6401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What annoucement I'm REALLY hoping for? on: May 17, 2005, 01:34:27 AM
The announcement of the US release of Dragon Quest 8 already has me giddy, but I'm really hoping Sony announces Dark Cloud 3.
6402  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest 8 Release Date: November 2005 on: May 17, 2005, 01:31:36 AM
Only 6 more months to wait for DQ8!  This is going to be a very expensive fall and winter for me.  I think fiscal year 2006 ends in March, so that would put FF12 in the early spring.  Also, Square had a recreation of the FF7 intro running in real-time on the PS3 at Sony's press conference - perhaps meaning the rumored FF7-2 will be a PS3 title.
6403  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: May 16, 2005, 07:27:20 PM
There's an interview at RPGFan that talks a little about the series' sales.
6404  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Who are your favorite & least fav modern Star Trek char' on: May 16, 2005, 07:35:15 AM
Benjamin Sisko is my favorite character in all of Trek.  Just thinking about Sisko's monologue from "In the Pale Moonlight" where he says that he'd have knowlingly let an innocent person be killed to get the Romulans to join the Dominion War still gives me chills.  Garak would be my second pick - I love conflicted characters and he was more developed than some of the main characters have been.

The only character that I ever really disliked was Neelix, who I found annoying.
6405  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: May 16, 2005, 05:06:16 AM
I read in an interview that Covenant sold about as well in the US as the original Shadow Hearts did, so that's a good sign for #3.  Also, the fact that it's set in the US and the small, but devoted following the series has gained bode well.  I also have a sneaking suspicion that someone high-up at Midway is a big fan of the series.  It's just so different from what the games Midway usually puts out, it's really odd that they were the ones that brought the first two games to the US.
6406  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Shadow Hearts 3 characters revealed on: May 15, 2005, 06:53:55 AM
RPGamer has some details on three newly-announced characaters for Shadow Hearts 3.

"Mao loves to drink, and shamelessly takes advantage of her being a cat to ignore the Prohibition laws. In a fight, Mao is a Drunken Master, and the drunker she is, the more deadly she becomes."

"Hildegarde Valentine...Her ability in battle is Calorie Counting. Depending on how many calories she has consumed, she can transform into various shapes. Some of them might even do something to change her generally bratty, self-centered, and violent personality." And, she's a vampire.

I love the game already slywink
6407  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo E3 lineup (Mario & Luigi 2!) on: May 15, 2005, 06:37:56 AM
How odd - I didn't notice the typo and glossed right over the '06.  I can't see GI making two mistakes like that (and using '06 twice) but I can't see anyone going to the trouble of making a realistic-looking fake that only announces a bunch of games that are known (or heavily rumored) to be in production and a subtitle.
6408  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo E3 lineup (Mario & Luigi 2!) on: May 14, 2005, 08:56:09 PM
As seen on the front page of CG, Nintendo will be showing a sequel to the excellent Mario & Luigi : Superstar Saga (now for the DS) at E3.  I figured I'd eventually get a DS to play Final Fantasy 3, but this seals it.  The original M&L was so full of imaginative ideas, I can only imagine what they're going to come up with using the DS.  Also, there's a listing for a Mario soccer game, joining Mario Baseball and Mario Basketball, as well as a full-fledged Pokemon RPG for the Gamecube.
6409  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox RPG's - the future just got **much** brighter.... on: May 14, 2005, 10:46:37 AM
RPGFan and RPGamer have some new details regarding Blue Dragon and the newly-unveiled second game, Lost Odyssey.
6410  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Atlus E3 lineup on: May 13, 2005, 06:52:37 PM
Worthplaying has details and screens for the games.
6411  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FF7 : Advent Children coming September 14 on: May 13, 2005, 07:37:13 AM
According to Gamespot the Final Fantasy 7 sequel movie will be released simultaneously in the US and Japan on September 14.
6412  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Who all is excited about the big PS3 unveiling?! on: May 13, 2005, 01:49:25 AM
I doubt we'll hear much about about either the PS3 or Revolution at E3.  Both Sony and Nintendo will be concentrating on their handhelds.  I wouldn't be surprised at a big PS3 unveiling in November, just ahead of the XBox 360 launch, though.
6413  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rise of Nations 2 on: May 10, 2005, 06:34:02 PM
It's called Rise of Legends and Worthplaying has details and some very nice screenshots.
6414  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts Covenant - VERY Impressed on: May 10, 2005, 02:02:41 AM
"The ability to get detailed descriptions and artwork for every single item in your inventory is a huge bonus. Lots of great writing and factoids in these entries."
I love when games include things like this.  It's obvious the developers put a great deal of care and heart into the game, as did whoever did the fantastic localization.
6415  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rumored XBox 360 specs on: May 10, 2005, 01:59:45 AM
Didn't one of the official-looking pictures show that the hard drive is 40 GB rather than 20?  Also, I'd be surprised if the two versions (if there are two versions) were only $60 apart.  Why would anyone buy the non-hard drive version?  The 64 MB memory cards would probably cost $30 or so, and if you bought two, you'd equal the $360 price and only have 128 MB.
6416  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / atelier iris pre-order... on: May 09, 2005, 03:47:48 AM
The Gamestop listing doesn't mention the soundtrack.  Was it added when you went to check out?  Normally, I'd love to get the free bonus, but the $20 rebate (from Phantom Dust) that I was going to use isn't useable on games with free premiums.
6417  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Agetec E3 lineup - Wild ARMs F and PoPoLoCrois on: May 08, 2005, 04:36:52 AM
I think it's French for "Why is ever other letter capitalized?" slywink
6418  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Agetec E3 lineup - Wild ARMs F and PoPoLoCrois on: May 07, 2005, 09:06:51 AM
IGN has posted a listing of the games that Agetec will be showing at E3.  Thankfully, Wild ARMs Alter Code F is on the list, since the delays had me worried they were going to drop it.  Also, the formerly Japan-only RPG series PoPoLoCrois is headed to the US on the PSP.
6419  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / atelier iris pre-order... on: May 07, 2005, 02:02:48 AM
According to this news item at RPGamer the soundtrack is only for the first 500 who preorder directly from NIS.  The mini strategy guide code is for all preorders from them, but will also be available to everyone two weeks after the game is released.
6420  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Snowblind gets Dark Alliance rights on: May 05, 2005, 12:36:08 AM
Hopefully, having to create their own world and characters will help them to create a more interesting game.  I loved the original Dark Alliance, but found both BGDA2 and CoN got boring pretty fast.  I hope they find a way to spice up the formula somehow.
6421  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sigma Star Saga Preview on: May 04, 2005, 05:45:10 AM
Gamespy has a preview for the upcoming (and really cool-looking) Sigma Star Saga, Namco's sidescrolling space-shooter/RPG.
6422  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Indigo Prophecy Preview on: May 04, 2005, 05:42:14 AM
Gamespot has a pre-E3 preview of the upcoming adventure game Indigo Prophecy.  I'm really looking forward to this game - everything about it seems unique and intriguing.
6423  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts Covenant - VERY Impressed on: May 03, 2005, 09:35:29 AM
Returning to areas works in both games.  Many areas you return to in Covenant will lead to items that give your characters abilities, such as Karin's music or wolves for Blanca to fight.  There are also some fun ongoing sidequests, such as Solomon's Key, trading items, and the treasure hunt.
6424  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts Covenant - VERY Impressed on: May 03, 2005, 06:30:40 AM
" Yuri can only have three fusion monsters equipped at a time and the amount of sanity it takes to summon one means he will likely only use one per battle."
They changed this for the sequel.  In Covenant, there's no SP cost to fuse. You lose a few SP per round while fused, so you can switch between any fusion you have acquired (they no longer have to be equipped) and there's no cost (SP or turn-wise) to do so.  It's a very nice change, although I like the way you acquired new fusions better in the first game.

As for sidequests, there's kind of a theme to getting bonus/sidequest items.  Always return to areas you've cleared out, as you'll usually find something new there.  This is especially true of rooms in which you fight bosses.  There's usually an item in them you can't get on your first visit because you enter the cutscene/boss battle as soon as you enter the room.
6425  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Blue Dragon- New Xbox 360 RPG announced on: May 03, 2005, 01:29:27 AM
I wonder if they game will be cel-shaded - I'm not sure how well Toriyama's designs would translate to regular 3D graphics.  I've been pretty disappointed with the rumored XBox 360 hardware so far (lack of built-in hardrive), but it looks like the games will make up for it.

There's a very small amount of information at RPGamer.
6426  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I played Final Fantasy X-2 - where are my testicles? on: May 03, 2005, 01:23:09 AM
Both 9, X, and X-2 allow you to shorten the summoning animations.  Sitting through them was a pain in FF8 - I can't believe there weren't enough complaints about the Japanese version for them to allow shortened ones in the US version.
6427  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I played Final Fantasy X-2 - where are my testicles? on: May 02, 2005, 06:52:30 PM
"The other main problem with FF8 was that for most of the game, Squall was a completely uninteresting and unlikeable main character. His only motivations seemed to either be apathy or just plain rudeness, which made me really dislike him."
That was the main reason I liked it smile  I really enjoyed watching Squall start out as an uncaring jerk, learn the reasons behind his feelings, and finally coming to terms with them.  FF8 was definitely flawed, but I enjoyed its more realistic look and more mature storyline and characters.
6428  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I played Final Fantasy X-2 - where are my testicles? on: May 02, 2005, 10:01:16 AM
I'm having great fun with X-2.  It's cheesy, but it's also a lot of fun.  I really like job-based battle systems, and being able to change jobs mid-battle makes for a lot of variety in battle, something not even FFX managed to do.  I also like the minigames and the variety of things to do, and there's a ton of stuff to do.  I'm over 50 hours already and still in chapter 2 (of 5).  I love FFX, and it's still my all-time favorite RPG, but I'm enjoying FFX-2 for what it is.

"Now she is an attention whore, pop-star? Sure thing?"
Not to nitpick slywink, but that isn't Yuna singing at the beginning - it's Leblanc.  So far, the only thing Yuna has done is dance and sing a little, and she was prompted to do that.
6429  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I was blind, but now I can see (EBGames rant) on: May 01, 2005, 11:13:17 PM
"You see, I've never had a bad experience at a Gamestop or EB Games. Until yesterday."
Doesn't that mean you've had lots of good experiences with them?  You probably just hit on one of the bad stores - there are still plenty of good ones out there.
6430  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox 2? PS3? Revolution? PC? Check out the screens... (56k) on: April 30, 2005, 01:34:49 AM
I don't understand why people are so skeptical of next-gen console graphics abilities.  Even first generation games should look much better than what today's PCs are capable of, and those games will probably use only a fraction of the consoles' abilities.  The Madden next-gen shots are mock-ups of what the engine is capable of, and the developers have said that what they have running looks better than those shots.
6431  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Starshifter! How's your Progress in KOTOR 2? on: April 29, 2005, 11:01:24 AM
It's nice to know someone else takes as long to complete these games as I do.  My finishing time for KoTOR 1 was close to 90 hours, and I'm at about 23 with KoTOR 2 and just landed on Telos.
6432  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Square Enix E3 lineup on: April 29, 2005, 07:47:29 AM
RPGamer has details on the concert.  The first concert has finished its tour, and I would assume this new concert will go on tour as well.  I really hope they make it to Cleveland someday, as I would dearly love to see it.
6433  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden Tactics on: April 29, 2005, 07:39:30 AM
RPGFan has the news that Konami has registered the trademark "Suikoden Tactics" in the US.  Hopefully, we'll get to see this at E3.
6434  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Square Enix E3 lineup on: April 29, 2005, 06:46:31 AM
I'm about 30 hours into Star Ocean, and I love everything about it.  It is slow to get started, but everything, including the graphics and voice acting improve a lot once the prologue section is done.  The most amazing thing is the attention to detail.  There are hundreds of topics in the on-line dictionary detailing the backstory of the game, and every building is packed with little details.  Assuming things hold up, I think it's going to end up topping FFX as my favorite RPG ever.

In other Square E3 news, they're putting on another concert around the time of E3, as with last year's Dear Friends concert.  This new concert will feature a performance of the opera music from FF6, and CDs of both shows will be available at the concert.  I really hope they plan to sell the CDs in stores, because I would love to have them.
6435  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Snowblind gets Dark Alliance rights on: April 29, 2005, 03:27:30 AM
According to Worthplaying, Interplay has sold the Dark Alliance rights to Snowblind.  They lost the D&D connection, so it's just the name, but it's pretty easy to guess now what their next game is going to be slywink
6436  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Square Enix E3 lineup on: April 28, 2005, 12:34:03 AM
Square had an "off" year or two while they recovered from the Spirits Within disaster and expanded (mostly unsuccessfully) into other genres.  Thankfully, that time is over.  The three big upcoming releases - FF12, Dragon Quest 8, and Kingdom Hearts 2 all look amazing, as do their lesser-known games like Radiata Stories and Grandia 3.  Their non-RPGs may be iffy at best, but I think in the next year or two we're going to see some awesome RPGs from them.
6437  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Flagship Studios finally announces project...Hellgate:London on: April 27, 2005, 10:31:44 PM
"Diablo 2 was at first limited to pixelated 800x600 mode."
Didn't it start off at 640x480 and then get bumped up by the expansion pack?

The game looks like loads of fun to me.  Even with its problems, I haven't found a game that does the Diablo forumla better than Diablo 2.  Flagship has said they intend to keep it an RPG first, so there will be no ammo to worry about, and the FPS controls will be simplified (targetting aids, etc) and be based on your stats and equipment.
6438  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Atlus E3 lineup on: April 26, 2005, 09:20:24 PM
There's a trailer for Magna Carta at GameTrailers and a website for the game here.  It looks like there will be some sort of Judgment Ring system, since the website lists "A new input system called ‘trinity drive’ which is as if one does rhythm action" as one of the features.
6439  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Atlus E3 lineup on: April 26, 2005, 06:58:39 PM
According to RPGFan Atlus will be showing Digital Devil Saga 2 and Magna Carta : Tears of Blood.  There are some screenshots of Magna Carta at RPGamer.  I don't know anything about it, but it looks very nice and one of the screenshots shows what appears to be a Judgment Ring-style meter.
6440  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Square Enix E3 lineup on: April 26, 2005, 06:40:37 PM
I'm hoping we'll get a nice surprise and they'll announce DQ8 for this summer.  If Radiata Stories is coming out in the fall, KH2 presumably before Christmas, and FF12 next spring, there aren't many options for DQ8's release.  Hopefully, the unfortunate lack of voice acting in DQ8 means a quick localization.
