YES!  I can play Halo 2 online afterall, with voice support!

I'm very happy and may not buy a new one after all.
2362  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 - It's ON! (impressions thread) on: November 10, 2004, 03:10:33 PM
My friend and I played coop last night and had a blast.  It's beyond what I even thought it would be.  It is everything I loved about Halo times 20.  The Squadmate AI is pretty darn good in my opinion and the AI of your enemies is a lot better as well.  I love the new vehicle jacking feature and that the enemy will do it as well.  My friend and I were driving through the tunnel to the bridge on the 2nd level in a warthog when we took some serious damage from a ghost.  We jumped out to fight, only to have 2 baddies get in the warthog and come after us.  Very sweet.   I can't wait to play more and get a new Xbox so I can play online... smile

Interesting thread...because I'm interested in getting an xbox soon, but am not sure if I want to go live or not...but where do you find xboxes for $99?  Also if that's used, how do you know the xbox isn't banned?

Is there also an advantage of having a larger drive?  Isn't the drive used for saving games and if so...how large are these game saves??

Thanks.

My friend works at a local gameshop that sells used systems and he can get me one with his discount.

The advantage of having a larger hard drive for me is that I have every single game from the NES, SNES, Genesis, all the systems before those in the form of emulators, + my favorite arcade fighter of all time Killer Instinct.  I put new movies on it all the time for my fiance and I to watch (plays Divx, mpg, avi, wmi, .vob, .bin, .iso, .etc).  I stream shoutcast radio streams from the Xbox to my sound system & now I put every single Xbox game I own on the hard drive which cuts down on load times, but more important I don't get any more dirty disc errors (launch Xbox with the Thomson drive).  I have a 160 gigs, and right now I have about 70 gigs free.

I always left the original (even though it was 4x3) stretched to 16x9 . . . looked ok to me.  So if I switch the BOX back to 4x3 mode . . . it will go top-bottom?  Great . . . I'll try that when I get home . . .  just not enough peripheral vision the way it defaulted . . . thanks!!!!!!!

Hey ras, I can confirm that it will work.  My friend and I had the same problem last night.  We're both used to playing top/bottom.  It took me a while to figure it out but we changed it off widescreen in the dashboard and it fixed it.

As for not wanting to play someone with a chip, thats just silly and I'll leave it at that.  I sure disrupted your league with my chip didn't I?  Actually, I guess I did now that I'm banned but that is beside the point.  Halo 2 being leaked was the last straw and the came down hard.  That is really all there is to it.

So you are telling me that no-one is trying to create a mod chip that will allow people use a turbo contoller undetected in ESPN NFL 2K5?  I know for a fact that there are. I also know that at the moment mod chips have to be switched off in order to play on Live.  But that doesn't mean this will always be so.  I would rather MS banned all modded Xboxes before someone comes up with a workaround.  Again I am in no way saying that you were cheating Eco. But one of the reasons I like playing multiplayer shooters on the Xbox is that you are sure that everyone has the same equipmet and is not using aimbots or fancy macros.  I have no problem with MS protecting this environment.

I understand.

I was reading at Gametab about this. Some are saying that even home-replaced DVD drives (replacing the shitty Thompson yourself) earns you a lifetime ban. Isn't that a bit extreme? Or can DVD drives be h4xx0R3d to allow burned games to work?

There is a way to get PC DVD drives (the Samsung 616 seems to be popular, this is a regular PC DVD drive that happens to be able to read retail discs AND a lot of recordable discs) to work with an Xbox, that's probably how they are going about banning in this case.  I'd say you're okay if you changed it with another Xbox DVD drive (Philips/Samsung in this case), but if not I'm screwed (I changed my Thomson for a Philips). slywink

To clarify though, using that disc drive will not allow your xbox to play backup copies of Xbox games.  It will allow it to read recordable discs, for audio etc.
2367  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Green Bean Casserole or Mashed Potato Soda! on: November 09, 2004, 09:29:57 PM

Quote
SEATTLE - Jones Soda Co. takes the idea of a liquid diet to a new low. How does Green Bean Casserole Soda strike you? And how about an aggressively buttery-smelling Mashed Potato Soda?

Even the creators of the fizzy concoctions at this small Seattle soda company can hardly stomach the stuff. But last year's unexpected success of the Turkey & Gravy Soda means another round of bizarre food-flavored soft drinks. As an added bonus _ they're calorie-free.

This week Jones Soda Co. launches a full meal deal of five Thanksgiving soda flavors, from the bile-colored Green Bean Casserole to the sweet _ but slightly sickly _ Fruitcake Soda. Last year's Turkey & Gravy is also back on the menu.

If you think it sounds less than appetizing, you're not alone.

"Oh, man, I can't drink that!" cries out company chief executive Peter van Stolk, after pouring himself a drink of mashed potatoes.

To banish the buttery aftertaste, he recommends a chaser of Cranberry Soda, the only one of the holiday bunch that doesn't make you want to pick up a toothbrush.

Drinking last year's savory Turkey & Gravy was no picnic, either, but that didn't stop people from clamoring for it, pushing bidding on auction site eBay Inc. up to $63 for a two-bottle set.

This year Jones plans to produce up to 15,000 five-packs of the 12-ounce bottles, which come complete with utensils (a straw and a toothpick). The sodas may not be as satisfying as a real holiday meal, but they can boast being both calorie- and carb-free, not to mention vegan and kosher.

Beginning Thursday, they'll be on sale at some Target Corp. stores throughout the country, and at other retailers, for between $14.95 and $16.95, with proceeds benefiting Toys for Tots.

Known for its quirky ads and offbeat bottle designs, Jones traces its roots to a soda distribution operation that began in 1987. But it wasn't until the mid-1990s that the company began its own line of sodas, cultivating a following among skaters, surfers and snowboarders with unusual flavors like blue bubble gum, green apple and watermelon. These days, Jones soda, juice and energy drinks are available nationwide at stores including Target, Albertson's and Safeway.

Five tasters were assigned to the task of perfecting the holiday flavors, although van Stolk said most other employees ended up trying the sodas sooner or later.

In the early stages, the staff grew deeply divided over mashed potato versus sweet potato: "It was like red versus blue," van Stolk said, referring to the recent presidential election.

In the end, he called it for mashed potato, arguing it was the more familiar food.

Jones isn't the only company to find that people have a certain fascination with foods that make you go "yuck." There's the real-life version of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, made famous by the Harry Potter books and featuring tastes like Vomit, Booger and Earthworm. And millions of Americans regularly tune in to reality shows to watch contestants eat things like spiders and snails.

Experts say part of the human fascination with such foods is the omnivore's natural tendency to try a varied diet. But there's also a certain group of people who are simply novelty seekers who get a thrill out of more extreme gastronomical adventures, said Virginia Utermohlen, an associate professor of nutritional sciences at Cornell University.

For those people, she said, the thinking is, "So long as I know it's not going to kill me, it might be just interesting."

Barbara Rolls, nutritional sciences professor at Penn State University, said research shows young people are more likely to try new foods, but she speculates it's not just nature.

"It's that bravado factor," she said.

And for some, Rolls added, the risk will have a reward.

"Who knows, maybe it really tastes good," she said.

I mean no offense to Eco.  But as a person who plays online via Xbox live on a daily basis,  I don't want to be playing anyone who has a modded xbox.  I know that right now there is no way to cheat on xbox live, but I immagine some schmuck is working on a way (or was).  It sucks that you are now out of the football league.  As far as modding the Xbox, I have one myself and I never even considered connecting to Live with it.  Microsoft is not saying you can't use a mod chip or a bigger hard drive.  You just can't play on Xbox Live with it.  Its really as simple as that.

That isn't really true though deoginizer.  They don't want you to use a mod chip or a bigger hard drive.  Period. Live is simply the only method they have of knowing one way or the other and the only feasible punishment for breaking their rule/law.

I thought that was the Microsoft's rationale for Live bans:  cheat prevention.

That is correct.  Cheating results in your account being banned, playing with a modded xbox results in that Xbox being banned.

Yea, it will work.  I wouldn't even have to change my account in fact.  It's just the actual Xbox that is banned, not my Live account.

Dimmona,

I'm using an Xecuter Pro 2, and the X3 Bios (not sure what version).
2374  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Banned From Xbox Live on: November 09, 2004, 06:56:48 PM
I don't even consider it sleazy.  In fact, I think the person who came up with the idea to ban modded Xbox's on the day before the biggest Xbox game ever is released should receive a promotion and a sizable bonus.  I know I would promote him if I were his boss.

The only thing I'm bummed about is missing the rest of the ESPN Football league as I was really enjoying it and visioned a comeback and triumph in the playoffs.  I won't be buying a new Xbox until early december, so I have to bow out of the league.  Very sorry to everyone in the league.

Chances are someone will find out a sure fire way to unban your xbox between now and then so I will also be keeping my eye on the scene smile

Anyway, at least my friend and I still get to play some Co-op Halo 2 tonight as planned, I can't wait! (hell from the Hard Drive now if we want!)

Seriously, if I'd modded my XBox and Microsoft pulled this shit on me, I'd never buy another XBox product again (I'd pirate anything I wanted to play).

That you're even considering buying another XBox makes me sick.

The only games I ever buy anymore are Xbox Live games and any other game I plan on actually playing more than a few times (ie. prince of persia etc.)  I have saved $100's of dollars already by not buying mediocre games.

It sucks that they did it, but it is their right, no?  I found a used Xbox for $99, and since Halo 2 came with 2 free months of Live I could be up and running for $99 (Halo 2 is already paid for).

You should stay away from nutrasweet, even after you have your baby.  My friend is a Research Doctor and she said that the chit is going to hit the fan soon when the newest research on nutrasweet is released.  She said it's worse than people originally thought.

Hopefully Splenda will continue to catch on and years from now it'll still be considered safe.

I have a mod chip, with an external switch.  I also have a bios that won't even allow you to attempt to log onto Xbox Live while the chip is turned on.  Today I tried to play ESPN NFL 2K5 against stiffler for the CG league and It says I've been banned for having a modified Xbox.

All I have to say is, DAMN.

MS and their billions have figured out how to go completely around the fact that the chip is turned off and apparently check the serial number on the hard drive and if it doesn't match the original HD you're banned automatically.

So, I've been banned on Halo 2 eve.  Tell me that wasn't a brilliant move by them.  They release the most anticipated game of all time (arguably), and bann 1,000's of people from accessing one of the games most appealing features, online play.  What are a large number of those people going to do?  Buy a new Xbox to use for Xbox Live, me included.  Holy shit, their brilliant.

This is my first full-time job  so I'm not completely up on job politics etc.  I do know that my boss and the compliance officer do not have any history at all.  in fact, he just took over as our new compliance guy in July and it's his first time doing the job so he's eager to please his boss.  My boss is already on probation for some type of compliance error so it could be ugly.

I really do appreciate all the insight.  You all have made me think about the whole situation differently.  I'm going to get my job hunting shoes and and see I can find another salary paying job for a fully licensed candidate with experience in the field.  I have no desire to sell right now as consistent income is the most important thing for me now that i'm going to be married soon.

Part of me wants the compliance thing to bite her in the ass now, which would pretty much prove me email correct.  I'm not going to try and change anything though.  I'll just save the emails I've sent over the last few months addressing the various issues so come the time for the annual review I will have evidence that I tried to do something.

I will definitely let you all know what happens.  Thanks again!

Well, we don't have a PR department.  Her pratice consists of her, the Senior Financial Advisor, me the Investment Analyst and Trader, a Financial Analyst (who does the plans), a Marketing Director/Business Manager (who showed the email), and an intern.

My bosse's "Boss", is basically the Compliance officer and the market group vice president.  My bosses annual review is coming up any day now and she has blank signed documents in client files which has led to many advisor throughout the country being fired.  If she's fired, we're all fired.

I have decided that I am going to call some other offices around town and see if anyone is in need of licensed help.  If I find some offices that are in need I probably wouldn't have a hard time getting a job with them since I already know the system and they wouldn't have any expenses since I'm already full licensed.

My fiance is pissed at my boss now too since she keeps on bringing up the wedding as if it's affecting my performance.  It hasn't at all and I know that for sure.

Anyway, I will keep you all updated on what goes down.  Thanks for all the insight.
