2321  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Simple WoW Question on: December 10, 2004, 04:33:56 PM
So, I'm level 9 now and have a dumb question I'm sure.

I see people talking about distributing points but I haven't done that at all yet.  Am I seriously missing something?  Every time I hit another level I go to the Hunter trainer and train a new skill.  Except this time I didn't train the skill because I have heard it isn't really worth it (Parry).  If I don't train a skill this level do I gain a benefit at all?  Or should I just go ahead and do it?  Thanks in advance, and don't laugh too hard.

So, I started this thread early yesterday and ended up paying for it last night.  I haven't read any comments here yet because LOST wasn't on TV locally.  A Billy Grahm special was instead, with text scrolling along the bottom of the screen that read "You can view LOST in it's entirity from 1:05AM to 2:05AM".  No worries, I will never start a LOST thread again, it must be bad luck.  I did record it though and will watch it tonight. Good thing is I ended up playing WoW the whole night instead smile
2324  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW - The Hunter Class on: December 09, 2004, 02:38:00 PM
Hey, I'm level 8 now, when would I be able to use a gun instead of a bow?

I probably missed something somewhere smile

I agree with all your points Lockdown, and I don't even have a pet yet.  I just got concussion shot and it's awesome.  Now I can take down mobs around my level without swinging my dagger (finally/!).

One more thing, I'm not real clear on how I can train to use a sword.  The only melee options availabe to me are daggers.  I went to the weapons trainer and had no luck.

With Skinning/Leatherworking, it seems that the main benefit would be that as a hunter you can where what you make.  I've heard that people make a lot of money skinning too, is that the case?

I chose herbalism/alchemy as my profession.  Can't sell crap with it but I'm decked out in potions all the time and that's nice.  For making $$ you might go with skinning/leatherworking.

Agreed (as I am selling healing potions (10-30silver a stack), greater healing potions (60silver a stack), and Elixers of Defense (60-75sp for 2 potions) as fast as i can make them). I got 12 gold saved up right now and spend 2 gold on expert manuals for cooking and fishing and a 3+ gold on alchemy recipes. Not too shabby i would say.

Fishing is fun for me but others think its worse than watching grass grow or paint dry.  You'll find the fishing trainer in the main Night Elf city Teledrassil on a dock in the center part of town.

Toe, so you're being sarcastic right, you seem to be making a ton of bank from selling potions.

Great info guys.  On my lunch break today I made it to Donaleer (actually had 2 quests asking me to go there).  I completed those quests and accepted a new quest there.  I’ll try and pick a profession (great info here!) while I’m near Donaleer.  I died today for the first time.  I was on the outskirts of the city fighting some level 5 and level 6 demon looking things.  I’m still level 5 but I wasn’t have any trouble at all.  I then spotted a level 8 Nightsabre.  I thought what the heck I might as well try.  My first 3 bow shots missed completely, then it went down hill.  So Now I’m a ghost and I had to return to work.  What would be my best option?  Run to my corpse, or use one of the other methods.

I received a new bow from a quest in the starting town where I went into the cave to get a spider egg.  It seems decent and is a lot better than the one I started with.

Prepare to say goodbye to life as you know it.

And the Hunter is extremely fun to play.  I just hit Lvl 17 and feel like I'm just beginning the fun.

I really like the hunter so far.  I just got the Essense of the Monkey or whatever it's called.  I've trained all the skills in the starting area and just accepted a quest taking me out of that area.  Where do you hang out warning?  I'm going to join AH soon so I'm sure i'll be playing with many of you anyway, but I'm curious where you would recommend me to go as a low level hunter.

Also, I haven't picked a profession yet but I would like to do that as well.  What would you recommend?  I would like to make some money off it of course.  And I would like to fish but I don't know where the trainer is.

Can't wait to play more!

2336  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / First night of WoW. Awesome on: December 08, 2004, 02:40:38 PM
So this is what happened last night. I created my account, spent 20 minutes creating my Night Elf Hunter named Eco then joined the world. I had every intention joining Almost Heroes last night. I wanted to at least do one question before doing that though so I had an idea what to expect. I did the tutorial quest of kill x boars and x baby night sabres and 3 hours later I was a level 5 Hunter who had forgotten you're to send Rage a tell and lost track of time completely. So I went to sleep.

I had a great time last night though. At first I wasn't totally sure, but once I figured things out things really kicked into gear. I accepted a quest to go near the entrance of the cave north of the starting location (for night elves) and there were level 4 spiders everywhere. Luckily I found a level 5 warrior there who wanted to go into the cave and told me he would help me get to the quest person outside the cave if I would go into the cave with him. We decided to go into the cave first. It was infested with spiders. Pretty tough on my weak little level 2 butt, but we made it through. Later that night I had a quest to go in there myself and steal and egg. At that time I think I was around level 3 so it would be close. I thought what the heck, I'll try it before bed and if I die I die. When I went in there were 2 others going in so I didn't really get attacked much. As soon as I started to steal and egg though, the mammoth spider came after me. I fell down a hole and was cornered by 4 spiders and my health was as low as it had ever been. Some how I managed to run away from them all, regroup and go get my egg.

Anyway, I look forward to playing with you guys. I should get to work now!

There's a door there which has a beam keeping it from opening. Go into the room that's to the side so you can see the beam. Use the grav gun to move the beam out of the way and you can go on.

Took me a while to figure that part out as well.

Thanks a lot man!  I'll do it when I get home.

Jp.. I played every race and every class in the beta.  Took all characters to at least 10th lvl to get a feel for them.

My favorite char by far, based on it's sheer versatility, is the Shaman.  I got an orc shaman up to 31st in beta and now to 22nd in retail.  The shaman has excellent ranged nukes, a couple of DoT's, can heal (other chars and your own) and buff (tho buffs are thru the use of totems, which are cool in and of themselves).  Finally, he's more than an above average melee char.  Also, at 20th lvl, you get Ghost Wolf, which is like a shape change that gives you a 40% speed increase.  There's nothing cooler than a group of 4 or 5 shamans running in wolf form.  smile  When you're ready for a change from Fearme... try either an orc or tauren shaman and enjoy.   Rick

See, this is where I get overwelmed.  There are so many things I don't understand in mmorpgs, yet I'm picking up WoW on my lunchbreak today.

What does AGGRO mean?  I understand it has to do with drawing the attention of a mob to you, but what does it stand for.

What are buffs?  DoT's?

I'm planning on playing either a Shaman or a Rogue and I understand I'll need to use macros when playing a rogue.  Are they easy to setup?

What other words do I need to know?

The extent of my RPG experience is broken down below:

Secret of Mana (favorite)
Chrono Trigger
Shadow Run
Baulders Gate
Knights of the Old Repulic

SWG (belch)

Thanks in advance!

I'm now stuck on Anticitizen One.

I'm at the point where you enter this area with some stairs, some of which are blow away to make them unpassable.  There are a few combines above and below you.  The only way I've been able to move is to the bottom, there are some pipes you can jump out on which bring you to a ladder, which you can climb up and get a few supply crates, then you can climb back up the ladder, but not as far as you were when you first came into the room.  I don't know where to go.  The doors appear to be locked and the stairs are blow out where you need to go up.  Help!

Can you give an overview of what you do and what might be involved in starting in a job like you have?  Personally I'm getting a little burned out in IT, have no job prospects (even with three degrees) and wouldn't mind being in a job market that is actually growing and paying well.

Sure thing eric.

What I do currently is a lot different than what I would be doing if I get the job.  Currently I do investment research and trades for a Senior Financial Advisor.  I make 100% of the recommendations and trades for her clients (over 450).  I develop unique portfolios based on the clients risk tolerance and comprehensive financial plan (if they have one).  I run hypothetical illustrations for each portfolio I develop and create an illustration/presentation presenting the recommendations to the client.  On large cases, I may sit in with the advisor during the appointment to go over the portfolio myself.   I also take care of all the technical things for our team, a role I kinda got stuck in.

If I’m offered the new job I’ll be an AIMR & GIPS (Global Investment Performance Standards) Verifier.  Investment Management companies report the Returns of their products and until recently it didn’t really matter if the returns were verified by a 3rd party.  Well after all the investment scandals and issues the entire industry has changed and most Investment Management firms have already started seeking 3rd party verification.  It isn’t a requirement right now, however, by 2010 every Investment Management firm (approximately 1,500 in the nation) will have to be verified.  Once the relationship is developed and the contract is signed (annual), your job as a verifier is to ensure that the firm is compliant.  Investment Management firms must have their portfolios put into a composite.  For example, all of their Large Cap Value Portfolios lumped into one composite to generate a Large Cap Value performance number.  Initially you would interview the company and show them a sample of a compliant performance report for one composite.  They would review the sample and tell explain to you how close they are to being compliant.  Then you would tell them how to use their current system to develop a compliant performance report.  After they have implemented the new system, you would travel to their business and review what they have done and make sure their composites were developed correct (ensuring they didn’t cherry pick their best LC Value stocks for example).  You would review the trade tickets and stocks that they bought and interview the managers.  Then give your stamp of approval verifying that the performance numbers are 100% compliant.  The industry for verifiers is booming because their aren’t many companies that do it and the need is being realized more and more by the I Mgt companies and that will only increase between now and 2010.  The fees charged to verify are enormous.  I was blown away.

To get into the Financial Services industry, like I’m doing right now, you’ll just need to obtain a Series 7, Series 66 (or 63 depending on the firm) and a Life/Health Insurance license.  To obtain those you will have to be sponsored by a firm.  Anyone can become a financial advisor regardless of what their degree is in.  Finding a non-selling job like I’m doing now is a little different.  I would just ask around the planning firms in your city if they need any licensed help.

To become a verifier one needs a background in Finance or Accounting and needs to be willing to go for the CFA as I said above.  AIMR, the company that administers the CFA is developing a new exam specifically for verifiers that will likely become mandatory.  It will not be 3 levels like the CFA though and shouldn’t be as overwhelming.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the advice Spiff.

The interview went really well.  The President is going to look at the schedule of one of the other employees over the pas year and figure up how often they had to travel and give me a concrete example of the frequency to expect.  If after reviewing it, I'm comfortable with it, we will "proceed", if I'm not he thanked me for "giving it a thought".

So, I should receive that information from him this weekend and will probably make a decision by early next week.

Job sounds super sweet though, and the industry is booming (AIMR Compliance Verification).

I'll update you all next week.

The 'real' weapons also seem very underpowered, even against foes with zero armor.

All-in-all, not too impressed.

Definatley go for it if the travel is as light as your friend says.

As far as the CFA goes, do it. I have some friends that have the designation, and say the designation definately helps in the future.

That being said, a 34% pass rate is pretty reasonable. I earned my CPA, and it was a bitch. The 34% is higher than the first time pass rates for the CPA exam though. The actual numbers for first time candidates passing all 4 parts (Auditing, Business Law, Fin Acctg & Reporting & Regulation) of the examon their first try are right at 20% or so. The figures go up as candidates re-take the exam, but first timers fare very poorly in comparison to those sitting for the Bar exam or Medical boards. The main drawback is study time. I spent a boatload of time studying the areas I didn't take in college (Consolidations & Not for profit Hospitals and Universities), and alot more time reviewing what I did take. That, and being up-to-date on the current tax legislation at exam time can be a pain, but well worth it. Don't let the thought of more study hold you back. Do it!

Good luck!

Thanks Spiff.  I definitely won't let the CFA be a reason not to take the job if it's offered to me.

Would you say studying an 2 hours a day and 8 hours during the weekend (18 hours a week) would be reasonable?  I'm just trying to figure out when I would study and still have time with the wife.

I could then do an hour before work, an hour after work, and during the weekend it would obviously be a lot easier.

I studied like heck for the Series 7, which I know is a helluva lot easier.
