1  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: My modem or my ISP? on: Today at 04:38:42 AM
I used to have a similar problem in my last place.  It didn't drop all the time, but frequently enough to be a headache and it dropped wired and wireless connections from the internet at the same time.

My old Netgear router had died so I bought a brand new, fancy, well-reviewed Acer router that I swore could not be the problem and it had to be my internet provider.  But nothing I did could ever get it to work consistently.  At wits end I replaced the router with a new version of my old Netgear router and the problem went away entirely.

I never did really figure out what the problem was, but I guess the thing to learn is don't rule out anything.  If you have a spare (or a store with a liberal return policy) you could try swapping out your modem and/or router and test for a week or two?

Also, it turns out somehow I actually bought 2 keys from GMG several months back.  I though the second key I got today was for the day 1 DLC but nope, I'm just an idiot and ordered it twice.

If anybody wants to buy one of the keys from me for $45 I'd be down for that.  Probably with an Amazon e-gift card, if possible?

Quick note about Green Man Gaming: keys for preorder games are frequently unavailable until midway through release day.  There was also a major issue just last week where Star Wars: Battlefront preorders couldn't be fulfilled until a few days after release.

I personally feel that 23% savings (~$14) is well worth a small delay, but anyone intent on playing Just Cause 3 on release day might want to take Steam up on their current 10% discount.

-Autistic Angel

FWIW, I got my keys from GMG today, several days before the release/download date.

Yeah, I preordered on GMG as well.

Every hint I've heard from the Giant Bomb guys is that it is just as fun as you want it to be.

I really hope I can get more done in Fallout 4 before this comes out!

In case you weren't aware, the Steam fall sale is now going on so it might be a good time to pick up a few of the games on your list for cheap.
10  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Windows 10 and Steam on: November 26, 2015, 04:50:23 AM
I can't say I've had that problem at all.  Are there specific games you remember that were giving you trouble?  Maybe it's only some older ones, or ones that installed saves to a non-"proper" directory for permissions?

I saw that the sales were changing, but what's the story now?

There's no risk buying early anymore, is that the deal?

Yeah, that's my assumption.

Since you can now return games that go on sale for a cheaper price, I'm guessing they didn't want to deal with a ton of returns when a game went on a Flash Sale or something else for a cheaper price than somebody bought it for on the regular sale price.

Now it's one price, no guessing, no returning.  Less excitement for sure, but less hassle as well I guess.

My character found a small patch of sidewalk with an intact hopscotch board.  Really, Bethesda?  Hopscotch paint survived a nuclear holocaust?  Assholes.  Anyway, my character's goal is to complete the hops perfectly 66 times in a row before sunset.  Her record so far is 8 because the jumping controls in this game are so fucking horrendous, she keeps stepping on the lines!  It's like the developers put this in *exclusively* to piss us off!

This game sucks and Todd Howard beats his kids.

16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Need PC recommendations on: November 21, 2015, 12:06:43 AM
If you like action RPG games like Diablo, there are several PC exclusive ones, like The Adventures of Van Helsing, Victor Vran, and Grim Dawn which is in Early Access.  If you want an online action RPG there is Path of Exile and Marvel Heroes, both of which have big audiences (I'm a big fan of Marvel Heroes).

For more traditional MMOs I've heard that Star Wars: The Old Republic is quite good at this point.  Of course WoW is still great, but is quite old so may or may not have aged well in your eyes.

Starcraft 2 is now finished with all 3 games out, if you're looking for a traditional RTS.  If you were ever a fan of Dungeon Keeper you could check out War for the Overworld or Dungeons 2.

Cities: Skylines is a great city builder if you were a SimCity fan in the past.

Not sure if you have any interest in the survival games that have really taken off on PC in the last couple years, but there are plenty of options from ARK to DayZ/Rust/H1Z1.  I'd say that ARK felt like the most complete one to me when I played it and is getting regular updates.
17  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - 11/20/15 Edition on: November 20, 2015, 04:01:10 PM
I'm still playing more Fallout 4.  I'm almost 30 hours in and barely made it to Diamond City so I'm kind of getting overwhelmed with quests at this point.

I've also been firing up The Crew again since the big Wild Run patch and I have to say they have made a really good driving game at this point.  I have it set to Hardcore handling with some personal tweaks and I like the way the cars feel waaaay more than something like the new Need for Speed.  Of course I drive around in a Raid vehicle as much as possible, currently a converted '69 Camaro.   icon_smile

There was also the new patch for Bugbear's Wreckfest, so I'll probably have to put some more time into that.  Lawnmower racing!

I really hope that this means Bugbear is going all-in on the "crazy hometown dirt track weirdness" side of banger racing.  I'd love to see some trailer races and things from Eve of Destruction.

EDIT: Oh, and this big update also includes the first implementation of the career mode, buying and upgrading cars, part degredation, a couple new in-progress tracks and other stuff.

I would say that even on the PC the shooting and combat in general is far below what you would find in an FPS for several reasons.
 1. Shooting when not aiming down sights is wildly inaccurate to the point of being totally random
 2. Even when you do aim down sights the enemies all move so erratically in both movement, speed, turning and animation that lining up a good shot in real time can feel like pure luck
 3. The amount of damage you do also seems random, sometimes a ton of damage sometimes very little
 4. When using VATS the percentages are so crazy low at times that it makes no sense and becomes all but useless
 5. When you are taking damage there is very little (if no) visual indication.  Most games have a flash overlay and direction of damage indicator
 6. When you are low on health there is very little (if no) visual indication.  Most games have several levels of damage indication and/or overlays.

A good FPS is predictable and built for a consistent experience, and this doesn't feel like that to me.  There are probably more things that add up to the combat experience being poor, but those are the ones that come to mind offhand.
23  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: November 18, 2015, 03:59:21 PM
I've never had that blu-ray player issue, and I'd agree it's probably hardware related.

As for the update, I have to say I'm pretty underwhelmed.  I updated as soon as it was available last week and so far I have yet to see anything that really feels improved to me.  Maybe if I was making parties all the time, but I'm not.

Even accessing the Friends list, that was supposed to be so much faster feels really laggy and slow.  Click left, wait a second, did it take?, oh here it goes...  They keep touting how everything is so much faster, but it still feels like the same crappy response to me in general, whether it's Friends list or clicking the Guide button from in a game or movie it's always slow to respond and makes me second guess whether it's actually working.

Well, since the Wild Run edition comes out today they are also patching all of the original games pretty extensively (since everybody is in the same world online).  I put in my original XB1 game and I'm getting a 7.6GB patch.  I'll give some impressions later once it's downloaded and I've had a chance to try it out.

For those who haven't kept up, as far as I know this is what even original game owners get updated:
 - full graphics overhaul
 - new weather system
 - some Wild Run prologue missions introducing new features and vehicles (motorcycles, monster trucks and drifting)
There is also a big handling update that supposedly improves a number of things that I'm excited about:
Improved aerodynamics
Improved steering reactivity.
Improved counter steering.
Improved grip behaviour.
Tuning and increase of the distinctions between the modes: All Driving Help/Sport/Hard-core.

Nothing for me.

Battlefront seems neat, but I don't think it would hold my interest.

I'm curious about The Crew Wild Run, but will wait to see reviews/impressions.

Also curious about WRC 5, but those games haven't really been great in the past and this new developer isn't exactly known for great games.

I think I'm level 9, somewhere around a dozen hours in, and so far this game isn't really grabbing me.  I think at least partially because 90% of my time is just looting, worrying about loot, and emptying my bags.

I don't particularly like the combat, it tends to feel bad whether I'm shooting something in real-time or using the VATS system.  It's like the worst feeling FPS in the world, so any time enemies show up I groan inwardly.

I also don't think that any of the base building stuff is very good, or has much of a point.

Right now I'm just hoping this can entertain me until Just Cause 3 comes out in a couple weeks, but so far it's barely doing the job.

If you're doing the settler stuff, they really needed to create a settler management menu. I think they're relying a bit too much on the mod community for this stuff.

I also just wish they had a decent inventory for viewing and equipping items.  Seeing all arm pieces, for instance.  And better comparison between what's equipped and what's in your inventory.  This just feels like another mess of a UI that ignores how players actually play the game and is begging to be replaced, which is inexcusable for a AAA RPG.

After the terrible disappointment that is the recent release of MX vs ATV: Supercross Encore I decided to reinstall MXGP to give it another try.  I had originally gotten it on sale some months ago but only put in about a half hour because I quickly got frustrated by the controls and my constant crashing at the time.

After going back and giving it another try it all really started to click after about another half hour.  I think the one big thing is that unlike the MX vs ATV games, you often should be leaning in the opposite direction to the direction you're turning.  In MX vs ATV I found I usually leaned the same way as turning to make for tighter turns, whereas here if I lean into a turn (ie: both sticks left or right) I almost always slammed right into the ground.

Anyway, I've still only put a couple hours into it but I'm really digging it now.   I haven't ridden a dirtbike in close to 20 years, but this occasionally reminds me of what fun that was.  There are times when I'm taking turns and give it a lot of gas and the rear end starts to really whip around and it just feels sooooo good!  Very satisfying in a visceral way that most motorcycle games aren't.

The game isn't top-of-the-line as far as looks goes, but when compared against the "new" MX vs ATV it's a damn sight prettier (and faster) than that!

Also, did you not play Galak-Z: The Dimensional? Axiom Verge? Rocket League?

For what it's worth, all of those games are also on PC (Zestiria, Galak-Z, Axiom Verge and Rocket League).
