6241  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [XB360] Oblivion - Collectors Edition - $69.99 on: September 16, 2005, 07:44:17 AM
"I am getting embarrased by the number of spelling and grammatical errors"
You mean embarrassed?  biggrin
6242  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden 1 and 2 coming to PSP on: September 16, 2005, 07:02:13 AM
The teaser site for Suikoden 1 and 2 for PSP is here.  I already have both for PSOne, but it's nice that people will be able to play these without spending $100 or whatever for them.
6243  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy IV for GBA on: September 16, 2005, 01:36:54 AM
I read that, up through FF6, the odd FF games were gameplay-centered, while the even ones were story-centered.  Thus, 2, 4, and 6 all made big leaps in story presentation over what was standard at the time, and 1, 3, and  5 all had more in-depth gameplay systems, such as FF5's job system.
6244  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [XB360] Oblivion - Collectors Edition - $69.99 on: September 16, 2005, 01:31:15 AM
"I guess if we presuem that360 games will all be 60"
At least some of them won't be - Microsoft announced the price of Perfect Dark Zero as only $50.
6245  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Revolution's revolution a tilt controller? on: September 16, 2005, 01:29:20 AM
"The biggest killer was that using the controller was a lot more fatiguing then just pushing analog sticks, as you had to suspend it. It takes a lot more arm/wrist movement with a tilt controller."
That's true.  I've used a tilt controller, and it was very awkward.  You can't just hold it like a regular controller.  You have to hold it out and away from you, not resting comfortably on your lap.  You also have to hold it level, lest you cause unintended movement.  Maybe it was just a bad controller, but I hope this isn't what the Revolution controller will be.
6246  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy IV for GBA on: September 15, 2005, 06:56:05 PM
"And back then, Square believed that the story and gameplay was more important than the graphics. Nowadays, they just focus on the pretty pictures and over-abundance of CGI footage."
It's been 8 years since FF7, and people are still talking about the story and getting excited about a movie based on the characters.  FF7-X all featured involved, lengthy stories with developed characters, and (mostly) solid gameplay.  I can understand a personal preference for the older games, but I don't think anything has changed at Square.  Yes, the graphics are much better, but neither story nor gameplay has ever suffered because of it.
6247  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xenosaga 3, Baten Kaitos 2 announced on: September 15, 2005, 07:56:49 AM
IGN has some more info on BK2, including some returning characters, here.
6248  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xenosaga 3, Baten Kaitos 2 announced on: September 15, 2005, 05:55:33 AM
There are scans of the Baten Kaitos 2 article here and one for Xenosaga DS here.
6249  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 15, 2005, 02:10:03 AM
I got mine for pre-ordering at Gamestop, and they rarely get the pre-order goodies.
6250  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy IV for GBA on: September 15, 2005, 12:30:52 AM
In yet more RPG news, RPGamer has word that Final Fantasy IV is coming to the GBA this December.  Presumably, it will be similar to FF1+2 on GBA, with new stuff added.
6251  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 14, 2005, 11:40:36 PM
Oh, glorious day - I have played the Dragon Quest 8 demo smile  There are two modes - story, which contains a small town, some story elements, and then a large wilderness area and cave, and battle, which is a large open area, where your party can fight monsters and level up.  The graphics are gorgeous, the voice acting is excellent (especially given the myriad of accents used - it fits the game perfectly), the writing/translation is great, and there are cool nostalgic touches sprinkled in the game from previous games in the series.  The battles are fast to load and play out, although at early levels, you're mostly limited to just plain attacks.

There's a great feeling of exploration in the game, from the tons of searchable/breakable objects in towns to the wide-open outside areas.  It feels both old and new.  It still feels like Dragon Quest, but there's nothing about it that seems out-of-date.  The only downside is that the demo is quite long, and you can't save.
6252  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xenosaga 3, Baten Kaitos 2 announced on: September 14, 2005, 09:14:26 PM
US releases are pretty much assured for both games, given the success of both in the US.  Baten Kaitos even sold better in the US than in Japan.  Gamespot has some details on BK2 here.
6253  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Liberty City Stories = Slaps on the face for Jack Thompson on: September 14, 2005, 09:13:49 PM
Wow, that's the lamest comeback since they dropped potatoes outside Dan Quayle's house on Murphy Brown.
6254  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Xenosaga 3, Baten Kaitos 2 announced on: September 14, 2005, 06:41:36 PM
RPGamer has the news that both Xenosaga 3 : Thus Spoke Zarathustra and a sequel to Baten Kaitos for Gamecube are in the works, along with a version of Xenosaga 1 and 2 for the DS.  Also, rather than the 6-part series it was originally planned to be, Xenosaga will end as a trilogy with part 3.
6255  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 14, 2005, 06:38:12 PM
The Dragon Quest series was renamed Dragon Warrior when originally brought to the US due to a trademark issue.  Now that the trademark has expired, SquareEnix is now calling the series Dragon Quest in the US as well.
6256  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Best Buy unload sell (tons in here) on: September 14, 2005, 07:18:51 AM
I picked up Otogi 2 for $10, but that was the only game on the list that my BB had.
6257  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bard's Tale worth 9.99? on: September 13, 2005, 07:44:03 PM
I picked up Bard's Tale for $8 used, and I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would.  I usually don't like difficult games, but here the difficulty makes the game more fun.  Having to time your blocks makes melee combat much more interesting than in the Dark Alliance-type games.
6258  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Trying to stump the RPG experts... on: September 13, 2005, 07:31:59 PM
"Finally, go grab Final Fantasy 4. The Japanese version. The US got Final Fantasy 4 Easy Type"
The Final Fantasy IV in the PSOne's Final Fantasy Chronicles is an English version of the original Japanese "hard type" FF4.
6259  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 13, 2005, 09:50:27 AM
According to a thread at GameFAQs, the English demo is available now.  People have mentioned finding it at Fry's, Shopko, and for pre-ordering at Gamestop.  I'm going to preorder a copy at Gamestop tomorrow and hope I get a demo disc.
6260  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Trying to stump the RPG experts... on: September 12, 2005, 08:47:46 AM
Dragon Warrior 4 is set up in chapters, and in one of them, you play a female warrior (Alena) who hooks up with a male healer (Cristo).  That's the only one I can think of off-hand.
6261  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone getting Radiata Stories? on: September 11, 2005, 07:34:16 AM
Best Buy has it on sale this week for $40.
6262  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FF Advent Children... on: September 11, 2005, 07:22:04 AM
Given that most new movies come out on DVD at around $20, I don't think $30 is outrageous.  $20 would be better, of course, but I imagine first week sales will bring it down to $25.  These are just guesses anyway, until SquareEnix releases a definite price.
6263  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Radiata Stories - $40 at Best Buy on: September 11, 2005, 07:16:42 AM
Best Buy has Radiata Stories on sale this coming week for $40.  I was going to wait and pick it up used in a few weeks, but now I don't have to smile
6264  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FF Advent Children... on: September 11, 2005, 06:20:04 AM
I can't see SquareEnix letting this miss the holiday season, especially since all they have to do is translate it and record the voice acting for the US version.  I'm really hoping they put some effort into the translation.  Their recent games have been well-done, but the FF movie translation was not good, with lots of awkward non-English sounding dialogue.

"But I guess instead of paying 13 bucks for a movie ticket your paying 45 for the movie."
SquareEnix hasn't announced US pricing yet, but Gamestop and EB have $30 for the DVD, which isn't too bad.
6265  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Digital Devil Saga 2 website live on: September 11, 2005, 06:12:02 AM
I'm loving the first one, too, and I'm trying to finish it before DDS2 comes out.  I was hoping they'd pack the soundtrack in with the game like last time since my local stores almost never got the preorder bonus items.  Maybe I'll get lucky this time.
6266  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 10, 2005, 06:00:04 AM
Apparently, they're changing a lot of the names, especially the spells.  Some of them are pretty silly, too, such as "Pop" to leave a dungeon (previously Outside) and "Woosh" as a wind spell (previously Infernos).  I don't really mind them changing the names, but you'd think they could have come up with some better ones than that.
6267  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FF Advent Children... on: September 10, 2005, 05:54:21 AM
When they announced the delay, I believe they gave the new release as "before the holidays", but nothing more concrete.  I would guess December, especially if Kingdom Hearts 2 doesn't make a US release this year.
6268  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 10, 2005, 01:47:43 AM
"He's coming for you."
In the US version of DQ8, the red slimes are now called she-slimes, so apparently they're female.  I have no idea how they check for gender with slimes, though slywink
6269  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FF Advent Children... on: September 10, 2005, 01:39:37 AM
The US version was originall supposed to be released on the same day, but it was delayed a few months.
6270  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 09, 2005, 06:57:50 AM
Speaking of metal slimes, here's the (for now, at least) Japan-only metal slime controller -
6271  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I want Dragon Quest VIII, and I want it now. on: September 09, 2005, 01:35:30 AM
Gamestop has 11/22, but SquareEnix hasn't said anything more specific than "November".  As for being appropriate for a 6-year old, I'm not sure.  It is rated Teen, and the female character has "sex appeal" skills that, at least from what I've read about the Japanese version, can get pretty suggestive.  The violence is presumably pretty cartoony, although some of the cutscenes may be somewhat intense.
6272  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone getting Radiata Stories? on: September 07, 2005, 06:55:28 PM
"And Radiata Stories got assy reviews, so I'll be passing up on this one."
I'm not sure of the exact definition of "assy" slywink, but the reviews range mostly in the 7/10 range, with an 8 from IGN and 4.5/5 from RPGamer on the high end.
6273  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Anyone want a Greatest Hits Final Fantasy X . . . for free? on: September 07, 2005, 06:49:37 PM
FFX-2 is drastically different in tone from FFX.  Where FFX was mostly serious, FFX-2 is usually silly.  Its tone is similar to the recent Charlie's Angels movies.  It's definitely groan-inducing at times, but the mission-based gameplay is great fun, and the job-based battle system is one of the best in the FF series.
6274  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Level 5 (Dark Cloud, DQ8) announces Rogue Galaxy on: September 07, 2005, 09:33:01 AM
RPGamer has some great new scans here.  They also have some details on the battle system here.
6275  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Namco's new RPG - Tales of Abyss coming in 3 months on: September 06, 2005, 10:01:27 PM
The official site here says PS2.
6276  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone getting Radiata Stories? on: September 06, 2005, 08:05:49 PM
Anyone planning on getting Radiata Stories tomorrow?  With all the RPGs coming out before the end of the year, I'm trying to only pay full price for the ones that are likely to become rare quickly, so I'm going to hold off a few weeks on Radiata until I can get it used.  It's from the makers of the spectacular Star Ocean : Till the End of Time, and reviews are ranging from 7.5-8.5.
6277  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Namco's new RPG - Tales of Abyss coming in 3 months on: September 06, 2005, 10:53:04 AM
I don't know why they're producing so many so quickly, but as long as they maintain the standard of quality, I'm glad.  It looks like Tales of Rebirth won't be seeing a US release, but I think Abyss has a good chance for next fall, presuming Tales of Legendia sells well.  There will probably be a long RPG draught for the next-gen consoles (other than Oblivion for the 360), so I'm happy to stock up on as many current-generation titles asI can to tide me over until the next round smile
6278  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New RPG from maker of Atelier Iris - Ar Tonelico on: September 05, 2005, 10:33:30 PM
It is a PS2 game.  NIS America brought Atelier Iris : Eternal Mana from the same developer to the US, so presumably they would be the ones to bring this one over.  They haven't announced whether they're localizing Eternal Mana 2 yet (although I think they will), so I doubt we'll hear anything about this game being released in the US for quite a while.
6279  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New RPG from maker of Atelier Iris - Ar Tonelico on: September 05, 2005, 09:10:01 AM
Yes, that does certainly bear a strong resemblance to their Atelier Iris, although there looks to be some futuristic elements sprinked in.  The backgrounds look very nice, too.  There will probably be a lull in RPGs when the PS3 comes out, so I'm hoping companies will sieze the opportunity and release some of the more niche RPGs like this in the US.  I'm pretty sure Atelier Iris sold decently, so hopefully Eternal Mana 2 and this will be localized.
6280  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Phantasy Star Online on: September 05, 2005, 04:35:32 AM
"Also coming soon is the Sega Ages: Phantasy Star Trilogy...though it's release date is uncertain."
Unfortunately, the latest word is that the game has been dropped by the original publisher.  The Sega Ages remake of PS4 hit some snag in Japan, and hasn't been released yet.  Once they finish that, the game would have to be localized, and then they have to find someone to publish it.  I hope it does eventually get released in the US, but I've pretty much given up on it.
