6241  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What the heck are you getting this week? (Week of October 3) on: October 03, 2005, 10:35:27 AM
I'll be getting DDS 2 as well, although I won't be playing it for awhile.  I'm only about halfway through the first, and definitely want to finish it first.
6242  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bioware 2005-10-04 on: October 03, 2005, 10:33:07 AM
On Bioware's home page, there's a little flashing sign reading "2005-10-04".  Presumably, they will be announcing something then.  Hopefully, it will be their unannounced console title, but given the lameness of these recent countdown events, it will probably be another NWN module.
6243  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Civ IV: A bit concerned on: October 03, 2005, 03:46:37 AM
"I have faith in Sid but I hope this doesn't end up looking like a mass-market boardgame."
I may be wrong, but I don't think Sid Meier had much to do with Civ 4 or Civ 3.
6244  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Jade Empire 14.99 on: October 02, 2005, 09:20:51 AM
It's worth every bit of the $50 I paid for it.
6245  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FF4 GBA Famitsu Scans on: October 01, 2005, 01:24:22 AM
According to RPGamer, Nintendo and Square Enix are interested in bringing more FF games to the GBA, presumably meaning FF5 and FF6.
6246  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox360 gets another RPG - Magna Carta 2 on: September 30, 2005, 08:36:31 AM
I'm not sure who Bill Gates in sleeping with to get all these companies to put their RPGs on the 360, but it's apparently working slywink  According to RPGamer, the sequel to the PS2's soon-to-be-released Magna Carta is headed to the 360.  There will also be a port of the PS2 game on the PSP.
6247  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bethesda guarantees Oblivion for XBox 360 launch on: September 30, 2005, 03:17:25 AM
Didn't the XBox version of Morrowind have some pretty big bugs, even though it was released after the PC version?
6248  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ubisoft officially jumps the shark on: September 29, 2005, 08:54:05 PM
They're publishing a dancing game, just like several other companies have done.  Why is this bad  :?:
6249  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Disgaea 2 and Ys Strategy rumors on: September 29, 2005, 08:58:49 AM
RPGamer has some details for Disgaea 2.
6250  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS RPG from Killer 7 creator on: September 28, 2005, 11:05:12 PM
It's called Contact, and according to the info at Gamespot, it sounds like it could be interesting.
6251  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / World of Mana (partially) revealed on: September 28, 2005, 07:43:39 PM
According to RPGamer, Square Enix has announced some details for their upcoming group of "Mana" games, collectively called "World of Mana".  There's Children of Mana for the DS (picture here) and Seiken Densetsu 4, a 3D game for an unspecified platform (picture here).
6252  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lunar: Dragon Song on: September 28, 2005, 07:18:59 PM
Since enemies are visible, you can run past them to avoid fighting them.  The HP loss is supposed to prevent you from doing this and avoiding the fights.  It's a dumb solution, but thankfully, the reviews say that it become irrelevant once you've gone up some levels.
6253  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Blockbuster - 25% off used games on: September 28, 2005, 05:23:27 PM
My Blockbuster/Gamerush has a very large selection, too.
6254  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Disgaea 2 and Ys Strategy rumors on: September 28, 2005, 10:38:06 AM
According to RPGamer, rumors are circulating that both Disgaea 2 and an Ys strategy game for the DS will be announced in the next Famitsu, a Japanese magazine.
6255  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lunar: Dragon Song on: September 28, 2005, 06:06:18 AM
I love the Lunar series, and will definitely be getting this as soon as I buy a DS.  None of the problems seem all that bad, and it sounds like the highlights of the series (the characters and story) are still there.
6256  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 4 min Grandia 3 Intro Video - No Japanese skill required on: September 27, 2005, 06:40:00 PM
EB has put up a listing for Grandia 3.  They may not be accurate with release dates, but sites don't generally put up a listing for a game unless they have confirmation that it's coming to the US.  Hopefully, we'll get an official announcement soon.
6257  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Is the last season of Enterprise worth watching? on: September 27, 2005, 11:03:07 AM
I believe the current plan is to bring Trek back in two years, either with a new movie (with new people, presumably) or a TV series.  Whether this is true, or just an attempt to soothe angry fans, I don't know.

"I did see the Riker/Troi "epilogue", as well as the two episodes set in an alternate WW2 universe; is the stuff inbetween any good?"
Well, you saw the worst, now watch the rest slywink  And, if that final episode is still on your Tivo, smash the unit into a million bits and buy a new one.  There's no other way to get rid of the taint of that insulting piece of crap.  I'm still amazed the actors had the professionalism to actually perform the episode.
6258  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest 8 free demo available on: September 27, 2005, 08:39:06 AM
Square Enix has updated their DQ8 site with a form to sign up for a free demo of the game here.
6259  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Worst Game You've Played this Gen? on: September 27, 2005, 03:03:48 AM
Anyone else find a lot of their favorite games on these lists?  Final Fantasy X (and somewhat X-2), Jade Empire, KoTOR 1 and 2, and Star Ocean 3 (which I think has some of the BEST voice acting I've ever heard) are on my list of the best games of this generation.  Then again, I've only ever played maybe one or two RPGs that I really didn't like, so perhaps I'm not the harshest judge in the world slywink
6260  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Breath of Fire IV: Yea or Nay? on: September 26, 2005, 07:42:08 PM
Check out the reviews at GameFAQs.  Usually, you can get a pretty good idea of the general feeling toward a game with the reviews there.
6261  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Breath of Fire IV: Yea or Nay? on: September 26, 2005, 06:58:54 PM
"IV (for the PS1), on the other hand, is widely considered to be a horribly generic FF7 clone."
Are you thinking of some other game?  Other than the fact that they're both RPGs with white-haired villains, I don't know of any similarities between BoF4 and FF7  :?:  Reviews averaged about 8/10, and it seems like it's considered a good, solid, but unremarkable RPG.
6262  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Breath of Fire IV: Yea or Nay? on: September 26, 2005, 10:28:41 AM
I've played about halfway through, and I'd say it's above average.  It's nothing spectacular, but it's got some interesting characters, and the character graphics are very nice.  Also, being able to switch characters in and out during battle is always a plus.
6263  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 unofficially confirmed for US release on: September 26, 2005, 10:23:44 AM
I think the setting and characters will be enough to offset any problems the game may have.  I wish they had continued with the characters from the first two games, especially since starting fresh apparently didn't have any affect on sales.  BTW, there are some roundtable discussions with the developers at Gamespy and IGN.
6264  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Digital Devil Saga 2 coming October 4 on: September 26, 2005, 05:09:11 AM
I don't know for sure, but I doubt they'd change the encounter rate.  I think it's just the way the Shin Megami Tensei series works, and I don't think they'd change it for this game.  Although it occasionally gets annoying, I actually like the high encouter rate.  It gives the game an "old-school" feel that, along with the "new-school" setting and presentation, makes for a fascinating experience.
6265  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Which Prince of Persia 2 version is the least buggy? on: September 26, 2005, 05:03:28 AM
In the Gamespot review, they mentioned that the Gamecube version didn't have the bugs they experienced with the PS2 and XBox versions.  I loved Sands of Time, but the absurd ass-hanging out outfit the female enemy was wearing and the Prince's "You b@#$!" comment in the demo were enough to convince me to stay far, far away from Warrior Within.
6266  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Digital Devil Saga 2 coming October 4 on: September 25, 2005, 09:26:21 AM
I loved Coordinate 136.  It's one of my all-time favorite dungeons in an RPG.  That and the cutscene after finishing the Citadel (with Mick and Jinana) are the best moments of the game so far.
6267  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Digital Devil Saga 2 coming October 4 on: September 25, 2005, 07:10:55 AM
According to RPGamer, Atlus has announced that Digital Devil Saga 2 will ship October 4.  I'm absolutely loving the first one, but it doesn't look like I'll be done with it by the time the sequel comes out.  BTW, for those who have finished it, I'm doing the Deserted Ship area now, so about how far am I through the game?
6268  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Total Overdose Demo on: September 25, 2005, 07:07:19 AM
It was a lot of fun, but I'm hoping the lack of quicksave/quickload was just due to its being a demo.  I loved Serious Sam and Max Payne, which this game seems like a crazy melding of, but there's no way I'd be able to play either without tons of saving/loading.
6269  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy XII Famitsu Scans (56k) on: September 23, 2005, 06:50:31 PM
The Japanese release date is March 26, so probably summer or fall for the US, assuming they're heavily into working on the localization.  I really like all the different facial expressions from the in-game graphics shots.  It should really add to the emotion of the story.  BTW, the new character is a boy named Ramon, and he is supposed to be one of the playable characters.
6270  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Serious Sam 2 Demo! on: September 23, 2005, 08:50:05 AM
I was very impressed, too - it was a ton of fun.  It would be nice if it were $20, but it looks to be longer than the first two games combined, and much more varied in terms of scenery and enemies, so $30 is certainly reasonable.
6271  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST Season 2 Premier Tonight on: September 23, 2005, 01:48:19 AM
" I don't know, maybe it was the mesmerizingly awful wig Matthew Fox wore the whole time that distracted me."
I think that was Scott Baio's old hair from Charles in Charge slywink
6272  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone replaying FF7? on: September 23, 2005, 01:21:07 AM
"Kevin, what do you recommend to get around the graphics-whore prejudice and the very slow opening-eveyr time I try to play the first 2 hours or so just bore me to tears"
Watch the FF7 intro tech demo that Square made, and then pretend the rest of the game is using those same graphics slywink  Either that, or wait 5 years or so for the the PS3 remake.
6273  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone replaying FF7? on: September 22, 2005, 06:44:04 PM
Thanks - I didn't remember having this issue the first time I played, but I also forgot that the game doesn't support analog control.
6274  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone replaying FF7? on: September 22, 2005, 11:39:37 AM
I'm replaying Final Fantasy 7 in preparation for Advent Children, but I have a  strange problem.  The PS1 memory card I'm saving games on is now full, with FF7 taking up the final slot. However, when I go to save in the game, it shows all 15 slots as empty and able to be saved into. In most games, full slots are marked as unavailable when you go to save, but for some reason, FF7 is showing them as empty.  If anyone else is playing it, could you check when you save and see what it says for the save slots?  I'm worried I'll forget the memory card is full, and inadvertantly overwrite another game's save.
6275  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST Season 2 Premier Tonight on: September 22, 2005, 10:47:37 AM
"Was there any particular reason Locke didn't wait until daylight to go down the hatch or was he just impatient?"
He's obsessed with discovering what's going on, to the point of (unknowingly) sending Boone to his death.  The character reminds me of Sloan on Alias, and I'm guessing we'll eventually see Locke go down the same path of obsession that Sloan did with Rambaldi.  Locke seems wise and sane on the island, but we saw in flashbacks that, not long before he got on the plane, he was delusional to the point of actually thinking a phone sex operator was in love with him.
6276  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Looking for the DQ VIII demo on: September 22, 2005, 08:32:39 AM
The full DQ8 site is due to go live soon, and they are supposed to have signups to have the demo sent to you for free when it does.
6277  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 21, 2005, 10:02:57 PM
Final Fantasy XII is set for release in Japan on March 26, and Kingdom Hearts 2 is scheduled for Japanese release on December 22.  I'm guessing both are being localized as the games are being developed.  I'd guess the US releases will be spring for KH2 and fall for FF12, with hopefully Grandia 3 in the summer.
6278  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 21, 2005, 06:42:04 PM
The great RPG-related news just keeps on coming this week  biggrin
6279  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xbox rpg questions on: September 21, 2005, 06:35:02 PM
The only traditional console RPG for XBox that I know of is Lord of The Rings : The Third Age, which is based on the gameplay of Final Fantasy X, and it's also available on the PS2.  Star Wars : KoTOR 1 and 2 are more like console RPGs than they are PC RPGs, but are different enough to not really fit the category of traditional console RPG.  There are a ton for the PS2, and at least 25 more coming before the end of the PS2's life cycle.  Apparently, MS realized lack of RPGs was a problem on the XBox,  as there are already at least 4 traditional console RPGs in the works for the 360.
6280  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden 1 and 2 coming to PSP on: September 20, 2005, 10:39:27 PM
According to RPGamer, Konami has announced that they won't be bringing this to the US frown  I really don't get why, as it certainly wouldn't have involved much work to localize it, given that the games were already translated.
