161  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Microsoft Surface - Surface Pro 2 unveiled on: July 06, 2014, 08:31:13 PM
1) No version gives you Office for free. Come on now - that's Microsoft's cash cow. They even 'rent' it to you for a yearly free nowadays (although my local Best Buy still had the 'buyable' version which works forever). biggrin

2) IMHO, get the $999 one (and then spend $150 for a keyboard). It has a SD-XC slot supporting up to 128GB of storage...which will cost you a SHIT TON less than Microsoft's absolutely ripoff prices for getting a bigger SSD drive. Seriously, $300 to go from 128GB to 256GB, along with 4GB of RAM to 8GB? An insult.

3) That said, I'm typing this post on my $999 model with keyboard...and I really love it. It's just the right size for a secondary laptop/tablet, it has a fantastic absurdly high resolution screen on it (so expect to use the 'zoom' function that Windows has, which has issues with a few things unfortunately), and it has a great battery life. It's even capable of gaming to a limited extent (just don't expect miracles). Although I have not tried out Steam's streaming function from my true gaming rig to see how that performs.

4) As a small laptop, and even as a tablet for reading lots of PDFs and such in a vertical orientation, I have few complaints. My big ones is that the Virtual Keyboard sucks if you're at all used to say, a cell phone keyboard or something like an iPad or such. It offers NOTHING but a basic generic keyboard. No auto correct, no auto capitalization, no auto anything. And the layout stinks.

That said, I've found out how to bring up the 'real' keyboard that has been with Windows since like forever (under the Ease of Use Access Center in Windows 8, not sure on older versions), and that keyboard is far more useful if you're say, typing with the pen or something as it's an exact duplicate of any keyboard you've seen since keyboards were widely used. And it's infinitely resizeable and minimizeable and such. In my experience however, the auto-suggest words did not work with programs I tried it on (that said, very few programs), so I dunno if that is a Windows problem or not. I'd have to test it more.

5) I've had little experience using it as a laptop on my lap, but it seems that the new magnet introduced with the new keyboard, along with the very large range of angles the stand can be put to, make it seem like it would work quite well.

6) My cat constantly walks all over this keyboard whenever she wants attention. She avoided my actual laptop I had before this. I'm not sure why.

So far, this has been a good (and expensive) purchase. I'm glad I bought it though. Any further questions? Ask away.

It’s good, very good in fact.  Do you like games like Fallout 1&2 or Baldur’s Gate?  If so you will probably like Divinity: Original Sin.  Even better if you play it in co-op.

That's a great way to put it - it plays just like the old classic games above and is absolutely amazing because of it.

If you enjoyed any of the titles listed and have fond memories of them, buy D:OS NOW. Better yet, buy TWO copies, and then you can play with a friend in co-op!

Okay, thanks!  Fortunately, it looks like the "Play & Charge" cable that comes with the full controller package is about eight feet long.  That would be plenty long enough for my needs.

I've heard that the 'play and charge' cable is just a MicroUSB cable or something very very common. Go look around first before buying something.
168  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [E3 2012] Watch Dogs on: June 16, 2014, 11:25:36 PM
So apparently Ubisoft got...lazy (as usual) when it came to the PC 'port' of this game, and as such apparently there's plenty of hidden 'unlocks' if you will to try to restore how the game looked back at E3 2014 instead of how it looks now.

Also, they did really stupid design decisions like this:
The game uses a very surreal texture implementation. For every texture, there is a basic texture with mipmaps and a higher resolution texture without mipmaps. Lower texture quality uses the medium mip of the regular texture as max. Medium texture quality uses the regular texture and high texture quality (called ultra ingame) uses regular texture BUT blend to higher texture for close ups. Close up distance depends of screen resolution. So it's a pixel/texel ratio in the end.

The problem is that I think gpu drivers are not optimized to load in memory every texture twice. They are optimized to mess with mipmaps to avoid shimmering and to save memory. Walking or driving in watch dogs implies you need to load a new big texture every time a material is near the camera. It's not the same that showing the big mip of the texture already loaded.
Really? Load the same texture twice? No wonder the game needs so much video RAM at the higher detail levels. That's frankly just...stupid.

Also, apparently this is found in the code for one of the game's files:

Cute. Real cute.

If you're curious and want to go look all of this stuff up (and try it out yourself, too), head on over here:

Does anyone know if it's possible to use Disable Helicopter while driving? I'm completely unable to look at the helicopter from my car during a chase, which means I have to get out of my car to disable the heli, and then get back in. Needless to say, that is both pointless and dangerous. There has to be a better way, right?

I had my first helicopter involved chase earlier and ran into the exact same problem. Of course, I was in the city proper so it wasn't like they'd be down low either for me to look at.

Thankfully I evaded them pretty easily. I had shaken off all the ground vehicles and all was left was the chopper. I saw a spot where a train track was overhead and slammed on my brakes underneath it. The chopper stopped and started making a slow turn, thinking that I had backed out the other direction. Once he'd made a 180 turn, I floored it, and he never saw me leaving.

I was actually pretty impressed because I figured that choppers would have super-amazing 360 degree vision, but no, they're limited too.

100% in...1-2 months after release so they can iron out the servers and game breaking bugs.
Not made by DICE, so you might be ok!
It took them HOW long to fix the 'tick rate'

Basically it's the 'server update speed' or how often it updates what is going on to all the players. Games like Counterstrike did it 60 times a second, which means that what you see is pretty much what happens.

Battlefield 4? 10. Much less bandwith is needed, yes, but the 'lag' that the game introduced to everyone is insane. Bullets going right through people? Check. Bullets missing their target as they aren't there because of the slow update? Check. A single bullet hitting the same person TWICE because they're at the perfect distance from the shooter? Check. Killing a target, and yet being killed by them because they aren't dead yet? Check.

Basically multiplayer is a complete clusterfuck due to DICE/EA's incompetence in this field. And it only took them how long to realize that this single thing was the complete problem to everything multiplayer (or for EA to 'allow' them to fix it? Sad, really.

Have some links as I poked around the 'net:

That said, I don't own BF4. I just know about its massive failures due to websites reporting on it.

Then I had one to take down a convoy of 6 cars while keeping two guys alive, and I must have failed that 20 times before finally getting lucky.  And there were others as well where I just failed super quickly after spending several minutes getting to that point.  That doesn't feel good at all and made me quit multiple times.

If that's the same one I did, then it was simple (sorta, but exploitative) - basically if you follow the path, you'll find a place in the middle where they have to drive down a tight alleyway that you can raise a Barrier on to block off. Thing is, as soon as you do (no matter if they're in the alley or not), the AI no longer has a way to get through the yellow line and it knows this ( So the vehicles all stop and the yellow line vanishes and then they charge directly after you on foot or in their vehicle.

When that happened, it was just a matter of fighting them off while under solid cover in said alleyway, making sure not to shoot the two targets that must be meleed down. Then I killed everyone else and meleed the last two and I won. And nobody called the cops because I was in the middle of said alleyway, and nobody heard me (somehow).

Other tricks to the Convoy missions - the AI tends to always follow the yellow line to the letter, so get ahead of the vehicles and toss down some IEDs or something that you can remotely detonate. BOOM! There goes a car or two right off the bat. And then you're under solid cover for the incoming firefight. If you don't have that, find a spot you can Raise Barrier and wait for them to approach, and pull off the same trick.

I haven't encountered helicopters yet, but there are a lot of 'underground' roadways (the blue line on the map I think). Head there. And rarely you'll find garage doors and such you can duck into.

Still, strange that it gave you those kinds of missions without being able to hack helicopters (you get the ability to buy the skill like 3 main missions into the game).

Is there a tutorial for raising the barriers when driving, or a way to practice?  Seems like you have to initiate the hack to raise them before you get there and when I've done it, my car hit them and not my pursuers.
it turns blue if it will hit your pursuer

Also you can activate those just after you've passed the light/blocker. It'll maintain the 'target lock' on the hack button for a very short while after you've passed by. Or (on the PC version at least) hit Shift to look behind you and activate it from there.

I have a hell of a time losing the cops at all. My car gets beat to all hell before I lose them. And I'm not sure what I'm doing exactly to lose them in the first place. Then as I go to the drop off location I get detected by the helicopter. And once that happens I can't lose that at all.

As mentioned, it's really about having all the starter hacking skills. Also being able to drive with the best of them helps a ton. Although if you're facing helicopters without the option to disable them...yeah, I got nothing (short of hiding in a garage somewhere).

When I need to dodge the cops (or whatever might be following me) I fire off as many of the hack things as I can assuming somebody is close to me. Additionally, if they're -very- close, the 'push button to hack X' should be flickering at you, which means that there's a very high chance that your trick will succeed spectacularly (for traffic lights I don't know if it 'cheats' for you, but the others mean that the vehicle in question is in the perfect spot) assuming you're not in the way of it.

If the fuzz is right on top of you and pushing your car, push right back. I seem to be able to 'out muscle' them (but maybe it's the cars I pick or my few upgrades, I dunno), and I can use that to push them right into other vehicles, or parts of walls, or something that won't just break apart when they hit it. Enemy vehicles as a whole (at least in my point in the game, no idea if this holds up for later) can take a LOT less damage than the player car can (no matter what you're driving), so if you push them into something once or twice, odds are they're garbage.

Finally - when you do break line of sight (you can now see a circle you need to escape from), floor it. At that point, all you need to do is stay out of any vehicle's visual range (which is smaller than you think) until you hit the edge of the circle and then you're home free. Also triggering extra vehicle stoppage things (traffic lights or blockers) is still useful too as it might keep them busy when they hit them whenever.

One last thing - bridges aren't too useful to trigger IMHO. Yes, no enemy vehicle will think of jumping them (but you can with just a bit of speed) and will always pull away, but they also tend to override your command if there's a vehicle already on them...or something. They just tend to work randomly for me.

Still really enjoying this. Also starting to get annoyed when the game just hitches and hitches BADLY (on the PC). It doesn't skip frames when it gets really, really bad - it just starts to take longer and longer to draw them. I don't know what the hell is going on. I do know my PC can definitely handle it though, so it's not that (and yes, I have the latest NVidia drivers released like today for this game).

On the flip side, the game is so much fun. I love being chased by somebody, as I can turn the entire city into a weapon (raise the Blockers just as I pass by them, or flip a traffic light as the insane citizens don't see if the cross-street is clear before hitting the gas, or other random fun things) to escape. Also I love sneaking around in places where I shouldn't be, headshotting people with my silenced pistol to get them out of my way.

All in all, the AI is fun to mess around with. biggrin

Not sure where I became the target of an AA™ post, but I'm going with the PS4 version myself due to some issues that were brought up with AMD cards.

Although I'm now seeing that the source may be mis-represented.  I'm looking for some comparison videos.

Now here's the part that doesn't make ANY sense:

The current generation consoles ARE AMD PROCESSORS AND ATI GRAPHIC CARDS. Why the HELL are things like this happening? Is this NVidia just buying their way into a 'hopefully better PC market'?

Why am I asking this? Of course they are.

Anyhow: PC version is a lot of fun. Very solid and runs great with good hardware. The game is VERY VERY VERY designed for a controller however. Vehicle acceleration seems to be 'tap W for slow speed, tap W again to go to fast, tap W again to go full throttle'. There's like no inbetween at all.

And navigating the shop screens? There's no mouse arrow. There's no WASD support for these huge lists of things to buy (like if you're in a weapon or clothing shop). Just keep moving the mouse down and down and down and down and down and down.

The game just SCREAMS 'PC port'.

Interesting. Problem being is that you can't expect that extra processing power to be available to use in the first place. And people might be rather upset that the console without Kinect would get extra FPS/graphical details because they have the power to spare.

The first E3, when the Kinect was introduced, it looked revolutionary.  The promise of this thing was massive and readily apparent.  A year later at E3, it seemed less so.  Then they released a product that they admit was gimped to make it affordable.  Many bought and raved about it, even here.  Then, over time, it became apparent that it was kinda worthless.

I remember that. I was with my brother who won a contest and the prize was for two to go to see the Xbox Press Conference that year. The Kinect looked amazing. Utterly amazing. And Peter Molyneu's (however you spell his name anyhow) demo with it was even more so.

Of course his demo never came to life, and Kinect was...well, it was never properly both last generation and now this one. And it could never do the things shown on video, either (at least not to that accuracy, anyhow). It was a good idea, but the technology (still) isn't there. And it's really hurting the XB1 right now, as it eats a fair chunk of processing power to do pretty much nothing.

Wonder if the Kinectless-XB1s will have that processing power restored. I doubt it, now that I think about it.

Agreed. But now it's going to be dead dead DEAD.  First adopters are getting screwed by this.
business as usual.  either it's by a significant price cut (3DS), dearth of 3rd party games (WiiU), bad hardware builds (360), downgraded controller (PS3), or unfulfilled promises (Kinect 1/PS Move).

Pretty much. Also, don't forget not buying games at launch because they'll no doubt have a 'this version has all the DLC and everything else' 6 months later.

Still, I have to laugh how Microsoft insisted that it couldn't be removed. That said, the UI absolutely blows without being able to tell the XB1 'Xbox, do this'. One step becomes 5, easily.

Kinect is dead (again) this generation.

Yeah, it looks like there will be no Xb1 version, unfortunately. The official reason is they got their dev kits late and didn't want to hold up development of the game to get a xb1 version out. They also have been rather disparaging in their comments about the I don't see it in the cards for the system.

Well, the problem is that Microsoft has a 'if you don't release it the same day, if not earlier, as you do any other console version, then you can fuck off and we don't want it on the XB1' policy.

Also, quite enjoying the game myself (as I said in this week's release thread). Ron's GT review I pretty much agree with, although I'd grade it slightly higher (7 to 7.5 out of 10) myself. At least from my limited playtime.

I never thought I'd say this, but yeah, I hit the unsub button the other day too (before my first 'free' month was up).

Partly because changing my subscription type was fucking royal pain in the ass (seriously, it DOES NOT WORK on your average laptop monitor resolution, and needs something bigger), and partly because I just don't play it any more, but I hit unsub and for now, I'm not looking back.

ESO has a lot of problems. So many areas of it just scream, "This is our first MMO, and we didn't learn a single fucking thing whatsoever in all the other MMOs that have come out in the last decade." It's really really sad.

This would have been a MUCH better game had it just been co-op with up to 4 other of your friends. And nobody else.

I've been going sword and magic myself. Basically Daggers is the high risk/high reward (with lots of DPS on one target but not too good of a way to defend yourself), Sword is more technical and slower, with the ability to hit multiple targets and powerful counters, and Magic is a force multiplier (especially enchanting your weapons to do fire damage for 15 seconds or so).

I haven't quite finished the Swamp yet (but I think I'm getting close), and so far I'd give it a solid 7.5/10. The story is pretty generic but it works, the voice acting ranges from okay to bad (but not, "Jill, the Master of Lockpicking" bad), nice graphics (on the PC with everything maxed), and very solid (and VERY difficult on Normal) combat (which I'm really enjoying).

Also crafting works (but it's mainly a way to tailor your weapons and armor to your personal liking). Do you want more DPS? Crit Chance? Chance to set fire to a mob? Better defenses? Resistance to Poison? It's all there, and for the most part you have to pick and choose your upgrades.

Basically it's sorta Dark Souls except it's not just you verses the world. And you can't come back from the dead short of reloading your game.

IMHO, if you have an itch for a decent action-RPG with solid combat, buy this game. It's also priced right ($40 for the PC version) for what it is.

EDIT: A 2/10 review? A 4.5/10 review? Oh hell no. BBF is NOT that bad of a game. GameInformer's review header of, "A Solid RPG Snack" is a good way of putting this game.

I have a bunch of large apps that don't all fit on my iPad.  I keep them on the computer and iTunes keeps them updated.  Only now if I connect the iPad to the computer and try to install one, iTunes tries to install every app that's not on the iPad.  Needless to say, they don't all fit.  What am I doing wrong?  At first, it seems to allocate the correct amount of space on the iPad for the app.  Then, within five seconds, it decides to put everything on the iPad.  Help.

While this won't be a helpful response, I had iTunes do pretty much the same thing - it tried to dump everything I had on my iPad onto my iPhone when I plugged them both in to back them up.

...despite the iPhone having half the space my iPad has.

It's very...stupid at times.

So...the upgrade to the full unlock costs $50. But from the wording on the PS Blog post its seems this is treated not like a sale item but the free games you get with the sub. If the PS+ sub ever lapse you lose access tot he game. I really hope this is a miscommunication on their part...

This is exactly what everyone thinks at this point - the 'discount' is only yours while you keep your PS+ sub. So you don't really 'own' it unless you spend the full $60.

In short, don't gimp yourself by trying to save $10.

EDIT: You also get some kind of demo by just having PS+, but it's absolutely not the full game at all.

It looks like Bound by Flame is available right now if you order digitally.  So no need to wait for Friday.

Mine is currently downloading, and I don't know for sure that I'll get a chance to play today, so I can't confirm.
Interesting, I see Steam still says the game will unlock in 1 day and 17 hours.  Did you end up buying it on the PS4?

Yeah, it's available digitally on the PS4 (maybe digitally on the PS3/360 too) right now. Steam won't have it until, yeah, then. And retail is Friday.

*continues to grumble*
