Keep in mind that this data was from May 2013, after about 6 months of it being on the market.

I'd like to know how the drivetards work.

I found myself racing metallicorphan this morning, which was a little disheartening.

I assumed it would only use Drivatars for people who had played Horizon 2, but if MO is in there it must be using those from Forza 5 as well.

That's what I was guessing, too. It was pretty jarring, though.

It seems like the easiest way to tell somebody that is actually playing is to look at their level when driving in the open world.  If they're only a level 1 car then it's probably just a "fake" player and not somebody actively playing Horizon 2.
3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Windows 10 announced on: Today at 01:09:46 AM
I wasn't really sure what forum was best for this (Off Topic?  Hardware/Software? Gaming?) so I figured I'd just put it in here since our caring about Windows is mostly about PC gaming.  Mods can feel free to move it as usual.

Anyway, in case you didn't see the news on all the tech sites today, Windows 10 was announced and shown off today for the first time and it's coming in late 2015.

No, you're not going crazy.  You didn't miss Windows 9, they skipped it.  The explanation given in this big announcement/demo video has some garbage about it being "such a big step forward" and all that, but clearly that's all just marketing bullshit.

The big features here really seem to be that there are no big features.  Start menu?  It's back.  Normal desktop?  It's back.  Live tiles?  Visible in the Start menu.  Windows Store "apps"?  Can now run in a window like any sane person would want.  These are all really good things, but this is basically just what Windows 8 should have been for desktop users from the start.

The feature of setting up multiple desktops might be cool.

I know my sister uses a Roomba at least partially because of the hair from their 3 cats.  She says it works well for removing daily buildup as long as you empty it after every trip.  It's basically like vacuuming/sweeping every day, just less hassle, heh.

As for you ATB, that you claim not to be able to tell the difference between 60 fps and 30 fps tells me that you haven't actually played many 60 fps games. The difference is huge, though I have no problem playing games at 30 fps personally. For an example of of what kind of difference it makes, just look at The Last of Us. Most people found the PS4 version to be easier than the PS3 version (me included), and that's because of only two things: The improved controller and the improved framerate. It's not just a visual thing. A higher framerate also improves control latency, which means you can react quicker and make finer, more precise adjustments to your aim.

You tell me: I have recently played destiny, BF4 on XB1, Gears of War 3, COD Ghosts, Tombraider reboot whatever it's called, Dishonored, Guacamelee STCE,  Kinect Sports Rivals.

Forza 5 is 1080p/60fps, did you try that?

And Forza Horizon 2 is 1080p/30fps to no real detriment.

It's in my Hulu queue, but I haven't watched it yet.  I have the same concern of longevity given there is only so much "hey look, this kid has the same name as an eventual enemy of Batman" before that gets old.  And I don't need another pure police procedural either.

Yeah, I think I'd like to see that as well.  It made sense to be separate at the time, but the traffic there is just not crazy enough to need it's own paddock anymore.  As you say, now it's the opposite and topics there often get overlooked.

Time will tell, but I would guess that the performance and visual problem is probably less drastic than GAF would be making it out to be.  As with most games these days, whatever platform you play it on you'll probably have a good experience since you're not actively comparing it to something else at that time.

Where does everyone stand on the VIP/Ultimate editions of this?

Everything I've heard about Horizon 2 suggests that there is no grind and they go out of their way to give you in-game money and chances to get free cars.  I think they learned that from hard feedback and backlash on Forza 5 (which they did patch to improve).

If you're not a hardcore car fan the car packs are generally not all that worthwhile unless you really want some specific cars.  I never bought any car packs for Forza 5 and was plenty happy with the ones it shipped with.  There are more than 200 here, so should be plenty variety of the "big" ones.

Having said that, I also had the VIP for Forza 5 (bought a Limited Edition on the cheap several months after launch) so I decided to just do the $10 upgrade to VIP for Horizon 2 as well.  I'm a sucker for a deal I guess...
12  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: So...those 900 series graphics cards on: September 26, 2014, 10:45:26 PM
If you already have a 780 you're probably good for a while.  I'd imagine in another year or so you could upgrade to a mid-range card (usually Nvidia's X60 range) and stick with that for several years because of the console limitations.

It feels like these 900 series cards came on fast because they did basically bypass the 800's.  I'm not sure why they skipped the 800 generation outside of mobile chips, but it's kind of weird.  Maybe it is just to make people feel like they need to upgrade, heh.  Or maybe it was so there was less direct comparison between mobile and desktop chipsets, but even that is odd.

But yeah, Nvidia will keep releasing new ones every year because that's the business they're in.  smile

I think I'll need to make a trip to the hobby shop this weekend or something to pick up some paints and other gear, it's been several years since I painted minis, but I think that could be a fun thing to get back into.  At least in this limited aspect, heh.

Come join us in the miniatures painting thread at OO for some guidance, if you want to. Unless you're already there, because I can't recall everyone who's participated in that thread. Tongue

Cool, I'm checking that out now.  I'm not sure I'll be confident enough to post any pictures of my horrible painting, but it's nice to have some inspiration and see other people going through the same re-learning process.  smile

20  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes on: September 24, 2014, 07:31:53 PM
Yeah, it seems the heroes are really gimped at the beginning so that you can unlock all of the skills to make them actually fun.   icon_confused

From the start, some of the heroes are just plain annoying to use with really long animations and like 2 seconds between attacks in a combo.  Overall their animations and combat timing is just really unresponsive, but things seem to be improving as I upgrade.  I got the combo pack from Amazon with the starter kit, Spider-man set, Venom, Thor and Rocket Raccoon.  I tried all of them out but about half the characters were totally un-fun.

I am enjoying playing as Spider-man and Iron Man for the most part, though.  I'll probably stick with the Spider-man version of New York (ugh, how similar are these two cities using the exact same buildings?) since I want to play as Hulk whenever they deem him available for non-collector's edition sales.

Some choice quotes from their Reddit AMA that gives a little more insight and makes it seem more like Clash of Clans or Mafia Wars or something:

Quote
Have you guys been working on Sleeping Dogs 2, or has your focus been completely on Triad Wars?
Right now we are totally focused on making Triad Wars as awesome as it could be - but would love to continue making games in the Sleeping Dogs universe.

Quote
What is Triad Wars going to be exactly? I understand that it utilizes the combat from Sleeping Dogs but what is the main gameplay hook?
All the great action mechanics from Sleeping Dogs is at the heart of Triad Wars but we've expanded on that with strategy based empire building components. Which really changes it up.

Quote
Will there be any direct PvP in the game? If so, will it be mandatory or optional? Additionally, what sort of cooperative content will be available for people that want to play together?
You'll be playing against real players online asynchronously

Quote
Hi UFG. I love Sleeping Dogs and am a big fan. However, I'm concerned about the Triad Wars being strictly an online game (like GTA online). Is it true the game will be like that? Or will there be a story line a la Wei Shen?
Triad Wars is more about the story you create for your character within the universe of Sleeping Dogs than a single persons story
24  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Blizzard's Next MMO: Titan on: September 23, 2014, 07:38:43 PM
I don't know, it sounds like less of a pure business case like that and more of a "what does the next level of MMO even mean at this point? do we want to spend the next 5 years even trying to do that?  how far would the market change in that time? how many other games could we make in that time instead?" conundrum.

I'm sure there are plenty of lessons they've learned in the many years of trying to build Titan, but whether the people who learned those lessons are still around for the next game(s) might be another matter.

This comes out today, and it sounded like there may be several people taking the plunge, so I figured I'd start a thread for impressions and such.

So far reviews seem to be mixed, some saying it's a big improvement over the first Infinity, some saying it loses good elements from that.
27  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Triad Wars, set in the Sleeping Dogs universe on: September 23, 2014, 05:41:00 AM
Yep, sounds like it's true.

They launched this explanatory trailer thing tonight and it seems to be some sort of combination of Sleeping Dogs, GTA Online, APB Reloaded and Mafia Wars or something.  I'm still not exactly clear.  I'll try to give it a shot, but I would have much rather preferred they had made another single player game like Sleeping Dogs.

Looks like the Steam Store page just got another major overhaul today: http://store.steampowered.com/about/newstore.  It now has some sort of personalized "Discovery Queue", customizable views, content curators and an unending scrolling list of recommendations if you keep scrolling down.

The Discovery Queue seems very much like the Greenlight queue system in that you have a limited number of items each day to "rate" your interest in, or you can generate a new one once it's finished.

Folks interested in Disney Infinity 2.0 might want to read through the reviews first.  Some have been positive, but GameSpot, IGN, and Game Informer were all pretty cool on it.

Quote from: Game Informer
Disney Infinity’s leap into the Marvel universe is bafflingly bad – a gut-punch of a sequel stripped of most of the magic, wonder, and imagination that made the play sets from the first Infinity game enjoyable for children and adults alike. The adventures offered for The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider-Man rank among the worst super hero games of recent memory, pushing players to complete mundane tasks like “fetch a battery” or “activate this device” over and over again.

By contrast, the GI gave the first game a 9/10.

-Autistic Angel

That's a real shame if they didn't end up improving on the first one or even did worse.  There were definitely some annoyances and issues with Infinity 1, but with The Incredibles they already had a basic setup for super hero action in a city.  All they needed to do was iterate and improve on that for the last year, but it sounds like they've even removed some things that worked.   icon_confused

35  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Spacebase DF-9 on: September 21, 2014, 05:33:57 PM
Well, they're not releasing the entire source code to make the game free for everybody, they're releasing the Lua scripts.  That could definitely let the community develop it to a decent point of depth, though.

Quote from: Lordnine on September 21, 2014, 03:53:41 AM

I’m reserving judgment.  Almost all games are forced to cut out features before launch.  Early access just gives people a backdoor look into the process.

I'm well aware of this, but I think a lot of the backlash here is that they had a giant roadmap of features on their website that people were expecting to continue to be worked on and then with this announcement it just disappeared.

Also, going from something you're still publicly calling Alpha to a final version in less than a month seems disingenuous.  I'm sure they've known for months that this had to wind down, but they just needed to better communicate it earlier.  I'm guessing they didn't because they knew there would be backlash.
36  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Spacebase DF-9 on: September 21, 2014, 03:27:21 AM
Well, I think I'm glad I never jumped in on this one after all.  After Alpha 6 Double Fine has announced they're just going to ship the 1.0 version and stop development, cutting off the massive feature list they still had on their website.

For people like me who were interested in this game but waiting for the real meat to get implemented, they have also now cut off that potential income with a rushed launch that doesn't live up to potential.

I can certainly understand the realities of not having enough money to make a case for continued development, but the way they went about just announcing this out of the blue makes them look quite bad.  I think this is just another in a series of moves from Double Fine that has people questioning their loyalty to a company that is no longer delivering the quality they expect.

Is there any hope of this being a fun stealth game for somebody like me who reeeeeeeeeeeeally couldn't give a shit about the story and cutscenes in an MGS game?  (and in fact finds those elements to be a huge turn off)

I don't particularly like the aesthetics of the Shadowrun forums you linked, at least partially because seeing where one post stops and another starts seems to all blend together with lines/borders and often times the header for a post is as large or larger than the text the person wrote.

I'm also not exactly clear how those forums merge in with what would be typical news or feature posts on the GT front page.

As for combining the forum and the comments, I think that could be a double edged sword depending on implementation.  Anything that requires linking to a Facebook or G+ or such account will be an absolute non-starter for me.  But I am definitely all for allowing unified forum logins for front-page comments, though.

As mentioned above, features like in-line video might be nice to have.

I think it's a love/hate feature, but I'd really welcome some of those of agree/like buttons to react to posts. In some of our quieter threads where people are reading but don't have anything to contribute, it would be nice for a poster see their post get some reaction button presses to know they're not talking to themself.

Yeah, I've seen this on some other forums and I think it's really cool to have those buttons for Agree/Awesome/LOL or whatever.  Especially as you say on here where people don't necessarily always have a response but can give some feedback and/or encouragement to the person who posted.

A recent example of this I've seen is the Marvel Heroes forum where they even go the extra step of having little achievements/badges for getting 100 Agrees and such.  I think that sort of thing can potentially really help encourage positive discussions
