disney Infinity 3.0 Star Wars on: May 11, 2016, 04:51:23 PM
Well, it looks like the Disney Infinity series is over.  Disney has cancelled the Infinity series and shut down it's game publishing arm and shut down the developers at Avalanche Software.

I had a modicum of hope that they had learned something when they said there would be no new version this holiday season, thinking that they might instead expand on the playset that was out and quit making people buy whole new games.  But I guess they decided to just get out all together.

If you watch sales at all you've no doubt seen Infinity, LEGO Dimensions and the latest Skylanders for 50% or more off for months, so not super surprising to see they aren't selling as well as projected.  Another genre that has been run into the ground.
37  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Fork in the road? on: May 09, 2016, 04:52:19 PM
Yeah, I am kind of along the lines of dfs and farley2k.  There are so many games coming out now, and so many available at low prices, that it's hard to ever get too excited about any one release or focus on it for too long after it comes out.

The noise of the marketing, the internet, constant releases, and frequent sales has made it all just sort of lose the peaks and valleys that made it so exciting many years ago.  It has all become a quagmire of hype that causes me gaming ADD.

Very rarely does a game come out of left field to blow me away.  Not to mention that the "big" games (and even many indies) are mostly iterative these days, so you largely know what to expect when RPG XV or FPS 4: The Repeat come out.

Back when I did play online shooters,  there was a HL2 mod that I really liked that was set in WW1. It had more of a strategic pace to it. Because unlike modern guns, they took time to load and there was a lot more uncertainty in the air. And then there were the charges (grenades) that were unpredictable. But you know what? It was fun.

If you are looking for a more realistic WW1 shooter you should check out Verdun

And I'm not saying that a realistic WW1 shooter can't be fun, but what I'm saying is that it isn't exactly what I've come to want out of a Battlefield game.  But we'll see, I guess.  I just have less and less faith in DICE with every game they released after Bad Company 2.

Yeah, one awesome thing about the Windows 10 Store is that it seems like you can't even select where a game installs.  It's putting this 19GB game on my main OS SSD since that's the C: drive, but that's not where I want any of my games installed. disgust
