15241  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I just played a Nintendo DS on: November 20, 2004, 04:21:56 PM

I'll wait till I hear more feedback from everyday gamers.

Well, I'll be picking it up on launch day, once I get home from work. Am I 'everyday' enough for you? smile

The thing is though, I don't have any current plans on picking up any games, short of the demo. I don't exactly play my GBA all that often. Metroid should be enough to keep me occupied for the time being.

A few questions. I see they support GBA games, will those have any extra functionality?

Does it have PDA functions, like an address book, etc?

The DS supports all SINGLE PLAYER GBA titles. It does NOT support any multiplayer features whatsoever, as the link cable will not work with the DS. Other than that, yes, it'll play all GBA games out there.

As for the PDA... This would be a fantastic idea. Just think - a console that can play games extremely well and be a PDA AND sell for only $150 (compared to a $300 Palm device)? Now that would sell.

The reports I've heard is that somebody haxored the admin accounts on the forums, and as thus they simply closed the thing down while they figured out what the hell happened.

As I said though - I need a browser based solution, as most software packages (I've tried Trillian and now Gush) just can't seem to get around the firewall we have up at work. Either I don't know how to configure the thing properly, or the funky way our firewall works (requiring that link I provided before) just outright stops it.

I'll give Netscape a try (had to download all the files here at home though, as once again, I couldn't get around the firewall), and I found out that has their own web based chat service as well.

Wish me luck, as I want to be lazy. smile

Gush uses a proxy and gateways so you can communicate with AIM, MSN and Yahoo networks. Unless they block the jabber network which it runs on.

The whole problem is that I access the internet via a firewall somewhere down the line (requires a user/pass to access), and as thus, most software programs simply won't accept the commands to bypass it.

That's why I liked AIM on the web - it was completely contained in the browser window. Nothing to download.

I'll give it a try, as well as Netscape's thingy. I haven't used Netscape in, well, a very long time. biggrin

To be exact, I have to type this in under the 'Automatic Configuration URL' field in Firefox:
15247  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Official Playstation Holiday 2004 Demo Disc Nukes Saves! on: November 19, 2004, 07:23:20 PM
Just wanted to post here and inform of you all that the 2005 Holiday edition of the Official Playstation disc WILL nuke your memory card if you play it:

Do you have the official Playstation Underground Demo Disk for Holiday 2004? If so, remove your memory card(s) from the console before playing Viewtiful Joe 2, or else you WILL regret it. From the Gaming-Age forums:

Everything was fine until I played the Jak 3 and VJ 2 demos on the Playstation Underground demo disk... The next time I booted up my system I went to the console to check something out and it told me that my memory card (1st party Sony) needed to be formatted.

Great. So, the demo disk erased my memory card. It was just fine before I put it in because I checked it to see something and afterwards I checked it again to see if it put any saves on my card. That's when it told me I had to reformat. I am going to try to recreate the conditions again just to verify but just a warning to be careful.

Update: I have been able to recreate this bug 100% of the time. It happens when you boot into the VJ2 demo and make it to at least the 2nd load point (where you get the mach FX).

According to posters, this is affecting any and all memory cards you may have inserted, no matter who made the card.
15248  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How to use AIM on the web without visiting on: November 19, 2004, 06:36:47 PM
I've been a lazy bum here at work over the last few months, and I've been visiting and clicking on the idiot button to use AIM on the web (as I'm behind a firewall and that keeps Trillian and anything else I usually use from working).

Well, yesterday, AOL decided to change the front page, and now instead you have to visit to access the 'bring up AIM on the web' feature.

Only one problem - is a blocked website.

So, in order to continue my lazy practices here at work, I need some way to either punch around/through my firewall (not likely), or I need some kind of link I can simply click on (or some sort of Javascript code like AOL used before).

Does anybody have any suggestions/tips?

Ripped from somewhere else:

"Getting the game to load as much of its self into memory as possible also helps a lot; to do this, right click on Half-Life 2 in steam and select properties, then click launch options, put in "-heapsize 256000" without the quote marks. For the number, choose half your total system memory, in the examples case, its for a system with 512megs ram, you should use 512000 for systems with a gig of ram."

I run a gig of RAM and I did the recommendations listed - made a HUGE difference as far as the fabled 'Loading' screen goes. And the game seems to be a bit smoother as well.

Yeah - 4 AAA titles in a single week is absurd. There's something like EIGHT this month alone.

MP2 and MGS3 are just slipping under the radar.

Here is an intersting thread that was recently started by a Blizzard mod on their board concerning the transfer (or non-transfer) of beta characters to retail.

The only MMO in recent history (or history, period) that I know of that allowed people to keep their characters was Lineage 2, and that was because the majority of testers had no plans on buying the game as it was so bad. biggrin

It's not gonna happen. At best, you'll be able to transfer your beta characters (or one of them, anyway) to their official Test server. To a retail server, it's not gonna happen. It will SO break the economy, among many, many, many other things, it's not even funny.

It seems like they have found two flaws.  One is the lag generated by all the database updates for large numbers of people.  But also handling these same large numbers of people trying to log back into the game after a restart.

Like any hugely popular MMO, the login server simply isn't meant to handle 100,000 simulatinous login attempts. biggrin

EQ has had this issue for years. I think they finally got a second server which solved most of their problems, but I'm not sure on that.

The only way to knock that off is to bitch-slap the lot of them in a Halo 2 deathmatch. biggrin So, here's the situation in Casa de Whiteboy:

Honestly, your best situation is just to get a bunch of wire and drag it up and down every time you want to play Xbox Live. It solves any extra expense/issues/whatever with getting wireless.

It's also a lot cheaper. You're looking at least $50 just getting a wireless connection hooked up (with the risk of issues) verses $10-$15 tops for a long length of cable.

Xbox Live is $50 a year. You give Microsoft your card and they'll auto-renew you each year as well.

I have terrible item / loot lag. Everything plays fine until i go to loot something or get a item from a quest..then it just sits there and I cant do anything but run around or slide around and chat in global.

From what I hear, Blizzard only has one item server. In short, whenever anybody loots, their request goes all into that server, which is outrageously overloaded right now.

There wasn't this problem in Beta or even the Stress Test. However, thanks to the Open Beta (and the 500,000 people who signed up for it), they now know the weaknesses in their system.

Blizzard knows about this and will have it fixed at launch. At least they better. smile

Looked fake to me. At that size it would pick them up and the dust swirling around it would put holes in them. The tent flying looked really fake like it was  on a wire at one corner.

The dust devil I saw was 4 lanes of street wide. It didn't do much but gather up a ton of dust and blow it around like a tornado.

Remember - they're nowhere nearly as powerful as a tornado. Hell - odds are, even if you walked into it, you'd only get pounded by small bits of rock and dust. Yeah, it would hurt, but it doesn't have the power to pick up your average human.

The reason that tent thing flew was because it was light and had a lot of surface for the wind to pick up (like a parachute).

They did change some dialogue in cut scenes to be a bit more crude, but overall nothing.

Explain, as I know I WON'T be coming back to single player of this title after the pathethic ending.

Why is the ending so bad? Let me put it this way - it's like playing an RPG for 40 hours and getting to the boss' tower/cave/dungeon/planet of doom/etc, and finding that the main door is closed. So you turn around and just go home.

It's that bad.

All that time wasted.

It wouldn't be so annoying if the game itself wasn't so much fun and had such a deep story buried inside of it. So many things left unanswered. So many little mini-plots you need to find the answer for.

Instead, you find nothing.

The whole unfortunate reason as to why you won't see any links is that the majority of people use BitTorrent to distribue things that are far from legal. Thus, any site that lists Torrents tends to violate our policy of piracy and posting links to it.

- Does race really matter in this game?  I know it did in EQ, but do the 5 extra int points really make it worth playing a dark elf mage vs a human mage or another race?

Sony designed this game to allow all races to be all classes. Yes, there are stat differences, but based on my time in beta, stats made very little difference (as that +2 int item gave you a whopping 1 extra MP at level 15).

There are some exceptions though. Don't make a Troll or Ogre Mage and expect to be an awesome mage (30ish Int difference in just starting stats between low/high), but beyond that, any race can be any class.

Just watch out for those Gnome Monks. biggrin

From what I know (as I'm no lawyer), TV shows are in the gray area right now. It's basically like recording a VHS tape of the show and giving it to a friend.

However, if the show in question isn't on the air anymore, and if the show is available for purchase otherwise, the legality of the whole thing is highly questionable.

That, my friends, is a dust devil. It's pretty much like a tornado, but it tends to be much, much weaker in power.

Unlike a tornado though, it's just spawned out of a turbulant bit of wind, so they can't be predicted at all. Pretty common occurance to see in places like Arizona and the like.

Then again, that one was nothing. I saw one that stopped traffic on one of the major streets here in AZ - the dust devil was as wide as 4 lanes of the road. People on both sides just stopped as it slowly rumbled on by.

Overall last night was a perfectly smooth experience. A great first day for an MMORPG. No sign up problems, no patching problems, no crashing, no lag. I am sure a lot of this had to do with the fact that the game was released in such limited quantities yesterday. Hopefully It won't be a complete disaster when I try to login tonight.

Out of curiosity, if you head back down the dock from where you 'spawn' on the island, you'll find a bell. If you Right Click on it, you can bring up an option to travel to another Island zone.

What's the highest number you can choose from? And, in addition, when you first zone into the Island, you'll see 'Island of (forgot name) X', where X is the instance that you're currently on. I think it's also on the map as well.

I'm trying to get an unofficial figure as to how many players are playing on prime time, incase you're asking, as I decided not to pick up this game based on my latter experiences in beta. smile

If you don't want to bust open your case to install one, look at . It's what I've been using for a while now, and I'm quite happy with it.

Keep in mind that recording performance (recording TV programs) will be extremely poor with this product due to the slow speeds of the USB 1 standard. Notice the fine print of 'Note: video performance when using USB 1.1 or 2.0 is the same.'.

Pick up the USB2 version instead ( if your PC can handle it if you're not interested in opening her up.

On the flip side, I've used a Hauppage card (one of their really older products) for a long time and it works great.

One thing to keep in mind though - if you intend to do any kind of recording, make sure that you can record in RAW AVI mode. You need a card that does NOT do MPEG compression on the fly.

Why? Well, the image that you'll see on your screen will lag behind what's actually being seen by about 2-3 seconds as the image is being compressed on the fly behind your back (and odds are you can't turn it off). Why is this important? If you intend to record something under your control (say, a video game or something), it'll be impossible, as you can't play anything with that kind of video lag.
