ya and supressing fire is pretty nice too (even if it does eat ammo like mad).  i think part of my problem is also that
Spoiler for Hiden:
i havent invested in upgraded weaponry - mine are still sporting their original LMGs
82  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: October 19, 2012, 03:48:35 PM
It sounds like two snipers might be OP and unbalance?

lol nope on classic the aliens have no problem wiping me out when im not careful...

and only slightly MORE of a problem wiping me when i am careful.  in the future i may stick with 2 assaults on intact ufo missions... i still have a love / hate relationship with my heavy, especially as the rockets become less effective
83  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: October 18, 2012, 10:24:49 PM
I'm just piling on to the earlier recommendations that fully ranked up snipers with Double Tap and Team Sight are killing machines.  After unlocking Double Tap, my sniper handles well over 50% of the aliens in every encounter.  His kill tally is off the charts compared to the rest of the team.  I've started training up another sniper, and have done a few missions using 2, which works better than having 2 heavies or 2 assaults.

i basically did this by accident last night - i was training up a few rooks (well squaddie / sgts), including a new(ish) sniper on a mission that i thought would be a biiiiiiit too difficult so i figured "better toss in my col sniper as insurance"

they cleaned so much house as a pair its going to be hard justifying going with only 1 sniper from now on.  i had been running 2 assault often, as the run n gun plus double pump shotgun blast was too much fun.

by the way, i absolutely LOVE this game - it might just be near perfect in every way.  it IS Xcom, not a dumbed down xcom, not a "reimagining" not a "modern retake" - i feel like im back in the glory days - seriously kudos firaxis, you did right by us which seems to fall by the wayside too often in a day and age of bottom lines, shareholders and "business side" meddling!  i hope it pays off!

85  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox 360 Dashboard update- New Beta; MS Points going away with new update? on: October 09, 2012, 10:32:11 PM
I assume that you will still be able to buy XBL "money" at places like Gamestop, or maybe I'm just hoping that you will still be able to do this. I've never used a credit card on XBL and don't want to start now

count me in as someone who would be VERY unhappy if points cards go away

and depending on the retail arrangement i cant possibly see ms eating the cost of allllllllll those points cards still out there (i assume retailers "buy" them upfront and dont just receive a % of the end sale?)

hey ike 360 demo landed today, give it a go...

i AM going XBOX, but because im an idiot and didnt select release day shipping (ordered a book as well, didnt even THINK to do it frown ) i wont get mine for another few days to fill you in

that said i found the xbox camera angle a biiiiiiit cumbersome (actually less camera angle, more the zoom in / out) but nothing that i wont quickly adapt to with the *ahem* extensive play time i plan on putting in slywink

Research is still in, as are scientists and engineers, but it's handled differently now. Scientists and engineers are a resource you can earn, not sure if you can also hire them as well.

ah that sounds neat - i hope its not a linear progression and varies by user - i can go on "quest mission x" to rescue a few more scientists, whereas other players might instead pass on advancing science in favor of another path - and turtle thanks for answering the question but being vague enough to not spoil stuff!  'preciate it!
89  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: October 09, 2012, 12:17:07 AM
It feels as though the developers were a bit ashamed of the size of their compact maps and tried to hide the issue with a narrow field of view.

this is the only thing ive heard that is a biiiit scary.  i know its a careful balancing act to get a map that is "tight" enough to avoid needless wandering - but some of my fav moments from xcom were nervously advancing a phalanx of soliders in each direction, fearfully wondering where the next shot might come from or from which direction id spot that lil' grey - i hope the devs didnt make the maps SO small that i pop out of spawn and am instantly aware of most of my surroundings after a turn or two

also i dont want to read too many reviews - but research, scientists, engineering and manufacturing are still in yes?  quotes calling the base boring - are those just comments on how it is BUILT or is there really nothing to do there?  i still want to spend a ton of time looking over my supply of stores to sell on the market for an infusion of cash while building up an R&D department which constructs enough odd tech that the MIT labs would be jealous!

Ah yes another swap level!

As my regular retrain - Circling Predator is OUT for the new Hectoring Strike because...

I will FINALLY get rid of Setup Strike and its CA granting ability for the level 17 (WOW!) Dragon Tail Strike

So OUT:  Circling Predator, Setup Strike
IN: Hectoring Strike, Dragon Tail Strike

wow thanks tilt that sounds... exactly like what i was hoping for!  in a game like this id rather have near full up and down vs 360 (i think someone else in the thread pointed out the potential for problems with the world geometry and camera angles were the camera 360 degree rotation - this way the devs can just make maps that dont have conflicts with LOS and off camera angles)

does the camera swing freely or is it locked in four set positions as a few were suggesting earlier?  just curious and put me in the camp that wouldnt mind set positions as long as the camera goes high enough to get in all the action and give a tactical view...

95  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Lord of the Rings Online: Riders of Rohan on: October 03, 2012, 03:53:52 PM
one was the now-near ubiquitous provision that strips the user from near all legal recourse in the case of damages or injury (i griped about this in the new xbox eula from about 6 months back but because the xbox is a more "controlled" environment it doesnt seem like there is as much risk here - but i still look at computers as the wild west when it comes to the ability of third parties to use systems to do great damage to an individual)

and the other was a provision whereby turbine would constantly monitor the pc of the user, in unspecified ways, during game sessions (and no not in the way of usual packet monitoring and game performance - their systems would actively snoop for mod software)

the fact that the uk version had a much more restricted version of my first complaint and wholly omitted the second provision was enough to really feel like a slap in the face.  the only good thing is that the first part is still in the courts in the US and hopefully turns out in favor of the consumer

the us is falling way behind in the area of digital rights and when major companies are becoming increasingly unable to protect our data, i refuse to keep submitting to things like this
... which is a major let down because ive been consumed by this game for months now (i even went out and read the silmarillion i was so absorded in the lore!)... my lil hobbit will miss middle earth frown
96  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Lord of the Rings Online: Riders of Rohan on: October 03, 2012, 02:37:47 AM
i was sooooooo bummed about this - i had been playing and LOVING this game over the last few months or so (my first MMO!) - just yesterday they altered the EULA with terms i found onerous - so im out frown

the real kick in the face was the distinct UK EULA that DID NOT include some of the more intrusive and obtrusive conditions - i WISH the us were more respectful of the consumer / user when it comes to digital rights frown

so long story short - im out - which is a bummer frown  have fun on the plains for me!

cancel in 3... 2... 1...

which i admit is kind of a bummer - some of the earlier stuff they posted, while UGLY actually seemed a bit cool and would have been 1000Xs more great knowing that i had a "real" xcom to play as well

the company has already publicly gone "back to the drawing board" at least once and probably twice, so im more inclined to think that while this might not be 100% true, there probably is something to them testing the waters on another revamp - which cant be good news.  it either means they arent close (no one market tests something when the something is near completion) or they wont be close (they WERE close, but now its time for ANOTHER revamp)

huh knowing the price of popping a 680 into a desktop i dont envy the prospect of purchasing a laptop with one!  but if it exists i imagine thats getting near your best bet as far as being able to future proof the thing within reason - again if youve started looking for them you probably know more than me at this point - but its good to know that options exist when it comes to a real card being in the laptop!

i hope a few current laptop gamers come out of the woodwork for you
100  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: A solid laptop for gaming, primarily. on: October 01, 2012, 11:23:00 PM
good luck and have fun in the cabin arclight (lucky!)

and i have no advice from USE of a laptop for gaming, but the limit in a laptop is often the onboard graphics card.  before someone using a beast of a laptop steps in, id suggest finding out what laptop packs the biggest bunch in the video card department - one that "fakes" a true chipset the best or even better has the onboard architecture of an actual pc card - i imagine this is hard without turning your laptop into a replacement for your wood burning fireplace slywink

beyond that its all secondary, as the processors in laptops are often just as good as their desktop big brothers (a core iv is a core iv is a core iv pretty much), and ram is ram is ram

*five years later* "we quit"

why do devs keep thinking that THIS TIME will be different?  or is it just too hard to turn down that initial paycheck, even when they know the clock is ticking?

I loved the first but this just isn't clicking for me and I can't understand why frown

$40 in Amazon credit though perhaps I would trade it for Arkham City GOTY edition (also 360)

Only bad thing about the game - I used my code for the Premier Club so if you want Mechromancer in a month or so you'll have to pay!

good for them

i wish more pubs / devs would figure out that 9 times out of 10 hackers are going to hack and pirates are going to pirate regardless of their drm and all stuff like this does is turn off people like me who WOULD have bought the game, but now take a pass on it
105  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: September 05, 2012, 04:35:11 AM
i was thinking of preordering only because i wasnt sure if the amazon price was a "teaser" to get preorders rather than just the price of the digital download

and thanks inverarity that was the smoking gun - which is kind of a bummer because thats a nice lil sale and the talk in the thread was sort of causing me to lean toward pc or double dip frown  youre SURE this is confirmed?
106  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: September 05, 2012, 12:23:24 AM
And Amazon's product listing is now including a "PC Download" option that's $44.99 vs. $59.96 for the boxed PC, and the two console versions.

i saw this on amazon and was wondering if someone can do some research for me (anyone with some "inside firaxis info" would be nice!)

i REALLY want to pull the trigger on that digital download, but because there are no official specs yet, amazon doesnt list the required specs.  i KNOW my computer will handle it, i just dont want to preorder if its going to require steam / be linked to a steam account (something that amazon lists in the... you guessed it... system requirements!) - any way to look into this and get me an answer lurking gurus and insiders???
107  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: September 03, 2012, 11:44:05 PM
I've decided to get both. 360 for my first play through, PC for when I travel and for the eventual Mods. I figure screw it, it's not like I'm going to have other turn-based squad games to spend my money on

way to think outside the box, and this is an option that 1) i had not considered and 2) cant find much fault in... could be time to double dip

and tilt thanks for clarifying - so sounds like itll be quite playable regardless - damnit i was hoping for a smoking gun here
108  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: [D&D 4th Ed.] Official GT Campaign 3: No Business Like Gnome Business on: September 03, 2012, 06:26:06 PM
Two questions

1) (easy one) Game this week?  I know it's our regular week, and we played a "bonus" session NOT a "replacement" session but I thought I'd ask just in case (I was assuming a yes on this one)

2)  Are we sticking around for the seige?  Loaded question I know but I'll toss it out there slywink
109  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: September 03, 2012, 06:23:10 PM
LOL jz ive been saying that for months!

who here is decided on what system for the game?  i think i mentioned it before but im torn.  i really want it for the pc as i think itll just feel and play better w/ mouse keyboard (plus i heard there are certain pc features, such as a somewhat iso camera view and hexes - that just wont be on console?  true / false?).  but for some reason live has spoiled me and im tempted to get this on xbox if only to feel "connected" to freinds while playing - i can see this being fun partying up to play (im talking about just popping off random questions, discussing tech tree research and general "BS" etc during play - NOT for multiplayer proper - while im sure ill give it a go that isnt my deciding factor in platform)
110  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PC/PS3] XCOM: Enemy Unknown on: September 02, 2012, 08:02:05 PM
i guess this game looks kiiiiiinda cool, but i cant help but wish someone like ea would come along and work to modernize and streamline this tired old genre into something a bit more interesting.  maybe a third person shooter or some such, almost like how boring syndicate returned to us just last year...  ninja

in other news... *drooooooool* ... how much longer now???

(as a disclaimer, oddly enough i waaasss even looking forward to the shooter - but i am SOOOOOOOOO glad were getting this one sooner rather than later!!!  please live up to my expectations)
111  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: [D&D 4th Ed.] Official GT Campaign 3: No Business Like Gnome Business on: September 01, 2012, 11:43:23 PM
LOL AA slywink

Also, fun session!  I missed our first go at a bonus session so it was nice to get in on this one.  I feel a bit guilty now, with my PCs cavalier attitude.  Even something as simple as Kadnod's intro for the night helped to humanize the actions of our party, and really set the mood for playing a group of Misties who have been uprooted, stripped of their home and tossed into a foreign environment YES because of the Prepotency, but we sure didn't help matters by showing up on their doorstep that day!
112  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Twitter Widgets and my IE "Back Button" on: August 29, 2012, 03:26:53 PM
recently on several websites ive noticed its a pain in the ass to hit "back" - as in i feel im clicking it a million times (okay maybe 2 or 3) without effect.  anyway i finally noticed that when im having a problem, when i hover over the back button a tooltip comes up that DOESNT say "back to X" (the previous page) it says something like "back to twitter widgets something something something something..."

question: is this a virus or something new being embedded into websites?  is there a way for me to disable this in internet explorer or am i just going to have to start avoiding certain websites?

keep in mind i do not have a twitter account, i dont use it and as far as i know this computer has never even BEEN to the twitter page proper and id really rather NOT have it "following me around" or being imbedded in my back button

so, whats up with this?

i dont have a vita (like you i found out last handheld generation that i just never played the things even during travel time) - but i thought sony had done this?  or is it only for games on the PSN?
114  Non-Gaming / Forum and Site Feedback / Re: Forum Consolidation? on: July 08, 2012, 05:47:58 PM
Hopefully for certain big games (like Skyrim) we can keep separate PC and console threads, though, since I doubt console players want to read tons of posts about performance, system specs and mods

this was my hope as well.  while some console + pc releases DO tend to be all gameplay talk there are certainly others where the tone and subject of the threads are vastly different.  so heres a request for the mods to fight the urge to merge individual threads about crossplatform games (unless, of course, the subject DOES tend to lean fully toward gameplay).  because i do think well see some games where the "game X PC" talk is different from "game X PS3/360" talk.
115  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360/PS3] Dragon's Dogma on: July 08, 2012, 03:46:33 PM
i actually LIKE pawns to ninja loot (started playing again last night after some time off) - you can unequip/remove stuff from pawns in the equipment screen or the inventory screen just like you can with your own pawn and character.  my pawns mule for me constantly so i can build up my dragons (dogma?) hoard of stuff!

the one exception is equipment that the pawns were wearing when you hire them - if you take this off, it just de-mystic-fi-ed-ly returns to the OWNERS chest - so if you want to give a pawn new stuff to actually WEAR make sure its better and what you want them to have, as after you take off what they are wearing you cant get it back (IF their OWNER gave it to them - NOT if you gave it to them and want it back).

I'm new again to PC gaming and also like the division, because PC games pose a set of questions that just don't make sense in a console/combined thread.  Things like DRM, mods, system specs and performance - the two forums made it easy for me to look over these issues.  Now if we stay diligent and keep PC threads apart from Console threads, I'll be more happy - but I can see why it'd be nice to keep PC / Console apart - it's a good filter.  That and you'll notice certain games that ARE multiplatform (as in console / PC - NOT PS3 / 360) tend to have a dominant thread in either Console OR PC - not both.
