6081  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / help me decide which game! on: November 14, 2005, 02:47:07 AM
You can read the whole review (all three paragraphs of it) at GameFAQs.  The other two reviews I've seen were much more positive.
6082  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / FF7 sequel/remake at E3? on: November 13, 2005, 10:46:52 PM
According to RPGamer, Tetsuya Nomura said in an interview that there "would be a very important presentation related to Compilation of Final Fantasy VII at the 2006 Electronics Entertainment Expo."  It's possible that this is in relation to the PSP Crisis Core game, but it's also possible that this will be the oft-rumored FF7 remake (or hopefully sequel) for the PS3.
6083  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest VIII ship date change . . . on: November 12, 2005, 08:53:06 PM
The official website has been updated with new videos, details, and some nice wallpapers, especially the one with the enemies.
6084  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / help me decide which game! on: November 12, 2005, 08:34:28 PM
"Years of Blood" sounds like it might be an interesting title, but it's actually "Tears of Blood" slywink  I haven't played any of them, but Magna Carta is being published by Atlus, so there won't be as many copies to go around as the other two, bigger releases.  If you're worried about availability, I'd go with Magna Carta now, although all 3 sound like great games from what I've heard.
6085  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Famitsu] FFXII Scans (Airship!) on: November 12, 2005, 09:37:20 AM
From what I've read, the battle system sounds very similar to KoTOR.  These latest previews have me very excited.  The game looks beautiful, the battle system is a big change for the series, and I love the whole style of the game.  It's going to be a looooong wait, though.
6086  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Famitsu] FFXII Scans (Airship!) on: November 12, 2005, 07:08:40 AM
I couldn't tell if it's the same music or not, but the summons are called Espers.
6087  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mass Effect details, Jade Empire 2 on: November 12, 2005, 06:50:35 AM
RPGFan has some new details on Bioware's Mass Effect, as well as confirmation that Jade Empire 2 is in the works for the 360.  Jade Empire was such a beautiful game, I can't wait to see what they do with the world on the new hardware.
6088  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mario Kart DS review [ign] on: November 12, 2005, 06:47:18 AM
I wonder why Nintendo puts more content into their handheld titles than their console ones.  The Mario Tennis and Golf games get the RPG treatment on the GBA, but not the consoles, and Mario Kart for the Gamecube was one of the weakest, most half-assed efforts I've seen from them, yet there's a lot more in the DS version.
6089  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Famitsu] Final Fantasy IV Advance Scans on: November 12, 2005, 02:15:38 AM
The FF3 remake is for the DS, while the FF4-6 remakes are for the GBA.  It's nice to see the GBA get some RPG love before it completely dies out, with FF4, FF5, FF6, Tales of Phantasia and (hopefully) Mother 3.
6090  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Famitsu] FFXII Scans (Airship!) on: November 11, 2005, 08:41:38 PM
1Up and RPGamer have the first English screenshots, from the demo.
6091  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Kingdom Hearts 2 world revealed - Wow! on: November 11, 2005, 05:47:52 AM
It's possible the light cycles will show up as a minigame.  It looks like they're pulling out all the stops for this game, so I'm assuming the problems I had with the original, like the constantly respawning enemies and poor game "flow" (i.e. wander back and forth between small areas until you trigger the plot to move forward) have been fixed.  I know the combat has been overhauled, as has the gummi ship, and the game also looks to be massive.  All of the first game's worlds are returning, plus worlds based on Tron, Beauty & The Beast, The Lion King, Mulan, Pirates of The Caribbean, and hopefully some more surprises.
6092  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Kingdom Hearts 2 world revealed - Wow! on: November 10, 2005, 09:04:05 AM
As revealed in the new Shonen Jump -
TRON!
6093  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Magna Carta "confirmed" for November 8th release on: November 10, 2005, 12:06:43 AM
Sounds great.  I just wish I were playing it now rather than waiting until next week frown
6094  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest VIII ship date change . . . on: November 09, 2005, 11:55:49 PM
"I solved the DQ8 or FECubed problem. Yup, I'm getting both. Shocked People said I was crazy, but I showed them."
Hah - Crazy is buying DQ8, Magna Carta, and Wild ARMs Alter Code F all on the same day smile
6095  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I may not get a PS3 - if this is true on: November 09, 2005, 08:34:07 PM
Another day, another obviously false PS3 rumor.  The way things are going, PS3 will come out in 2027, cost $4000, and not actually play any games.
6096  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest VIII ship date change . . . on: November 09, 2005, 09:07:52 AM
Ironically, none of the 3 RPGs being released next week were supposed to be released then.  DQ8 was originally scheduled for the 22nd, but then moved up a week, Magna Carta was scheduled for the 8th, but pushed back a week, and Wild ARMs was delayed several times, finally ending up on the 15th.
6097  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest VIII ship date change . . . on: November 09, 2005, 07:10:28 AM
Gamespot has a very cool new trailer here (Official Trailer 2).  I've read that the fight it shows is near the end of the game, but it's only a spoiler in the sense of what the enemy looks like, not who it is.  There's also some voice acting from Angelo and Jessica, both of whom sound great.
6098  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest VIII ship date change . . . on: November 08, 2005, 08:19:13 PM
There's a thread at GameFAQs with some pictures of the packaging.

One more week!
6099  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / How did Shining Force Neo hold up? on: November 08, 2005, 08:14:30 PM
I haven't played it myself yet, but most of the impressions I've read have been very positive.
6100  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mother 3 (Earthbound 2) announced on: November 08, 2005, 08:46:44 AM
RPGamer has the news that Nintendo has put up a teaser site for Mother 3 for the GBA, a sequel to the wacky SNES RPG Earthbound.
6101  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden Tactics - tomorrow? on: November 08, 2005, 08:42:07 AM
IGN has posted their review with a score of 7.3.
6102  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / SONY PS3 to LAUNCH IN 2007 on: November 08, 2005, 07:08:30 AM
"Everybody keeps mentioning Killzone 2 as a major driving force for the PS3, not just here, but in person as well."
I think Killzone 2 is a PS2 game, whereas the E3 video was supposed to be Killzone 3.  I have no idea if it's any good or not, but the fact that it sold well and Sony is pushing the series is probably why it gets mentioned so much.
6103  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / SONY PS3 to LAUNCH IN 2007 on: November 08, 2005, 03:37:19 AM
I think people are willing to wait for the PS3.  Microsoft will probably pick up some people who would have bought a PS3 instead of a 360 is both were available, but I'll bet most of those people will also get a PS3 when it comes out.  There are still some big exclusive games coming for PS2 next year - Final Fantasy XII and Kingdom Hearts 2 being the biggest, but also Killzone 2, Onimusha 4, Phantasy Star Universe, and Rogue Galaxy.
There's also the Japan factor.  Microsoft is definitely getting somewhere with Japanese developers, but it remains to be seen whether the Japanese consumers will care, and MS will likely only have less than a 6 month head start there.
6104  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Should Nintendo save the new Zelda for the Revolution? on: November 08, 2005, 03:24:07 AM
"I thought all the speculation with the Revolution controller was that Nintendo would be releasing "shells" to make it similar to the current Cube controller so that 3rd party ports can be easily played on the system."
You can just plug a Gamecube controller into the Revolution and use that.
6105  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suikoden Tactics - tomorrow? on: November 07, 2005, 07:26:50 PM
I think Gamespot and Gamespy did some hands-on previews, and both were positive.  I'm not sure what's with the lack of buzz about the game, though.  I know Suikoden 4 was disappointing, but Tactics is looking good.  I'll definitely be getting it eventually, but I want to finish S4 first, and I'm getting DQ8, Magna Carta, and Wild ARMs next week.
6106  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Command & Conquer The First Decade announced on: November 07, 2005, 07:20:59 PM
From the Gamespot article - "allows all of our fans a chance to own a great C&C collection, re-mastered to work on current operating systems".
6107  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Magna Carta "confirmed" for November 8th release on: November 06, 2005, 03:37:27 AM
The best I can tell, from what I've read and seen, there's only one character and one enemy active at a time.  A bar fills, and when it hits a certain point, one of your characters can take an action, and you can choose which character will act.  It works the same way for the enemies, who have their own meter.  As with turn-based systems, the characters/enemies not currently attacking don't figure into it.  It's not like Star Ocean, where all characters and enemies are always active, just one of each at a time.  This probably isn't completely right, but this is how it seems to work in the videos.
6108  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Atlus announces 2 new RPGs on: November 05, 2005, 02:41:27 AM
There's a website for Steambot Chronicles (under the original and much cooler Japanese name "Junk Romance Great Action Bumpy Trot" here.  The screenshots show mechs, rhythm-based musical instrument-playing, pirates, and comboys, and the characters are named after spices (Marjoram, Fennel, etc).  It makes Metal Saga seem almost pedestrian by comparison slywink
6109  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Magna Carta "confirmed" for November 8th release on: November 05, 2005, 02:32:11 AM
Check the first page of this thread - there's a lengthy post describing the battle system.  Also, further down the first page is a link to some videos at etoychest.  One of them shows the battle tutorial from the game, which should also help explain things.
6110  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Atlus announces 2 new RPGs on: November 04, 2005, 08:15:12 PM
Atlus has announced that they're bringing two RPGs to the US - Metal Saga, an RPG which apparently combines driving tanks, an evil supercomputer, and battles both on foot and in tanks, and Steamboat Chronicles whose "non-linear gameplay gives you the freedom to do whatever you want; start a band, help the townspeople, or join a gang of bandits and terrorize them - all with customizable mechs and the industrial revolution!"   There are some screenshots for Metal Saga here and details on both games here.  biggrin
6111  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Magna Carta "confirmed" for November 8th release on: November 04, 2005, 08:12:17 PM
The game has been pushed back a week to November 15th.  This is just crazy - Dragon Quest 8, Final Fantasy 12 demo, Wild ARMs Alter Code F, and Magna Carta all on the same day!
6112  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Magna Carta "confirmed" for November 8th release on: November 04, 2005, 08:56:02 AM
If you've seen the female characters from the game, you know there's absolutely no way to confuse them with the male characters slywink
6113  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Tales of Phantasia GBA coming to US and Europe on: November 04, 2005, 02:35:29 AM
I guess the GBA isn't quite dead yet.  Tales of Phantasia, a GBA remake of the previously Japan-only SNES game, is coming to the US and Europe in March.  RPGFan has the news and there's some details on the game at RPGamer.
6114  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Magna Carta "confirmed" for November 8th release on: November 04, 2005, 02:17:05 AM
"Wow, checking the site out, the music composer - Sung-Woon Jang - has a birthdate of March 1997"
Maybe he's the Doogie Howser of the music world
6115  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Shin Megami Tensei . . . online? on: November 03, 2005, 11:18:35 AM
AFAIK, it's still in development, but the chances of it coming to the US are pretty remote.
6116  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Your choices for best PC game music ever? on: November 03, 2005, 12:21:37 AM
Other than those mentioned, Betrayal At Krondor (the first time I heard CD-quality music) and Total Annihilation stand out in my mind.
6117  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Magna Carta "confirmed" for November 8th release on: November 02, 2005, 03:11:54 AM
RPGamer has a bunch of new English screenshots here.
6118  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kingdom Hearts 2 voice cast on: November 01, 2005, 11:25:13 PM
Worthplaying has a list of some of the actors who will be providing voices for Kingdom Hearts 2.  It looks like the cast from the first game is returning, as well as most of the original voice actors for the new worlds, including the full cast of Pirates of the Caribbean.
6119  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo's Revolution - "No specs for you!!!" on: November 01, 2005, 10:21:29 PM
I don't think Nintendo ever made a big deal about the Gamecube specs, and it's on par with the other current-gen systems.
6120  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Magna Carta "confirmed" for November 8th release on: November 01, 2005, 11:36:43 AM
The voice acting certainly wasn't anywhere near Digital Devil Saga-quality, but it was far from horrible, and 20 second load times aren't bad.  I'm glad they have a nice long explanation of the battle system.  It looks like, once you learn it, it will be a blast, as it combines elements of my favorite RPG battle systems.
