Trailer looks great.  smile

For anyone who cares, the Harmontown movie/documentary also went up on Netflix Instant Watch this last weekend.  I thought it was pretty good.

Welcome back!

If you've been gone 4 years, you'll probably find that several people who used to post regularly are now MIA, so maybe everyone you offended has taken off anyway.  slywink

Either way, we could use some "new" blood posting around here!    icon_smile

I read the OO thread on this a while ago and it seemed really interesting, but I was kind of waiting until it had gotten further along.  At this point I'm still interested but I think I'll be waiting until they get a Steam release

I've never played Dwarf Fortress, at least partially because the ASCII graphics were a real turn-off.  These graphics look fine if not remarkable, though, beyond the characters taking directly after Prison Architect.

It's always good to hear that a game still supposedly in "alpha" is really fun to play and has enough systems to keep you addicted like that!  I also look forward to further impressions and hearing how they expand on it.

No, the Rift started as it's own thing.  There were a couple different teams at Valve working on VR and AR, but they laid off the AR team and let some key people from the VR team leave last year (like Michael Abrash who went to work at Oculus).

How much does it cost to play a game?

The Eurogamer article says "at 2 a play for each of the missions, I blasted through a tenner to see the 15 minutes of fun the game offers".  A direct conversion would put that at something near $20 total US, but it may be cheaper in reality.
8  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: What the Hell Color is This Dress? on: February 27, 2015, 09:22:22 PM
To me, this proves the "white gold in true sunlight, bluish and darker brown in shade", but to my buddy who sees it as blue/black he thinks it proves the opposite.

Pug, that test doesn't really make any sense and I hope it's a joke.

Yes, the true chromatic color of the pixel may be light blue, but that says nothing about the true original color of the real article in shaded sunlight.

The argument isn't over the exact pixel color values of the image, it's about the color of the dress in reality.

13  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: What the Hell Color is This Dress? on: February 27, 2015, 04:56:56 PM
Here is the Wired article and frankly I still don't believe their logic or their terrible Photochops.  I don't think you can get a gold color from any black source regardless of the amount of light on it.

And the dress seems very clearly to actually be under an awning (look in the upper right corner), which leads to the white and gold in shadow conclusion.

You can take any section of that original picture away from the background or contrasting color and it still appears the same color (to me).

I'd like to see another image of the actual dress not photoshopped but taken in better light.

I've found that it's frequently not the cashier who holds up the line, it's the customer. Particularly if they're paying with cash or a check. It's like, they know they're going to pay with a check so can't they just open the checkbook while waiting and fill out the stuff they know in advance? Like the date and the store's name? Or, if they know they'll be paying with cash they can at least estimate to to the nearest twenty and get that money ready?

Yeah, this definitely happens as well.  It is probably ageist of me to say it, but it usually seems to be older people that this applies to.  They seem to be the most likely to still use checks and least likely to be aware of their impact on other people.

Certainly not all old people are going to hold up the line, but if you see a little old lady in one line and a single dude in his 30's or 40's in the next, I know which one I'm getting behind.  Which, now that I say it, sounds like something Rittchard would say...   icon_surprised

Yeah, I mean that's their decision.  A lot of people are not comfortable with kids that age playing M-rated games or seeing R-rated movies.  Developing brains and influence and societal norms and all of that.
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Batman: Arkham Knight is rated M on: February 26, 2015, 05:06:48 PM
Yeah, when buying games for myself ratings don't matter at all.

But it has been a big concern when buying them for my nephew who is now 12.  For example, he's been super interested in Halo for a couple years and has lots of toys and talks about it a lot.  I'd love to get him the remastered games to start from square one, but because it's an M-rated shooter series he hasn't actually gotten to play any of them.

And I respect that choice of his parents, and I would probably do the same in their position.  Even though I know there are tons of 10-15 year olds who have been playing Call of Duty and whatever for years.

Hah, then you clearly don't work in any of the grocery stores I use!   icon_evil

I'm really sick of cashiers that don't bag things until they're done ringing things up.  Or that insist on chatting and commenting on the things I'm buying instead of scanning things more quickly.  Or just move like molasses as if there aren't people waiting in line.

And baggers that have no idea how to bag, keeping frozen things together, and fragile/squishy things on top, and not using a ton of bags.

I can (and do) bag all of my things faster than either of the other two actual employees.  The only thing inefficient about self checkout are some idiots that use it and the fact that the employee that's supposed to be over-seeing it is never around or not paying attention to their job.

20  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360,XB1] Forza Horizon 2 on: February 25, 2015, 11:01:13 PM
Apparently there is going to be a Fast & Furious stand alone expansion pack coming out on March 27th.  It will be FREE if you download in the first couple weeks, otherwise it will be $10 if you get it after April 10th, and you don't need Horizon 2 to get it.

As a stand alone I guess it will have it's own set of missions and content, though I'm not sure if that means any F&F characters show up or what.

The cars currently listed to feature in it:
  • 1970 Dodge Charger R/T Fast & Furious Edition
  • 2012 Nissan GT-R Fast & Furious Edition
  • 1998 Toyota Supra Fast & Furious Edition
  • 2014 Maserati Ghibli S Fast & Furious Edition
  • 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Fast & Furious Edition
  • 2015 Dodge Charger R/T Fast & Furious Edition
  • 1970 Plymouth Cuda Fast & Furious Edition
  • 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Fast & Furious Edition

I've tried to watch a few episodes of this but have yet to get interested at all.  I think I have 3 or 4 episodes backed up in my Hulu queue since I never really desire to watch it.

I had no idea this was meant to be a short one-shot series, i assumed it was supposed to be an ongoing 40's version of Agents of Shield meets Mad Men.

Man, I really need to go back to this game.  I'm not sure why I stopped playing, but I don't think I got even half way through.

I do remember that the flying controls for Iron Man were super frustrating and I failed one of those challenges multiple times before quitting, so maybe that was the catalyst.

All the recent talk about retail experiences has me curious how other people prefer their retail checkout experiences to go.  Do you like cashiers that act like they know you?  How about chatty ones that comment on the things you're buying?  Or do you prefer efficiency over all else?

Personally, I just want to pay for my crap and go home.  Do your job and let me get out of here so you can move on to the next person as quickly as possible (which also sped up my time waiting in line to get to that point).

I also really dislike those that feel the need to comment on what I'm buying, like how delicious my food looks or ask where I got it.  I know it looks good, I picked it out and put it in my cart.  We don't know each other, don't pretend like we do.  Also, you work in the damn store I'm buying it from, it's not like I brought in this magical new item from somewhere else.

I always wished that there was a "cashier mood/style" sign above them so you would know what you're getting in for or choose another line.

If you're still interested in RTS games Grey Goo just came out and I've heard it is pretty decent.  It's made by Petroglyph, which is in turn a bunch of ex-Westwood (Command & Conquer) people.

I really like Marvel Heroes 2015.  It's an online action RPG, a lot like a Diablo MMO in the Marvel universe.  It's free to play (and not in the bad way), so you can try out several heroes up to level 10 and then choose one or buy a different one.  Personally I've found it much more fun than Diablo 3.

Grow Home is a great, charming little platformer action game that just came out.  It's only $8 or something and lasts maybe 5 hours.

Payday 2 is a great first person shooter with a cooperative element.  The developers have really supported it well over time and keep releasing new stuff.

If you didn't play Dead Rising 3 on the Xbone, it's also available on PC and is a great open world action game with lots of over-the-top weapons.

I don't think people will be typing much in another 20 years, let alone 50, with the way voice recognition has evolved.

You can't exactly talk to your computer quietly in most office environments, so I doubt voice recognition would replace it there.

Not to mention talking is going to be much slower and less accurate than typing for anything like coding that requires tons of specific syntax and non-English words.

But, having said that, 50 years is a long time for something to completely change the game.

I don't think he should keep any either, but this made me start to wonder about the tax implications of all that money technically going to person A who then gives it to person B as a "gift".  The fund starter will be on record as having earned that $170k, right?  That probably puts a huge tax burden on that person, to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.

No No No. The concerned citizen is not keeping any of the money. All the funds are going to the parents.

So who pays the concerned citizen's $50,000 in taxes come next year?  That's the reality of the situation.

This kind of treatment is exactly why I haven't set foot in a GameStop in years, and why I hope they go out of business.

This annoying crap is purely corporate-led tactics and I really wish somebody would start up a competitor doing the exact opposite, just treating the customers kindly and with respect.  Of course that won't happen with retail in general getting pinched, and gaming moving more and more digital specifically.

This is the part that I think applies most to someone like me.  Everything I've heard and read about this from the start is that it's pretty but just a very limited, linear experience, and I know that's not for me at all.

I don't want to play a bunch of interactive cut scenes, or a ton of quick-time events, regardless of how pretty it is.  I play games mostly for the gameplay, and if that sucks then I don't want to even get close.  I imagine people falling on the other side of that equation and want a "story experience" are ones that rate the game higher.
