2161  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Fantasy Baseball - 2 More Players Needed! on: March 03, 2008, 04:57:50 PM
I advertised this over at OO, but there's people I like on both forums.  The OO Sluggers League III is starting up again, and normally Yankeeman does the honors of leading the league to glory.  However, since he's not around, I'm taking point and running it this year.

Is anyone interested?  All we ask is that you don't quit halfway through.

That's really good to hear.  I hope that it holds up as well as Melee, though.  It's easy to say i"Brawl rules" right off the bat, but how will it be 3,4,5 years later?  I mean, me and my friends still play Melee.  I guess time will tell.
2163  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Your Top Sports Allegiance on: March 03, 2008, 04:43:44 AM
I gotta say the Brewers.  If that Packers have 10 years of misery, so what?  We've dealt with it before, we'll do it again, and they've already won how many of them.  The Bucks?  Meh.  No one cares about the Bucks.  But a Brewers championship would be special.  The state would go nuts.

Pokemon games.

I hate cute games, childish dialog drives me insane (I'm looking at you, Advance Wars DS), and I figured the game mechanics would be too basic.

Love the Pokemon series.

Thank you!  I thought I was alone in this Pokewilderness.

Mets win the World Series, beating the Yankees in six games.

No.  The Yankees are nowhere near.  Joe Girardi had one good year in Florida with an extremely talented group of youngsters.  Now he has an old rotation, a locker room full of prima donnas, and 1 1/2 good relievers (Joba and Mariano).

The Mets?  Maybe.  Lastings is out of New York, and that'll help.  They have Johan.  Who knows?

2169  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo announces Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay And Play ($ for some WFC ga on: February 22, 2008, 09:56:40 PM
And the thing is that it doesn't seem like they're going to do bait-and-switch.  They're going to have it clearly marked on the package that this game is Pay-To-Play.  They're not going to release a game and then six months later say, "Hey!  We're charging you for it now!"

I have no problem with this.  All this stuff costs money, and if there's an MMO involved, well, that costs money too.  There's also talk of a Maple Story MMO on the DS, so there you have that.

Zelda games.  Seriously, any Zelda game I just can't get into, going back to the NES one.

I'm psyched for this year, as a Brewers fan.  If the Brewers wouldn't have collapsed down the stretch, they could have held off the surging Cubs.  Now that they have another year of experience under their belts, they'll know how to do that.

2173  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Things you never want to do again in a game on: February 16, 2008, 12:53:23 AM
I never want to fight through a level, play through it a couple of times trying not to die, get to the boss with one life left, and die unexpectedly, then have to replay the level again to get back to the boss, only to die again.  (I'm looking at you, MegaMan ZX.  You broke my heart.)
2174  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Game over? Netflix goes Blu-Ray Exclusive (Walmart Too) on: February 15, 2008, 11:20:57 PM
We've had discussions about this at work.  I mean, people know what HD is.  They know what a DVD is.  You can put DVDs on the other side of an HD-DVD.  They're cheaper to make.  And Blu-Ray means nothing to the vast majority of users.  "Isn't that what killed the Crocodile Hunter?"

And yet, Blu-Ray is still going to win because of the marketing muscle behind it, and the fact that eventually you'll be able to get obscene amounts of data onto one of these discs, which isn't going to be a big deal for a while, from what I understand.

My point? I don't really have one other than that there are so many ways to judge "best console ever" that it just means too many different things to too many different people for us to name just one.

The terrorists have already won. Tongue

For me, the Genesis was all right, don't get me wrong.  It had it's bright spots, but I just can't get over that murderer's row of great games the SNES had.  Like I said, different strokes and all.  Maybe we should make this a poll.

2183  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 08, 2008, 12:00:46 AM
Well, I think one of the tests of greatness is whether or not you can still play those games today.  The Sega Sports games were great for their day, but they don't hold a candle to modern sports games for their realism and depth.

Sonic holds up really well, though.  Especially their smoothies.

That's crazy!  That's an excellent job of parenting, I have to say.  How many moms would let their kids walk around by clicks?  That takes a lot of trust.
2188  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 07, 2008, 05:42:18 PM
I guess different strokes for different folks and all, but here's what I've found.  Sega Genesis handled sports games impeccably.  They have a few platform games, like the Sonic series, and Treasure's lineup of games.  There's some strategy, like the Shining Force series and Dune 2, and some RPGs, like Phantasy Star.

However, the sports games haven't aged well, and most of those really great games are really hard to find.  Super Nintendo, on the other hand, had a lot of great games that are still readily available.

On top of that, there are several SNES games that still grace 10 best lists.  Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, and Zelda: Link to the Past are easily all time greats.  To be sure, the Genesis has it's share of good games, but it never hit the peaks that the SNES did.

Of course, I didn't grow up with a Genesis.  Maybe if I would have, the story would be different.
2189  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 05, 2008, 08:36:05 PM
Genesis?  I kind of have to take issue with that.

I always ask Genesis fans, which games do you identify with?  I always have trouble picking out good Genesis games.
2190  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 05, 2008, 07:17:20 PM
Oh, and about the NES, there was some really good stuff for the NES.  However, going back and playing some of them now is almost painful.  There's some that will always be enduring classics (Super Mario series, Zelda, Mega Man 2, Bionic Commando, Kirby's Adventure), but I mean, even go back and play Metroid.  I love the Metroid series to death, but the original is unplayable.

I think we have some really rosy memories of the NES, but the fact is that a lot of these games were glorified tech demos.  They still didn't know how to use this technology.  They made a lot of horrible design decisions.  When the SNES rolled around, they got a lot of these problems ironed out.

Still, Blaster Master ruled!

So, in my book, the ranking would go thusly:

1) SNES
2) PS2
3) NES
2191  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Is the SNES the Best Game Console Ever? on: February 05, 2008, 07:12:46 PM
SNES all the way.  I mean, even their second-tier games like Donkey Kong Country were phenomenal.  It had it's share of stinkers, but some of the greatest games of all time were on the SNES.  Any list of greatest games that doesn't have Super Metroid in the top three is worthless.

Plus, when you consider that there were even more games that didn't make it to the States, or were hard to find, it just adds that much more value.  Terranigma, Secret of Mana 2, Bahamut Lagoon, E.V.O, Kirby Super Star, a bunch of these are either not in the States or just rare.

I love my PS2, don't get me wrong.  I would have to put the PS2 second, though, just because of the quality of the Super Nintendo's library.  When you have a great SNES game, it's a work of art.
