6081  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Battle.Net = Product Announcement? on: October 08, 2005, 12:30:03 AM
Wow, it sure didn't take very long to outdo the absurb "Origen" XBox360 countdown thing.
6082  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 10/05/05 - HOLY CRAP! on: October 07, 2005, 07:49:56 AM
I thought the training video also mentioned that entering the sequence (or at least using the computer in some way) was a precaution against something bad happening.
6083  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / LOST - 10/05/05 - HOLY CRAP! on: October 06, 2005, 07:51:31 AM
"Jack not telling Locke and Kate "Yeah, I saw him before, a few years back"....heck, Jack should've been saying to everyone, "Hey, I know you! We met back...." the second he recognized him. Why wouldn't he mention it? Anyone have any idea of motivation?"
Jack was extremely freaked out by seeing Desmond there.  It should be impossible for him to find someone he met before, and he can't deal with fact that there's no way it could be a coincidence.  His rational world is falling apart, and telling the others about Desmond would be confirming something that should be impossible.  I liked the parallels of Jack and Locke's breakdowns, with Jack holding a gun on Desmond, and Locke asking the island what he's supposed to do.
6084  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS Conference [it's final, DS > PSP] on: October 05, 2005, 11:48:46 PM
Actually, it's a picture of Bill Gates draped across a Ferrari in a red speedo.  Don't you wish you could see it now?

Mistwalker also announced their DS RPG called ASH.  RPGamer has some details here.  Also, Nintendo announced an RPG based on the Tingle character from Zelda, and Namco announced they are working on a Tales game for the DS.
6085  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS Conference [it's final, DS > PSP] on: October 05, 2005, 11:17:55 PM
I think Miyamoto would still look like that even if he had just found out that the world was going to end slywink

"Do Bill Gates or Ken Kutaragi ever look like they're having this much fun?"
Maybe not, but has Miyamoto ever looked this sexy?
6086  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bioware 2005-10-04 on: October 05, 2005, 10:31:59 PM
There's an interview about the game at Gamespot.  They call the combat similar to KoTOR (you'll have 3 characters), but it will be all real-time and have "aspects of a shooter".  Also, the character you create (you'll have a choice of classes) will go through all 3 games of the series, as in the Baldur's Gate saga.  They also emphasize that it is foremost an RPG.
6087  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Digital Devil Saga 2 impressions (absolutely no spoilers) on: October 05, 2005, 10:22:42 PM
I picked up my pre-order today, but as usual, I didn't get the bonus soundtrack.  I still have to finish up the first one, but I can't wait to get started on it as soon as I do.  Also, from what I've read at GameFAQs, it looks like no one who preordered from EBGames.com or Gamstop.com is getting the soundtrack with their game.
6088  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy 3 for DS in 2006/FF5 and FF6 for GBA announced on: October 05, 2005, 06:52:28 PM
Here's a list of the games and what platforms they're available for in the US -
FF1 - NES, PSOne (Final Fantasy Origins), GBA (FF 1+2 Dawn of Souls)
FF2 - PSOne (Final Fantasy Origins), GBA (FF 1+2 Dawn of Souls)
FF3 - DS (assuming a US release)
FF4 - SNES (as FF2), PSOne (Final Fantasy Chronicles), GBA (coming 2005)
FF5 - PSOne (Final Fantasy Anthology), GBA (assuming US release)
FF6 - SNES (as FF3), PSOne (Final Fantasy Anthology), GBA (assuming US release)
FF7 - FF8 - PSOne, PC
FF9 - PSOne
FFX - FFXII - PS2

RPGamer has some screenshots of FF3 DS here.
6089  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy 3 for DS in 2006/FF5 and FF6 for GBA announced on: October 05, 2005, 11:18:22 AM
That would explain what's taking so long with FF3.  Hopefully, we'll get some screenshots soon.
6090  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bioware 2005-10-04 on: October 05, 2005, 08:59:07 AM
According to IGN, "Microsoft Game Studios Executive Shane Kim and BioWare team members have said in the past that Jade Empire 2 (working title) is definitely in development." and "We have a couple of Xbox 360 titles in development right now," said a BioWare spokesperson. "But we're recruiting across the board for all four development teams. We have two teams working on Xbox 360 titles, one team on Dragon Age (for the PC), and one on digital distribution, which is ongoing content created for Neverwinter Nights."  It seems like Bioware really likes the Jade Empire world they created, so I would think they would rather do the sequel themselves than let someone else handle it.
6091  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bioware 2005-10-04 on: October 05, 2005, 07:12:16 AM
They're calling it an action-RPG with squad-based tactical combat.  That sounds like it will be third-person, with party members you can order around.  Also, given the amazing job they did creating the Jade Empire world, I don't think we have to worry about the gameworld being generic sci-fi.

"Maybe I wanted a Jade Empire sequel, which took me back to the days of Oriental Adventures for D&D."
According to IGN, they're already working on that, too.
6092  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bioware 2005-10-04 on: October 04, 2005, 07:14:24 PM
Worthplaying has some more details here.  They're calling it an action-RPG that "employs a real-time, squad based, tactical combat system"
6093  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rhapsody and Persona 2 in-stock at Gamestop? on: October 04, 2005, 06:57:08 PM
I found a copy of Persona 2 at my local Gamestop yesterday, and although it was being sold as used, it looked brand-new.  I remember that some website was selling new copies of Persona 2 and Rhapsody a while back, so I checked Gamestop's website, and they are listing both games as in-stock online and most stores are showing up as having 1-3 copies.  It's worth checking out if you've been looking for them.
6094  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bioware 2005-10-04 on: October 03, 2005, 07:06:48 PM
If it is an XBox360 game, then it's most likely the FPS/RPG that they've hinted at, although there's a small possibility it could be the rumored Jade Empire 2.
6095  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What the heck are you getting this week? (Week of October 3) on: October 03, 2005, 10:35:27 AM
I'll be getting DDS 2 as well, although I won't be playing it for awhile.  I'm only about halfway through the first, and definitely want to finish it first.
6096  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bioware 2005-10-04 on: October 03, 2005, 10:33:07 AM
On Bioware's home page, there's a little flashing sign reading "2005-10-04".  Presumably, they will be announcing something then.  Hopefully, it will be their unannounced console title, but given the lameness of these recent countdown events, it will probably be another NWN module.
6097  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Civ IV: A bit concerned on: October 03, 2005, 03:46:37 AM
"I have faith in Sid but I hope this doesn't end up looking like a mass-market boardgame."
I may be wrong, but I don't think Sid Meier had much to do with Civ 4 or Civ 3.
6098  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Jade Empire 14.99 on: October 02, 2005, 09:20:51 AM
It's worth every bit of the $50 I paid for it.
6099  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FF4 GBA Famitsu Scans on: October 01, 2005, 01:24:22 AM
According to RPGamer, Nintendo and Square Enix are interested in bringing more FF games to the GBA, presumably meaning FF5 and FF6.
6100  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / XBox360 gets another RPG - Magna Carta 2 on: September 30, 2005, 08:36:31 AM
I'm not sure who Bill Gates in sleeping with to get all these companies to put their RPGs on the 360, but it's apparently working slywink  According to RPGamer, the sequel to the PS2's soon-to-be-released Magna Carta is headed to the 360.  There will also be a port of the PS2 game on the PSP.
6101  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Bethesda guarantees Oblivion for XBox 360 launch on: September 30, 2005, 03:17:25 AM
Didn't the XBox version of Morrowind have some pretty big bugs, even though it was released after the PC version?
6102  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ubisoft officially jumps the shark on: September 29, 2005, 08:54:05 PM
They're publishing a dancing game, just like several other companies have done.  Why is this bad  :?:
6103  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Disgaea 2 and Ys Strategy rumors on: September 29, 2005, 08:58:49 AM
RPGamer has some details for Disgaea 2.
6104  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS RPG from Killer 7 creator on: September 28, 2005, 11:05:12 PM
It's called Contact, and according to the info at Gamespot, it sounds like it could be interesting.
6105  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / World of Mana (partially) revealed on: September 28, 2005, 07:43:39 PM
According to RPGamer, Square Enix has announced some details for their upcoming group of "Mana" games, collectively called "World of Mana".  There's Children of Mana for the DS (picture here) and Seiken Densetsu 4, a 3D game for an unspecified platform (picture here).
6106  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lunar: Dragon Song on: September 28, 2005, 07:18:59 PM
Since enemies are visible, you can run past them to avoid fighting them.  The HP loss is supposed to prevent you from doing this and avoiding the fights.  It's a dumb solution, but thankfully, the reviews say that it become irrelevant once you've gone up some levels.
6107  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Blockbuster - 25% off used games on: September 28, 2005, 05:23:27 PM
My Blockbuster/Gamerush has a very large selection, too.
6108  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Disgaea 2 and Ys Strategy rumors on: September 28, 2005, 10:38:06 AM
According to RPGamer, rumors are circulating that both Disgaea 2 and an Ys strategy game for the DS will be announced in the next Famitsu, a Japanese magazine.
6109  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lunar: Dragon Song on: September 28, 2005, 06:06:18 AM
I love the Lunar series, and will definitely be getting this as soon as I buy a DS.  None of the problems seem all that bad, and it sounds like the highlights of the series (the characters and story) are still there.
6110  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 4 min Grandia 3 Intro Video - No Japanese skill required on: September 27, 2005, 06:40:00 PM
EB has put up a listing for Grandia 3.  They may not be accurate with release dates, but sites don't generally put up a listing for a game unless they have confirmation that it's coming to the US.  Hopefully, we'll get an official announcement soon.
6111  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Is the last season of Enterprise worth watching? on: September 27, 2005, 11:03:07 AM
I believe the current plan is to bring Trek back in two years, either with a new movie (with new people, presumably) or a TV series.  Whether this is true, or just an attempt to soothe angry fans, I don't know.

"I did see the Riker/Troi "epilogue", as well as the two episodes set in an alternate WW2 universe; is the stuff inbetween any good?"
Well, you saw the worst, now watch the rest slywink  And, if that final episode is still on your Tivo, smash the unit into a million bits and buy a new one.  There's no other way to get rid of the taint of that insulting piece of crap.  I'm still amazed the actors had the professionalism to actually perform the episode.
6112  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest 8 free demo available on: September 27, 2005, 08:39:06 AM
Square Enix has updated their DQ8 site with a form to sign up for a free demo of the game here.
6113  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Worst Game You've Played this Gen? on: September 27, 2005, 03:03:48 AM
Anyone else find a lot of their favorite games on these lists?  Final Fantasy X (and somewhat X-2), Jade Empire, KoTOR 1 and 2, and Star Ocean 3 (which I think has some of the BEST voice acting I've ever heard) are on my list of the best games of this generation.  Then again, I've only ever played maybe one or two RPGs that I really didn't like, so perhaps I'm not the harshest judge in the world slywink
6114  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Breath of Fire IV: Yea or Nay? on: September 26, 2005, 07:42:08 PM
Check out the reviews at GameFAQs.  Usually, you can get a pretty good idea of the general feeling toward a game with the reviews there.
6115  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Breath of Fire IV: Yea or Nay? on: September 26, 2005, 06:58:54 PM
"IV (for the PS1), on the other hand, is widely considered to be a horribly generic FF7 clone."
Are you thinking of some other game?  Other than the fact that they're both RPGs with white-haired villains, I don't know of any similarities between BoF4 and FF7  :?:  Reviews averaged about 8/10, and it seems like it's considered a good, solid, but unremarkable RPG.
6116  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Breath of Fire IV: Yea or Nay? on: September 26, 2005, 10:28:41 AM
I've played about halfway through, and I'd say it's above average.  It's nothing spectacular, but it's got some interesting characters, and the character graphics are very nice.  Also, being able to switch characters in and out during battle is always a plus.
6117  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shadow Hearts 3 unofficially confirmed for US release on: September 26, 2005, 10:23:44 AM
I think the setting and characters will be enough to offset any problems the game may have.  I wish they had continued with the characters from the first two games, especially since starting fresh apparently didn't have any affect on sales.  BTW, there are some roundtable discussions with the developers at Gamespy and IGN.
6118  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Digital Devil Saga 2 coming October 4 on: September 26, 2005, 05:09:11 AM
I don't know for sure, but I doubt they'd change the encounter rate.  I think it's just the way the Shin Megami Tensei series works, and I don't think they'd change it for this game.  Although it occasionally gets annoying, I actually like the high encouter rate.  It gives the game an "old-school" feel that, along with the "new-school" setting and presentation, makes for a fascinating experience.
6119  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Which Prince of Persia 2 version is the least buggy? on: September 26, 2005, 05:03:28 AM
In the Gamespot review, they mentioned that the Gamecube version didn't have the bugs they experienced with the PS2 and XBox versions.  I loved Sands of Time, but the absurd ass-hanging out outfit the female enemy was wearing and the Prince's "You b@#$!" comment in the demo were enough to convince me to stay far, far away from Warrior Within.
6120  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Digital Devil Saga 2 coming October 4 on: September 25, 2005, 09:26:21 AM
I loved Coordinate 136.  It's one of my all-time favorite dungeons in an RPG.  That and the cutscene after finishing the Citadel (with Mick and Jinana) are the best moments of the game so far.
