1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4] Bloodborne (previously known as Project Beast) on: March 27, 2015, 06:00:20 PM
I played for maybe a couple hours last night and so far I'm not super enthused about it.  There's nothing wrong with it, but I wasn't prepared to feel bored by this as if I had just picked up Dark Souls 2 again or something.

I already played Dark Souls 2 as a "roll and dodge" character, barely using shields and never just sitting and blocking, so this doesn't feel super different in that way (and in fact feels worse at first blush, since it seems harder/impossible to dodge roll forward to get behind enemies than I remember).

I'll probably have to give it more time to get deeper in and a better handle on the changes and additions, but right now it isn't giving me much motivation to play it over something else which is surprising.

I'll just mention it in here as well in case people are avoiding the existing thread on Forza Horizon 2: the standalone expansion/tie-in thingy for Horizon 2 and Fast & Furious 7 is available free to download for it's first couple weeks.  It'll be $10 after that.

That free Fast & Furious standalone expansion thing went live last night.  I downloaded it but didn't have time to actually try it out yet.

I went in with pretty poor expectations since I hate things that are super reference heavy, so I think i was surprised it wasn't as terrible as I thought once I got in.  I see this book compared to Lucky Wander Boy quite a bit, and in my mind it wasn't anywhere near that bad with trying to be hipster reference-y at all.
7  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox free Games With Gold program on: March 26, 2015, 05:51:18 PM
I searched and didn't see a dedicated thread for this, so I figured I'd just start one rather than continue to derail other threads randomly.

The free April Games With Gold are:

XBox One: Pool Nation FX and Child of Light
Xbox 360: Gears of War: Judgement and Terraria for the 1st to 15th; Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel from the 15th to 31st.

Decent choices, but nothing I'm super interested in to be honest.  Maybe I'll give Army of Two a try, if I'm not still playing a bunch of other games then.
8  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Top Gear [US] on: March 25, 2015, 09:08:55 PM
I certainly don't know the situation at the BBC (policitally, money-wise, or any of that), but even though Top Gear is really popular I would suspect that maybe they are at the point where those hosts have been around so long and they have so much control, investment and money coming to them that it's probably a bit like a golden albatross around the BBC's neck.  (I just made up that analogy, hopefully it makes sense...)

It's not like this is the first controversy with Top Gear or even Clarkson himself, so somebody found it convenient to show their morals this time.  If you were ever looking for a way to shut that thing down and get rid of the most expensive presenter, it was basically handed to them.

10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Crew Thread is Broken? on: March 25, 2015, 06:17:56 PM
I haven't played it in a couple months due to being distracted with other games, but I did actually enjoy it.  I think the game is better than many people (who often didn't play it) gave it credit for and I like it from many aspects.  Having said that, I had some issues with it and it's not a clear recommendation to everybody.

Probably my biggest complaint is that the handling was just slightly "off" when I played.  Thankfully they did actually let you tune a lot of that more to your liking and a couple small tweaks improved it a lot for me.  But that felt slightly more like a cop out as if they couldn't find the right tuning themselves.  I know they have actually done some reworking of the physics and handling models in a couple patches, but I haven't gone back to try it out.  I really want to soon, though.

It also felt like the game lacked cars, and was really stingy about giving some of them them to you as well.  I played for many hours and still couldn't afford one of the nicer cars I wanted to buy so I just played with the ones I unlocked via the campaign.  They weren't bad, and there were other cheap ones available, just not the exact cars I wanted.  Making those prices so high felt kind of dirty given that they were selling in-game currency that allows you to bypass the grind.  Compared to something like Forza Horizon 2 where there are a ton of available cars and I could buy them almost any time I wanted, it was a pretty big let down for me there.  I know they've been releasing car packs as paid DLC, but most of those are not aimed at my offroad/raid preference.

Another big problem is that I don't know that they took quite as much advantage of having a giant open world as they could have.  Some things (like the driving challenges you just drive through to start) were great distractions but it felt like the collectibles were too hidden and too few (odd for a Ubisoft game, I know).

And as mentioned, the story is pretty terrible crap that I ended up skipping after a while.

But in the end when it came down to actually driving my badass offroad-equipped Mustang across a field and jumping some hills and drifting around corners?  I had a ton of fun with that sort of thing.

There's a huge world that is very diverse and it's actually much more open and free than something like Forza Horizon 2.  It's a shame more people might not experience it because they thought it was silly to have to find radar dishes to show side missions on the map.

But a source close to the inquiry said: “There can’t be one rule for talent and one rule for ordinary human beings.”

In general I totally agree with that sentiment, but it seems like they're just pulling it out when it's convenient for their media purposes.

You can't really say somebody who is getting paid tens of millions of pounds, probably many times more what that producer makes let alone any other staffer, is not already being treated differently.  I think the fact is that "the talent" has been treated completely differently for 20 years and it's only now that they consider it convenient to say he shouldn't be.

Well, I can't seem to find the real thread for The Crew when searching, so I guess this is the next best thing.

For anyone that might still be interested, you can now try out the full version for 2 hours on PS4 or XB1 and keep your saved progress if you buy the full game.

I doubt you'll get super far in 2 hours, but it at least gives you a chance to try out a few vehicles and see if you like any of the handling (because you're bound to hate the dumb story, heh).

That guy doesn't work in a business with those functions or for someone who reports to shareholders.  I'm sure the view from his ivory tower is quite rosy.  smile

I've worked with an automated portion of the warehouse - it was FANTASTIC...when it worked (infrequent).  When it didn't (frequent), forklifts and their drivers were quite busy.  Real estate will almost certainly disappear, but while food ordering might, food preparation is far less likely.  Then there are all the factories - stuff that creating reliable robots for is too hard or costly.  20 years is a pipe dream.

On the other hand, maybe he's right.  I mean, you were able to place your order for a flying car this week, right?

Amazon is an example of a business that has utilized automation to make their warehouses much more efficient, essentially bringing the product to the packagers.

LEGO also has a nearly fully automated facilities for manufacturing and packaging of millions of bricks.  They only have a handful of people watching the whole place and don't even let the bricks be "contaminated" by human handling.

UPS and FedEx also have large mostly automated sorting facilities.

It's certainly possible even right now for companies that have the money and foresight, I imagine it will only become more adopted with time.  I don't think 20 (or 50) years is out of the question at all for more widespread impact.

Surprised no one here is interested in this type of game?

It sounds interesting, but I think I'm just a bit burned out on Kickstarters these days, especially really long term ones like an MMO is bound to be.

It also felt like some of their design ideas sounded a little too high level and hand wavy and not enough specific, concrete details for my taste.

I'm glad they made their goal, but I'll probably wait to check back on the game when they have something more real to show.

I think I'm firmly in the "wait for reviews" camp, but if they're good I'll jump on it next week.  I enjoyed Dark Souls 2 for the most part, but I never played Demon Souls or Dark Souls 1.

Man you played arguably the worst one. Demon's has the most memorable areas, and the first Dark has the most cohesive interconnected world.  DS2 is good but the world and level design were a bit weaker than the first one, the combat had some issues as well with some weird hit boxes.

I have Dark Souls on PC, but I could never get the higher res mods to work correctly and it looked terrible at default resolution so I couldn't stand to play it for very long.  The fact that they couldn't eve provide a half decent port or fix it later rubbed me the wrong way as well.
25  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Doctor Who: the original series on: March 21, 2015, 08:32:22 AM
Um, I don't know, several years ago.  Maybe 2009 or so.  It might have been David Tennant, though I don't pay much attention to the newer doctors.

One episode I remember was something about a little girl drawing monsters and the monsters came to life or something, and it looked bad and was generally wooden over acting.  That sort of thing was funny when it was from the 70's or 80's, but just seemed sad in modern day.  I tried a couple others after that but nothing stuck and it seemed to be not what I was looking for so I chalked it up to the usual nerdery over hype.

It was probably no worse than any SyFy show or anything, I just really tend to hate "low" budget modern TV sci fi.  Even the best of it frequently has to be looked at in rose colored glasses in my opinion.

I used to watch the old Dr Who with my dad all the time as a kid, and of course Tom Baker was the favorite of both of us.

I tried to watch one of the new Who's a few years ago and just really couldn't take it.  It has the problem of being a modern low budget sci fi show, which just makes everything look like terrible digital effects.  People say it has the same feel, but to me it was totally different and the worse for it.

I really barely played the TJ&E games so my opinion doesn't carry much weight, but I have to agree with some people that have said it might be better if the voices and music was all unintelligible 16-bit style.  Giving real voices and raps is probably only going to come off as low budget or really date the game.

I'm also pretty concerned with the number of physical rewards they are giving out, and at really low pledge levels.  Even with their current pledge levels they are shipping out nearly three thousand packages with a whole variety of things in them, and that takes a lot of time and money.

Meh, if web shows like The Guild can do cons and crowds on a low budget, I don't see them having any trouble.  It's all about the illusion, you don't have to actually have that large of a space.

Bravo to them if they've made a realistic gamer and game developer.  Most of the time movies or TV shows have somebody be a "game developer" it's usually some terribly inaccurate stereotype, as if they took the guy who wrote the "tech talk" from any cop procedural and assigned him to "gamer speak".

It generally infuriates me just like those commercials where they "tighten up the graphics on level 3" and they're "just testing out the new level then we're going to design a new game".

I do find it funny that you had no idea the Gaymer thing existed, you must not frequent sites like Kotaku or Joystiq or any of those that reported on it quite a bit.
