2161  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 07, 2008, 05:42:18 PM
I guess different strokes for different folks and all, but here's what I've found.  Sega Genesis handled sports games impeccably.  They have a few platform games, like the Sonic series, and Treasure's lineup of games.  There's some strategy, like the Shining Force series and Dune 2, and some RPGs, like Phantasy Star.

However, the sports games haven't aged well, and most of those really great games are really hard to find.  Super Nintendo, on the other hand, had a lot of great games that are still readily available.

On top of that, there are several SNES games that still grace 10 best lists.  Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, and Zelda: Link to the Past are easily all time greats.  To be sure, the Genesis has it's share of good games, but it never hit the peaks that the SNES did.

Of course, I didn't grow up with a Genesis.  Maybe if I would have, the story would be different.

Genesis?  I kind of have to take issue with that.

I always ask Genesis fans, which games do you identify with?  I always have trouble picking out good Genesis games.
2163  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 05, 2008, 07:17:20 PM
Oh, and about the NES, there was some really good stuff for the NES.  However, going back and playing some of them now is almost painful.  There's some that will always be enduring classics (Super Mario series, Zelda, Mega Man 2, Bionic Commando, Kirby's Adventure), but I mean, even go back and play Metroid.  I love the Metroid series to death, but the original is unplayable.

I think we have some really rosy memories of the NES, but the fact is that a lot of these games were glorified tech demos.  They still didn't know how to use this technology.  They made a lot of horrible design decisions.  When the SNES rolled around, they got a lot of these problems ironed out.

Still, Blaster Master ruled!

So, in my book, the ranking would go thusly:

2) PS2
3) NES
2164  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 05, 2008, 07:12:46 PM
SNES all the way.  I mean, even their second-tier games like Donkey Kong Country were phenomenal.  It had it's share of stinkers, but some of the greatest games of all time were on the SNES.  Any list of greatest games that doesn't have Super Metroid in the top three is worthless.

Plus, when you consider that there were even more games that didn't make it to the States, or were hard to find, it just adds that much more value.  Terranigma, Secret of Mana 2, Bahamut Lagoon, E.V.O, Kirby Super Star, a bunch of these are either not in the States or just rare.

I love my PS2, don't get me wrong.  I would have to put the PS2 second, though, just because of the quality of the Super Nintendo's library.  When you have a great SNES game, it's a work of art.

I read about that couple in People. He got hit in Iraq and they got married afterwards. I think she broke it off. Rough for everyone involved, IMO.

You know, I was thinking about that yesterday and realized that the guy looks the Nemesis from Resident Evil!

I'm wondering if there's any rumors about the DS.  Is there anything that's supposed to come out this year?  When would we find that out?  I'm dying for new info, and the slate of summer games is leaving me blue right now.

I'm sorry, anyone else find it suspicious that "zeromage" has 1 post, and it's about a website that you've never heard of that has "wizard" in the title?  Zeromage...oldwizard?  Am I the only one who's being paranoid here?

What else is he supposed to do?

I feel for these guys, because what else can they do?  It's not like at this point they can open up a Dairy Queen and call it quits.  A performer performs.  Jerry Lee still has his voice at least.

It reminds me of a singer in Mexico named Jose Jose.  (Seriously, that's his name.)  For years, he was the preeminent singer in Mexico.  He destroyed his voice with alcohol, drugs, you name it.  He still puts on concerts even though he simply cannot sing anymore.  But what else can he do?  He does what he knows.

I hate when games (and gamers) confuse "OMG LOOK BOOBIES" with maturity. Not to say that b00bies are bad, or that they should not be ogled, but that it's fucking childish, ESPECIALLY when the boobies are polygons.

I just read your reply in Yahtzee's voice.  It makes everything funnier.

I love cats.  Something about a purring cat is way better than any dog.  Even if it's a nice dog, or it's happy with you, a purring cat still beats it hands-down.

I wasn't a huge fan of this one, but I don't know (or care) about Silent Hill, so I'm not really the target audience.  Still funny, though.

I find I'm getting more of my reviews from Zero Punctuation.

Cars was the only Pixar movie that didn't really grab me.  However, how they squeeze so much emotion out of these computer generated faces is uncanny.

In some circles, (admittedly demented circles) people said Peter O'Toole should be nominated for an Oscar for his work on Ratatouille.  Imagine his exact same lines transposed onto a character from Shrek.  Not the same effect, right?  Pixar is just so beyond everyone else in getting what makes a character relateable that it's not even funny.  They're not just shooting for movie tie-ins, or how can we make this marketable.  They're just focusing on "good."

2193  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: The Wire: The Final Season (spoilers inevitable) on: January 02, 2008, 11:20:04 PM
I've only seen half of Season 1, but I loved the dichotomy between Kima's relationship and Omar's relationship with the weird red-haired guy.  With one, you were titillated, and the other, you were uncomfortable (guy on guy kissing always makes me a little queasy, and they were really into it) (shudder supressors ON).

Also, I love how there's no "bad guy."  Everyone has a motivation, and they have good and bad qualities.  Like there's a cop who's a jerk, and they bust into this old lady's house looking for her grandson swearing up a storm, and before they leave, he goes to the old lady and apologizes.  She doesn't even move the whole time, just keeps knitting, and that tells more than any expository dialogue ever could.

Why didn't I finish watching Season 1?  icon_mad

I had Mario Kart DS, and I think it's far better than the Gamecube Mario Kart.  There's a lot to unlock and do.  Plus, you get to play as R.O.B.  I lent it to someone and they lost it.  I'm pissed.

I have these for trade:

Mega Man ZX
Super Mario 64 DS
Final Fantasy III
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime

Make me an offer for any DS games you might have for trade.  I love RPGs and platform games.

I love my DS.  I'm not surprised that it's sold as well as it has.  It's the Game Boy Advance +1.

Although, I admit that I thought Nintendo was absolutely insane for making it in the first place.  Shows how much I know.

2199  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: TMNT: The Movie on: December 27, 2007, 06:30:21 PM
I was vaguely interested in this movie, but never really made the jump.  If they hadn't already marketed the Turtles to death, maybe I wouldn't feel the deep shame involved in watching this movie.  As it is, I just can't justify it.

Especially because I just forced my wife to watch Talladega Nights.  (I love Will Ferrell.  She hates him.)  I don't think I have enough cred to get another risky movie rented right now.

All they're doing is blowing things up.  Now, I'm all for blowing things up, naturally.  But the great thing about Mythbusters is the buildup, and the personality of the cast.  No one has any personality whatsoever on this show.  I couldn't even tell you any of their names.  They're trying to protect a house from a bomb now.  That's useful.

Am I wrong on this?
