6041  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones on: December 16, 2005, 03:27:42 AM
I loved the actual missions in Sly 2 and Jak 2, but I hated getting to them.  I'm enjoying Ratchet 3 much more, simply because you can just pick a planet and go there.  It's not that hubs can't work, but both Sly 2 and Jak 2 did them so horribly, I've really been turned off to the whole idea.  I haven't played Sly 3 or Jak 3 yet, but I'm hoping both are much improved in this area.
6042  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones on: December 15, 2005, 07:56:21 PM
Personally, I like the focused linearity of the PoP games.  Hub worlds are OK for some games, but they can go horribly wrong, as in Sly 2 and Jak 2.  Both experiences were diluted with frustrating slogs between mission points.
6043  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest 8 prequel announced on: December 15, 2005, 05:08:48 AM
"Unfortunately it looks like DQ8 had a very soft first month at retail"
Really?  I haven't seen any numbers, but everything I've read makes it sound like it's a big hit.  It's been a long time since I've seen an RPG get as much attention (both before and after release) as DQ8 has.
6044  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dragon Quest 8 prequel announced on: December 15, 2005, 02:36:11 AM
According to another article about it, the magazine was V-Jump.

6047  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grandia III official NA release date on: December 14, 2005, 09:00:44 PM
Kingdom Hearts 2 will also have a fast localization - late December in Japan and March or April for the US. FF12 will also probably have a quick turnaround, hopefully less than 6 months.
6048  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grandia III official NA release date on: December 14, 2005, 07:45:50 PM
RPGamer has some beautiful new screenshots here.
It looks like February will be another 3 RPG month, with Grandia 3, Tales of Legendia, and MS Saga : A New Dawn, and then Suikoden 5 in early March.  I never thought I'd say this, but there may be too many RPGs coming out.  I can't keep up smile
6049  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Final Fantasy IV Advance [gba] on: December 13, 2005, 09:13:30 AM
I'll definitely get it eventually, but I'm still working my way through Dawn of Souls, so it will probably be awhile.
6050  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Working Designs closes down on: December 13, 2005, 09:10:35 AM
According to RPGamer, Working Designs, who localized the Lunar series, Arc the Lad Collection, and Growlanser Generations, has shut down.  It's sad to see them go, as they always put a lot of love and effort into the games.  It seems like they just had too few big releases over too long a span of time to keep them afloat.  frown
6051  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows Thread on: December 13, 2005, 07:24:50 AM
Reviews aren't looking good - 5.2 from Gamespot and 2/5 from Yahoo Games.

Next year is going to be amazing when it comes to RPGs, especially considering that it's a transition year between console generations.
6054  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Famitsu - 360] Blue Dragon Scans on: December 10, 2005, 01:54:10 AM
It will be interesting to see how Toriyama's designs translate into non-cel-shaded 3D.

6056  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kingdom Hearts 2 - Official US website on: December 08, 2005, 10:45:22 AM

Worthplaying has bunch of new screenshots here.
6058  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rumor Mill: Valkyrie Profile 2? on: December 07, 2005, 07:49:57 PM
For some reason, the name of the game was cropped out of that image.  In the top right corner, it says Valkyrie Profile : Silmeria.  I don't see why this wouldn't come to the US, given the success of Star Ocean 3 and Radiata Stories.  There's also rumors of a PSP port of the original game.
6059  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grandia 3 English video on: December 07, 2005, 07:04:42 AM
Similar to the Slime Knights page, SquareEnix has opened a fan page for the game here.  It definitely looks like the game is not too far from release smile
6060  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grandia 3 English video on: December 06, 2005, 07:40:18 PM
Rumors are that it's coming in spring, which would make sense given that they just put up the website.  It's looking like Grandia 3 and Kingdom Hearts 2 will be released in back-to-back months, probably with KH2 in March/April and G3 in April/May.
6061  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grandia 3 English video on: December 06, 2005, 07:07:44 AM
There's a teaser site for the English version here with a promise of the official site coming soon.
6062  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The Revolution has begun...(IGN chan, specs, launch date?) on: December 06, 2005, 07:03:36 AM
I know Nintendo isn't big on graphics, but haven't they said that the Revolution will be comparable with the other 2?
6063  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Grandia 3 English video on: December 06, 2005, 02:58:25 AM
For some reason, SquareEnix hasn't made an official announcement yet, but this new video, complete with English text and voiceovers, is pretty convincing evidence that the game is coming to the US.
6064  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Guitar Hero Impressions!!! on: December 06, 2005, 02:52:39 AM
I'm thinking about putting this on my Christmas list, but I have a question first.  The game was developed by the same people who did Frequency and Amplitude.  I liked the part of those games where you matched up notes, but I never really understood the whole "freestyle" thing where you're supposed to play notes without being told which ones.  Does GH have something similar, or are you always following the "notes" on screen?
6065  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / MOO v. MOO2 - Fight! on: December 06, 2005, 02:46:54 AM
I really liked MOO, but didn't like MOO2 at all.  There's something to be said for a simple, streamlined designed, and MOO is a great example of this.  I found MOO2 bloated, with a bunch of stuff thrown in just because the designers could; not because it was a good idea.  Admittedly, I didn't play it for very long, but I just kept running into things I didn't like and it just seemed like everything they added made the game worse.
6066  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rogue Galaxy - Gameplay video on: December 05, 2005, 04:29:32 AM
Given that the devloper's last 3 games have all been big commercial and critical successes, I'd say there's no way it won't make it to the US.
6067  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones on: December 04, 2005, 07:13:49 AM
The wall jumps were, for some reason, much less forgiving than the other moves, but there are only a few of them in SoT, IIRC.  The only game I've played where this move wasn't frustrating is Ratchet & Clank.
6068  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Liquid Metal Slimes - I love thee!! on: December 03, 2005, 08:45:59 PM
In DQ8, I believe babbles are called liquid slimes, and metal babbles are liquid metal slimes.
6069  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / New Xenosaga III footage on: December 03, 2005, 08:42:02 PM
They may do what they did for XS2, and offer a preorder bonus DVD with a story recap of XS2 for XS3.
6070  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Romancing SaGa - $19.99 at Gamestop on: December 03, 2005, 07:29:08 AM
I think I'm going to go for the preowned copy for $34.99 slywink
6071  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Liquid Metal Slimes - I love thee!! on: December 03, 2005, 02:38:53 AM
Metal Slimes have extremely high defense and a very high probablility of running away each turn.  Boosting your agility so you can act before it does helps, as do certain skills.  If you're lucky enough to get one, a critical hit from anyone will kill them in one hit.  There was a spell in the earlier games that would also kill them in one hit, but I don't know if there's an equivalent in DQ8.

Also, I've read that there are King Metal Slimes that give something like 30,000 exp. each
6072  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Drink Your Final Fantasy! on: December 03, 2005, 02:35:35 AM
I've been playing FF1 on the PSOne, and I've taken 99 potions into a dungeon, and still run out.  I had to return to Mt. Gulg 3-4 times before being able to make it through to the end.  And people think DQ8 is tough slywink
6073  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Not liking Serious Sam... on: December 02, 2005, 01:49:55 AM
It depends on the player.  Most FPS games bore me to tears, but I really like the SS games.
6074  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Drink Your Final Fantasy! on: December 02, 2005, 01:46:23 AM
You don't actually drink it.  You put your hand in the air, and then sparkles appear around you, and you magically feel better slywink
6075  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ape Escape 3 coming in January on: December 01, 2005, 10:37:49 AM
Gamespot has the news that Ape Escape 3 will be coming to the US January 17.  Ape Escape 2 was lots of fun, and it looks like AE3 will feature some interesting new mechanics.
6076  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Civ 4 demo on: December 01, 2005, 10:35:37 AM
I have an Athlon 2200, a Radeon 9550 video card, and 512 MB RAM, and it ran very smoothly on mine.
6077  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kingdom Hearts 2 - Official US website on: December 01, 2005, 12:26:28 AM
"I think I had somewhere near 34 hours logged"
I'm about 38 hours and in Halloween Town, with lots more to go.

Tetsuya Nomura, who I believe is the director of the KH series, did the character design for FFs 7, 8, X, and I think X-2.
6078  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kingdom Hearts 2 - Official US website on: November 30, 2005, 07:37:09 PM
SquareEnix has posted the official US website for Kingdom Hearts 2, along with a release date of Spring 2006 smile
6079  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DQ8 - questions (may contain slight spoilers) on: November 30, 2005, 12:35:35 AM
Yes, certain named enemies are only around at night, and there are other conditions for them appearing as well.  I just got to Alexandria, and there have been 5 that I've seen so far.  According to the FAQ, there are around 80 monsters to recruit.
6080  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mobile Suit - A New Saga on: November 29, 2005, 07:47:26 PM
Worthplaying has a preview for the upcoming Gundam RPG Mobile Suit.  I've only just heard of the Gundam series, but this game is looking good, with a nice turn-based battle system and customization options.
