2361  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need a Day Planner (franklin covey etc.) on: January 07, 2005, 01:38:06 PM
I just started a new job and I am responsible for a whole lot more than I was at my old one.  I used to just use my iPaq for planning and keeping up with things.  Now I feel I need something more, like a day planner.  I found one I like at Franklin Covey.

http://shopping.franklincovey.com/shopping/catalog/product.jsp?navAction=push&navCount=0&id=prod291

Do any of you have any experience with Franklin Covey?  Any other recommendations?  I would appreciate any insight.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Dying should have very bad consequences such as experience loss and chance of losing your body. It stops people from doing stupid things like wandering into places they shouldn't be. If the cost is high it makes the game that much more exciting. I will never forget my first journey across Norrath at level 10 in EQ1. It was scary as hell and it gave me a real sense of accomplishment when I was done.

The people bitching about the death penalties in EQ1 were usually the players who couldn't level to save their lives.

The first time  took the boat to Auberdein from Darnassus, and walked to ironforge, you better believe  it gave me a real sense of accomplishment as well.

2371  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Job Interview Today: update [GOT THE JOB] - QUICK! New Dev. on: December 20, 2004, 08:24:29 PM
Guy made my decision a lot easier today and withdrew the offer, after talking to my boss about it.  She pays him $3,500 in rent every month so maybe that had something to do with it.

Anyway, I was honestly leaning toward the other position when I came to work today so I'm very content with things now.  I look forward to starting on January 3!   smile

So I send pet to attack target, Serpent Sting before the pet gets their, let the pet gain aggro, then unload into the mob.  Works well for me.

I prefer concussive shot first - that way if the pet doesn't get aggo right away, the mob is slowed as it runs toward me, giving Felix (my kitty) a few more shots to distract it.

It also lets me throw in a Serpent sting and a few extra auto shots.

Yea, I did that at first too.  Then I read somewhere to do serpent sting first, so I started doing that.

I guess either way is good, but if I serpent sting first, and the pet doesn't gain aggro right away, I then concussive shot it.

I believe so.  Also, you get less XP if you let your pet make the first attack.

So I send pet to attack target, Serpent Sting before the pet gets their, let the pet gain aggro, then unload into the mob.  Works well for me.

You'll also notice that when a mob loses aggro and goes back to its original spot, it runs real fast and "evades" any attacks on it. It also will pick up no new aggro till its returned.

My Hunter is 17th and doing the same quest (Idols?)

Two things:

1) Did you happen to see the Shaman and Berserkers on top of the site?  These guys are nasty.  If you want a little humility, take these guys on.  If you aggro them all,  you will experience Insta-death.  I think they are 20th.  I did this by accident yesterday.... it wasn't pretty!

2) The little valley right outside the town up there where all the lower level troggs hang out... you know the one?  If you haven't yet, go in there and just let loose.  Set your pet on aggressive and just go nutz.  It is so much fun, it's unbelievable.  I went through that whole valley yesterday and hit the little camps one by one.  When I was done, I turned around, and there were dead bodies everywhere.  The speed at which the Hunter can go through that valley is absolutely sick!    Tried it later with my 16th level Priest, just to compare....  it was really sad.   The Hunter is just flat amazing in certain situations.  If for some reason you wanted to collect cloth, this little valley is the key to your success.  You can get 20 pieces of cloth in no time flat here.

LD

Yup, same quest!  The Shamans are nasty.  I took out a few though.  I think that is when my cat Sly was killed.  They hit the ground and he caught on fire and died a few moments later.

I don't know where the valley you're talking about is.  I know where all these low level "Rat Vermin" things hang out outside of the town and I went crazy on them the same way.  They all drop linen cloth and copper.  Not sure if you know or not but a 20 stack of Linen Cloth sells pretty well at the AH.  Where are these troggs you're talking about though?  They drop wool cloth if I'm not mistaken and it sells really well.  My objective right now is to make money.  All kinds of money.  It's fun and I'm able to level up while doing it most of the time.  I really like the AH, but I think they should allow you to input a "Max Bid" and handle it like eBay.  If they fix that in a patch & allow me to check it from work I'll be set.  My home base is Thelsamar only because it's so nice around there, and far less laggy than Ironforge.

I think they follow you for awhile then they lose their aggression toward you.  When that happens they run back to the place where you first encountered them.  Monsters don't tend to become aggressive again until they are back at their spawn point.
I've walked past some very high level monsters who were running back to their spawn point and they never even gave me a second glance.

As far as pet death, other than the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals jumping your case, there's no worries.  Mine sometimes dies several times a night.  I keep a stock of fishies and that makes him happy again.

Yea, I am never low on food thanks to being able to fish anywhere.  What level are you now warning?

Thanks for the info on the mobs.  Nice to know!  So those guys had no reason to be mad at me as they didn't get touched.

This game is so freaking great.  I can't believe how much fun I have with it.

If they would allow me to check the AH from work I would be set!
2380  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW Question - Hunter on: December 20, 2004, 04:10:05 PM
So last night I beat the Ironbald Excavation Site Quest as a level 16 hunter, and all the mobs were at least 18, most being 19 and one 20.  I had planned on grouping with a guild mate, but he was called away for family business so I decided to go at it alone.  I took my time and used my track humanoids to ensure I didn't get jumped by 2 Troggs at once.  I died 1 time while doing it and my poor pet died like 3 times.

Any time I accidentally trained 2 troggs at once I would run back to the campsite and go around this tent so they couldn't catch me.  Eventually they would give up and go back to the site.  The last time I did that there were other players at the campsite and they weren't too happy about me bringing the Troggs into the camp.  The thing is the Troggs didn't pay any attention to them and went back to the site.

Why did the Troggs just ignore them?  I'm glad they did, but it doesn't make much sense.  They normally aggro to anything that moves near them.

Also, are there any other negatives to letting the pet die, other than mana costs and the food it takes to feed it back to happiness after you revive it?

The offer was in fact accepted, verbally, but according to the Preisdent it wouldn't be official till I return the signed offer letter to him which I still have in my pocession.   So, while calling him and telling him I'm staying with my current company in another role wouldn't be one of my favorite things to do,  I don't think it's nearly as bad as it could be.

Based on what you wrote, I would personally take the latest offer.  The prospect of more money, great benefits, *and* hours hopefully limited to 8-5 would all be major factors for any job I would be interested in.  This is all assuming that you actually enjoy the work itself, which is the most important factor.

I love the work and the latest offer would is my current job times 10, so it would be challenging and allow me to actually learn new things and gain further cert's, even the CFA if I choose.

Everything I've read (and experienced) when it comes to counteroffers says not to take them.  There are reasons why you're leaving and they don't all have to do with money.

But if you think you can deal working with/by your old boss I guess you'll have to weigh the rest.

Understood.

This isn't actually a counter offer, it's an entirely different offer with another practice.  The fact that it is with the same company really isn't an issue in that each practice is it's own entity with it's own structure.  He doesn't even know what I currently make.  I will not be working with my old boss if I accept the position.  I wouldn't even consider it if that were the case.  He has 3 advisors under him, all which are not my boss (thankfully).  In fact, my boss will likely leave the office if this happens, something the new guy is aware of (he is the land lord).

I will pray about it this weekend and go over it with my fiance.  Hopefully I will make the right decision.

Spiff,

The only relationship between the new guy and my current boss is that he is the Branch Manager and she pays him a fee to mentor her.  I would have 0 interaction with her.

In all honesty, if my current boss offered me what the other two have offered, I still wouldn't want to stay.

I wouldn't say I'm actually worried about the travel with the new job since my fiance and I both agree it would be ok, but I would accept a good offer without the travel over the one with.
2394  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Job Interview Today: update [GOT THE JOB] - QUICK! New Dev. on: December 17, 2004, 04:27:40 PM
I can't really think of any downsides to be honest with you, other than having to call back the other company and tell them I won't be taking the offer after all.  I haven't worked directly with this guy, but I have dealth with him on many occasions.  Somethings I know about him.

He is the most respected Advisor in the South East.

He is also a Branch Manager and actually trained my boss along with 2 or 3 others in the office.

He is extremely knowledgeable of investments, moreso than myself.  This is good though, because I feel my knowledge is greater than my current boss.  I want to learn.

He told me he would have a contract for me on day one if I chose to accept the offer.   This is  nice because my current boss never gave me one.

The Bonus structure he outlined is outstanding & I think he may be willing to pay 100% of the insurance as well.  I told him that was one of the most appealing things on the new offer.

A lot to think about and something I didn't really think would happen.  You're right though, it is a good decision to have to make.  Thanks for the thoughts.
2395  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Job Interview Today: update [GOT THE JOB] - QUICK! New Dev. on: December 17, 2004, 03:26:14 PM
You all won’t believe what just happened.  The highest producer in the office requested a meeting with me.  This guy is in the top 4% of all Advisors in the country for my company.  He basically offered me a job, paying a little more than the new offer.  I wouldn’t have to travel at all and the bonus potential would be pretty substantial.  He generates 3 times the business of my current boss and I would be doing analysis for he and 2 other advisors.  It would be a lot more challenging than my current job, but I wouldn’t have to take the CFA right away either.  He makes 7 figures a year so he can afford to compensate extremely well.  I wouldn’t have to travel and my hours would be 8 – 5.  He will pay for other designations, CFP, CFA, or anything else I want.

Decisions Decisions Decisions.  Any insight?

How did you end up going to the Red Ridge mountains ?

My "home" is in Ironforge, so I recalled there, took the tram to Stormwind, then ran East from there.

I did the quests in Westfall before I went to Red Ridge, though.  If you're just finishing Loch Modan (or, like me, getting your butt handed to you by that massive group of critters in the mountains), I recommend Westfall.  You'll find lots of quests for levels 15-20.

You can get there from Stormwind - just take the road west instead of east.

Awesome insight man, that is exactly the type of thing I was looking for.  I'm not getting my butt handed to me at Loch Modan, I'm actually doing just fine.  The only creature that I have a hard time with is the Level 15 Boar, but now that I'm 14 I'm sure I can take it out as well.  That is why I was looking for another place to go.  I'll take the griffon to IF, the tram to Stormwind and go east from there as you said.  Thanks man!
