And, so far, there's one game that requires a memory chip.

There is a very big difference between something that is specifically designed for advancing games more than 2 years after the fact, vs shipping a crippled system that can't even support all of the games out of the gate.

Oh, and the games that required that expansion pack actually shipped with one in the only way that you could purchase those games.  So even if they bought one and brought it home on Christmas, they had everything necessary to play them.

Does no one remember the N64 expansion packs?  It's not like they haven't done this sort of thing before.

That was actually a very different thing.  First, it only came out a couple years after the console had already been on the market in order to give it more RAM for new games.

Secondly, you could still play any games up until it launched and the vast majority afterwards without it.  Only 3 games ever required it.

For me, the worst part of the driving is just the camera.  It swings around unlike a racing game would and kind of makes me sick.  I don't remember that from the previous test so I wonder if something has changed?  Or maybe I just didn't pay enough attention then.

Also, I thought that this was supposed to be a new area in this beta?  I was finally able to get in after getting a repeated error earlier, and it's the exact same area and exact same mission.  Sure glad I had to re-download that 25GB.  disgust

I'm not going to play through this stuff again, as I know I'll need to do it in the beginning of the game as well and just like The Crew if I do it in multiple betas I'll be so burned out on the early stuff I don't want to play the real game.

Oh boy...   retard  Not that it really surprises me, but to have one at launch that can't even fit on there is just really sad.

32GB is just such a small drive, it is hard to believe they would choose that, but of course Nintendo has always seemed a bit short-sighted on what other companies might want or require.

My guess is they went small on the internal HD because they used MicroSD cards for the expansion slot. MicroSD is so cheap that they figure everyone will upgrade on their own and get the size that they want. Thus saving Nintendo money by not including a large HD.

They could have really screwed us by including a small internal HD and then using a proprietary expansion memory type like Sony did with the Vita.

Yeah, obviously they did it as a cost saving measure and expect people to upgrade.  But it just doesn't seem right to do that and not even have the space for one game.  And Switch games are only going to get larger as they get more coming from the other consoles and PC.

Think of your average non-techie non-gamer family, which is their target audience.  How sad/upset would they be if they get one of those home on birthday/holiday and then realize that they can't even download the game little Jimmy really wants without going back to the store?

6  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Giant Killer Robots: Heavy Hitters miniatures game from Weta Workshop on KS on: February 22, 2017, 08:54:30 PM
Giant robots!  Miniaturized!  Weta!

As the title says, Weta Workshop has put up their first tabletop game on Kickstarter in collaboration with Cryptozoic.  Any decent miniatures game on Kickstarter tends to go a bit crazy, so hopefully this one does as well.

Giant Killer Robots: Heavy Hitters is a 2-4 player combat game on a hex board with cards.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wetaworkshop/gkr-heavy-hitters

I've seen videos and screenshots of this for quite a while, so I know they've been building the models of various sizes and playtesting the game for quite some time.  And of course both Weta and Cryptozoic are pretty well known in their respective fields, so this is no fly-by-night venture.

For anyone that was interested in this on PC but didn't want to jump into the Windows Store, it is coming to Steam on March 14th.

It's available for preorder and there is a 20% off discount up through launch, but then back up to $60 after that...which seems kinda crappy at this point.   disgust  Hopefully it has been patched to run well by then?  Or maybe it already has been?

Another Lego Batman trailer

https://youtu.be/rGQUKzSDhrg

I went to see this movie last weekend and it was great!  Lots of action and humor, as you'd expect.  I was a little worried about the kind of onenote "dark and brooding Batman" joke not carrying a whole movie, but it all definitely worked.  I'd say I maybe even enjoyed it more than the first LEGO Movie, and on the action front probably more than most superhero movies lately as well.

I guess they just released the Act IV expansion with 10 new zones, 17 new dungeons, new level cap, and more goodies.

I still can't get myself to jump in, just knowing the time investment (and wrist pain) there would be, but it is 25% off for anyone else that's interested.

Arrrrrrrise!  Thread necro!

This game comes out next week and it looks like the review embargo is up as of today.  Sitting at an 88% on Metacritic/Opencritic.  Mostly in the 90% range, with a few significantly lower that thought it was a bit too rote and uninteresting.

After reading a few of those reviews I am not highly tempted, despite the fact that I was going to go on a new game moratorium.  Gah!   retard

20  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Re: Why do Forums seem disconnected from main site? on: February 18, 2017, 10:46:17 PM
Haha, not a taboo topic, just one that has been talked about around here many times for the last several years.  (and probably even more times in private or the moderator forum).

Essentially, the forums and the front page grew from different audiences, for different purposes, and since there was nothing tying them together a small animosity developed on both sides of the equation.  The frontpage had been created and run from a source of voluntary love, being more of a financial burden than anything.  The forums grew largely from half of the audience from the old Gone Gold site when that closed down and GT was still Console Gold.

There are certainly things that could be done to cross pollinate, but in the past most small posts that come from front page contributors in bursts at times tend to annoy forumites because they don't follow standard forum etiquette of contributing more than just a link and not creating new threads when a discussion already exists in a dedicated thread.

There is also often a backend change "just around the corner", coming with the next update, next forum software, next redesign, next plan, or whatever that will try to tie them together with forum logins being used on the front page and vice versa.  But I think it just never happens because it's a lot of work and there isn't enough dedicated time/money/people to do that sort of thing for what is currently two very divergent audiences.

In the end, it might be worth it in the end to benefit both sides, but there is nobody to drive it to completion.

I've wishlisted this for eons even though I'm essentially retired from RTS gaming.

I bought this discounted Company of Heroes pack on Steam a while back and just couldn't get back into it at all, despite it being maybe my favorite game of 2006. I tried getting back into Starcraft II some years ago, but I dunno. The whole resource gathering, base-building, unit rush blah blah feels old and tired to me now. Or I'm just too old and tired for this genre anymore, the whole unit/base micromanagement thing.

I love everything Warhammer though, so of course I still hope this might reinvigorate my interest in the genre.  icon_smile

I haven't been paying too much close attention to which direction this game is going, but DoW2 had very little in the base-building traditional RTS stuff.  It was much more of a tactical squad game than the first Dawn of War.

How does Humble Monthly work?  Is it a subscription?

Yeah, it's a subscription.  You can sign up for 1 month, 3 months or a year I think.  Basically at the beginning of the month they reveal the "premier" game in the bundle, and you can join in, and then sales are cut off for that month just before they reveal all of the other games in the bundle.  And the bundle also includes exclusive little indie games.

For example, the February bundle had X-COM 2 as the featured game, and then on February 3rd they cut off sales and revealed it also included Ryse, Abzu, Steamworld Heist, Okhlos, Project Highrish, Husk, Hollow Knight preview and Oh, Deer (which is the exclusive indie game).

The March bundle has Total War: Warhammer as the featured game.  You have until March 3rd to subscribe to 1 or more months, and you get access to the revealed featured game immediately.

If anyone wants to sign up for that using my referral link, that would be cool (but that wasn't my intention of bringing this up): https://www.humblebundle.com/monthly?refc=QEWlsl

Bossa Studios has a new skateboarding game in Early Access that takes the old Graffiti mode from Tony Hawk Pro Skater where you take over hits, ramps, rails and sections of the map by doing tricks on them.  It looks like they have a touch of Splatoon in there as well with it being a bit more freeform splatted paint on the ground.

That's the same problem I have with it.  I may do it just for the Witness and give away everything else.

That's what I ended up doing.

I didn't have The Witness or Stardew Valley (or several of the smaller games), so I figured I would jump on it to support the cause, get a few games and have some extras to give away.  As if I didn't have enough of those already...
