2601  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / DVD-R Drive Help on: October 21, 2004, 06:36:57 PM
So I tried it on my lunch break today and it didn't work.

First I made sure the cables were in and everything looked fine.

I uninstalled the drive from Device Manager and rebooted.  XP found new hardware, first saying "Found Pioneer DVR 108", then saying Found CD Drive.  I then launched Nero to see if it worked and it still gets hung up on the "Scanning SCSI/IDE Bus".  I then put CD 1 from Rome Total War in and it wouldn't load.  It spun like it was going to load though.

Do you think I need to reformat?

If so, if the IDE bus is corrupted or something, would I even be able to boot to the XP CD?

That's the last time I'll ever unhook my components to help out a friend...

Yes, as I said above.  My friend and I are having a blast with it.  If one of you dies though, you have to wait till you get to a checkpoint to return.  It's quiet intense smile

That would rock indeed.

I thought the episode was great.  I'm reall digging this show and can't wait till next weeks.

This and Smallville have a hold on me.

I also agree with the above posts.

The sound is oustanding.  Some of the best sound work I have heard in a game in a really long time.

My friend and I are having a great time playing through it coop.
2605  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / DVD-R Drive Help on: October 21, 2004, 02:50:13 PM
Quote from: "Jeff Jones"
XP is notorious for mislabeling CD/DVD drives in Explorer, and it usually doesn't matter.

After you make sure the IDE cables are 100% fully inserted ... here's the progression I would take:

1.) go into device manager and remove the device. Right click the Pioneer, and then click 'Uninstall', power off then back on, and let XP add it back automatically.

if that fails:

2) if nothing is on IDE2, put the DVDR on the IDE2 chain. Power up, and see what happens.

Btw ... look at the heads on the IDE cable you're using. Look where the pins are, and make sure there's not lint, or worse, a small metal shaving down in there touching the pins, that can screw things up. I've had that happen before and it drove me nuts trying to figure it out.

If all fails, try the DVD-R in another PC, just to make sure it's ok.

Thanks for the advice.  I'll check it out on my lunch break today at 1:00.  I sure hope it works smile
2606  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / DVD-R Drive Help on: October 21, 2004, 01:25:03 PM
FYI, I took the whole IDE cable out so it's possible it isn't hooked up correctly.

It's on IDE1, jumpered as cable select I believe.   It's the only drive on IDE1, my HD is SATA.  I normally hook another DVD Drive up to the same cable, but I've taken it out of the picture until I figure this out.
2607  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / DVD-R Drive Help on: October 21, 2004, 01:16:56 PM
I have a DVD-R that was been working flawlessly for me since I bought it a month ago.  Last night I unhooked it from the IDE cable, to temporarily hook up a friends hard drive.

I hooked it back up last night and it isn't working right.  It's getting power just fine, but windows xp sees it as a CD Drive now, where as before the only time it showed it as a CD drive is if a CD was in it.  An empty drive would be shown as a DVDRW, drive with a DVD in it DVD etc.

That isn't the problem though.  I tried to copy a DVD last night and Nero got hung up on the Scanning SCISI/IDE Bush.  I then tried to put a DVD in the drive to see if it would run. No luck.

I don't think the drive is messed up at all.  It appears to be a config setting of some type that is screwed.  When booting up the drive is recognized as a Pioneer DVDR108 ATA66.  That isn't normal is it?  That speed probably doesn't matter as much on a DVD drive as it does a HD, but I'm almost positive that is normally much higher (133 maybe).

Does it sound like it's hooked up incorrect?  Or I need to reinstall something?  Or am I just screwed all together?

Thanks in advance for any help smile

I don't think Halo 2 will have a hard time living up to the hype.  Honestly, it's more of the same, with sharper graphics, some new gameplay twists, better designed maps, and live play.  I'm sure MS has nothing to worry about... smile

Prediction:
Killer Instinct will be a launch title for Xbox 2 slywink

I hope I'm right.  That would make my year.

Ah, it works now!  Before I even restarted.

Maybe the server went down for a second.

I just use mouse gestures, a plugin that allows me to get a stock quote by right clicking on a Ticker symbol anywhere & one more that changes the tabs some how.  (not even sure really).

Can someone tell me why anyone would use the google toolbar plugin for Firefox?

My copy already has a google search bar on the top and a pop-up blocker built in.  Why would I want another google search bar?

I agree, this is despicable.

But to say that the GOP isn't doing this also is pretty naive. Implying that the Dems are the evil party while the GOP is squeaky clean is bizzare logic to say the least. I mean, look at what Tom Delay is getting nailed with now. Holy shit.

You have to accept the fact that most politicians are corrupt. And the current two party system is REALLY corrupt.

It's absolutely ridiculous to think that the GOP is playing this game straight also. Absolutely ridiculous.

I haven't implied anything regarding the GOP.

I would be more than willing to review evidence you have of the GOP practicing tactics similar to this, or anything else.
