Finished the campaign tonight - really enjoyed the game. Good story overall and I am happy with the way it ended.

Just hit Chapter 4, and I'm liking the writing.  There's a little bit too much of 'BLAH BLAH is back again? I thought we killed them?"   At this point, I'm almost expecting RAAM to appear.

86  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Warhammer 40k: Space Marine - 40k meets God of War on: September 07, 2011, 06:07:05 PM
I spent about two hours last night playing the Area Control MP mode online as a Tactical Marine. I discovered that I really liked it. A fair number of players were playing Devastators and assault marines (Sorry, I'm not a chaos kind of guy, so I'll be using the Space Marine terms here) and Tactical Marines seemed a little light on representation. It was very interesting playing the middle ground. I had to listen for the sound of Assaults launching and landing and being ready to move. I got creative and was even able to stun a couple when they went melee wild towards me. Ended up killing them with stun/melee/ranged combos. I also learned to do a little scouting and watch where friendly assault marines were dying. It told me a lot about where the Devastators were hunkering down at control points, slaying people. Most of the other Tactical Space Marines I saw were going sniper, and very few learned to change their snipe location after dying... made it very easy for me to continually come up behind them and melee them to death.

It was a fine middle ground, but after a couple of rounds I didn't feel outclassed there. Yes, there was the usual lag issues from playing on Xbox Live, but overall I felt challenged, not frustrated. There is a chance I'm just fortunate enough to be playing while everyone is a new player, but I'm very happy with the single and multiplayer so far.

I'm having mixed feelings about the demo.   The elevator sequence is frustrating on Normal, as I'm having problems getting my health back.  Also how does one detonate vengeance gun charges that hit the ground?

Ale

Yea, it was just entirely too complicated.  The one the replaced it with is really a simple but entertaining and challenging minigame.  It's enough to keep you on your toes.

What was the original hacking game?

Is a two camera approach out of the question on these vids?  While I enjoyed seeing the dev, it felt like I was seeing too little of the game/display. (I'm honestly curious, as I don't know how it was recorded)

Late to the party, I know, but I just read that Apple is asking for 30 percent of all sales generated from purchases made within apps.  Found this out when I realized the Store button was missing from my kindle app.  As mentioned, it has forced Amazon to drop the Store feature from their Kindle app and then ultimately to release a web version of their app with the Store back in place.  The web version sucks though as it doesn't support a lot of the features of the app AND it oftentimes crashes when trying to sync purchases (at least in my experience).

Nice way to treat the companies who primarily drive sales on your device, Apple.   Roll Eyes

the only feature missing is the store button.  It just means you have to browse out to the store manually to send stuff to your Kindle app on your Ipad.

I still don't understand why people don't call the cops when in an accident, especially one with a motorcycle.

frown  Your life would be much easier if you had.

Police don't want to be involved unless there is a need to.  Seriously.  I've been a passenger in two accidents, and the officers were call.  In both cases they were non-injury situations.  Officers took over an hour to show up, handed each of the drivers accident report pages and told them to 'Send them in to Austin so they'd have the accident numbers for the year.' and left.

911/Police only care if there has been a criminal situation or someone is injured and needs EMT/Ambulance (at least here in Dallas/Ft. Worth)

What I have learned is that no matter what, inform your insurance.  The other guy in one of those accidents did not, while we did, and he called my friend up *really quick* after we reported yelling 'What did you say? They #$%@#% dropped me from my insurance.'  We asked if he reported it.  He said 'No, there wasn't any damage to my car.  Didn't need to.'  Insurance companies don't like it if you don't call in an accident, claim or no.

If you have an iDevice, consider getting the AH toolkit.  If you do, you won't have to put out the large colored back encounter cards, or the mythos deck. That'll save some table space.  AH = one of my favorite games out there.  Doopri, weren't we going to try playing over the net sometime?

100  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Borderlands 2 announcement, journalism or leak? on: August 03, 2011, 10:43:38 PM
I should hope they aren't cranky.  Duke Nukem wasn't something they started from the beginning.  Gearbox's job was to finish what they were handed and get it out the door.  They did exactly that.  If it was a mediocre game (no, I didn't play it) then it was mediocre well before it came to Gearbox.  I'd more believe that GI/Gamestop is complaining to them that one of their people talked (or someone at 2k did), and I think that's a weak explanation.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/08/developer-calls-accurate-borderlands-2-report-shoddy-journalism.ars

Having written for GT previously, and seen how the overall setup works with developers, publishers, and journalists, I find this situation interesting.  I like the Gearbox guys, having met them in person at the Borderlands launch here in Fort Worth.  I can understand why they would want to control how the information gets released.  That said, news is news, and thats what these sites rely on.  Comments?

(Please note, I'm not trying to cause any problems for GT, Gearbox, 2k, etc.  I'm just interested in the debate about games journalism as a metered resource, controlled by the publishers vs getting properly investigative and calling the news as we see it.)

Yes, but at least Capcom provided more than just basic matchmaking.  Their server handled the tallying of combats for the overworld map.  EA's 'servers' only handle basic matchmaking as far as I know, on those games, something basic Xbox Live already does.  They're 'ending' support is simply a move to get people to purchase their more recent titles and has no added value.

What would EA's incentive to keep those servers online be?

That's just it, they're not keeping any servers online aside from their little 'Connect to EA' login.   They're disabling games that would continue to run just fine on XBL if their little login control wasn't there.  They are devaluing older titles, removing options for people to play the games down the road. It's simply a control thing in this situation.

I don't carry anything in my pockets if I can help it.  I sweat really easily and have destroyed several good smartphones because of it.  I actually have a MadCatz PSP bag that I carry:

HTC Evo 4g (and Charger)
Ipad Charger
Car Adapter for my chargers
LED Flashlight
headphones
ID/Debit Card/YMCA member card/Kroger Card

So yes, I get a lot of flak about carrying a 'purse' but if it keeps my portable electronics out of my pockets and working, then so be it.

Basically, the setting is a world where the zombie uprising happened, and humanity survived.  But so did the zombies, or more accurately what created them.  The cure for cancer and the cure for the common cold worked great and did exactly what they set out to do, then they met.  Anything over 60kg would reanimate after death under control of the virus and try to spread the active version, aka zombie time.  During the uprising bloggers and citizen journalists became the primary way news got around, since everyone else was either under the govt's thumb or dealing with the uprising. It became the way to report the news.  The story follows two young adults, Shaun and Georgia Mason, an Irwin and a newsie respectively, as they report on the post-Rising world.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUXWlXK985U is an official 'trailer' for the series, though it skims over some of the details of the base story.

The third book is due out this time next year.

(Irwin - blogs about going out and poking Zombies with a stick,  Newsie - blogs about news events, including zombie situations.)
