15161  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / An extremely detailed preview of EQ2 on: October 23, 2004, 07:39:30 PM
Quote from: "YellowKing"
It's also a strategic decision - do I take the time to cast Create Food (and burn the mana) to complete the wheel, or do I just nuke the guy? The wheel was designed to have trade-offs, not be a side effect of casting every offensive spell you would have cast anyway.

The HO (Heroic Opportunity) wheel is very...strange. But it's amazingly effective as well.

Let me describe the one that I see:

I'm in a group of three (myself and two friends who happen to be in the Beta as well). We consist of a Fighter (Crusader to be exact), Priest (Shaman), and Mage (Wizard).

When the Fighter pulls (arrow, taunt ability, etc), he opens with a Kick (does damage). That move starts off the HO chain, which gives us 4 different options to spread out the chain.

The Priest continues with the Smite ability (also does damage), which continues the HO chain. It still hasn't 'locked' in yet, so any miscast here will cancel the whole thing. Now there's another (and only one) ability available to continue the chain with.

Then the Mage casts Lightning (also does damage), and that finishes off the start of the HO wheel. Now it's 'locked' in, which means that it becomes a timed event. Once we all cast the spells associated with the chain, the HO will fire off.

I've seen a common HO wheel (Fighter does a damage move, mage casts a damage spell, and the Priest casts regen), which then completes to do a bonus damage of about all three of us hitting the mob with another damage spell (combined), or a more rare one (two buffs and a damage from the mage), which tends to do a bit weaker damage as a result, but also buffs or heals the entire party.

The HO system is complicated, but VERY rewarding for those more difficult encounters.  Odds are though that unless you're with a good team leader (or have a good set group like I have), you won't be pulling it off consistantly.

One thing to keep in mind though - you can still pull off this combo solo. Some classes have it a bit easier than others, but all classes can do solo HOs.

Personally though, I've never seen a HO that requires things like Create Food in order to complete though. Normally they're useful things like buffs or the Taunt ability of the Warrior. Things that you'd use in the course of battle, but not things you'd always use.

I'd say that thread was locked because they wanted to make an official surprise announcement or something.

Based on what I'm reading in the beta forums (open only to beta players), it's just being locked as Sony simply isn't confirming the date. Therefore it's mistruth, therefore it's locked. smile

LE's complaints are all valid, also the game cheats and deliberately breaks the gauge if you use your character to fight. Thus you must either not fight at all if you want the gauge up which isn't too fun or you fight without the gauge, which kinda eliminates the purpose of it in the first place.  So you end up avoiding battle which also sucks because you can't just sit there and watch them fight because the AI will nearly always give chase to your character forcing you to spend every battle running around in circles. Not fun at all.

Now, I always actually fought in battles, and I never had any real problems of the gague breaking short of boss fights. Yes, there were some cheap instances of the enemies getting through my guard, but beyond that, I had little problem (short of the end areas, anyway) getting the bonus gague up and running. 10-15 battles without a break were pretty common for me.

I think its awesome. Great story with some cool twists later on. It starts off a little slow, but towards the end of the first disc things pick up and get really interesting. I have put about 40 or so hours into the game and still have a ways to go. I just wish the team mates AI wasn't so dumb during combat. Otherwise I have no real complaints against it.

Like jersoc, I loved the game. In fact, I reviewed it over here. biggrin

It had a fun combat system (with dumb AI, unfortunately), a great story (and one mother of a twist), 50-60 hours of gameplay (can extend that into 100+ EASILY if you want to do everything), and had a great musical soundtrack.

Devote some time to this game - you'll find it worth your time.
15165  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Zonealarm ate my internet... AND explorer.exe on: October 21, 2004, 01:30:45 PM
Personally, ever since I got my router, I disabled Zonealarm for good. It caused more and more hassles the more things I did with it.

Just keep WinXP updated, don't use IE (to prevent things auto-installing via their 'features), and run Adaware/Spybot every month or so, and most people have absolutely nothing to worry about.
15166  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Anyone playing the Dungeon Lords Beta? on: October 21, 2004, 01:28:21 PM
After taking a quick visit to the official site (as I want to play this too), I've come to the conclusion that nobody is beta testing it right now. Nobody has even said 'yes, I'm playing, but I can't talk about it'.

And the demo (which was supposed to be out in September) still isn't out.

I heard this from various tech people in computer stores. xp is supposed to be much more cpu intensive, resource hog, etc. So you're saying that if you had a choice with a new OS install that is going to be primarily for gaming from HL2 and onward for the next 2 years, install XP?

There are exactly two OS's you should choose between when building a computer system (especially if you want to play any games):

Windows 98 and Windows XP.

And Windoes 98 isn't supported by Microsoft (or pretty much anybody, for that matter) anymore, so the choice is pretty easy.

I don't think we're talking about voiceovers when you engage an NPC in conversation. In nearly every beta post or journal I've read they say it's the random ones that test the nerves. Stuff like 'if I hear "Qeynos is a shining beacon of light!' or 'Come and browse the finest wares in Qeynos!" again I'm throwing my computer out the window.'

Yes, I do have to admit that the locals do chatter a bit as you run by, but it's not as bad as they make it out to be.

But, yes, some NPCs have the amazing ability to be very clearly heard through the most solid of objects.

Why is this a sub-par MGS?  Is that from playing the demo?

Because after MGS2 (which I for the most part enjoyed until the absolute stinker of a last hour or so), I don't have much hope for the sequel.

That and the general gameplay is just...overdone, in my opinion.

And there's too damn many other games coming out that are guarenteed AAA titles during that month. Maybe come next year I'll pick it up.

Sure puts anything George Lucas does to shame.

George Lucas could only hope in his wildest dreams to make anything even remotely close to the pure brillance of this show.

Notice the little thing near the end when Crichton asks Aeryn if its all worth it, and what peace is worth. Right when Crichton walks off to his Wormhole of Mass Destruction, you can see a moment's realization on Aeryn's face. She knows what will happen to Crichton when he uses his machine.

It's the little things like that that just make this show seem so real, so amazing.

Damn you Sci-Fi.

Edit: As far as Dargo goes...well, let's put it this way - Superhero/villian rule number one: If you don't actually see the person die onscreen, then one can assume that they truly aren't dead. smile

Hm... I know the whole collection-of-islands thing matches with EQ2's storyline, but I dunno, it sounds a little... modular.  Pre-PoP Everquest was sort of fun because when it came to travel, you got first-hand experience on how big the world actually was.

You know, if you really want to travel from zone to zone, each zone does have a normal 'exit' in them for EQ2. If you want to travel the world, you can. smile

I'm still debating though which method of travel is better though. I also wasn't in EQ when PoP came out, so I was used to running (as a Bard) all over the place.

I have a real pet peeve with limited character customization (especially in an MMOG with tons of other players!) and was just wondering if anybody could elaborate on how few EQ2 has?

EQ2 has a ton of facial edits and such. In short, each part of the face (eye tilt, cheek length, nose tilt, eye color, etc) has a slider to scale up and down on. While some designs look utterly freaky, most turn out to make a very realistic looking face in the end.

In addition, you have about 8-10 (depending on race) hairstyle/head accessories to choose from (including none at all).

Because of the sliders and the adjustments, odds are that you'll never encounter anybody who has the exact same face as you do.

I hear it's like SWG, but don't quote me on that as I never played that dredge of a game short of some Beta time (where me, and everybody else, said that it wasn't ready for launch).

To my knowledge, Creative updated their drivers ONCE for the Live line of cards - and that was when WinXP itself came out.

It's reasons like that that made me rip out my card in disgust and use my onboard sound from there on out.

Turtle Beach made a nice line of cards. If it's still good is another matter. I'm guessing yes though, personally.

Yes, it was...off, for some reason. Who knows - maybe they couldn't get the same voice actor back for some reason or another.

While the show was outstanding (as pretty much always), one thing that always bugged me was the characters' ability to live in outer space in the sub-zero vaccuum that it is. I realize that there's some basis of fact buried in there somewhere, but it has always irked me.

And Earth is once again somehow involved in the grand scheme of things in this part of the galaxy (the whole Peacekeeper thing). Interesting...

So, how is this story going to turn out? I can't wait until tonight.

All I want to know is this - where can I buy the DVD of this? smile

Have you tried the omega drivers for your card?  They're not supported, but they're basically pieced/hacked together by some very experienced hardware gurus out of the best of each driver release.  Not sure where to find them these days.

That's a simple answer:

Just pulled them yesterday, to tell you the truth. Wanted to exploit my X800 XT to its fullest, so off to overclocking land I go.

In all honesty though, while you really should uninstall your older drivers before installing the new ones, that's something I never do. Yes, it's technically wrong, but I've never had any issues yet.

The only thing I can suggest is to try to download older drivers. I'm just not sure where to get them from.

If I had to guess I'd say it revolves around "money issues", and the NFL and their owners keeping more of it in their pockets and not sharing it with another provider of game coverage.

15191  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: The Community "Upgrade or not to upgrade" PC t on: October 17, 2004, 07:27:01 PM
Well, I'm one of those who believes in pretty much being at the top of the line (more or less), so here's the results if you spend lots of cash for a PC (ah, the joys of being single):

Althon AMD XP 3000+
ASUS...something. Don't crack the case often enough to check.
2x Crucial 512MB PC2700 DDR RAM
ATI X800XT (just upgraded from a 9700 Pro)
Onboard sound (Creative Labs can *bleep* off)
120GB WD and 80GB Maxtor HDs
Lite-on DVD Drive
Plextor DVD-R/CD-RW 4/2.4/8/32/16/48 (something like that)
WinXP

To answer your question: Another 512MB will make a world of difference, as WinXP (and other programs) just fly with that much in. That 9800 Pro is still going strong, although the processor is starting to lag.

Also, definitely pick up at least a 80GB drive and reinstall WinXP on that. Starting from scratch will give you a huge speed boost (as Knightshade Dragon keeps reminding me), especially if you've used WinXP for a long time.

Well, im heading off to europe on wensday, and I wanted to have a GBA SP for the trip, sinc I will be spending lots of time on trains. What is the cost difference in europe as compared to the US? Will it still work with the US games? Im wondering about these questions because I might be purchasing it when I get to europe.

The other option was getting it before I leave. I have a 15 hour plane flight before I go, so I wouldnt mind it for that either. But, although Im not sure this fits here, what would my options be for power when I get to europe? How would I be able to recharge it? Is there somewhere I can get a european charger that works the same once I get there? Or an adaptor of some sort?

Well, Nintendo has always never had any lockout on their portable consoles, so a GBA SP (or GB, GBC, or GBA) are fully compatible with all games across the world without any modification. So, in short, if you purchase your console in the US, it'll work on all European games (and vice versa).

As far as power goes... The GBA SP comes with a recharger device for the console. All you'll need to do is find some way to convert the standard US plug into one that'll fit into your standard European jack. Check around your local hardware store or visit a gift shop at any International Terminal for what you'll need.

As far as the games go... Well, I don't play my SP enough to warrant answering that question. Anyone else? smile

Well I made my desision, and ill be playing EQ2. Haveing played WoW since alpha (no where near as much as eight has) there are things in WoW that really bother me. Now EQ2 might blow to but Never played it so I really dont know slywink

So, here's my question - why don't you like WoW?

Personally (as I've played both, although I stopped playing WoW as of late thanks to me getting into the EQ2 beta), both are really good games, and I see both succeeding.

But, somehow, EQ2 is drawing me in more.

Most of the problems of EQLive have been fixed. You no longer need the 'holy trinity' just to get anywhere in the game, crafting is actually useful (and is almost fun now), the graphics will look fantastic a year down the line (thanks to no current generation card being able to run the game at max detail and remain playable), and I've yet to run into any giant timesinks of the game.

Yes, their servers need a bit of tweaking (the Commonlands and Antonica, absolutely giant 'zones' that are at least (if not more) as big as the Karanas were in the original are horribly lagged at times, but they also easily support 200-300 people in the zone and still provide more than enough hunting spots for everybody.

The only true issues that I can see is that you'll really need a good (X800 or 6800 level) graphic card and 1gig of RAM just to play the game as the developers designed it - pretty. The character models are fantastic (although they need more diversity of facial hair/skin tones/hair badly), the reflections are amazing, and florna/fauna dot the landscape all over.

Any questions/concerns about EQ2? Ask away.

Personally, I never had any issues getting this to work. However...

Are both PC's running the same OS (WinXP prefered)? If they're WinXP, then all you need to do is this:

On the folders/drives you want to share, open up Explorer, Right Click the folder, and select Properties. From there, click on the Sharing tab, then click on both the 'Share this folder on the network' and 'Allow network users to change my files'.

In theory (at least for me), it worked great.

In addition, if you select this on a drive, it makes the entire drive available. WinXP will pause for a bit if you select this big of a 'folder' to make share enabled, but it'll come out of it and work fine afterwards.

Well the CD is in the drive (CD-2), but it fails to launch. I took a look at the forums at the official site and find that some CD writers may be incompatible. So I yank a 52x drive out of another comp and install that. Still no luck. I did all the updates I could on both RS and AS. Anyone have any other ideas?

Actually, for reasons unknown, Athena Sword needs the ORIGNAL Rainbow Six 3 CD in the drive to run. The one needed to run the original RS3 itself.

I found that out too when I bought the combo package with RS3 with AS in it.

Why did they do it this way? Good question.
