I wish I had time to play, but I'm busy tomorrow and then leaving on a flight early Sunday and will be gone for a week.  Maybe I'll play a bit of The Crew tonight.

Eh, it was a stupid concept to begin with.  Can you imagine the outrage and anger if some middle eastern country had made a movie all about killing the actual president?  (pretending that they have a Hollywood size industry, stars, budget, marketing, worldwide distribution, etc like Sony and this movie)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_a_President_%282006_film%29

You're right, I guess that movie exists, but I had never heard of it and I bet neither had anyone else here or really most people across the country.  I think that's a little different than a major holiday movie with a couple of big name Hollywood actors from a major international movie studio like Sony and the marketing budget to go along with that.  In comparison there would be no outcry over a movie nobody hears about.

Quote from: Purge on December 19, 2014, 09:22:38 PM

Oh, and if you're into bad ideas, here's a particularly good one:

http://www.techradar.com/us/news/gaming/consoles/why-sony-canceling-the-interview-in-theaters-is-a-huge-win-for-ps4-1277603

If one were to use a Venn diagram to show the actual footprint of people willing to buy a digital movie, on an exclusive console, the overlap is going to be a small subset. Not going to make the 44 million for production costs, or the 30 million in advertising.

Yikes.

I think another thing that article glosses over is that smaller movies frequently release on Xbox video (and probably other streaming services) at the same time they hit theaters or even weeks before.  They act as if Comcast and their $60 Tower Heist debacle is the only time somebody has tried to release a movie to streaming near it's theatrical release date.

I'm 100% with Pug, once I know I'm going to see a movie I try to avoid all trailers and media for it, otherwise I'm just spoiling the joy of discovery when I eventually watch it.

I end up avoiding most of the big movie threads around here after the first page because they quickly devolve into a ton of trailers and screenshots and rumors and things I just don't care to have "ruin" my experience.
10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360,XB1] Forza Horizon 2 on: December 16, 2014, 07:00:27 PM
Apparently the first DLC pack for this, called Storm Island, comes out today.  It's a new island area full of offroad races, 6 new offroad vehicles, more offroad and rally car parts and whatnot.

Here's the trailer for the DLC and IGN has some other videos of it in action with their write up as well.

$20 normally, $10 if you're a Horizon 2 VIP member.

I'll probably pick it up even though I wish they had gone with a different environment type than more of the same.  Maybe an alpine set or something for the  next one to make it really stand out.  Overall I've felt like this open world is less memorable and all too same-y compared to even the first Horizon, but it especially pales compared to something like The Crew.

Yeah, I've been bit by that element of the "free weekend" several times in the past as well.  Very frustrating.  I suppose they do it to drive people to buy for that last day of the weekend, but since I never even get to try it out that backfires for me as it did for you.

I mean, what did you expect it to cost?  They charge that exact same price for every port they've done of other old 2D Final Fantasy games, and this is perhaps the most widely loved and wanted one.  I'm surprised it's not at least $20.

Besides, I guess that's pretty standard downloadable game cost these days if you look at it in the larger picture.

Question - why are 3DS games so expensive? They don't seem to price drop like normal games :-P

I don't know for sure, but I would say 2 factors play into it heavily.  The first being that a lot of them are from Nintendo who rarely drops game prices on any platform.  They have games that came out a couple years ago that are still at full price.

The second being that it's a market largely dominated by a more casual audience, so sales are not nearly as day-one heavy as regular console/PC games.  There isn't nearly as much marketing for DS games, and kids don't necessarily read every article anticipating the next DS game and go out at midnight on launch day to get it.  They have to wait for the holidays or to get some birthday money and buy what looks cool then.  For the hardcore games I'd imagine when companies know that 90% of their full price sales are going to happen in the first month (or week), they're much more likely to discount it sooner to drive secondary sales while there is still some marketing influence.

Day 2 - a bunch of stickers with swear words and things on them

Also, apparently "We’ve hidden a really hard puzzle in this year’s gifts. There’s an enormous prize for the person or group who helps solve it."

Unfortunately the stuff that YK mentioned is still prevalent.  I believe it's an unfortunate byproduct of the way the entire system works.  Programmer costs are constantly rising every year, and they continue to try to gouge more at every opportunity, so as providers, the economic model inherently is built to have costs increase over time.  It's not really that you are paying "more for the same content" over time ...

You can say "that's just how this system works", but to me, the first company that flips this model on it's head is going to be rewarded for it.  If you want to pull out of a steep decline, don't keep doing the same thing.

Another question comes to mind, since we are more of the tech-oriented people here.  Does newer tech like 4K influence you at all?  Would some form of live 4K content (sports, concerts, etc) drive you to an alternate solution?

For me, at this point I couldn't care less about 4K.  I have a big 1080p TV I bought a couple years ago and I'm perfectly happy with it.  None of my consoles or PC can output graphics at 4K, none of my existing media is 4K, and most of the streaming I do can hardly keep up with true 1080 as it is.

Just like 3D, 4K seems like something companies are trying to shove on consumers, not something that consumers are clamoring for.  Maybe in several years when I buy a new TV, but not now.
33  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: TV Viewing and Spending Thresholds Discussion on: December 05, 2014, 06:11:06 AM
I agree, YellowKing, nobody rewards loyalty they only reward new customers and people who scam the system.  It's that sort of  general disregard and mistreatment of customers which partially drove me away from cable.

My general profile:
- mid 30's male making decent money
- cut the cord maybe 4 years ago
- never watch sports
- watch some TV nightly
- use Netflix online and discs
- use Hulu for lots of TV shows
- pay for streaming new seasons of a few choice TV shows (maybe 3-4 per year)

Quote
What are your biggest concerns when it comes to TV viewing?
My concerns and reasons I cut the cord years ago were the monthly cost, troubles with the service, terrible customer service that is antagonistic towards customers and the feeling of general disdain for those who pay money.  I also didn't like supporting a monopolistic company that is consistently rated terrible in so many areas of customer satisfaction and I chose to speak with my wallet.

Of course I also care about other things like quality of service, uninterrupted HD, DVR and/or on-demand watching of shows in a non-live way.  And as others said I don't want to pay for a ton of channels I never use, especially sports, shopping, "news", reality TV and all that garbage.

I also don't own a house, I rent and don't want to put a dish on the exterior (if that's even allowed).  I end up moving every few years for work so anything that's going to be a hassle is out.

Quote
What, if anything, would it take to make you come back to some sort of cable/satellite provider?
Hmm.  Maybe a cheap ala carte option that doesn't try to rape me per channel, doesn't increase dramatically in price over time, and a company that treats customers like they actually value them.  People like buying from giant companies like Amazon because they provide amazing service for the best price available, and if there are problems they make it right quickly and happily.

Quote
Do the new "a la carte" options from HBO, CBS, etc change the outlook on your current setup?

Not really.  HBO is going to be more than I want to pay per month, guaranteed.  If it was less than $10 then maybe, but I'm sure it will be more like $20 to satisfy the cable and satellite companies.  I'm not going to pay CBS for something that they already provide free over the air, and used to provide for free online.  Trying to squeeze money out of me is the quickest way to drive me away.  I also don't really want to end up paying more for a few services run by different companies that all do things in different ways accessible through different means.

When all is said and done, I think no existing company is going to be able to start some new program or ad campaign to make me change tomorrow.  At this point they need to prove themselves over the long term before I'll even bother to consider them.

Not sure if anybody else picked this up (I'm playing on the Xbox One), but if you did and you think the vehicle handling is a bit sluggish and overall crap, I suggest the following:

1. Crank up Steering Sensitivity several notches
2. Crank up Steering Linearity a few notches
3. Turn down Steering Deadzone to nearly nothing
4. Spice to taste

If you're anything like me this makes the vehicles feel MUCH better.  Just so much more responsive and not nearly as much constant over correcting and fish tailing when I just want to turn.

There are also other detailed options that are well worth looking at too.  I also have the overall handling on Sport mode, but even before doing that just the steering changes made a world of difference.

Yeah, that is how the PS+ free games work.  You only have access to them while your membership continues.  This differs from the Xbox Games With Gold thing where you get to keep them.  But I think most people just keep the subscription all the time in either case.
