6481  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Digital Devil Saga 2 coming October 4 on: September 26, 2005, 05:09:11 AM
I don't know for sure, but I doubt they'd change the encounter rate.  I think it's just the way the Shin Megami Tensei series works, and I don't think they'd change it for this game.  Although it occasionally gets annoying, I actually like the high encouter rate.  It gives the game an "old-school" feel that, along with the "new-school" setting and presentation, makes for a fascinating experience.
6482  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Which Prince of Persia 2 version is the least buggy? on: September 26, 2005, 05:03:28 AM
In the Gamespot review, they mentioned that the Gamecube version didn't have the bugs they experienced with the PS2 and XBox versions.  I loved Sands of Time, but the absurd ass-hanging out outfit the female enemy was wearing and the Prince's "You b@#$!" comment in the demo were enough to convince me to stay far, far away from Warrior Within.
6483  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Digital Devil Saga 2 coming October 4 on: September 25, 2005, 09:26:21 AM
I loved Coordinate 136.  It's one of my all-time favorite dungeons in an RPG.  That and the cutscene after finishing the Citadel (with Mick and Jinana) are the best moments of the game so far.
6484  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Digital Devil Saga 2 coming October 4 on: September 25, 2005, 07:10:55 AM
According to RPGamer, Atlus has announced that Digital Devil Saga 2 will ship October 4.  I'm absolutely loving the first one, but it doesn't look like I'll be done with it by the time the sequel comes out.  BTW, for those who have finished it, I'm doing the Deserted Ship area now, so about how far am I through the game?
6485  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Total Overdose Demo on: September 25, 2005, 07:07:19 AM
It was a lot of fun, but I'm hoping the lack of quicksave/quickload was just due to its being a demo.  I loved Serious Sam and Max Payne, which this game seems like a crazy melding of, but there's no way I'd be able to play either without tons of saving/loading.
6486  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy XII Famitsu Scans (56k) on: September 23, 2005, 06:50:31 PM
The Japanese release date is March 26, so probably summer or fall for the US, assuming they're heavily into working on the localization.  I really like all the different facial expressions from the in-game graphics shots.  It should really add to the emotion of the story.  BTW, the new character is a boy named Ramon, and he is supposed to be one of the playable characters.
6487  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Serious Sam 2 Demo! on: September 23, 2005, 08:50:05 AM
I was very impressed, too - it was a ton of fun.  It would be nice if it were $20, but it looks to be longer than the first two games combined, and much more varied in terms of scenery and enemies, so $30 is certainly reasonable.
6488  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST Season 2 Premier Tonight on: September 23, 2005, 01:48:19 AM
" I don't know, maybe it was the mesmerizingly awful wig Matthew Fox wore the whole time that distracted me."
I think that was Scott Baio's old hair from Charles in Charge slywink
6489  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone replaying FF7? on: September 23, 2005, 01:21:07 AM
"Kevin, what do you recommend to get around the graphics-whore prejudice and the very slow opening-eveyr time I try to play the first 2 hours or so just bore me to tears"
Watch the FF7 intro tech demo that Square made, and then pretend the rest of the game is using those same graphics slywink  Either that, or wait 5 years or so for the the PS3 remake.
6490  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone replaying FF7? on: September 22, 2005, 06:44:04 PM
Thanks - I didn't remember having this issue the first time I played, but I also forgot that the game doesn't support analog control.
6491  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone replaying FF7? on: September 22, 2005, 11:39:37 AM
I'm replaying Final Fantasy 7 in preparation for Advent Children, but I have a  strange problem.  The PS1 memory card I'm saving games on is now full, with FF7 taking up the final slot. However, when I go to save in the game, it shows all 15 slots as empty and able to be saved into. In most games, full slots are marked as unavailable when you go to save, but for some reason, FF7 is showing them as empty.  If anyone else is playing it, could you check when you save and see what it says for the save slots?  I'm worried I'll forget the memory card is full, and inadvertantly overwrite another game's save.
6492  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST Season 2 Premier Tonight on: September 22, 2005, 10:47:37 AM
"Was there any particular reason Locke didn't wait until daylight to go down the hatch or was he just impatient?"
He's obsessed with discovering what's going on, to the point of (unknowingly) sending Boone to his death.  The character reminds me of Sloan on Alias, and I'm guessing we'll eventually see Locke go down the same path of obsession that Sloan did with Rambaldi.  Locke seems wise and sane on the island, but we saw in flashbacks that, not long before he got on the plane, he was delusional to the point of actually thinking a phone sex operator was in love with him.
6493  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Looking for the DQ VIII demo on: September 22, 2005, 08:32:39 AM
The full DQ8 site is due to go live soon, and they are supposed to have signups to have the demo sent to you for free when it does.
6494  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 21, 2005, 10:02:57 PM
Final Fantasy XII is set for release in Japan on March 26, and Kingdom Hearts 2 is scheduled for Japanese release on December 22.  I'm guessing both are being localized as the games are being developed.  I'd guess the US releases will be spring for KH2 and fall for FF12, with hopefully Grandia 3 in the summer.
6495  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 21, 2005, 06:42:04 PM
The great RPG-related news just keeps on coming this week  biggrin
6496  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox rpg questions on: September 21, 2005, 06:35:02 PM
The only traditional console RPG for XBox that I know of is Lord of The Rings : The Third Age, which is based on the gameplay of Final Fantasy X, and it's also available on the PS2.  Star Wars : KoTOR 1 and 2 are more like console RPGs than they are PC RPGs, but are different enough to not really fit the category of traditional console RPG.  There are a ton for the PS2, and at least 25 more coming before the end of the PS2's life cycle.  Apparently, MS realized lack of RPGs was a problem on the XBox,  as there are already at least 4 traditional console RPGs in the works for the 360.
6497  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden 1 and 2 coming to PSP on: September 20, 2005, 10:39:27 PM
According to RPGamer, Konami has announced that they won't be bringing this to the US frown  I really don't get why, as it certainly wouldn't have involved much work to localize it, given that the games were already translated.
6498  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Blockbuster - 25% off used games on: September 20, 2005, 10:02:57 PM
I was in Blockbuster today, and they are having one of their usual pre-owned sales, this time with 25% off all used games.  I picked up Ratchet & Clank 3 for around $13 and Mark of Kri for about $5.
6499  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 unofficially confirmed for US release on: September 20, 2005, 06:34:58 PM
The head of the company is the former president of Square Enix USA and there are several other former SE employees as well.
6500  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XSeed bringing Shadow Hearts 3 and Wild ARMs 4 to US on: September 20, 2005, 06:24:06 PM
As mentioned in the Shadow Hearts thread, new company XSeed is bringing Wild ARMs 4 and Shadow Hearts : From The New World to the US.  Here's the news at Worthplaying. Not only that, but they're also looking into bringing other games over that may have been passed over for localization.   Needless to say, I'm very happy smile

According to EBGames, WA4 is set for release in January, and SH3 in March.  Also, both will $40 instead of $50.  These dates are probably accurate, since EB and Gamestop are linked to from XSeed's site.
6501  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Wow, there are a LOT of RPGs coming on: September 20, 2005, 09:13:58 AM

   Even if a couple of these don't make the US, that's a lot of RPG goodness coming our way, plus who knows how many for PS3.
6502  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Magna Carta: Tears of Blood (and joy!) on: September 20, 2005, 08:57:35 AM
I'm really looking forward to it, as I love timing-based combat systems, as in Shadow Hearts and Gladius.  There's a review at GameFAQs that gives a description of the combat system.  Also, Play magazine is supposed to have a preview of it in this month's issue.
6503  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / be the master of some poor fools destiny on: September 20, 2005, 03:09:10 AM
There's also a PC version, although it appears to be all 2D, unlike the console version.  Gamespot has a 30-day trial here.
6504  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 20, 2005, 03:04:15 AM
When you're talking about console RPGs, DQ8 is an archetype of the genre.  The first Dragon Quest created the genre of console RPGs, with the first Final Fantasy coming not long after.
6505  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 19, 2005, 04:17:49 AM
Two words - LEGO Slimes.
6506  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ikusagami - 1 vs. 65, 535 on: September 18, 2005, 11:46:01 AM
1Up has a video and some impressions for Ikusagami here, an action game for the  PS2 that was announced at TGS.  The video is very impressive - 65000+ enemies coming at you makes Dynasty Warriors seem like a walk in the park slywink
6507  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden V Announced on: September 18, 2005, 07:55:34 AM
1Up has some impressions of the demo.  The game sounds great, from the new graphic style to the increased combat options, like rotating characters in and out of battle and formations.  It's looking like Suikoden 4 was a one-game abberation, as both Suikoden Tactics and S5 are both shaping up to be great.
6508  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden V Announced on: September 17, 2005, 03:15:14 AM
It was a return to the much simpler style of the first game, and it didn't really work.  The world consists of 75% water, which you sail on with a slow ship and Skies of Arcadia-frequent random encounters.  The 4-player parties removed what little strategy there was in the battles, and the graphics were very bland and lifeless.  There are some great characters, though, and the cutscenes are nicely-done with exceptional voice acting.  It's not all bad, but it has some bad parts.  BTW, I loved Golden Sun, so I guess I shouldn't compare it to that slywink
6509  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Atelier Iris 2 coming to US on: September 17, 2005, 01:32:34 AM
I got an e-mail from NIS America today, revealing that they are planning to release Atelier Iris - Eternal Mana 2 in the US this spring.  I'm really enjoying the first, and I'm glad to hear it sold well enough for them to bring the sequel over.
6510  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden V Announced on: September 17, 2005, 01:22:17 AM
It seems they're looking more to the earlier games for inspiration.  Both 6 character battles from the first 3 games (hopefully individually rather than team-controlled) and player skills from S3 are returning for part 5.  Thankfully, they've already announced a US release, unlike some companies who wait months before announcing a US release.
6511  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Level 5 (Dark Cloud, DQ8) announces Rogue Galaxy on: September 16, 2005, 10:01:40 AM
1Up has the awesome new TGS trailer here.
6512  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The real Revo controller on: September 16, 2005, 08:17:47 AM
If nothing else, a Wario Ware game using this thing could be the best game ever.
6513  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [XB360] Oblivion - Collectors Edition - $69.99 on: September 16, 2005, 07:44:17 AM
"I am getting embarrased by the number of spelling and grammatical errors"
You mean embarrassed?  biggrin
6514  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden 1 and 2 coming to PSP on: September 16, 2005, 07:02:13 AM
The teaser site for Suikoden 1 and 2 for PSP is here.  I already have both for PSOne, but it's nice that people will be able to play these without spending $100 or whatever for them.
6515  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy IV for GBA on: September 16, 2005, 01:36:54 AM
I read that, up through FF6, the odd FF games were gameplay-centered, while the even ones were story-centered.  Thus, 2, 4, and 6 all made big leaps in story presentation over what was standard at the time, and 1, 3, and  5 all had more in-depth gameplay systems, such as FF5's job system.
6516  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [XB360] Oblivion - Collectors Edition - $69.99 on: September 16, 2005, 01:31:15 AM
"I guess if we presuem that360 games will all be 60"
At least some of them won't be - Microsoft announced the price of Perfect Dark Zero as only $50.
6517  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Revolution's revolution a tilt controller? on: September 16, 2005, 01:29:20 AM
"The biggest killer was that using the controller was a lot more fatiguing then just pushing analog sticks, as you had to suspend it. It takes a lot more arm/wrist movement with a tilt controller."
That's true.  I've used a tilt controller, and it was very awkward.  You can't just hold it like a regular controller.  You have to hold it out and away from you, not resting comfortably on your lap.  You also have to hold it level, lest you cause unintended movement.  Maybe it was just a bad controller, but I hope this isn't what the Revolution controller will be.
6518  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy IV for GBA on: September 15, 2005, 06:56:05 PM
"And back then, Square believed that the story and gameplay was more important than the graphics. Nowadays, they just focus on the pretty pictures and over-abundance of CGI footage."
It's been 8 years since FF7, and people are still talking about the story and getting excited about a movie based on the characters.  FF7-X all featured involved, lengthy stories with developed characters, and (mostly) solid gameplay.  I can understand a personal preference for the older games, but I don't think anything has changed at Square.  Yes, the graphics are much better, but neither story nor gameplay has ever suffered because of it.
6519  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xenosaga 3, Baten Kaitos 2 announced on: September 15, 2005, 07:56:49 AM
IGN has some more info on BK2, including some returning characters, here.
6520  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xenosaga 3, Baten Kaitos 2 announced on: September 15, 2005, 05:55:33 AM
