2161  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Things you never want to do again in a game on: February 16, 2008, 12:53:23 AM
I never want to fight through a level, play through it a couple of times trying not to die, get to the boss with one life left, and die unexpectedly, then have to replay the level again to get back to the boss, only to die again.  (I'm looking at you, MegaMan ZX.  You broke my heart.)
2162  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Game over? Netflix goes Blu-Ray Exclusive (Walmart Too) on: February 15, 2008, 11:20:57 PM
We've had discussions about this at work.  I mean, people know what HD is.  They know what a DVD is.  You can put DVDs on the other side of an HD-DVD.  They're cheaper to make.  And Blu-Ray means nothing to the vast majority of users.  "Isn't that what killed the Crocodile Hunter?"

And yet, Blu-Ray is still going to win because of the marketing muscle behind it, and the fact that eventually you'll be able to get obscene amounts of data onto one of these discs, which isn't going to be a big deal for a while, from what I understand.

Really?  I think it looks cool.  Besides, the director is Doug Liman, and he usually does pretty good stuff, not amazing, but good.

My point? I don't really have one other than that there are so many ways to judge "best console ever" that it just means too many different things to too many different people for us to name just one.

The terrorists have already won. Tongue

For me, the Genesis was all right, don't get me wrong.  It had it's bright spots, but I just can't get over that murderer's row of great games the SNES had.  Like I said, different strokes and all.  Maybe we should make this a poll.

2171  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 08, 2008, 12:00:46 AM
Well, I think one of the tests of greatness is whether or not you can still play those games today.  The Sega Sports games were great for their day, but they don't hold a candle to modern sports games for their realism and depth.

Sonic holds up really well, though.  Especially their smoothies.

That's crazy!  That's an excellent job of parenting, I have to say.  How many moms would let their kids walk around by clicks?  That takes a lot of trust.
2176  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 07, 2008, 05:42:18 PM
I guess different strokes for different folks and all, but here's what I've found.  Sega Genesis handled sports games impeccably.  They have a few platform games, like the Sonic series, and Treasure's lineup of games.  There's some strategy, like the Shining Force series and Dune 2, and some RPGs, like Phantasy Star.

However, the sports games haven't aged well, and most of those really great games are really hard to find.  Super Nintendo, on the other hand, had a lot of great games that are still readily available.

On top of that, there are several SNES games that still grace 10 best lists.  Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, and Zelda: Link to the Past are easily all time greats.  To be sure, the Genesis has it's share of good games, but it never hit the peaks that the SNES did.

Of course, I didn't grow up with a Genesis.  Maybe if I would have, the story would be different.
2177  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 05, 2008, 08:36:05 PM
Genesis?  I kind of have to take issue with that.

I always ask Genesis fans, which games do you identify with?  I always have trouble picking out good Genesis games.
2178  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 05, 2008, 07:17:20 PM
Oh, and about the NES, there was some really good stuff for the NES.  However, going back and playing some of them now is almost painful.  There's some that will always be enduring classics (Super Mario series, Zelda, Mega Man 2, Bionic Commando, Kirby's Adventure), but I mean, even go back and play Metroid.  I love the Metroid series to death, but the original is unplayable.

I think we have some really rosy memories of the NES, but the fact is that a lot of these games were glorified tech demos.  They still didn't know how to use this technology.  They made a lot of horrible design decisions.  When the SNES rolled around, they got a lot of these problems ironed out.

Still, Blaster Master ruled!

So, in my book, the ranking would go thusly:

1) SNES
2) PS2
3) NES
2179  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 05, 2008, 07:12:46 PM
SNES all the way.  I mean, even their second-tier games like Donkey Kong Country were phenomenal.  It had it's share of stinkers, but some of the greatest games of all time were on the SNES.  Any list of greatest games that doesn't have Super Metroid in the top three is worthless.

Plus, when you consider that there were even more games that didn't make it to the States, or were hard to find, it just adds that much more value.  Terranigma, Secret of Mana 2, Bahamut Lagoon, E.V.O, Kirby Super Star, a bunch of these are either not in the States or just rare.

I love my PS2, don't get me wrong.  I would have to put the PS2 second, though, just because of the quality of the Super Nintendo's library.  When you have a great SNES game, it's a work of art.

What else is he supposed to do?

I feel for these guys, because what else can they do?  It's not like at this point they can open up a Dairy Queen and call it quits.  A performer performs.  Jerry Lee still has his voice at least.

It reminds me of a singer in Mexico named Jose Jose.  (Seriously, that's his name.)  For years, he was the preeminent singer in Mexico.  He destroyed his voice with alcohol, drugs, you name it.  He still puts on concerts even though he simply cannot sing anymore.  But what else can he do?  He does what he knows.
