2321  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Doom 3 's Gravity Gun... on: November 24, 2004, 02:17:52 PM

That's where HL2 seems to shine, not in the tech but in the game world they've created with that tech.

I agree wholeheartedly! I am an absolute giddy old fart while playing HL2. HL2 is everything I wanted Doom 3 to be. That is why I am so disappointed with Doom 3. While FPSs have evolved and taken many steps forward, Id has set idle with their game design decisions and concentrated on creating a super engine.

How's this for a cool weapon in a first person shooter?
"[It] makes excellent use of the physics engine. This tool allows you to hold and launch just about any imaginable object in the game. See a box, target it, use it as a shield, and then launch it...as a weapon."

Of course, this is a description of the Grabber, or Ionized Plasma Leviation gun, in the Doom 3 expansion, as revealed in this month's issue of CGW. When it comes to game design, I don't worship at the altar of innovation. Some of the best ideas are borrowed, and Half-Life 2's gravity gun is ultimately just an improved version of Anne's arm from Trespasser. But shouldn't you at least, I dunno, add a minor twist to make it seem like you didn't just rip something off from another prominent game?

What the CGW preview doesn't tell you is that the Doom 3 expansion actually reveals the Space Marine's name: Gordon Freidman!

LOL

Doom 3 sucks so bad.  The most overhyped piece of too dark garbage I've ever played.

Thanks for the info guys.

Humm, WOW or COH, that is the question...

I'll read more on each and make a decision.  I should probably get my mmorpg fix in now, before the wedding in April smile

So I passed the part today during my lunch break.  I'm still in the prison though and I'm not even to the turret section you all are talking about yet.

thanks for the tip smile
2327  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / MMORPG Question on: November 23, 2004, 05:28:23 PM
First I'll list the ones I've tried in the order I tried them:

Dark Age of Camelot.  I played it pretty solid for the entire 30 day free trial then canceled my account.  I found that I didn't really have the time it takes to get deep into the game.  I disliked how long it would take me to walk from one section to another for a fed ex quest to only receive a small amount of reward.  My biggest beef was the amount of time I spent walking from one place to the other.

Star Wars Galaxies.  I didn't even play it for the entire 30 day free trial.  I luckily sold it for $30 so I didn't really lose much on it.  Something just wasn't right about it.  DAOC was much better, imho.  I didn't like the long walking sections in it either.

The idea of a mmorpg appeals to me though which I guess is why I seem to try a new one every so often.  Is there anything that is easier to sit down and play in hour spurts, where I'll actually be able to acomplish something during that hour?  And not just spend it walking from A to B?  Does WOW solve that problem?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

The cracked version with a patch works fine.  My cheap friend tried it out to test his pc with the game.

I'm glad their cracking down too though.  This game is worth every bit of $50, if not more.
2329  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How is San Francisco in january on: November 23, 2004, 05:14:15 PM
Tebunker, I'm getting married in April and we had almost decided to go to Prince Edward Island, Canada, but after looking at things a bit more we've decided to go to Mendocino, CA.  We're flying into SF, renting a car and taking 128 to Mendocino (ranked in the top 5 of the best drives in the country), staying at a B&B in Mendocino for 3 days (right on the Pacific).  Whale Watching, Deep Sea Fishing, Horse Back Riding and other activities are pretty reasonable there.  Then we're driving back to SF, staying there one night to see the sights and coming home.

Just a thought, you may want to look at some other areas in CA as well smile

I loved the fan boat and the buggy level and the don't touch the sand level.  In all honesty, there hasn't been a level I don't like.  Ravenholm was exactly long enough.  If it had been much longer I wouldn't have liked it much as it was quiet scary to me to play at night by myself (guess I'm a wuss when it comes to scary games).

I'm now at the prison and it is definitely the most difficult level I've played so far.  Still great fun though!

I'm in the prison right now, but I don't think I'm to that section yet. I'm at the point where there is a turret straight in front of me which I can take out with a grenade, then to the left there are what seems like 3 turrets and a ton of enemy guys behind a force field. I'm out of grenades by the time I get there though so I'm having a hard time passing that part. Any tips?

The gravity gun is your best friend as far as grabbing and throwing those turrets...if you decide to go that route.
Otherwise, look along the same wall that the turret you took out with a grenade is on.  There is a vent you can go in.  You should be able to see the plug for the force field when you get to the other side of the field.  Just get rid of that and your bugs will be able to help you again.

Awesome and thanks.  I will try it on my lunch break today smile

I almost lost it during that level too.  Those fast ones actually give me the shivers...

As I said in another thread, my cat jumped onto my leg on another level about the same time a head crab jumped at me.  I actually shrieked...

What a great game!

give it a kick with the ol grav gun

And make sure you have the grav gun selected before you get into the buggy-then when you fall, you can get out and shoot asap hopefully before you loose any health from the ants.

Oh, btw, they can't swim.

And as an asside, I think so far this is my favorite level- the way you go for a bit then pull over for stuff to happen then move on is just great.

I liked it too.  The bridge was pretty intense.  I fell a few times and it actually took my stomach

Thanks for the feedback. Interesting. Yeah, that sounds expensive (especially since I'm saving for an HDTV Tongue) but I bet it's fun as hell if you get into the higher class cars, and have tracks to go to.

I'd definitely be more interested in dirt tracks, and gettin' my ride all muddy.

I wonder how durable are the $300 - $500 cars, and do the tracks generally cost money to use? $400 doesn't sound that bad, when you consider it's just a video card, heh. I wouldn't think twice about dropping 4 bills on a vid card.

2 Video Cards, (6600, all ya need)!

I just entered Ravenhold last night in HL2 and it is quiet intense.  In fact, it's the scariest game I've played (as I said earlier, I haven't played many).  It is a lot of fun though.  I love all the different traps you can use and the sounds are fantastic.  Can't wait to finish the level though smile

Anyways, I just finished Water Hazard and to be completely honest... I'm not enjoying myself very much at all. I can easily rank Far Cry over Half Life 2. In fact, I almost could rank Doom 3 over this. Still its only the first third of the game so hopefully it will dramaticaly improve.

Different strokes of course, but the games you mentioned shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Half Life 2.

I thought it was a mediocre episode, but still worth watching. I dont like the Kate-Sawyer angle. I thought kate and Jack had immediate chemistry, and sometimes if you are going with a love story, you dont need a triangle, just let it happen and take it from there. I am a big jack fan too, I have a feeling that his shame is nothing criminal, but probably either his failing as a doctor or a decision not to practice or something like that. The promos for next week leave me kind of bleh, too. The pregnant chick is not very compelling at all.

Why is she not compelling?

So last night I was playing HL2 and about pissed myself.  I'm not even to Ravenholm yet.  It was right before the air boat section, I was looking for some ammo and I moved a box only to have a headcrab or whatever their called jump at me.  The thing is my cat literally jumped up onto my leg at the same time (seriously, the same time).  I actually yelled.

So, I have Ravenholm to look forward to eh?  I've never really played many horror games, RE 1 being the only one I really ever played all the way through.  Since it's HL2 it won't matter how scary it is I'll finish it but playing scary games in an apartment by yourself is a bit crazy

Eco, you have no idea of what is still in store for you. I finished the air boat saga last night and if that was a game by itself I would have been happy. There were so many times when I'd round a corner at full speed and something would happen that I would literally shout "OH MY GOD!!" that I lost count. The car, the helicopter chases, the G-Man sightings, and on and on and on. I'm lovin' it. biggrin

Yea, I've already been amazed.

I really couldn't believe it when that huge brick tower collapsed right in front of me, or the car.  I had my speakers cranked up and was almost standing up playing it I was so on edge.   Do you know if the rocket launcher that is being shot at you will be available to use later in the game?  Just curious.  The rockets look so good I would love to be able to fire the weapon myself.  I want a multiplayer mode in this same setting so bad.

The game is number 2 on  my all-time list, creeping up on Unreal Tournament.  UT could very well be dethroned...

I love the puzzles in the game. To me they were all intuitive and they require some thought...however on a second playthrough they should be able to be solved quickly, thus none of them are busywork or a pain. Very good design.

I agree completely.

I was also stuck on that part with the metal grate floor, where jessie was stuck.

Now I'm at the very end of the air boat section and the only reason I quit is because I was blow up by a few rockets.

No I have to work and can't play till this evening.  This game has it's hooks completely in me.

I think HL 2 is an evolution for the genre.  I know I sure as hell haven't played anything like it before.  It's already in my top 3 favorite games of all time and I just got past the air boat section.  The game is a freaking masterpiece.  I've had so many memorable moments already, and jumped out of my seat a couple times as well, and I'm not even to the creepy part yet.

The graphics are better than anything else, the gameplay is better tha anything else, the environment is better than anything else, the game is on a whole new level and has raised the bar, again.

I can't wait for tonight's episode.  For one, I'm really interested in getting some backstory on Sayid.  And two, I'm dying to know if that women in the promo is the French Lady or if it's a flash back.

If Sayid ends up getting tortured tonight, just as he's wandered away on a guilt-induced walkabout due to his torturing of Sawyer, there's no doubt in my mind that the Island's powers are directly tuned in to the personal crises of the survivors.

BTW, I'm a die hard Philadelphia Eagles fan, and while making my daily visit to their website, I saw an interview with CB Lito Sheppard (who had a brilliant 101 yard INT return for a TD on Monday night).  In the interview, Lito talked about how much he's into Lost, and he had the following analysis:

Quote
The show I have been watching lately on Wednesday nights is 'Lost.' It's pretty interesting. It kind of has that purgatory theme, where it seems like everyone has been put there for a reason. The only thing about it is whether the people are alive or dead. When a plane crashes, there can be survivors, but that many? That's a lot of survivors.  Maybe it is a purgatory with all of the magical stuff going on. It's going to have some odd twist to it. The doctor is on the right path. Instead of waiting for people to come and get them, they're surviving and making their own civilization.

Do you want some spoilers? I know what the deal is with the lady in todays episode-or at least the basic details.
