This is surprisingly a ton of fun.

Imagine...if Final Fantasy XIV and Animal Crossing had a kid. This is sorta the result.

I hadn't been quite sure what this game was, if it was Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon or a JRPG or what.  Sounds like some combination of all the above.

Um, so the PS+ Edition has been postponed until further notice and they're still working on the "fully connected experience", whatever that means.

I'm assuming you've run malware and virus detection like MalwareBytes and Microsoft Security Essentials or something?

Yeah, I think I'll just wait to download this update until they send out a fix.  Although I always have mine in true "off" (low power) mode and not sleep, so might not be affected anyway.

I'm interested to hear some opinions out of this "big alpha", assuming some balancing and changes have happened.  I went from "definitely buying" based on previews to "holding off" after trying the last one.

I would also love it if they got rid of the ammo.  Nothing worse than being out of ammo for the gun(s) that are effective against the type of enemies you're fighting and having to shoot nonstop records at humans that barely take notice.  It's not fun to run out of ammo, ever, and for a game that should be much more about over-the-top action I don't want to have to worry about that.

It's really a minor variation on the Ratchet and Clank and Resistance weapon wheel systems. You're required to learn what the weapons do so you can switch off when needed. There's actually a lot of ammo around in the white boxes.

I think it would be less of a problem if I was down on the ground exploring the environment as I was shooting and running out of ammo.  The fact that I'm up on some grind wires so far away from those boxes and enemies (that sometimes drop ammo) and need to stay away from them by design means that I ran out of ammo a lot during the times I actually need it: when fighting hordes from a distance.

I may be mistaken but it seemed like the loot vacuum distance also seems to change size depending on what you're doing.  That makes it less predictable for a new player and hard to know if it didn't pick up that ammo box because it's of a type you're already full of or because you're too far or in the wrong state or something.  I'm sure more time with the game will help with identifying this, but the game would be better overall if I didn't have to.
7  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Steam Deals Thread: Daily, Weekly, Midweek, Weekend and all other sales! on: October 29, 2014, 09:21:46 PM
Just be aware that the 30 day average for players online is less than 20, and since it's a multiplayer game you're probably best off getting it right now when there is a bump in popularity or waiting until eventual release.
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XB1] Sunset Overdrive (Insomniac's latest) on: October 29, 2014, 09:17:56 PM
I played a couple hours last night and so far I'm a bit luke warm on it.  I'm going to give it time, though, as I know you get more traversal options later on.

In general it feels a lot like Dead Rising 3 (in a good way), except you have to keep moving which doesn't really work great for me.  Especially when fighting the big creatures or giant mobs of them, I just end up grinding back and forth and back and forth and back and forth shooting the same monster or mobs of them.  That's not super fun in any way.

Unlike others, I felt pretty limited by the character creation.  It's extremely hard to find options that don't make you look like a total douchebag a-hole.  In the end I went with the shaved head and a beard, and then got a bandanna to cover up the beard anyway.  I looked at other things available at the first clothing vendor, and that all looked pretty terrible as well.

Cooperative building, mining and town protecting against attacking kaiju in a blank canvas world of animated futuristic 1967 Russia made by the PixelJunk guys.  Or something.

I just found this 40 minute video of them streaming the gameplay during an ExtraLife marathon and goddamn, their materials and lighting just blows my mind.  Combined with the art style of the old style 50's/60's toys and animation it all has a really unique, awesome look to it.

I think they had an alpha sign up until very recently, but I can't find that anymore.

Lots of good stuff there!  I think this shows that the Disney acquisition was actually a good thing, as they realize the inherent value in older properties and are finally doing the obvious thing.

I'm most excited for Sam & Max Hit the Road.  That is one of my all-time favorites and still one of the funniest games I've ever played (at least according to my memories from when I was ~15 or whatever).

So this one comes out on Tuesday the 28th and there hasn't been much talk about it around here.  Anybody excited for it?

I'm hoping for the best (basically that it's a fast action version of Dead Rising 3), but I keep getting a weird vibe about it maybe being less fun than they want you to think.  They are also trying waaaay too hard with the "attitude" part of the game.

I finished up Shadow of Mordor last weekend, so I think mostly Forza Horizon 2 and maybe try a little more of Styx.

And I'm sure at least a couple hours of Marvel Heroes to get Captain America to level 60 before I switch to another hero.

That one is tempting. I loved the videos I've seen of it but all the past survival/crafting games I've played in the past I stopped playing after a few go's.

Last I heard The Forrest also wasn't very fleshed out past the first hour or two, so unless it has changed a lot (it may have, Early Access and all) that's another reason to maybe wait.

Other than the Bombcast I have started listening to We Have Concerns, which is a semi-science-y podcast with Anthony Carboni and Jeff Cannata.

I also keep trying out Tested.com.  I like their Still Untitled podcasts with Adam Savage, but the core This Is Only a Test ones can get kind of annoying (especially when they just talk about Apple stuff week after week).

I also really love their A Bunch of Dads episodes.  They had only happened randomly before so I was glad to see those are coming back as a regular feature.  I'm not even a dad, but I get a lot of laughs out of those knuckleheads.

I tried RadioLab but couldn't really get into it; too over produced or something.

I also tried Comedy Bang Bang and also couldn't get into that.  Seemed very un-funny for a comedy podcast, heh.

The consensus is that Uber burned some bridges after MNC, SMNC and PA development fell off after the next game came out.  I expect a different take on HR at some point, but for now, this one is dead.

Yeah, I think they just didn't have the pull any longer to get the backing.  Which is too bad, the concept is cool and the pre-viz video looked amazing.

Hopefully they can bring back the concept in some other way in the future.

I really like the updates to the Snap feature, makes it much more usable.  I can't tell you how many times I've nearly thrown my controller in frustration at that thing before.

And the changes to the dashboard almost feel like they're getting closer to what the 360 used to be, which is not a bad thing in my mind.  Nice being able to see friends and stuff without going into a separate app that takes time to load.
26  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/XB1/Wii U/Ps4] Project CARS on: October 17, 2014, 11:22:06 PM
This was supposed to come out in November but has now been delayed until March 2015, both to avoid the overlap with many bigger name games and because they need more time to polish and finish it up for all platforms.

I think it will be better for them in the long run and allow them to make a bigger splash to have several months between their release and the other driving games of the fall/holidays (Forza Horizon 2, DriveClub and The Crew) and all of the other big launches between now and the holidays.  Too easy for a smaller mid-level game to get overlooked when directly competing against the AAA crowd and their marketing.

[as an aside, how sad is it that the other participants in this thread are mostly MIA?]

Interesting that the Schaefer brothers have "broken up" after so many years working together.  And I wonder where that leaves Runic with no Baldtree either.  It really felt like they went dark after launching Torchlight 2 as it was.

As for the game, another space game at this point doesn't exactly get me excited, heh.

I haven't played any of the recent CoD games, but this one is potentially interesting to me since it does mix things up more than usual.

I'll still probably wait to see how the response is and if they've improved the single player considerably, but that's more interested than I've been in quite a while.

This is kinda too late to the party. Between Amazon Prime, Comcast OnDemand Free HBO Previews (which come up every few months), and what I can grab from the library for free there isn't so much demand for this anymore.

I'm not sure you realize that Comcast anything doesn't help for the millions of people who have cut the cord and no longer subscribe to cable at all.  The whole point of this is that it's a service that would be available for those who don't already subscribe to cable since an HBO (and HBO Go) subscription requires that as a prerequisite.

Of course, I agree with the others here that if it's not available at a decent price I don't think it will take off.

I bought a Pro controller when I first got my Wii U and I have regretted it ever since.  I've never used it, lots of games don't support it (or at least didn't) and I find the gamepad to be as comfortable as the Pro controller anyway.
33  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: XB1 game preorders $15 back on: October 14, 2014, 08:27:29 PM
Yeah, it seems clear that neither console manufacturer has really figured out why Steam is so popular and how to get more people transitioned to digital.  I can get a new game from Amazon for cheaper than digital, and I can get an old game way cheaper anywhere than their digital prices.

I'll continue to buy disc-based games as long as they continue to have bad pricing policies on downloads.

I'm with you guys, I'm not really good at these sorts of games but all the glowing reviews sort of tempt me.  I tried the first Bayonetta when it had a demo on the 360, but I gave up quickly due to absurd "sexiness" and quick event gameplay.

I'd love to see a review of this game from the perspective of somebody who hates anime and isn't particularly great at combo-filled games like DMC and see if they still give it crazy props.   nod

Don't turn this into a debate about trophies/achievements. You have nothing to gain from doing so, and it's clear you don't understand the concept to begin with. Just leave it alone.

They've released a patch today to address "gameplay and aesthetic improvements" for the most common complaints.

Quote
To improve your gaming experience, we are pleased to announce the release of an update containing both gameplay and aesthetic improvements.

Change Log:

Improved ledge detection when jumping toward ledges.
Enhanced the anisotropy option.
Refinement of the mouse sensitivity of the camera when it is set to maximum (100%).
Added new bindable buttons (mouse button 4 & 5, Home, End, Ins, Del, PageUp / Down, Alt, AltGr).
Quick-save / quick-load controls are now displayed in the options menu.
40  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / XB1 game preorders $15 back on: October 13, 2014, 07:26:43 PM
The Microsoft Store is running a deal for anybody who is an Xbox Rewards member (and there's no reason not to be, it's free and you get money back) where you will get $15 worth of credits back for preordering "any of the hottest upcoming games".  I think they have to be games that ship this year, fwiw.  Most of these titles also get $10 back if you're not a member, but really, just sign up and get the better reward instead.

They also give free shipping and supposedly release day delivery, so that takes out the two legs Amazon Prime usually stands on for me.  I decided to preorder Sunset Overdrive and LEGO Batman 3.  They have pretty much everything else available to that I could see.

Here's the store link I got[/url from their email.
