121  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: A Gaming Thread on the irrelevance of Unions on: June 10, 2014, 09:14:50 PM

Unions are, in my opinion, a necessity. But not this particular union. They've clearly showed that they're not deserving of their responsibility, and they deserve all the public backlash they'll get from this news story.

Okay, first sentence is a discussion for another day in a forum I'm not allowed to post in slywink.  I am glad you agree with everything else though.
122  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: A Gaming Thread on the irrelevance of Unions on: June 10, 2014, 09:13:15 PM
And I agree completely, this composer should have never joined the union to begin with.  That however, doesn't equal Unions being relevant.

http://www.joystiq.com/2014/06/10/music-union-threatens-journey-composer-with-50k-fine/?ncid=rss_truncated

This is a fascinating article about the musicians union and their suit against a composer that chose to work in the gaming industry.  I've no doubt whatsoever, and would happily admit unions have played an important role during their time.

Their time however is over, and this article is another example of this fact.   This is so asinine that I can't imagine anyone here being on the other side of it...  How can you?  Do we not want fantastic music in the games we play?

We had a proud moment here in Chattanooga, Tennessee last year, when the UAW was voted the FUCK out of the Volkswagen plant here.   That my friends is a proud moment.  Of course they're appealing and that and the case above will more than likely after millions in legal fees and ass rubbing go the way of the unions, which is an absolute crock if it happens.

Anyway, hope some of you find the article interesting, and I promise the powers that be...  this isn't political, nor religion.  smile   I own 5-10 gaming soundtracks and appreciate good scores for games as much as anyone.  This kinda bullcrap shouldn't be tolerated.

So is this in fact Demon Souls?  I can't watch any streams at work so I'm just curious.

And for those of us with 360's only last go-round, what do I need to know about Demon Souls?

If it is pull your hair out hard, like I understand Dark Souls is, I'll pass.

No it's a new IP from the Demon's Souls team.  Dark Souls was an evolution off of Demon's Souls, this sounds like the next evolution.

from Famitsu (via neogaf)

- Spring 2015 release window
- They started work on this right after finishing Artorias of the Abyss, targeting Sony's new hardware
- The world and story is completely new, and the setting takes full advantage of the PS4's capabilities
- They're targeting 30fps at 1080p
- The keywords for the game is "blood" and "beast"
- There will be melee and long range weapons (guns) this time
- Character customization is confirmed
- There will be no map display in the game
- He wants combat to not just focus on action but also the strategic element
- The combat in the game is designed to feel like a life or death struggle
- There will be online elements of some sort, and it will involve players "discovering" together

Thanks!  Sounds great, as long as it doesn't have the super big learning curve the others had.

(Tilt, thanks for the explanation, all I've ever heard about these games is their great, but only for die hard gamers that can take time to learn a crap load of stuff to progress at all)

I, like many of you, have a family with kids and only game on Friday and Saturday night really, so the idea of playing a game with a steep learning curve isn't very appealing.

I'm surprised that theirs no Activision Press Conference.  In fact the only game I can think of that they make is Call of Duty series, and Blizzard stuff.  Did they fall off the map in the last few years?  they used to have a huge presence.

If they were ever going to do one this would be the year they would.  IIRC, they will release more games this year than previous years by a long shot.  I bought their stock in early Jan., and hope it keeps rolling smile

The new Zelda game looks great.  I likely will never own another Nintendo console and hold to the opinion, they are actually making an enormous mistake.

If they wanted to print money (moreso than they do now), they would:

1) Release classics etc. on ios (such a no brainer that anyone at Nintendo that shot this idea down should be fired immediately)
2) Keep making portable systems
3) Scrap consoles and make games for both next gen systems (of course this won't happen)

The absolute only thing that has ever been good about Nintendo from 2000 on is their first party games.  They would sell shit-loads if they would just suck up their pride and do it.

Just my opinion, and for the record I owned the NES, SNES, Wii & original GBA.

This discussion may be better in another thread, but seeing the new Zelda brought it all out smile

Of course you aren't wrong.  You're actually 100% correct.

To argue that Watchdogs and Imfamous are not in the same genre is foolish.  I don't care one way or the other if Tilt feels it's in some other unnannounced genre.  It it is what it is, and this discussion is actually a bit silly.

The point is the PS4 has had 2 open world action games come out sense it's debut last year, and Imfamous is leagues better.  The answer to Tilit's "rhetorical" question is actually quiet simple.

I don't care if Tilt has another opinion  regarding this particular (read: non-issue), but if Tilt chooses to begin thoughtful discourse on questionable topics, I'm game.

If I were discussing the other issues pertaining to those of us that live in the USA, id likely be banned from this whole place, and ii don't want that!

First of all, they are the same genre.  Period.  Deus Ex and Doom are not as close (though Deus Ex is the same genre as I:SS and WD).  Being in first person and shooting at things doesn't do it.  Diablo and Baldur's Gate are closer, but Diablo adds an action element that separates it from a traditional RPG.

I'm honestly not sure why this is bugging you so much.

Because of stuff like the uppermost quote. These are your opinions, but you're presenting them as if they were fact.

For the record, I really don't care enough to argue about the genres of these two games.  I think of them as being very similar, and certainly the same genre. One has a main character with super human powers, while one has a main character with super human "hacking powers".  Not  too far of a stretch in my mind, and I would bet big money that Ubisoft considers second son a competitor (if they don't they should as it's the better game).

I bought Watchdogs because of all the multi-year hype, and my recent great experience with another open world adventure game... Infamous.  I didn't buy it expecting infamous, but to think that the two are in different genres is a far stretch.  Even the skill tree thing is phenomenally similar...(I know this has nothing to do with genre, so hold your tongue, which is quick and controversial, but welcome at this forum).  In other words, Tilt, you drive conversation here so keep it up.

Opinions are like, well, you know the quote. I just found yours to be interesting in this case and was curious to know where it came from (your opinion that is).  Again, not arguing so let's not get crazy in this thread, I just disagree.

On another note, I think Sucker Punch should create a new ip open world game.  Based on how much better infamous controls and their story telling/narrative abilities.   Maybe even with the ability to drives cars (which doesn't make Watchdogs a different genre in my opinion).  Anything would be better than the driving in Watchdogs.

If The Last of Us comes out this month, I'll likely be trading this in for that.  Maybe I'm just burnt out on the Ubisoft formula or something.

This game is nothing like Infamous though, so that's not really a good comparison when talking about quality. Watch Dogs is far more ambitious in what it's trying to do, while Infamous could focus on perfecting its core gameplay to a much larger degree.

I find the comparison valid.  Ambitious due to the hacking element?  Infamous is technically superior.

They are completely different genres!

What genres are they?!

Me too.  I've barely scratched the surface of Watchdogs and will drop it the second this comes out.  This is the type of game that pushed me to go with Sony this time, even if it is a remake.

I can't wait.

You all should keep these detailed impressions coming, they are doing more to sway me than the reviews I've read.

I loved Infamous and don't want to feel let down if I go this route next.  Sounds fun.

Question, is their a lot if explicit language or sex?  From what I've read it doesn't seem to have any of this, but want to make sure.

I agree with your last post though MSD.  I'm going to wait a bit, though Ron's review is pushing me a bit,  my plan has been to trade in infamous for this now that I've beaten it.  Not sure now though, and despite any previous studies, review embargoes like this are not a good sign (note, not necessarily a bad sign either).

I just started playing this on my iPad Air last week and am truly loving the game. Although, sometimes I feel like winning has more to do with how good your cards are and luck of the draw more than strategy. But that's probably a common newbie perspective.

Does your hero's level decrease over time? I got my priest to level 10, which didn't take that long. I haven't played in a couple days, should I expect him to have dipped a little?

Hero level never decreases. Only rank increases and decreases (but not below level 20 each season if you pass it) when you play ranked mode.

I agree with Wonderpug, this game is definitely not pay to win.

When it comes to spending your hard earned gold, I recommend playing in the Arena.  You're guaranteed a pack, get great experience with different classes and cards, and will likely get some dust or something else at least.

Additionally, I'm all for playing whatever class you enjoy the most, but thought you would like to know that the Priest is currently at the bottom when it comes to winning percentage in constructed ranked games.  Plenty have played Priest all the way to Legend, but since you're new I thought you would like to know you're playing the weakest class.

I'm seriously considering shorting the absolute hell out of MS stock, just saying.

Seems they've no idea wtf they're doing (speaking as much about the shit that is W8 as anything).

When my company, a conservative regional bank is talking about moving us all to Macs, you know MSFT is in trouble.

I'm not at all rooting against the xbone, so don't take it as that.  MSFT is up there with Comcast in my opinion though.

By that I mean both companies have no freaking clue what is going on in the real world.

I feel like I don't have hardly any, but I just checked and I have 4.  (been playing since circa Dec 2013)  It feels like less because I don't have the ones I want to have, and rarely use the ones I have, but I guess having 4 without spending a dime of actual money isn't too bad.

FWIW I've gotten through a mix of Arena winnings or straight deck purchases using gold.

I have:

King Krush
Bloodmage Thalnos
Captain Greenskin
Illidan Stormrage
Al Alkir
Lord Jaraxxus
Leroy Jenkins
Ragaros
Alexstraza
Ysera

I think Leroy and Rag are the best, and Bloodmage Thalnos is definitely the most versatile. His cheap mana cost make him a no-brainer for most decks.

The Black knight is the next one I will craft (at 1.400 dust already)
