I have played a ton of Marvel Heroes (now 2016) and it's actually a really great Diablo-like game in an MMO wrapper.  They have done a ton of work on it over the years and are constantly releasing new content and characters every month.  And it's one of the few free-to-play games that I felt was really a great implementation of F2P mechanics.  It never felt like a rip off and I was more than willing to spend money over time because I didn't feel like I was being nickel and dimed.

As you say, there is also Path of Exile, which I haven't played but know some people that got really deep into it.  It's aesthetic is far closer to Diablo than Marvel Heroes, and I think it's skill trees are supposed to be insanely deep.

15 years ago this game would have slotted in perfectly as a $40 B tier title. Heck it's $40 on Steam. That looks like the right price.

However it seems there is a stigma, and a high cost with publishing on a major console platform. A $20 cost, not so sure, but it does seem silly.

I would have been more interested in jumping in early if it was $40 or even $50 off the bat, I mean Spiders is known for solid games wrapped in a janky design decisions.

I just have to wonder sometimes if publishers have really done the market research on pricing, launch dates etc. I want to say they have, but knowing all the marketing departments I've dealt with I am not too sure.

Yeah, it seems to fit perfectly in that $40 tier which is why I bought it for $38 on Steam.  I want to support these guys making their ambitious and slightly weird games at a lower budget.

I'm sure the publisher and marketing divisions are perfectly aware of all of those factors.  Release date for a product of this size probably has more to do with budget and time than anything.    They need to plan those things out like 6 months in advance for all the marketing and retailer agreements to line up.

My guess on the console release being full price is that first off it's a $15 difference between the post-launch PC price and the console price.  Secondly, they have a different publisher involved for the console release so that is another cut being taken off the top in addition to the console fees.  And of course then there is the stigma of being a lower priced retail game on consoles these days and they probably figure that releasing at a lower price like $50 doesn't get them any more initial sales and only saddles them with less income and then people will be more excited when/if it does drop in price.

Oh, as for me I'm getting The Technomancer.  It may be janky, but I want to support Spiders to keep them developing their weird shit.

And I have The Division DLC coming from my idiotic purchasing of the season pass.

Also interested to hear how BoxBoxBoy, God Eater and Inside turn out.

Well, I'm sure I will be playing more Dirty Bomb.  And I'd like to try to get further into Bound by Flame, but I also picked up like 10 new cheap titles on the Steam sale so I'm sure I will be bouncing around just trying out new things like an idiot.   icon_biggrin

Yep, I played several rounds of Dirty Bomb and a few more hours of Bound By Flame.  BBF is really cool, but man is it tough.  I think I need to change the difficulty to wuss mode just to get past the normal enemies.

I also tried out a few cheap games that I got in the Steam sale:
Epsilon - I bought this to support the small developer to hopefully get another tactical shooter made, but it feels like they still don't even have a lot of basic mechanics down and with the lack of actual content and so little coming in updates I went for a refund.
Orion - Yeah, a new game from the dino jetpack people for 50 cents.  And it was really nothing like the videos so another loser.
Mushroom 11 - A fun puzzle game with some action-y platformer elements but a totally unique mechanic for it.  Not on a big sale, but worth it.
Critical Annihilation - Twin stick shooter with voxel graphics so everything explodes.  Not very deep since it is just wave-based destruction at this point, but fun.
Wreckfest - Not a new game, but they finally put out a new track.  Seems decent but I have lost all hope for this to ever get finished since Bugbear seems to be abandoning it.

I saw this over on Kotaku, apparently Ebay is having a one day flash sale where if you spent $75 on stuff, use Paypal to buy it and use their code CSUMMERFUN2016.  That includes gift cards for stores or gaming stuff like Xbox, PSN and Steam.

I was not able to get it to work properly with Steam gift cards, though you may be able to do it if you just buy the $100 one instead.  I just got 3 $25 Xbox cards and called it good.

Steam has this and the latest tomb raider game for sale (summer sale) for $51.  I'm tempted, but I keep hearing performance issues for PC.  Has it got better?  I know the story is pretty much absent, and that's fine, but how is it now?

To some extent it has been addressed, but definitely not "fixed".  I think how much it affects your playing will be dependent on your system and how much you care about a steady framerate.

I just tried again and with about medium settings at 1920x1200 I was getting 45-51 fps most of the time, but there were still random times where it dropped below 30 fps or even into the teens for a couple seconds.  Those times usually seem to involve vehicles or something but are totally unpredictable from what I can tell (it's not like it's just explosions, or just vehicles, or whatever).

For reference, my system is getting a little older but was decent: i7-4770K @ 3.5GHz, 8GB RAM, GTX 760 w/ 2GB VRAM and the game installed on my secondary SSD.

Even with the original performance updates a couple months ago I put in over 30 hours into the game, so that didn't prevent me from playing and enjoying the game.

They have released a 22 minute gameplay trailer for E3.

Skip to about 1:20 if you want to avoid seeing the intro cinematic.  And skip to about 3:00 if you just want to see gameplay and not more story stuff, though don't expect to avoid it all.

That is a great "Titanfall 2 Official Multiplayer Gameplay Trailer" and I am excited about the game but New Orleans looks different than I expected.

Oops, link fixed.

The cars look to be ripoffs of a Firebird/Camaro, Corvette Stingray and Mustang Fastback.
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC,XB1,PS4] MXGP 2 - The Official Motocross Videogame on: June 22, 2016, 09:30:34 PM
I got this game for the Xbox One and have played a few races now.

I have played enough to remember how terrible I was at the beginning of playing the first MXGP.  But I think I'm actually even worse in this one.  I have yet to actually finish above last place in any race I have done against the normal AI.   crybaby  retard

The graphics are decent on the console, but not amazing.  I think it could at least use some extra anti-aliasing and other post processing to clean it up.  I don't know what the framerate is, but I don't notice any problems.  The loading times, however, seem very long at nearly a minute for any track.

One really cool touch is that you can actually remap all of the controls!  In a console game!  But I still think their rider/bike controls are reversed from what I naturally want to do half the time.
17  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Steam Deals Thread: Daily, Weekly, Midweek, Weekend and all other sales! on: June 22, 2016, 08:06:23 PM
There is also a big sale on Payday 2 stuff right now, most everything but the newest DLC is 75% off.  And free to try until the 4th of July.  I'm assuming this is to get back in the communities good graces after the fuckup of their publisher going all microtrans on the game.

But why pull the demo after a week? They put the effort into making it. Why not leave it available for people who might not have had the time to try the game during E3?
Oh, I don't know and won't pretend to understand the logic there.  It is only a level and would have got me to purchase the game (but I am the target audience and was going to regardless) so I don't see the harm.  My guess is they were hoping by making it limited it would create a buzz and encourage people to "buy today because I cannot sell you tomorrow" sort of logic.

Yeah, I'm guessing something along those lines.  It certainly made me take attention of the demo and be sure to play it last week.

Not to mention that back in the days of the original Doom many of us likely just played the shareware version over and over rather than purchasing the full thing.  I don't think that would happen with this short demo, but could have been on their minds.

I'm curious about Mighty No. 9, but I don't know if I'm curious enough to buy it.  If the reviews are stellar, that could change.

And stellar they are not.  Sheesh.  Reviews are hovering in the 50% range.

Wow.  That is both amazing and shocking given how anticipated this game has been.  Graphics that are retro, but not up to the last game in the MM series, and worst of all, a gameplay mechanic that is both imprecise and used to justify some tricky jumps.

I find it odd that there are so many complaints about the graphics and art style.  I thought they looked pretty good from the videos I've seen; exactly what I would expect.
I think they are pretty terrible. Also consider this was the concept art in the kickstarter which was much better.

Yeah, that image certainly has a charm about it, but obviously it's just concept art and shouldn't be taken 100% literally since it is a 2D drawing.  But when comparing to some actual screens from the game I don't think it's that different considering we knew they were going for 3D characters and stuff.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's top tier or amazing or the best they could have done or anything, I just don't think it's terrible.

They have finally put out a new big update, but only in the beta branch.  It seems like they had to get it out for E3 since they have a pretty big presence there.  This new update has a first person camera, new vehicle controls, grapple gun, graphics updates, and the first implementation of online multiplayer finally!

Here is the E3 trailer they released to show off the multiplayer, grappling gun, paint gun, etc.
28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: June 15, 2016, 04:47:18 PM
Well, if you are constantly waiting for the "next big thing" then you miss out on another 18 months of awesome games you could be playing right now.  And then you'll say "I should wait until the Scorpio model is even cheaper..." and it never ends.

As for getting an S vs a fatty, my opinion is that unless you already have a 4k TV or will for sure be buying a new TV in the next year or two, you're probably just best off to get a cheaper Xbox One today and playing some games now.  As of a couple hours ago the 1TB Halo 5 bundle was the cheapest one on Amazon right now, but now they've jacked the price up so it must be running out of stock.

It may have been well known already, but I saw at the Ubisoft E3 press conference that their next DLC is releasing in a couple weeks and will bring with it randomly generated underground dungeons!  That's the kind of repeatable content that a loot game like this really needed as far as I'm concerned.  I don't want grinding uber-hard raids or whatever, I want to do fresh random content forever!

I was already an idiot and bought the season pass after playing the beta, so I guess this might be the thing that gets me to actually play the game for a while.

From what Giant Bomb was saying, even the S console is going to be a slight upgrade from the standard Xbox One so it will play games like Gears 4 a bit more smoothly and at higher resolution most of the time (since they use adaptive resolution to fix framerate like the newer Halo games).  It will be interesting to see how much of a difference that ends up being.
