*jaw drops*

Holy shit. This looks absolutely amazing.

Final Fantasy who? I want this game, and I want this game NOW.

Maybe it's just the nastalga in me (as I've played every DW that came out since the beginning), or maybe because I've been disappointed in all of the 'next gen' Final Fantasies (7, 8, 10, 10.5, 11), but this is a game I want to play, and play this instant.

Note - I have no idea if this image is true or not, but I found it funny.

Worse comes to worse.. reflash the router with a new firmware upgrade (or even with the current one that you already have)

That's ultimately what I had to do. My router was behind by, oh, about a year and a half worth of revisions (purchased right as G technology was appearing, as I wanted it to be current). If you don't patch those routers, laptops and PCs with that newfangled Speedboost technology will rip them apart as I found out.

That is who is in my team.

I'm just about to the place in life where if it is an RPG and doesn't come come from Bioware, it's not worth having.

I *enjoy* Bioware games.  I spend little time reloading and lots of time enjoying.  Great stories.  Great gameplay.

Well, both Storm and Nightcrawler can be pretty weak if you don't boost them up right (or let the AI take control of them anyway). My team was Wolverine, Cyclops, Iceman, and Jean Grey. The only place I ever had problems was in the very last level. That combo covers all the basics and all the resistances.

Short of that, it was a piece of cake.

15291  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Possible blown router? on: October 31, 2004, 04:43:31 AM
Okay, so here's the deal:

I currently have a nice config - a Linksys Wireless-G router watching over both my PC and a wireless enabled laptop.

Today, I borrowed my boss' PC from work, as he was having a few issues with it. I'm good with fixing issues, so now I have two PCs handy.

I decide to get my boss' PC online. Thinking absolutely nothing of it, I set up the router permissions (WEP and such), and try to connect it to my router.

Suddenly, my laptop (which was enjoying itself streaming music from online), loses its wireless connection to my router. And the other laptop won't connect to my router either.

So I fire up my PC. Odd - I don't have a connection to the internet.

Chalking it up as a glitch in the router, I reset the thing. I get the internet again, but for only about 20 seconds before I lose it.

Try again - exact same results.

So I reboot the router again, but I take my PC and log into the router as well and look at the settings. 20 seconds later, I can't connect to the router anymore. It's like the software inside of it just froze or something.

So I break out a pen and do a 'reset to factory defaults' button push. 20 seconds again into operation, the router freezes.

On a whim, I turn off all wireless features of my router. Like magic, my router stays online.

I just can't connect to it via anything related to it wirelessly without freezing the thing.

The router itself works great. I have 3 PCs now hooked up to it, and all three can connect to the 'net and see any shared folders between them. But as soon as I enable the wireless features of my router, the router hard locks and kills any landline connections.

Any suggestions? Or did I blow something somehow?

EDIT: Update - it looks like that a most major needed firmware upgrade fixed my issues. At least for now, anyway. smile

i know that GTA VC has given people a lot of trouble, and that i had the black screen thing with one of the Crash B. games, now i'm wondering if that was the problem...

I know for a fact that one of the Contra titles on the system is a dual-layer, as that was the title to use to make sure your console was 'fixed' in the article I used to fix my PS2.

I thought there was a certain color on the back of the DVD if it was a dual-layer, but after comparing Norrath to other DVD discs, I don't see a difference.
15294  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [p] Is Bush really better at the war on terror on: October 27, 2004, 05:56:51 PM
I doubt you'll see another post from me ever on politics, but let me put it this way why this election is just screwed up:

Okay, when two new people are running for election (previous president hits his 8 years, steps down, whatever), it should be a simple 'this guy verses this guy' 'battle'. You don't know anything about either person short of their history before trying to run for president.

However, for a reelection, it should be a fight between what the previous president did and the new guy. It should be a 'look at what the president did in his last four years, and if you want him in office for another four', not a 'this guy verses this guy' battle.

Unfortunately, the average public is just so dumb, they don't look at what Bush did the last four years in office. Instead, they just look at the person to person fight. They look at all the political bullshit that both sides toss around.

I for one don't care who takes the office 'throne', but I sure as hell don't want Bush there for another four years. I for one would vote for somebody like Nader or an unknown if it meant that it kept Bush out of office.

Yes, I feel that he screwed up that bad overall in his last four years, and that's that. I don't want to take the chance of seeing him do anything worse.

Discuss, as I won't be back. smile

To show you how unreal these 'real world' numbers are, Palm (makers of the Palm Pilot), insist that my Palm Tungsten T|3 lasts for 4-6 hours under real use conditions.

Try like 3, tops. And that's if I'm not going overboard with the processor (just typing away on my Word clone, instead of using my Bluetooth connection to surf the net while listening to .mp3 files).

Combine that with the fact that you have to buy (or rebuy) these mini-DVDs to watch movies on the thing, and I don't exactly see this as a winner. A threat to Nintendo, yes, but not a true winner.

There are 4 main AT's with each AT having 3 classes, each class having 2 subclasses.

To be completely technical:

There are 4 main classes (Fighter, Priest, Mage, Scout), that each have 3 classes that split off from that (which you choose at level 10). From there, you'll advance to one of two final classes at level 20, which is based on if you're a Qeynos or Freeport (good or evil) citizen.

And, yes, the Good/Evil classes will be dramatically different. The same subclass for the Fighter, for example, can promote you to either a Paladin or a Shadow Knight. Each will get their own set of spells/abilities.

So, in short, to have a character for every class, you'd need 24 (4 main x 3 classes x 2 good/evil choice) character slots.

This is why people are complaining about how 4 slots are too few. Add in the fact that the Froglok class is locked until they're 'rescued' after launch, and you'll see the reasons.

15298  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / More SOE BS on: October 27, 2004, 03:33:45 PM
BTW - us beta testers are fighting tooth and nail to get that 'overall character number' up to 8. I doubt it'll happen, but...

And as far as FFXI went - the reason that one character was enough was that you could change that character into any of the classes you wanted to at any time. In EQ2, you can't do that.

The group death penality is nothing to worry about. Basically it gives you a reason to keep everyone alive in combat. It's no longer 'every man for himself' when things go bad.
15299  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Champions of Norrath 'black screen of death' problem on: October 27, 2004, 03:27:52 PM
The whole problem is that CoN is a dual-layer DVD, one of like 3 titles in the entire PS2 lineup that does so.

And, as your PS2 wears down, the first thing to do is this ability. Personally, I had to open up my 'bought at launch' PS2 and clean/adjust the thing in order for CoH to even work. Odds are you might have to do so as well.

Mounts solely between towns or set locations is stupid. They should have copied ultima online and allowed mounts any time (note: having real mounts is such a general idea that you really can't say it is copying)

Both titles allow you to purchase a mount for general riding. You can use them in dungeons (obviously), but when wandering around the 'overworld', they're used to get from point A to point B much faster and safer.

However, the mounts that only travel to certain points are nice in their own way, as you can use them early on when you have little funds and levels.

Personally, this is the biggest 'issue' that Sony has to overcome with this, or any, MMO they release - their not-so-wonderful past with EQ1 and SWG.

Hell - their inepitude with Star Wars Galaxies alone is enough to make people swear to never buy another Sony MMO again.

15311  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / exploring in WoW & EQ2 on: October 24, 2004, 12:17:38 AM
In EQ2, you start off in one of two very different cities, depending on your allignment.

Qeynos is the good city. Everything is beautiful, everybody knows your name, and life is like out of a Disney movie. You'll also find a mini-home of the 'good' races of EQ1 there in each of the city zones. The nearby zones (and dungeons) are also more of the same pretty vistas.

Freeport is the evil city. Everything is dank and dark, the people call you worthless scum, and if you looked up evil in the dictionary, you'd find a picture of this place. The nearby zones show the same dark outlook on life as well.

If you have a high-end PC and video card, you'll find some amazing looking realistic vistas in EQ2. While WoW went for a more 'cartoony' look (but don't get me wrong - I still loved how WoW look), I prefer the realistic looking lands of EQ2.

Also, that 5-10 hour a week limit would be enough for either game. Both titles aren't geared (at least based on what I've seen) for long, drawn out dungeon crawls. Yes, you can spend some time in the dungeons, but there's always an exit somewhere nearby. Now, I haven't played either beta to high levels, so I don't know what the end-game is like, but both titles are nothing like EQ1's slow-paced gameplay.

Well, that's the other side of the coin. Retailers like EB tend to get their information from somewhere, and more often than not, they're right.

Is EQ2 ready for release? Based on what I'm playing right now, I'd be ready to pay to play it as long as some of the main issues (lag and overcrowding related problems for the most part - both of which would be solved by more servers) are fixed.

That and there's some issue of an overcute dragon on my preorder that suddenly really drew my attention...

It's also a strategic decision - do I take the time to cast Create Food (and burn the mana) to complete the wheel, or do I just nuke the guy? The wheel was designed to have trade-offs, not be a side effect of casting every offensive spell you would have cast anyway.

The HO (Heroic Opportunity) wheel is very...strange. But it's amazingly effective as well.

Let me describe the one that I see:

I'm in a group of three (myself and two friends who happen to be in the Beta as well). We consist of a Fighter (Crusader to be exact), Priest (Shaman), and Mage (Wizard).

When the Fighter pulls (arrow, taunt ability, etc), he opens with a Kick (does damage). That move starts off the HO chain, which gives us 4 different options to spread out the chain.

The Priest continues with the Smite ability (also does damage), which continues the HO chain. It still hasn't 'locked' in yet, so any miscast here will cancel the whole thing. Now there's another (and only one) ability available to continue the chain with.

Then the Mage casts Lightning (also does damage), and that finishes off the start of the HO wheel. Now it's 'locked' in, which means that it becomes a timed event. Once we all cast the spells associated with the chain, the HO will fire off.

I've seen a common HO wheel (Fighter does a damage move, mage casts a damage spell, and the Priest casts regen), which then completes to do a bonus damage of about all three of us hitting the mob with another damage spell (combined), or a more rare one (two buffs and a damage from the mage), which tends to do a bit weaker damage as a result, but also buffs or heals the entire party.

The HO system is complicated, but VERY rewarding for those more difficult encounters.  Odds are though that unless you're with a good team leader (or have a good set group like I have), you won't be pulling it off consistantly.

One thing to keep in mind though - you can still pull off this combo solo. Some classes have it a bit easier than others, but all classes can do solo HOs.

Personally though, I've never seen a HO that requires things like Create Food in order to complete though. Normally they're useful things like buffs or the Taunt ability of the Warrior. Things that you'd use in the course of battle, but not things you'd always use.

LE's complaints are all valid, also the game cheats and deliberately breaks the gauge if you use your character to fight. Thus you must either not fight at all if you want the gauge up which isn't too fun or you fight without the gauge, which kinda eliminates the purpose of it in the first place.  So you end up avoiding battle which also sucks because you can't just sit there and watch them fight because the AI will nearly always give chase to your character forcing you to spend every battle running around in circles. Not fun at all.

Now, I always actually fought in battles, and I never had any real problems of the gague breaking short of boss fights. Yes, there were some cheap instances of the enemies getting through my guard, but beyond that, I had little problem (short of the end areas, anyway) getting the bonus gague up and running. 10-15 battles without a break were pretty common for me.

Like jersoc, I loved the game. In fact, I reviewed it over here. biggrin

It had a fun combat system (with dumb AI, unfortunately), a great story (and one mother of a twist), 50-60 hours of gameplay (can extend that into 100+ EASILY if you want to do everything), and had a great musical soundtrack.

There are exactly two OS's you should choose between when building a computer system (especially if you want to play any games):

Windows 98 and Windows XP.

And Windoes 98 isn't supported by Microsoft (or pretty much anybody, for that matter) anymore, so the choice is pretty easy.
