15241  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / NFL pay per view would be sweet on: October 17, 2004, 08:28:58 PM

Why is the NFL so exclusive?

If I had to guess I'd say it revolves around "money issues", and the NFL and their owners keeping more of it in their pockets and not sharing it with another provider of game coverage.

Or purchase Sirius Radio, which has the entire game (with other special features) from both the home and away team perspectives.

No, I really don't know what they exactly do, but I do know they advertise those features really heavily.

I am most absolutelying watching this tonight. I haven't flipped on the TV to watch anything but the news for months now, and I figure this would be a good way to break in the TV again. biggrin

From what I hear this miniseries is absolutely fantastic. If you're a Farscape fan at all you do NOT want to miss this.

To my knowledge there aren't any frequency 'adjustments' for any wireless mice (although I could be totally wrong here), so I'm guessing you might have a few issues.

But I don't use wireless, so I can't honestly answer your question.
15245  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: The Community "Upgrade or not to upgrade" PC t on: October 17, 2004, 07:27:01 PM
Well, I'm one of those who believes in pretty much being at the top of the line (more or less), so here's the results if you spend lots of cash for a PC (ah, the joys of being single):

Althon AMD XP 3000+
ASUS...something. Don't crack the case often enough to check.
2x Crucial 512MB PC2700 DDR RAM
ATI X800XT (just upgraded from a 9700 Pro)
Onboard sound (Creative Labs can *bleep* off)
120GB WD and 80GB Maxtor HDs
Lite-on DVD Drive
Plextor DVD-R/CD-RW 4/2.4/8/32/16/48 (something like that)
WinXP

To answer your question: Another 512MB will make a world of difference, as WinXP (and other programs) just fly with that much in. That 9800 Pro is still going strong, although the processor is starting to lag.

Also, definitely pick up at least a 80GB drive and reinstall WinXP on that. Starting from scratch will give you a huge speed boost (as Knightshade Dragon keeps reminding me), especially if you've used WinXP for a long time.

I have been doing PC tech support for 6+ years now and I still have problems getting Windows networking to work right (I call it "Microsoft Notworking").  Here's some other stuff to try:

-Make sure all PCs are in the same workgroup.  Right click My Computer and click Properties.  Click the Computer Name tab at the top.  You can change it from here.

I knew there was something else I was missing as far as getting PCs to talk to one another. And that was it.

Thanks for the addendum, egrudzin.

Windows Networking is such a pain, and it really shouldn't...
15247  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: GBA questions of all sorts on: October 17, 2004, 07:08:47 PM
Quote from: "Chrisoc13"
Well, im heading off to europe on wensday, and I wanted to have a GBA SP for the trip, sinc I will be spending lots of time on trains. What is the cost difference in europe as compared to the US? Will it still work with the US games? Im wondering about these questions because I might be purchasing it when I get to europe.

The other option was getting it before I leave. I have a 15 hour plane flight before I go, so I wouldnt mind it for that either. But, although Im not sure this fits here, what would my options be for power when I get to europe? How would I be able to recharge it? Is there somewhere I can get a european charger that works the same once I get there? Or an adaptor of some sort?

Well, Nintendo has always never had any lockout on their portable consoles, so a GBA SP (or GB, GBC, or GBA) are fully compatible with all games across the world without any modification. So, in short, if you purchase your console in the US, it'll work on all European games (and vice versa).

As far as power goes... The GBA SP comes with a recharger device for the console. All you'll need to do is find some way to convert the standard US plug into one that'll fit into your standard European jack. Check around your local hardware store or visit a gift shop at any International Terminal for what you'll need.

As far as the games go... Well, I don't play my SP enough to warrant answering that question. Anyone else? smile

Well I made my desision, and ill be playing EQ2. Haveing played WoW since alpha (no where near as much as eight has) there are things in WoW that really bother me. Now EQ2 might blow to but Never played it so I really dont know slywink

So, here's my question - why don't you like WoW?

Personally (as I've played both, although I stopped playing WoW as of late thanks to me getting into the EQ2 beta), both are really good games, and I see both succeeding.

But, somehow, EQ2 is drawing me in more.

Most of the problems of EQLive have been fixed. You no longer need the 'holy trinity' just to get anywhere in the game, crafting is actually useful (and is almost fun now), the graphics will look fantastic a year down the line (thanks to no current generation card being able to run the game at max detail and remain playable), and I've yet to run into any giant timesinks of the game.

Yes, their servers need a bit of tweaking (the Commonlands and Antonica, absolutely giant 'zones' that are at least (if not more) as big as the Karanas were in the original are horribly lagged at times, but they also easily support 200-300 people in the zone and still provide more than enough hunting spots for everybody.

The only true issues that I can see is that you'll really need a good (X800 or 6800 level) graphic card and 1gig of RAM just to play the game as the developers designed it - pretty. The character models are fantastic (although they need more diversity of facial hair/skin tones/hair badly), the reflections are amazing, and florna/fauna dot the landscape all over.

Any questions/concerns about EQ2? Ask away.
15249  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Networking help on: October 17, 2004, 12:18:11 AM
Personally, I never had any issues getting this to work. However...

Are both PC's running the same OS (WinXP prefered)? If they're WinXP, then all you need to do is this:

On the folders/drives you want to share, open up Explorer, Right Click the folder, and select Properties. From there, click on the Sharing tab, then click on both the 'Share this folder on the network' and 'Allow network users to change my files'.

In theory (at least for me), it worked great.

In addition, if you select this on a drive, it makes the entire drive available. WinXP will pause for a bit if you select this big of a 'folder' to make share enabled, but it'll come out of it and work fine afterwards.

Ok, recently picked this up (after Tim sent me RS for free, sorry can't remember your GG nick) and did the install. Installed just fine and RS works, but AS asks me to put in the CD. Well the CD is in the drive (CD-2), but it fails to launch. I took a look at the forums at the official site and find that some CD writers may be incompatible. So I yank a 52x drive out of another comp and install that. Still no luck. I did all the updates I could on both RS and AS. Anyone have any other ideas?

Actually, for reasons unknown, Athena Sword needs the ORIGNAL Rainbow Six 3 CD in the drive to run. The one needed to run the original RS3 itself.

I found that out too when I bought the combo package with RS3 with AS in it.

Why did they do it this way? Good question.

And, no, I'm not the same Tim mentioned above. smile

Responding to news of the leaked version - which has been circulating in various illegal channels since yesterday - the developer said, "It would seem that the French PAL version of the game has surfaced on the Internet." As for its origins: "This is almost positively the work of some jerk in the manufacturing plant who pocketed the game as it is being printed in mass for world release on the 9th of November," the update concluded.

As I played the beta, I found that it was extremely well done and could've been launched just about anytime within the past month or two.

Yes, some things aren't complete, but I look at it this way:

When was the last time that Blizzard released ANYTHING before it was 'done'?

Nope - all the Creative SB Live driver issues are caused by Creative themselves as they're all too fucking lazy to get off their fat asses and write updated drivers more than once a year (if even that).

That said - I'll NEVER EVER buy another Creative product again. My motherboard supports surround just fine (although I doubt I'll ever use anything more than 2), and it'll keep me away from Creative.

Their driver support sucks. Period. Absolute worst in the industry.

The regen times have been drastically reduced in EQ2 (due to another copied feature - eating food/drink), and soloing isn't too much of an issue that I've seen so far.

Seen it. Hated it.

In addition, I absolutely hate Opera (the person, not the browser) now.

Ever since she 'advertised' some OTC drug of some sort (of which I have NO idea what the hell it's supposed to do), I've had customer after customer come into my pharmacy looking for it.

The customer tells me some funky name I've never heard of, I promptly ask if she saw it on Opera. They say yes, I tell them to go away.

Good question. SoE is copying other things *cough*griffins*cough*, so why not the open-ended beta model?

To put things very bluntly - EQ2 is taking a lot of the issues that the original game had and fixing them. On the flip side, some say that they're going too far.

Take a look at http://www.eq2players.com (open site - everybody can look around, but you can't access the beta specific forums without a user/pass), and take a look around. Sony is pretty open about a lot of things on their site.
