Oh, and if you're interested, here's an 18 minute behind-the-scenes b-roll video.  I can't wait to see the making-of stuff on the blu-ray, I hope they go super in depth.

GOD DAMN!  I just watched Fury Road today and I don't think I could have asked for a better new Mad Max film!  So GOOD!  It was like 2 hours of adrenaline fueled madness.  I loved all the vehicles and practical effects and everything.

I've never left the theater wanting to stomp on the gas to a big V-8 more than today!  Sadly I drive a Ford Fusion Hybrid these days, so that will have to wait for another day...
3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/XB1/ps4] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on: May 24, 2015, 06:10:11 PM
I've played for several hours now, but I have hardly touched the crafting and haven't done any alchemy or other stuff.

Maybe it's just me, but it feels like the game would be better off without these peripheral aspects.  Too much inventory juggling, and paying for crafting materials or paying for dismantling, trying to find the right person..it seems like a level of complication beyond what I want to deal with.
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Weekend Playlist - Long weekend edition - 5/22/15 on: May 23, 2015, 07:59:40 AM
I started on The Witcher 3 tonight, but didn't really enjoy it so far.  I'll have to go back I'm sure, but it felt like a slow start and basic movement and things just felt kind of clunky and unresponsive.

Probably also some Marvel Heroes, maybe some Carmageddon now that it's really released.  And who knows what else.

6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/XB1/ps4] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on: May 22, 2015, 07:16:37 PM
These are reasons I just never use the game suspend mode on either console.  It's not rock solid and the saved time doesn't make up for the potential headaches and lost time with bugs and corrupt data.

Hopefully they fix this save issue quickly on all systems that are affected.
7  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: I had one job! on: May 21, 2015, 09:20:56 PM
Congrats!

Definitely a rare thing these days to have been able to stick with one job for so long.  You're also lucky to be able to retire at 55, young enough to really enjoy it!  smile

Well, I decided to pick this up and give it a try.  Or rather, order it from Amazon.  We'll see if it turns into my sort of game or not, but I figured there is enough universal praise that I could devote some time to it during this upcoming 3-day weekend.

I'm not sure they "nabbed" him, he left Bioware last summer so he was a free agent for quite a while.

I'm hopeful that they can foster compelling content, both with indie development and bringing in the big budget ones.

I would assume Creative Director for Microsoft Studios likely isn't involved with their indie outreach programs or signing third parties at all.  More of directing internal development from a high level.  And as he states in that interview "my primary focus will be the creative direction of HoloLens Experiences".

Quote
I wonder how much EA's purchase had to do with Casey being willing to leave Bioware...
Bioware was purchased by Elevation Partners 10 years ago, and EA then purchased them 8 years ago.  I think if that was the main reason he was leaving, it would have happened much sooner.  Of course one could say maybe potential future stagnation was the reason he left, and that may be due to the current environment, but I would guess if he wanted to change course there were other projects to work on there.

Mostly I'm just worried that Microsoft is putting too much of their internal development time behind Hololens instead of supporting the Xbox One with great first party games that I actually want to play.

A trailer for the new movie motivated me to look up the originals, which I never saw. They look like protracted car chases and explosions and gunplay and whatnot. Is that accurate?

From what I remember, the first Mad Max is largely a 70's style revenge flick.  Road Warrior is what most people probably think of when they think "Mad Max".  And then in my opinion Beyond Thunderdome kind of went off the rails despite some good elements at the start and end.

I don't remember how much it's established in the movies, but Road Warrior is supposed to be 15 years after Mad Max, and Beyond Thunderdome 5 years after that.

This new movie seems a bit like taking the most from The Road Warrior even though it's sort of it's own take on things.

100% with 34 reviewers so far.

Regardless of where it ends up, it can't be as bad as Beyond Thunderdome.  I watched that this weekend and had totally forgotten how much most of that movie just felt like another 80's "boy's republic" type action adventure.  You don't even see any cars until the last 15 minutes or something.  Not to mention, if this is taking place 20 years after "the event" where did all these 6-15 year old kids come from?  Tongue

They finally crossed the 1.5 million pound mark (~$2.3 million), which was their last stretch goal for an orchestral score.

They still have more than a month left for additional funding.  Obviously things slowed down after the first couple days, but that's pretty normal, usually with another spike in the last few days of the campaign.

Review embargo is up today, and so far it looks pretty good.  Mostly in the 80-90 range with an average of 84 on PC right now.

I think the average would be a big higher without one outlier at 60 from ShackNews.  I read the review and it sounded like he just didn't want anything approaching a sim racer.  And he didn't recognize that instead of "new game modes" the variety in a racing game largely comes from the range of cars, disciplines and tracks available.  Oh well, not for everyone.

Think fruit Ninja with zombies. Ugh.

I saw the GotY edition of that listed for both consoles.  Worth posting GotY releases?

Yes, it's a release this week, right?  Even if nobody buys it, I think the idea is to have all of the releases for the week up there.

Here's the launch trailer with more shiny cars and some beep boop music from Deadmau5 (since he's a fan/supporter).

I think only the PC version launches this week on Friday, with the PS4 and XB1 versions next Tuesday, at least in the US.
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (5/5) on: May 04, 2015, 04:33:00 AM
I invested in Project CARS, so I guess I get that even though I've had builds for over a year.

Interested in Wolfenstein, but I never finished the full game so I should wait on this one.

Yep, i got mine!  smile  I find it funny that they released a new Hulkbuster costume for Iron Man to match the movie one, when they already had  Hulkbuster one in there, but I guess they look pretty different.  I have 3 Hulk costumes that look even less different than those, heh.

Also, there's a new code for a 4-hour boost, just enter "ULTRON" in their code redeemer.

It was also fun just to log in and get my boatload of achievements unlocking, and an inventory of rewards from them.   thumbsup

Yeah, I hope that PS4 Ratchet and Clank is cool, I can't wait to see some info on it.

In the meantime, Yooka-Laylee's Kickstarter has gone over 1 million pounds ($1.6m US at this point) so they've completed all of their original stretch goals including simultaneous release on consoles.

They also added a couple new stretch goals, but thankfully the new goals are nothing big, so they're not biting off much more than they could already chew.

Definitely more Dirt Rally, I need to dig further into the career and team stuff.  And maybe more Kaiju-a-GoGo since they fixed a few things; despite frustrations and not thinking it's really ready for full release I still enjoy it.

I might have to fire up Marvel Heroes for some Ultron action myself.  smile
35  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Yooka-Laylee (colorful 3D platformer, spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie) on: May 01, 2015, 09:41:09 PM
A bunch of ex-Rare developers have launched their Kickstarter for Yooka-Laylee, a spiritual successor to the old school 3D platforming of Banjo-Kazooie.

They just launched today and are already over 300% of their goal, so I think this one will make it.  slywink

I'm not as fond of these characters as I was of the bear and bird (or at least the bear), but I could definitely go for some of that platforming action that has been missing the last few years.  I think bringing back their old composers also really helps, that music set the mood for the old games.

Sweet!  That feature has been "coming soon" since before I even started playing.  smile  Might be a good reason for me to go back to it.

Also, if you log in this Saturday, May 2nd you'll get a free Iron Man Mark 43 costume.    They also have 50% bonus XP for all Avengers played until the end of May, I think.  They tend to do plenty of other big things for events, so I imagine starting Friday there will be more event madness.

Oh, and in case you weren't aware, they frequently do other free code giveaways, some of which are still active.  I usually check this site regularly for new ones: http://orcz.com/Marvel_Heroes:_Promo_Codes  Just copy the code and go to www.marvelheroes.com, sign in and then Home->Redeem Key.

I played for about an hour and a half tonight and so far my impressions are: I'm terrible at this, and it is great!    icon_biggrin

Tracks are a bit narrower than usual Dirt tracks, and they seem longer as well but that may be due to the fact you can only afford a 60's rally car when you start the career so you're moving quite slow overall.  A track that took me over 7 minutes in a 60's car was 4:30 in a 2010's Ford Fiesta.  The cars definitely feel a bit better on the road to me, really feeling connected and grippy (or lacking grip, as the case may be) and less arcade-y.  I wouldn't call it the best rally simulation ever, but it's pretty damn fun.

I chose the Lancia Fulvia HF for my first career car and I competed in two four-race rallies with it.  You can repair your car in between the second and third race in a rally.  You get 30 minutes to repair, or you can go up to 45 minutes with penalties.  Let's just say that 30 minutes did not even come close to repairing the damage I had done in the first copraces.  It didn't even fix just my radiator.

In my second rally, I blew a tire halfway through the second race so I had to finish that race on the rim (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=434046009).  I had also smashed my radiator pretty hard into a rock, so I had to split my repair time between wheels and radiator, even though the radiator was much worse off.  In the end, I ended up smacking a tree on the final stretch of the 4th race and got knocked out of the rally altogether.  I lost $5 grand to repairs even with my minimal earnings, so I've got to be a bit more careful.  icon_redface

I also did one custom race in a 2010's Ford Fiesta just to compare the feel and race times.  Definitely faster, definitely harder to keep on the road at times due to higher speeds, but also much better grip with the all wheel drive.

Anyway, if you're one of those people who has bemoaned Codies taking Dirt more and more into dudebro territory, and wished they would go back to the roots of Colin McRae, I definitely suggest you check this out.  I think it's worth it just to send a message with your wallet that people want these games.   thumbsup

I searched around and it looked like we didn't have a thread for the upcoming Mad Max game yet.

This one is being made by Avalanche Sweden, the guys who made Just Cause 1 & 2, and it should be out in September (Just Cause 3 is being made by a new Avalanche New York team).

They released the first gameplay trailer last week, a lenghty 4 minute explanation of the gameplay.  I'm looking forward to it!   thumbsup  I like the focus on building your own custom Magnum Opus car.

It was also a Game Informer monthly feature, so they've got a bunch of articles and stuff at this hub: http://www.gameinformer.com/p/madmax.aspx
