6681  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragonshard Demo this week! on: July 12, 2005, 06:35:16 PM
Any word on a single-player demo?
6682  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / EB Shipping Question on: July 12, 2005, 07:33:05 AM
I'm planning to order Flipnic for PS2 from, but I'm going to be out of town next week, and will probably be gone when the game arrives.  I'm having my mail held, so if they use regular mail, I'll be sure to get it, but their website says they also use FedEx and UPS.  Anyone know what FedEx and UPS do when they try to deliver a package and no one is home?
6683  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Kingdom Hearts II Trailer! on: July 12, 2005, 07:27:29 AM
Cool.  What appears to be the gummy ship certainly seems much-improved.
6684  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga Impressions! (pg. 2) on: July 11, 2005, 11:42:48 PM
Not that this does you any good now, but, after getting taken to the Citadel, you could have left the area, gone back to your base, and healed up/shopped/etc.  I've only run into one area that I couldn't leave and go back to my base, and that was storyline-dictated.
The combat can be challenging, but there are several things that make it easier.  First, healing is cheap.  Dia only costs about 3 MP, and even at level 24, still heals a big chunk of my characters' HP.  Argilla should have a ton of MP, and MP restoring items are cheap.  Also, areas with HP restoring stations are great for levelling-up without risk.  If worse comes to worst, you can always use the large karma terminals to teleport back to the entrance, return to your base to shop/heal, and then come back.
At the point I am now, enemies are doing quite a bit of damage to my characters, and they occasionally die, but as long as I have plenty of MP restoring and Dis- items, I can pretty much heal to full strength after every battle if I have to.  Also, money is easy to get.  Enemies give quite a bit, and tracking down the Cells nets me several thousand for each one.  So, while individual battles remain challenging, as long as you can survive each one, you'll be fine.

A word of warning, though.  The last boss at the end of the Citadel can be very hard if you don't have the Void Expel spell.  There's a great cut-scene after the battle, though, so it's definitely worth it.  I hope you stick with it.
6685  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Might & Magic 6 anything I should know? on: July 10, 2005, 06:06:20 AM
It's been awhile, but I don't remember having problems with clearing stuff out.  There's some stuff you have to go back for, but you should be able to handle most things in an area before you move on to the next.  There should pretty much always be a quest in your quest log that you can handle at your level.  Again, it's been years since I played it, but I don't remember anything like what you're describing.
6686  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Jade Empire - Official Impressions on: July 09, 2005, 10:50:56 AM
The trial quest on Manaan was one of my favorite moments in KoTOR.  I loved the moral dilemma set up when you finally learned the truth.  I thought about my final choice for quite awhile, more because it was an interesting choice than for what I was going to get game-wise.

I'm loving Jade Empire.  It seems too much like KoTOR at first, but after leaving the first town, the game world really starts to show its uniqueness.  It's also, at times, a very beautiful game - from the serenity of the sunset in Tien's Landing to the creepiness of the forest.  It's a big step up from the mostly bland visuals of KoTOR.
6687  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I'm trying to find a Diablo-esque clone .... on: July 08, 2005, 11:32:44 PM
In Sacred, the loot is randomized, the monster placement seems somewhat random, but the maps are premade.  It doesn't have a hub setup like Diablo 2, as it's all one big, premade world.

"I do have one big question on Dungeon Siege two: One of the screen shots I saw for the skills screen for the fighter, all the skills were simply percentage increases to damge/hit/speed/etc. Does your fighter learn new attacks, or is he stuck with 'i hit things, and that's all I'll ever do' a la DS?"
From what I've read, I think there are both.  You can have melee powers that are different types of attacks, and you also have passive skills that boost your abilities.  It looks kind of like WoW's skills and talents system.
6688  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any interest in Killer 7? on: July 08, 2005, 06:27:10 AM
1Up gave it 8.4 and Gamespy 2.5/5.
6689  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I'm trying to find a Diablo-esque clone .... on: July 08, 2005, 06:24:22 AM
Sacred certainly has its faults, but I think it's a solid game and one of the better Diablo-style games.  The demo is large, and should give anyone considering buying the game a very good idea of what to expect in the final version.  FATE is a lot more fun, but it's also much simpler in scope and gameplay.
6690  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I'm trying to find a Diablo-esque clone .... on: July 08, 2005, 01:54:27 AM
I didn't find Sacred to play anything like Dungeon Siege.  You only control one character, and all the characters (even melee ones) have many skills to use.  It doesn't play quite as well as Diablo 2, but the setup is basically the same, apart from the randomness.  Sacred also has a gigantic world to explore, which is something you don't see too often in action-RPGs.
6691  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I'm trying to find a Diablo-esque clone .... on: July 07, 2005, 11:05:03 PM
It definitely sounds like Sacred.  The armor you're describing is the Seraphim's wings.
6692  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Big Lots restock 7/5..YMMV on: July 07, 2005, 11:01:31 PM
I've never seen a console game at Big Lots - only PC.
6693  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Might & Magic 6 anything I should know? on: July 07, 2005, 12:52:23 AM
You should be able to set one spell for each character as a quick spell, and then cast it by hitting one of the keys.
6694  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any interest in Killer 7? on: July 07, 2005, 12:37:25 AM
GamePro gave it 1.5/5, but their reviews are all over the place when compared to other sites.
6695  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Might & Magic 6 anything I should know? on: July 06, 2005, 11:07:35 PM
MM6 was great fun, and extremely long.  My characters were somthing like level 110 by the time I finished, and I'm sure I put well over 100 hours into it.
6696  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Some more Target deals (?) on: July 06, 2005, 11:03:21 PM
My Target had Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich for $20 on clearance.
6697  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Riviera Impressions on: July 06, 2005, 06:34:09 PM
Sting also did the Evolution games for the Dreamcast (rereleased as Evolution Worlds on the Gamecube), but from what I played of them, they are nowhere near as good as Riviera.
6698  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Any interest in Killer 7? on: July 06, 2005, 06:30:16 PM
IGN gave it 8.1.
6699  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Circuit City Clearance 9.99 games on: July 06, 2005, 07:14:43 AM
Baten Kaitos is a steal for $10.  It's one of the most beautiful games I've ever played, and has a great soundtrack too.
6700  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Riviera Impressions on: July 02, 2005, 01:02:59 AM
Anyone else pick this up?  I was on the fence, but I figured a new GBA game from Atlus is a good recipe for a game getting rare quickly, so I bought it along with Atelier Iris.  I'm glad I did.  It's hard to describe the game's appeal, though.  It has many elements of traditional RPGs, but it doesn't play like anything else, except for perhaps Unlimited Saga.  Fortunately, it does right what Unlimited Saga did horribly wrong.  The game is about choices - deciding what to do with your limited points, deciding what items to take into battle, etc.
The graphics are nice, especially the character portraits, the music is solid, and the smattering of voice acting adds a little to the game.  It's definitely a deliberate, slowly-paced game (although it's broken into small chunks so that it seems to move fast).  The game is hard to describe, but fun and addicting to play.

Secret of The Silver Earring is very good, especially if you like mysteries/detective stories.
6702  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana Impressies on: July 01, 2005, 09:28:46 AM
I'm really enjoying it.  I love the hand-drawn art style, and I'm having fun collecting everything I can find.  It looks like there are a lot of new abilities you gain during the game that will enable you to get items that are out of reach at the beginning.  It's definitely not a game for everyone, but the combination of traditional RPG and the item synthesis is a perfect fit for what I like in games.
6703  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana Impressies on: June 30, 2005, 09:24:38 AM
At the risk of breaking tradition, here are my impressions from about 45 minutes of playing -
The manual is thin - only 16 pages and black and white, but it looks like there will be in-game tutorials for everything, so it shouldn't matter.  The game looks beautiful, full of color and detail, and definitely more high-res looking than most 2D RPGs, such as Disgaea.  The voice acting is definitely solid, and the translation is looking good, too.  I haven't done much yet - a few battles, a few tutorials, and smashing half the town to smithereens to get mana slywink  If an old-school 2D RPG with a heavy dose of item creation sounds good to you, then it looks like the game will definitely fit the bill.  I can't wait to play some more tomorrow.

I also picked up Riviera, and was surprised I hadn't realized earlier that this is probably the first time in many years when two non-remake 2D RPGs were released on the same day.  I'll put up some impressions of Riviera tomorrow, as I haven't opened it yet.

6705  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suggest me some of the best RPGS out there... on: June 28, 2005, 06:50:45 AM
I don't know how long it would take to rush through Twilight of the Spirits, but it's by no means a short game.  I'm slower than most people when playing RPGs, but I'm over 70 hours with ToTS and just now nearing the end.  I much prefer the Arc the Lad-type game where you have your traditional RPG exploration combined with tactical battles.  Unfortunately this is pretty rare.  You might want to track down the Arc the Lad Collection for the PSOne, which  includes Arc 1-3.  Arc 2 and 3 both play like ToTS, where you can freely explore, and their combat is even more tactical than in ToTS.
6706  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The reviews are coming in for Riviera on: June 27, 2005, 11:33:26 PM
The game looks interesting, but there are many things that look like they might make the game frustrating.  I'm really hoping someone posts a long, informative review before Wednesday.
6707  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Upcoming Games--- 06/27/05 on: June 27, 2005, 11:24:49 PM
"Well, excuse me for not realizing we have two RPGs/Tactical RPGs this week."
By tactical RPGs, do you mean games like Disgaea?  Neither Atelier Iris nor Riviera really fit that description.  Both are more-or-less traditional RPGs, at least in terms of battles.
6708  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lunar : Dragon Song coming to DS on: June 27, 2005, 07:38:13 AM
The Nintendo Power article also mentioned that the next Lunar game will most likely tell the story of the four heroes mentioned in the first game, something that fans have wanted for a long time.

I'm at over 90 hours with DW7, and I think I'm about halfway through.  It's definitely the Baldur's Gate 2/Might & Magic 6 of the console world.
6710  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: June 27, 2005, 12:34:50 AM
Magna Carta is due out Winter 2005, so I would assume that means December.  RPGamer has some screenshots here.
6711  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: June 26, 2005, 09:26:08 AM
I love systems like the Judgment Ring, and wish more games would use them.  It's a nice compromise between turn-based and real-time and helps alleviate the tedium of fighting so many battles.  I'm really looking forward to hearing more about Magna Carta, which is supposed to combine a Judgment Ring type system with character movement on the battlefield.
6712  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: June 26, 2005, 06:04:37 AM
"A 15-year old lead character? An 8 year old pirate captain? C'mon, now."
The first two games also featured child/teen characters - Halley in the first game, and Anastasia in Covenant.  The developers have a way of taking what sound like ridiculuous character concepts and making them work.  Also, although Johnny is the character you play as, the story seems to revolve more around Shania - she's the one who is able to change forms, rather than the main character.
6713  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: June 25, 2005, 07:51:44 AM
RPGamer has some new info and scans for the game.  Someone better announce a US release soon, or someone's going to get hurt.

6715  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Your Nintendo Revolution Controller rumor for the day.... on: June 22, 2005, 11:35:22 PM
If these are accurate, I would assume they lock into some sort of base, so you can switch out which components you have in which slot.  Some company made a controller like this, where you can switch out different parts to make different button/stick arrangements.
6716  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FATE Released. (Think Diablo 1 + Nethack. But pretty.) on: June 22, 2005, 11:31:57 PM
On their forums, I read that it's a bad idea to keep trying a code that isn't working, as it can use up your unlocks.  I'd contact them and let them sort it out before trying the code again.
6717  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I don't understand the acceptance of the PSP exploits on: June 22, 2005, 10:12:03 PM
"Square Enix doesn't make money off Chrono Trigger carts anymore. It isn't officially available anywhere for current systems"
You can still find Final Fantasy Chronicles (which includes Chrono Trigger) for the PSOne in many used game stores, and it can be played on the PS2.

"its like file sharing - no one had a problem with it until artists and courts got involved"
It was always illegal, regardless of whether anyone was doing anything to stop it.
6718  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grandia 3 - beautful new shots on: June 19, 2005, 08:10:52 AM
RPGamer has some beautiful new shots of Grandia 3 here.  I can't see any reason why Square Enix wouldn't bring this to the US, so hopefully they won't wait too much longer before an official announcement.

6719  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / RPG News - Magna Carta and Riviera on: June 19, 2005, 07:37:43 AM
"please! - either really do up the english voicework right, or just leave it as is with subtitles"

Judging by past Atlus games like Disgaea and Digital Devil Saga, the voice work should be excellent.
