6321  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Toys R Us Clearance on: August 14, 2005, 10:50:57 PM
Toys R Us is having a big store-wide 50% off clearance, and there are some video and PC games included.  I picked up Demon Stone for PS2 for $10, and there were quite a few others marked down as well.
6322  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 4 min Grandia 3 Intro Video - No Japanese skill required on: August 14, 2005, 07:09:00 PM
SquareEnix hasn't officially announced a US release, but I'd say it's a sure thing.  It will probably be released in the US either next spring or summer.
6323  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sigma Star Saga on: August 14, 2005, 09:42:36 AM
I've got in pre-ordered.  As far as the RPG elements, it plays like a standard action-RPG.  You traverse different planets, attacking enemies with your gun, and get pulled into random battles.  When you trigger a random battle, you enter a side-scrolling space shooter segment.  Killing enemy ships gets you experience, but I'm not sure if it's your ships or your character that you level-up with the experience.  I love RPG/other genre hybrids, and early reviews are very positive.  With this and Dungeon Siege 2, it's going to be a very fun week for me smile
6324  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 14, 2005, 07:05:00 AM
"I mean, if I read the Gamespot review right, DS2 stays trivial, regardless of what difficulty you play it on."
To me, it sounded like they didn't actually play on the harder difficulties, as the comments about them are very general.  (This isn't a criticism of the review, as I don't think you'd have to do so to provide a proper review of the game.)  However, other articles I've read about the game make it sound rather difficult, and I've already died a few times in the demo after getting overwhelmed by enemies.

The depth in Diablo 2 comes about due to the differing enemies - different attack styles, resistances, etc.  DS2 has all these things, and more.  Each character doesn't have as many skills as a single character in D2, but you're controlling 4-6, rather than 1.  It remains to be seen in DS2 becomes difficult enough to necessitate using these as D2 does in the harder difficulty levels, but the potential is certainly there.
6325  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Hold the Phones guys, Xbox 360 Hard Drive not included? on: August 13, 2005, 04:09:07 AM
From the Game Informer interview, it sounds like having two versions is pretty much a done deal; it's only a matter of when they do it.  They've told developers not to count on the hard drive always being there.  I don't really see what the appeal of a non-hard drive version would be, though.  Unless it's much less expensive (more than $50 cheaper), what would be the point?  You'd have to buy some sort of memory for it, presumably at $20-$30 that would hold a fraction of the amount of data of the hard drive.
6326  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 13, 2005, 01:25:17 AM
"The only part that puzzles me is that bit about teleporting back to town- that's what pets are for, hauling your crap so you don't need to go back to town."
It looks like pets are more like regular party members in DS2 rather than just for transporting your gear.  Since they count toward your four-member party limit, you'll probably want them around for every battle.  I'd imagine you still can send them back to town if you want, though.
6327  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Untold Legends 2 on: August 13, 2005, 12:03:29 AM
The new Game Informer has a preview of the sequel to the PSP's Untold Legends.  It's called Warrior's Code, and will feature a new, more distinctive art style, 5 character classes, each with a weapon specific to them and 15 skills, and premade levels, rather than the randomly-generated ones of the first game.  RPGamer also has the details here.
6328  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 12, 2005, 11:10:16 PM
I assume that comment is referring to the fact that they thought the game was easy, not that you don't have options for fighting.  From what I've seen of the demo, there's at least as much potential for strategy in DS2 as in Diablo 2 - you have four characters, enemies with different methods of attacking, resistances, and stats, and even "hates" where enemies will target your players for using potions or skills in their sight.  DS2 even has the little health bar over the enemy, listing its weakness, similar to the Diablo games.  I would assume you need to use more strategy on the harder levels.
6329  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest 8 site launched on: August 12, 2005, 06:29:17 AM
It's hard to explain the appeal of Dragon Quest.  The battles are pretty simplistic, as are the stories.  The first four games had only bare-bones characters.   The games are just fun to play, though.  I've been replaying the Gameboy remakes of the original games, and they're still fun to play today, despite their simplicity.

As for DQ8, the main draw is the large, explorable world  - something that fewer and fewer modern RPGs have, although they seem to be making a comeback.  Also, the quest is long, and the graphics feature great cel-shading, similar to Dark Cloud 2 from the same developer.  Personally, I prefer the story-based FF games, but Dragon Quest was my first RPG and will always be special to me.

"One game you forgot which is coming out in the next month or two is Advance Wars: Dual Strike. Although I'm not sure about the "real-time" part of the gameplay. Anyone know more about that?"

There's a preview at 1Up that explains the new real-time action mode in the game.

6334  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest 8 site launched on: August 10, 2005, 07:03:32 PM
SquareEnix has launched a teaser site for Dragon Quest 8 here.  All it features now is the E3 trailer, though.  They've also launched a fansite - Slime Knights, where you can earn mini-medals toward getting exclusive movies and screenshots, and even actual DQ merchandise.  I even made my first bit of fanart to get some points - Here it is in all its MSPaint glory slywink

It looks like SquareEnix is going all out with the marketing, including a mall tour, that is, alas, not coming anywhere near me.
6335  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Tales of Legendia - Great soundtrack & trailer inside on: August 10, 2005, 06:59:59 PM
Yes - the US release is set for early next year.  I wish we were getting Tales of Rebirth as well, but I guess that's not going to happen.  Tales of The Abyss is 3D, so hopefully, that will get a US release as well.
6336  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 unofficially confirmed for US release on: August 10, 2005, 05:27:30 AM
"Let's hope it isn't Working Designs. Otherwise you can look forward to seeing it released around the same time as the PS3. "
You mean PS4, don't you? slywink

I'm going to guess the publisher will be Atlus.  The game is a good fit for them - combining the two things they're known for - dark, serious games and "wacky" games.  Plus, their last announced game (Magna Carta) comes out in November/December, so they have nothing announced for next year yet.  Presumably, Devil Summoner will be coming to the US (interestingly enough, set in a similar time period to Shadow Hearts), but that leaves the rest of the year free.  Namco is also a possibility, as they continued the Arc the Lad series by bringing End of Darkness to the US.  That series has a pretty small fanbase, so they might be willing to take on the SH series.  They already have Tales of Legendia coming in spring, and possibly Tales of the Abyss in the fall, so SH might be a good summer release for them.

It is - it's coming out in November.  I can't wait!
6338  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 unofficially confirmed for US release on: August 09, 2005, 09:38:28 PM
There's another post by this person at GameFAQs explaining how SH1 and 2 did, and why Midway isn't doing SH3 - here.
6339  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dead or Alive and Mortal Combat questions on: August 09, 2005, 07:14:26 PM
MK : Deception has a ton of single-player kontent.  There's the standard arkade mode, a pretty bland story mode that's supposed to take upwards of 20-30 hours, 400 items to unlock, as well as full-fledged minigames Chess Kombat (like chess with fighting MK pieces) and Puzzle Kombat, a Tetris-style game.
6340  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / It's August: 2005 nearly 3/4 over: What's your GOTY? on: August 09, 2005, 07:09:21 PM
Right now, I'd say either Jade Empire or Digital Devil Saga.  I haven't finished either, so it depends on how they hold up.  Come December, it will probably be either Dragon Quest 8 or Digital Devil Saga 2.
6341  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 unofficially confirmed for US release on: August 09, 2005, 07:01:28 PM
A representative from Midway, who decided to pass on localizing Shadow Hearts 3, posted this at the GameFAQs message board -
Quote
SH3 WILL get released here in NA (and also most likely in Europe as well), but just not by Midway. Some other company has picked this title up and I'm sure they will do a great job localizing it.

I'm pretty sure this is legit, given the other posts made by this person.  Hopefully, we'll get official confirmation soon.
6342  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dead or Alive and Mortal Combat questions on: August 09, 2005, 06:09:27 AM
I've tried a lot of fighting games, and Mortal Kombat is definitely one of the simplest and easy to get into.  Generally, in the tutorials going over the characters' moves, I can get them to work on the first few tries.  Also, I wouldn't let anyone from Midway see your post - If they catch anyone spelling kombat with a "c", they send out their goon squad to teach them a lesson slywink
6343  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Riviera gets another shipment on: August 09, 2005, 12:54:00 AM
According to RPGamer, Atlus has shipped another batch of Riviera for the GBA to stores.  It's a great game, so if you missed out on the first shipment, now would be the time to get it.
6344  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are your top 3 console games of ALL-TIME? on: August 09, 2005, 12:48:04 AM
I really like Actraiser 1, too, but Soul Blazer just "clicked" with me.  The underwater level was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen in a game, and I preferred the more action-RPG combat of SB to Actraiser's more straight-up action combat.  Hopefully, SquareEnix will make both games available to download on the Revolution.
6345  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [DS] Thirteen upcoming games to watch... on: August 09, 2005, 12:44:05 AM
It's the Japanese Final Fantasy 3, and assuming it comes to the States, will finally complete the main-line FF series in the US.  SquareEnix announced it a while ago, but haven't really said much about it since.
6346  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Viewtiful Joe question on: August 08, 2005, 08:12:55 AM
" Basically, it's pride and respect on the line"
Well, I'm playing on Sweet difficulty level (a notch below Kids), so obviously, I have neither of those slywink
6347  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Viewtiful Joe question on: August 08, 2005, 06:13:45 AM
"I cant help you with that but if you see another can you get it and ship it to me?"
Sorry, they only had one.  They rarely have console games on clearance, so I was surprised they had it, and even more surprised at the price.
6348  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Viewtiful Joe question on: August 08, 2005, 04:17:38 AM
I picked up Viewtiful Joe for the PS2 (on clearance at Target for $2.54   ) and was wondering how running out of lives is handled.  When you run out of lives, are you given more or do you have to reload a save with the number of lives you had when you saved?  I lost a couple lives fighting the second boss, and I'm wondering if I should reload and try to get through the battle without dying in order to save my lives for later on.
6349  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [DS] Thirteen upcoming games to watch... on: August 08, 2005, 04:13:25 AM
There's also Final Fantasy 3 and Lunar : Dragon Song.

"Also to note, there's apparently a Secret of Mana game that might be tentatively titled World of Mana in the works."
From what I understand, SquareEnix announced at their party event that "World of Mana" is the collective name for a group of games across many platforms that will relaunch the "Mana" series.  Presumably, the DS will be one of the platforms.
6350  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 08, 2005, 04:10:45 AM
In "Ironman" mode, if you die, your character is gone, i.e. your saves for the character are deleted.  Other than the Rogue/Nethack type text games, the only ones I can think of that implement this are Diablo 2, Dungeon Hack, and Warlords Battlecry 2 and 3.  I'd never play this way myself, but it's a nice option for the crazy people who do slywink

6352  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are your top 3 console games of ALL-TIME? on: August 07, 2005, 07:00:11 AM
1. Final Fantasy X - I'll second Rage's comments, and add that the game has probably the best ending I've ever seen.  It's been 2 years since I finished it, and there are parts I still remember as if I played them yesterday.

2. Dragon Warrior 3 - I got Dragon Warrior 1 for a Christmas gift (it was free with a Nintendo Power subscription) and have been hooked on RPGs ever since.  I remember a preview for DW3 in Nintendo Power had a map of the world, and I just stared at it, filled with anticipation at being able to visit all those places.  I'm playing it again on the GBA, and despite its simplicity, it's still fun.

3. Soul Blazer - It was a toss-up between this and Dark Cloud 2, both city-builders/RPGs.  Dark Cloud 2 is the better game, but Soul Blazer wins for nostalgia's sake, and because I've played it four times and could probably play it again today and enjoy it just as much.

This list will probably change soon, as I'm currently playing through a few games that will be contenders for the list after I finish them.
6353  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Level 5 (Dark Cloud, DQ8) announces Rogue Galaxy on: August 06, 2005, 07:23:17 AM

6357  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dungeon Siege II: Anyone care? on: August 05, 2005, 06:03:30 AM
I don't get it either.  It seems like they went out of their way to improve everything else and make it user-friendly and fun to play, and then they drop in a terrible save system.  Did they look at all the negative feedback it got in Diablo 2 and say "Hey, that could be just as unpopular in our game!"?  I didn't really mind it in Diablo 2 since the monsters respawned and you were at least earning experience while fighting them again.  Here, you just have the tedious task of running back through empty areas to where you already were.  Also, it wrecks whatever immersion the increased emphasis on story creates.

In a randomly-generated gameplay-based game like Diablo 2, it kind of makes sense, but in a game like Dungeon Siege 2, this type of save system makes absolutely no sense.  I just hope there is enough negative feedback about it that it will get changed before the game's release.  I can't imagine anyone preferring this system over the traditional save system.

I also don't get the M rating.  The enemies exploding into chunks after a special attack is kind of fun to watch, but why limit your audience for such a small addition?  It really makes you wonder what developers are thinking sometimes.
6358  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / This makes me very happy (We Love Katamari) on: August 05, 2005, 03:18:32 AM
Well, it's certainly quirky.  It's also really ugly.  I'd say it looks like a child's drawing, but even children have better color sense than that slywink
6359  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Need an action rpg recommendation for Xbox on: August 05, 2005, 03:16:22 AM
A week or two ago, Lionhead announced that The Lost Chapters will also be released on the XBox, and will go directly into the Platinum Hits line for $20.  I think Jade Empire is by far the best of the action-RPGs, but it is definitely epic.  I'll second the recommendation for Sudeki - it's pretty simple, and has   a great art style as well.
