Even though the line was scripted, and the mission partly done for political reasons, he remains the first of humankind to set foot on alien terrain. He and his crew expanded the realm of what is possible for all mankind. I can only hope that we continue to look forward at what's still left to do, and what needs to be transitioned from impossible to possible.

Requiescat in Pace, Neil.

Just actually walked through my house with the family. Got the keys a few hours ago. A bit of a mess to clean up, needs paint, carpet, and some outdoor landscaping, but I can't wait to move in!

It's been awhile since I've had a chance to post.

Long story short: I was dating a coworker that I have since married. We had to keep things under wraps because our particular offshoot of the company was rather draconian about it, well beyond what was listed in the corporate guidelines. I left the company in August 2011, and managed to get a few people to follow me. I wanted to keep that quiet, as I was trying to be professional and leave on good terms (though my direct supervisors were not so professional about it).

On my birthday in December, I made a list of things to accomplish this year:

1. Get married (Done!)
2. Buy a house (Closing next week)
3. Get my black belt (Done!)
4. Get my CCIE ( Lab date Aug 10th)

With everything that happened before (gall bladder issues for 2+ years) I'd gone from what I considered my peak something worse. I feel that I'm finally back on track.

That's me on the far left, next to Ron. One of the proudest days of my life.

With 4 year olds, there are very few schools that can offer more than expensive day-care services. I'm sure Knightshade will say the same, but scout a few different schools, and watch the classes. Specifically, look at the instructor, the methods used for disciplining the children, and the way the children react to him/her. A school with children that act poorly reflects on the school more than the children.

Yep. New Kindle is here and wife is happy. So I guess that's all that matters.

Must go stab something.
12  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Kindle Fire Rage [Rant] on: April 13, 2012, 11:48:46 PM
So,

I love my Kindle Fire. It's a well rounded device. I use it to podcast at work (no Wifi there, I preload), read books for fun and for study, play games, and watch videos occasionally. For all of those things I think it works exceptionally well.

My wife bought it for me on my birthday in December. It was DOA. I went through the RMA process and they said 3 days to replace. So cut to me ordering another on Prime and having it 6 hours later. After the swaps everything goes well.

Now my wife wants one of her own. No problem, I order one and choose expedited shipping. It goes to a local courier, who fails to deliver it. We call them and find out the box is empty (not entirely sure how they determined that). So either it never came or someone at the courier now has a Kindle Fire. Now I wait for another RMA process and hope it won't be Monday before this one comes in.

So, I've had to use Amazon Prime a lot for something that should be in their wheelhouse, given that it's their signature product, and I've yet to get anything faster.

Now,

I studied Latin and Greek for over 2 decades. I've often had problems watching these kinds of movies. So I didn't really like this one, but not for that reason. The myths were obviously changed, but it had the same problems Immortals had. The plot had the same hole:

Spoiler for Hiden:
In Immortals, they built a cage for the Titans that Zeus destroyed by pulling on 2 giant chains that were built into the original design. In Wrath, the 3-part weapon that the sons of Kronos used to imprison their father killed him this time. For no explainable reason.

IMO,

Netflix may see more of this. It may even be the end of this service, giving rise to something else entirely. They based their business model on reaching as many people as they could, with unsustainable costs. Now that they've done that, they hope they can keep enough content and customers to continue. Public opinion and media-owning service providers could easily save or kill Netflix if the industry direction goes one way or another.

That's why I invest in Gold/DVDs/Blu-Ray. smile

But this tension is one of the major reasons that I am leaving to begin with, so I guess I'll just deal with it for now.

You could just take this week off and enjoy some downtime at home rather than at the office.

+1 - offer to work remotely.

Had my last day yesterday. None of my bosses said more than 2 words to me. MY ex-VP came down and talked to me for about 30 minutes, wished me well, and may actually try to create the architecture position I was wanting. I just recently got an amazing job offer. I've given almost 3 weeks notice, but there are several people that have approached me wanting information on jobs at my new company, and asking for references. I'm not sure if there is a standard etiquette to be followed. Any advice?

General etiquette is to not proactively pursue any hires but if someone reaches out to you, you should be OK to give them the info they are looking for.  This of course must all be done AFTER you have left your current position.

Currently on vacation this week (scheduled for CCIE exam). Last time I didn't give myself any padding, and I ended up working over 26 hours in 2 days for a non-essential task. I am back in the office this Monday for my last week. I think people are starting to steer around me; not maliciously, just in the "if I wait I might not have to do X" mentality. So I'm prepared to be very bored.

Well, I was coughing so hard during the exam that I nearly passed out. Consequently, I failed the Troubleshooting section but I rocked the Configuration. One of these days I'll be able to take this test without being ill.

On the plus side, I was given a huge salary bump at the new job simply for taking the test, so I'm less stressed about it.

Can you recommend a good vaccuum pot? I used to have one, but Starbucks discontinued it. I love my French Press and my pump-driven Espresso machine.

Quote from: Z-Corn on August 17, 2011, 11:16:27 AM

In the past few months I've gotten back into roasting coffee again after a few years hiatus.  Let me bore you with my preaching!

First, please don't buy OR drink that terrible pre-flavored coffee.  There is a reason they flavor it.  It is unfit for consumption otherwise.  It is usually immature low-altitude grown robusta from Viet Nam.  If you MUST drink flavored coffee there are syrups you may add to the cup that aren't so bad.  But know that You Are Still Doing It Wrong.

I generally only drink one cup a day, in the morning, when I have time.  Depending on whether I'm making a cup for my wife as well, or just my whim, I either use a French press, a vacuum pot or a Clever coffee dripper.  Sometimes it depends on the particular bean of the day as some origins and roast levels suit themselves to different brewing methods.

This morning I made a cup for each of us in a French press.  It was an unintentional 3-bean blend that ended up being great!  Unintentional in that I didn't have enough Moka Kadir blend so I had to mix in a bit of Hawaii Ka’anapali DP Maui Moka 16 Screen that I just roasted last night, which is a little too soon after roasting.  I like to give at least 24-36 hours of rest after roasting before brewing.

So...it was 35 grams of the Moka Kadir (which was equal weights of Yemen Mokha Ismaili and Ethiopia Harar Longberry that I roasted on 08-09-11) and about 18 grams of the Hawaiian in the press pot with 750 grams of 190 degree water.  I let steep for a minute-and-a-half and then broke the crust and swizzled with a chopstick.  I plunged the coffee after 4 minutes total steep time.

So good!

Here are the key things you should have down. Not just for the cert, but for the ability to run a small network.

IPv4 Subnetting - Use the magic box, use binary acumen, use whatever you can to be able to translate something like 192.168.100.24/29 means a network that is 8 IPs wide, with 6 usable (realistically 5, if you use one on a router for a gateway).

Switching - Know the difference between spanning tree and rapid spanning tree, and how it eliminates loops in the network. There is a decision process for spanning tree that you must know.

Routing - Static routes, RIP (v1 and v2), OSPF, and EIGRP. Know classless vs classful addressing as well. A good basic level of knowledge of the routing decision process, and how it prevents loops (differs depending upon routing protocol).

Basic IOS navigation and security - What is the difference between password and secret? How do you set a disclaimer upon login? How do you setup a username and password?

Access Lists - Know how they work, and how to implement them. Standard access lists vs extended access lists. Wildcard subnet masks are a must.

Basic NAT - This is 3 commands that will ruin your day. I memorized them to pass my CCNA because it was a difficult concept.

Oh, and know the "are you paying attention" facts: What is the boot register for ROMMON, Password Reset, Normal Operation? What does show version tell me?

If you have any specific questions, let me know.
