6401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 09, 2005, 06:57:50 AM
Speaking of metal slimes, here's the (for now, at least) Japan-only metal slime controller -
6402  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 09, 2005, 01:35:30 AM
Gamestop has 11/22, but SquareEnix hasn't said anything more specific than "November".  As for being appropriate for a 6-year old, I'm not sure.  It is rated Teen, and the female character has "sex appeal" skills that, at least from what I've read about the Japanese version, can get pretty suggestive.  The violence is presumably pretty cartoony, although some of the cutscenes may be somewhat intense.
6403  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone getting Radiata Stories? on: September 07, 2005, 06:55:28 PM
"And Radiata Stories got assy reviews, so I'll be passing up on this one."
I'm not sure of the exact definition of "assy" slywink, but the reviews range mostly in the 7/10 range, with an 8 from IGN and 4.5/5 from RPGamer on the high end.
6404  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Anyone want a Greatest Hits Final Fantasy X . . . for free? on: September 07, 2005, 06:49:37 PM
FFX-2 is drastically different in tone from FFX.  Where FFX was mostly serious, FFX-2 is usually silly.  Its tone is similar to the recent Charlie's Angels movies.  It's definitely groan-inducing at times, but the mission-based gameplay is great fun, and the job-based battle system is one of the best in the FF series.
6405  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Level 5 (Dark Cloud, DQ8) announces Rogue Galaxy on: September 07, 2005, 09:33:01 AM
RPGamer has some great new scans here.  They also have some details on the battle system here.
6406  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Namco's new RPG - Tales of Abyss coming in 3 months on: September 06, 2005, 10:01:27 PM
The official site here says PS2.
6407  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone getting Radiata Stories? on: September 06, 2005, 08:05:49 PM
Anyone planning on getting Radiata Stories tomorrow?  With all the RPGs coming out before the end of the year, I'm trying to only pay full price for the ones that are likely to become rare quickly, so I'm going to hold off a few weeks on Radiata until I can get it used.  It's from the makers of the spectacular Star Ocean : Till the End of Time, and reviews are ranging from 7.5-8.5.
6408  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Namco's new RPG - Tales of Abyss coming in 3 months on: September 06, 2005, 10:53:04 AM
I don't know why they're producing so many so quickly, but as long as they maintain the standard of quality, I'm glad.  It looks like Tales of Rebirth won't be seeing a US release, but I think Abyss has a good chance for next fall, presuming Tales of Legendia sells well.  There will probably be a long RPG draught for the next-gen consoles (other than Oblivion for the 360), so I'm happy to stock up on as many current-generation titles asI can to tide me over until the next round smile
6409  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New RPG from maker of Atelier Iris - Ar Tonelico on: September 05, 2005, 10:33:30 PM
It is a PS2 game.  NIS America brought Atelier Iris : Eternal Mana from the same developer to the US, so presumably they would be the ones to bring this one over.  They haven't announced whether they're localizing Eternal Mana 2 yet (although I think they will), so I doubt we'll hear anything about this game being released in the US for quite a while.
6410  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New RPG from maker of Atelier Iris - Ar Tonelico on: September 05, 2005, 09:10:01 AM
Yes, that does certainly bear a strong resemblance to their Atelier Iris, although there looks to be some futuristic elements sprinked in.  The backgrounds look very nice, too.  There will probably be a lull in RPGs when the PS3 comes out, so I'm hoping companies will sieze the opportunity and release some of the more niche RPGs like this in the US.  I'm pretty sure Atelier Iris sold decently, so hopefully Eternal Mana 2 and this will be localized.
6411  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Phantasy Star Online on: September 05, 2005, 04:35:32 AM
"Also coming soon is the Sega Ages: Phantasy Star Trilogy...though it's release date is uncertain."
Unfortunately, the latest word is that the game has been dropped by the original publisher.  The Sega Ages remake of PS4 hit some snag in Japan, and hasn't been released yet.  Once they finish that, the game would have to be localized, and then they have to find someone to publish it.  I hope it does eventually get released in the US, but I've pretty much given up on it.
6412  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Phantasy Star Online on: September 04, 2005, 04:01:04 AM
There's also Phantasy Star Universe coming to the PS2 early next year.  It will have both full single-player and multiplayer components, but I don't know if they've announced whether you'll have pay to play online.
6413  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / More Oblivion Screens on: September 03, 2005, 01:05:50 AM
I don't know if they're the same ones, but there are a bunch of new screenshots at WorthPlaying.
6414  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Romancing SaGa news! on: September 03, 2005, 12:56:18 AM
I really disliked Saga Frontier 2 and Unlimited Saga, and I like most RPGs.  They do a lot of things different from most RPGs, but pretty much everything they do differently makes the game worse.  The background art looks very nice for Minstrel Song, but I really don't like the odd character designs.  Depending on reviews, I might pick it up eventually.
6415  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden V scan + Suikoden Tactics Trailers on: September 02, 2005, 06:54:35 PM
Rhapsodia is the Japanese name for Suikoden Tactics.  It's definitely from the Suikoden series, as it uses characters and places from Suikoden 4, and the runes and elemental magics play a role.  I don't know the reasoning behind calling it Rhapsodia in Japan.

Gamespot has some information about Suikoden 5 here.  Given the poor reception Suikoden 4 got in both the US and Japan, I'd imagine Suikoden 5 will be quite different than 4.  Then again, they are basing Tactics on 4, so who knows?
6416  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Level 5 (Dark Cloud, DQ8) announces Rogue Galaxy on: September 01, 2005, 06:51:56 AM
That's just a guess based on the screenshots.  It may be nothing like that, but it definitely looks action-based.
6417  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Level 5 (Dark Cloud, DQ8) announces Rogue Galaxy on: September 01, 2005, 05:25:19 AM
From the looks of the screenshots, the battle system appears to be most similar to Star Ocean : Till The End of Time.  There are three people fighting at once in real-time, although you presumably only control one at a time.
6418  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ever been carded buying an M-rated game? on: September 01, 2005, 12:53:57 AM
I was carded once buying a game at Best Buy, but I can't remember what the game was.  My dad, at age 44 and with graying hair, was carded while trying to buy beer.
6419  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Favorite Console Game Lead Character? on: August 31, 2005, 06:53:44 PM
"I still wish someone would do a quality mega man RPG."
Have you tried MegaMan X : Command Mission?  I'm really enjoying it.
6420  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Level 5 (Dark Cloud, DQ8) announces Rogue Galaxy on: August 31, 2005, 08:26:18 AM
Assuming they showed the whole trailer, it was almost 8 minutes long, and was indeed very impressive.  It looks like the PS2 is going to go out with a bunch of great RPGs.
6421  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I WON A XBOX 360!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on: August 31, 2005, 08:21:38 AM
Not to rain on your parade or anything, but according to an e-mail I got today, I won $2,000,000 in the South African lottery.  I also found out that I am the next of kin of an engineer in Iran, and will be inheriting over $5,000,000!  It must be my lucky day slywink
6422  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / TRULY late to the party: Final Fantasy X on: August 30, 2005, 08:34:31 PM
I got the hidden Aeons, and it wasn't that difficult or time-consuming like the ultimate weapons are supposed to be.  Some of the hidden Aeons can ignore the max 9999 damage, so they do lots of damage to the final boss.
6423  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / TRULY late to the party: Final Fantasy X on: August 30, 2005, 06:54:02 PM
FFX-2 is wildly different from FFX, and sometimes goes into cringe-inducing silliness, but as a gameplay-centered game, it's great fun to play, and has a great battle system.
6424  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 4 min Grandia 3 Intro Video - No Japanese skill required on: August 30, 2005, 09:15:42 AM
Gamespot has a new preview here.  Although they won't confirm a US release, they're already working on localizing it, and the preview even has some English screenshots from the demo.

6425  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / TRULY late to the party: Final Fantasy X on: August 30, 2005, 01:57:18 AM
Apparently, you're not the only one - FFX has been in the Top 10 FAQs at GameFAQs for months now.  It's still my favorite RPG of all time, and the ending is definitely one of, if not the best, ever.
6426  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GBA Riviera Manual on: August 30, 2005, 01:51:17 AM
You don't need the manual at all.  The game will explain everything you need to know.
6427  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / CC - DS2 - $35, new PS2 Greatest Hits - $15 on: August 28, 2005, 07:25:59 AM
Circuit City has Dungeon Siege 2 on sale this week for $35 (Best Buy has it for $40) and the new PS2 Greatest Hits for $15.  Only Sly 2, R&C3, Jak3, Hot Shots Fore, ATV 3, and Syphon Filter are listed, so I don't know if the other new GH are included or not.
6428  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The PSP is owned. End of story. (Sales in Japan) on: August 26, 2005, 11:20:46 PM
"I believe the characters are drawn from the incredibly popular Japanese magazine Shonen Jump. So yeah, the likelihood of it hitting US shores is pretty low. "
There's also an English version of Shonen Jump magazine, so I wouldn't think a US release of the game would be a problem.
6429  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Man, Beyond Good & Evil really is fantastic! on: August 26, 2005, 11:13:37 PM
"(been watching TONS of G4 lately)"
You mean there was something actually related to videogames on G4?  I must have missed that half-hour slywink
6430  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Fable: No responses? You're all Rotten! Every last wunnayu! on: August 26, 2005, 07:45:02 AM
"Dude! Thread title had the name of the game for several hours...minutes?"
Did you consider that maybe it's just that noboby likes you? slywink

"5. I can't figure out how to link items to my D-pad for quick use. Is it context sensitive (i.e., different items are linked for combat, normal walking around etc?) "
This confused me, too.  I believe there's a context-senstive one that displays predetermined actions for the target, and also a user-defined one that you can map any action to.
6431  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 26, 2005, 03:31:38 AM
Gamespot has a run-down of the arena enemies in their guide here.  Looks like you'll have to go back later slywink
6432  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 25, 2005, 06:08:24 AM
"I wish there was an ingame key for screenshots."
There is - PrtScrn will take a screenshot, and it will go into My Documents\My Games\Dungeon Siege 2\Screenshots.
6433  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / SP or Micro? Or even the DS? on: August 25, 2005, 06:05:19 AM
Unless size is a really big issue, I'd go with the DS.  There are a lot of good games out now or will be coming out for the DS, and you'd be locking yourself out of them if you get the GBA or Micro.
6434  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / High Fashion in gaming - Paris Hilton & Nintendogs on: August 25, 2005, 06:02:57 AM
Showing Paris Hilton with your competitor's product is the perfect way to show that yours is better slywink
6435  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / New PS2 Greatest Hits on: August 24, 2005, 11:32:29 PM
I'll take the red over those day-glo green bands they put on the Playstation Greatest Hits.  I think they were trying to punish you for not paying full price for them slywink
6436  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 24, 2005, 07:37:10 AM
""This is is locked and requires X"...the X is in yellow or a different color from the rest of the text. Should I have found a key somewhere? "
It might be part of a quest for one of the companions.  I believe areas that contain character-specific quests are locked off until you have that character in your party and have received the quest.
6437  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / RPG News - Magna Carta and Riviera on: August 24, 2005, 12:36:36 AM
According to RPGamer, Magna Carta will be a deluxe edition, much like Digital Devil Saga.  $5 isn't bad at all for a 100-page artbook and poster.
6438  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Great new Oblivion screens! on: August 23, 2005, 10:04:06 PM
"There are over 200 dungeons in Oblivion".    biggrin
6439  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Vote for which type of Bioware game you want next! on: August 22, 2005, 11:26:52 PM
All of Bioware's RPGs have excelled at different things.  In BG2, the gameplay (mostly the battles) were paramount, while character development and story were minimal.  In NWN, they made a great toolset that opened up RPG creation to a large number of people, producing many outstanding modules.  KoTOR (like Blizzard with StarCraft) showed they could craft a great story and memorable characters, and Jade Empire showed they could build a beautiful, original, and memorable world without a big license to fall back on.

I'm not the biggest fan of NWN, but I think the rest of the games are some of the best ever made, and I don't think they've lost anything.  Personally, I'd rather have good gameplay with great characters and story in an RPG than great gameplay and merely good characters and story.  Hopefully, someday they'll be able to capitalize on all their strengths in one game.
6440  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 unofficially confirmed for US release on: August 22, 2005, 09:06:14 AM
According to the same guy who's supposed to be from Midway, Midway actually wanted to publish the game, but they weren't willing to give the developers what they were asking for the rights.  They found another publisher who would, and offered Midway the same deal, but Midway refused.

From the review at GameFAQs, SH3 isn't a direct sequel as Covenant was to Shadow Hearts.  By all accounts, it's not as good as Covenant either, but I still really want to play it.  Hopefully, an official announcement will be made soon.
