6521  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Phantasy Star Universe details on: April 08, 2005, 08:50:23 AM
IGN has some details and the confirmation that Phantasy Star Universe will be released in the US (I really wish Square Enix were this forthcoming with their US release confirmations.)  Also, the rumors were right - the game will have both an offline, story-driven mode, as well as an online mode, presumably similar to the PSO games.
6522  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The anything BUT Jade Empire discussion thread on: April 08, 2005, 05:56:34 AM
Bioware has definitely dropped hints about a PC release, but haven't officially confirmed anything.
6523  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kingdom Hearts- Any Way to Disable Subtitles? on: April 08, 2005, 05:53:36 AM
No, and I find it very annoying as well.  Xenosaga is the same way, as well as Digital Devil Saga.  I have to avert my eyes from the bottom of the screen to avoid reading the subtitles before they're spoken.  I got used to it eventually, but I have no idea why there isn't an option to shut them off like there is in pretty much every other game.
6524  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What has happened to Square? on: April 08, 2005, 05:51:42 AM
There was a DQ5 remake released in Japan, and I think it's possible that it will be released on the PS2 or the PSP in the US someday.  DQ4 is kind of stuck in-between, as its PSOne remake was cancelled for the US when the company localizing it went out of business.  It would be a good fit for the DS.  If DQ8 is as successful as I think it will be, I'm sure Square Enix won't let the previous entries go to waste, especially given the long gaps between each DQ release.
6525  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga Impressions! (pg. 2) on: April 07, 2005, 06:59:19 PM
I played for about an hour last night, and I'm really enjoying it.  The opening cutscene is incredible, and the cool art style looks even better in motion than in screenshots.  The great dungeon automapping returns from Nocturne, and really helps in exploring the dungeon areas.  The voice acting is good, too, and thankfully, they appear to be unknown actors.  It looks like companies have finally realized there are other good voice actors in the world other than the usual suspects (Jennifer Hale, Cam Clarke, etc.)  They're very good at what they do, but it's distracting hearing the same voices in every game.
6526  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga Impressions! (pg. 2) on: April 07, 2005, 07:47:46 AM
Double Jump Books, who have done strategy guides for other Atlus games, passed on doing one for DDS, so it looks like there isn't going to be one.  There are a few FAQs at GameFAQs though.
6527  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chrono Trigger 3? on: April 06, 2005, 10:10:18 PM
I'm guessing it's a late April Fools joke, or simply a fake.  I know Square Enix said they intend to release 1 game a month, but FF12, Kingdom Hearts 2, Grandia 3, and Chrono 3 all in one year seems like too much.  I hope it's true, but I doubt it is, especially since they just unveiled Grandia 3.
6528  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga Impressions! (pg. 2) on: April 06, 2005, 06:34:35 AM
We're on the second page already, with no impressions of the actual game.  Should we just make this the official impressions thread?  biggrin
6529  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga Impressions! (pg. 2) on: April 05, 2005, 11:41:38 PM
From what I've heard, DDS is good, but DDS2 is great.
6530  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / More Japanese RPGs coming to America on: April 05, 2005, 07:27:59 AM
According to RPGamer, Nippon Ichi America is teaming with the Japanese company Idea Factory to bring some of its previously Japan-only RPGs to the US.  I'm not familiar with the company or its games, but more RPGs is always good news to me smile
6531  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga Impressions! (pg. 2) on: April 05, 2005, 07:07:34 AM
RPGFan has posted their review.  I like this quote -
"Digital Devil Saga is like Final Fantasy X, but the characters eat each other." slywink
I'll post some impressions when I get it Wednesday.
6532  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / 10.5 on: April 05, 2005, 06:56:31 AM
6533  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Doom 3 Impressions on: April 04, 2005, 11:14:38 AM
It sounds crazy to me since I can't play FPS games on consoles to save my life, but I know people who actually prefer console controllers to the mouse and keyboard setup.
6534  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS2 platformers rejoice! Ratchet 4, Jak X, and Sly 3! on: April 04, 2005, 12:11:07 AM
"I gotta get me a PS2 ..... unless the PS3 is for sure backwards compatable."
It is - with both PS2 and PSOne.
6535  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS2 platformers rejoice! Ratchet 4, Jak X, and Sly 3! on: April 03, 2005, 10:36:53 AM
"Supposedly Insomniac is already at work on a major FPS for PS3"
I really hope that's not true.  I'm okay with FPS games on the PC, but I find console FPS games pretty much unplayable.
6536  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / ape escape on the loose on: April 02, 2005, 04:12:49 AM
I haven't played this version, but in the other Ape Escapes, there were some monkeys who you couldn't get until you got a certain gadget later in the game.
6537  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / The Marshall Show...er... Alias 3/30 on: March 31, 2005, 08:01:29 AM
I've never really liked Marshall, but he's really grown on me this season, for some reason.
6538  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Flipnic, a pinball adventure, coming to PS2 on: March 31, 2005, 07:55:18 AM
Namco announced that they will be releasing Flipnic : Ultimate Pinball for the PS2 this summer, according to Worthplaying.  It sounds most like Adventure Pinball, which I really liked.  That makes the third game that Namco has announced that sound really cool to me - Sigma Star Saga, a side-scrolling space shooter/RPG, the XCom-like Rebelstar Tactical Command, and now this.
6539  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rebelstar Tactical Command coming to GBA on: March 30, 2005, 10:09:46 PM
Namco has announced a turn-based strategy RPG for the GBA called Rebelstar Tactical Command.  Worthplaying has details and screenshots.

6540  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PSP] Tony Hawk on: March 30, 2005, 07:45:51 PM
Ports is the wrong word, but most of the launch titles are at least heavily based on existing games, rather than full-blown original creations like Lumines and Untold Legends.
6541  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grandia 3 coming! on: March 30, 2005, 07:35:24 PM
It is indeed Grandia 3, and the screenshots look beautiful.  The battle system appears similar, as the screenshots show a circular gauge like the one in Xtreme.  Hopefully, we'll get a translation of the article soon.
6542  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grandia 3 coming! on: March 30, 2005, 09:26:22 AM
Last week, the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu Weekly had a teaser that they would have news of a major RPG from Square Enix this week.  According to a post at GameFAQs the game in question is Grandia 3!  There should be some confirmation tomorrow, presuming this is true.
6543  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FF 7 on PSP? on: March 30, 2005, 08:00:52 AM
"Square Enix is working on an action-RPG set in the FF7 world called Crisis Core."
To reply to my own post slywink I meant to add that Crisis Core is for the PSP.
6544  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PSP] Tony Hawk on: March 30, 2005, 02:39:03 AM
"On a side rant, does it bother anyone else that some of these PSP games are selling for $50?"
I was shocked when I saw that PSP games were going to sell for $50.  It seems ridiculous to me, especially since many of the launch titles are simply ports of existing games.
6545  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FF 7 on PSP? on: March 30, 2005, 02:33:38 AM
Square Enix is working on an action-RPG set in the FF7 world called Crisis Core.
6546  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Messed up PS2 disc - Any suggestions? on: March 28, 2005, 09:14:41 AM
Boiling DVDs only helps with certain problems.  I wouldn't take the chance that the problem your disc has is one of them.
6547  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / RPG Roundup on: March 25, 2005, 07:40:17 PM
Gamestop has May 24th now.  I think EB just put up the wrong date, since NIS America has said it'll be released in May since they announced it.
6548  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / RPG Roundup on: March 25, 2005, 12:09:08 PM
I'm still not sure about all the aspects of the game, but I don't think there are any strategy RPG elements in Atelier Iris.  It looks like a standard RPG with a  really involved item-combination system.  Wild ARMs 4 looks really good, too.  I like the jumping elements (especially if they're used in the puzzles the series is known for) and the battle system looks intriguing in the videos.  I hope we get a confirmation of a US release soon.
6549  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / RPG Roundup on: March 25, 2005, 10:03:28 AM
Lots of RPG news this week, since both Shining Force Neo and Wild ARMs 4 were released in Japan this week.  IGN has impressions of Shining Force Neo and Wild ARMs 4, as well as news about Phantasy Star Universe.  Also, Worthplaying has posted a preview and English screenshots for Atelier Iris : Eternal Mana.
6550  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Lords Demo available tommorrow on: March 25, 2005, 04:08:07 AM
Great news.  I've really been looking forward to this one, so I hope it's turned out well.
6551  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Phantom Kingdom - "Sequel" to Disagea on: March 24, 2005, 11:24:53 AM
IGN has posted some impressions of the Japanese version.
6552  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lunar game in the works for the DS on: March 24, 2005, 06:37:52 AM
I'd say they're most like the early Final Fantasy games, with your party on one side and the enemy on the other in turn-based battles.  They're best known for their nice and numerous anime cutscenes and endearing characters.  The graphics are simple SNES quality, but still charming.  They're definitely worth playing, and I see them fairly often at used game stores, so they're probably not that rare.
6553  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Phantom Kingdom - "Sequel" to Disagea on: March 23, 2005, 07:15:10 PM
They're also working on a game called Makai Wars for the PSP, which will presumably tie in with Makai Kingdom.
6554  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lunar game in the works for the DS on: March 23, 2005, 07:23:21 AM
According to RPGamer, a game called Lunar Genesis is in the works for the DS.  I loved Lunar : Silver Star Story, and Eternal Blue to a lesser extent, so I would love to see another game in the series.  This good news almost makes up for the bad news that Phantasy Star Universe is going to be a sequel to the PS Online games, rather than the original RPGs frown
6555  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Holy crap - Goldeneye DS!! (&Dragon Quest + Katamari Dam on: March 20, 2005, 08:56:36 AM
I don't know if it's in the article, but Square Enix has announced two Dragon Quest games for the DS - a DQ Monsters game and a Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest game, in addition to FF3.
6556  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xenosaga 2? on: March 19, 2005, 09:26:02 PM
"Not to mention it has even more cutscenes than the original, and the original had more cutscene time than gameplay time."

It may have seemed that way, but it's not true.  It certainly had a ton of lengthy cutscenes, but there were only 8 total hours of them in a 40 hour game.
6557  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / God of War on: March 19, 2005, 09:22:20 PM
None of the reviews I've read have mentioned the game being overly difficult, while pretty much all of the DMC3 reviews did.  Whether this means that it's not incredibly hard or they just didn't mention it, I don't know.
6558  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Next Oddworld game revealed on: March 18, 2005, 08:40:39 PM
There's a very nice piece of artwork accompanying the article, and it's in the same style as the Stranger artwork, so I'm pretty sure it's legitimate.
6559  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Next Oddworld game revealed on: March 18, 2005, 07:36:55 PM
There's a blurb in the new Game Informer about the next Oddworld game in the works for XBox.  It will be a first/third person game like Stranger's Wrath, with a new character named Fangus.  Fangus is a shepherd with rabies who uses guns and his flock to attack enemy invaders.
6560  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Xbox] Phantom Dust - Now with a few demo impressions on: March 17, 2005, 06:17:43 AM
My "free" copy has shipped from Gamestop, but since I chose value shipping, it's probably going to be a while before I actually play it slywink
