You speak of a "youth vote" as if it actually exists.

Sorry, but the gamers don't exactly have much political clout.  The reason why politicians get all in such a tizzy whenever anything likes this comes up is because that's what gets them votes.

Yeah, I would be inclined to say go for it.  Maybe talk to a couple lawyer friends if you have some handy, or maybe see if you can a free consultation with a local lawyer.

But I would at least ask around at the local small claims court.  I suspect that if you say "I've filed a claim in court" that they would be much more willing to negotiate.

Clinton gets press and gets to be seen as 'protecting the children'.  4)  Parents who could give a shit less about their kids can get offended 5) Anti-government people can bitch about the government getting involved in games and the rest of us can 6) bitch about parents needing to do the parenting. :p

Trying to explain to me that this movie is enjoyable, after I saw the trailer, would be like trying to explain how gravity pulls up.

Gravity doesn't pull up or down. That's just your perspective. Gravity is a force that is created mass displacement. Lets say the planet is a set of giant underpants, and your house was just south of the "pocket region" (guys, you know which pocket I'm talking about.. the one to hold your keys, or the baked potato you were saving till later slywink ). From the planet-size-plus wearer of said gitch, gravity was pulling you UP into them.

Now go watch FF. slywink

BTW. The property value of your house sucks, partly cuz it's in a swamp, but mostly cuz it's right near the "skidmarked landing strips". :: shudder ::

Yes, it's from my perspective.  My CORRECT perspective.  I drop my keys, they fall down.  That's enough for me, science-boy.

11  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Best Movie Escape? on: July 07, 2005, 01:50:01 AM
Quote from: "Autistic Angel"
The issue is that you would have no idea what point in the movie you would be entering until after you'd made your choice by running into one of the theaters.  Sure, it's *possible* that you'd luck out and get to spend several days in Rivendell chatting it up with Arwen, but taken as a percentage of the overall film, it's far more likely that you'd find yourself in the heart of Mordor or some impossible battle sequence.

-Autistic Angel

Well, in light of that I'm going to change my vote from Return of the King to ID4.  The actual killing & devastation in that film is relatively limited, so as long as you don't appear in the relatively short sequence where the aliens use their "city-destroying ray", then you're good.  If you appear in a city you can just clear out and stay in some country town until everything blows over.
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Best Movie Escape? on: July 06, 2005, 02:48:28 PM
Do you have to stay within the scenes of the movie?  Otherwise, you could go to "Return of the King", then just stay in one of the battle-free cities (say, the capital of Rohan) until you return to reality.  That would be present the lowest chance of getting your crap ruined.

15  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor Retires on: July 05, 2005, 07:50:28 PM
We'd really need context for this quote.  It could just mean that when you are at the apex of democracy ("liberal" in this context being 19th century 'freedom from gov't' liberalism, rather than modern liberalism), you are by definition most free.  Therefore, any change at all (any "road") would lead closer to slavery.

Still not exactly sure what she's getting at, but the context would be necessary for that.

I have to say that as a politics-buff I'm really looking forward to this fight.  It's going to be ugly, and I probably won't like the nominee, and a lot of bad laws will probably result, but hey, at least it'll be interesting.

And hey, I'm doing pretty well in law school.  Time to dust off the ol' resume and send Bush a present or two.
17  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / War of the worlds on: June 30, 2005, 02:06:20 PM
I really don't see why we needed another modern-day remake.  If they're going to make another one, why not faithfully set it in early 20th century London for once?

Also, the book is much much better precisely because the aliens aren't invincible so the whole thing seems more realistic.  They take out a couple alien crafts with 1905-era artillery.  I think that also makes the illness thing seem at least a little more plausible.

The conservative bloc dissented; the majority was the 4 liberal justices plus Kennedy (who concurred, providing a slight limitation that courts can review these takings for blatant economic favoritism - i.e. giving all the property to one company rather than having an open bidding process, etc.)

This could be the first time that I wholeheartedly agree with the conservative bloc over the liberal bloc on the Supreme Court.

It explains exactly why GW and friends want to be in Iraq as long as po$$ible.

Check the date of "Baghdad Year Zero".  It was written in Sept. 2004 long before the elections took place. It contains alot of  hear say and back door meetings that can't be verified or challenged. It can't say anything about the current political/economic situation in Iraq since it was written so long ago and much has changed. I saw nothing in the report that suggests that GW would prefer to damage his political situation further in order to better his personal financial situation.

I knew you would find a dodge.  This is what's called the 'we just dont know' defense.

Ok, I should point out that attacking a source is a perfectly reasonable thing to do in an argument.  If MZW, arguing that Bush didn't lie about WMD in Iraq, pulled out a memorandum of support written by George W. Bush, you would quite reasonably dismiss it as biased (and therefore give little if any weight to its contents).  On a similar (though less extreme) note, he's arguing that Baghdad Year Zero is outdated and off point.  You might not find this convincing, but it's not a dodge.  Feel free to refute his points about Baghdad Year Zero.[/quote]

Not sure if this should be in general gaming or PC gaming, but since I imagine it'd be primarily of interest to the board game people here, Paradox interactive is making a Diplomacy computer game, which the Diplomatic Pouch has an interview about:

Quote from: "unbreakable"

If someone were truly innocent, I can't see them paying off the accuser, especially when a team of lawyers could win in court for either the same money or less.  Or more, but at least you arent rewarding bad behavior.

I disagree.  Faced with the choice of a lawsuit that could cost, if you lose, somewhere like 4 million, and say you're guaranteed to pay at least 1 million in legal fees regardless, and someone says "I'll go away if you just give me $1 million", I could see myself paying them off.  Consider that if you don't you:

1) Have to pay out a huge amount of money, win or lose
2) Have to go through an embarrassing and extraordinarily stressful public trial (particularly if you are accused of something sexual)
3) Risk losing, and not only having to pay out but also of having, while not a conviction (in a civil case), still a judgment calling you a pervert.

So for the most part I don't regard settling as being of much weight as to guilt.

38  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Starshifter! How's your Progress in KOTOR 2? on: June 13, 2005, 05:48:35 PM
The ending didn't hurt me so much as it seemed to hurt other people.  But Starshifter, you should look up on the internet (it's available in the KOTOR 2 forums at obsidian entertainment, and probably elsewhere) all of the ending stuff that was cut.  That really would've made the game legendary, IMO.  Lots of great stuff, including more allied involvement in Malachor V - heroic sacrifices, manipulation, etc.  In particular, Kreia (ever the master manipulator) takes whatever love-interest you spurn and uses their feelings to turn them to the dark side (or to her side, at least, if you're evil) and against you.

But alas, it was not to be.
