2763  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Holographic Disc to Store One Terabyte of Data on: September 02, 2004, 07:44:27 PM
Quote
Japan-based Optware Corp. has announced today it had achieved successfully world's first recording and play back of digital movies on a Holographic Versatile Disc™ (HVD) with a reflective layer using Optware's revolutionary Collinear Holography.

Recording holographic page data on a rotating transparent disc has been reported before. Such discs, however, are foreign to the conventional optical discs. Lacking the servo information, they do not seem to have a commercial viability. On the contrary Optware has proposed Collinear Holographic recording on a hologram disc the structure of which follows conventional optical disc, i.e. preformatted disc with a reflective layer (disc with servo information).

On a side note, does anyone else think of the Metal Gear series when they see codec?
SNAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!

Nope, not at all.

On a related note, my dvd player plays Divx and Xvid.  I only had two items to try and both had shoddy source material.  I'll have to divx a dvd and see how she turns out to see if its the player or if its the material.

WinAVI works like a charm and is really easy.

My Xbox will soon play Dvix and Xvid, so then I'll be set and not have to go through the conversion each time.

Thanks guys.  I downloaded a codec pack and it took care of the problem.  The quality of the Xvid is oustanding.

2768  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Video File Problem [no sound] on: August 31, 2004, 07:51:13 PM
Hey all, I have the entire Firefly season 1 on my hard drive however I'm having trouble playing them.

Each episode is a separate file, and when I open one of the files with Windows Media Player, it searches for a codec with no luck. Eventually the file loads and the video quality is outstanding, but their is no sound. I'm not really new to all this, but I sure haven't been messing with Divx etc. in a while.

The files appear to be xVids, and I downloaded the Xvid codec and it still didn't work. The files are confirmed to be 100% working files though, with audio, so I know it's just something on my end.

Lastly, once I figure out how to fix the sound problem, how would I go about joining the episodes together, to burn a DVD with them?

I know how to convert from Divx to DVD etc., and am familiar with dvdrhelp.com and all the walkthroughs there. These files appear to be different though so I'm a bit lost.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Clipping penalties no longer deduct yards from your running back's total as they did when the game was released.

I rented Madden and again realized why I love ESPN so much.  No contest for me, ESPN all the way.

Well, it is quiet obvious that isn't me!  I wouldn't dare give the Democrats anything, much less Carbon Offset Credits...

Back in the day I played Quake a whole lot with a friend of mine.  He decided to create a clan called Logic, and his name became X-Logic.  I couldn't think of anything at first, but the next day when I checked the mail for my family, my dad had received some junk mail from EcoLogic, and I thought it sounded cool so decided that would be my name.  I just liked it because it can easily be shortened to Eco, which sounds cool as well.  I don't like the environmental connotations however.  I do believe in taking care of the environment etc., but not extreme like the name implies.

Great thread! smile  I didn't even know about http://www.ecologic.org
2774  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half-Life 2 Pre-Load is a Go... on: August 27, 2004, 01:26:10 PM
I finally got in last night as well.

I think it makes perfect sense to preload now.  Can you imagine how hard the servers would get slammed on launch if they didn't allow people to preload a majority of the game before.  Now  we all need only a small portion of the game to complete it, which will put much less stress on the servers.

I hope it comes out to us first though, as in the next few weeks slywink

Lockdown -

I played the tutorial this weekend and am completely impressed.  I felt a little lost as it's been a while since I've played any RTS.  I definitely like it though and will play through the tutorial a few more times before going online with it.  Unless of course you or some other CG'ers would like to join me in coop or something.  Let me know.

I suddenly have a whole slew of new games and less time to play them.

Warhammer, Rome:  Total War, Farcry (came with my mobo and it rox), Doom 3 (shallow tech demo if you ask me), Unreal Tournament 2004 (sequel to my all time favorite game, UT) and of course ESPN Football 2K5.

whiteboyslim, why is Brothers In Arms  a huge maybe?  It was the Game of the show for me at E3.  It's already incredible and it's made by Ubi Soft, who delivers a majority of the time.

Because off the top of my head I'm not sure whether it's the type where you control your squad from afar or while in the thick of combat. right now, F.E.A.R. is the big must have title next to HL2 so if I have to save money into next year for something, it will be F.E.A.R. over Brothers.

Well let me confirm for you that you control one of the Squad members in real time and can issue orders to the others.  You can zoom out and issue orders to allow for more strategic advancements on the enemy.  The AI is amazing.  The graphics are amazing.  The entire atmosphere made my jaw drop.  I played a little of it after the 15 minute presentation and was equally impressed.

Played a lot more last night and it's really great.

Nothing like throwing a grenade at a T hiding behind 3 barrels, and seeing the T and the barrels fly in all directions.  The physics rock more than the graphics.

Played a whole lot of CS:S last night.  What great fun.  The new graphics and physics add soo much to the game.  It basically plays exactly the same, but is made a lot more fun because of the physics.

An example of something that happened to me last night.

I was a T and was pinned down in the tunnel in Dust with only a Desert Eagle.  There was an M4 really near my position, horizontal to where I was but I was being shot at enough already and making a run for the gun would have been suicide.  In the meantime, one of my teammates had made his way up behind, he attempted to throw a grenade at the CT's who were keeping me pinned down, but made a really bad throw and it landed near me, but right on top of the M4 to be exact.  Boom, M4 flies right past me.  Sweet!  So, I grabbed it and ended up taking out 1 of the 3 CT's, my partner who assisted in my acquiring a better gun took out one and I was AWP'd by a CT up on the balcony.

Just a very simple example of how sweet the physics are.  I can't wait for HL2, full version of CS:S, and Day of Defeat Source.  What a beautifully well made engine.

Since the KB thing wasn't really hurting performance, I just selected, "Halt on all errors, except KB errors".  Worked like a charm.

I will do the device manager driver thing tonight and see how it works.  Windows didn't give me an option to install the default ATI drivers or not.

One more question, I have my SATA HD setup with RAID, even though it is one drive.  Is that bad?  If so, I will reformat and change it now that I have a better grasp at how to do it.  Let me know.  Thanks a lot.
