6561  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / First Suikoden Tactics Screens on: August 19, 2005, 01:41:03 AM
IGN has some impressions here.  I'm not the biggest fan of SRPGs, but this one sounds good and I'm a big fan of the Suikoden series.  It's odd that they chose to base the game around the least popular game in the series, especially since they're redoing the graphics instead of using the same ones as in Suikoden 4.
6562  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 Pre-Release Thread on: August 18, 2005, 10:07:36 AM
If MS had been upfront and honest about the two versions, then I don't think people would have minded anywhere near as much.  $400 isn't unreasonable, but for some reason, MS chose to be deceptive and pull this unpleasant surprise out of nowhere, and they shouldn't be surprised that it's blown up in their faces.  Also, the $300 version seems to serve no purpose other than to allow them to say they have a $300 console.  If $300 actually got you a useable console, then it would be an option.  It won't though, unless you plan to finish all your games in one sitting.  The $300 option is actually $340 with the required memory card, and that makes it an terrible deal.

That's good news for all the people who plan to buy the $300 version.  All 3 of them slywink
6564  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II Review is UP on: August 17, 2005, 06:43:38 PM
"you do have to refight through all the mobs you killed (as the save doesn't save the world state itself). "
Did they change this from the demo?  In the demo, most enemies stayed dead when you reloaded.  They do respawn, but slowly, so when running back through an area, there were only a few enemies, as opposed to the large numbers the first time through.
6565  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 Pre-Release Thread on: August 17, 2005, 06:39:16 PM
"Now, though, it feels like we're going backwards again."
My thoughts exactly.  Other than better graphics, this next generation of consoles seems like a step backwards.  Hard drives and wireless controllers should have been the standard for all 3 for the next-generation, yet none of them will have the hard drive as standard and XBox 360 won't even have a wireless controller standard.

I don't get why Microsoft chose to be misleading, even as recently as the completely wrong interview with J. Allard in this month's Game Informer.  They should have been upfront about the two versions all along, rather than just announcing it out of the blue.  They had to know this would generate a mostly negative reaction, so why compound that by misleading people for months?  It makes no sense.

Buying the $300 version doesn't make sense either.  If you include the price of the required memory card, you're only $60 away from getting over 30 times the storage space and a wireless controller.  One card probably wouldn't even be enough, given that KoTOR saves were too big too fit on an 8 MB card.

Well, Sony and Microsoft keeps making mistakes left and right regarding their next-gen consoles.  I can't wait to see how Nintendo screws up slywink
6566  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Zelda delayed :( on: August 17, 2005, 05:42:49 AM
If you mean Metroid Prime 2, EB has it for $30 used, and I think I saw it at Blockbuster for $20-$25.
6567  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Man, Beyond Good & Evil really is fantastic! on: August 17, 2005, 05:35:49 AM
Although much different in tone, the game Primal reminded me quite a bit of BG&E.  Both star a female protagonist with a non-human sidekick, although Primal is much more serious.  They also both have action/fighting mixed with exploration and puzzles, and neither are afraid to let their characters show some emotions.  It's another great game that got overshadowed by other games and can be found dirt cheap now.

Also, the designer of BG&E, Michel Ancel, is doing the new King Kong game, which, if nothing else, will at least get more exposure.
6568  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo DS : How many stuck/dead pixels do you have on: August 16, 2005, 06:37:23 PM
The DS is dropping to $129.99.  With Lunar and Mario & Luigi 2 coming out, it's getting harder and harder to resist.

6570  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Need an action rpg recommendation for Xbox on: August 16, 2005, 06:09:49 AM
X-Men Legends, Bard's Tale, and Fallout : Brotherhood of Steel are the XBox games most similar to DA2, other than DA1.  Other than being overly difficult, I really liked the LoTR action games.  They have amazing production values, and are lots of fun.  I just picked up Demon Stone (for $10 at the Toys R Us clearance) yesterday, and it's supposed to be quite a bit easier, so I think I'll really enjoy it.

As for DA1, it's as much fun as DA2, but is shorter, has only 3 character types, no weapon customization, and you can't use the trigger to set up quick spells/abilities.  I think the graphics are actually better in the first game, though.  It's definitely worth playing if you enjoy the sequel.

Gamestop still has it listed for $30, but they also have Dungeon Siege 2 still incorrectly listed for next week.  Either they're not on the ball updating their website, or they know something other stores don't.

6573  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / No one talking about Generation of Chaos? on: August 16, 2005, 01:38:20 AM
There was a preview in the last Game Informer, and it sounds like a very ambitious game.  There's a strategy layer that the article compares to Civilization, with cities, trading, and even diplomacy, in addition to the large battles.  Also, you can play as several different factions, each with their own storyline and characters.
6574  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vote for which type of Bioware game you want next! on: August 16, 2005, 01:35:07 AM
Given the great job they did creating the world of Jade Empire, I'm glad their next game is going to be set in another universe of their creation.  I do hope they'll do a sequel to Jade Empire someday, even though they're not keen on sequels.
6575  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Toys R Us Clearance on: August 15, 2005, 03:15:53 AM
I can't remember many, but they had Mario Golf Advance for $17.50, R-Type Final for PS2 for $5, Demon Stone for XBox for $15, and Dr3ver for $10.

"Wrath Unleashed (the description of an updated 'Archon' intrigued me), Drakenguard, and Tsugunai: Atonement were all basically terrible."
A local used game store has had a copy of Tsugunai for $10 for a long time, and it keeps calling out to me to take it home slywink  I know it got mediocre reviews, but I love timing-based RPG battles, a la Shadow Hearts.  What didn't you like about it?
6578  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Toys R Us Clearance on: August 14, 2005, 10:50:57 PM
Toys R Us is having a big store-wide 50% off clearance, and there are some video and PC games included.  I picked up Demon Stone for PS2 for $10, and there were quite a few others marked down as well.

SquareEnix hasn't officially announced a US release, but I'd say it's a sure thing.  It will probably be released in the US either next spring or summer.
6580  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sigma Star Saga on: August 14, 2005, 09:42:36 AM
I've got in pre-ordered.  As far as the RPG elements, it plays like a standard action-RPG.  You traverse different planets, attacking enemies with your gun, and get pulled into random battles.  When you trigger a random battle, you enter a side-scrolling space shooter segment.  Killing enemy ships gets you experience, but I'm not sure if it's your ships or your character that you level-up with the experience.  I love RPG/other genre hybrids, and early reviews are very positive.  With this and Dungeon Siege 2, it's going to be a very fun week for me smile
6581  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 14, 2005, 07:05:00 AM
"I mean, if I read the Gamespot review right, DS2 stays trivial, regardless of what difficulty you play it on."
To me, it sounded like they didn't actually play on the harder difficulties, as the comments about them are very general.  (This isn't a criticism of the review, as I don't think you'd have to do so to provide a proper review of the game.)  However, other articles I've read about the game make it sound rather difficult, and I've already died a few times in the demo after getting overwhelmed by enemies.

The depth in Diablo 2 comes about due to the differing enemies - different attack styles, resistances, etc.  DS2 has all these things, and more.  Each character doesn't have as many skills as a single character in D2, but you're controlling 4-6, rather than 1.  It remains to be seen in DS2 becomes difficult enough to necessitate using these as D2 does in the harder difficulty levels, but the potential is certainly there.
6582  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Hold the Phones guys, Xbox 360 Hard Drive not included? on: August 13, 2005, 04:09:07 AM
From the Game Informer interview, it sounds like having two versions is pretty much a done deal; it's only a matter of when they do it.  They've told developers not to count on the hard drive always being there.  I don't really see what the appeal of a non-hard drive version would be, though.  Unless it's much less expensive (more than $50 cheaper), what would be the point?  You'd have to buy some sort of memory for it, presumably at $20-$30 that would hold a fraction of the amount of data of the hard drive.
6583  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 13, 2005, 01:25:17 AM
"The only part that puzzles me is that bit about teleporting back to town- that's what pets are for, hauling your crap so you don't need to go back to town."
It looks like pets are more like regular party members in DS2 rather than just for transporting your gear.  Since they count toward your four-member party limit, you'll probably want them around for every battle.  I'd imagine you still can send them back to town if you want, though.
6584  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Untold Legends 2 on: August 13, 2005, 12:03:29 AM
The new Game Informer has a preview of the sequel to the PSP's Untold Legends.  It's called Warrior's Code, and will feature a new, more distinctive art style, 5 character classes, each with a weapon specific to them and 15 skills, and premade levels, rather than the randomly-generated ones of the first game.  RPGamer also has the details here.
6585  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 12, 2005, 11:10:16 PM
I assume that comment is referring to the fact that they thought the game was easy, not that you don't have options for fighting.  From what I've seen of the demo, there's at least as much potential for strategy in DS2 as in Diablo 2 - you have four characters, enemies with different methods of attacking, resistances, and stats, and even "hates" where enemies will target your players for using potions or skills in their sight.  DS2 even has the little health bar over the enemy, listing its weakness, similar to the Diablo games.  I would assume you need to use more strategy on the harder levels.
6586  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest 8 site launched on: August 12, 2005, 06:29:17 AM
It's hard to explain the appeal of Dragon Quest.  The battles are pretty simplistic, as are the stories.  The first four games had only bare-bones characters.   The games are just fun to play, though.  I've been replaying the Gameboy remakes of the original games, and they're still fun to play today, despite their simplicity.

As for DQ8, the main draw is the large, explorable world  - something that fewer and fewer modern RPGs have, although they seem to be making a comeback.  Also, the quest is long, and the graphics feature great cel-shading, similar to Dark Cloud 2 from the same developer.  Personally, I prefer the story-based FF games, but Dragon Quest was my first RPG and will always be special to me.

There's a preview at 1Up that explains the new real-time action mode in the game.

6591  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest 8 site launched on: August 10, 2005, 07:03:32 PM
SquareEnix has launched a teaser site for Dragon Quest 8 here.  All it features now is the E3 trailer, though.  They've also launched a fansite - Slime Knights, where you can earn mini-medals toward getting exclusive movies and screenshots, and even actual DQ merchandise.  I even made my first bit of fanart to get some points - Here it is in all its MSPaint glory slywink

It looks like SquareEnix is going all out with the marketing, including a mall tour, that is, alas, not coming anywhere near me.
6592  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Tales of Legendia - Great soundtrack & trailer inside on: August 10, 2005, 06:59:59 PM
Yes - the US release is set for early next year.  I wish we were getting Tales of Rebirth as well, but I guess that's not going to happen.  Tales of The Abyss is 3D, so hopefully, that will get a US release as well.
6593  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 unofficially confirmed for US release on: August 10, 2005, 05:27:30 AM
"Let's hope it isn't Working Designs. Otherwise you can look forward to seeing it released around the same time as the PS3. "
You mean PS4, don't you? slywink

I'm going to guess the publisher will be Atlus.  The game is a good fit for them - combining the two things they're known for - dark, serious games and "wacky" games.  Plus, their last announced game (Magna Carta) comes out in November/December, so they have nothing announced for next year yet.  Presumably, Devil Summoner will be coming to the US (interestingly enough, set in a similar time period to Shadow Hearts), but that leaves the rest of the year free.  Namco is also a possibility, as they continued the Arc the Lad series by bringing End of Darkness to the US.  That series has a pretty small fanbase, so they might be willing to take on the SH series.  They already have Tales of Legendia coming in spring, and possibly Tales of the Abyss in the fall, so SH might be a good summer release for them.

It is - it's coming out in November.  I can't wait!
6595  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 unofficially confirmed for US release on: August 09, 2005, 09:38:28 PM

6596  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dead or Alive and Mortal Combat questions on: August 09, 2005, 07:14:26 PM
MK : Deception has a ton of single-player kontent.  There's the standard arkade mode, a pretty bland story mode that's supposed to take upwards of 20-30 hours, 400 items to unlock, as well as full-fledged minigames Chess Kombat (like chess with fighting MK pieces) and Puzzle Kombat, a Tetris-style game.
6597  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It's August: 2005 nearly 3/4 over: What's your GOTY? on: August 09, 2005, 07:09:21 PM
Right now, I'd say either Jade Empire or Digital Devil Saga.  I haven't finished either, so it depends on how they hold up.  Come December, it will probably be either Dragon Quest 8 or Digital Devil Saga 2.
6598  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 unofficially confirmed for US release on: August 09, 2005, 07:01:28 PM
A representative from Midway, who decided to pass on localizing Shadow Hearts 3, posted this at the GameFAQs message board -
SH3 WILL get released here in NA (and also most likely in Europe as well), but just not by Midway. Some other company has picked this title up and I'm sure they will do a great job localizing it.

I'm pretty sure this is legit, given the other posts made by this person.  Hopefully, we'll get official confirmation soon.
6599  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dead or Alive and Mortal Combat questions on: August 09, 2005, 06:09:27 AM
I've tried a lot of fighting games, and Mortal Kombat is definitely one of the simplest and easy to get into.  Generally, in the tutorials going over the characters' moves, I can get them to work on the first few tries.  Also, I wouldn't let anyone from Midway see your post - If they catch anyone spelling kombat with a "c", they send out their goon squad to teach them a lesson slywink
