6401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The reviews are coming in for Riviera on: June 27, 2005, 11:33:26 PM
The game looks interesting, but there are many things that look like they might make the game frustrating.  I'm really hoping someone posts a long, informative review before Wednesday.
6402  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Upcoming Games--- 06/27/05 on: June 27, 2005, 11:24:49 PM
"Well, excuse me for not realizing we have two RPGs/Tactical RPGs this week."
By tactical RPGs, do you mean games like Disgaea?  Neither Atelier Iris nor Riviera really fit that description.  Both are more-or-less traditional RPGs, at least in terms of battles.
6403  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lunar : Dragon Song coming to DS on: June 27, 2005, 07:38:13 AM
The Nintendo Power article also mentioned that the next Lunar game will most likely tell the story of the four heroes mentioned in the first game, something that fans have wanted for a long time.
6404  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suggest me some of the best RPGS out there... on: June 27, 2005, 05:20:53 AM
I'm at over 90 hours with DW7, and I think I'm about halfway through.  It's definitely the Baldur's Gate 2/Might & Magic 6 of the console world.
6405  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: June 27, 2005, 12:34:50 AM
Magna Carta is due out Winter 2005, so I would assume that means December.  RPGamer has some screenshots here.
6406  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: June 26, 2005, 09:26:08 AM
I love systems like the Judgment Ring, and wish more games would use them.  It's a nice compromise between turn-based and real-time and helps alleviate the tedium of fighting so many battles.  I'm really looking forward to hearing more about Magna Carta, which is supposed to combine a Judgment Ring type system with character movement on the battlefield.
6407  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: June 26, 2005, 06:04:37 AM
"A 15-year old lead character? An 8 year old pirate captain? C'mon, now."
The first two games also featured child/teen characters - Halley in the first game, and Anastasia in Covenant.  The developers have a way of taking what sound like ridiculuous character concepts and making them work.  Also, although Johnny is the character you play as, the story seems to revolve more around Shania - she's the one who is able to change forms, rather than the main character.
6408  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: June 25, 2005, 07:51:44 AM
RPGamer has some new info and scans for the game.  Someone better announce a US release soon, or someone's going to get hurt.
6409  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / NBA Live 2006 Pic [Xbox 360] on: June 25, 2005, 12:13:17 AM
That guy seriously needs some moisturizing cream.  He looks like he's about to crack into a million bits slywink
6410  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Your Nintendo Revolution Controller rumor for the day.... on: June 22, 2005, 11:35:22 PM
If these are accurate, I would assume they lock into some sort of base, so you can switch out which components you have in which slot.  Some company made a controller like this, where you can switch out different parts to make different button/stick arrangements.
6411  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FATE Released. (Think Diablo 1 + Nethack. But pretty.) on: June 22, 2005, 11:31:57 PM
On their forums, I read that it's a bad idea to keep trying a code that isn't working, as it can use up your unlocks.  I'd contact them and let them sort it out before trying the code again.
6412  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I don't understand the acceptance of the PSP exploits on: June 22, 2005, 10:12:03 PM
"Square Enix doesn't make money off Chrono Trigger carts anymore. It isn't officially available anywhere for current systems"
You can still find Final Fantasy Chronicles (which includes Chrono Trigger) for the PSOne in many used game stores, and it can be played on the PS2.

"its like file sharing - no one had a problem with it until artists and courts got involved"
It was always illegal, regardless of whether anyone was doing anything to stop it.
6413  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grandia 3 - beautful new shots on: June 19, 2005, 08:10:52 AM
RPGamer has some beautiful new shots of Grandia 3 here.  I can't see any reason why Square Enix wouldn't bring this to the US, so hopefully they won't wait too much longer before an official announcement.

6414  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / RPG News - Magna Carta and Riviera on: June 19, 2005, 07:37:43 AM
"please! - either really do up the english voicework right, or just leave it as is with subtitles"

Judging by past Atlus games like Disgaea and Digital Devil Saga, the voice work should be excellent.

6416  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Plan - a single-player multiplayer spy game on: June 18, 2005, 07:26:44 AM
Worthplaying has some details and screens for a new game, The Plan.  The premise sounds interesting, as you control 3 spies simultaneously while trying to pull off a heist.
6417  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / RPG News - Magna Carta and Riviera on: June 18, 2005, 07:19:20 AM
RPGamer has an interview with Atlus about their upcoming RPG Magna Carta.  The game looks great, especially the battle system, which sounds like it might be one of the best ever.  Also, Atlus has opened a website for their soon-to-be-released GBA RPG Riviera.
6418  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Paper Mario: TTYD on: June 17, 2005, 06:59:53 AM
The number of star pieces and shine sprites is listed on your main status page, although I think that only tells how many you currently have, not how many you've collected.  I'm pretty sure there is no reward for 100% completion (other than personal satisfaction, of course slywink).
6419  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Might and Magic VI: Mandate of Heaven SE at BigLots on: June 17, 2005, 06:54:40 AM
It's great fun and extremely long, probably on par with Baldur's Gate 2.  My characters were something like Level 111 or so when I finished.
6420  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Stoked for Star Ocean on: June 16, 2005, 06:28:45 PM
I think the game is fantastic, and I'd put it right up there with the best RPGs on the system.  What's most impressive is that, although the world is huge, it is also incredibly detailed.  Every area, down to the small houses, is packed with detail and unique objects, the backstory is detailed, and every object has a graphic and a description.  The combat system takes a while to get a handle on, but works very well, and I liked it a lot better than the one is Tales of Symphonia, especially the ability to quickly switch characters.  The game mixes both the big, epic moments and stunning wide-open outdoor areas with meticulously detailed indoor areas and small, intimate moments, and nails both.
6421  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kirby Canvas Impressions on: June 15, 2005, 08:12:13 AM
How did this game make it to market without a subtitle with DS initials?  Did they miss the memo from Nintendo? slywink
6422  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest Frontiers - $10 game going for $50+ on Ebay on: June 15, 2005, 02:25:21 AM
"so the people who play EQOA are needing it"
Those people exist? slywink  I'd have figured they would have shut down the servers long ago.
6423  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Star Ocean: Till the End of Time for 14.99 on: June 14, 2005, 06:19:38 PM
That's a steal for one of the best RPGs of this generation.  I paid $50 for it when it came out, and it's worth every penny.
6424  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Arc The Lad? on: June 14, 2005, 03:12:52 AM
GameInformer has quite negative hands-on impressions here.  I really enjoyed Twilight of the Spirits (I'm just about finished, even though I got it on its release day slywink), but I've heard mostly negatives about EoD.  Unless the game gets some really good reviews (which is looking unlikely) I'm going to wait and buy it used in a month or two, when a local store should have it for $20 or $30.  With Atelier Iris and Riviera coming at the end of the month, I'm being uncharacteriscally frugal this month slywink
6425  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden Tactics - info and screens on: June 12, 2005, 07:44:34 AM
This is the first full-blown strategy RPG for the series, but they've all featured a SRPG kind of mode for their big battles (or sea battles in S4's case).  That is why this genre seems like a logical step for the series.
6426  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden Tactics - info and screens on: June 11, 2005, 02:05:12 AM
RPGamer has some details and a magazine scan here for the new strategy RPG set in the Suikoden universe (Suikoden 4's time period apparently).  This type of game seems like a natural offshoot for the series, and the fact that Konami has already trademarked the name "Suikoden Tactics" in the US means it's most likely going to be released here.
6427  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls [GBA] on: June 08, 2005, 09:46:44 PM
"I got bored pretty quickly. Random encounter were every few steps the maps were very confusing and it was very, very easy (probably because of so many encounters - you level up pretty often)

I really love the FF series and I was really suprised by how little I enjoyed the game."

If you haven't played the original Final Fantasy (the NES version or the PSOne Origins remake), the Dawn of Souls version is very different in terms of difficulty level.  The original is very difficult - most dungeons require mutliple trips just to level up, and even carrying the maximum 99 potions, you'll run out quickly.  Add in the scarcity of magic (the original game didn't use MP points), instant death moves, and lack of save points (Origins had quick saves anywhere), and you get one difficult game.
6428  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution downloads free? on: June 08, 2005, 06:28:57 PM
I hope it's a standard pricing method, i.e. you pay for a game, and then it's yours.  I think $5 for NES and SNES and $10 for N64 would be fair.  There are only a few games for which I'd pay more than that.
6429  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Best SRPGs? on: June 07, 2005, 08:18:16 AM
There are a bunch available for the PSOne, though I haven't played most of them - Vandal Hearts 1 and 2, Kartia, Saiyuki, Arc the Lad Collection, Front Mission 3, etc.  I really like the Arc the Lad games, as they combine traditional RPG mechanics (visiting towns, walking around dungeons, etc.) with turn-based SRPG battles.
6430  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution downloads free? on: June 06, 2005, 10:03:40 AM
Cool - I forgot that Nintendo published Super Mario RPG.  I've always wanted to play that, but I was thinking Square had published it.  I would guess a lot of third parties will get on board with this.  It's basically free money for them.
6431  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lunar : Dragon Song coming to DS on: June 06, 2005, 12:38:34 AM
For some reason, Nintendo was listing the game as an RTS, but has since changed their listing to RPG, presumably turn-based and similar to the earlier games.  I really don't get what it happening with this game.  Ubisoft has next month listed as the release date for the US, but nobody even knows who the developer of the game is, and the little bit of information released the other day is pretty much all that is known about it.  This game is even more of a mystery than Riviera for the GBA.
6432  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lunar : Dragon Song coming to DS on: June 05, 2005, 06:36:05 AM
RPGFan has details on the new Lunar game for the DS, Dragon Song.  It will be a prequel to Silver Star, and is supposed to come out next month.  I'm surprised it's due to be released so soon (before the Japanese release, surprisingly) as I've heard next to nothing about the game.
6433  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution downloads free? on: June 05, 2005, 06:01:11 AM
I was afraid of that.  I hope they at least won't be much.  I'd probably pay up to $10 for games that I never got around to buying, like Paper Mario for the N64.
6434  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GBA...as a flashlight? on: June 05, 2005, 05:59:46 AM
Our power went out a few weeks ago.  I grabbed my GBA, used it to find my way my living room chair, and sat there playing Dragon Warrior 3 until the power came back on smile
6435  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest 8 Slime Controller coming to US on: June 04, 2005, 03:22:29 AM
The incredibly cool slime controller for Dragon Quest 8 is coming to the US, according to 1Up.  It's pricey at $40, but it's great that it will be released here.

6436  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution downloads free? on: June 03, 2005, 06:22:32 PM
I hope a lot of third parties offer their games, even for a small fee.  It wouldn't be much work for them.  They just put the game on the download service - no advertising, manufacturing, etc.  It would also be a great way to preserve these classic games.
6437  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution downloads free? on: June 03, 2005, 10:38:48 AM
According to this interview at Gamesradar, the VP of Nintendo of America has said that all Nintendo-created NES, SNES, and N64 games will be downloadable via the Revolution for free.  If this isn't a misunderstanding (i.e. the download service is free, but the games cost), this might be the first console I buy on release day.  Metroid, Zelda, Paper Mario, Super Tennis, Mario Tennis, Mario Kart, etc. all free
6438  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / N64 cartridge problem on: June 03, 2005, 07:46:41 AM
If cleaning the contacts didn't work, this probably won't, but the old trick is to blow hard into the end of the cartridge.
6439  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The DS back on top in a big way in Japan on: June 02, 2005, 11:03:54 PM
I thought the DS was dead in the water before E3, but now, I'm really looking forward to getting one as soon as the next wave of games comes out.  I can't wait for Mario & Luigi 2!
6440  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Blizzard and Starcraft 2 on: June 02, 2005, 07:54:19 PM
There have been a few rumors regarding Blizzard's next game, and they've all pointed to Diablo 3.  I think this is odd, since WoW shares many elements of Diablo, so I would think StarCraft 2 would be the obvious choice for their next game.  They just trademarked the name "The Burning Crusade", but that is most likely the name of a WoW expansion pack.
Personally, I'd love for them to try their hand at a more traditional story-based RPG, a la Bioware.  I enjoyed WoW, but it finally convinced me that MMORPGs are just not for me.  If it had been a single-player game, I probably would have never stopped playing it.
