2361  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Job Interview Today: update [GOT THE JOB] - QUICK! New Dev. on: December 02, 2004, 04:30:53 PM

Good Luck Eco biggrin

You should also ask what kind of help they give for taking the test since it is so hard.

You bet I'll ask them that!  I wish they would just tell me to finish my MBA and that would be enough.  Very unlikely though...
2362  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Job Interview Today: update [GOT THE JOB] - QUICK! New Dev. on: December 02, 2004, 04:06:34 PM
Many of you know I've been having issues with my Boss.  Well today I have my first interview (tonight after work actually).  It's for a pretty sweet position with a whole lot better money.  I'm not really worried about this interview as I spoke with the President of the company on the phone yesterday and he pretty cool and laid back and he is the one who called me.  So, I'll just be myself and try not to do anything crazy and I'm sure I'll be fine.

There are some negatives to the job though.  On the description of the position it says that it requires travel of up to 2 weeks per month.  I brought this to his (the president) attention yesterday and told him straight up that I wouldn't be able to do that, getting married in April and all.  He told me it's actually more like 2 days, per week, every 3 weeks.  A friend of mine works there and he is going to have her look back at her schedule for this year and figure out how often she was gone.  If it's more like the 2 days per week thing I can handle that, especially since the money is so right.  Also, the traveling would be pretty cool, to cities like NYC, Chicago, Denver etc., so that is appealing in a sense.  I refuse to be away from my wife for 2 weeks though, consistently.

Now for the other negative.  The position requires that the person have an interest in acquiring the CFA Designation (Chartered Financial Analyst).  The CFA exam is split up into 3 levels, Level 1 has a 34% pass rate (lower than the pass rate for the CPA exam), and with level 2 and 3 the pass rate decreases even more.  A good friend of mine just sat for Level 1 and failed it.  He is bright, great at what he does (Equity Research) and had a similar GPA to me.  The CFA takes so freaking much time to study for.  I can't even imagine.

So, I'm still going to the interview despite these two negatives, thinking that maybe they'll be able to ensure me that I won't have to travel 2 weeks per month and that if I take the CFA and fail I won't be out of a job.

Likely?  Probably not.

If they offer me a lot more than I'm expecting, which is already 50% more than I currently make, I'm sure my fiance and I could make it work.

Wish me luck...

Sweet.  Thanks for the heads up.

No. Pirates of the Burning Sea will have a variety of professions available. You can be a naval captain, battling enemy navies and pirates. Or be a privateer, with official sanction from your sovereign to loot and pillage the merchant ships of the enemy. For that matter you can be a free trader, moving valuable cargo from port to port, or work your way up through one of the massive trading companies. And because our RPG system is not class-based, you can change your profession again and again over the life of your character.

I've played for about 2 hours or so and it isn't laggy at all for me.  The last server I played on before quitting my ping started off great, then it spiked to 200 or so, I needed to go to bed though so I didn't really care.

Great game.  I really like that outdoor map with the rocket launcher.   smile

Hi all, I have an Thinkpad that is in great shape that I no longer need.  I used it for school and graduated in 2003 and my new job provided me with a new laptop.  It currently has Windows XP Professional, Office XP and Adobe Photoshop, and Firefox (plug for the best browser out there)

IBM Thinkpad t22 laptop
Pentium 3 900mhz
512 mb
40gig (pretty sure on this, will confirm when I get home)
14.1 lcd
around 5 pounds
Battery is in good shape

I'll also throw in my wireless network card, I'll have to get the brand of it when I get off work tonight.  I can format it and reinstall XP if needed.

I'm asking $570 for it shipped, OBO.  Let me know if you're interested.  I can also post some pictures of it if asked.

Actually, I finally beat it last night.  I just went into one of those small cells, setup a turret on each side of the door and held the other one.  What a tough spot.  Now I'm on that AntiCitizen board.  It's awesome.  Very very cool board.

WoW for me I guess.  I'll probably get it tomorrow though.  I've finished Halo 2, am on the prison level of HL2 (GoTY so far), almost beaten Men of Valor and have decided I have no interest in the Vampire game.

WoW has me intrigued though, so I'll likely be playing it this winter smile

I agree wholeheartedly! I am an absolute giddy old fart while playing HL2. HL2 is everything I wanted Doom 3 to be. That is why I am so disappointed with Doom 3. While FPSs have evolved and taken many steps forward, Id has set idle with their game design decisions and concentrated on creating a super engine.

How about some stock tips?

You should have bought Sirius a month and a half ago.

So, we have this client who has an enormous position in Qualcomm.  I've recommended to him on countless occasions to at least sell half of it.  A Month and a half ago I tried one more time to convince him to sell some of it.  I told him just this one time sell $10K of it and put it into Sirius.  It was selling for $2.80 at the time.  Did he listen this time?  NOPE! frown  Yesterday the stock almost hit $7, and today it's retraced a bit to around $6.17.  Of course now I'll have a voice message when I get back on Friday telling me he is ready to buy it now, after the fact.  Such is life and I guess it's his loss.

Fantastic Game!!

It's hands down without a question the most fun basketball game I've played. My friend and I played 2 games last night and we've decided we'll put Football on the back burner for a while in favor of this (unheard of!). The first game was the Chattanooga Mocs (where I graduated from) against East Tennessee State University. He beat me by over 20 , which was probably good as I tend to beat him the most in football and he is likely to play more often if he knows he can win. The second game I was Kansas and he was UNC and I won by 3. It was one intense game.

I'm having a hard time alley ooping. Any tips?

Oh, and thanks for the recommendation

Also, the third person option disappears from the menu when you play split-screen co-op, so I'd say there's no way to play with that view in splitscreen. It makes sense if you really think about it. You would lose too much screen real estate to your character in splitscreen if you were to play in third person.

Yea, I see what you mean.  I personally like the 3rd person view for this game though.  I'm not a big fan of not being able to see the gun while in first person, a beef I've always had with GR.

We'll probably still play through it in coop though, it looks like a blast.

How's this for a cool weapon in a first person shooter?
"[It] makes excellent use of the physics engine. This tool allows you to hold and launch just about any imaginable object in the game. See a box, target it, use it as a shield, and then launch it...as a weapon."

Of course, this is a description of the Grabber, or Ionized Plasma Leviation gun, in the Doom 3 expansion, as revealed in this month's issue of CGW. When it comes to game design, I don't worship at the altar of innovation. Some of the best ideas are borrowed, and Half-Life 2's gravity gun is ultimately just an improved version of Anne's arm from Trespasser. But shouldn't you at least, I dunno, add a minor twist to make it seem like you didn't just rip something off from another prominent game?

What the CGW preview doesn't tell you is that the Doom 3 expansion actually reveals the Space Marine's name: Gordon Freidman!

2399  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / MMORPG Question on: November 23, 2004, 05:28:23 PM
First I'll list the ones I've tried in the order I tried them:

Dark Age of Camelot.  I played it pretty solid for the entire 30 day free trial then canceled my account.  I found that I didn't really have the time it takes to get deep into the game.  I disliked how long it would take me to walk from one section to another for a fed ex quest to only receive a small amount of reward.  My biggest beef was the amount of time I spent walking from one place to the other.

Star Wars Galaxies.  I didn't even play it for the entire 30 day free trial.  I luckily sold it for $30 so I didn't really lose much on it.  Something just wasn't right about it.  DAOC was much better, imho.  I didn't like the long walking sections in it either.

The idea of a mmorpg appeals to me though which I guess is why I seem to try a new one every so often.  Is there anything that is easier to sit down and play in hour spurts, where I'll actually be able to acomplish something during that hour?  And not just spend it walking from A to B?  Does WOW solve that problem?

Thanks in advance for any insight.
