1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox 360 - Analysts call sales "Disappointing" on: December 21, 2006, 03:24:24 AM

Quote from: whiteboyskim on December 19, 2006, 10:24:58 PM

Actually I think it's due in part to a lot of the public deciding that they will upgrade when they damn well feel like it, not when a company tells them it's time to upgrade. This "our product lasts for five years then you have to upgrade to something newer and more expensive" attitude amongst companies pisses me, and apparently quite a few others, off. I don't blame Microsoft in the least for this as they're just doing what companies do. But it's the attitude on the whole that ticks me off and I think people in general are growing tired of it as well.

I agree with this as well; it's probably just a glut of new consoles and consumers waiting to see which one will be worth the trouble.  Halo 3, on the other hand, will probably double the number of 360s sold.  Halo = Xbox.

I picked one up recently and wrote up some impressions of it.

I love the thing and really don't understand the strong bias against it.

I loved it.
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Xbox] Heroes of the Pacific on: January 17, 2006, 05:18:02 PM
J&R Electronic had this on special a few weeks ago and I picked it up.

It's much more 'simmy' than Crimson Skies, but a lot more enjoyable too.  Plenty to unlock in the way of planes and missions, and there seem to be about 7-8 upgrade points per mission, which gives each of the campaign items replayability.  The MIDI-like music is my largest complaint, but it's a minor one.

I haven't seen a lot of talk about it here or elsewhere, but if you are looking for a fun flight game, and can find a copy, I think it's a good pick-up.

I rented this after reading so much praise for it, and I admit it was cute but not really the eye-catcher that I had hoped for.  The ship battles were fun, though.

12  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Couple Xbox Games i just bought, check them out. on: August 08, 2005, 12:20:59 AM
I was always curious how New Legends would be.  When you start playing it, give us some impressions, General.

Rallisport is pretty cool -- and I like the graphics betterin the first than in the sequel.  Tony Hawk 2 is awesome.  Good finds.
13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are your top 3 console games of ALL-TIME? on: August 05, 2005, 04:06:20 PM
Project Gotham Racing.  The game was crazy hard at times, and tight with the kudos, so by the time I accured 167,000 Kudos (when my first XBox crashed) I felt like I had really accomplished something.  PGR2 is good, though too loose with the Kudos and the cars, and as a result loses that sense of skill versus random selection.  Plus, as good as the online game can be, people always find someway to cheese the rankings.

Morrowind.  I've started this game over a half-dozen times, though have never played it completion.  Every time I play, however, I have a completely new exprience.  The epic scope is amazing -- the locations, the lore, the goodies.  It's a fantastic game that plays like a book.

...more to come...
14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / fahrenheit - anyone tried the demo? on: August 03, 2005, 03:08:44 AM
I'm downloading the demo now!

I'd definitely enjoy this on the Xbox since it out deos my PC graphic card, but teh controls were innovative, and the ssuspense within the story was very well done.

16  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Kids. on: August 02, 2005, 01:04:01 PM
depward, birth is so completely random in terms of those born into stability and those born out of it that I don't think you can stereotype an entire group.  Your birth status has nothing to say about the type of individual you grow up to bet as much as what people do with you for the next ten years.  You can fault the foster system, but at the very least the best foster parents sign up for the challenge of helping someone out, not avoiding the problem because of misinformed prejudice.
17  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Kids. on: August 02, 2005, 12:15:40 AM
I think it's sad that many people see adoption only as an alternative to fertility problems -- as others have said there are tons of kids growing up in a foster system that aren't able to become the types of people they could be with some good love and a consistent environment.  I wish people who already had a child would consider adopting to help balance the world's load.    I honestly hope to pursue this course myself one day -- it's probably the largest challenge a couple could take on, but the rewards are really immeasurable in terms of how you live your best life, and how you can completely alter the reality of someone who by pure randomness was born into a bad scenario.

Nice thread!

19  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 7 weeks without playing anything... *Updated* on: July 31, 2005, 07:05:52 PM
In Blood Wake you can set the difficulty -- a couple of the cooler boats you have to unlock on "Captain" (Medium) level, but I've played the game through twice and totally dig it -- sort of mindless boat/guns stuff.  I bought it when the Xbox was released and have hung onto it since then -- it's a lot of fun for the genre.
20  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / 7 weeks without playing anything... *Updated* on: July 31, 2005, 11:35:33 AM
NFL Fever is a blast if you let it not be Madden or ESPN.  Read & Lead Passing was a prety cool addition.

Tao Feng is a great fighter.

Bloodwake is good arcade boat/shooting stuff.

I agree that cheap games, even if you only play them for a week or two, let you have some fun without worrying about price.

But personally, if you aren't into the gaming for however long, I'd keep reading the books. It's healthy to mix it up.

22  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Who is your favorite comic book artist?? on: July 31, 2005, 11:26:27 AM
That was a great storyline with Beta Ray Bill.  For a short time, much later, Simonson took over the Fantastic Four and I had really been looking forward to what he might do with them, but he moved on pretty quickly to some comic I couldn't stand.  The Avengers or something.
23  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Who is your favorite comic book artist?? on: July 31, 2005, 04:11:39 AM
I was a big fan of Walter Simonson when I was younger..

And Todd McFarlane, of course...

24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Outlaw Tennis on: July 31, 2005, 03:47:27 AM
Yeah, but $20 new isn't so bad. slywink

I've played a lot more of OT and, man, I think it's the hardest game in the Outlaw series.  My fingertips hurt.  But aside from that 'can't believe he pulled off that shot' frustration courtesy the AI, I kept going at it again and again trying to win the last tour match using Killer Miller.  The game play is great and the mini-games are a lot of fun, though I'm reluctant to use them because I'm afraid they'll act the same way as in Volleyball and up the difficulty if you max your character stats.

Anyway, it's a great tennis game -- challenging with fun characters and lots to unlock.

If you liked OV I'd say go with it -- the two are similar in a lot of ways.  I like the whole series, and while I was initially reluctant to pick this up, I'm glad I did.
25  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Co-Op Game recommendations on: July 30, 2005, 06:44:39 PM
What about Obscure?  Co-op survival horror sounds awesome to me, especially with a friend who doesn't play too many games.
26  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Outlaw Tennis on: July 30, 2005, 06:43:34 PM
I picked up the game earlier this morning and played one match and did one mini-game before coming into work.  I agree with pretty much everything you wrote -- it's hard at first and the animations take a while, though I didn't see an lagging the gameplay or the response time.  I totally lost the match 6-0 and didn't get in a lot of hits, though toward the end I felt like I at least knew what I was doing somewhat.

The graphics are very much like Outlaw Volleyball, which is great, and the controls are pretty much identical to OV, which is fantastic.  Lots of new characters.  I'm excited to give it a real go when I get home.

If you want to take a stab at online play, let me know.  I broke my Xbox Live headset, however, so I'd have to go without voice.

28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Xbox 360] Project Gotham Racing 3 on: July 28, 2005, 02:24:11 PM
So did you guys watch the PRG3 trailer?  It looks like they're redoing Tokyo (also from the first game).  I'm a little disappointed as well -- they've added crowds in the streets and a whole racing TV network overlay to the replays.  One of the things I enjoyed about the other two in the series is that it was more a fantasy of driving through open, empty city streets.  Now it looks like it may become just another games of racing circuits within a city.  That's a real let down.
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Outlaw Tennis on: July 28, 2005, 02:19:27 PM
I just got back into town from an interview and haven't been in a store to check -- I hope the graphics are more OV quality than OG, but I haven't seen any reviews.

I'm pretty excited to hear that the Hypnotix team will be working on Arena Football for EA.  That seems like the perfect next step since I think they milked golf as much as they could with the Outlaw thing.  And their sports engines are always excellent for gameplay.

31  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What should I play next? on: July 25, 2005, 04:56:33 PM
That's a good list.  The sequel to Full Spectrum is due out in the fall, and I think you'll enjoy the first (and its dowloadable content) engough to want to do it before the sequel.  It's a fantastic game.

33  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Good basketball game for Xbox? on: July 25, 2005, 12:21:11 PM
Quote from: "Lockdown"
For a "complete package" game, ESPN College Hoops 2k5 is the BEST basketball game I have ever played, bar none, and with nothing even remotely a close second.  It may not be what you're looking for, but I just thought I'd throw that out there.

Have fun with whatever you choose.

What he said!  College Hoops is fantastic.

35  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Fable vs Jade Empire vs other rpg's on: July 23, 2005, 01:48:43 PM
I have been playing Jade Empire the past two weeks and I think it's the perfect balance between story and action.  The combat system I really like, and there's that dragonfly minigame.  I've enjoy playing it much more than I enjoyed playing KOTOR.
36  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [xbox] Unreal Championship 2 - Free content downloads out on: July 22, 2005, 03:38:18 AM

37  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Best Live Game on: July 20, 2005, 12:08:59 PM
Favorite: PGR2 - though I think the downloadable cars should have been better classified for game balance.

Other great games: Unreal Championship 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Phantom Dust
38  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Favorite board game? on: July 09, 2005, 05:47:25 PM
I think my all-time favorite is Star Wars Episode I Monpoly -- it's put together very well, with quality pieces and a niuce board -- without sacrificing the original game.

Another other favorite is Pirates of the Spanish Main.  It's a game I wish I could get people together to play more often.

Acquire is the same way -- great fun, but hard to get a group to go in on.
39  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone else looking forward to Pirates! on: July 09, 2005, 01:24:39 PM
40  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What game would you choose? on: July 08, 2005, 09:07:17 PM
Elijah:  The price of the non-LE edition new is down to $29.99 at EB and Gamestop.  I got the used LE at Gamestop.  Hope that's helpful.

Mytocles:  I read some old posts where you had written about how much you enjoyed the game, and I think back then you mentioned that save bug, too. I'll definitely check it out before taking the plunge, but it does sound like a fun game -- even though I swore I wouldn't buy it after the disaster that was Sea Dogs.

jade Empire is a blast -- I'm enjoying it much more than I imagined I would based on KOTOR.  The story is excellent, and I love how I only have to talk to two or three people before more opps. for ass-kicking come along.  Thanks for the votes, guys!  It was a great help.
