CD Project Red just released their financial details for the year ending June 30, here are the salient points:

6M units sold in 6 weeks, $83M dev budget, $53M in net profit so far.

Wow, that's quite a budget for a "smaller" AAA game (ie: not coming from one of the major publishers).  And that's quite a sizable profit for them already as well.

Supposedly they'll have some gameplay on Friday, which will be the point I start caring (or not).

September games are:

September 1:
- Deer God [Xbox One]
- Battlestations: Pacific[360]

September 15:
- Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition [Xbox One]
- Crysis 3 [360]

And a reminder that the Xbox One games are available for a full month (the mid-month ones continue until the middle of the next month), but the 360 ones are only available for 2 weeks each.  Also, the 360 games will all be backwards compatible on the Xbone when that launches.

The full destruction in the SP game doesn't make sense as you're trying to save the city, not level it. 😉

That never stopped the Earth Defense Force.  Tongue

Fun is fun, and blowing up a city is fun regardless of whether it "makes sense" in a game here you play a super powered agent that shoots rocket launchers and throws cars to take down criminals.

I've already played through Grow Home and it's definitely worth giving a try.

I didn't particularly enjoy Super Time Force Ultra, but other people seemed to.

I'll give Xeodrifter and La Mulana Ex a try.
7  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: 4K gaming on: August 22, 2015, 05:31:51 PM
Honestly, it feels a bit silly to me.  A 2GB 770 isn't going to to be able to play many games at 4k with decent settings and a playable framerate anyway, so I'd say there's no real point.  I also don't think that 4K resolution is really even necessary on a 28" scale, you kind of get into the territory of diminishing returns.

If it was me I'd probably stick with 1440p or lower resolutions unless you feel like spending the same amount of money on a video card.  Or just buy the video card with that money and stick with whatever monitor you already have and you'll get way more bang for your buck.

But I'm also one that thinks 4K is being pushed on consumers way before it's necessary (ie: before there is hardware to drive it or video content for it), so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Super Mario Maker (Wii U) on: August 20, 2015, 09:24:16 PM
I'm sort of excited for this as well and I'm glad they're making it.  It certainly looks like they've taken the time to make it into a pretty robust package with the 4 different tile sets, changing physics and allowing things that weren't even in the original games.

Having said that, I don't know how much of it I would actually play in reality.  I find that with games that have a ton of user generated content my interest wains really quickly, as I have little patience for dealing with mediocre content, finding the really good stuff, or even playing short levels and having to download more in between.

I really hate how much of the movie they keep showing in these trailers.  They've basically given away 90% of the plot.  If I hadn't already read the book I would be mad with how much tension they've stolen from the story.

Thankfully Microsoft has made rolling back a very simple process.  I think it took me like 20 minutes to roll my laptop back to Windows 7 after I got fed up of lost time dealing with bad driver issues.

I think I'll pass.

Do you not have wifi you can use for that?  Or stream directly through whatever computer you're using a that desk?

I may have fixed my issue where Filter Keys was getting turned on after an extended period of time. There were instances where I'd come back to find the screen locked and Filter Keys turned on. Going into accessibility settings would show they were turned off, but the keyboard wouldn't work properly until I rebooted.

I went into accessibility settings and under advanced unchecked the hotkey shortcuts for enabling Filter Keys, so that there was no way to turn them on via key press. Ever since then I have not had the issue occur. Don't understand the logic behind it, but so far so good.

I don't think I had ever even heard of the FilterKeys feature until now...   saywhat

Well, I ended up rolling my laptop back to Windows 7 today.  Thankfully Microsoft made that very easy to do (within the first month, at least).

There were just too many problems with drivers and things that were interfering with productivity, and since I'm now trying to work using my laptop that just became unacceptable.

I'll definitely still try it out in the future, assuming they fix these issues.  And it will go on my home desktop PC assuming there are no similar issues there.

You may already do this, but make sure your phone is on wifi any time it possibly can be.  I have mine on wifi at the house and work and that covers 95% of the time it's active.  I also don't use my phone a ton (not streaming audio in the car or anything), but I get by with a very low data limit without much trouble.

I played for a bit on the PC and it has definitely improved quite a bit due to the patches.  I got further in my first 8 days than I had in any previous try total.

Obviously I knew what I was doing now, but the lower prices definitely helped a lot, and something about the controls also felt better though I can't say why.

Oh, and one minor thing that was either patched or I never noticed before: it now only shows stars for skills you can afford to unlock now.  It may have been there before and I just never had enough money to unlock anything so I never noticed?

Has anybody played this much since they've been patching it?  Supposedly prices on starting gear have been lowered considerably, and some movement bugs have been fixed among other things.

Oh, it's also out on Xbone now as well.

Man, these guys really knew what properties to get to hit that geek demographic.  The prices all seem too high for me to want to jump in on another "toys to life" game, but I'll be damned if they don't keep tempting me with Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Simpsons, etc etc.  And being able to use any character in any set is fixing exactly what Disney Infinity got so wrong.

Rare Replay for me.  Microsoft had the deal with $10 back for any preorder, so that made it only $20 or something.
34  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Windows 10 Game Saves on: August 02, 2015, 02:41:41 PM
I'm assuming it's saving some files in a user directory that you don't have access to when you're not running it as Admin.

Did you change users since you installed that game?  Or did you install it as an Admin but your normal account isn't?

Sometimes installers also cause these problems because they require Admin to write the files they need, so they prompt for that and then also set a save directory based on "current user" (the elevated Admin) instead of "original user" so it does it as the Admin instead of your non-Admin account.

Well, it's supposedly increased worldwide internet traffic by 35% according to Akamai tracking.  They've supposedly reserved up to 40 Tb/s on the CDNs handling it.  Those seem like pretty big numbers to me.

I'm still not really sure what your problem is.  You cared about getting the upgrade immediately, so you downloaded it and got your upgrade.  Those that don't care to seek it out will get their notification when their wave comes up.  It's exactly what you want in essence, and there is no massive breakdown in services.

And yeah, probably could have used a dedicated thread.  Tongue

As for the preload - you know that they've reserved massive amounts of bandwidth on CDN, but are trying not to be dicks about choking the internets with millions of upgrades, right? Tongue

I'd say it's more like a billion upgrades, not just millions.  Windows 7/8/8.1 hold over 75% of the OS marketshare online and there are something like 2 billion PCs on the internet.  That's a lot of potential bandwidth, and probably just one of the reasons they planned a slow rollout.

And a slow rollout is just that, it's not all immediate on day 1.  If you haven't noticed, they also do that with Xbox One system updates and there's a couple orders of magnitude fewer of those.  If you're a power user paying attention you can go and manually update it as soon as an update is announced/released, otherwise if you're just a "normal" user they'll notify you within a week or two in order to cycle people though at different times.
40  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (7/28) on: July 30, 2015, 03:32:20 AM
The point of that notification thing is so they can roll it out slowly, and have the "general public" prepared for the change.

I don't think your average Windows user is sitting around waiting for July 29th and wondering "Where is my update?", they'll just do it when the icon tells them it's time.
