Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Guild Wars Startup Tips?

I don't know if links to other sites are permitted here, but if they are, a good site with lots of info is gwonline.net
I really enjoy this game, have been playing for a couple of months now, mostly the rpg campaign, commonly referred to as pve, which is great. There is also a huge pvp component of the game, but its possible to play pve or pvp, or both.
I would just jump in and start playing, but if you want a little guidance I've tried to describe a little bit about creating your character below, although I don't know if I've made it very clear or not. It isn't as complicated as I've made it sound.
The manual is pretty good, the first thing you'll do if you play the rpg part of the game is create your character. You will have a primary profession and eventually a secondary profession. Each profession has several categories of attributes that you will be able to customize, but one of these attributes is only customizable if you have chosen that profession as your primary. For instance one profession is a warrior, and the special attribute of a warrior is strength. That means if you are a warrior primary you will be able to increase your strength, if you choose warrior as your secondary profession, you won't be able to add points in the strength attribute. Each profession has one attribute like this.
But the manual is not as clear about the other things determined by your primary profession, mostly that you can only wear armor designed for your primary profession. And eventually you can customize your armor with runes that incease your attributes, but you can only use runes for your primary profession, not your secondary.
What this means is, if your character is a warrior/monk, you can only wear warrior armor and use warrior runes, not monk armor or runes. This means that ultimately your warrior attributes and armor can be a bit better than another character that is a monk/warrior. A monk/warrior can only use monk armor and runes.
The initial part of the game takes place in a beautiful world where you will have the opportnity to learn some skills and try out various secondary professions. This initial part of the game is a wonderful experience on it's own and is pretty extensive, but there is a great deal more to the game once you are ready to move to the next stage.

I don't know why everyone is so keen on the bonus mission. Other than the "fun factor" aspect, xp and skill points come naturally as you progress. You also hit level 20 automatically about 70% through the game whether you have enough xp or not. Sometimes I hear, "I want to be strong enough for the missions so that's why I level grind and/or do the bonus". i just like to do all the missions, including bonuses, for the sake of experiencing all that the game has to offer. that's the same reason that i'm level 18 now and haven't yet reached the ascension trials (i'm at The Wilds)...i've done everything i can find along the way in order to learn new skills, have some extra fun with other players, and have the satisfaction of knowing i've completed everything possible along the way. while playing my first PvE character, my goal is not to hit level 20 as soon as possible, it's to gain levels as they come and have a good time along the way. Thats the way I play too, I'm not in a hurry to get to the end. And Guild Wars has one of the largest worlds with more stuff to do in those worlds, than any game I can think of. But it is neat that people who want to rush through, I guess to play pvp, can also play that way.

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Guild Wars Solo Play?

I like to do most or all side quests in a game, so maybe my character is higher level by the time I do the missions, but I don't have all that much trouble doing them with just henchmen.
I haven't finished the game though, so maybe that changes. But I also haven't had much trouble teaming up with groups, most of the time the people I've grouped with have played well, although there are occasional people who try to go too fast or even worse just drop out of the game.
But overall the game is so good, that minor problems like that don't bother me.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / A watershed moment for PC Gamers

One thing about living a long time, you get to see things come and go.
pc gaming will die when people stop using computers. When will that happen ?
Never.
Console gaming will die when people get sick of it. When will that happen ?
Well, it's happened several times in the past, and will happen again, a good time might be when Sony and MS come out with $500 consoles and $75 games.

Your error ?
Don't buy into the apologist's mentality. It's ridiculous you can't change your account name.
It's also stupid you have to pony up a new $10 just to play a game you thought you bought 5 years ago..

"Legolas alone can hold whole army, i have done it numerous time, add Gimly or Aragorn to him and they become unstopable."
well, in a way this is kind of true to the books and the movies, isn't it ?

Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / EBGames.com bad experience

"Now, they are telling me I must return the game, either by mail or by going to an EBGames store to get a refund or replacement Has anyone else had any bad experiences with EBgames.com?"
What do you expect them to do ? They should pay for the return shipping, though.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP Launch Details March 24, $249

The $149 rumors sounded a lot better..but apparently that was just floated out there to kill DS sales, kind of like Sony did to the Dreamcast.
the "added value pack" I guess is supposed to make it appear the PSP is only $150 by itself, but if you can't buy it by itself then that's pretty deceptive marketing.

Yea, well trying a game out can be done legally by renting a game. You wouldn't save hundreds of dollars unless you decided to go ahead and use/keep a game as if you had bought it, beyond just trying it out. .

"The only games I ever buy anymore are Xbox Live games and any other game I plan on actually playing more than a few times (ie. prince of persia etc.) I have saved $100's of dollars already by not buying mediocre games."
I'm not following how you saved $100's of dollars, unless you mean you've been able to play "mediocre" games without compensating the authors for their work ? .

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Microsoft to release three versions of Xbox 2
|
on: November 11, 2004, 06:07:37 PM

I hope they are able to design the hard drive version in a way that prevents piracy, piracy hurts all gaming, even systems that are difficult to pirate, like the Gamecube, because some people choose the xbox over the Gamecube because it makes piracy incredibly easy. Or because gamecube releases like 3, maybe 4 good games per year. That isn't true, but what does it have to do with what I said ? . .

So I bought Pikmin 2, Paper Mario, and GTA3:San Andreas.. but since I don't have a PS2 I had hoped to maybe exchange it for Metroid 2 in a couple of weeks.
But if I can't do that, but can return it for $33, that still makes this a good deal for Paper Mario and Pikmin 2.

It's not the terrific show it was when Leo was there, but it's still better than most things on tv.
Sarah is the best part of the show now, not just because she looks good, but she's got a lot of personality and is clever.
The new guy is ok. But what is missing now is first of all Leo is a great entertainer, and Leo and Pat both knew a lot about technolgy, past and present, that gave the show some depth.
