6481  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 2? PS3? Revolution? PC? Check out the screens... (56k) on: April 30, 2005, 01:34:49 AM
I don't understand why people are so skeptical of next-gen console graphics abilities.  Even first generation games should look much better than what today's PCs are capable of, and those games will probably use only a fraction of the consoles' abilities.  The Madden next-gen shots are mock-ups of what the engine is capable of, and the developers have said that what they have running looks better than those shots.
6482  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Starshifter! How's your Progress in KOTOR 2? on: April 29, 2005, 11:01:24 AM
It's nice to know someone else takes as long to complete these games as I do.  My finishing time for KoTOR 1 was close to 90 hours, and I'm at about 23 with KoTOR 2 and just landed on Telos.
6483  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Square Enix E3 lineup on: April 29, 2005, 07:47:29 AM
RPGamer has details on the concert.  The first concert has finished its tour, and I would assume this new concert will go on tour as well.  I really hope they make it to Cleveland someday, as I would dearly love to see it.
6484  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden Tactics on: April 29, 2005, 07:39:30 AM
RPGFan has the news that Konami has registered the trademark "Suikoden Tactics" in the US.  Hopefully, we'll get to see this at E3.
6485  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Square Enix E3 lineup on: April 29, 2005, 06:46:31 AM
I'm about 30 hours into Star Ocean, and I love everything about it.  It is slow to get started, but everything, including the graphics and voice acting improve a lot once the prologue section is done.  The most amazing thing is the attention to detail.  There are hundreds of topics in the on-line dictionary detailing the backstory of the game, and every building is packed with little details.  Assuming things hold up, I think it's going to end up topping FFX as my favorite RPG ever.

In other Square E3 news, they're putting on another concert around the time of E3, as with last year's Dear Friends concert.  This new concert will feature a performance of the opera music from FF6, and CDs of both shows will be available at the concert.  I really hope they plan to sell the CDs in stores, because I would love to have them.
6486  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Snowblind gets Dark Alliance rights on: April 29, 2005, 03:27:30 AM
According to Worthplaying, Interplay has sold the Dark Alliance rights to Snowblind.  They lost the D&D connection, so it's just the name, but it's pretty easy to guess now what their next game is going to be slywink
6487  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Square Enix E3 lineup on: April 28, 2005, 12:34:03 AM
Square had an "off" year or two while they recovered from the Spirits Within disaster and expanded (mostly unsuccessfully) into other genres.  Thankfully, that time is over.  The three big upcoming releases - FF12, Dragon Quest 8, and Kingdom Hearts 2 all look amazing, as do their lesser-known games like Radiata Stories and Grandia 3.  Their non-RPGs may be iffy at best, but I think in the next year or two we're going to see some awesome RPGs from them.
6488  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Flagship Studios finally announces project...Hellgate:London on: April 27, 2005, 10:31:44 PM
"Diablo 2 was at first limited to pixelated 800x600 mode."
Didn't it start off at 640x480 and then get bumped up by the expansion pack?

The game looks like loads of fun to me.  Even with its problems, I haven't found a game that does the Diablo forumla better than Diablo 2.  Flagship has said they intend to keep it an RPG first, so there will be no ammo to worry about, and the FPS controls will be simplified (targetting aids, etc) and be based on your stats and equipment.
6489  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Atlus E3 lineup on: April 26, 2005, 09:20:24 PM
There's a trailer for Magna Carta at GameTrailers and a website for the game here.  It looks like there will be some sort of Judgment Ring system, since the website lists "A new input system called ‘trinity drive’ which is as if one does rhythm action" as one of the features.
6490  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Atlus E3 lineup on: April 26, 2005, 06:58:39 PM
According to RPGFan Atlus will be showing Digital Devil Saga 2 and Magna Carta : Tears of Blood.  There are some screenshots of Magna Carta at RPGamer.  I don't know anything about it, but it looks very nice and one of the screenshots shows what appears to be a Judgment Ring-style meter.
6491  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Square Enix E3 lineup on: April 26, 2005, 06:40:37 PM
I'm hoping we'll get a nice surprise and they'll announce DQ8 for this summer.  If Radiata Stories is coming out in the fall, KH2 presumably before Christmas, and FF12 next spring, there aren't many options for DQ8's release.  Hopefully, the unfortunate lack of voice acting in DQ8 means a quick localization.
6492  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Square Enix E3 lineup on: April 26, 2005, 06:54:13 AM
Game Informer has a list of the games Square Enix will be showing at E3.  Finally, we get official US confirmation for Dragon Quest 8, as well as Radiata Stories, and Romancing Saga : Minstrel Song.  Now, if only Sony will be showing Dark Cloud 3, I'll be very happy.
6493  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Prince of Persia 3 Screens and Info on: April 26, 2005, 03:16:53 AM
PoP 3 is just a working title, just as they called WW PoP 2 when it was first announced.  I imagine it'll end up with just PoP and a subtitle.
6494  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone tryed "Full Metal Alchemist: Broken Angel" on: April 25, 2005, 06:42:55 PM
I haven't played the others, but I'm really enjoying Ys.  The best thing about it is the variety in enemies.  So many action RPGs (particularly the BG Dark Alliance and Champions type games) get boring because every enemy just rushes at you or sits back and slings spells or arrows at you.  So far, in Ys, every enemy I've come across has a different type of attack or require a different method to defeat.  Some require certain sword attacks, while others do charge attacks, throw bombs and retreat, etc.  It's been lots of fun so far, so hopefully, this holds up througout the game.
6495  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Serious Sam 2 screenshot on: April 25, 2005, 07:40:19 AM
"Hope the gameplay expands beyond the "pass checkpoint, kill buttloads of enemies, rinse, lather, repeat."
Wasn't that the point of the games, though?  They were intentionally made simple to provide an alternative to the increasingly cinematic and complicated FPS games.  I do hope they add some variety like Serious Sam : The Second Encounter did, with the bouncy platforms, changing gravity, etc.  I know they're adding a physics system, as it was shown in last year's trailer for the game.
6496  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga Impressions! (pg. 2) on: April 24, 2005, 07:32:02 AM
There's probably more to it, but some enemies are weak against gun attacks and there are combos involving them.
6497  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 details on: April 23, 2005, 08:02:33 AM
RPGamer has some new details on the characters and battle system for the upcoming Shadow Hearts : From The New World, including word of the return of one of the characters from Covenant.  Hopefully, we'll get word of a US release at E3.
6498  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Greatest Strategy Guide Ever Written on: April 22, 2005, 01:29:46 AM
The Star Ocean : Til the End of Time guide is massive and very high-quality.  They even used high-quality thick paper for it.  It puts most RPG strategy guides to shame.
6499  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution - touchpad controllers? on: April 21, 2005, 06:40:17 PM
Game Informer is great for world exclusives and previews, but I've found most of their rumors don't pan out.  While it's possible that the Revolution controller will have a built-in touchscreen, there's no way there won't be analog sticks and buttons.  It wouldn't make sense - they'd turn off both hardcore gamers and the new gamers they're trying to attract.  Even people who know next to nothing about video games know that controllers are supposed to have sticks and buttons - they'd be intimidated by a controller that doesn't.
6500  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Super Punches in Rocky Legends? on: April 21, 2005, 06:39:17 PM
I would assume the two version would use the same layouts for the buttons, thus (PS2)X=(XBox)A, Circle=B, Square=X, and Triangle=Y.
6501  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I miss my GBA on: April 19, 2005, 07:11:29 PM
I forgot about that one.  Fire Emblem : The Sacred Stones is due out next month.
6502  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution punting on E3 on: April 19, 2005, 06:11:29 AM
Regardless of whether this is true, I think it would be a wise move for Nintendo.  There is going to be such an overload of information coming out of E3, Nintendo would get lost in the shuffle no matter what.  Let Sony and Microsoft try to outdo each other, and then launch a big reveal in the post-E3 doldrums.  If they do have something truly revolutionary, they need people to focus their attention on them, and that wouldn't happen at E3.
6503  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I miss my GBA on: April 19, 2005, 01:17:45 AM
There are two RPGs on the horizon - Riviera from Atlus, and Sigma Star Saga (a combination side-scrolling space shooter/RPG!) from Namco, set for release in June and July, respectively.  There's also Pokemon Emerald at the end of this month.
6504  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Oh Noes!! Pariah Demo! on: April 15, 2005, 06:33:04 PM
Are there bots available to play against in the demo or is it strictly for play against other people?
6505  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is it wierd to want a system for just 1 game? on: April 15, 2005, 05:55:35 AM
"Atlus SRPGs (Disegena, Phantom Brave)"
No offense, but that is the worst mangling of Disgaea I've ever seen  biggrin
6506  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The anything BUT Jade Empire discussion thread on: April 15, 2005, 05:52:55 AM
When you level up, your 3 primary stats increase, and you get points to allocate to them as you see fit.  Your 3 primary stats are used to determine your conversation abilities (intimidate, charm, and one other one), so those improve along with your stat point increases.  You also gain points to allocate to the 3 facets of your styles, making them do more damage or increase status affect duration, etc.  You can also get bonuses for completing certain objectives.  For instance, I gained +7 to focus for reading all the books in the first town.
6507  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Target $1 bin games on: April 15, 2005, 05:47:24 AM
I've seen some cheap productivity stuff in the Target $1 bins before, but they actually had some old Sierra games in there this week.  I picked up Pharaoh, Sierra Sports Game Room, After Dark Games, and Creep Night Pinball for $1 each.
6508  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Jade Empire - Official Impressions on: April 14, 2005, 11:11:44 AM
Does anyone know if you get experience if your follower kills an enemy?  I would assume so, but I don't want to be missing out on experience if you don't.
6509  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The anything BUT Jade Empire discussion thread on: April 14, 2005, 05:36:32 AM
"Just sit back, absorb, and turn your mind off."
To me, it's the opposite.  I find today's games much more engaging than the old ones.  There was a decision in KoTOR that I mulled over for quite a long time, not because of the differing affects my decision might have on the game, but because the game posed a very interesting moral dilemma.  Graphics, voice acting, etc. are tools that allow developers greater freedom in creating games.  If they don't use them to make the game more involving or interesting, I don't think it's because of the graphics/VO themselves, but the poor use of them.

"I would like to compare sales of ES3 v KotOR"
I'm almost positive that Bethesda announced that both XBox versions sold over a million each, plus the PC sales.  Just a guess, but I'd put KoTOR's sales at about half that total.
6510  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 360 - Design seen? on: April 13, 2005, 06:30:19 PM
It sounded a little goofy at first, but XBox 360 has really grown on me, and I think it's almost certain that is the final name.  As for being white, I just can't see it.  Ugly green and black is synonymous with the XBox, and I can't see them dumping something that is so closely tied to them.
6511  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [ps2] SRPG fans UNITE! Stella Deus (4/26) on: April 13, 2005, 07:17:12 AM
IGN has just posted a preview of the game.
6512  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Laxius Power - massive, freeware console RPG on: April 12, 2005, 06:42:23 PM
I'm really sorry about that - with Firefox, I didn't get any popups.  I removed the link in my first post, since the game is widely available from other sites.
6513  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Tales of Legendia Coming on: April 12, 2005, 06:33:08 PM
This is great news, but since they're announcing Legendia first, it looks like they're skipping over bringing Tales of Rebirth to the US.  That's a shame, as it's supposed to be a very good game.  Hopefully, someone else will pick it up for US release (if Namco would allow that) or we'll see it on a handheld.
6514  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Laxius Power - massive, freeware console RPG on: April 12, 2005, 07:14:05 AM
Technically, this is about a PC game, but the game is very much a console-style RPG, so I figured it would be of most interest to console gamers.
The developers have released the final chapter in the Laxius Power saga, a series of 3 freeware "old-school" console-style RPGs.  The feature list (especially for part 3) looks incredible and there's supposed to be 200-300 hours of gameplay between the 3 games    There's also supposed to be some "adult" content in the form of nudity.  A Google search for "Laxius Power" will lead to many shareware site download links.
6515  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The anything BUT Jade Empire discussion thread on: April 11, 2005, 10:24:52 AM
Gamespy has posted their review - 5/5.  I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot of perfect or near-perfect scores for this game.
6516  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Radiata Stories by Sqaure Enix available on Gamestop on: April 11, 2005, 06:59:40 AM
It's a humorous action-RPG from the makers of the excellent Star Ocean : Til The End of Time.  IGN has a hands-on preview here.
6517  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Radiata Stories by Sqaure Enix available on Gamestop on: April 11, 2005, 04:40:12 AM
I'm glad Square Enix is stepping up their US releases.  Even the remake Romancing SaGa : Minstrel Song looks like it's coming to the US.
6518  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Phantasy Star Universe details on: April 08, 2005, 08:50:23 AM
IGN has some details and the confirmation that Phantasy Star Universe will be released in the US (I really wish Square Enix were this forthcoming with their US release confirmations.)  Also, the rumors were right - the game will have both an offline, story-driven mode, as well as an online mode, presumably similar to the PSO games.
6519  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The anything BUT Jade Empire discussion thread on: April 08, 2005, 05:56:34 AM
Bioware has definitely dropped hints about a PC release, but haven't officially confirmed anything.
6520  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kingdom Hearts- Any Way to Disable Subtitles? on: April 08, 2005, 05:53:36 AM
No, and I find it very annoying as well.  Xenosaga is the same way, as well as Digital Devil Saga.  I have to avert my eyes from the bottom of the screen to avoid reading the subtitles before they're spoken.  I got used to it eventually, but I have no idea why there isn't an option to shut them off like there is in pretty much every other game.
