Is it just me and my old thompson dvd drive - or does this game freeze and / or crash out an aweful lot - especially durin trips to the menu?  There are times when I dread hittin start for any reason because it feels like I have about 7 outta 10 chance of havin to turn off my xbox and start her up again to get a shot.  and it seems to do it at the same points - this game is tough!  due to above problem, ive had to replay some sections about 3 or 4 times frown  annoyin!!! and kills the immersion

2769  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Smallpox TV Movie Controversy on: December 22, 2004, 11:05:26 PM
The SCARIEST thing to me bout smallpox is that recently the idea was bandied (congress leg end / I think FDA? exec end) about allowin increased access to it to create vaccines and such for altered strains...

what is most hilarious however is that this disease is only alive in two petri dishes in two places, one in US one in Russia (Im pretty sure thats where the second is...?)

Hopefully they let (literally) dead things lie and dont proliferate such a nasty thing so we dont ever have to see a "real live" Smallpox documentary... especially souped up crazy versions of it

RPGs - Morrowind is great you get to roam and there are tons of quests - very much THE free form RPG

Baldur's Gates games are GREAT if youre an action RPG - console Diablo kinda deal

KOTOR - I love it, more linear than Morrowind but the character development and story are fun, decent weapon / skill set variety

Fable is super fun just dont read previews of what it was supposed to be

If youre into turn based the new Lord of the Rings Third Age game is very fun - reminds me of linear Final Fantasy Legends games from old game boy days

Demon Stone is great if youre into the action RPG games - you upgrade in between levels - use your gold to buy better weapons to do more damage, age elemental damage, charms to give you better defense etc.  "Levelling" is handled with short skill trees that unlock new combos - graphics are awesome

Sports - check out ESPN Football before it ends up as dodo - hands down best NFL game

Baseball I loved the MVP 2004 (I think that was the latest iteration) - pitcher batter is the best / most realistic hands down fieldin gives you some nice options and theres a bunch of cool franchise stuff - players wantin contracts, budgets, tradin deadline and free agent all done very well

And I hate to say it - cause I cant stand the game - but for some serious fun try Tiger Woods with a friend (or many if ya got Live).  Awesome game

Because at heart this guy is a thug (ex merc / hired gun of one of the most abusive monarchies in the Middle East - who made it to runnin the police department of one of the nations largest cities).  I too think its ridiculous the amount of coverage - but if this is some thug turned political sycophant who skimmed millions of dollars from my taxes durin his "consulting" stint in Iraq - then I damn well wanna know about it.  Especially when over a year later and 40% of our troops vehicles are unarmored.  Is that crib overlookin the remnants of the Towers money well spent in that light?  Or is it a kickback of the most egregious proportions (at the expense of american lives)?
2779  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Questions - Xbox Vampire? HL2 and MechAssault 2 on: December 16, 2004, 04:21:32 AM
Hi!  This got brought up a couple months back in an unrelated thread, and I figured Id ask round again to see if there were any developments.  I remember readin in OXM a while back about a Half Life RPG (ie - it was source, which Im assumin was an Xbox version of Vampire).  I got a cryptic answer and was wonderin if maybe things had cleared up?  I want this one!  Please dont make me wait for Xbox2.  Same with a straight up HL2 port (or somethin close).  Valve had sorta but not really confirmed it but obviously no comment from the big Bill.  Any word?  Rumors, anythin?  Xbox2, Xbox, not at all???

And finally (here's an easy one).  Mechassault 2 - before or after Xmas?  Should I ask Santa for this one or will I just drive him crazy lookin for a game thats not gonna be released for another few days?  Thanks for any info, rumors or rampant speculation!

Wow I guess my hatred of the combat bein more sluggish and less fun than the first was more of a personal tirade.  But ya I pretty much agree with the other stuff youre sayin - though again I also felt the platformin stuff was equally as fun as the first game but with less responsive controls.  Youre right though - def NOT an 8, let alone a 9.  (and yeah seriously - didnt you feel completely cheated by the laziness of the developers - "Hey, I got an idea - why dont we call replayin the same section 800 times "time travel" hehehe theyll buy it and we only have to make 65% of a game to call it 100% done!")

Hmm I live and die by my Xbox but youve probably gotten the correct gist of it from the posts thus far.  If youre goin to be the primary user, get the Xbox - if your daughters are gonna be the main beneficiaries get the PS2.  I hafta say though - unless your daughters are already "hardcore" there are enough cutesy lil platformers on Xbox, and they probably wont really care one way or the other.  You on the other hand...  Just ask yourself whos toy this is - yours or theirs - and because you didnt even mention gamecube Im gonna assume youre goin to be the prime user of this and just wanna make sure the kiddies will have somethin fun from it also.  Youre in luck that theyre not boys - then theyd be done for as Xbox is basically devoid of all the Yugioh Dragonball type stuff.  Spongebob is on Xbox fyi.  Use this as you see fit... good luck - and theres enough good material on both systems where you probably wont be disappointed regardless of which you get - provided you dont look at what an Xbox looks like on Hidef compared to PS2.

I kinda liked it personally (though I do hafta admit to bein a Bethesda fanboy - they were one of the first companies I recognized by name and not just ooh thats some cool game - Blizzard was prob next (hmm unless you count those TSR gold box things - that was sorta like a company name thing right? though not a particular studio).  But ya I can see where people would get ticked bout not bein able to skip it - you didnt find it the least bit fun to see your character change height and such?  And it wasnt like it was a ridiculously long process - how much quicker does it take you to just enter in stuff?  Im pretty slow and deliberate when it comes to character creation anyway, so that probably influences my opinion.  To me they had an option to skip the really annoyin thing (if you didnt want to do it that is - I made my second character this way) - and thats the question / answer get a class.  Dont make me cry by sayin its not workin - I want this game now - it was the one Rob pointed me to when I was lamentin that Xbox2 is comin out too soon and were goin to miss out on a lot of phenominal games - "with games like oblivion I dont think we have much to worry about was his general response" - then I saw my first screenshot and lost motor function.  So please dont make the game all eye candy and no substance - though Im not too worried.  Do tell me if I sound like a suck up I will stop smile  And bring back that crazy rose!

Ya youre def right about rental.  I actually rented it and even still Im not thrilled.  The combat system is butchered.  They hyped it so much as this "new customizable thing" and I loved the combat in the first game.  It was so fluid, so responsive - it was like a baby DOA of action games.  I could point my thumbstick whack a guy, point again hit someone else, point again and do a backflip to finish the guy on the ground.  WW is a chore - non responsive, random and the targettin is horrible.  I point at this guy, I hit that guy, I finally autotarget the one lil girl in red, only to land one blow and mysteriously switch to the drone, to promptly have my back jumped on.  In the first game I could flip, stab slash and rebound off the environment at will - here it feels like a combination of luck and randomness when I finally land what I want - real bad.  That and (KINDA SPOILER......) you hop back and forth in time - which is just a really really lame excuse for you to replay certain sections about 3 or 4 times - come on guys the levels in the first game were awesome!  Goin from vast throne chambers to enclosed courtyards to ice caverns - now we get the same area 3 times over but you stick some vines into it cause its "present"?  Weak.  The platform sections are still cool, with the neat jumps, wall runs and crazy swingin all over again - but again the controls seem much more sluggish which is NOT what you want from a game where timing and precision are key at parts.  I dont understand how they made a worse game outta this, but they did and in the worst way - with laziness and a DOWNGRADE in controls - how do you purposely go back and make something of lesser quality than what you already had and not notice it?  I probably would have enjoyed the game a lot more if it had the same fluid combat and exploration controls as the first, with a new "darker" story.  As it is though if you want to play this game, just put PoP back in your disk tray cause youll enjoy it a lot more the second time round than you will this the first.

Id be careful about the job and the car.  Im not going to lecture on parenting, but in your initial post you said she got her job a month ago and the car 3 weeks ago.  If she was doing significantly better on her progress reports - it seems resonable to assume that she began tanking right around the time she picked up the two other "responsibilities" (I use quotes because for a teen these things are luxuries - they let her have mobility and spending cash - two things you DON'T need to succeed in school on the HS level).  Im not sure how your school system works, but do the math - progress reports come out halfway through a semester, which generally runs about 2.5 months... puts it right around that time.
2793  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / I miss Hockey!!! on: December 10, 2004, 08:46:54 PM
At least there's finally been some real progress - this is def a big time offer from the players (though I dont believe the final answer) but it sure beats the window dressin BS they had been puttin out there.  In defense of the players I think they are sayin that the 24% less cuts will be the "new standard" - ie in six years (I think thats the duration of the proposed offer) they'll get pay cuts or increases in line with the "new" salaries.  So if a guy is makin 1 mil now, hell go down to 750,000 - after six years hes salary will be maybe renegotiated to 800,000 or 900,000 - NOT 1.5.  In defense of the  owners - they want some promise in contractual form that this will be so.  I wish the players had more love for the game and took salary caps.  Wheres the fun in playin and bein either the hog makin all the money on your suck team, or watchin 3 or 4 big market teams dominate in utterly non competitive leagues?  Not to bring in sports that I bet a bunch in here think are jokes - but baseball should take note of this too - I love my Sox dearly but they are members of the baseball bougeourise (man all my years of Marx and I still cant spell it w/o checker smile)  I know its different because of the relative size of the money involved - but why the hell cant all sports say NFL did it, why cant we?

Guapo hehehe I dont know I just always sorta dropped off the endin of it - habit of typin I guess - though when I write up papers and such I never do - go figure.

And all teams have to prepare for James.  Before a safety drops back in coverage they bite forward to move up on the possibility of a run - take that away and guess what?  2 extra guys that play pass 100% of the time.  Same with linebackers - otherwise you could blitz on every play and drop the others back, givin no respect to the run.

And if its all Manning - then the Colts are idiots for payin one of the top RBs in the league when they could give some guy league min out of college and I dunno - invest some of the 7 mil they pay Edggrin a year in (novel concept) defense.  Obviously they feel he brings somethin to the table - and I offer that that somethin is a legitimate run threat that some bum doesnt give you and that you absolutely must have if you have a QB who really doesnt perform well under pressure.  They ONLY team I saw with a Manning like QB get away with absolutely no run were the Oilers and Moon.

Do you realize 17 of Mannings TDs came in 4 games against some of the weakest teams in the league?  Theyre good at runnin up the score against the lil guys - but put them against even a .500 team (Jacksonville) and even then they're only 50/50.
2797  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Any advice? on: December 09, 2004, 06:10:22 PM
If youre in a reasonalby decent school system (ie NOT Cleveland smile) HS is pretty much a joke.  A small level of attention and commitment (and I mean very small, as in show up, take tests etc) are really all thats required - and because youre more or less legally obligated to show up its probably time to ask some long hard questions about your daughter.  Some people just arent clever, thats a fact - BUT in HS it takes quite an impressive degree of stupidity to fail out for that reason alone (again, IF youre in a more or less functional school system).  If you think your daughter is incapable of doing the work due to mental capacity, there's really not too much you can do - but Im going to go out on a limb here and say thats most likely not the case.  Its probably more a matter of effort.  That said - night school is usually of little help as well - as why would a kid who doesnt want to do the work from 8 til 2 do it after dinner?  Guidance is your best bet.  Find out exactly WHY shes failin (again Im sure youre NOT going to find that its because shes "dumb")  That and by all means take the car away.  Take the job away.  At 17 the most important responsibility a kid can have IS school - that makes all those menial jobs that people think build responsibility now less likely to become her future.  Plus - whats the benefit of assigning someone MORE responsibility when they obviously cant handle the primary one before them?  In the end, both suffer - obviously she needs more, not less time applied to schoolwork.  Get on her back, tell her gc your concerns and THEY'LL get on her back - stay after school, study with teachers, go over material - and DON'T make it optional.  All this of course is assuming there is a value to her actually graduating.  If its really not going to matter one way or the other then grab that GED and be prepared to reap the rewards, most likely for the rest of your life.  Education provides one of the greatest opportunities ever and it is of the utmost importance.  Does she have other aspirations?  Does she dislike high school but express an interest in vocational school?  All are options - but dont let her slight herself now because she is lazy and would rather cruise around and spend her $100 a week - it may seem like a sweet deal at 17 but if you have no plans beyond that then be ready to learn to make that $100 last sweetheart because a long hard life awaits.

And just so I dont diss the Colts (even though I am a not so closet Manning hater - there I got it out smile) here's what I think they do.  James gives them an incredible run threat.  A guy that awesome has to be respect - he doesnt need to carry the ball once in a game, his presence in the backfield is almost enough alone to keep a team honest regardin the run.  Not only CAN he bust one, he can also cut and grind out 5 or 6 like other backs wish they could.  And Peyton - yes Peyton is the alternative to beatin talented defensive teams.  If you give the guy time in the pocket, he is a laser.  He will pick apart your D and do it by puttin that ball into the smallest openins.  You cant deny that.  Theyre line for the most part gives him that time also.  The only reason I knock him is cause he used to remind me so much of Drew (but he is more talented of course), and trust me I routed so hard for Drew for so long.  But he had the same probs - when you have a QB like that youre gonna hafta blow a good amount of your wad on an awesome line and or some type of very good runnin back.  And hey, if ya (goin to be crass here... smile) blow it too early you might miss out on that ass shes wigglin in your face... I mean um, not have enough for a defense smile  Theyre doin a much better job at pickin up blitzes this year as well (who did they, did they even upgrade that line?).  The only flaw I see with Manning is the fact that it becomes MUCH harder for him to do his thing under pressure - and when you have a guy tossin into coverage it could bite you (in other years it has - this year not so much - again I ask did they significantly upgrade that line?).  Oh and like I said, Im a hater so one more knock - name me the teams he had 5 TD games...  smile

RunninMn - good comments overall.  Nice to have a lil back and forth.  You think eventually Steelers will try to take Ben down the longer ball route?  Im just curious (cause Im sure we could go over Pats Colts stuff til both teams have moved to LA and Canada smile )  To me, the Steelers are another team that really dont NEED to change things up too much.  Yes Roesthlisberger erger slith whatever smile is incredibly physically gifted (but raw talent alone is worth nothin just ask Peyton's brother - sorry that was a low blow ya cant blame him I think Giants suck from coachin on down - did anyone see when that fuckin prick almost didn't throw the flag on an "interception" because he felt is was so blatantly the wrong call - meanwhile other teams offense was about 1/2 second from snappin and makin it a moot point - yeah, THAT'S how to win) but why would they alter a system that appears to be workin and workin incredibly well?  I think a lot more teams in the NFL are gonna move toward that "simplified" playbook because frankly it puts WR up against linebackers either dropped back in zone, or has cornerbacks tryin to make a real quick adjustment from a backpedal.  I think days of the longer ball are numbered as a staple (d backs are VERY talented at what they do).  I think the teams that realize this are the ones doin well (Falcons included whove modified the premise by essentially turnin any 10+ yard route into a run option).  With talent and coachin on the rise, the name of the game is gonna be variety and I think the teams that have a run AND pass that = run will be entirely more dangerous.  Adaptablility is key - you use THAT to open up the traditional passin game.  I cant see the Steelers fixin what aint broke to go to a heavy passin game.  What we WILL see, as confidence builds in the kid (and I do admit he is still VERY much untested - he rarely throws - but when he does hes very close to automatic) is that long pass bein utilized.  But thats always what passin has been - you bring the d up to sting em with the longer routes.  NFL teams that are doin well have been re-realizin this, teams that are doin extremely well are those that find new innovative ways to BRING UP that d - and that includes the Pats / Steelers short gain pass usage (though of course the Steelers still rely MUCH more heavily on a dominating run - why use the short pass when ya can trample and slice your way through the line of scrimmage? smile  But the option to use that short pass is devastatin - keeps ds utterly confused.  You cannot play that game without a QB who isnt incredibly quick goin through his availible receivers and has that sense of when to release - these things are (thankfully smile priceless.
