2321  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Can MS topple Sony in the next generation? on: November 16, 2004, 07:48:25 PM
According to Sponge.com, the Xbox 2 will be released before the Christmas next year and the launch list looks great.

Subtitles can be turned on of off. They are off by default.

The game (like CS:Source) supports widescreen displays as well.

Oh excellent! Subtitles-less games is the bane of my existence. I hated Half-Life for that sole reason.

I applaud Valve for putting subtitles in this one. I'm sold. It'll have to wait until next week however, I left my PC at home. smile

You have a hearing disability Raven?  Just curious.  I'm glad the subtitles are on it to, it seems like it should be a no-brainer.

I'm not following how you saved $100's of dollars, unless you mean you've been able to play "mediocre" games without compensating the authors for their work ?
.

I've been able to play mediocre games without compensating the authors for their work, that is correct.  If a game is good enough for me to play more than one time, I buy it knowing what I'm spending my $ on.  An example would be Kingdom Under Fire.  The absolute most cheesy voice acting I have heard in years and gameplay that I don't enjoy.  I had planned on picking it up on launch day but decided to try it out before launch to make sure I want to spend my $ on it.  Glad I tried it.   Tongue

Sounds like you might be on her bad side now and she won't be sad to see you go. (If I have my stories straight)

Yup, same boss.

I hope my situation works out as well as yours did Jag. smile

And ESPN football is awesome. Love your sig.

Thanks, the sig is 100% accurate smile

I didn't actually mean I was going to be sick due to all the gushing, I meant that I wish I could say I was sick so I could get off and play it myself instead of reading about you all playing it smile

Acquire Bioware.  They are easily the finest developers in North America today.
You can't do a hostile takeover of a privately held company.  I don't see any incentive for Bioware to submit to being purchased and made into a single platform developer when they can pretty much write their own ticket on any platform they want.  Just look how gleefully they bandy about the fact that Dragon Age doesn't have a publisher.  They know they are both consummate developers and consummate salespeople with an in-demand product.

MS is pretty good at creating incentives though.  smile

So I worked on something for an hour & a half on Friday for my boss and she just asked me for it.  I put it in her box Friday.  She said she took it home with her to work on (she didn't work on shit).  So now I have to do it again.

In other news, I have an interview on Friday doing the same thing I'm doing now but making $14K more a year with $10K+ bonus potential.  I really hope it works out.
2329  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Can MS topple Sony in the next generation? on: November 16, 2004, 03:52:51 PM
Purchasing Rare wasn't stupid.

They haven't done much yet I know.

Conker:  Live and Reloaded is going to light up Xbox Live though and I'm certain you'll see a new Killer Instinct game on the next Xbox.

Also, I have heard a rumor that they are working with Bungie on developing Halo 3 smile

I think MS will narrow the gap the next generation.

As for exclusives,  I think the Xbox has the better exclusives this time around so what do I know.  The only games on the ps2 that I would like are R&C & Jak.

I just found something interesting on the Halo 2 ending that people are complaining about (with good reason it seems).

If you finish the game on Legendary, the credits roll and say "Coming February 9th"... but no one seems to know what that refers to.

I just thought that maybe, just maybe, it could be some downloadable content with new levels for the campaign, with a "true ending".  It could be anything though, of course. I'm definitely curious.

I've heard it threw the grape vine that Rare and Bungie are working on Halo 3 together and that will be announced on Feb. 9th. smile

And I'm serious.

The highlight of the night was when I respawned helpless high on a structure after my wraith was shotdown. My wife flew up in her wraith, I jumped on top of the canopy, and then we continued the fight (her flying carefully) with me gunning on top as a ride-a-long grunt. Fun game.

I believe you're talking about The Banshee, not the wraith.  If you had a wraith in the air I you should have taken video of it slywink

I used my blockbuster gamepass to pick this up today. I'm pretty impressed so far. You were definitely right about the language. They hold nothing back.

Isn't it odd that MOH had no foul language, or even blood IIRC, and it was for the PC platform, which is supposedly geared towards adults. On the console, supposedly geared for the younger crowd, they go all out with the language and blood.

Anyway, I can see my delving deeper into this one, it seems pretty cool.

If anyone knows, how are the save checkpoints, is there a lot of having to play and replay the same areas over and over?

My friend and I had to replay the same area a few times.  It was rewarding though.  It was on the swift boat mission.  At the end of it you have to take the bridge and it's pretty tough.  There is a machine gunn on the bridge and a ton of enemy soldiers.  It took us 3 times to pass it, and when we finally passed it only one of us made it (me).  Luckily there is a check point after that part so we were able to move on.

I just don't see all the problems people are talking about.  Sure, during some cut scenes there is some clipping or pop-in, but not often.  The game is beautiful, imho.

Alice, I agree completely.  Men of Valor is awesome.  My friend and I were going through it coop up until Halo 2 came out.  Now we're going to beat that, but we'll go right back to finish Men of Valor.  The swift boat level is pretty darn fun to, hard, but fun.

Very good game that should be checked out by any fan of FPS's.

Normally I wouldn't touch a Dell product, but you gotta admit, this LCD looks sweet. I don't like the audio bar thingy either, but the good news is, it's removable. Notice the S-Video-in there... That means I can ditch my crappy TV. And it's only $800, and knowing Dell and their crazy coupons, I could probably get this for $600 or so.

I'm seriously considering buying this.

I must ask why you wouldn' ttouch a Dell product?

I'll continue to build my own computers, but I've found them to be pretty darn good for the money for family and friends.

I have found that I actually prefer the xLink Kai systemlink setup over the Live setup in Halo 2.

Of course it's the only option I have now that I've been banned, but I did play a good amount of Halo 2 on live at my friends house and the xLink setup seems just as good if not better.

I advise running in dmz, because you forfeit the little protection provided by the router.  Unless you also have software firewalls running on all the connecting client computers, this is a Very Bad Thing (tm).
.

You don't advise him to run in dmz correct?  Just want to clarify.  The hardware protection provided by a router is much better than a software solution.

wouldn't it point you in the direction of everyone who might have the file?

And then you grab different pieces of it, whether theirs is complete or not.

It directs the client to users who are sharing the file (seeding), and allows you to pull from each of them at once.  The torrent file isn't a small part of the file you're trying to download though.

I hope they are able to design the hard drive version in a way that prevents piracy, piracy hurts all gaming, even systems that are difficult to pirate, like the Gamecube, because some people choose the xbox over the Gamecube because it makes piracy incredibly easy.

Or because gamecube releases like 3, maybe 4 good games per year.

One of them will be like a PC, shock

By Wil Harris: Thursday 11 November 2004, 10:23

A SLIDE from a non disclosure agreement (NDA) presentation seen by the INQ points towards Microsoft launching three versions of the Xbox 2, one of which is a fully functioning PC.
The presentation, understood to have been given to analysts and market researchers in the UK earlier this year, plots a timeline for the introduction of the systems. Xbox Next and Xbox Next HD are planned for Autumn 2005, whereas the Xbox Next PC is pencilled in for Autumn 2006.

The standard Xbox Next will not include a hard drive, which will allow Microsoft to cut costs on this basic unit. Xbox Next HD, as you might imagine, does include a hard drive and will offer increased functionality based on this. Xbox Next PC is, according to the presentation, an entry-level PC that runs Windows and all standard PC software. It also includes CD Burner, Wireless keyboard, mouse and controller and will work best connected to a high-definition TV or PC monitor. Media Center functionality - like movies, music and photos - is also included. The device will also play most available PC games.

System outline specifications note that internet browsing and instant messaging would be key applications, and that the entire unit will be smaller than the current Xbox, although it will not be possible to upgrade the shipping memory or processor.

The year-long gap between the mooted introductions of the 2 standard Xboxes before the Xbox Next PC is an interesting decision, which suggests that Microsoft realises the time that the market needs to acclimatise to TV media functionality. Since the Vole expects to ship Xbox Next before the Sony PlayStation 3, 2 versions of the console allow it to get the first wave out before PS3, but to also spoil the launch of Sony's flagship by concurrently announcing the PC version. ยต
