3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mark McMorris Infinite Air snowboarding [PC/XB1/PS4] on: Today at 02:47:30 AM
For anybody that was interested in a bit more serious and hardcore snowboarding game than Steep, they just put out a big update on all platforms that significantly updates things.

Performance has been improved drastically on the Xbox One, and I'd imagine on the others as well.  Smooth, fast framerate, no hitching...not an issue anymore.

The biggest change, though, is that they have added a lot more control to slowing or speeding up your spins.  Previously you had to perfectly judge your pre-wound torque and then that was kind of it.  That lead to a lot of out of control spins and flips.  Now you get a bit more control over it once you launch.  This is honestly a night-and-day change, and the fact that they were this responsive to player's complaints is a great sign for the future (to me).

They have also replaced all of their tutorials, added several more and overall teach new users and get them ninto the game much better.  There are also some videos you can watch in the game now for additional tips.

I was a little scared to come back to this after having so much fun in Steep, but with this update I think this one can still stand on it's own.  Not graphically (a small indie team will just never compete with Ubisoft's multi-studio empire), but in it's own ways.

EVERYONE who has a PC should try the demo out on Steam if they own a PC, and enjoy games like the old Commandos series. Hell, even if you don't try it out anyway. You may love it, and the demo is free!

Yeah, I'm trying this out and it seems awesome!  I never really played the old Commandos games beyond a demo or two, but this really satisfies my Tenchu ninja stealth assassin itch.

I kind of wish it wasn't $40, but I also feel petty saying that.

$28.74 on GMG.

Damn you!  I can't really afford to get more games right now (or shouldn't), and I already have too many as it is.  But...   icon_neutral

Ok, this is exactly what I was looking for.  Of course I managed to die in the opening scene even with the overpowered weapons they give you, but I guess it took me a bit to get back into the rhythm.

Using the camera for PP as well as investigations?  Nice addition.

Selfies with zombies?  Classic.

Happy, jazzy Christmas music in the pause menus?  Brilliant!

Kinda janky base movement still?  Not great, but I can live with it.

These games are a bit "quirky" but well worth supporting given how long the dev team continues to patch, support and add free content.  They have a second free DLC pack for "The Undead Cometh" that's due anytime now.

I apparently pre-ordered Last Guardian a long while back, so I think it's coming today.  Unfortunately after reading some of the reviews, I wonder if that was a mistake.

What?  The reviews all seem very positive so far.

I've seen several people complain about the dated gameplay mechanics, camera wonkiness, etc including people who still like the game.  And apparently the GT review as well.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XB1/PC] Dead Rising 4 on: December 06, 2016, 08:45:37 PM
And just like that, it's out!!

Anybody else picking this up?  My copy just arrived from Amazon, but waiting on the install.  Despite it saying "Ready to Start" once you launch the game you can't start Story mode until it completes installing.  Aah, modern console gaming...

From the videos and reviews I've seen this looks right up my alley.  Streamline out some of the annoying/frustrating parts and embracing the open world nature of the game.

I know that burns fans of the original two games, but at the time I don't remember many people actually enjoying the time limits, crappy save system or crafting restrictions, and I don't think the game is any worse for not having them.  Losing some character and quirkiness I can understand missing, though.

Also the first movie in the Universal Monster Cinematic Universe.  You know since every other studio has one

Give me the campy version with Brendan Fraiser.

Yeah, honestly that looked like 90% of that could have been from Mission Impossible or any other Tom Cruise stunt movie.  It may be good, but doesn't look too unique.

Also, I can't imagine that they are going to be able to establish a Universal Monsters Universe...not only does nobody remember those movies, having them be supernatural and trying to be taken seriously seems to never really work (unless you want to churn out the same garbage as Underworld, etc).  And then trying to have Tom Cruise be a central star they are going to have the same issue as Robert Downey Jr, where even if it is successful he becomes far too expensive to keep in them.

I really want this to be good.  Anyone played MWO? Curious if they have a good handle on the core combat and not just an arcade approximation of it.

Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

I have played Mechwarrior Online a few times.  To me it definitely seemed to capture the essence of Mechwarrior.  Slow, lumbering mechs loaded with weapons mixed with fast scout mechs, but all of it still way slower than a shooter or arcade style game.  Upgrading weapons, cooling, armor, etc.  Targeting certain mech parts to damage them, all those kinds of systems.

I think their biggest backlash has been due to balancing issues (lasers are OP!  No, now missiles are!), some super expensive specialty mechs (real money), as well as not getting in the clans and full overworld campaign map that was supposed to reflect individual battles taking control of parts of the map.  Neither of those is a huge concern for a single player game that should [hopefully] be built with a campaign in mind.

I'll be picking up Dead Rising 4 for the Xbox One.  I'm wondering if I should have gone PC on that, but I know I enjoyed the last one on Xbone so figured I would go there again.

Very curious about Spacehulk: Deathwing, but I got a refund on my preorder after trying the demo beta out briefly.  Too many games at the moment.

Same with The Last Guardian.  I kind of lost faith in that one living up to modern gaming conventions, but we'll see.

Looks pretty good.

They seem to be really trying to sell the fiction and scale of being a small human in a huge mech, which I think works in it's favor.

I'm a little sketched out because Piranha have had such conflicts over Mechwarrior Online, but I guess at least they know the property and the expectations that come with it.

26  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Steep [XB1/PS4/PC] - Ubisoft open world extreme sports thingy on: December 04, 2016, 05:09:52 PM
I was pretty skeptical about this game since I didn't enjoy the closed alpha that much and the game is trying to split it's attention in so many directions (most of which have little interest for me), but man am I having fun with it!  I played for several hours yesterday.

This is almost the perfect game for me and my style of just casually exploring and carving the mountain.  You just discover new waypoints and races and stuff as you're going down, and then take one of those down and discover more.  It works well after you get out of the beginning stuff.  And these feel like truly huge mountains and you can keep riding and riding for a long time before you hit the end, like a true mountain ride does.

Obviously the controls, tricks, physics and stuff are more arcade-y than something like Infinite Air, but the simple things are very fun despite that.  Carving, flipping, spinning and some grabs.  No rails (which I don't miss at all), and not a huge variety of tricks, but they do a good job of keeping your flow going by not being too hard to land.

The "story" and missions seem to be written by the same drugged out weirdos that do the trippy missions for Far Cry games.  The mountains have voices and talk to you as you ride down them during story missions.  And I had some wackjob call me over the radio to help him take out 10 evil snowmen who were trying to kill him.  But I guess better to have a sense of humor than nothing at all.

The bad so far is that I really don't enjoy the wingsuit or paragliding stuff at all.  Although I have used the parachute to traverse from one peak to another nearby one, which is cool.  They mostly just feel like tacked-on stuff that detracts from what could be a great snowboarding (and skiing) game.

Yeah, I guess I don't see the point in paying for a streaming service that just gives you the same as a basic cable service with no DVR or anything.

I suppose you could watch it on other devices, but I never want to do that with live TV (not that I watch any live TV anymore, I guess).

Yes...?

I was just noting that it was actually cheaper when it was on sale two years ago!   Half this current price, even!  saywhat icon_biggrin
