XBL Deals for Gold has a huge list of games.

Here's a link:
2  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: New Ghostbusters Movie in the Works on: Today at 01:05:20 AM
I expected Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig.  I'm not familiar with the other two but I guess they're on "newer" SNL which I very rarely watch.

I would have loved to see Rashida Jones be in it.  She's both really attractive and very funny.  And willing to make a fool of herself.

I wish they would just stop trying to make Fantastic Four cool and relevant. Even as a kid I remember thinking they were the lamest superhero team.

Yeah, for whatever reason I've never bought them as "cool".

I do like most of the cast though, so at least that's a plus.  Of course you're never gonna beat Chris Evans as Johnny Storm but whatever, I guess he's moved on  Tongue

I really don't like that Miles Teller kid.  For whatever reason he really grates on me.  Kind of like a young Shia Labeouf.

I guess overall impression is: "Meh.  Is this the one where Marvel over-extends themselves?"

Hooray for Farley single-handedly keeping this thread alive.   icon_smile  (I particularly enjoyed the "watercolors with real thing" run)

I had originally planned to pick up Grim Fandango, but to do so would be to break my "no new games" rule, so I'm going to pass. I'm sure it will be available on the cheap later this year.

Well, technically it's a 16 year old game, so it's not "new".  slywink

I will continue jamming away at Rocksmith 2014, doing my lessons and digging into some of that DLC that I "just had to have" right away.  smile

And maybe I'll finally finish Far Cry 4 as well.  I haven't played in a couple weeks, I know I'm pretty close if I can ignore the side content and I'd really like to get that off my mind.

Oh, but I also bought Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell!  I guess I need to play that first, heh.

Well, I did play Rocksmith 2014, but I ignored the rest and spent my other gaming time in the Marvel Heroes Cowtastrophe.  So it goes.   icon_smile

I'm sure I'll get Grim Fandango: Remastered at some point, but for whatever reason I'm not nearly as excited about it as I imagined I would be.
8  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Amazon Prime save $27 one-day sale (new members only) on: January 24, 2015, 07:22:54 PM
There is a one-day sale going on for a year of Amazon Prime for $72 (usually $99 these days), but unfortunately it only seems to work for new members.

Good deal for those people, sucks for me since my Prime is up in a month but it won't allow me to buy.
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Kickstarter] The Long Dark - FP Survival on: January 24, 2015, 06:01:05 PM
I'm interested in this game, in the fact that it's a non-zombie survival game.  And I like the setting.

But everything I've heard is that it's still too early to really be worth it, so I'm waiting.  No need for me to burn out on an early version of the game when there are plenty other things to play right now.

This is now available on Netflix streaming.

  • Distance

13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Windows 10 - Xbox One features on: January 22, 2015, 07:35:04 PM
I imagine it would also simplify a whole lot of their support structure for older OSes if they can get the vast majority of people to move on to Windows 10.  Less people using 6 year old software and less reason to use it means they can focus on the current version with more people (patching, updating, drivers, tech support, phone support, etc etc).

Am I reading right that everyone using Windows 7 or 8 gets Windows 10 free??

That's what they said.  Free upgrades if you do it in the first year, and it's a real license that lasts not a limited thing.  That is actually super cool...I can upgrade all of my parents' PCs without any hassle (other than dealing with old people, heh).

Kingsman - really looking forward to this one, young Brit super agents led by Colin Firth, yum!

Hmm, I hadn't heard of this one but the trailer makes it look pretty interesting.

Jupiter Ascending - previews also look sweet

I still maintain that this is going to be bad.  Tongue

Overall, I look forward to watching these on Netflix or streaming in a few months.  Some interesting things, but not enough to get me to the theater (though that takes me more than most).

I have looked a few articles and I not finding out the answers to a few questions.

1. will I have to own an Xbox One to use this, or just own the game?
2. will my "streamed" game us the keyboard/mouse or will I need an Xbox controller?

I haven't seen any details on those questions either, but I'd assume the answer to both is "yes".

If it's streaming, you'd need to be streaming from something hence needing to own an Xbox One.  I'd love to play XB1 games natively on PC, but I don't think that's happening and this is their way of working around the hardware and performance nightmare that would be.

If you're playing Xbox One games, they'll probably only support controllers, though time will tell if that means only an Xbox One controller or any that support the same inputs.

I'd take Microsoft's words about gaming on PC with a HUGE truckload of salt. They have a notorious reputation for not keeping what they promise, and every single time they come out with a new OS, they keep saying the same "we're dedicated to gaming on Windows", and they never deliver in the slightest.

Expect nothing, and at least you are less likely to be disappointed, though with Microsoft you never know. From what I hear, Windows will now become a service, just what we've all been asking for. Right?

So did you actually read what I wrote, or did you just paste what you wrote last time?  Tongue  I agree that their general "commitment to PC gaming" has always been bullshit, but these are concrete features that they're announcing.  You may or may not be interested in those features, but it's not a vague promise.  Let's just hope that Phil Spencer stays in power there for a while, as he'll make sure PC gaming (and gaming in general) stays a focus.

Quote from: Soulchilde on January 21, 2015, 07:06:02 PM

If this is anything like Steam stream then I'm not interested as I'll just play on my TV

Hard to know at this point, but I'd assume pretty similar to Steam streaming.  The one potentially nicer thing is that you know it should only require a controller as input, you wouldn't have to worry about mouse and keyboard like you do when streaming Steam to another platform.
19  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Windows 10 - Xbox One features on: January 21, 2015, 06:48:13 PM
So there's big Windows 10 announcements today.

The first one I saw was that you'll be able to stream any Xbox One game to any PC or Tablet running Windows 10.

You'll also get an Xbox App with things like the Activity feed, Friends list, and Messages and that whatever.  And you can use it to communicate directly from a PC to a player on their console.

My only other complaint is in some of the takes a long time to restart each mission AND I wish you could control the progression/speed a little more.  It goes from easy to insane in such a short amount of time....and then you have to wait through the restart sequence.  Some wasted time there.

Yeah, I totally agree.  I actually wish they would allow a "no fail" or "x Lives" option in the minigames.  Especially when I'm first trying a new one I fail pretty quickly.  And waiting for all the scores and then launching it again takes too much time, I'd rather just keep going or instantly restart.

I'll have to check out  I've watched a few YouTube videos to help with some other basic techniques, so I'm sure there are other things I've missed as well.  I found this video covered a lot of the things Rocksmith apparently missed, even though it was made for the first one and not 2014.

It's kind of baffling that they have videos for "How to hold a pick" and "How to put on a strap" but they don't explain the proper way to hold your hand on the frets, to use all fingers or that the lighted "highway" shows you where your four fingers should go.

I guess I'm replying to myself once again.  There is a New "Start Your Engines" trailer preparing for launch.

I think they are getting ready to submit final builds for certification, so they should be hitting their March date.  Two months to go.  I'm really interested to see how this does on the market, it should be a mostly quiet time except for GTA V on PC.

I'm not sure I'd say best trailer ever, but it was pretty good.  I could have done without the "scooping up the brains" bit.  And I would have liked to see some direct footage rather than all processed over-the-shoulder stuff.

I do love that their website is straight out of Geocities '96 as well, though:

25  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rocksmith 2014 Preview on: January 18, 2015, 01:15:34 AM
Thanks for the input, Travis!  I was well aware that some guitars start around $100 and go way up into the thousands.  I had asked a friend if I could borrow his guitar but got the old "well, I'll have to talk to my wife..." delay so I just figured I'd get my own.

I ordered the game from Amazon earlier this week and did eventually end up picking up a guitar today after looking around online at different "starter" guitars and read lots of reviews and such.  I stopped in at the local Guitar Center and saw that they had the same Les Paul Player Pack that you could also get packaged with Rocksmith 2014 for $40 off at a total of $159 if I was willing to get the black one instead of Sunburst.  Fine by me!  Since I had already bought Rocksmith 2014 through Amazon for $13 off my whole "bundle" still ended up saving me like $43 over the actual bundle.

I played for about 3 hours today, and experienced everything from absolute joy to utter frustration, so overall better than I expected.  slywink  I tried out some of the learning tutorials, the guitarcade mingames and a few songs as well.  I can see lots of good options there, for sure!  Most of all, though, my fingers are really hurting!  I need to build up some calluses for real.

I'm not totally sold on how they use the dynamic difficulty, but I'll keep trying.  It seems like it goes from too easy of just giving me really boring single notes on one string several seconds apart for a long time and then out of nowhere it starts throwing in multiple finger chords and it  really throws me for a loop.  In an ideal world, I'd love if there were Kinect voice controls for "slow down" or "easier/harder" so I could grapple with those changes for a bit and then speed it back up once I figured it out.  That would make things sooooo much better!  I don't want to have to go to a separate Riff Repeater mode to just do certain sections, I want to keep playing the song but let me control some of the difficulty.

Anyway, I already spent money on some DLC packs because I'm an idiot.  Let's see if I can keep up the practice for a decent period of time.  I know they have a 60-day challenge to play at least 1 hour a day, but that may be hard on some of the nights I get home from a stressful day of work.

I wouldn't call it "hiding" those games from your wife, I'd say it's more selecting your audience.

Would you watch The Expendables or Game of Thrones with your wife?  Or would you more likely wait for a night/weekend she's not around and watch it then?

One a year? Seriously, Turn 10 needs to put more time into making a game that steps things up significantly. It's not like there is another racing game (on the MSFT platform) that even comes close.

It's been 2 years since Forza 5, or will be assuming they ship this fall/holiday.  Horizon 2 was made by Playground Games in the UK, not Turn 10 (though I'm sure there was some assistance, etc).

I'm fine with having the two franchises alternate every couple years, they are different enough that having one racing game a year isn't that big of a deal.

That's not to say I'm as excited about a Forza 6 as I might be a new Rallisport Challenge, but that's a whole different matter.  slywink

So...a year and a half later, did many people pick this up?  Anybody end up using it much?  Did any of you start learning guitar from scratch and actually pick things up after a while?

For some reason I've been getting the itch to pick this game/tool up but I'm not sure if it's worthwhile for a total newb.

I'm sort of in the same boat that Gratch was: I've never played guitar and I don't own a guitar.  I don't even know how to pick out a decent one.  I'd rather buy a cheap one until I got to the point of knowing what I was doing, assuming I got that far before giving up.  But, I've heard that going too cheap can leave you regretting it as well since you'll have to re-tune the guitar after every song.

Any long time verdicts?  I was first considering one of the next-gen versions due to the free $30 Hendrix DLC pack, but some people are recommending PC instead.

I had a Samsung/Google Nexus S phone that was the very first curved phone a few years ago.  After being taken apart by tech sites it was apparently just curved glass and not curved screen, but same idea.

It was actually a nice little curve that made the phone fit on your face slightly more comfortably than a square brick.  You know, for when you use it as a phone.  Subtle, but it was nice.  But certainly not a feature I even considered when buying that phone, or one I'd care about now.

I think a computer monitor might be cool since viewing angles aren't usually an issue. Still I am not sure if there is a really a point. Like YK said, it seems they are just doing it because they can. All these manufacturers are desperately looking for anything to stand out, and this is their latest attempt.

Yeah, I think a computer might be the best place for a curved display.  You're generally only using it with one person and they sit in pretty much the same place all the time, so you don't have the off-angle problems of curved TVs.

Also, did you see this video from Vizio?  I laughed.  smile

40  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Far Cry 3 vs Far Cry 4 on: January 06, 2015, 06:54:56 PM
Yeah, I have to agree that I also enjoyed Far Cry 3 more than 4 (despite it's terrible characters).  I can't pin it down to one specific thing, but I think there are a lot of little things that just add up to hold my interest less.

First off, I think the island in FC3 was easier and more fun to explore.  There were fewer times I had to walk a long way around a mountain or cliff or accidentally fell to my death or whatever; it just generally didn't impede my progress as much.

And I think the animals have been cranked up way too much in FC4.  I have been constantly annoyed by being attacked by a pack of dogs, or had an eagle attack as I'm trying to be stealthy, or a rhino insta-kill me when I hadn't even provoked it.  None of that is fun.

They over use the drug scenes and alternate reality BS: Yogi missions, Shangrila missions, getting drugged by that lady missions....ugh.  I get it.  That was fresh and new back when Max Payne did it 15 years ago, now not so much, especially when it happens every couple hours.

And there are other minor quibbles.  The mouse aiming just feels slightly off.  And issues with the mouse when I had a 360 gamepad plugged in.  And missions that wouldn't complete if you use syringes.  And I've died using the dumb wingsuit too many times to remember.  Frequently I didn't even mean to use it but I just sprint-jumped over a rock or something and it engaged and then I died when I hit a tree 3 feet later.  Great, that's a lot of fun.

It all just adds up to a good game that just keep driving me away.  I want to finish it, but it has been dragging out for weeks now and I'm losing enthusiasm.  I don't remember feeling that way with Far Cry 3 at all, even when I was rolling my eyes at the bad story and characters.
