15161  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Everquest 2 - first impressions on: November 11, 2004, 06:57:02 AM
Quote from: "Scott"
- Does race really matter in this game?  I know it did in EQ, but do the 5 extra int points really make it worth playing a dark elf mage vs a human mage or another race?

Sony designed this game to allow all races to be all classes. Yes, there are stat differences, but based on my time in beta, stats made very little difference (as that +2 int item gave you a whopping 1 extra MP at level 15).

There are some exceptions though. Don't make a Troll or Ogre Mage and expect to be an awesome mage (30ish Int difference in just starting stats between low/high), but beyond that, any race can be any class.

Just watch out for those Gnome Monks. biggrin

Is this legal?

From what I know (as I'm no lawyer), TV shows are in the gray area right now. It's basically like recording a VHS tape of the show and giving it to a friend.

However, if the show in question isn't on the air anymore, and if the show is available for purchase otherwise, the legality of the whole thing is highly questionable.

WTF was that?

That, my friends, is a dust devil. It's pretty much like a tornado, but it tends to be much, much weaker in power.

Unlike a tornado though, it's just spawned out of a turbulant bit of wind, so they can't be predicted at all. Pretty common occurance to see in places like Arizona and the like.

Then again, that one was nothing. I saw one that stopped traffic on one of the major streets here in AZ - the dust devil was as wide as 4 lanes of the road. People on both sides just stopped as it slowly rumbled on by.

Overall last night was a perfectly smooth experience. A great first day for an MMORPG. No sign up problems, no patching problems, no crashing, no lag. I am sure a lot of this had to do with the fact that the game was released in such limited quantities yesterday. Hopefully It won't be a complete disaster when I try to login tonight.

Out of curiosity, if you head back down the dock from where you 'spawn' on the island, you'll find a bell. If you Right Click on it, you can bring up an option to travel to another Island zone.

What's the highest number you can choose from? And, in addition, when you first zone into the Island, you'll see 'Island of (forgot name) X', where X is the instance that you're currently on. I think it's also on the map as well.

I'm trying to get an unofficial figure as to how many players are playing on prime time, incase you're asking, as I decided not to pick up this game based on my latter experiences in beta. smile

LOL sorry guys. Looks like Blizzard's completely FUBAR'ed handling of stress tests and open beta continues.

Launch scares me. In fact, I might just wait till tuesday.

Let me put it this way - MILLIONS of people want to try this game for absolutely free, easily. There's no way in hell Blizzard could even think of preparing for that kind of server slam.

I just hope they have enough servers ready for release...

Slow for me too. I am sure Ron knows and is working on it.

Finally nailed this one down.  A pair of core routers of AT&T's went down late last night causing some severe routing latency.  Apparently some folks felt it for a lot of sites whereas some folks only felt it on things that are more bandwidth intensive (database run items).  All makey fixey now though from what I've seen.  Anyone seeing residual effects?
It's nice and fast now for me. Give it a bit of time for the internet to reroute itself or something (or for people to stop downloading the WoW beta smile ).

These are just like the cats, hawks, and other beasties you can buy to have follow you around and generally look cute.

Makes me glad I have the Collector's Edition reserved now... biggrin

Antonia Bayle ( I believe that is the name) is the roleplaying preferred server.  My guild is voting currently as to which server we are going to, hoping to end up on the rp preferred server.

I can't believe they finally marked one as 'roleplaying prefered'. Throughout beta they pretty much ignored any and all requests by us testers to put up a roleplaying server.

I wonder if they caved in and increased the 4 player per account limit...

If you don't want to bust open your case to install one, look at . It's what I've been using for a while now, and I'm quite happy with it.

Keep in mind that recording performance (recording TV programs) will be extremely poor with this product due to the slow speeds of the USB 1 standard. Notice the fine print of 'Note: video performance when using USB 1.1 or 2.0 is the same.'.

Pick up the USB2 version instead ( if your PC can handle it if you're not interested in opening her up.

On the flip side, I've used a Hauppage card (one of their really older products) for a long time and it works great.

One thing to keep in mind though - if you intend to do any kind of recording, make sure that you can record in RAW AVI mode. You need a card that does NOT do MPEG compression on the fly.

Why? Well, the image that you'll see on your screen will lag behind what's actually being seen by about 2-3 seconds as the image is being compressed on the fly behind your back (and odds are you can't turn it off). Why is this important? If you intend to record something under your control (say, a video game or something), it'll be impossible, as you can't play anything with that kind of video lag.

And I agree with Valhuerdi - WoW's open beta starts tomorrow, so barring a sudden crash of the internet or something, go give it a try absolutely free.

* Immersion.  I really want to feel like I'm in another place.
* Detail.  Want to have the new cool items I get, look great too and be worth the time and effort.
* Low grind value.  I don't want to have to put a bazillion hours into the game to have fun.
* I like to solo 90% of the time.
* I did like Dark Age of Camelot quite a bit (except the long travel times).
* I like City of Heroes, but once I got t level 32 I stopped playing though I still have my account.

Having betaed both EQ2 and WoW, let me answer these questions as to who I think wins and give an answer as to why:

Immersion - WoW. EQ2 looks too real while the cartoony look really draws you into their world.

Detail - Tie. EQ2's amazing player models are fantastic to look at if you have the system, and some of the stuff I've seen is great. WoW stays away from the details, but still looks fantastic in its own rights.

Low Grind Value - WoW by a landslide. The game just doesn't feel like a grind at all with how they've designed their zones and quest system. Some would say it's too easy of a MMO as a result, but I'm not complaining.

Soloability - WoW dumps a mountain on EQ2 as it buries it so much. Once again, with WoW so easy, every class is capable of soloing without pretty much any problems. The loads of zones allows you to simply visit somewhere else if you want different mobs and a different challenge. Each zone is also based around a set level, but each starting 'land' tends to have their own set path you can follow upon.

EQ2 allows you to solo, somewhat, but comeon - this game is the sequel to the game that required the 'holy trinity' just to get ANYWHERE in the upper levels of the game. Unless you were a Bard or Necro, soloing was so slow and painful you didn't want to do it. I have to say though that EQ2 is better than EQ was in the soloability aspect, but it's nowhere near WoW.
15175  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Halo 2 Reviews - IGN/Gamespot/Gamespy (Poss. Spoilers) on: November 08, 2004, 01:50:22 AM
Quote from: "Kevin Grey"
What I will believe is that some level of perceived site integrity is at stake with major titles.  After having gotten their readers into a fervor with years of previews sites will effectively force a self-fulfilling prophecy onto themselves by giving reviews that justify the level of hype.

Then there is the issue of readership- IGN was hatemail bombed for their mediocre review of Killzone.  There are already people crying online about GS's outstanding score of 9.4.  These readers are completely irrational but they are customers of the site and a negative review could cause a loss in readership.

You sir are an extremly rare breed of gamer - you actually look beyond the reviews and all important numbers to not only the game itself, but the percieved perception of how a site's readership will react to a score that doesn't fit along with their expectations.

From my reading, Gamespot is a very harsh site when it comes to handing out scores. That's why I also trust them more than IGN and Gamespy. Maybe it's because they're now the underdog, if you will (as incase you've forgotten, IGN and Gamespy are the same company now), but their scores look at the game as a whole, comparing it to what a console should be able to do (which is why they tend to knock a game for being a simple port).

They also don't seem to let hype get in the way with their reviewing.

That's what I, as a reviewer, try to do as well.

Think on the reviews and keep them in mind when you play Halo 2 starting late tomorrow night. Come back once you've beaten the game and discuss what your feelings are then.

When did you play the game all the way through? Hm? Also given that there's only ONE review that says anything bad about the campaign, I'd have to say at this point that particular opinion is the exception and not the rule.

Remember, as I've said before as I've talked to somebody who got the game early - Gamespot's review is spot on as far as the single player story goes. It does end badly and it is short.

I think it's more about the ads, as others have said. They have to call this game of the year on the Xbox, and they can't say anything negative about it.

GTA4 anyone (and IGN's 9.9 score)? smile

So how do these work?  Do you get all 4 traits right away on level1?  Do they grow in power as you level?

One of a few ways, as far as I know of - either you'll get these all at once (doubtful), you'll gain all four skills as you level automatically (possible), or you'll get to choose between one of the four skills as you hit certain levels (most likely).

But I honestly don't know the answer. Nice abilities though. Gives you a reason to play one race over another.

Okay, so here's the deal:

I currently have a nice config - a Linksys Wireless-G router watching over both my PC and a wireless enabled laptop.

Today, I borrowed my boss' PC from work, as he was having a few issues with it. I'm good with fixing issues, so now I have two PCs handy.

I decide to get my boss' PC online. Thinking absolutely nothing of it, I set up the router permissions (WEP and such), and try to connect it to my router.

Suddenly, my laptop (which was enjoying itself streaming music from online), loses its wireless connection to my router. And the other laptop won't connect to my router either.

So I fire up my PC. Odd - I don't have a connection to the internet.

Chalking it up as a glitch in the router, I reset the thing. I get the internet again, but for only about 20 seconds before I lose it.

Try again - exact same results.

So I reboot the router again, but I take my PC and log into the router as well and look at the settings. 20 seconds later, I can't connect to the router anymore. It's like the software inside of it just froze or something.

So I break out a pen and do a 'reset to factory defaults' button push. 20 seconds again into operation, the router freezes.

On a whim, I turn off all wireless features of my router. Like magic, my router stays online.

I just can't connect to it via anything related to it wirelessly without freezing the thing.

The router itself works great. I have 3 PCs now hooked up to it, and all three can connect to the 'net and see any shared folders between them. But as soon as I enable the wireless features of my router, the router hard locks and kills any landline connections.

Any suggestions? Or did I blow something somehow?

EDIT: Update - it looks like that a most major needed firmware upgrade fixed my issues. At least for now, anyway. smile

15198  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / [p] Is Bush really better at the war on terror on: October 27, 2004, 05:56:51 PM
I doubt you'll see another post from me ever on politics, but let me put it this way why this election is just screwed up:

Okay, when two new people are running for election (previous president hits his 8 years, steps down, whatever), it should be a simple 'this guy verses this guy' 'battle'. You don't know anything about either person short of their history before trying to run for president.

However, for a reelection, it should be a fight between what the previous president did and the new guy. It should be a 'look at what the president did in his last four years, and if you want him in office for another four', not a 'this guy verses this guy' battle.

Unfortunately, the average public is just so dumb, they don't look at what Bush did the last four years in office. Instead, they just look at the person to person fight. They look at all the political bullshit that both sides toss around.

I for one don't care who takes the office 'throne', but I sure as hell don't want Bush there for another four years. I for one would vote for somebody like Nader or an unknown if it meant that it kept Bush out of office.

Yes, I feel that he screwed up that bad overall in his last four years, and that's that. I don't want to take the chance of seeing him do anything worse.

Discuss, as I won't be back. smile

Combine that with the fact that you have to buy (or rebuy) these mini-DVDs to watch movies on the thing, and I don't exactly see this as a winner. A threat to Nintendo, yes, but not a true winner.

There are 4 main AT's with each AT having 3 classes, each class having 2 subclasses.

To be completely technical:

There are 4 main classes (Fighter, Priest, Mage, Scout), that each have 3 classes that split off from that (which you choose at level 10). From there, you'll advance to one of two final classes at level 20, which is based on if you're a Qeynos or Freeport (good or evil) citizen.

And, yes, the Good/Evil classes will be dramatically different. The same subclass for the Fighter, for example, can promote you to either a Paladin or a Shadow Knight. Each will get their own set of spells/abilities.

So, in short, to have a character for every class, you'd need 24 (4 main x 3 classes x 2 good/evil choice) character slots.

This is why people are complaining about how 4 slots are too few. Add in the fact that the Froglok class is locked until they're 'rescued' after launch, and you'll see the reasons.
